THE property of New Calumet Mines, Limited, is on Calumet island, in the Ottawa river, about sixty-six miles northwest of Ottawa. Lead and zinc orebodies were discovered here in 1893. A gravity concentration plant was built in 1912 but was not a success metallurgically, and the plant was later destroyed by fire. A programme of diamond drilling on the property, started in 1937 and continuing to 1942, indicated ore reserves amounting to 1,300,000 tons averaging 2.75 per cent lead, 8.82 per cent zinc, and 0.041 oz. gold and 6.24 oz. silver per ton( l ). These orebodies have been developed underground by cross-cutting and drifting from a three-compartment vertical shaft, sunk to a depth of 745 feet. 'The ore is a contact metamorphic deposit occurring in rocks of the Grenville series, on or near the contact between biotite gneiss and an overlying calcareous amphibolite(2,3). It consists chiefly of iron-bearing sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and minor amounts of chalcopyriteand argentite. The gangue minerals closely associated with the ore are calcite, quartz, and various lime-silicate minerals.

A thermodynamic and kinetic model is proposed to explain the formation of bornite, chalcopyrite and magnetite during partial roasting of enargite-containing copper concentrates. The proposed mechanism involves solid-solid-gas and solid-gas reactions between chalcocite, pyrrhotite, gaseous sulfur and oxygen. The formation of bornite could be explained by a two-step reaction: the first one involving the formation of chalcopyrite by a reaction between Cu2S, FeS and gaseous sulfur, followed by a second step in which the newly formed chalcopyrite reacts with additional chalcocite to form bornite. Although thermodynamically the direct formation of bornite is more favorable than that of chalcopyrite, the lower diffusion kinetics of bornite formation could explain the preferential formation of chalcopyrite. If the reaction occurs with stoichiometric chalcocite and pyrrhotite in the presence of gaseous sulfur to form chalcopyrite, no bornite is formed, while for the stoichiometric reaction between chalcopyrite and chalcocite in the absence of sulfur, only bornite is formed. For the formation of magnetite and chalcopyrite the mechanism could involve the partial reaction of chalcocite and pyrrhotite in the presence of oxygen. The proposed model is thermodynamically consistent with the experimental results obtained in laboratory and pilot plant. INTRODUCTION The processing of high-arsenic copper concentrates with over 0.7 wt.-% arsenic by conventional smelting-converting normally require an additional arsenic removal step to reduce arsenic content to levels below 0.2–0.3%. One of these high-arsenic copper concentrates is the one produced by the Ministro Hales Division (DMH) of CODELCO, which has the typical chemical composition shown in Table 1. Enargite (Cu3AsS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and pyrite (FeS2) are the main mineralogical species present in these concentrates, with over 75 wt.-%, as shown in Table 2. Partial or “neutral” roasting of these concentrates under controlled temperature and partial oxygen pressure conditions at 923–993K (650–720ºC) can remove up to 95% of the arsenic as As2S3 (As4S6), which has a high vapor pressure under these conditions, leaving a calcine with low residual arsenic. In copper concentrates, arsenic is present generally as enargite and arsenopyrite. This compounds as well as others such as pyrite and covelite, decompose readily above 770 K (500ºC), releasing, in addition to gaseous arsenic trisulfide, gaseous sulfur which by oxidizing to SO2 generates most of the heat required by the process.

