Experimental determinations were made of vapor-liquid equilibria data for a helium-nitrogen-methane system. A mixture composition was chosen to approximate the crude helium to be produced Or conservation that will eventually be further refined to obtain pure helium. Although there are publications of studies of the vapor-liquid equilibria of helium-nitrogen, helium-methane, and nitrogen-methane binary systems, there is little indication of work done on the ternary system of helium-nitrogen-methane. The experimental data presented in this report supplement the information available for the binary systems. The equilibrium vapor-liquid data and equilibrium vaporization coefficients are presented in tabular form. Graphs are employed to show an extensive amount of the data.

The Copper Canyon lead-zinc mine is in the Battle Mountain. District, Lander County, Nev. It was discovered in 1866 and mined for copper until 1935 and for copper and gold until l948, when the main production became lead-zinc ore. The rocks in the area are carboniferous (Pennsylvanian and Mississippian) sedimentaries that have been intruded by quartz monzonite of Mesozoic age. They have been intensely folded, faulted, and tilted. Lead-zinc ore occurs as sulfides disseminated along fractured zones in a conglomerate arid hornfels. Development was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, making maps and. cross sections, and exploring the deposit by diamond drilling from underground. Eighteen holes were drilled, for a total of 2,594 feet. This report contains a brief history of the property and a description of mining methods and beneficiation of the ore, geology, ore deposits and drilling done by the Bureau of Mines. It also contains detailed analyses of the ore samples taken and logs of the holes drilled.

ESTATE IN MINERALS. Minerals beneath the surface may be made the subject of separate ownership either by a grant of the minerals by the owner of the land or by a grant of the land excepting the minerals, and thereby an estate in fee simple is created in the minerals, as corporeal things real. Colby, In re, Iowa, 169 Northwestern 443, p. 444. DEEDS EXCHANGING DIFFERENT MINERALS-RIGHTS OF PARTIES. The lands of two adjoining owners were underlaid with cement rock and clay at a depth of about 100 feet from the surface and with coal veins some 600 feet below the surface. By an exchange of deeds one of the land owners conveyed to the other the cement rock and clay with the right to mine and remove the same without entering upon the surface, but the deed contained no covenant not to injure the surface. The other deed conveyed the coal seam and so much of the rock and other minerals just above and below the coal as might be required in connection with the mining and removing of the coal, together with the right to mine and remove the same, and the adja- cent rock, clay, and other minerals, without entering upon or injuring the surface, with one immaterial exception. The deeds do not define the word "surface" and neither expressly nor by implication did they secure to the coal owner the right to subside the overlying cement rock; but the implication is to the contrary, as the deed gives the right to mine and remove coal without entering upon or injuring the surface. The provision that the coal owner should not enter upon or injure the surface amounts to a clause that the coal mine. shall not be worked so as to let down the surface and this does not create any inconsistency with the provision giving the right to mine and carry away the coal.

A literature search and survey were prepared on the technology of surface hydraulic mining, with particular reference to its possible use in the United States forstripping overburden from surface coal mines. Extensive use was made of Russian references which were translated into English. The advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic mining and hydrotransport are identified as well as criteria for selecting potential applications. At present, the major U.S. application is in the phosphate industry of Florida and North Carolina. Potential locations for hydraulic stripping of overburden from coal seams are identified in the states of Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Other potential applications include the hydraulic mining of peat in Minnesota, and the stripping of overburden from lignite in Texas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Further research is recommended, particularly on the subject of dewatering of fine clay slimes to avoid water pollution and to permit rapid reclamation of mined areas.

This circular outlines salient facts regarding the pyrites industry of the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The United States Bureau of Mines has in its files additional and more detailed data upon many of the subjects presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and the public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contribu- tions of data that may assist in making later editions of this circular of information more accurate, or may aid in developing more fully the files pertaining to pyrites.

Spectrochemical methods were developed to determine beryllium in the concentration range 0.0015 to 4.0 percent in siliceous mineral beneficiation products. Two methods are described. They are (1) a fusion-pellet-spark procedure (spark method) and (2) a sustaining alternating-current arc procedure (arc method). In the spark method the sample is fused with lithium tetra-borate and vanadium pentoxide. The resulting bead is crushed, mixed with powdered graphite, and briquetted. This is analyzed spectrographically using controlled high-voltage spark excitation. In the arc method the sample is diluted with germanium metal, graphite, and vanadium pentoxide. Weighed charges are packed into cupped graphite electrodes and subjected to excitation with a sustaining alternating-current arc. Vanadium serves as internal standard for both methods. Effects due to matrix variations in samples and standards are eliminated either by fusion with lithium tetraborate in the spark method or by dilution with germanium and graphite in the arc method. Beryllium determinations show deviations from accepted chemical values of approximately 5 and 8 percent for the spark and arc methods, respectively. Analyses can be made more rapidly by the arc procedure with a sacrifice in precision and accuracy. Either method can be applied to the determination of beryllium in silicate rocks.

