This paper outlines Canada's current status in world iron ore markets, and evaluates the prospects for the future. Estimates for the production, export and consumption of iron ore are given. Canada's major market will continue to be the United States, with the European Common Market countries, Japan and the United Kingdom also forming important outlets. The advantages held by Canada's major competitors in these latter three market areas are briefly discussed.

This paper presents the shielding effectiveness (SE) of woven continuous carbon/epoxy composite materials. The theoretical and physical concepts behind the experimental results are demonstrated in details. The influence of frequency, the overlapping angle between overlapped layers and the number of overlapped layers upon the EMI shielding of composite sheets are discussed. In this work, in particular, the epoxy layers are considered as dielectric apertures of the conducting carbon fiber slab for the interpretation of the experimental results. The experimental results, using ASTM standard D4935-89, indicate that the SE can reach values greater than 90 dB above 500 MHz.

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. The conditions for rockburst occurrence are traditionally identified as: high stress, high extraction ratio, strong brittle rocks, folding, faulting, and unfavourable excavation geometry. Based on a critical review of case histories, this paper identifies oblique loading of orebodies by the major far field principal stress as a cause of rockbursts. Orebodies subjected to this loading condition are termed orebodies in shear. Orebodies in shear are subjected to compressive and shear loads. The case histories presented unambiguously show that the magnitudes of the far field principal stress alone, and a knowledge of the conventional rockburst causing factors are not sufficient for mine planning and design. The orientation of the major far field principal stress, or for that matter the driving stress relative to the orebody axis, should be recognised as one of the causes of rockbursts. It is suggested that since stress orientation is an important factor, and orientations from stress measurements are so variable, orientations from stress measurement data be complemented with underground observations from borehole and excavation breakouts to determine the actual in situ stress orientation, whenever possible. Also stress modelling for the design of critical elements (pillars) should include a sensitivity analysis on the relative critical field stress direction. Among all spraying processes, cold spraying has attracted a special attention in recent years, both as a coating - and more recently - as a rapid manufacturing technique. The interest in this process is mainly because of the fact that the deposition of spray material takes place at moderately low temperatures, and thus, oxidation and unfavourable microstructural changes can be alleviated. In this process, a highly compressed gas, flowing through a de Laval nozzle, accelerates the particles of the spray powder to high velocities of up to 1200 m/s. Although there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate, cold-sprayed deposits can be denser and more tightly bonded as compared to the equivalent deposits produced by conventional thermal spraying methods. The present contribution focuses on this unique aspect of cold spraying. Modelling of particle impact, combined with various experimental observations, is employed to illustrate that bonding of particles and hence material deposition occurs through shear instability - associated with severe plastic deformation and localized heat generation - at the interacting surfaces of particles and substrate. The results of modelling also provide an insight to the influence of material and process parameters on the critical velocity and on the microstructural properties of cold-sprayed deposits.

Metallurgical plants are typically large, complex facilities. Their design is a multidisciplinary activity with a wide range of inputs, based on: the business case; metallurgical and process requirements; and the main processing equipment selection. Many constraints limit what can be achieved. Appropriate phasing of the design and development, and clear go/no-go decision criteria, are critical to successful implementation of a plant design project. Risk management concepts are used as a framework for successful project development, working from the business case, through project development, to implementation and startup, paying constant attention to technology, safe design, and sustainability. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The subject of “Metallurgical Plant Design” is the design of metallurgical plant facilities in the broadest sense. Plant design represents the culmination of many multidisciplinary activities: knowledge of process metallurgy is applied to design facilities to manufacture useful, economical, metal-based products. In the field of metallurgy, plant design is often overlooked, and its unique requirements are commonly not well understood, let alone appreciated. This book is a contribution to remedying this situation. The focus is the specifics of the metals industries, because an extensive literature already exists on the general topic of plant design.

