"IntroductionThis paper is the seventh of a series describing an investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on underground communication. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

THE BARRIER-PILLAR SYSTEM in the Lackawanna Basin consists of 93 barrier pillars between Archbald and Taylor, Pa. These pillars affect 48 mines, have a total length of 87 miles, and confine 21 underground pools, which contain more than 10 billion gallons of water. From an investigation of size, position, and condition of the barrier pillars, it is apparent that those concerned are uncertain, not only as to the method by which the sizes of the barrier pillars were determined but also as to the stability of those that may be expected to act as dams. Where a barrier pillar must act as a dam, its failure may result in loss of life, the mine, or both; it would be far better had it not existed and thereby given a false sense of security.

A stronger U.S. economy stimulated the domestic mineral sector in 1994. Metals demand was spurred by robust U.S. motor vehicle sales, while demand for major industrial minerals rose in response to highway and building construction. Domestic mineral and material demand is expected to increase in 1995, particularly if interest rates do not restrain the building industry and international monetary exchange rates remain advantageous to U.S. automobile manufacturers. Additional information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance Processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1994 increased to an estimated value of $360 billion. Domestic output of raw nonfuel minerals in 1994 was estimated at $34 billion, about 6% more than that of 1993. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 29 of the last 34 years.

This research program was conducted to determine if respirable coal dust emanating from a continuous mining machine can be suppressed more effectively by a high expansion foam than by the water sprays conventionally used. A high expansion foam system was developed and tested on a continuous mining machine under actual operating conditions. The utility of the system was demonstrated. Test results tend to show that foam application is more effective than water sprays in suppressing respirable coal dust. However, because of the extreme variability of the test conditions, scatter in the sampling data, and other factors, not enough data was obtained to form a firm conclusion that foam is more efficient than a water spray in suppressing respirable coal dust. Sufficient statistical data was obtained, however, to indicate that foam is more efficient than water in suppressing total float coal dust.

Protective canopies for conventional electric face equipment, including shuttle cars, operating in low coal (less than 48 inches) were designed, fabricated, installed and evaluated on in-mine machines engaged in regular coal mining operations. This work was performed under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center. The canopies will support a vertical load of 18,000 pounds and provide protection against both roof falls and contact with the mine rib. Canopy configurations were established based on human engineering studies, full scale canopy mockups, and in-mine observation and consultation with mine and equipment manufacturing personnel. Overall height of each canopy is hydraulically adjustable between a minimum of 32 inches and a maximum of 40 inches. Canopy tops are open framework, welded structures, covered with expanded metal mesh. Structural members are 1 3/4-inch or 2-inch square tubing of AISI 413ON and ASTM A500 material, respectively. The canopy tops are typically supported by an understructure and upright post arrangement that is either integrated into the current operator platform or attached to the machine frame. The four upright corner posts house the hydraulic actuators. Canopy tops are elevated horizontally. Canopies are welded or bolted to the existing machines. Installation is accomplished with a minimal amount of interface modifications. No major machine design changes are required. Canopies were trial installed and load tested at the manufacturer's facility prior to installation on the in-mine machines. Canopies were installed on a Joy 14BU10 Loader, 16RB-3AH Cutter, and two 21SC Shuttle Cars, and a Galis 300 Roof Drill and 460-S Face Drill. Canopy installations were evaluated in the Jewell Ridge Coal Company No. 12 and Big Creek Tiller Mines. Operational time accumulated on the installations during evaluation ranged from 1 week to 14 weeks of two-shift operation. All five canopy designs, manufacture, and test were successfully accomplished. The five canopies met all safety requirements. Three of the five canopies were deemed to be completely successful from an operator's point of view. That is, mine management as well as the machine operator found that the canopies did not impede the operation of the machines to function with the same efficiency as before the installation of the canopies. The loader canopy, in fact, appeared to have provided a mole efficient operation of the loader by providing added safety to the operator from rib contact thus allowing him to concentrate more fully on the loading function. Operational problems were encountered with the shuttle car and the roof drill. The shuttle car canopy obstructed visibility to an objectionable amount and the roof drill canopy impeded maneuverability of the machine, more than doubling the roof bolting time.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heat¬ing value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions./ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made.Analyses of the delivered coal and ""tipple"" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.The Government purchased approximately 5-1/2 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1951. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 10,700 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications s been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications contain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. This report is a summary of the work performed for the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the feasibility and desirability of a movable in-pit crusher combined with conveyors to substantially reduce or eliminate truck or train haulage in large open-pit non-fuel mineral mines. The report includes an introduction and summary of previous work, an analysis of movable crusher system components, a description of the selected system, a review of possible movable crusher system applications, and finally requirements for future work to bring about the general availability of such systems. It was clear from the program that there is a real need for movable in-pit crushers.

