"Modification of Quarry Process.Limestone beds are formed by processes of nature, processes that have been in operation for thousands and perhaps millions of years. Therefore, their com- position and physical properties are long-established and unalterable features over which man has no control. He must take them as he fields them.It is undoubtedly true that the character of lime depends largely on the nature of the parent limestone. A high-calcium lime cannot be manufactured from a dolomite, nor can a pure lime result from the calcination of an impure raw material. However, in the process of turning limestone into lime man is not entirely helpless in his control of quality. Even though a deposit is variable in character a single lime product of uniform quality may be produced by judicious quarrying. A single grade of product may not always be desired, the producer may wish to supply the needs of a variety of users each demanding U different grade or quality of lime such a series of graded products may be produced in part at least by modifying the quarry method. Thus, by changes in quarry practice a single product or a variety of products may be made. The latter problem will be considered at a later time, and the present paper devoted to the first named question' that of producing a single grade of lime from a deposit of variable rock,It is realized of course that uniformity in the product is influenced greatly by manufacturing processes such as calcining' hydrating' grinding or storage, but the present discussion is confined to the influence of raw materials only. In considering the various devices that may be employed it is realized that much remains to be learned, and it is hoped that many operators will contribute to the discussion as they have already done in connection with previous papers of this series."

More gold is being produced now than ever before in recorded history. All over the world huge quantities of ore are being mined and processed, thanks to historically high prices for gold and the use of processing techniques demonstrated as cost efficient in the last 20 years. Over the past 10-15 years prices for many other metals have been depressed, and gold has accounted for a significant proportion of worldwide exploration and development expenditures(l)1. The revenues generated from gold mining are providing greater return on investment, more jobs, and more tax revenues to national governments than ever before. Emerging nations are using the gold industry as a springboard for development; developed nations are continuing to fuel their economies with gold industry revenues; and China and countries of the former Soviet Union are using the gold industry to generate foreign exchange, modernize their mining industries, and take the first tentative steps toward private sector participation in their economies.

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. Dans le cadre d’études sur la sécurité et la stabilité de trois mines souterraines situées aux États-Unis, les chercheurs ont installé des palpeurs de pression des terres et des extensomètres d’encastrement dans les remblais cimentés afin de mesurer les variations relatives à l’effort et à la déformation des terrains durant l’exploitation minière et le chargement du remblai. Scale inhibitors and slow-release polymers were tested by the Bureau of Mines at mine drainage treatment facilities. The scale inhibitors were investigated to determine their effectiveness in controlling gypsum (CaSO4) scale; the polymers were investigated to determine their effectiveness for increasing settling rates of suspended iron hydroxide. Two types of scale inhibitors were tested at a site having a severe CaSO4 scaling problem. Both proved to be effective in controlling scale formation; in addition, one caused the dissolution of CaSO4 deposits. Slow-release polymers were tested at three mine drainage treatment facilities. These gelatinous polymeric flocculants were found to be convenient and easy to use, but only effective when pH could be controlled.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the methane content of a coal, which depends primarily upon rank and pressure, from the adsorption equation V kpn, where k and n are constants related to rank. By incorporating corrections for moisture, ash, and temperature, and estimating pressure and temperature as a function of depth, the methane content of coal in place can be estimated from the following equation: [ ] Values calculated with this equation generally are in reasonable agreement with direct determinations. By assuming a standard moisture and ash content, and using the hydrostatic head to estimate pressure, a graph of rank and depth versus gas content was constructed. Although estimated values were consistently high for several high-volatile bituminous coals from an area where the pressure is known to be less than hydrostatic, the estimated methane content for most coals shows reasonable agreement with values determined by the direct method.

