It is the seventh in a series of reports prepared in cooperation with the American Association of Cost Engineers. In 1984 and 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 27,420-acre part of the 36,600-acre Southern Inyo Wilderness Study Area, CA-010-056, in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Inyo County, CA, near the town of Lone Pine, about 180 miles north of Los Angeles. The study area takes in most of the western slope of the southern Inyo Mountains. Terrain is steep and rugged; the climate is arid. The study area is underlain by folded and faulted marine sedimentary rocks dating from Ordovician to Triassic, Triassic volcanic rocks, and Jurassic to Cretaceous plutonic rocks. Most mineralization was along faults and shear zones in sedimentary rocks. The study area includes most of the Russ and Lone Pine mining districts which produced over one million dollars in gold, silver, lead, and zinc, mostly between 1860 and 1890. A few mines produced ore as late as 1951. Most production was from the Reward, Silver Spur, Long John, and Pennsylvania mines which are outside the study area. Presently, there is no mining activity in the study area; some development work was done at the Reward mine between 1981 and 1984. Dolomite marble is quarried from the base of the range outside the study area. There are currently about 70 mining claims in the study area.

Previous research conducted for the USBM by Penn State personnel (Grant GO-101729) found that a need existed to physically model a typical a-c/d-c coal mine section electrical system. Its purpose would be to permit preliminary evaluations of electrical problem solutions prior to launching full-scale investigations. Such use can result in greater flexibility than afforded by present computer models. Furthermore, numerous problems, which would be virtually impossible to incorporate in a computer model at this time, are more easily analyzed with physical simulation. The development of this system is now proceeding at the USBM's Bruceton Research Facilities. However, electrical specifications of scaled down components for its construction are required. This project is a result of that need and has been funded as an extension to Grant GO-133077. The following report covers these specifications. Scope of Work To represent a mined a-c/d-r. coal mine section, the typical component specifications must detail at least: a. one a-c continuous miner, b. two a-c or d-c shuttle cars, c. one a-c or d-c roof bolter, d. one a-c section fan, and e. feeder cables. The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a full-scale model of a 15-ft-wide coal mine entry to use in combination with finite-element analyses to investigate roof support systems and various types of roof bolts. The objective was to enhance understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the interaction between rock and supports and the relative integrity of bolted mine roof as a function of roof bolt type, length, spacing, and tension, and the basic characteristics of the roof strata. The laboratory test results, when correlated with computer simulations using fmite-element analysis and underground verification tests, should provide a basis for desigillng safer, more cost-effective roof control systems and help to establish guidelines for employing fully grouted resin and mechanically anchored bolting systems. The background for this research, the research approach, the methods and equipment employed, and the results are described in this report.

The principal objective of this Program is the design, fabrication and testing of an Environmental System for operation in underground mines, to assess the effect of various mining systems on the contaminant levels near the mine face and within return airways. In order to determine the effect on airborne contamination in mines resulting from the development of new mining techniques, equipment and control systems, a Comprehensive Monitoring System is required to assess such contamination levels at critical and strategic locations and relate this information with ventilation parameters. The three variables to be sensed on a continuous basis are airborne dust concentration, methane concentration and ventilation air velocity. Each Monitoring Station will consist of a self-contained unit containing a power source and sensors to monitor the three above mentioned parameters. Ruggedness, reliability, ease 'of operation and intrinsic safety are important design objectives. Data gathered by each Monitoring Station will be fed to a Central Data Acquisition System by means of a portable transfer unit.

The Bureau of Mines conducted this study to provide information concerning the availability of and the demand for construction-mineral aggregates in the Baltimore, Md., Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). The demand is discussed with reference to the area's current consumption and estimates of the area's demand for aggregates through 1990. Estimates of aggregate supply are presented in conjunction with an examination of the geology of the area, the availability of substitutes, and the effect of transportation costs. A discussion of the constraints affecting aggregate availability precedes the conclusions and recommendations. The availability of aggregates is subject to geologic, economic, and political constraints. As of January 1974, an estimated 20,100 million tons of stone was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (188.7 million tons). An estimated 139 million tons of sand and gravel was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (84.3 million tons). Several alternative actions are available within the area to insure the adequacy of the stone supply and to increase the supply of sand and gravel: (1) The establishment of special mineral resource zones; (2) the application of sequential land use techniques; and (3) the exploration of previously undeveloped regions.

