In this investigation, the effects of different coal chemical properties were studied to estimate the coal Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) values index. An artificial neural network (ANN) method for 300 data-sets was used for evaluating the HGI values. Ten input parameters were used, and the outputs of the models were compared in order to select the best model for this study. A threelayer ANN was found to be optimum with architecture of five neurons in each of the first and second hidden layers, and one neuron in the output layer. The correlation coefficients (R2) for the training and test data were 0.962 and 0.82 respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that volatile material, carbon, hydrogen, Btu, nitrogen, and fixed carbon (all on a dry basis) have the greatest effect on HGI, and moisture, oxygen (dry), ash (dry), and total sulphur (dry) the least effect. A two-dimensional numerical scheme for the simulation of the plastic stress-strain properties of rock, and the various components of rock reinforcement and shotcrete, was used to rigorously determine the characteristics of tunnel support under squeezing conditions. D-shaped tunnels varying in size from 2,8 to 6,5 m in height and width were considered. The four main mining stages in the BAS block cave on Premier Mine were simulated as alternative sets of field stresses. The rock reinforcement comprised 1,8 m long fully grouted rockbolts and 6,0 m long fully grouted cable anchors at various spacings, and of various tensile and bond strengths. Various thicknesses of shotcrete and footwall support configurations were also considered. It was found that shotcrete and rock reinforcement, owing to inherent differences in stiffness, do not function in unison. As monolithic application, shotcrete has an overriding avidity for the imposed loading and destructs itself unless of extraordinary thickness. Under squeezing conditions, it accordingly supports the excavation surface while the rock reinforcement contains on-going convergence. The loads in the various support components can be determined only by simulation of the shotcrete as a stress-relieved medium to represent its broken condition in the field. The loads in the rock reinforcement vary around a tunnel and are the largest in the sidewalls. The loads increase with an increase in tunnel dimensions, the increase in load in the sidewall due to an increase in height being larger than that in the hanging- and footwalls due to an increase in width. Depending on the strength of the rock, the loads in the rock reinforcement become prohibitively large beyond a certain size of tunnel. The reinforcement of footwall rock can be omitted without adversely affecting that in other walls, provided the tensile and bond strengths of the reinforcement are not limited. The resulting footwall heave may, however, result in undermining of the reinforcement in the adjoining walls. A relative depth of anchor of 1,37 provides adequate bond strength in the larger sizes of tunnel, whereas, in smaller tunnels, anchor length is determined by the allowable convergence. The lack of fun column grouting adversely affects the efficiency of rock reinforcement to a major extent. The loads in rock reinforcement are very sensitive to the strength of the rock. Owing to a lack in refinement and calculational rigour, empirical classification systems are an inappropriate means for the design of tunnel support in squeezing conditions and, as a result, grossly unclear-estimate the support requirements.

