The continuing high-level performance of the domestic mineral and mineral fuels industries during 1966 was sustained by the longest business upturn in the Nation's history. Spurred by consumer demand at home and the defense production requirements of the Viet-Nam war, the rising trend of economic activity during the year was reflected in the upward movements of the major economic indicators. At yearend the gross national product (GNP), representing the value of all goods and services produced, stood at $740 billion, $58 billion greater than in 1965. Corrected for price changes, the real value of GNP in terms of 1958 dollars was $648 billion and represented an annual increase in economic activity of 5.4 percent. Some 74 million persons were employed during the year out of a total population of 196.8 million, while unemployment fell below 4 percent. The Federal Reserve Index of Industrial Production averaged 156 for 1966, up 13 points from the previous year. However a jarring note in the 1966 expansion, and one which affected the mineral industries in particular, was the increasing pressure on prices and the threat of inflation. From 1961-65 economic growth was facilitated by relatively stable wages and prices and only mild inflation. During the period average wholesale prices hardly moved while average consumer prices rose only about I percent per year. But this long run of relative price stability ended during 1966 when consumer prices rose 2.9 percent and wholesale prices were up 3.2 percent from the previous year.

"In presenting the results of this survey on consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron for the year 1935 the Bureau of Mines, responding to requests from industry, seeks to fill a major gap that has long existed in the field of metalliferous raw-material statistics. This type of information is designed to meet the needs of: (1) Consumers of ferrous scrap. including operators of blast furnaces, steel mills, ferrous foundries, and rolling mills; (2) marketers of scrap iron and steel, including large brokers who sell, and dealers who collect, prepare, and sell the material; (3) large scrap producers; (4) producers of iron ore, with which scrap competes indirectly; and (5) other individuals and agencies interested in more general economic analysis, since the scrap market has repeatedly been cited as one of the most sensitive of all industrial barometers, If the survey prover as useful as now seems probable, it will be continued annually with possibly an enlarged scope of treatment.The Bureau appreciates that its first efforts in this field may not meet all expectations: but it hopes to develop gradually, through suggestions, advice, and criticism from the industrial groups most interested, a type of analysis that will accord closely with technical processes and best meet the needs of all groups vitally interested in supplies and use of ferrous scrap. Constructive criticism and suggestions from industry regarding improvements to be desired in the conduct of future surveys on this subject will therefore be warmly received by the Bureau."

This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the appropriate quantities of rare-earth methals (REM) in the form of silicides to add to an alloy steel for the purpose of increasing toughness and ductility. The work was conducted in a vacuum induction furnace with the rare-earth additions required to deoxidize and desulfurize a simulated basic oxygen furnace (BOF) vacuum-degassed steel initially containing 0.013 to 0.016 percent sulfur. The product proved to be as good or better than the best basic electric furnace steel of the same composition made by the steel industry. Twenty-three experimental heats of 5 Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel were made, cast into 50-1b ingots, and hot-worked in a press and a rolling mill to ½ inch plates which were then heat-treated to 130/150 ksi4 yield strength. Impact and tension tests showed that the addition of 0.025 to 0.100 percent, or ½ to 2 lb per ton, respectively, of rare-earth metals when compounded with silicon were appropriate for increasing toughness and ductility. These quantities resulted in retained cerium contents between 0.014 to 0.025 percent, and increased the Charpy V-notch energy absorption and the percent reduction of area significantly as compared with base heats at the same sulfur content levels. All the test heats, including those with additions of REH of as much as 4 lb/ton, had greater Charpy V-notch energy absorption values than the base composition could have developed at the starting sulfur range of 0.013-0.016 wt pct.

The data presented in this report are the results, to date, of an ongoing Pittsburgh Research Center Disaster5Prevention research program on the explosion hazards associated with blasting operations in noncoal mines. Laboratory and experimental mine tests have shown that oil shale and sulfide ore dusts can be ignited given the proper predispersed dust concentrations, particle size, and kerogen or sulfur content. Methane (CH) gas may also4be present in deep oil shale formations and can pose a significant added hazard to underground blasting operations. The most common explosive used for blasting in oil shale had been ANFO, a combination of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil; blasting in sulfide ore had used ANFO and/or dynamites. Tests conducted at the cannon gallery at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fair chance, Fayette County, PA, provided a means of evaluating the relative incendivity characteristics of new and existing explosive products. Three explosives—a pumpable emulsion-ANFO blend, a packaged water gel, and an emulsion blasting agent—exhibited low-incendive qualities compared with other more highly incendive products such as ANFO and some dynamites. Based on the data collected during numerous full-scale blasts in oil shale and sulfide ore mines, the low-incendive products significantly reduced or eliminated the ignition hazards while at the same time providing effective fragmentation of the rock. Based on the positive results from the gallery and field testing, low-incendive explosives, coupled with good blasting procedures, show promise in reducing dust and/or gas ignitions associated with blasting operations in oil shale and sulfide ore mining applications.

