The Bureau of Mines carbonized 35 coal samples from Logan and Mingo Counties) W. Va., at 900° C using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of cokes. Twenty samples represented the No.5 Block, Stockton, Chilton, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, No. 2 Gas, and Eagle beds in Logan County, and 15 samples represented the Coalburg, Buffalo Creek, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, and No.2 Gas beds in Mingo County, W. Va, Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. All coals in both counties rank as high-volatile A bituminous. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coals. Coals with accept-able ash and sulfur contents can be used as major constituents in coking blends with higher rank coal to yield coke with satisfactory properties for blast furnace use.

This report presents all available 900 ° C BM- AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of the southwest Virginia field in a form which permits ready comparison of product yields and properties of coals and cokes . Thirty- one channel samples from Buchanan , Dickenson , Russell , Tazewell , and Wise Counties were carbonized at 900 ° C in an 18 - inch - diameter retort . Blending properties of 10 of the coals were studied , and expansion of most of the coals and blends was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole - heated oven . Ash Most of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use in coking blends , and their coking properties generally were satisfactory . content exceeded 10 percent in only three samples , and none of the coals contained more than 1.5 percent sulfur . Dry , mineral - matter - free fixed - carbon content of the coals ranged from 62.1 to 77.5 percent . Expansion behavior varied widely , ranging from 16.8 percent expansion to 27.6 percent contraction .

The increasing demand for iron ores prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the sources of past production in Kentucky to determine whether reserves of usable ore still exist. Preliminary investigation showed that the holdings of the Rose Run Co. were the most promising, inasmuch as the deposit had not been exhausted by past mining and the property was near railroad facilities and but 80 miles from the blast furnaces at Ashland, Ky. The Bureau conducted a churn-drilling and sampling program to investigate the depth, thickness, and iron content of the ore beds so that they might be evaluated as a possible reserve of low-grade iron ores. The Rose Run area in Bath County, Ky., was explored by 74 churn-drill holes totaling 2,059.4 feet of drilling and 4 cuts and test pits. Fifty-seven drill holes and the four test pits penetrated the ore bed at an average depth of 22 feet. The bed had an average thickness of 2.54 feet. Analyses show that the calcium and magnesium carbonate content is more than sufficient to flux the silica and provides an excess that needs an admixture with other siliceous iron ores.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 295 natural gas samples from 18 States collected during calendar year 1963 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Five previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,998 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity , prior to 1963. The first three , Bulletin 486,5 Bulletin 576,6 and Bulletin 617,7/ contain analyses and source data on 5,214 gas samples collected from 1917 to January 1 , 1961. The fourth and fifth publications , which are published as Information Circulars , supplement the three Bulletins and contain 784 analyses of samples collected during 1961 and 1962. The present Information Circular is the third annual publication supplementing the three Bulletins .

Full-seam mining with continuous mining machines in dirty coal beds may increase loss of coal in the washery refuse. At one mine mentioned in this report the loss of salable coal was increased sixfold. Cleaning trials were made on three samples of jig refuse in a dense-medium pilot plant to demonstrate the application of this process to the recovery of coal from waste. These tests demonstrated that coal could be separated from impurity with the same degree of sharpness obtained in treating raw coal by dense medium. However, the recovery efficiency achieved in treating refuse averaged distinctly lower than that possible with raw coal because of the greater proportion of intermediate-density material in the feed and the lower yield of clean coal.

The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. Smith, supervising engineer , Fetroleum Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines , Bartlesville, Okla . , and under the direct supervision of Harold M. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coalbeds in Hancock , Brooke , Ohio , and Marshall Counties , W. Va . Over 4.5 million tons of coal was produced in these four counties in 1962. Most of this production came from the Pittsburgh coalbed . Twelve coal samples were collected for this study , 11 from the Pittsburgh bed and 1 from the Lower Freeport bed . Two of these samples could be upgraded to produce metallurgical - grade coal . The sulfur content of the Pittsburgh- bed coals was generally excessive --as high as 4.9 percent in the raw coal and 3.19 percent in the float 1.30 specific gravity fraction . The rank of the coals in this area ranges from high-volatile A to high-volatile B bituminous .

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with information regarding (1) the effects of jointing and bedding on rock fragmentation when bench blasting in two small-scale (2.5-ft) limestone benches, and (2) the successful use of inexpensive equipment and field techniques to determine the orientation and spacing of joints and bedding separations within the quarry. Using inexpensive equipment, such as a pocket transit and steel and paper tapes, joint and bedding separations were mapped and their frequencies measured. Results from two small-scale bench blasts in the Stewartville member of the Galena limestone formation showed that when the row of vertical blast-holes was oblique to the vertical joint orientations, the backface expression was outlined by two relatively large triangular protrusions (joint surfaces). In this blast, part of the rock burden was unbroken. When the line of vertical blastholes paralleled a predominant joint set, all of the rock burden was broken and displaced. The thickness of fragments that had been displaced by a blast correlated with the observed bedding thickness in the bench.

This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed

Asphalts from. Wyoming "black oils" are being studied at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo., in cooperation with the University of Wyoming. These black oils are characterized by their high-asphalt, high-sulphur, and low-gasoline content and are difficult to refine by present methods into high-octane motor fuels, burning oils, and lubricants. Accordingly, their principal use, at present, is for the manufacture of road oil and asphalt. The present production of black oil could be increased to meet a greater demand. During 1937 the daily production of these crude oils in Wyoming was slightly over 13,000 barrels, while the estimated potential production from existing wells was 56,000 barrels.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. The Bureau hereby acknowledges its appreciation of the hearty spirit of cooperation that was universally encountered.

