This report presents computer instructions for calculating the performance of three-phase flow of gas, oil, and water. The calculated results for an illustrative example are presented. The example is the waterflood of a reservoir containing free gas in the reservoir as a result of the partial depletion of the oil by the expansion of the gas initially in solution. The flood pattern for the example is a 5-spot.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by halt townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 halt-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The Descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. Concern over possible wartime shortages finally resulted in passage of the Strategic Materials Act in 1939. As authorized by one section of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines proceeded to investigate deposits of seven strategic minerals with the objective of developing tonnages of low-grade material that could be mined in an emergency. During the war, the size of the program and the number of strategic minerals were increased, and the objective was the more immediate one of aiding production. Since the war, the size of the program has been reduced, but the number of minerals on the strategic list continues to be large. The objective has returned to that of 1939. In the course of the program, more than 10,000 examinations were made and about 1,300 projects were run on deposits of 33 different commodities. A considerable contribution to war production was made in six of the commodities investigated, and a minor contribution was made in twelve others. Substantial reserves have been indicated in 19 minerals. Private interest is currently active in some of the deposits developed in 14 commodities.

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.

The function of the Metallurgical Division is to conduct investigations relating to the treatment of mineral products from the state in which they are mined to the refined metal or other unfabricated product. These investigations include scientific and practical studies of ore dressing, covering the crushing and grinding of ores, separation by gravity, flotation. and magnetic methods; the hydrometallurgical treatment of ores, including cyanidation and amalgamation of the precious metals; the smelting and refining of copper, lead, and zinc, as well as the rare metals; and steel-melting practices from the raw ore to the finished steel. The object of this work is to conserve natural resources and eliminate waste by furnishing information on current methods of metallurgical practice. making fundamental studies of metallurgical processes, and developing new processes to the point of demonstrating their practicability. The Division is made up of sections devoted to the several phases of this work, each section being headed by an investigator capable of supervising his particular work. The work is carried on at the experiment stations and field offices or in the field, whichever seems best suited for the work in hand. The following, projects should be mentioned as particularly outstanding among those consummated successfully during the year: 1. Application of the type of chemicals known in the textile industry as wetting-out agents to flotation and agglomeration of ores, particulary soluble salts such as sodium and potassium chloride which must be treated in saturated brine. 2. Demonstration or a linear relation between surface and coercive force in magnetic minerals and Its application to magnetic separation and to the determination of grinding efficiencies and other metallurgical data which require surface determination at very fine sizes. 3. Pilot-plant demonstration of the practicability of the reduction of iron ore by natural gas and conversion of this direct iron into steel by direct melting and by forging and rolling before melting. The structure and properties of the iron so produced were studied in detail. This report covers the fiscal year July 1. 1934, to June 30, 1935.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a cost estimate of the Bayer process, which is used for virtually all cell-grade alumina production. The report will serve as a reference point to determine the economic merits of processes that have evolved from Bureau of Mines investigations on technology for producing alumina from domestic nonbauxitic raw materials. The Bayer process involves dissolving the alumina present in bauxite in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure. After the un- dissolved impurities are removed, the solution is seeded to produce an alumina trihydrate precipitate. This precipitate is filtered, washed, and calcined to produce the cell-grade alumina product. This cost estimate is for a plant producing 1 million tons of alumina per year. The estimated operating cost is approximately $250 per ton of alumina.

Haulage accidents in the anthracite region cause fewer fatal and lost-time accidents per million man-hours than similar accidents in bituminous mines, a fact that may be accounted for in several ways, but primarily because haulage, in a large part of the region, is restricted to haulage crews operating only on the gangways where most of the miners seldom come in contact with movement or handling of cars and locomotives. Generally in underground mines the number of men injured compared with the number killed is greater for haulage than for roof-fall accidents, while the number of men killed by haulage is second only to the number killed by roof falls.