The removal of overburden often exposes pyritic materials (iron disulfide). As shown in equations 1 and 2, the oxidation of this material results in the production of ferrous iron and sulfuric acid. The reaction then proceeds to form ferric hydroxide and more acid, as shown in equations 2 and 4. [ ] Consequently a low pH water is produced (pH 2-4.5). At these pH levels, the heavy metals such as iron, manganese, copper, and zinc are more soluble and enter into the solution to further pollute the water. Water of this type supports only limited water flora, such as acid-tolerant molds and algae; it will not support fish life, destroys and corrodes metal piers, culverts, barges, etc., increases the cost of water treatment for power plants and municipal water supplies, and leaves the water unacceptable for recreational uses. The amount, and rate of acid formation, and the quality of water discharged are a function of the amount and type of pyrite in the overburden and coal, time of exposure, characteristics of the overburden, and amount of available water(l). Crystalline forms of pyritic material are less subject to weathering and oxidation than amorphic forms. Since oxidation by oxygen is the primary reaction during early acid formation, the less time pyritic material is exposed to air, the less acid is formed. Thus, a positive preventative method is to cover pyritic materials as soon as possible with earth, which serves as an oxygen barrier. In terms of mining, this step is accomplished by current reclamation techniques and small open pits.

That a close analogy exists between the flow of air in mines and the flow of current in electrical networks- has been known for a long time. The laws that have been used to solve series and parallel electrical circuits have been used to solve for the equivalent resistance in mine ventilation problems. Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws have also been adopted in solving mine ventilation network problems. It will be best to define a few terms here regarding networks, and with reference to Figure 1, these definitions can be elucidated. Figure 1 can be represented by the network in Figure 2 without losing any essential details. 1. A junction is a point where two or more airways meet. 2. The segment of a roadway connecting any two junctions is known as a branch. 3. A mesh is a closed path through the network. In the above network, B, C, D and F are the junctions, CF and CD are two of the branches and CFDC is a mesh. Kirchhoff's current law states that the sum of currents entering a junction. Applying this law to the junctions in the ventilation network, one obtains for junctions C and F, the following relationships: JUNCTION C: Q1 = Q4 + Q3 (1) JUNCTION F: Q2 + Q3 = Q5 (2) Similar relationships can be drawn for other junctions. Two types of flammability limits have been measured for various dusts in the Fike 1-m3 (1000-L) chamber and in the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) 20-L chamber. The first limit is the minimum explosible concentration (MEC), which was measured at several ignition energies. In addition to the three dusts studied previously (bituminous coal, anthracite coal, and gilsonite), this work continues the effort by adding three additional dusts: RoRo93, lycopodium, and iron powder. These materials were chosen to extend the testing to non-coal materials as well as to a metallic dust. The new MEC data corroborate the previous observations that very strong ignitors can overdrive the ignition in the smaller 20-L chamber. Recommendations are given in regard to appropriate ignition energies to be used in the two chambers. The study also considered the other limiting component, oxygen. Limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) testing was performed in the same 20-L and 1-m3 vessels for gilsonite, bituminous coal, RoRo93, and aluminum dusts. The objective was to establish the protocol for testing at different volumes. A limited investigation was made into overdriving in the 20-L vessel. The LOC results tended to show slightly lower results for the smaller test volume. The results indicated that overdriving could occur and that ignition energies of 2.5 kJ in the 20-L vessel would yield comparable results to those in the 1- m3 vessel using 10.0 kJ. The studies also illustrate the importance of dust concentration on LOC determinations.

"Diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and as found in five underground coal mines- 3 utiliting diesel-powered hallage equipment and two electric-powered equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations. The first technique, using a microbrifke uniform deposit impactor CMOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of .the aerosol is predom1nately submicrometer and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance CCMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results. ,The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral ·dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 um. For the diesel equipped mines, this analysts yielded an average value for the fraction of the fine aerosol attributable to mineral dust of 1 pct. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. A theoretical technique has been developed and verified experimentally for determining the aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles. The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a very important property in determining where that particle deposits in the respiratory tract. Many instruments, such as impactors and cyclones, will determine the aerodynamic size distributions of aerosol particles but few analyze the particles individually. The theoretical approach of our technique is to solve, by use of high speed computers, the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the flow field around an irregular shaped particle of any contour. The computer program will then determine the drag on the particle, and thus the aerodynamic diameter of the particle can be calculated. The experimental approach has been to pass the particles through a centrifuge and collect the particles upon a collection foil. The position of a particle on the foil is an indication of its aerodynamic diameter. These particles were then shadowed in two orthogonal directions and inspected under an SEM. The top view of the particle in the SEM plus the views of the two orthogonal shadows allows one to determine the three dimensional shape of the particle. Studies have been performed on silica, coal and talc particles with aerodynamic diameters in the 1 to 4 um size range. The three dimensional shape, as is determined from SEM analysis was used in the theoretical computer program and the results compared. It was found that in most 'cases the agreement between the experimentally and theoretically determined aerodynamic diameters was within 5%.

Coal, in the process of mining, transportation, and handling and on exposure to the weather, is subject to more or less disintegration. This disintegrated coal is usually called "slack" and amounts often to a considerable percentage of the lump coal produced in the mines. If this slack coal is wasted the loss so occasioned ranges from 5 to 50 per cent, or even more, of the total coal mined. It is therefore clear that the utilization of this waste slack coal becomes a serious economic consideration. When the coal is suitable for the production of coke, the utilization of the slack presents no difficulty, as it is in demand for that purpose. If the coal does not produce good coke, but cakes rather readily, the slack can be used for boiler purposes, as it fuses together more or less quickly, and burns on the furnace grate without great loss. Coal that cakes less readily can be burned on grates of special construc- tion. When so used it is more troublesome to handle, and the waste is greater than when lump coal is used. Consequently the price of much of the slack coal for fuel purposes ranges considerably lower than that of the lump coal from the same mine. The great expansion of production of aluminum for war purposes has aroused some concern regarding the available supply of carbon suitable for making carbon electrodes required in the electrolytic aluminum process. Approximately three-quarters of a pound of carbon electrode is consumed for each pound of aluminum produced. 5 Because of its small amount of impurities and its suitable physical characteristics, calcined petroleum coke is the standard material used by the aluminum industry for making electrodes As it may be necessary to use some substitute materials, the possibility of using coke made from coal has been considered. Besides this possible use, information concerning the source of low-ash coals is of general interest. Specifications of the aluminum industry for calcined petroleum coke suitable for the manufacture of electrodes are very stringent in regard to allowable impurities. In one such specification the maximum allowable ash is 1.0 percent; the maximum allowable content of iron (as Fe) is 0.06 percent and that of silicon (as Si) is 0.08 percent; the maximum for cal- cium (as Ca) and for sodium (as Na) is 0.12 percent for each, but the two combined may not exceed 0.12 percent; maximum allowable sulfur is 2.0 per- cent. The presence of barium, nickel, chromium, manganese, cobalt, or vanadium is objectionable, and only extremely small amounts are allowed. In regard to physical properties, the coke is required to be so thoroughly calcined that it has a real density of at least 2.02.

A study was made during 1959-60 of reported nelsonite occurrences in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va. The investigation was limited to core drill- ing on one deposit and beneficiation studies on three deposits. Three diamond-drill holes totaling 562 feet were drilled on the E. M. Hughes property to determine subsurface continuity. Although outcrops as much as 30 feet wide were present on this property, the only nelsonite intersected in the holes ranged from 4 to 18 inches thick. The ilmenite content of the core ranged from 50 to 75 percent. These nelsonite deposits are of secondary importance as a source of titanium, being small, rarely exceeding 1,500 feet in length and 30 feet in width, but they are high grade. Due to the proximity of some of the bodies it might be possible to mine several of them as one operation feeding one mill. Electromagnetic separation on composited samples recovered 83.0 percent of the Tio as an ilmenite concentrate in 68.5 percent of the weight. Two flotation procedures were developed. The first method, using oleic acid as a collector and fluo silicic acid as an apatite depressant on deslimed feed, produced an overall recovery of 59.3 percent in batch tests. The second procedure eliminated desliming. Laurylamine hydrochloride removed silicates in an acid pulp followed by an alkaline apatite flotation with oleic acid as the collector and dextrine as the ilmenite depressant. The ilmenite-rich tailing represented a 66.2-percent recovery of Tio in the batch tests.