One of the most attractive features of electron beam curing as a process for manufacturing composite structures is the potential for attaining very low levels of residual stress as compared to thermal curing. This residual stress reduction is important both for the potential to reduce composite failure strains at low operating temperatures and the associated reduction in process-induced deformation. Previous work has demonstrated that it is possible in some cases to significantly reduce residual stress development during irradiation and also avoid development of additional residual stress during post cure. In this paper, simple L-shaped composite laminates were used to study the development of residual stress and deformation during thermal post-cure of specimens that were already partially cured using different radiation doses. Introduction The mine at Copper Mountain of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company was one of the pioneers in the use of blast-hole diamond drilling for ore breakage. This method of mining has now been brought to a high degree of perfection. The system in use has?been described in a previously published paper which has become an important part of the literature o the blast-hole drilling method. At the time of the establishment of the system at Copper Mountain, standardized loading and drilling procedures were set up. These procedures were based partly on the results of experiment and partly upon the judgment of men experienced in breaking rock in the mine. The success of the method has been proof of their adequacy. With the progress of scoping in the mine, the diamond drill method of breaking was applied to other ore blocks where different conditions obtained. It was found necessary to make adjustments in the standard procedures to get the best results under the new conditions. The following paper attempts to express, in terms of mathematics, the relations of the variable factors. Until recently, estimations of drilling required were based upon the tonnage to be broken and the proposed rate of explosive loading. A revised method of estimating is outlined below which is direct and which involves no unrelated variable factors.

A Joint Venture between Hope Bay Gold Corporation and Miramar Mining Corporation recently acquired the Hope Bay project in Nunavut, which represents the first discovery of a major new Archean greenstone gold belt in Canada since the discovery of Hemlo in 1982 and the Yellowknife belt in 1938. Located some 685 km North of Yellowknife, the Hope Bay Belt is geologically comparable to the other major gold producing regions of Canada. The initial discovery of gold mineralization in 1992 led BHP to acquire virtually all of the Hope Bay belt. Over the subsequent 6 years, BHP expended C$85 million on exploration, including 180,000 meters of drilling, 2.3km of underground workings and a 27,000 tonne bulk sample, as well as extensive environmental and economic studies. Hope Bay Gold and Miramar acquired the Hope Bay property in December 1999 for a cost of C$27 million, considerably less than the C$85 million spent by BHP in exploring the property. They both hold 50% of the project, and share expenses equally. Hope Bay Gold is the manager of all exploration phases and Miramar will manage feasibility, construction and operations. The Hope Bay Joint Venture controls 1,117 sq. km., covering virtually the entire 80 km long Hope Bay and adjacent Elu greenstone belts. We believe that Hope Bay is one of the best-undeveloped gold projects in Canada. Work to date has defined a global resource in excess of three million ounces of gold in three principal deposits, each of which is open to extension along strike and to depth. A C$17 million work program for year 2000 focused on advancing a significant portion of the gold resource to a measured and indicated category. This will provide the basis for initiation of a feasibility study in 2001. The 2000 drill program was one of the largest undertaken in Canada last year, and is a clear indication of our confidence that Hope Bay will develop into a major gold producing district. The majority of the potential mineable areas known to date lie within 350m of surface and would be accessed through a combination of open pit and declines. Currently, development of a 1,800 to 2,000 tpd gold mine producing in excess of 300,000 ounces of gold per year at cash costs below $US200 per ounce is envisioned. In addition, the exploration potential on the 80 km gold belt at Hope Bay is clearly tremendous.

The paper outlines: methods used for the determination of wear metals in motor and transmission oils; contaminents in motor, transmission and crusher lubricating oils; and viscosity determinations. Case histories and costs are presented to illustrate the value of an oil analysis program. Introduction NORANDA MINES LIMITED (BELL COPPER DIVISION) is located on the shores of Babine Lake, approximately 450 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. Access to the mine is by road from Topley, B.C., about 40 miles away. When a preventive maintenance analysis program was first considered, it was obvious that if samples were to be sent out for analysis, results would not be available for at least a week, due to the distance from any commercial laboratory. The assay laboratory was asked to investigate the possibility of determining wear metals on site. A limited program was started soon after production commenced, and this has now grown to include all large mobile equipment as well as crushers and grinding mills. The laboratory also now determines viscosity, fuel dilution, dirt and abrasives, glycol and water. All these results are ready within two days. This paper will outline the methods used, data interpretation, several case histories and the benefits from such a program.