The production of coal from underground mines in Washington declined during the recent war owing to shortage of manpower, and coal was shipped to the Pacific Northwest from mines in the Rocky Mountain region. The movement of this coal into Washington required the use of railroad equipment that otherwise could have been used for transporting war materiel and personnel. Strip mining uses a minimum of manpower, and the development of coal areas in the Pacific Northwest that can be mined by the strip method should increase production in the area, thus releasing railroad equipment from the necessity of transporting coal long distances and also providing consumers with a lower-cost product. The development of a strip mine to supply the demand at low cost requires a large investment in heavy equipment. In order that the fixed charges due to large investment in plant and equipment may be kept at a minimum, large reserves of coal must be proved. A reconnaissance of an area near Toledo, Lewis County, Wash., indicated a large bed of lignite that could be mined by strip methods. The area is approximately midway between Portland, Oreg., and Tacoma, Wash. (refer to fig. 1), and the opening of a large mine in the area would supply fuel to these and other nearby centers.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system using a high-speed electropneumatic mechanism for the rapid (grab) sampling of dusts and gases during an explosion. The sampling system consists of an aluminum housing that incorporates two 30-cm3 preevacuated glass vials with rubber septums. Upon actuation, the sampling probe needle is driven through the septum with a pressurized air pulse, filling the tube with gas and dust from the mine explosion. After a predetermined time, the sampling probe needle is retracted by a second high-pressure air pulse to its normal (quiescent) state, allowing the sampling tube to reseal. The onset and the duration of sampling are independently variable and controlled by a time-delay relay package. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis-charring in coal particles and the generation and combustion of the pyrolysis vapors in both large- and small- scale explosions. The following results were obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory: (1) Gas sampling of the leading edge of the flame front shows the large concentration changes, characteristic of the flame front; (2) gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen; and (3) the particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring.

The effectiveness of 0.01 pct. molybdenum, as ammonium molybdate impregnated on coal, on the hydrogenation of a high-volatile bituminous C coal at 8,000 p.s.i.g. and 460° to 480° C. has been studied in a pilot plant by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Under these conditions, the Bureau obtained 98 to 99 pct. conversion5/ of coal to liquids and gases at throughputs of 29 to 101 lb. of m.a.f. coal per cubic foot of reaction space per hour. At 460° C. the indicated yield of oil ranged from 63 pct. (based on m.a.f. coal) at a throughput of 35 lb./c.f.h. (pounds per cubic foot per hour) to 68.5 pct. at a throughput of 58 lb./c.f.h., and the yield of gaseous hydro-carbons ranged from 25.5 to 19 pct. at the same throughputs. The maximum measured yield of oil boiling under 325° C. was 47 pct.

"Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. Knickerbocker; chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

The Bureau of Mines laboratory tested the response of a commercially available real-time aerosol monitor (GCA RAM-1) to various dusts. Monitor measurements were recorded, averaged, and compared with simultaneous gravimtric measurements of each test dust. Tests usually lasted several hours. The test dusts of various particle size distributions used included coal, limestone, and a commercially available test dust. For each particular dust, the monitor response was linear and correlated well with mass concentration over the range of about 0.5 to 10 mg/m3. The monitor can estimate a 2.0-/m3 respirable coal dust concentration within as little as 26 pct with 95 pct confidence. The monitor must, however, be calibrated with the dust to be measured because the instrument response is affected by the type of dust particle. The average monitor response to same mass concentration of coal dust was approximately twice the average monitor response to the same mass concentration of limestone dust.

This report describes research directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen (02) sources which exhibited improved 02 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(02)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. The Ca(02)2) was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x-ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(02)2 synthesis process were studied. Next, the reactivity of Ca(02)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (C02) was evaluated and was compare o that of K02 under flow-test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of K02 and Ca(02)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, K02-based, self-contained self-rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(02)2 or a mixture of K02 and Ca(02)2 were used as a replacement for K02.

