Electronic detonators are increasingly being used in today’s blasting in quarries, seismic, surface and underground mines. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, field programmability and digital safety means. Because of the prerequisite electrical communications between the electronic detonators and the blasting machine, the layout or hook-up of these detonators can play an important role in obtaining the communication fidelity.

The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique. Certain blasting applications are more prone to the generation of significant levels of nitrogen dioxide post blast fumes, more commonly referred to as after blast smoke, generally ranging in color from dark yellow to bright red. This paper reviews basic background chemistry defining the observed fumes and attempts to correlate geology, blast design, and explosive composition effects on the level of nitrogen dioxide that can be observed in various blasting conditions. Additionally, a test setting for evaluating the generation of post blast fumes is presented with pertinent test data detailing generic explosive formulation modifications which effect the overall level of post detonation generation of nitrogen dioxide.

Combining action features of explosive shock with those of natural lignocellulosic biomass structure, we have successfully developed a new explosive shock dilatation and separation technique for pretreatment of natural lignocellulosic materials in the laboratory. Based on a brief introduction to the technical background and experimental procedure of this new method, some preliminary experimental results are given and discussed: the scanning electron microscope (SEM) qualitative observation results show that for treated natural lignocellulosic sample such as corn cob etc., their length of fibre bundle shortens, fibre bundle arrange disorders, biomass appearance and structure of samples largely change to be dilatation and loose state. The dilute acid hydrolysis quantitative measure results show that for treated samples, the overall yield of the reducing sugar largely increases, hydrolysis rate of corn cob sample is over 80%, rate and speed of hydrolysis are increased by times.

The rock blasting industry continues to be under pressure to reduce the level of vibration induced by the use of explosives. In recent years much research and development has been directed to minimizing vibration levels by controlling the delay period between blast holes. The most commonly applied technique is known as Linear Superposition. This technique takes the vibration produced from a single-hole test shot and simulates the vibration that would be produced from a full-scale production blast. The simulation can be run with various delay periods and the optimum delay chosen. The success of the Linear Superposition technique depends to a great extent on having accurate delay detonators and on the single-hole test shot reliably indicating the vibration signal produced from each hole in a production blast. A quarry-based case study is given illustrating how these assumptions are not always valid. In this case the use of electronic detonators has controlled frequency but not vibration level. The paper goes on to describe a series of single-hole test shots in an U.K. limestone quarry. The vibration 2 signals recorded are examined in terms of variations in free-face provision, blast geometry, explosive properties, etc.

This paper describes a very exacting tunneling project. Planning and technical realization of this service and transportation tunnel was especially difficult as a matter of vibration control, because the tunnel is situated only a few meters under Maria Hospital, which is one of the most busiest hospitals in Helsinki. In this hospital there are many departments for bedpatients, research and treatment with high-tech equipment, operational surgery and a big laboratory. Besides access tunnels are situated near several apartment buildings. The functionality of the tunnel required the placement of the access tunnels to be straight towards these apartment buildings for which special care for blast induced air pressure had to be taken.

Liquified petroleum gas mixed with oxygen has been used as a new type of mixed gas source for gas detonating system. The experimental studies have been done on the detonation feature of gas detonating transmission in a long and thin tube, the transmitting reliability for detonating network, the design on gas exploder and test devices. The results of the study show that (1 )Liquified petroleum mixed with oxygen can be used as a new type of regular gas source. (2)The transmission of detonating wave is reliable for new type of mixed gas in a 500-meter long plastic tube with 3mm inner diameter and the detonating velocity is up to 2500m/s. The detonating wave can surely initiate and transmit several branched gas detonating cap and explosive through the end of detonating network, the tubes inner diameter for the detonating quenching is 0. I’mm. (3)The gas exploder designed by authors can be used for gas propotional distribution,strong turbulence-mixing,initiating by reflex shock wave and safety control purposes. The developed double flowmeter can be used together or seperately in responsible for main testing in the system.

A thorough assessment of development drilling and blasting practice was carried out at two underground mines at INCO operations in Thompson, Manitoba. The study showed that significant improvement in productivity can be achieved through careful selection of explosives and loading practice, and modifications of the standard blast lay-out. The analysis involved assessment of the effectiveness of various perimeter blasting methods, employing selected explosives and loading practice in both jumbo and jack-leg rounds. The blasting pattern as well as burden and spacing were varied to determine their effect on the blast results. The various types of explosives used were, pneumatically loaded ANFO, with and without detonating cord tracing, extra-strength detonating cord, and slurry and emulsion explosives with and without cord tracing. The study also dealt with various means to achieve increased rate of advance in both jumbo and jack-leg rounds. The diagnostic measurements consisted of VOD, 'burn' marks or half-barrels on perimeter wall, and blasting vibrations. The effects of geology, firing sequence, blast lay-out, and drill hole deviation on the final results were also examined. The results of the study have been shown to have very important bearing on the design of development round blasting.