"The availability and reliability of large grinding mills and their Gearless Mill Drives (GMDs) are of paramount importance for the grinding process. Although GMDs have been in service for decades, and are known for their operational efficiency (reliability and robustness with reduced operating cost per ton), compared to conventional drives, in the last decade due to certain reasons some failures led to serious unscheduled shutdowns and significant insurance events.The majority of these notable ""insured"" failures have happened on GMDs installed on relatively large mills, as the financial impact of a failure is proportional to the through-put of the mill. Despite the occurrences of these events, as mining operations are driven by lower ore grades and the ability to continue reducing operating costs per ton, the trend for having larger mills is still very present and there is no reason why this trend should not continue.It is obvious that if not handled correctly, the possibility of large value GMD loss events, coupled with the continuing increase in mill size or required availability and reliability targets, could potentially lead to major conflicts as it becomes difficult for the insurance companies to judge the risk and hence may result in hesitation to insure these grinding circuits. This paper will not only describe the conflicting situation from both an insurer's perspective and from an equipment supplier's perspective, but also how these conflicting challenges can be successfully mastered. It has to be noted that not only the mining companies themselves, but also their insurance companies and the involved equipment suppliers have a common interest: to reach the highest availability and reliability in order to avoid or at least minimize unscheduled shut down times, and most importantly prevent unplanned events that result in extended production stoppages or reductions in through-put of GMD driven mills.From the very beginning onwards, the complete service concept together with emergency plans must be integrated on every level in the design of the grinding circuit. This approach must be implemented continuously and without compromises by all involved parties during all following stages, such as basic design, detail design, manufacturing, quality inspection and testing, packing, transportation, storage, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. The concept of formal risk analysis related to mill operations, maintenance and spare parts strategies must be an integral part of mining companies’ decisions related to the selection for installation and continued use of large mills powered by GMDs. The service concept in place for operating mills shall also have a clear focus on very early detection of any abnormalities, so that the risk can be mitigated and unscheduled shutdown times avoided. However, if a major failure occurs, then procedures and tools shall already be available in order to ensure that production impact is minimized."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Department of Energy, Mines and Resources has recently developed two automatic controls for use in the cyanidation circuits of Canadian gold mills. These controls are the alkalinity probe and the Continuous Cyanide Titrator both of which are discussed in the paper ""Instrumentation in the Cyanide Process"".(1)In May 1966 these process controls and associated recording equipment were installed in the Bralorne mill by two Scientific Officers from the Department. The object was to determine if the equipment was amenable and applicable to this particular circuit. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the performance of the equipment over a test period of 4 months.CONCLUSIONSThe results of test work to date indicates that both the Conductivity Probe and the Continuous Cyanide Titrator would be an as set to the operation of the Bralorne mill.The conclusions are generalized as follows:-(1) At a milling rate of 100, 000 tons per year the expected reductionin reagent consumption would give a direct saving of 37, 660 lbs of lime@$0.030 per lb and 15, 790 lbs of sodium cyanide@ $0.175 per lb. Such cost savings would pay for the equipment and installation costs within a 30 month period"

This work explores the effect of ore hardness variability on the design of a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage and grid backup, to operate a semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). First, a case of two synthetic ore populations was studied, without any consideration of spatial distribution. The mean and variance of the ore hardness (measured in specific energy consumption) of both populations were subjected to a sensitivity analysis. The operation was evaluated with one and two stockpiles. The latter allows classifying according to ore hardness to adapt the SAG energy consumption to the solar cycle. The results show that using two stockpiles allows achieving a larger autonomy (i.e., fewer energy imports) at lower total costs, especially when the difference of mean hardness between the two populations is large. The difference in variance (between the two populations) has a smaller impact on the design recommendations. Second, a case study was performed considering the spatial distribution of geometallurgical units. Two cases were considered: (a) brownfield, when there is historical information of the actual variability of the ore hardness; and (b) greenfield, when the system design relies mainly on geometallurgical modeling. Brownfield and greenfield planning result in similar sizing recommendations of the solar power plant if precise drill cores are available. In this case, geometallurgical modeling is an effective tool for forecasting the energy demand necessary for designing the power plant. INTRODUCTION Solar energy can help make mining more sustainable (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017). With falling battery costs, an autonomous solar supply is soon to become an economical alternative in many parts of the world, even in the presence of a larger power grid (Child et al., 2017). Although this, places with high solar radiation such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, nowadays show a large potential of incorporating solar energy as a supply of energy. Many of the Chilean copper mines are in this zone making it interesting to study their compatibility and potential of integrating this renewable source to their operation. The power demand in a copper mineral processing plant is determined by the main power loads in grinding and flotation, with grinding typically the largest power consumer, especially the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills (Wei and Craig, 2009). In Chile, it corresponds on average the 50% of the electrical energy consumption (COCHILCO, 2013). Solar energy production is determined by the irradiance perceived into the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (which varies through the geographic location) and several other climatic parameters such as the current season, humidity, temperature, altitude, and others (Molina et al., 2017). Also, solar energy is only generated during the sun hours, getting to a maximum generation at a certain peak hour during midday, and finally dropping to zero during the night. This shows a cyclic parabolic profile as shown in Figure 1. Due to the SAG mill operated continuously, the power supply always must be available. During the night, to continue supplying the energy, it is necessary to complement the solar power generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will act as a power backup and a buffer. For the optimal sizing of this PV- BESS system, information of the demand profile is needed (Pamparana et al., 2017). In the case of the SAG mill operation, the resulting demand relates to the ore-hardness for a specific throughput and grind size (Morrell, 2004). Therefore, for a given throughput and target grind size, a harder ore would require more power, and variable hardness results in more variable demand and a subsequent need for larger energy storage (Bueno et al., 2015). "Backfill practices at the Williams mine have evolved significantly since underground mining began in 1986. The use of conveyors as a means of transporting fill material to stopes has been discontinued in favour of load-haul-dump equipment. The method of adding binder to the fill product has been refined along with the placement technique. Slurry preparation has been fully automated and flyash is now included as a binding agent. Surface preparation of the fill product has evolved substantially with the quarry operation coming into full operation and the construction of pennanent crushing, screening, and storage facilities. Company personnel have replaced all contracted labour involved in backfill operations. Some changes have been made to achieve a higher standard of quality control while others were implemented as a matter of cost reduction. BackgroundThe Williams mine is one of three mines operating at the Hernlo gold deposit, located 40 km east of Marathon, Ontario, along the north shore of Lake Superior. Daily production at the mine is 6000 Ud yielding an annual gold production of approximately 500 000 oz. The orebody extends from surface to a depth of 1300 m dipping north at 70 degrees. The average orebody width is 25 m, but varies from 45 m on the eastern boundary to about 10 m at the western probable limit and at depth. Proven and probable reserves currently stand at 32 million tonnes grading 6 g/t.The Williams orebody has been divided into four separate mining zones: the A-zone, the West-of-Dyke zone, the B-zone, and the C-zone (Fig 1). Ore production originally was from the A-zone open pit operation while the A-zone and B-zone underground workings were being developed. The mining method employed underground is blasthole open stoping with delayed rockfill. Mining block dimensions are nominally 20 m along strike by 25 m high. Stope extraction is sequenced to achieve a relatively short pillar life and 100010 ore recovery. Pillars are extracted as soon as the adjacent primary stopes are two cycles ahead. Primary stopes are filled with consolidated rock fill after mining. This allows pillars to be blasted right against the consolidated fill, but also requires that the fill be self supporting to a height of 30 m.The Williams mine places approximately 1.4 million tonnes of rockfill and 50 000 tonnes of binding agents each year, with about three quarters of the fill placed being consolidated. The consolidated fill placed at the Williams mine contains Portland cement and flyash as binding agents."

