"Managing safety on the basis of after-the-fact reaction to accidents, can never be more than partially successful. Injuries will occur as long as the underlying potential for them still exists. Unless unsafe actions and conditions are systematically decreased, no program can have more than a short-term success.The pro-active Bullmoose loss control process, instead, focusses on heightening awareness of work habits, to prevent incidents by reducing their potential.Any safety program will be doomed to failure if the development of safe work habits depends on the safety supervisor or a safety committee. At Bullmoose the focus is on the critical actions out of which losses emerge. The successful application of performance-related feedback is achieved by taking safety, health, and environmental concerns into consideration on every level, and, by doing the right thing in every job done.What is an Exceptional Loss Control Program?If an accident in an organization creates a flurry of interest, resulting in ""cracking down"" on violations for a short period of time then an ""exceptional"" loss control program exists. Unfortunately, exceptional here does not refer to the effectiveness of quality of the program but to the fact that the organization is managing loss control by exception. The degree of management attention in an ""exceptional"" safety program varies over a period of time, remaining low as long as the rate of losses stays within management's acceptable control limit (Fig. I). When the losses rise above this, management becomes motivated to begin ""exceptional"" efforts to manage losses. When the rate falls again to within the accepted limit, efforts to control losses take a back seat.Such a strategy guarantees that losses will be tolerated or ignored as long as the actual rate is below the acceptable limit. Simply to lower the limit would not reduce losses, but would result in an increased number of flurries of management attention to loss control. This ""on-again, off-again"" style of management teaches supervisors and others that basic loss control is not as important as are statistics."

Hard-rock caverns for hydrocarbon storage are a very particular type of underground facility controlled not only by local administrative and regulatory constraints that can be very specific, but also by the possible risks of geotechnical or geomechanical failure. Each such facility throughout the world is a prototype that needs to be adapted to very different site conditions. The straight forward application of design methodologies from relatively similar fields (mines, tunnels) can be very useful, but risks holding back the scientific and technical improvements needed by an engineering industry in full development. Here we look at various case histories and at problems that have been raised where recent attempts at standardization would appear to have been ill adapted, and where storage designers, through experience and judgment, may still provide innovative engineering solutions.

"Alanx ceramic/metal composites are proprietary products developed by Lanxide Corporation who joined with Alcan to form Alanx Products L.P. in 1988. Alanx ceramic/metal composites are composed of silicon carbide in a combined alumina and metallic aluminum matrix. In laboratory slurry wear tests conducted by Alanx ceramic/metal composites have shown to perform well against other wear resistant materials. At the Kidd Creek Concentrator Alanx CG896 ceramic/metal composite was tested in two pumping applications, the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps. In both instances the wear rates of the parts made of Alanx CG896 were far less than the gum rubber parts traditionally used. As of year to date September 1992 the unit cost to repair primary cyclone pump parts has dropped 58% from 1991 figures. For the filter feed pumps the unit cost to maintain the pumps has dropped by 33% as compared to 1990 figures. The total savings represented by implementation of Alanx wear parts, based on projected year end unit costs for 1992, as compared to 1991 costs for primary cyclone feed pumps and 1990 figures for filter feed pumps, is $166,753. INTRODUCTIONAt the Kidd Creek Concentrator the cost to maintain the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps was a constant concern. Rubber wear part consumption was quite high and the manpower required was considerable. For 1991 the total cost to maintain five primary cyclone pumps was $244,062. The cost to maintain the filter feed pumps in 1990 was $72,076. A wear material was needed that would increase the time between repairs and that would increase the reliability of these pumps between scheduled shut downs."