Syphons can be a simple, reliable and proven alternative to otherwise more complex pumping systems or low level outlet works. In a simple form they consist of a pipeline constructed over the top of an embankment or high topographic feature, connecting a source pond to a receiving pond or channel (see Photograph 1). The syphon action is initiated by removing air from the pipeline (priming) using simple devices which can be purchased ?off the shelf?. Once primed, the syphon flow rate can be controlled or stopped using conventional gate, valve, orifice plate or other devices. Repriming is not required even if the flow is stopped, provided the syphon is not drained. A limiting factor in considering a syphon as a design option is the maximum lift (i.e., vertical distance from source pond level to summit of syphon) which is approximately 9 metres, or less, dependent on syphon pipe features and site conditions. Pipeline syphons can be quickly constructed from readily available materials including steel, polyethylene and PVC pipe. They are particularly well suited to many of the unique conditions often encountered at minesites. This paper identifies situations that can sometimes be best resolved using pipeline syphons. It provides basic principles for pipeline syphon design and includes case histories of their successful application.

Powders of Al-50wt%Ni, Al-40wt%Ni and Al-36wt%Ni were produced using the Impulse Atomization technique, a rapid solidification technique. The molten droplets were cooled in-flight by the stagnant helium or nitrogen in the atomizing chamber. The resulting powders were sieved into different size ranges. X-Ray diffraction and neutron diffraction were used in order to quantify the phase fractions in the samples. The computer software GSAS was used to calculate the weight fraction of the existing phases, namely Al3Ni2, Al3Ni and Al, by profile refinement method. The effect of processing parameters, alloy composition and particle size will be discussed in this paper. In brief, no AlNi was found in any of the samples analyzed. Higher cooling rates resulted in the reduction of the ratio of Al3Ni/Al3Ni2. Also, at high cooling rates, Scheil closely predicted the ratio of Al3Ni/Al3Ni2. Some metastable phases were found in Al- 36wt%Ni.

Nominally [001]-oriented nickel-base single crystal (SX) superalloy CMSX-10 was investigated at 900°C under constant load, equivalent to an initial stress of 700 MPa, for creep strains from 7% to fracture strain (18.2%). The cross-sectional dimensions of initially uniform cylindrical specimens were measured along their entire length after the tests. The cross-section changed from circular to near elliptical shape. The anisotropic deformation, measured in terms of eccentricity, increased with the increasing strain level, but for a given strain level, it remained constant along the entire length of the initially uniform gauge section. The results are discussed in terms of diameter, eccentricity, area, local stress and microstructural observations. The most striking observation was the fact that all the specimens displayed a yoke-like shape, or the reduction of cross sectional area, at two locations within the originally uniform gauge section. Such observations have not been reported in the literature for single crystal superalloys.

The current study provides an experimental approach that aims at documenting the effects of different phases of CO2 (gas, liquid, supercritical fluid) on rock seismic responses. This has implications on obtaining quantitative estimates of fluid saturations for geological storage. The ultrasonic pulse transmission technique is the underlying methodology used in this work. Unlike previous rock physics studies involving CO2 as pore fluid, care is taken to fully saturate the studied samples and also to separate pore fluid effects from pore pressure build-up effects during the experiments. This allows to record seismic effects that are solely reflective of changes in the pore fluid properties. Measurements were done on a CO2 saturated Berea sandstone. Laboratory results show P- and S- waveform variations (velocity, amplitude) in response to CO2's varying phase state. Overall, CO2 phase changes (gas to liquid and gas to supercritical fluid) are marked by a drop in velocities, with the drop being smaller and less immediate over the gas-supercritical fluid transition than over the gas-liquid transition.

This study examined the effects of pH and sulphate concentration on the surface charge and stability of alumina and pyrite dispersions. The relationship between these properties was investigated using measurements of electrophoretic mobility and settling velocity. The maximum aggregation for both minerals was observed near the iso-electric point (iep) where the force of repulsion is at a minimum. Aggregation decreased at pH values away from the iep, where an increased surface charge causes electrostatic repulsion between particles. Zeta potential data revealed that sulphate ions were adsorbed only on positively charged surfaces for both minerals. Adsorption of sulphates on the alumina surface increased aggregation by reducing the surface charge from >+25 mV to close to zero. These results indicate an electrostatic bonding of sulphate ions to alumina surface. Preliminary results on the interaction of pyrite and sulphate ions indicate a similar response.