The KX36 kimberlite was discovered using a high-resolution gradient aeromagnetic survey, with follow-up detailed ground geophysics and deflation soil sampling used to assess and prioritize the geophysical anomalies identified from the initial aeromagnetic survey. Prospect drilling intersected kimberlite in the first hole drilled on the KX36 anomaly. Preliminary evaluation has shown that KX36 is diamondiferous, and a more detailed evaluation and sampling programme is currently underway. The area around KX36 has been prospected by numerous companies over the last few decades, with sporadic kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) recoveries in regional deflation sampling indicating the possible presence of kimberlites, but without sufficient resolution to ?home in? on specific targets. Previous (lower resolution) aeromagnetic surveys and soil sampling campaigns also did not define anomalies with sufficient detail to guide prospect drilling effectively. The discovery of KX36 highlights the prospectivity of areas of Botswana under deep Kalahari cover that have been explored previously. The mining industry in South Africa faces real challenges with regard to the reduction of safety-related incidents. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the need for alternative interventions in addition to other safety improvement strategies already employed on mines. It furthermore supports an existing paradigm: incident investigations. An investigation into fatalities in the South African mining industry shows that although great progress has been achieved through the reduction in fatalities in all sectors of the industry over the last few years, more can and should be done to achieve status of ?zero harm?. Fatalities and lost time injuries on mines result not only in large financial losses, but also in disruptions of mining operations in general through Section 54 stoppages to resolve the situation. The approach of the paper is therefore not to try and prove whether there is high fatality rate and/or lost time injuries, but in what way incident reconstruction simulations (IRS) can have an impact in the future prevention of such incidents. The challenge therefore lies in the utilization of pro-active systems that would show employees the possible outcomes of being exposed to certain hazards. In real life, these incidents cannot be re-enacted and in most cases we can only learn through the previous mistakes of others. A virtual reality (VR) education and training system will enable employees to be ?exposed? to different hazards in a safe environment, and simulation, in a ?forgiving? environment, of the possible consequences of unsafe acts. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), unsafe acts and unsafe conditions are indirect causes of safety-related incidents, but there are also direct causes; for example, unplanned release of energy and/or hazardous material, and basic causes, for example, management safety policies, personal factors, and environmental factors. The administrative workload associated with any incident investigation places a large burden on the investigation team, and in most cases other employees are informed through vague administrative processes what the ?real cause? for the incident/accident was. New preventative strategies are often put in place without showing the employees what the real causes of the incident/accident were. This can be mitigated through the use of interactive VR simulations/animations of the hazards that they are exposed to and how to deal with them. If VR interventions are not used as proposed by this paper, the real causes and consequences of almost all fatalities and lost time injuries may never be fully understood. This paper also emphasizes what potential impact IRS could have on the prevention of future mine incidents as part and parcel of a pro-active risk prevention strategy. The intention is therefore not to replace any other risk prevention strategies, but to visually enhance the reality of the incident. It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica,-the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclone are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.

In this paper the process of sampling and assaying as it relates in particular to the platinum group elements (PGEs) is presented. A discussion of the geology of PGE deposits is included to provide an understanding of the mineralization that is considered necessary prior to sampling, as this has a direct bearing on the mineral resource estimate and also the selection of an appropriate mining cut. The discussion includes the selection of the sampling technique (drilling or face sampling), the size of the sample relating to the requirements of the laboratory, the potential mining cut, as well as a reference to sampling theory. The selection of an assay technique that is appropriate and will yield the optimal result based on sample turnaround, precision, accuracy, and cost is then considered. Examples are drawn from work undertaken on the Bushveld Complex (Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite Layer, Platreef) and Great Dyke (Main Sulphide Zone). The importance of the chemical and physical properties of lime has been overlooked for years although the quality of lime plays an important role in the production of steel. With the introduction of the oxygen injection process these properties have been re-evaluated. The CaO, MgO, S, and P2O5 contents of lime are important, but so are the physical properties such as granulation, reactivity with respect to slag formation, and the degree of burning. Soft burnt lime enhances de-phosphorisation and de-sulphurisation, and facilitates the smelting process in general, mainly due to its large specific surface. Special lime, prepared as briquettes from quicklime and fluxes or as pellets from limestone and various fluxes with or without binding agents, clearly accelerates lime dissolution during the slag formation process, lowers the melting point, and enhances de-phosphorisation, de-sulphurisatlon, and de-carburisation even more than soft burnt lime. The introduction of special limes in the oxygen injection process for steel production has opened up new fields for commercial exploitation of slags as well as improved operational techniques.