The purpose of this study was to assess the various aspects of public safety related to the thousands of abandoned or inactive underground mines found throughout Western Colorado. Review of available published mine inventories yielded data on over 8,000 abandoned underground mines. A random sample of 200 mines was then selected for field visits representative of mining activity in Colorado. Inspections of the openings at two hundred abandoned underground mines were performed recording descriptive information regarding the opening, the mine site, the surrounding area, the primary opening hazard, secondary hazards related to structures or dumps, other openings to the same mi ne, available construction materials, possible safeguard methods, and any special observations such as apparent activity, previous closure attempts, environmental constraints on construction, and access problems. Of the 200 mines visited, twenty mine openings representative of varying geologic, environ-mental, access, and mining conditions were selected for detailed low-cost safeguard application. Description of these safeguards is presented in narrative, itemized labor-materials equipment tabulations, and illustrations. Research into the regulations of mine closure and safeguards was also undertaken to determine jurisdiction of public lands. Recommendations were suggested to improve the awareness and ability to continue this program into an implementation stage.

The XVIth International Conference on Coal Mine Safety Research was divided into eight half-day technical sessions. In accord with the established practice of these conferences, at each session, presentation of the papers was followed by a discussion period. Questions and comments submitted in writing to the session chairman were answered or discussed by the authors of the relevant papers or by their representatives. These discussions were tape-recorded in the original language of the speaker and subsequently translated into English when necessary. Questions to which no answer was available at the time and a few comments that exceeded the scope of the session have been omitted.

"INTRODUCTION Electrolytic manganese is produced by electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell, metallic manganoese being deposited on the cathodes and sulfuric acid produced at the anodes. The spent electrolyte is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been subjected to a reducing roast; the resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.The leach liquor produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant 3/ at Boulder City, Nev., contains 135 to 140 grams of ammonium sulfate and 32 to 36 grams of manganese (as sulfate) per liter, and has a pH of about 2.5. After neutralization to a pH of 6.4 to 6.6 with ammonia and thickening, 0.10 to 0.15 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter is added to the liquor to precipitate the heavy metals, and after 15 to 30 minutes the precipitate is filtered off. Residual sulfides and colloidal material are removed by ferric hydroxide formed by adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the solution at a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 and passing air through it. The solution is then filtered and clarified as a precoat filter. Finally, 0.1 gram of sulfur dioxide per liter is added, and the solution is electrolyzed in an anode-in-diaphragm cell. The spent electrolyte coming from the cell contains approximately 10 grams manganese, 135 grams ammonium sulfate, and 45 grams sulfuric acid per liter."

[The purpose of this paper is to acquaint manufacturers of various types of asbestos product's, particularly those that specialize in materials used for sound deadening, vibration damping, and filtration, with a recently invested depth deposit of paligorskite, a type of asbestos usually called mountain leather. In the past this mineral has been only a museum curiosity but it possesses characteristics that may adapt it to industrial uses. The deposit is on Lemesurier Island, near this entrance to Glacier Bay, in the northern portion of southeastern Alaska, at approximately latitude 58° 17? N., longitude 1360 05' W. The island is about 4 ½ miles in east- west length and miles in width. The property on which the deposit occurs is owned by the locator Joe Ibach, end it was brought; to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Col. George B. Norris. A Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the owner and Chris Ellingen, visited the property sand examined the open-cuts from May 7 to 10 in 1944. The purpose of the examination was to determine the approximate extent of the occurrence and to obtain samples of the material for identification end study of its utilization.]

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to provide technical information needed to devise waste management plans for the processing of manganese nodules. Studies included summary descriptions of Pacific manganese nodules, process options and flowsheets, methods for characterizing nodules and their tailings, and results of analyses of laboratory and pilot-plant generated tailings. This information is the result of a cooperative research effort of the Bureau of Mines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with NOAA providing funding and the Bureau conducting the research. A summary of the extensive literature review is provided for manganese nodule mineralogy, chemistry, processing techniques, and methods of analyses. Characterizations and analyses of laboratory-generated tailings and slags are given, as well as the results of the leaching studies on these waste materials. Leachability was determined by three standard leachate tests- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-EPA seawater elutriant test. While the wastes generated in the laboratory may not be entirely representative of those to be generated in full-scale plants, results of these studies provide a positive indication that commercial recovery of cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel from manganese nodules would be environmentally acceptable.