"Line Creek Resources Ltd. produces three million clean tonnes per year of metallurgical and thermal coals for the international market. The mining operation, which is located in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, produces coal from four pits by conventional truck and shovel methods.The South Pit, which has been in operation since J982, has a benched highwall 490 m in height. Shallow dipping coal seams at the base of the syncline formation will be exposed in the highwall over the next four years of pit life. The first of these seams, which will measure 500 m in final highwall length, was exposed in J994. An auger, powered by a 1250 hp engine capable of cutting 2.2 m diameter holes, was brought on site in J994 and has proven to be a successful means of recovering coal from the J3 m thick seam.This paper covers the background to the selection of an auger mining method to recover highwall reserves together with the geotechnical and methane considerations for this approach.IntroductionLine Creek Resources Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd., owns and operates the Line Creek mine. The operation which consists of four active pits, a processing plant, and rail loadout is located in the southeastern coal fields of British Columbia. Figure 1 shows the general area.The coal bearing sequence at the mine is preserved on the east and west limbs of a major syncline. Up to twelve mineable coal seams, ranging in thickness from 2 m to 15 m are contained in the formation. Within the pits the seams are stratigraphically consistent and structurally undisturbed, except for small-scale thrust faults that create multiple repeats of the seams."

"ABSTRACT:-A 60—cm semiautogenous grinding-(SAG) mill was designed -for continuous wet operation in closed circuit with a vibrating screen. The circuit is fully instrumented and automated. Part of the control system incorporates Foxboro SPEC 200 controllers around the pump box to maintain level. The rest of the control system involves an ACTION model BC2 basic direct digital controller that handles all other inputs/outputs and contact closure sensing:·The success of the control system is attributed to the uniqueness of specially designed mass flow metering systems. Various control strategies are possible. Employed to date has been control of a mill load set-point by cascading the deviation from load set-point as the set-point to the fresh feed rate ""controller"". Mill feed water is ratioed to total flow rate of solids fed to the mill. The performance of the circuit is being correlated with the performance of full scale SAG circuits in British Columbia to develop models, to assess the feasibility of scale up and to investigate the effects of design variables on responses such as circuit throughput. 1 INTRODUCTIONWhere ore types are appropriate, semiautogenous grinding and/or autogenous grinding (AG) has replaced conventional grinding. Secondary/Tertiary crushing plants are thereby eliminated so that capital expenditures are less and overall comminution costs can be lower (Barratt 1982). To establish the suitability of an ore for SAG circuits, pilot scale tests with 1.7 to 1.8 M diameter mills are often conducted. At least one test per ore type in a deposit has been necessary. Often, each test involves a large amount (up to 50 tonne) of sample, so that the testwork can be expensive and may discourage the use of SAG or AG circuits. However, MacPherson (1977) has employed a continuous 45 cm dry Aerofall mill circuit closed with screens and an air classifier to determine whether ores are suitable for SAG milling. The amount of sample per ore type is of the order of 60 kg or less. Thus an established SAG mill scale up procedure that employs small circuits is highly desirable.The purpose of this paper is to describe a small 60 cm wet continuous SAG/ AG mill pilot circuit assembled at the University of British Columbia to study the feasibility of scale up, to assess the influence of design variables, to develop mathematical models and to evaluate the effects of alternative control strategies on circuit performance"