This paper is the second of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. The writers wish to express their appreciation to the management of the International Smelting Company at Tooele. Utah, for their kind cooperation which made possible the assembling of these data.

For several years the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, U. S. Air Force, has been studying zirconium alloys. A preliminary survey of these alloys has been completed and reported as a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations. 4/ Originally the purpose was to determine the suitability of zirconium alloys in medium-temperature applications. However, data also were obtained on other properties of these alloys, and later the scope was broadened to include amore detailed investigation of a selected group. The zirconium-titanium system was one of those chosen. The Bureau of Mines has been instrumental in the commercial development of both of these metals and has constructed pilot plants for the production of titanium at Boulder City, Nev., and for zirconium at Albany, Oreg. Both elements are in subgroup A, fourth series of the periodic table, and therefore have many properties in common. Since both have similar atomic structures and lattice dimensions the possibility of extended mutual solubility seemed likely. Inc transition-point diagram of Fast indicated that the two metals are completely miscible in all proportions in both the alpha and beta forms.

The investigation reported herein is concerned with the generation and propagation of the strain wave produced in rock by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive. This report is the second of a series that will deal with this and related problems. The rock type in which these experiments were carried out was greenstone. Subsequent reports will discuss similar investigations in other rock types. Specifically, the problem under study is concerned with how certain characteristics of the strain wave, such as the maximum compressive and tensile strain, the maximum time rate of change of strain, the frequency components present in the pulse, the duration of the pulse, and other measurable characteristics, vary with the size of the charge and the distance from the detonation point to the point of measurement. . Other investigators have studied certain aspects of the generation and propagation problem in rock. However, in these studies the travel distances from the detonation to measurement point were comparatively long and the frequency components in the explosive wave were usually under 100 c.p.s. In this study the detonation to measurement distance covered. the range from 2 to 54 feet, and the strain gages and recording equipment employed in the instrumentation of the problem had a frequency response range from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s.

The Bayer process treating Jamaican bauxite was evaluated from an economic standpoint, using standard estimating methods and published data, to present a reference point for cost estimates for nonbauxite alumina processes. The estimated operating cost for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day is $47.96 per ton of alumina when charging $8 per ton for bauxite and $2.30 per hour for direct labor. The estimated fixed capital cost is $46 million.

Most Japanese copper smelters are located in areas of concentrated industrial activity and high levels of atmospheric pollution. A review of unofficial sulfur dioxide emission control data from major Japanese smelters shows capture of 91 to 99.7 percent of the sulfur in the smelter feed. The bulk of Japanese smel ting capacity was constructed in the last 10 years. Six of the major sme lters use flash furnaces, and two use reverberatory furnaces. A prototype three-furnace continuous system is in use as a parallel train with reverberatory furnaces at one smelter. Most of the sulfur dioxide is manufactured into sulfuric acid. The remainder is captured by gas scrubbers that yield gypsum and sodium salts. Ready markets exist in Japan for the acid and other su lfur byproduc ts.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the plan used to instrument two longwall gateroads at the Powhatan No. 4 Mine of the Quarto Mining Co. Vibrating wire stressmeters, flat jack U-cells, multipoint extensometer stations, and convergence stations were installed in or on the coal pillars, roof bolts, and roof strata of the gateroad entries. The instruments measure pillar stresses, bolt loadings, and strata movements as the gateroad entries are developed and the longwall panel(s) is mined. The report details only the instrumentation plan of the longwall gateroads and not the evaluation of any subsequent data. This is because a complete analy-sis of the data cannot be made until extraction of the longwall panel(s) is complete.