Utilisation of lower-grade (<60 per cent Fe) resources, not utilised in the current products, is crucial to ensure optimal resource utilisation and maintaining/improving future profit margins by reclassifying low-grade material to ore. The purpose of the Sishen Expansion Project (?SEP?) is therefore to investigate the technical and financial viability of producing up to an additional 10 Mtpa of new products at Sishen from material currently classified as low-grade materials. Jigging technology has progressed to a point where Sishen?s 50 to 60 per cent Fe run of mine (?ROM?) material, once considered as waste, can be beneficiated to produce a saleable 64 per cent Fe product. This has been confirmed through appropriate beneficiation testwork. Consequently, Sishen can now produce saleable product from material not currently included in the resource definition, increasing the resource base of the mine significantly and ensuring higher resource utilisation. Mine Planning utilised the geological models to produce detail planning schedules, reflecting the current and SEP plants separately, optimised to comply with product specifications of both the current and SEP plants and to confirm the viability of the low-grade resources identified as SEP feed material. The SEP products specifications have been derived by optimally matching iron ore market requirements with the revised resource base. A 64.0 per cent Fe lump product and a 63.5 per cent Fe fine product are the optimal SEP products. The SEP plant will be able to produce 10Mtpa at an average yield of 60 per cent and a lump to fine ratio of 62 to 38. The plant consists of five major sections namely crushing, material preparation, beneficiation, final product handling and quality control services. Maximum integration with the current Sishen plant was considered. Kumba currently has an agreement with Transnet to rail up to 23.5 Mtpa through the Sishen Saldanha Iron Ore Export Channel (?IOEC?). Transnet and Sishen Iron Ore Company have signed a Definitive Agreement that deals with the expansion of IOEC?s capacity, which increases Kumba?s entitlement from 23.5Mtpa to 35.0Mtpa. The detailed enviro-legal impact assessments for the SEP indicated that the project has low enviro-legal risk as a result of it being a brownfields project incorporated into the current Sishen operations.

"Understanding the influence of feed material mineral assemblage on spiral separation is paramount for the successful and consistent operation of a spiral plant. Plant stability is required to maintain high recovery of valuable heavy minerals (VHM). Standard material analysis methods used in the heavy mineral industry to evaluate spiral separation behaviour are unable to quantify performance differences in the case of large variations in feed assemblage. This study illustrates a systematic approach to evaluate spiral separation performance. This technique was applied on a four-stage spiral plant. The performance information was used in a circuit simulation to clearly illustrate the importance of correct setting of the spiral splitter position and resulting spiral mass loading to ensure optimal circuit stability and maximum VHM recovery.IntroductionHeavy mineral sands deposits generally consist of naturally fine-grained, free-flowing sand due to the way in which the deposit was formed. The size of the heavy minerals market is roughly 8 Mt/a of zircon and titanium combined (Iluka, 2013). If an average combined feed grade of 5% zircon and titanium and an average combined overall product recovery of 80% are assumed, the resulting run-of-mine feed tons that would require primary spiral beneficiation is 200 Mt/a. The number of spirals required for the processing of this material, assuming 6500 operating hours per annum, an average of 2 t/h per start, and the same number of rougher spirals as other duty spirals, is over 30 000 spirals for the heavy mineral sands business alone. These numbers clearly illustrate the importance of the spiral in the heavy mineral industry.The aim of a spiral plant in the primary processing value chain of a heavy mineral process is to reject non-valuable quartz (a light mineral) from various valuable heavy minerals (VHM). The product from the spiral plant is a heavy mineral concentrate that has a reasonable grade (more than 90% heavy minerals) at a reasonable heavy mineral recovery (greater than 90%). This benchmark is fairly easy to achieve if all the mineral particles are well liberated (as in the case free-flowing sand), the feed is properly deslimed (-45 µm fraction removed to less than 5% of the solids mass), and the spirals are fed within design solids concentration (water to solids ratio) and design spiral load (dry tons per hour per start)."

In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

"The synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthyl hydroxamic acid (H2O5) as a collector for bastnaesite is described. The flotation performance of H2O5 with respect to bastnaesite was investigated by flotation tests, measurements of the surface adsorption capacity, and polarizing microscopy. The results indicated that H2O5 exhibits superior collecting performance compared with direct flotation recovery of bastnaesite, with recoveries above 90% at pH 8–9. The adsorption mechanism of H2O5 on bastnaesite was studied by solution chemistry analysis and ?-potential tests. The results showed that the adsorption of H2O5 is associated with the types and concentrations of hydrolysis products of rare earth cations on the bastnaesite surface. At pH 8–9, the hydrolysis-dominant components RE(OH)2+ and RE(OH)2 + of the rare earth cations were adsorbed onto the bastnaesite surfaces, which were considered to be the major positive active points and were beneficial to chemical adsorption of the reagents. The pH range of 7–10 was optimum for bastnaesite floatability, and the adsorption of H205 on bastnaesite was by means of chemical adsorption through formation of a five-membered ring chelate. IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) have long been known as ‘industrial gold’ and are widely used in the petroleum, chemical, ceramic, metallurgical, and permanent magnet material industries because of their special physicochemical properties (Chen, 2011; Krishnamurthy and Guptac, 2002; Esquivel, Bohe, and Pasquevich, 2002; Abrahami, Xiao, and Yang, 2015). Demand for REEs is growing in response to continuous advances in science and technology. Currently, most REEs are extracted from bastnaesite ((Ce,La)CO3F) (Chelgani et al., 2015; Yosry, 1990), which is recovered from rare earth ores by flotation. Typically, hydroxamic acids are used as bastnaesite collectors (Xu, 2015; Ren, 1997; Mousumi and Venugopal, 2016). Research into the mechanism of interaction between hydroxamic acids and bastnaesite is important for improving the recoveries of bastnaesite. However, there have been few studies that examine this mechanism."