"IntroductionGravity concentration, the separation of two or more minerals due to the difference in their relative specific gravity and usually in a fluid medium, is the oldest recorded form of mineral processing.The principles of gravity concentration were known to, and practiced by, the ancients and Hoover's commentary to De Re Meta/lied'' notes many early references.Over the centuries, as direct smelting ores became more and more uncommon, the mineral processing industry developed and along with it many varied methods of concentration. Gravity concentration declined rapidly in importance in the early twentieth century, and it is only in the last decade that its advantages are being re-evaluated.A significant proportion of ores are processed by gravity; a large proportion being in the iron and coal industries<'>, or in the treatment at very high volume of relatively coarse alluvial deposits. The tin dredges of South East Asia and Beach sand plants of Australia are prime examples.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. About 90 per cent of Manitoba's industrial minerals production is for structural materials. Most of these come from the Paleozoic rocks west of the Precarnbrian Shield, or from glacial deposits that are extensive throughout Manitoba. The major raw materials are sand and gravel, and carbonate rocks for crushed stone (and also dolomite for high-magnesia lime, high-calcium limestone for lime and Portland cement, and dolomitic limestone for Tyndall stone). Glacial lake clays are used both in cement and in lightweight aggregate. The Jurassic and Cretaceous strata exposed along or near the Manitoba Escarpment include siliceous, carbonaceous, kaolinitic and illitic shales, all of which are quarried by Red River Brick and Tile in the Pembina Mountain and Ste. Rose areas for use in a brick plant at Lockport. Non-swelling bentonite near the base of the Pembina Member of the Upper Cretaceous Vermilion River Formation is of value as an absorbent clay, and is the only commercial source in production in Canada. It has been quarried by Pembina Mountain Clays Limited since 1940. Gypsum occurs in the Jurassic Amaranth Formation and supplies much of the market for wallboard and Portland cement additive in the Prairie Provinces. Quarries are operated at Gypsumville by Domtar Construction Materials Limited, and north of Amaranth by Westroc Industries Limited. Silica sand from the Ordovician Winnipeg Formation is of glass-grade quality, and about 100,000 tonnes are produced annually by Steel Brothers Canada Limited on Black Island . It is used as a glass sand, as foundry sand, for sand blasting, and as a filter-bed sand .

"The Quemont property comprises 640 acres lying directly north of and adjoining the Noranda (Horne) mine. During 1926 to 1928, United Verde Extension Mining Corporation sank a shaft 235 feet and did 3,000 feet of development work on the 215-foot level. Between 1929 and 1930, Quemonr Mining Corporation deepened the shaft to 926 feet, and did further lateral work and drilling on the 500- and 900-foot levels. This work was confined to an area close to the south boundary and met with little encouragement.Following a period of idleness a magnetic survey was made in the winter of 1944, followed in the summer of the same year by some 6,000 feet of drilling. The first successful hole was drilled in February, 1945, from the ice of Osisko lake.To the time of writing, 131,000 feet of drilling, surface and underground,have indicated a large tonnage of gold-silver-copper-zinc ore, and although some knowledge of the geology and structure is emerging, it is too early to draw definite conclusions. The following brief description deals only with those structural features that are reasonably well indicated."