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. An economic evaluation was made of the Bureau of Mines incinerator residue separation process to update the one published in 1971 to a mid-1.974 cost basis. This evaluation includes a modification of the glass-recovery operation used In the original plant design as well as a unit to bale the ferrous scrap product before shipment. Products from the plant are ferrous metal, aluminum and copper-zinc scrap, and a mixed-color glass cullet. The estimated capital and operating costs for four plant sizes are as follows : [ ] The operating costs do not include credits for recovered metals and glass.

"SUMMARYFollowing a magnetometer survey on the McCoy iron deposit, a trenching and drilling program was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in August 1944.This deposit is 32.3 miles southwest of Battle Mountain in the McCoy Mining District, Lander County, Nevada, and lies on the east flank of the Fish Creek Mountains at an altitude of 5,400 feet, about 1 1/2 miles south of the gold camp of McCoy.Total production from the deposit has been 400 tons of magnetite, mined by hand and shipped to the west coast for ship's ballast.Bureau drilled two holes to a total depth of 92 feet and excavated 12 feet of trenches. Both holes were drilled in the same ore body and engineered magnetite ore 14 and 11 feet thick. Trenching was used successfully to show the lateral limits of the ore.Magnetite ore bodies were found to occur as replacements of a limestone bed in quartzite. They outcrop near and parallel to the exposure of a diorite entrusting that forms a long westward-trending ridge. Although magnetic outcrops can be traced for 5,000 feet trenching definitely proved the ore bodies to be disconnected to have little or no lateral extent beyond their outcrops. Only two ore bodies more than 10 feet thick were found; one of these is the inaccessible to and the other was drilled by the Bureau."

Whiting or Paris white is a fine-grained preparation of calcium carbonate having a wide variety of uses. Until recent years it was prepared almost exclusively from certain north European chalks. With the curtailment of imports of European chalk during the World War of 1914-18, however, finely ground limestone, of domestic origin was used more extensively to satisfy the American demand.

This report is the result of the engineering efforts performed by the Mining Equipment Operations of FMC to develop methods of automating a continuous miner. This work was done as part of modification number three of the contract for the development of a miner/bolter system. As the demand for energy places an ever-increasing pressure on the coal mining industry to produce more coal, methods for underground mining which will increase productivity with a con-current increase in safety are being actively sought. Removing the machine operator from his station on the continuous miner and placing him at a safer location behind the machine while retaining his control functions via an umbilical cable or a radio link was an important first step. However, the problems of poor visibility, no control "feel", and the judgmental problems of controlling the sump distance and the shear limits have not been conducive to the productivity increase that is desired.

Previous work.-The general plan of work outlined for the Government fuel-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, included investigations relative to the briquetting of coals found in the United States. These investigations embraced the possibility of making satisfactory commercial fuels from lignite or low-grade coals which do not stand shipment well; of benefiting culm or slack coals that are wasted or sold at unremunerative prices; and of improving the furnace efficiency or ability to withstand transportation of good coals. This work was begun in 1904 and was continued in 1905, 1906, and 1907 as an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of methods for reducing waste and increasing efficiency in the utilization of the fuel resources in the United States. The initial briquetting tests at St. Louis, which included examination into the behavior of different coals or mixtures of coals in the briquetting press, experimental study of the merits of various substances used as binders, and consideration of the physical properties and resistance to weather and abrasion of the briquets, have been described.a They demonstrated that satisfactory briquets could be made from most coals, and that by briquetting the commercial value of many low-grade coals and lignites could be raised enough to more than cover the cost of manufacture. Norfolk plant.-The briquetting plant of the Geological Survey was moved from St. Louis, Mo., to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, along with the steam boiler and producer-gas equipment of the fuel-testing plant, as the closing out of the affairs of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the consequent removal of the buildings from Forest Park made a change of location necessary. Norfolk was selected largely with a view to the testing of coals for naval purposes, and because of facilities in the way of buildings and materials offered by the Jamestown Exposition Company. The work at Norfolk was chiefly devoted to making steaming and briquet tests of coals which reach the Atlantic seaboard at Norfolk and Newport News and are used by the navy and merchant marine. Two briquet machines were installed at the Norfolk plant, one being the English machine used in briquetting tests by the Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1905 and 1906, and the other an American machine. The briquets made at this plant were tested on locomotives of several railroads entering Norfolk and on the United States torpedo boat Buldle in comparison with the run-of-mine coal used in making them. Some of the tests were conducted by the railroads on their own locomotives, but those on the Biddle and on the locomotive of the Seaboard Air Line Railway were carried on by W. T. Ray and Henry Kreisinger, of the United States Geological Survey. Personnel.-Charles T. Malcolmson continued in general charge of the briquetting section after the removal to Norfolk until January 1, 1908. Walter J. Chapman continued in charge of operation of the briquet machines and of the observations reported under the heading "Details of manufacture." Charles L. Wright supervised the installation of the English briquet machine and later in the year continued the physical tests of briquets and the analyses in the chemical laboratory of the section until January 1, 1908, on which date he was placed in general charge of the work of the section. G. E. Ryder and Ralph Galt also continued with the staff, but the former was obliged to resign soon after the plant was in operation on account of ill health; the latter continued with the section as computer until the close of work on December 1, 1908.

