Seven samples were analyzed from the major reserves of the Bottom Red Ash bed, Northern anthracite field. The data show variations in thickness and geo-logic structure and in the amount of coal that can be recovered. Recovery of market-grade (less than 17 percent ash) coal is high for all samples, ranging from 76 tp 95 percent in the 3-1/4-by 9/16-inch sizes. The occurrence of coal containing less than 5 percent ash varies from 19.5 to as much as 57.5 percent. Crushing the coarse sizes to minus 9/16 inch increased recovery of market-grade coal in six of seven bed samples. Crushing released sufficient impurities to cause substantial increases in yield of coal containing less than 5 percent ash for all samples. Analyses of the float coal indicate that the quality of coal is comparable for all samples.

Solvent extraction techniques were used to determine the extraction sequence of yttrium and the rare-earth elements in an amine solvent extraction system. Single-stage extraction with Primene 81-R resulted in separation factors of 3.8 between yttrium and dysprosium and 25 between yttrium and cerium. Yttrium was concentrated in the aqueous phase. EDTA and DTPA, as aqueous phase counterextractants, enhance separation factors in mine-rare-earth sulfate systems. Yttrium separation from heavy rare-earth elements exhibits marked sensitivity to the position of yttrium in the selectivity scale of the rare-earth elements with the sequestrants. Yttrium-ytterbium separation is more effective with EDTA, whereas yttrium-dysprosium separation is more effectively increased with DTPA.

Bureau of Mines studies were made on the sensitivity of several ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures to bullet impact. The experimental work was done with one military rifle and two high-velocity sporting rifles with a variety of ammunition. For the three rifles used, the order of efficiency in initiating detonation in AN-FO mixtures was 220 Swift >300 Weatherby Magnum >30-&apos;06. The velocity of the bullet was found to be a decisive factor in the initiation. The sensitivity of various materials studied increased as follows: Clay-coated prills with 4 percent oil <fresh surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil <surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil and aged 270 days <crushed prills with 6 percent oil <very low-density, surfactant-coated prills (micronized), with 4 percent oil.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations-in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Deparment of the Interior. It presents analytical data for 4,397 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1952 and January and February 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed available data on the effect of crushing high-sulfur coals for the liberation of impurities in the light of increasingly stringent air pollution regulations. The survey, which provided information on Appalachian region coals only, indicated that such important coal- beds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14-mesh top size. A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the winter 1951-52 is presented in table I, and for comparison, a similar summary for the winter 1950-51 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. The results of this survey show that octane numbers have risen slightly since the summer of 1951 but are below the record levels of the winter of 1950-51. The fractions of a unit change since the summer preceding have resulted in the research and motor-method octane values being virtually the same as the figures for the survey of summer 1950. In volatility characteristics the winter gasolines have changed very little. Average Reid vapor pressures are 10.5 pounds for both grades of fuel compared to 10.4 and 10.5 pounds for premium and regular-price gasolines, respectively, of the winter of 1950-51.

Underground mining methods at the Gray mine of Tri-State Zinc, Inc., are of special interest because of the low unit costs achieved through use of jumbos and loading equipment mounted un crawler-type tracks and of diesel trucks that haul from the stoping areas to the mill through inclined adits. The operating company, Tri-State Zinc, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields American Development Co., Ltd., the latter being the American branch of New Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., a British-owned company.

"This paper is based on the development of the Maza-Austin technique for characterizing thousands of coal particles by approximate analysis of the major inorganic constituents Ca, Al, Si, K, Na, Fe and S in each particle. The technique has sufficient sensitivity to work on small volumes, is fast enough to handle large number of particles within a reasonable period of time, and consists of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEK-EDS). A computerized SEK-EDS system that allows the automated analysis of hundreds of coal particles per hour' is described. The analysis is based on the location and tracing of coal particles embedded in a polished specimen, the selection of sampling points on the traced particles, the collection of an x-ray spectrum from each sampled point for a defined period of time, and the processing of the x-ray intensity to calculate point composition using ZAF corrections. Procedures for correcting for dead time, background, detector efficiency and spectrum overlap are described. These corrections are essential if reasonably accurate analyses are to be obtained from unknown complex mixtures of the elements in a coal or fly ash particle. Examples are given. INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic materials. The inorganic fraction is referred to as mineral matter (Gluskoter, 1978) but can occur in three modes: (i) an observable mineral species; (ii) as cations held by ion exchange to carboxylic groups; and (iii) in chelate complexes. The mineral matter content normally represents a significant proportion of a coal, with an average value of about 15% for US coals (Gluskoter, 1975). The standard methods of analysis of the mineral matter in coals are performed on a sample selected to represent the whole coal as closely as possible, and give the overall inorganic composition in the coal. Such analyses are of limited use for solving problems originating from the behavior of individual coal particles, whose compositions vary widely from the average value. This is particularly true in pulverized coal combustion, where the current methods of predicting the slagging and ·fouling potential of a coal are based on the bulk ash composition, but the fly ash particles which create the deposits originate from coal particles with large differences in mineral compo1ition. Some examples can be found where, in a comparison between two coals, the one with the smaller slagging potential according to the mean ash composition was the one that behaved worst in the furnace (Moza et al., 1980; Koza and Austin, 1983). The u1e of gravity fractionation to assess the slagging potential of pulverized coals has shown that conventional ASTM analysis is not sensitive to differences in the distribution of mineral matter when comparing coals (Borio and Narciso, 1979). Bryer (1979) concluded that coals should be examined for fouling and slagging potential by analyzing gravimetric and size-fractionated coal, preferably pulverized· and ground to the size expected at the mill outlet."