"IntroductionWE HAVE HEARD quite a lot recently on newer methods -of supporting roof, such as roof bolting or the use of metal props and •booms, but, with the exception of roof bolting, these methods are confined mostly to comparatively low, regular seams and even .bolting cannot be used to hold soft sides. Thus, where a seam of coal has great variations in thickness, or where it is faulty, or where the coal sides must be supported, nothing can wholly take the place of timbering with wood. This paper will deal mainly with the method of timbering such a seam, namely, the No. 3 seam mined by Brazeau Collieries, Limited, at Nordegg, Alberta, where the full height of a thick seam is mined in development. However, a few words on one or two other systems practised in Alberta when, in development work, a thick seam is only partially mined, should be of interest.Examples of Timbering in High SeamsThere .are several methods in use today for dealing with high seams of coal. The most popular is to develop the seam by driving road-ways in the coal by some conventional method, usually recovering the full thickness of the seam on the retreat. The following examples illustrate two variations of this method.In Figure I we have a thick •seam of friable coal, with a good roof, pitching about 30 degrees, which is being mined by taking the upper part of the seam in the development work, leaving the •bench coal in place. ?Even though the age of many existing coal units exceeds 30 years, these units continue to perform with excellent reliability and at a competitive cost with other fossil fuel units. ?NERC data shows a consistent increase in availability for all utility coal generation ?With the opening of power markets, the challenge for coal is to produce competitive electricity while meeting increasingly stringent, and costly environmental limits. ?During the 60s and 70s, subcritical steam power plants dominated the market. The emphasis was on scale-up to larger MW size units. ?In the last decade, we have seen interest in a broader set of technologies with new drivers: ?Fluidized bed technology was developed to respond to increased environmental requirements, particularly with lower quality fuels ?Supercritical pressure units have gained interest for both fuel cost savings and reduced emissions due to higher efficiency.

"The Last Chance claim is about 13 miles north of the village of Nicola and northeast of the city of Merritt; in the south-central part of British Columbia. It lies within Nicola mining division on the northern slope of Swakum mountain; near its summit. It may be reached by means of a branch road from the Kamloops-Merritt highway that leaves the highway at Nicola.The property was originally staked as a copper prospect by Oscar Schmidt in 1916. A number of cuts were driven and a test shipment of 22 tons of ore, averaging 4.6 per cent copper, was made from the surface showings. The property was then optioned to Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, who did a small amount of drilling, after which the option was abandoned. The same year an option was secured by Northwestern Mines, Limited, of Spokane, and a SO-foot shaft was sunk. This option also was abandoned and after a number of years the property lapsed, but was re-staked in 1942 as a tungsten prospect along with other claims, and was drilled for the Metals Controller in 1943."

"The study of the geology of Mayo district began in 1900 with R. G. McConnell's exploration of Stewart river; and has been carried on intermittently for the Geological Survey of Canada by J. Keele; D. D. Cairnes; W. E. Cockfield; C. H. Stockwell; and the writer. It has revealed a thick group of schists; quartzites; and crystalline limestones; almost certainly Precambrian in age; placed in the Yukon group; and a group of younger intrusive igneous rocks varying in composition from granite to gabbro. These include bodies of many sizes and forms; from stocks 8 miles across to small dykes and sills.Prospecting in the district began about 1897 and has disclosed the presence of gold, silver, lead, tungsten, tin, zinc, antimony, copper, arsenic, manganese, and mercury, both in placer and lode deposits . Of these metals gold, silver, and tungsten have been produced from placer deposits, and silver, lead, and gold from lodes. This paper deals only with some structural relationships of the lode deposits, generally referred to as the silver-lead veins, which have yielded the greater part of the mineral production of the area. From 1938 to 1941 the geological mapping of the district for publication on a scale of 4 miles to 1 inch was carried out by the writer, and the ideas expressed here are based on this work. No comprehensive detailed study of the silver-lead veins has been made, but the mapping has brought to light several important facts. The rocks of the Yukon group, although of a striking sameness throughout their section, can be divided into a number of distinguishable members by means of which the main structures can be traced . The most important and readily distinguishable rock in the group is referred to here as the quartzite member. This is composed of quartzite and schist in about equal proportions. The quartzite is resistant to erosion and forms most of the outcrops of the'member and the peaks of the Gustavus mountains and mount Haldane (Lookout)."