An essentially chemical technique has been developed on a small scale for the efficient utilization of certain domestic titaniferous iron ores. Three main steps are involved: (1) Sintering the ore at 1,050° C. with carbon and soda ash to reduce the iron to metal powder, retaining the titania in the slag, (2) separating the powdered iron from the slag, after wet grinding, by magnetic or gravity methods, and (3) sulfuric-acid decomposition of the titania fraction to produce pigment and certain byproducts. The technique was first applied to the tailings from the Bureau of Mines bauxite-concentrating plant at Bauxite, Ark. A good grade of powdered iron was produced from this material. Subsequently, the work was diverted to the study of the titaniferous magnetite from the MacIntyre Mine at Tahawus, N.Y., because of the potentially higher recoveries of iron, titanium and vanadium. Ninety percent of the iron in this ore has been recovered as an iron powder analyzing 90 percent metallic iron and containing 2 to 3 percent TiO2. The remaining titania was found in the slag and was recovered as pigment-grade TiO2 by application of a suitable technique. The vanadium was distributed between the TiO2 fraction and the alkaline liquor resulting from the wet-grinding and magnetic-separation operations, with only a minor proportion retained by the metallic iron.

"The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are compounds which can be isolated from plants and which exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities. Perhaps the best known alkaloid of this group is tetrandrine (TT), a compound isolated from the root of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Stephania tetrandra. It has been tested for its effects on the cardiovascular system, tumors, and the lungs. For example, tetrandrine has been shown to act as a calcium entry blocker in cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles (King et a/., 1988) and has been used in China as a treatment for angina and hypertension. Its possible effects as a tumor-inhibitory substance have also been investigated (Kupchan and Atland, 1973). In addition, there are several lines of evidence to suggest that it is a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of silicosis. Yu et a/. (1983) have shown that TT inhibits the development of experimental silicosis in rats when it is administered orally after intratracheal instillation of quartz. Other studies have shown that the alkaloid inhibits the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of silicotic nodules in rats exposed to silica (Huang et al., 1981; Liu et al., 1983). In fact, tetrandrine has been used clinically in China as an antifibrotic agent and has been shown to improve both the appearance of chest radiographs and the measurements of diffusing capacity in patients with silicosis (Li et al., 1981).Since tetrandrine may have a potential use as a therapeutic agent for fibrotic lung diseases, its effects on various pulmonary cells and tissues should be studied. Alveolar type II cells are located in the alveolar regions of the lungs and are important because they are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant (Dobbs et al., 1982; King, 1984), regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury (Kauffman et al., 1974), and metabolism of foreign compounds (Bend et al., 1985). Furthermore, in silicosis, for which TT has been suggested as a treatment, there are increased amounts of pulmonary surfactant produced (Dethloff et al., 1986a,b) as a result of increased rates of surfactant synthesis by type II cells (Dethloff et a/., 1989; Miller et al., 1988). Because type II cells play a critical role in maintaining normal lung function and because type II cells are affected in silicosis, for which 'TT has been used as a treatment, we studied the effects of tetrandrine on energy metabolism in these cells in vitro. Energy metabolism was chosen because it is a basic cellular function which is neces-sary for other cellular processes to occur. Since type II cells depend on mitochondrial metabolism for energy production (Fisher et al., 1980), we examined the effects of tetrandrine on cellular and mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. Additional experiments were performed in an effort to determine if intracellular calcium levels may be involved in the TT-induced effects. A preliminary report of those results has appeared previously (Ma et al., 1991)."

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. During investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States in the early 1940?s, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven claims and mines in southern Arizona. For convenience in reporting the results, the work on the properties is grouped in three districts. As the ores were too low grade to be acceptable to producers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The San Fernando group is about 10.5 miles south of Patagonia in the Harshaw mining district. G. T. Humphries and D. Alonso held an option on the property, which was owned by H. Bender. Two samples were taken; 1 was a picked sample and the other a representative sample of ore as exposed in the mine.

The content of the book covers: (1) The theory of the Eötvös torsion balance; derivation of the working formulas; description of the instrument; method of observation; relation of the magnitudes observed to the lines of force and the level surfaces of gravity; corrections or normal effects, near and distance terrane; subterranean effects; effects due to certain mathematical bodies. (2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.