The objective of these papers is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating reliable technological information on mining methods, practices, and results that may be applied to the engineering analysis and solution of mining problems. SUMMARY Operation of a limestone quarry producing flux for the steel industry and crushed stone for production of concrete is described in this report. The deposit being mined is a flat-lying limestone formation under a thin overburden 2 to 25 feet thick. The height of the quarry face varies from 9 to 60 feet, averaging 40 feet. Production rate ranges from 4.5 to 5 million long tons per year.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. The Maximum Reducing Power of Fuel Gases on the Oxides of IronsThe gases that heve been considered specifically in this work are coal gas, water gas and producer gas, typical analyses” of which are given in Table 1 Of the various hydrocarbons represented in Table 1, (several being grouped or averaged as C2R4), methane is the only gas assumed to be capable of existence at appreciable pressures under the conditions of interest here. The heat contents of four silicate minerals -- akermanite , cordierite , gehlenite , and merwinite --were measured from 298 ° to around 1,700 ° K by the dropping method . The results were compiled into tabular and equation forms suitable for thermodynamic calculations . The heat contents of these compounds are nearly additive with respect to their constituent oxides .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.

A method was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for evaluating viscosity data from slurries obtained in leaching sinters from the lime soda sinter process for extracting alumina from aluminous silicates. The logarithm of the viscosity was observed to be a linear function with time. The slope of the plotted line provides a means for evaluating viscosity behavior in a lime soda sinter blurry and also a means for comparing gelation characteristics directly with other variables in the lime soda sinter process. This report presents one aspect of a continuing study by the Bureau of Mines on methods for treating siliceous aluminum ores. It is one of the many programs of the Bureau concerned with conservation, development, and use of our domestic minerals resources. Previous investigations of lime soda processes, both by the Bureau4-7/ and industrial concerns, have demonstrated that sintered materials containing CaO, Na2O, A1203, and S102 in various combinations exhibit a tendency to gel or set when mixed with water or other extraction solutions. Gelling prevents satisfactory recovery of alumina and in extreme cases prevents operation of an extraction plant.

Four samples of manganese-bearing material from the Aroostook County, Maine, deposits were tested at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., to determine their amenability to beneficiation by ore-dressing methods. The samples represented material from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit, the Dudley farm, and the Burnham farm and contained 11 to 14 percent manganese. None of the tests produced appreciably enriched concentrates suitable for further treatment for the production of ferromanganese. The intimate association of the manganese minerals with iron and siliceous minerals requires extremely fine grinding to liberate the manganese minerals in these ores and prevents efficient concentration by physical means.

This is one of a series of papers being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods and costs at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized' tat publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. However, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no mis-understanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. As part of an ongoing study to determine how the wear of mining tools affects dust generation, the Bureau of Mines has measured bit tempera-ture rise during cutting of abrasive rock. Radial bit wear-flat tem-peratures generated by linear cutting in Berea Sandstone were measured as a function of cutting depth and speed. Depths of cut (DOC) were 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in, and cutting speeds were 10, 40, and 80 in/s, respectively. Temperature sensing was accomplished by emplacement of a miniature thermocouple into the center of the wear flat. Temperatures observed ranged from 2000 to 5000 C. Correlation between depth and temperature was weak. Temperature increased linearly with speed at 1/2-in DOC, but data taken at 1/8-and 1/4-in DOC produced inconclusive results. The results indicated that at least for deeper cuts (1/2 in), bit temperature, and therefore wear, can be reduced by lowering the cutting speed.

The dielectric constant .has been frequently referred to as an important property in electrostatic separation whore the particles are in an air ambient. Hatfield (1) has studied the problem on the basis of fundamental theory, with the conclusion that separations in air dependent on the differences in dielectric constant, in conjunction with a nonhomogeneous field, are not feasible, because of the low dielectric strength of the air. Although Hatfield has made the statement without showing the calculation or data, calculated values substantiating this under certain conditions of the problem will be given in the following text. However, under other Conditions, these conclusions do not hold, and it is probable that the dielectric constant is indirectly influential.

This report presents preliminary results of a study undertaken to investigate quantitative characteristics of the demand for steel mill products and its major end-use components. The major end uses included in the study are the steel mill products used in construction, in automobiles, in producer durables, and in consumer durables. The main objectives of the research underlying this study are as follows: (1) To formulate and estimate the empirical demand relations for steel and the four major end uses in the United States; (2) to measure and calculate the responsiveness of the U.S. per capita steel consumption with respect to the changes of the steel and other nonferrous metals prices; (3) to determine and quantify the relative importance of the underlying demand explanatory factors in contributing to the average year-to-year increases (or decreases) of the U.S. per capita steel consumption; and (4) to adapt and use the estimated demand relations in making projections of the U.S. future demand for steel and the major end-use components. After extensive preliminary investigation, three versions of simple linear demand relations are selected and estimated by means of ordinary least squares (OLS) method. The annual data for the period 1947-65 are used in the estimation. Direct and cross price elasticities of demand are computed for each of major end uses. The relative importance of demand explanatory factors in contributing to the average year-to-year changes of U.S. per capita steel consumption are also calculated. For making projections, a simple autoregressive time trend model is used in estimating the future values of independent variables. Since the estimated demand relations are valid for projections only if the estimated parameters can be assumed to be unchanged in the future, and consequently, the projections derived in the study should be interpreted accordingly.