Basic Assumptions about PeopleMost people in an organization, regardless of level, take pride in their work and generally want to do a good job. When performance falls off, there is usually some explanation other than the employee not really caring. People like to know their exact responsibilities and clearly what is expected of them. People like to know where they stand with the boss and would like to be evaluated on what they do and accomplish, rather than on what others think or feel about them. Further, people like to be rewarded for their good results, indeed, to understand what motivates people, we must look at what happens as a result of their actions. Another belief is that supervisors often have a greater influence on the performance of their people than they fully realize. Simply letting people know how important their performance is can have an impact. "An interactive computer simulation model of conveyor systems used in oil sands mining has been developed to aid in the selection of mining equipment and the evaluation of operating policies. The materials handling links between supply points, such as bucket-wheel excavators and draglines, and demand points such as bins and extraction plants are modelled in such a way that the conveyor model can be interfaced with any combination of these equipment submodels. Detailed calculations of the power demand of each conveyor section based on operating characteristics and conveyor design parameters are included to permit the close monitoring of energy requirements. Various interactive features are incorporated so that an operator can not only monitor, but also control, the mining operations in the model and experiment with different operating strategies.IntroductionThe interactive simulation model of conveyor systems described in this paper is one of a number of detailed computer models being jointly developed by the National Research Council and Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. on the mining equipment and operations used in oil sands mining. Reference I presents an overview of this whole series of models, their interrelationships and the underlying motivation for their development.A network of conveyors constitutes one of the practical ways for transporting mined material in an oil sands plant. "The presence of radon from uranium-bearing ores, waste and from backfill material introduced underground to provide ground support, work platform and waste disposal functions, requires that ventilation controls be established to maintain safe working level concentrations. One approach has been developed at Queen's University to quantify radon and radon daughter source level s and to estimate ventilation requirements necessary to maintain these safe levels.Knowledge concerning the sources of radioactive contaminants and their production quantities is of value for planning and design stages of ventilation control systems. For any given mine layout, radiation level estimates may be forecast and modified by ventilation network design where excessive production quantities may exist.Behaviour of Radon Gas in MinesRadon gas, produced from the decay of Ra-226 in a host medium, will diffuse through porous media. In areas adjacent to mine workings, radon will be liberated into the mine atmosphere. The rate of radon emanation is proportional to the rate at which radon is produced within the host material (a function of the ore grade of U308) , to the radon concentration gradient in the host pores and to the diffusion properties of the material.The radon source concentration is determined by the rate at which Rn-222 is produced by the decay of Ra-226, and by the emanating coefficient (E), or fraction of the radon which escapes from the source matrix and is free to diffuse through the pore spaces."

"For 25 chemical elements in electrostatically precipitated fly ash (Lingan coal-fired power station), concentration changes are studied as a function of increasing proportions of fines (ash particle diameter less than 45 micrometres). Elements that are involved when concentrations increase as the proportions of fines increase are likely to escape into the atmosphere. These are Th, U, As, S, P, Sb, Na, Ag, Zn, Pb, Ni, Ba, Sc, AI, Mo (and Bi, Ge, Ga, F and Li), i.e., more or less highly volatilized elements. Of the less volatilized metals such as Fe, Ca, Cu, Ti, K, Co, Mn (and lanthanides), certain portions presumably also escape as stack emissions. Diadochy and spinel formation in bottom slag is presented as an emission-reducing agent for certain metals.IntroductionThe Lingan coal-fired power generation plant, owned and operated by the Nova Scotia Power Corporation, produces annually about 140,000 metric tons of ash (the residual mineral content after burning coal). The tonnage is based on a 15 per cent average ash content of Cape Breton coal.For purposes of this report, samples of the hard, fused slag (bottom slag) that is accumulated at bottoms of boilers, and electrostatically precipitated fly ash (ep ash), were collected and investigated. Bottom slag is a minor component of the produced ashes.The ashes were surveyed and the presence of over 75 major, minor and trace elements is reported. From this survey, 25 elements were selected to establish elemental enrichment/depletion trends when the proportions of the less than 45 micrometre <45µm) fractions in ep ashes increase. The results are significant in that, taking the case of elemental enrichment, the elements involved are likely to escape into the atmosphere, i.e, highly volatilized elements. Depletion trends for elements are presumably associated with less volatilized elements during coal-firing. Quantification of the emission of atmospheric pollutants is not considered part of this work. ""Igneous"" minerals generated during coal combustion include spinels (found mainly in the bottom slag), quartz, glass and mullite."