This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for the Philippines for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J01225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) eimber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and balsting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

The Tri-State zinc-lead catalog, compilation of which was initiated by the Bureau of Mines in August 1949, is designed to provide a continuing record of avail-able drill-hole logs and maps of mine developments in the zinc-lead district in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and northeastern Oklahoma. The maps and data thus preserved constitute a reservoir of factual information readily available to individuals and firms interested in planning mineral explorations, to Government agencies for formulating estimates or ore reserves, and to the mining industry in the district for general uses. The areas to be included in the catalog embrace the explored and mined tracts within 760,000 acres of the more active western part of the district. The consensus among local mine operators, geologists, and mining engineers is that over 100,000 boles, costing more than $30,000,000, have been drilled in the district. Records of some of the early drilling and mine developments are destroyed or lost, but the Bureau of Mines has copies of about 47,500 drill-hole logs and is accumulating and recording on microfilm those that are currently available. As of May 1, 1954, the logs of approximately 28,000 drill holes had been microfilmed and are available for inspection at the Bureau of Mines office, Joplin, Mo.

A study of the composition of the corresponding fractions of a primary and a high- temperature tar was undertaken to throw light on the net results of the pyrolysis of the primary products of coal decomposition in high-temperature coking practice, with reference both to total quantities of the chemically similar constituents and to their distribution throughout the boiling range. No exactly parallel investigations are on record. The distribution of substances in high-temperature tars, however, is fairly well understood. Such tars are more or less similar, for they consist of the more stable phenols, aromatic and olefinic compounds resulting from the pyrolytic decomposition of a wide variety of primary tar constituents. For example, from a typical distillation curve for high-temperature tar phenols4 it may be seen that the greatest portion of the phenols distills between 180° and 220° C., a fairly narrow range.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. Sand and gravel mines were the largest mining sector, comprising 48.2% of all mining operations. ? Sand and gravel mines were found throughout all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

Major producers posted 25¢-per-pound increases on cadmium, raising their domestic quotes to $2.75 per pound. COBALT: Cobalt consumption in February, exclusive of salts and driers, increased by 21 percent compared with consumption in January. Significant increases in consumption occurred in cutting and wear resistant materials, welding and alloy hard-facing rods and materials, magnetic alloys, and other alloys. The major sales agency for cobalt in New York reportedly announced price increases, effective April 15, 1976, for cobalt metal, powders, and oxide. The new price for 250 kilo (551 lb.) drums of cobalt metal (granules or electrolytic cathodes), f.o.b. Port of New York, was quoted at $4.40 per pound. This is the first cobalt price increase since January 23, 1975, and is the result of a price increase by Sozacom, the official Zairian sales agent. Other cobalt producers are expected to raise their prices in line with the new quote.

"The Stoddard mine, Cheshire County, N. H., was explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1944 as a source of the strategic fluorite. It was reported that the vein persisted in the bottom of old workings and the geology of the immediate area indicated the possibility of finding additional lenses.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts pre¬liminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is expressed for the cooperation and assistance given by Robert F. Sherwood of the United Feldspar & Minerals Corp.; by McHenry Mosier, chief, College Park Division, Mining Branch, who aided in re¬vising this report; and by J. B. Zadra, chief, College Park Division, Metallurgical Branch, and others of his staff, who assisted in performing the beneficiation tests and analyzing samples. A dirt road in fair condition suitable for truck leads to the nine.Dwight H. Smith, Putney, Vt., is the owner and has leased the property to the United Feldspar & Minerals Corp., 10 East 40th Street, New York 16, N. Y.Property titles were not investigated.The fluorite deposits of Cheshire Count', H. H., have been known for many years, being reported by Jackson, (Geology and Mineralogy of New Hampshire, by Charles T, Jackson, 1844) and by Hitchcock, in1878 (Geology of Now Hampshire, vol. 3, 1878, by Charles H. Hitchcock). A large pit on the largest or east vein was mined by Lovat Frazer from about 1908 to 1917, This operation is reported to have produced approximately 3,500 tons of fluorspar. In 1917, the American Steel & Wire Co, took over the mine end is said to have produced 3,500 tons of fluorspar before relinquishing the lease in 1923.From 1935 to 1937 the New Hampshire Fluorspar Cc. operated the Stoddard mine, working chiefly on the most westerly of the three known veins on the property, as well as doing some preliminary work on the small central vein. In 1938, the United Feldspar 6 Minerals Corp. leased the mine, and less than 100 tons of fluorspar was produced from exploration and development work, No mining has been done since that time."