The better the capability of accurately predicting the results of any process the less laborious and costly is the optimization or improvement of that process. Rock blasting is a process that one intends to optimize for productivity and cost. Cast or throw blasting is a particular type of rock blasting which is widely used in surface coal mines, where draglines are used to remove the overburden from the top of the coal seam, in preparation for coal mining. Usually, the more rock that is thrown by the blast to the spoil side of the cut or pit, so that the dragline does not have to handle it, the more cost-effective is the cast blasting operation. As such, from an operating cost standpoint, it is crucial to better understand and predict the performance of cast blasting. The Distinct Motion Code or DMC is a Discrete Element Model which has been under development since 1987 and has been used to predict rock motion in several types of mining operations, particularly in surface coal and gold operations.

The VoD of non-ideal explosives depends on the charge diameter and the thickness, strength and sound velocity of the confiner. VoD measurements are made to evaluate explosives for development, quality control and prediction of field performance. In testing, the container is part of the explosive system and affects the measured VoD. Pipe testing in cardboard tubes delivers the best guide to unconfined critical diameter and minimum VoD range, but the thickness of the pipes affects the result close to critical diameter, even in emulsions. PVC pipes are not good for unconfined test work because they provide relatively strong confinement. Care must be taken to select pipes with constant relative pipe area across the range of diameters. Where pipes are used to evaluate the effect of confinement, the ratio of the wall thickness relative to the thickness of the detonation driving zone in the explosive needs to exceed 0.5 to create full confinement and the ratio of the detonation velocity to the confiner wave speed must be considered. Estimates for critical thicknesses are provided from Non-Ideal detonation models. The relationship between confinement modulus and VoD is discussed and indexes are suggested for quantifying the explosive performance.

Since World War II, the need for the use of explosives with testing, construction, demolition, mining and quarrying near urban areas has increased dramatically. Once remote, testing areas have been encroached upon by commercial and residential areas. Evidence has been found that overpressure levels near these areas can be estimated using meteorological conditions. This paper reviews a study where 205 test shots were fired, meteorological conditions recorded, and over-pressure levels estimated using multiple regression techniques.

"Suncor Inc. Oilsands Group mining operation in Northern Alberta, Canada, has been blasting to loosen the oilsands to increase production and decrease maintenance of the bucketwheel excavators for over twenty years. In 1991 an area of the mine was encountered which had a working face of 130 feet rather than the usual 20 to 57. In order to maintain production objectives, the planning and blasting departments of the mine took on the task of blasting as much of the working face as possible. McGinnis Rathole Drilling Company provided the drilling for the project and Mining Services International (MSI) delivered the bulk explosives to the boreholes. It is believed the resultingblasts exceeded several known records in production blasting."

Kennecott Energy's Colowyo Coal Mine is the largest open pit coal mine in Colorado and produces 5.5 MM tons per year. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven seams of rolling coal ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Draglines are used to strip overburden ranging from 60 to 120 feet thick off two coal seams. These two seams are characterized by soft and fold fractured coal and in past practice cast blasting caused excessive coal damage. As a result, to ensure minimal coal damage and high coal recoveries, the overburden was excavated in two passes. The first pass removed the upper overburden to within 10 to 20 feet of the coal seam. The second pass removed the remaining overburden above the coal. Two-pass mining was effective in controlling coal damage, but also carried significant additional costs.

The goal of the program is to develop smooth, sound walls in all development ends. A good perimeter blasting method will improve safety, reduce waste rock handling, allow easier support installation and reduce scaling time. I was lucky to land a job in the powder business. I was looking for some way to support my wife and first child to be when I saw an ad in the Hercules magazine, “Explosives Engineer” for technical representatives. I answered the ad in hopes that a geologist might find something else to do besides sit oil wells or “doodlebug” for oil. Both of these occupations I had tried and while the money was good the life was a bit erratic. The Army also wasn’t made for a guy who asked too many questions although my two plus years in uniform were interesting and in a few cases fun.