Addressing deficiencies and defects that occur during construction projects is costly and time consuming. The manual quality assurance programs currently used in the industry have certain limitations, including human error and lack of consistency. Hence, there is a need for integrated electronic models that employ new technologies and methods. This research introduces an integrated construction quality control system that has the potential to improve quality management processes in the construction field for piping construction, which is a complex process often requiring rework. The proposed integrated system relies on data collected from construction sites using photogrammetry and laser scanning, which is then used to compare actual work performed to that designed. The proposed system aims to improve the promptness and accuracy of quality assurance processes, in particular dimension measurements, by avoiding human error and integrating defect detection and quality management. The use of this system has highlighted some of the limitations during data fusion and acquisition process, which are highlighted in this paper. These aspects must be considered to increase the reliability of the acquired information.

Since the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gap (1). Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Franc;ois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the King of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors: - the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region; - the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry; - the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, md1spensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace; - the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery.

Whole-rock and muscovite potassium-argon dates from selected low-grade metamorphic rocks of Precambrian age in the Canadian Rocky Mountains near Jasper, Alberta, were obtained to ascertain the age of the source terrain and the age of the metamorphism. Ten argillites gave whole-rock dates ranging from 270 to 485 million years, dates which are apparently inter-mediate between the age of the source material and that of the metamorphism. "Up-dating" increases with the degree of orientation of muscovite in the cleavage plane, and with the ratio of the muscovite in the cleavage plane to that in the plane of the bedding. Detrital muscovite from four arenaceous rocks gave dates ranging from 1,050 to 1,780 million years. "Updating" increases with decreasing grain size, so that, within the range investigated, the cube of the median diameter (¢) of the muscovite is apparently proportional to the radiometric date.

"The present study investigated the texture transition during secondary recrystallization in the AA5182 sheet. During the initial stage of annealing, the texture showed a weak Cube orientation as the primary recrystallization texture. During the secondary recrystallization with abnormal grain growth, the area ratio of the {hkl} <011> orientations increased by consuming the other orientations. The texture transition was calculated by the 2-D Monte Carlo simulation with the misorientation dependency. When the higher grain boundary mobility was set in the specific range of the high angle misorientation, the orientation preferential growth of the RW {100} <011> orientation was reproduced. However, other {hkl} <110> orientations could not be well reproduced by the misorientation dependency.INTRODUCTION Crystal orientation and texture are important factors for aluminum sheet products from the standpoint of mechanical property, formability and isotropy. The recrystallization texture results from the orientation preferential growth from the rolling deformation microstructure and the texture (Alvi, Cheong, Suni, Weiland, & Rollett, 2008). Texture development has been a topic of intense research for decades with advances in analysis methods, e.g., orientation mapping (OIM) and computer simulations (Fjeldberg & Marthinsen, 2010; Ivasishin, Shevchenko, Vasiliev, & Semiatin, 2006). The grain boundary characteristic is considered to be a key for the orientation preferential growth. In the case of the recrystallization from the deformed microstructure, not only the grain boundary characteristic, but also the dislocation density and the subgrain size affect the nucleation and the grain growth (Engler, Löchte, & Hirsch, 2007). On the other hand, in the case of secondary recrystallization, the dislocation density and the subgrain size can be ignored and the effect of the grain boundary characteristic can play a significant role in the grain growth. There is intense research about the texture development during secondary recrystallization in aluminum alloys and it was reported that coarse {hkl} <011> grains were formed during the secondary recrystallization (Suk, Shin, & Huh, 2006; Rios, & Gottstein, 2001). However, the mechanism of forming the {hkl} <011> grains has not been fully clarified. In the present study, the effect of the grain boundary characteristic on the orientation preferential growth was investigated by EBSD analysis and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation."