The Rapidex continuous spiral blast tunneling concept uses a spiral blast pattern that provides efficient slabbing action, continuous progression, and partial self-shielding. A lightly shielded tunneling machine using this concept stays at the face to provide continuous drill, load, shoot, and muck functions. Previous phases proved the effectiveness of the blast pattern in the White Pine Shale tested the design features of the shield and developed a remote loading and shooting capability using inductively initiated blasting caps and a pumpable slurry explosive. Phase IV assembled previously used front-end elements (drill, loading components, shield) on a used Joy loader chassis and added a mucking system television monitoring and remote control elements. Remote television monitored loading shooting and mucking were investigated. Difficulty was experienced in locating previously drilled blastholes near the bottom of the heading and even on the face. These holes often had to be considered as lost. Because of hydraulic system deficiencies and overall congestion of machine elements at the face mucking rates obtainable with remote television monitoring were low (on the order of 16 tons per hour). Performance was good enough to indicate improved rates if more space were available and if extreme thoroughness were not required. Because of the serious nature of the lost hole problem, a new explosive loading scheme was given a preliminary evaluation. The new scheme would require the explosive and the detonating charge to be loaded through the drill steel. If the necessary equipment modifications could he made and if safe, efficient operation were assured, the new scheme would alleviate some of the crowding at the face and would eliminate the lost hole problem.

Boron compounds have been considered for many years as possible additions to iron and steel. A very recent use of boron-steel rods was for the control of neutron intensity in the graphite-uranium pile at the Clinton plutonium plant(130).4/ Norris(129) reports that slags containing boric oxide reduce the ferrous oxide content of steels and thereby the aluminum required for deoxidation. Boron is not considered an alloying element, but minute amounts produce what is often called a "needled" steel. The study of a series of iron-boron alloys by convenient steps, starting with iron containing no boron, indicated that boron was a hardening agent and made the iron very difficult if not impossible to forge. Then came the discovery that very minute traces of boron are quite different from the smallest amount previously thought worthy of study.

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.

The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

This paper describing mining methods at, the Eighty-Five mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co., Valedon, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The Eighty-Five mine is in southwestern New Mexico, 3 miles southwest of Lordsburg, Hidalgo County (see fig. 1). The mine produces normally 7,000 to 8,000 tons per. month of silicious copper-gold-silver ore, and employs approximately 200 men underground and 40 on-the surface. Mining is done by shrinkage and cut-and-fill methods.

The first full year of the second World War for the United States presented a picture of the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry which, without proper analysis and explanation, would convey a distorted view of achievements during 1942, especially because employment at gold and silver (lode and placer) mines-the largest group-declined to such an extent that the over-all totals for the country were reduced even though increases were made at mines producing copper, lead-zinc, iron, miscellaneous metals, and non-metals. A complete panorama of the metal-and nonmetal-mining industry, exclusive of coal mining, reveals a decrease in the number of men employed, the man-hours of employment, and the accident-frequency rates. Were the gold and silver (lode and placer) mines to be considered as a separate category; it would be seen that the number of men employed at all the other groups of mines increased appreciably over 1941. These other increases must be considered important, since these mines produced the vital war minerals that made valuable contributions to the military successes of the United States and its Allies during the year. A separate analysis of each of the various groups of mines may be found elsewhere in this bulletin. For the purpose of maintaining continuity in this series of bulletins, however, the discussion in this introduction will be confined to the entire metal-and nonmetal-mining industry (excluding coal mining, for which a separate bulletin, No. 462, has been published).

This paper has been written to describe briefly the mining and milling of gold and silver ores in the Black Canyon and neighboring mining districts in Yavapai County, Ariz. The description of present operations is the result of a 10-day visit to the region by the writer in March 1936. "INTRODUCTION ""Free silica"" includes all free forms of silicon dioxide, such as quartz, chalcedony, tridymite, cristbbalite, opal, diatomaceous earth, and lechatelierite. The term, has been used rather loosely however, as synonymous with quartz, as quartz is the most abundant form of free silica. ""Combined silica,"" on the other hand, has been reserved to denote silica combined with other elements as silicates.Improvements in methods for the determination of free silica, and quartz in particular, have been the subject of considerable interest during the past decade, owing mainly to the accented and increased knowledge concerning quartz as a causative factor in silicosis. Analysis for quartz, however, is of importance in many other fields, including the determination of quartz in ceramic raw materials, such as feldspar and clay; the evaluation of a beneficiation procedure by the ore dresser, such as in the concentration of iron ore; control studies of a manufactured product, such as silica brick; and routine analysis of rock, mineral, and ore samples by chemists and petrographers."

In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Dak., were mapped and sampled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.