"SINCE their inception, the mineral industries have, from time to time, been confronted by various and sundry problems. These have been identified, attacked and solved by means of a slow methodical process peculiar to these industries. During the past decade, these industries have experienced increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate supply of manpower. This poses a situation which seems to be unlike those that came before it in that it appears to be immune to those methods of attack which were successful in the past. Despite various attacks upon the problem, its seriousness appears to be increasing at an increasing rate. The point has now been reached where the President of AIME recently expressed the opinion that this is the most serious problem facing these industries at this time (1). Another observer has gone so far as to state, ""Given the motivation and the determination, the crisis in mineral education in Canada, can, in time be met. But it will take a generation if we Start DOW (2)"".Part of the difficulty arises out of the identification and assessment of the problem itself. For, although the manpower shortage has been developing over a fairly long period of time, there still appears to be no unanimity concerning its seriousness and the nature of the threat which it poses. Some observers continue to maintain that the current situation is not new at all, but is merely the reappearance of something old which is cyclic in nature. They observe that in the past there were numerous periods where the mineral industries encountered manpower shortages but that, in each instance, the situation eventually rectified itself. Furthermore, they draw attention to the fact that the current problem is not confined to the mineral industries but that in fact all industries are experiencing an increasing manpower shortage. They are therefore confident that if left alone the present problem will eventually disappear."

"Naturally occurring geomaterials such as sandstone, limestone and other soft rocks, residual soils are composed of a particulates held together through a cohesive matrix, usually composed of argillaceous or siliceous cementing agents. Geo-materials such as these have been reconstituted in the laboratory using ordinary Portland cement in lieu of the naturally occurring cohesive matrix, in addition to using sand particulates. This cohesive frictional granular ensemble is an ideal model material for understanding the mechanical behaviour of transitional geomaterials such as soft rocks. An important consequence of this cohesion that pervades the inter particulate system is the enhanced tensile strength when compared to a purely granular ensemble. The assessment of strength of these soft rocks and cemented sands is often understood in the framework of continuum mechanics, i.e. considering the cemented sand to be a continuum, and performing simple elemental tests such as uniaxial compression or tension tests. A simple model to describe the behaviour of these cemented sands has been to use elements such as springs, sliders, and dashpots in parallel to describe the existence of a cohesive and frictional component of strength (Jiang et al. 2007). In the framework of continuum mechanics, the mechanical response of these cemented sands have been modeled using traditional plasticity theory, for example utilizing variants of the traditional Mohr Coulomb model, Modified cam clay (Sun and Matsuoka 1999) etc. The typical sand models are amended to include the effects of cohesion, as proposed by Lagoia and Nova (1995).The mechanical response of cemented sands is understood to be transitional to the behaviour of a typical particulate assemblage and a quasi-brittle material. However, the effect of length scale in these material systems has not been investigated. This paper presents a series of uniaxial compression experiments conducted on weakly cemented sand specimens of various sizes. The effect of length scale in these weakly cemented sands is investigated through unconfined compression tests."

"This paper is a market-oriented review of the industry's present and forecasted performance, considering some of the principal factors influencing natural resource development. The author illustrates the steady consumption growth of nickel, and stresses the need for a quantitative long-range approach to production, consumption and the supply/ demand balance on a worldwide basis. Objective consideration of this data exposes some popular misconceptions. The possibility of near-term undersupply of nickel is discussed in relation to historically rapid changes in inventories and demand patterns. What is the significance of the increasing reliance on lateritic sources? New• facilities, new processing methods and new product forms are illustrated as further evidence of the industry's determination to satisfy the needs and preferences of nickel consumers. Examples indicate how product forms must accommodate to fast-evolving end-use technology. A review of nickel's price performance is used as a base from which to explore tomorrow's price trends."

"The Central Patricia mine is in the greenstone belt north of lake Sc. Joseph in northwestern Ontario. It is 90 miles north of Allanwater on the Canadian National railway and 220 miles east of the Manitoba boundary. The unusual feature of the ore of this mine is that the gold does not occur in quartz but in sulphide minerals filling fractures in iron formation.AREAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the area in which the mine occurs belong to the Early Precambrian. They consist · of andesite lavas and tuff interbedded with greywacke-like sediments and iron formation . A siliceous phase of the sediments lying north and south of the greywacke enclosing the ore-bearing iron formation in places resembles a sheared and sericitized quartz porphyry. This is shown in the legend of Fig. 1 as quartz porphyry and quartzite, but it is possible that the quartz porphyry-like phase is sediment. A northwest- striking dyke of diabase crosses the property 3,000 feet east of the shaft ( Fig. 1).IRON FORMATIONAlthough there are numerous bands of iron formation in the v1cm1ty of the mine, ore has been found to date in only one main and two lesser zones. The iron formation bands range in width from a few inches to 60 feet, and are interrupted along their strike by gaps that are parallel and rake to the east at about 65°. The iron formation is definitely banded and laminated."