Crosson and Peters treat the errors that result in miner location due to errors in the overburden earth model used for computing location. A parallel effort by J. Powell of PMSRC is discussed here, where the location method used is that of the Westinghouse location program - "Miner". This location program was tested by Powell by using arrival times generated from the overburden earth model of Table l* rounded to the nearest millisecond. Location computations were then made using 3 geophones at a time. The average location is tabulated for all geophone triplets except when 3 geophones are in line. Geophone arrays were as shown in Tables 2 and 3. The manner in which the test was done is illustrated in Figure 1. I. SUMMARY OF RESULTS The arrival time differences, based on the Table 1 earth model, together with geophone locations based on the array geometries of Tables 2 and 3, were entered into the computer, together with a stated depth of 700 feet and an estimated overburden seismic velocity of 10,000 feet per second. These parameter values were processed by the location program - "Miner". Figure 2 illustrates the interpretation of the plots and data. The tabular data and plots of Table 4 and Figures 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the location error results obtained. These plots indicate that for sources within the array, the errors are considerably less than the measured errors obtained during field tests of the present location system. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are noted in Part Eight (Earth Models).

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

Landmines are a great threat to military vehicles and their occupants. Mine blasts can completely destroy vehicles and kill all the occupants or disable the vehicle and leave the occupants severely injured. Injuries sustained during a landmine blast come from fragmentation that enters the vehicle through a hull breach, hot gasses expanding through the vehicle, or shock created from the extreme pressure of the blast (Lafrance, L.P. 1998). Mitigating the high acceleration experienced by the occupants during survivable mine blasts is the focus of the research being addressed in this paper. Method The objective of the project reported in this paper was to prove the feasibility that pneumatic seat technologies that employ light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seats and seat backs can be used to protect the crews of lightweight combat vehicles against the detrimental and injurious effects of mine blasts. This protection includes reducing the shock energy experienced by seated vehicle crews during mine blast initiation and at vehicle slam-down to below potentially injurious levels. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the proposed lightweight, foam-filled, inflatable mine blast attenuating seat. It will consist of specially designed interconnected seat and seat back lightweight, foam-filed, air bladders that are supported by a rigid frame. [ ] Results Air gun tests and finite element analyses were conducted to determine the effectiveness of a light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seat shock isolation system in isolating a vehicle occupant from the injurious effects of a mine blast. Figures 2 through 5 show analytical and experimental results associated with a 65.8 kg mass resting on an inflatable air bladder that is exposed to a shock input.

"The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. One of the largest items in the expense of operating a refinery is the cost of the fuel used in distillation and for miscellaneous purposes such as in the heating of buildings and in the generation of electricity. On a B. t. u. basis, the average refinery consumes approximately one-tenth as much fuel as it produces. Theoretically, the fuel consumption at refineries should be much smaller than this, but furnaces can not be designed to be 100 per cent efficient and, in addition, a large part of the waste heat is low-temperature heat which would not pay for the expense of recovering it. Annual surveys of fuel consumption at refineries have been made by the United States Bureau of Mines, beginning with 1925. During the 5-year period, 1925-1929, the refineries made steady progress in fuel economy. This is evidenced by the computed figures of heat requirement per carrel of crude oil refined, which show a decline from 829,000 B. t. u. in 1925 to 639,000 B. t. u. in 1929 (see fig. 1). In 1930, however, 'the trend in fuel economy was reversed and the quantity of heat utilized in refining the average barrel of crude oil rose to 672,000 B. t. u. There were undoubtedly a number of reasons for the apparent decrease in fuel economy at refineries in 1930, chief of which were the tendency to carry the distillation farther instead of merely topping the crude and a gain in the consumption of waste oils, such as acid sludge, which in actual practice yield less heat per unit consumed than has been theoretically assigned to oil.