A 32-channel continuous monitoring system has been developed to monitor radiation working level (WL), fan operation, and air door position. The system consists of a surface receiver unit and an underground transmitter that is connected to the various monitors. A continuous WL monitor used with the system can generate alarms at two different WL readings. One of these levels is variable from 0.00 to 0.99 WL and generates an alarm on the surface receiver. The other level, fixed at 1.0 WL, generates an underground alarm in the vicinity of the monitor. The detectors for fan operation and air door position work on the principle of a completed circuit to the underground transmitter (multiplexer). When the circuit is broken, as is the case when a fan is off or an air door is open, an alarm is generated at the surface receiver. This alarm remains in effect until the circuit is completed, signifying the fan has been turned on or the air door has been closed.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the response to sulfatization of diverse low-grade manganiferous materials in the iron formation of the Cuyuna district. In line with this objective a bench-scale sulfatizing procedure was developed that was less expensive and more rapid than pilot-plant methods. Samples from the central and south- western parts of the North range were tested. Results of evaluating a total of 46 pelletized samples, originating in areas with an estimated potential resource of 94 million long tons with a manganese content of 7 percent, indicates that approximately 87 percent of the manganese may be recovered as a synthetic manganese ore. This is equivalent to more than 12 million long tons of a metallurgical-grade ore, containing 46 percent manganese. It is anticipated that a premium product, containing over 50 percent manganese, may be obtained by sulfatizing procedures. The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.2 The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; 1960, 5.3 feet; and 1965, 5.2 feet.3 Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by 1-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness--less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet--a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1965, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free- swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1963 . In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 6,999 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . Only a limited number of mass and infrared reference spectra of high purity unsaturated hydrocarbons and oxygenates are presently available in the literature. To aid Bureau of Mines research programs requiring such references, 64 mass spectra and 70 infrared spectra were obtained and are reported. The individual compounds, acquired from commercial sources, were purified by preparatory gas chromatography. Purity determinations were made using a combination of analytical gas chromatography, microhydrogenation, and catalytic deoxygenation. These spectra will aid spectroscopists in the identification of compounds of the types reported.

"The pollution of streams has received much attention during the last few years, and although there are many other and more serious forms of pollution, the problem of acid mine drainage is important in certain sections of the country, particularly in Pennsylvania. At the request of the United States Public Health Service the Bureau of Mines undertook to determine some of the factors contributing to formation of acid mine waters, the yearly variations in quantity and quality of drainage, effect of mining methods, and various other questions arising in connection with the problem; some attention was also given to its economic phases.In acknowledgment, the writer wishes to thank Dr. R. R. Sayers, Chief surgeon; A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist; and W. P. Yant, supervising chemist, health laboratory section of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, all of the Bureau of Mines, under whose direction the work was conducted.Because no data of a like nature had previously been determined, and with the thought that such data would throw additional light on the general subject, a stream having a number of mines draining into it was selected for observation in both high-sulphur and low-sulphur bituminous-coal districts, as designated in commercial rating. These mines and streams were visited in both wet and dry seasons to note the quantity and variations in acidity of mine drainage and the subsequent effect on streams. Maps of these streams with the sampling points are shown in Figures 1 and 2. In a report of this nature a great deal of tabular data is best emitted, but reference to the maps will serve to indicate the factors that determined sampling points, such as tributary streams and gobs."