"Mineral exploration is an expensive speculative venture and calls for optimization of sampling. Exploration is generally planned in grid pattern to be conducted in phased manner. The objective of any such campaign is to assess the quality, quantity and its reliability. The traditional estimation methods are unable to provide a means of calculating the degree of reliability. Application of mathematical models can quantify the precision of estimation and bring forth decision-making criteria at any stage.In this paper three statistical and geostatistical models, viz., Frequency, Probability, and Semi-variogram, have been employed to evaluate sequential exploration data of RampuraAgucha zinc-lead deposit. The optimization in exploration for a specific objective has been highlighted.IntroductionAny exploration campaign demands heavy resource investment starting from the collection of the first sample to the production of the first ton of ore. The best estimation would be if the entire orebody is taken out and sampled. However, this is neither possible, nor desirable. Drilling is the primary tool of geological sampling. It shares the major portion of the investment and, thereby, warrants critical analysis at every stage during the ongoing exploration projects.The exploration program should be conducted as a well planned scheme based on a sequential evaluation approach in a phased way to achieve a specific objective. It would then be possible to evaluate exploration data at the completion of each phase by employing computer-based mathematical techniques to quantify the precision of the estimate for fulfillment of objectives. The subsequent drilling program should be modified accordingly."

"In the past two to three years, all continuous mining machines at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, Lanigan Division, have been changed over to a new cutting pattern using 1 -inch- and 1-3/l6-inch-diameter self-sharpening pencil bits. The bits are arranged in a cone-type pattern across the face on 2 1/2 -inch and 3-inch spacing. The result is that the ore is removed by chipping and flaking. Previously, rap-lock bits were used, with the pattern being several bits in single rows at wide spacings. The cutting action was grinding and breaking.Besides improved penetration rates and lower bit costs, there are many other advantages. The ore size is much smaller, resulting in less wear and tear on conveyors and other associated equipment. Feeder-breakers are no longer routinely set up at the head end of every extensible belt, as the banana-shaped chunks of ore that used to require breaking are no longer produced. Also, less dust is generated by the cutting heads and fewer stops are required for bit changes. Even the mill operation has been improved, as fewer fines are produced.Further improvements are still sought after, but, all in all, the new cutting pattern is considered to be a giant step forward from the old method."

The quality and quantity of secondary deposits, which include tailings streams and tailings dams, are increasing around the globe. The tailings are already mined, available and liberated to such an extent that the recovery of a valuable product is highly economical in terms of CAPEX & OPEX. The most widely used process for the recovery of these valuable ultra-fine haematite iron particles is the Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation technique, originally developed by Dr. Jones over 55 years ago. Many of the original machines are still working today. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilities in terms of grade and yield of using sophisticated magnetic separation modules. All results and figures are obtained from test works, design- and engineering works. Two types of tailings have been identified for processing. Firstly, tailings that have already been deposited in a Tailings Storage Facility, and secondly, live tailings streams from an existing wet iron ore beneficiation plant. In both cases, the technical and practical results are shown along with relevant flow sheets and plant layouts. Finally, this paper highlights the total predicted power- and water consumptions, capital requirements and projected operating expenses. The results show that the operating costs are significantly lower than the mining and processing operations which are required for an equivalent amount of iron ore. The recovery % of iron depends on various factors but is within the 30–50% range, at an equivalent grade to the mainstream product. Another significant benefit is that the magnetic separation process is water positive, meaning that water is released rather than added in the process. The processing of secondary deposits will therefore result in an overall reduction in operating costs, an increase in product yield from a plant, extend the mine life and offer environmental benefits by reducing the tailings footprint and water usage.

"Overland conveyor systems to transport bulk materials from mines to processing plants or load-out stations have to be seriously considered as the viable alternative to truck and train haulage systems. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, conveyors with their electrical drives generally prove to be the least costly when operating and maintenance expenses are analyzed for the life of the installation.IntroductionOverland conveyor systems are now considered as one of the viable alternatives which should be closely investigated when a mining company and its engineers initiate studies on methods of transporting raw materials from a mine to a processing plant or rail load-out station.This paper will generalize the overland conveyor and compare it with alternative handling systems. Each installation must be carefully studied to determine the best route, type of foundations river crossings; amount of excavation work for cut and fill, maintenance roads, etc. No two locations are the same nor are the principles of operation of an overland conveyor the same as those of a normal plant or mine belt conveyor. The proper time and effort must be put into the study of the system to evaluate the costs for comparison with other systems.The length of the overland conveyor depends on the layout of the mine and plant and the topography of the terrain between the terminals. Individual lengths may be up to 20 km, and a series of conveyors may extend 100 km or more.Advantages of Overland ConveyorsThe main advantage of overland conveyors is the low operating and maintenance costs which will be realized over its years of operation. Although truck haulage probably will permit lower capital investment during the initial phases of the mine development when the annual capacities have not developed to the design level, their operating and maintenance costs will be considerably higher. When evaluating the total costs per ton of material to be handled during the expected life of the operation and the projected increases for diesel fuel versus electricity, overland conveyor systems will generally prove to be economically more viable."