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

In recent years, rapid depletion of the higher grade reserves, allied to decreases in paylimits, has led to the exploitation of secondary, erratically mineralized placer horizons on various marginal and low grade gold mines. On Blyvooruitzicht Mine, the rich Carbon Leader Reef has limited reserves, necessitating exploration of the lower grade Middelvlei Reef. This placer has always presented evaluation and exploration problems, to such an extent that it was, at one stage, considered uneconomic. Despite an extensive underground drilling programme no ore reserve targets of reasonable size were apparent. However, when a certain degree of parallelism between sedimentological trends in the Middelvlei Reef and the underlying Carbon Leader was recognized, a meaningful exploration model could be developed. Firstly, all historical sampling records for the Carbon Leader were entered into a computerized system; the database comprised in excess of 340 000 data points. Variables captured consisted of gold value, uranium value, con- glomerate thickness and total reef thickness. The raw data were then averaged into blocks, and plots of different variables were computer-generated for further analysis. This enabled the Carbon Leader to be modelled sedimentologically and, thereby, exploration targets for the Middelvlei Reef were generated, based on the Carbon Leader facies trends. Geostatistical analysis of sampling data in exposed areas of the Middelvlei Reef underground has confirmed the sedimentological breakdown of the placer into distinct facies areas. A facies model relating value distribution patterns to depositional trends, both for the Carbon Leader and the Middelvlei Reef, has thus been incorporated into a mine planning strategy.

The Talvivaara deposits are located in Eastern Finland, within the Kainuu Schist Belt. These polymetallic sulphide deposits are of relatively low grade, but bioheapleaching enables economically profitable nickel extraction from the ore. Zinc, cobalt, and copper are also produced. Talvivaara?s production process begins with large-scale open-pit mining and four crushing stages, followed by stacking of the ore in bioleaching heaps. The ore is first leached for 13?14 months on the primary leach pad, after which the leached ore is reclaimed, conveyed, and re-stacked on the secondary heap pad. After secondary leaching, the barren ore will remain on the secondary heaps permanently. In the metals recovery process, the metals are precipitated from the pregnant leaching solution. Construction of the process was begun in spring of 2007 and first metal sulphides were produced at the plant in October 2008. The development of the bioheapleaching process was begun in a 17 000t on-site pilot heap operated during 2005?2008 and has continued in the industrial heap. At industrial scale, the development measures have focused on improving the permeability and aeration of the heap. Challenges with crushing and aerations systems at the beginning of industrial-scale leaching delayed the increase in metal recovery, but after the first two operational years the leaching results have improved significantly and the process is performing as targeted.

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid.

The purpose of this article is to show how a representative overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) measurement can be calculated for an underground coal mining bord and pillar batch process. The calculation method, the typical losses (which include planned and unplanned availability losses, coal quality losses, and process rate losses) and the underlying logic are presented and discussed. It is argued that the current traditional underground bord and pillar mining process can currently provide a maximum theoretical OEE of only 49 per cent, while a realistic benchmark target should be in the order of 37 per cent, which relates to an average of 2400 t per shift or 1.2 Mt/a. In addition, it is argued that the current bord and pillar process is the current bottleneck to further improvement past the 2400 t per shift benchmark, and that fundamental process changes will be required to eliminate this bottleneck.