"While distribution of air currents to working faces is a necessity in coal mines, especially those having explosive gas, advancing faces in metal mines rarely have circulating air other than the ordinarily inadequate amount supplied through the compressed air system. Even where comparatively large quantities of air pass through main mine shafts and levels. whether the circulation is actuated by fans or by natural ventilation, only occasionally can a metal mine be found where any considerable percentage of the ""blind ends"" has circulating air of sufficient velocity to be measured by an anemometer or even be discerned by deflection of flame of candle, or of acetylene lamp; and unfortunately these ""blind ends"" include nearly all of the places from which rock is taken.During several years study of metal-mine ventilation in various mining districts of the United States, it has been found that in some mines many of the workers in ""blind ends"" practically continually breathe air with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent of CO gas from unremoved fumes from explosives; in other mines CO2 chiefly from timber decay and breathing of men, is so high that a candle will not burn though usually the acetylene lamp will, hence oxygen is below 17 per cent but above 12 per cent; in some regions CO2 from strata fills the entire mine forcing cessation of work; in other mines in dead ends, gases such as nitrogen, H2S, SO2, etc., are found under some conditions. In many regions with hot rock or water (especially in deep workings) men in blind ends must work with little or no circulation, in air above SO degrees F. and even above 90 degrees, relative humidity only too frequently being around 100 per cent; in other regions workers in blind ends in practically ""dead"" air must continually breathe enormous quantities of finely divided rock dusts. All of the above conditions are decidedly harmful to health and prevent the worker from delivering anything approaching an adequate quantity of work, and in addition, some of these conditions have direct or indirect effect in bringing about definite increase of accidents; all of the above mentioned bad conditions in ""blind ends"" in metal mines as well as their ill effects, are remediable by providing at those places adequate quantities of fresh circulating air."

The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is held each year for the purpose of promoting safety in the mineral industries of the United States. Since the program was inaugurated in 1925, twenty-three safety competitions have been held. This publication is a report of the results of the contests held in 1944, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The names of plants that have been awarded "Sentinels of Safety" trophies and Certificates of Achievement in Safety dur- ing these years, together with a summary of their achievements in injury prevention, are listed. Statistical data covering the injury experience of all plants entered in the annual contests also are included in this publi- cation. The injury statistics of these plants, arranged in the six groups of the competition, are the only data on injury severity at mineral operations available to the Bureau of Mines. Interest in the National Safety Competition has increased steadily. The number of participating plants has increased from 210 in 1925, the first year of the competition, to the record number of 494 in 1946. The widening scope of the competition means that a steadily increasing number of the mines and quarries in the United States are participating in a program that will supplement their other activities in promoting safety. Safety competitions have long been recognized as instrumental in stimulating and holding the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention work. During the years covered by this report, conditions in the mineral industries of the United States were hardly conducive to setting records in accident prevention. During the war years, handicaps were especially severe- loss of skilled employees to the armed forces or to higher-wage war industries, greater production by a smaller force of workers, relatively high rates of labor turn-over, the longer workday in effect through 1944 and 1945, and difficulties in obtaining repairs and replacement for badly worn machinery. Even the immediate postwar period has brought no abatement of the tremendous pressure upon the mineral industries for greater production. Although there was a decrease of 18 in 1947 from the record enrollment in 1946, these oper- ations worked 160,525,025 man-hours, the greatest number of man-hours of exposure to mining hazards in any year of the contest except 1942. Despite the accelerated pace at which the mineral industry worked during the 4 years covered by this report, participants in the National Safety Competition have achieved creditable performances in the promotion of safety. In fact, the injury-severity rate in the enrolled plants in the 1947 contest was 7.315 days for each thousand man-hours worked, the lowest by far in the history of the National Safety Competition. These properties are based on correlations of the extant data for the entropy, vapor heat capacity, and enthalpy of formation of individual alkanes and the equilibrium constants of alkane isomerization reactions.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of various additions of rare-earth metals or rare-earth oxides on the mechanical properties of cast and wrought plain-carbon steels. Rare-earth metals, as misch metal, were added to medium-carbon steel in amounts to 0.70 weight-percent; rare-earth oxides, as a commercial mixture, were added in amounts to 1.50 weight-percent. The melting and casting of conditioned steels were done in a vacuum-induction furnace, to avoid formation of oxides from the melting atmosphere and to pro-vide better control over chemical composition. At room temperature, data for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness of cast and wrought steels were obtained by standard testing equipment and procedures. Impact tests were conducted on as-cast steel specimens. The greatest amount of tensile ductility and impact strength was obtained in as-cast steel with 0.50 to 0.70 weight-percent misch metal additions. No significant improvement on mechanical properties was indicated in wrought steels containing rare-earth metal additions in the range from 0.10 to 0.70 weight-percent. In general, the rare-earth oxide additions up to 1.50 weight-percent had little effect on the tensile properties of steel in the cast, wrought and annealed, or wrought and normalized condition.