Fifty years ago, the belief that "fillers" were added to paints for the sole purpose of diluting and cheapening the pigment may have been justified; but paint technology has made tremendous progress since that time, and today both the manufacturer and the consumer know that the judicious use of fillers may add desirable properties to a paint that cannot be introduced in any other way. A growing respect for these accessory materials has led to the use of the more euphemistic term "extender." The names "extender" and "filler" are to a considerable degree synonymous. The newer term, "extender," is adopted in this paper, though it is actually no more descriptive than the older name. Stewart's3/ definition of extender is: "A cheap pigment, usually of an inert type, used to extend or increase the bulk of a paint, thus reducing its unit cost. Extenders are also used to adjust the consistency of a paint and to let down colored pigments of great tinting strength. The use of an extender in a paint does not necessarily mean the resultant product will be inferior. In fact, extenders sometimes, improve -certain characteristics of a film." All extenders are not cheap, as, for example, wet-ground mica and diatomite. Research in the, use of extenders (also sometimes called "inerts") has been one of the host active branches of study in the paint field; and many thousands of dollars have been spent in establishing the physical and chemical characteristics required of various natural mineral extenders for numerous paint formulas

Conservation in the utilization of any product is always subject to improvement if the composition and properties of the product are known. Petroleum is no exception, and knowledge of the characteristics of crude oils, even when given on the broad basis of routine type analyses has proved useful to chemists, engineers, and geologists in improving pro- duction and utilization of petroleum. For a quarter of a century the Bureau of Mines has sought to provide such information regarding crude oils and has analyzed many samples of petroleum by its standardized rou- tine method. Most of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published up to January 1, 1948. The routine method used for all these analyses is basically the same as that described by Dean, et al.. Briefly, the procedure consists of testing by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, and viscosity, and of distilling a sample of the crude oil by a standardized procedure and determining certain properties in the sep- arated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the proce- dure, and the distillation data obtained are used to calculate the approx- imate amounts of products present in the sample such as percents of gas- oline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The data obtained are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of typical midcontinent crude oil is shown in table 1. Compilation of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses are often shown in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports. The preparation characteristics of the coals of Buchanan County, Va., are described in this Bureau of Mines report. Twenty-one samples ,,,ere collected from 9 coalbeds in the county. Of these samples 13 were of metallurgical quality as received, and 8 required some upgrading to provide acceptable products. In general, the coals were of low to medium ash and sulfur content, and ranked as medium-to high-volatile bituminous. In 1963, production in the county was in excess of 13 million tons, of which 2.2 million tons were mechanically cleaned.

In July 1948, the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and mine operators, published Report of Investigations 4306, "A Combination Cleaning and Dewatering Process for Treating Fine 'Sizes of Coal, Preliminary Report In this report a new process, referred to as kerosene flotation; was described, and results of experimental work with the process Previous to the fall of 1947 were given, The contents of the report. were summarized on pages 19 and 20' as follows: In coal-preparation plants using wet methods of cleaning, the most difficult problem is the cleaning and dewatering of the "fines" from about 10-Mesh to 0. A combination proceed is now under investigation that shows promise of practically and feasibly solving this problem. The process is similar to froth flotation, but a generous quantity of kerosene is used as one of the reagents, and the feed is from approximately 10-mesh to 0 considerably coarser than the usual froth flotation feed. The kerosene and the coarseness of the reed result in a floated product that, under certain circumstances, can be dewatered satisfactorily by a simple process of mechanical squeezing, Squeezing is accomplished by means of an ordinary conveying' Auger-and trough assembly with a section of pipe easing at the outer end of the trough. The bottom of the trough and. casing is fitted with wedge-wire sections to permit escape of the water freed by the squeezing action of the auger. On account of the important role of the kerosene, the process has been referred to in this report as kerosene flotation. Up to now, the investigative work has been divided about evenly between the laboratory and commercial plants. Nearly all of the work has been done on sludges containing the solids from the underflow of dewatering screens. A few runs have been made on 10-mesh to 0: fines from raw coal, but in some of those runs the dewatering mechanism, failed to function.

These properties were examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in 1949. During 1950, these mines were studied by the Bureau to determine the possibility of increasing the production and augmenting the supply of fluorspar. As a result of this study, it was decided to core-drill the Knox-Yingling vein to test the continuation of fluorspar to a greater depth than that reached by mine workings. It also was desired to relate the present deposit with the Rosiclare formation. Development work by the Bureau of Mines was performed from February to May inclusive in 1951. Four diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,733 feet were drilled in the hanging wall of the vein.

This publication contains the quantitative values for phosphorus , chlorine , sodium , and potassium in United States coals . The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . Due to combining the analytical results from two separate surveys , values for the four elements are not available for all samples .

The Bureau of Mines conducted pressure-drop studies in a 4-foot-diameter simulated blast furnace shaft to compare anthracite metallurgical briquets with coke and formcoke. The test materials were used alone, layered, and in mixed burdens of commercial fuel-to-ore ratios. Anthracite briquets had a higher pressure drop per foot than furnace coke, but they had a lower pressure drop per foot than formcoke. This appears to be due to packing and shape, as well as to particle size. The superficial air velocities at which beds of briquets and furnace coke disrupted were about the same. However, if briquets of the shapes and sizes tested are substituted for furnace coke in commercial metallurgical furnaces, higher blowing pressures will be required to deliver comparable amounts of air. Test burdens with more than 5 percent material smaller than 1/4-inch diameter showed significant increases in resistance to airflow.