Experiments were conducted to determine the optical scattering properties of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and various combustion aerosols from both flaming and smoldering combustion sources at discrete angles of 151 and 301 in the forward direction and at a light source wave length of 635 nm using a simple light scattering module. In addition to the scattering data, simultaneous measurements were made of the total aerosol mass concentration; light extinction at an average wave length of 546nm; and the response of a common bipolar ion chamber typical of residential smoke detectors modified to allow the aerosols to flow through the chamber. The results of these experiments indicate, for DPM and combustion aerosols, the intensities per unit mass concentration depend not only upon whether the aerosolis DPM or combustion aerosol but also upon the type of combustion aerosol. The results also indicate that the ion chamber responses are greatest for DPM, followed by the response to flaming combustion aerosols (FCA)and lowest for smoldering combustion aerosols (SCA). For light scattering, the greatest intensities are found for SCA, followed by the intensities from FCA, and lowest for DPM. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results to developed sign criteria for early warning fire sensor capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by the products produced from diesel engines. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. "One of the functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to investigate the ability of electrical mining equipment to operate in a gassy mine without danger of igniting explosive atmospheres. To accomplish this purpose, tests are made in which mixtures of gas and air are ignited in the equipment while it is surrounded by explosive atmospheres of the same composition. In such tests, records of pressures developed by the internal ex-plosions are obtained and observations are made of any flames, sparks, or smoke which may issue from bearings and joints. Occasionally the explosion pressures in a mining machine rheostat or a compartment of some other machine reach a value which is judged to be excessive or abnormal.A number of factors are known to influence the explosion pressures, and both German and. British investigators have irate extensive research on their effects. Much of this work had been done with artificial compartment which certain conditions could c held, constant while others were being varied. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has not made any research on a scale to compare with that of the British or German investigators; however, special studies have been necessary from time to time to determine the cause and remedy for high pressures obtained in the routine test of some piece of mining machinery. Thus it has been possible to verify some of tee theories established on a purely experimental oasis by practical tests of machines as actually built for mine use.Some of the factors determined the pressure that will result when an explosive mixture in a compartment or connected compartment is ignited are: (1) The volume of explosive mixture ignited, (2) the percentage of as in the mixture, (3) the amount of coal-dust in the compartment or compartments, (4) the degree of movement or turbulence of the mixture at the time of ignition, (6) tightness of the joints and bearings, (6) the size of opening between, compartments, (7) the distance between the point of ignition and openings, and (8) the cooling, effect of surfaces and of material inclosed in the compartments."

The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Hecla Mining Co., is conducting a rock mechanics study of the 6,200-ft-deep circu-lar, concrete-lined Silver Shaft in northern Idaho. The objective of the project was to instrument and evaluate lining behavior and rock de-formation when a deep shaft is constructed in a high in situ stress field and anisotropic rock mass. Rock mass displacements were moni-tored with multiple-position borehole extensometers. Liner stress and strain were measured with concrete pressure cells and embedment strain gauges. Field data from the 5,955-ft test level show that rock displacement is controlled by rock mass anisotropy. Liner stress and strain levels reflect the high in situ stress field as well as nearby station and raise construction. Maximum stresses measured in the lining, as a result of shaft excavation, are about one-third of its compressive strength. Subsequent loading pocket excavation resulted in signifi-cantly increased stress and strain levels in the liner. Continued monitoring and preliminary analysis of the data indicate that concrete-lined, circular shafts are stable for the high, unequal horizontal stress fields and rock anisotropy encountered in deep-level mining. Adjacent development work can be expected to significantly alter the initial stress and displacement conditions.