"Cambior now holds a 49% interest in the Valdez Creek Placer, having acquired American Barrick&apos;s 23.125% interest in May 1990. At the same time, the company assumed the management of the operation and received environmental permits to divert the river. Plans are underway to divert the Valdez River in order to continue mining the deposit upstream, and to construct a new, higher capacity wash plant (by 60%) closer to the operations. Mining operations, which were suspended in October 1989 pending higher gold prices, resumed in August 1990. The mine is expected to produce 10000 ounces of gold in 1990and more than 80 000 ounces in 1991.IntroductionThe Valdez Creek Placer is located in the Valdez Creek mining district of Alaska on the western flank of the Clearwater mountain range, about 150 miles northeast of Anchorage by air (Fig. I) . The mine is accessible by air or by road.The mine is situated at an elevation of about 3000 ft and is isolated from towns and villages. Consequently, the mine site contains the facilities necessary to house and feed 135 people at any given time. The Valdez Creek Placer has 159 employees, including 130hourly and 29 salaried employees. The hourly employees are divided into three rotating teams. The daily schedule consists of two shifts of 12 hours, and each team works 14 days followed by seven days off, resulting in a weekly rotation of teams.The salaried employees work normal hours for ten consecutive days followed by four days off. A weekly rotation ensures continuity of services and management.Gold was first discovered at Valdez Creek in 1903, when a team of four men led by Peter Monahan left the village of Valdez to explore the area up the Susitna River, to the east of Mount McKinley. They discovered gold at the mouth of a creek that they immediately named Valdez Creek, in honour of their native town. In 1904, they discovered the Tammany Channel to the right of Valdez Creek. This was the beginning of a long period of mining in the area which continued until the beginning of World War II .In 1980, the Denali Mining Co. was formed. Geophysical work and drilling carried out through 1980 and 1981 led to the discovery of Channel A, a second channel which is older than the Tammany Channel. In 1983, Denali Mining optioned its claims to Camindex to explore, develop and mine the Valdez Creek property. A joint venture agreement was signed among Camindex, Talcorp, BCP Alaska (Barrick), Sum Resources (Cambior), Norfran and WGM to form Valdez Creek Mining Co., Inc., and production began in 1984. Valdez Creek Mining Co., Inc. (VCMC) was subsequently restructured and in 1989 was held by the following three companies: Camindex Mines Ltd. - 51070; Cambior Inc. - 25.875%; and American Barrick - 23.125%.VCMC is managed by a committee of the partners. Decisions made by the committee are subject to a 70% majority vote. Cambior receives its share of production in kind, and contributes in the same proportion to the expenses of the joint venture (VCMC)."

"Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi&apos;s (CMDIC) Concentrator Plant is located at 4300 meters above sea level, approximately 2000 kms north from Santiago, Chile. The concentrator has three grinding lines. Each one, Lines 1 and 2, have one SAG mill at the primary grinding stage followed by a secondary grinding and classification stage consisting of one ball mill, two hydrocyclone batteries and a sump with two pumps. Line 3 has one SAG mill (Gearless Mill Drive), followed by a secondary grinding and classification consisting two ball mills, four hydrocyclone batteries and a sump with four pumps. Average throughput for these three lines is 150 Ktons per day. Peak values of 180 ktons per day have been achieved.Since late 2008 and throughout 2009 and 2010, Operations and Automation areas developed an optimization program for the grinding process, considering the implementation of Model Predictive Controllers (MPC) for the three SAG mills, and later, extending MPC to the secondary grinding and classification stages. The implementation of a MPC solution was based on stability considerations (high variability of the SAG process, high interaction between sump level control and classification efficiency, etc), requirements for an automated and consistent operation, the need to maximize throughput under timevarying scenarios and, in the long term, optimization of grinding process considering Specific Energy Consumption, among other parameters. MPC solutions had proven control robustness and strong optimizing capabilities in terms of helping in discovering new operational points and so achieving all of the aforementioned goals.On the first stage of the program, MPC implementation considered identification of dynamical process control models based mainly on historical data, in order to know the impact of a group of Manipulated Variables over Controlled Variables. Also, the impact of measured Disturbance Variables was modeled in order to take into account the high impact and interaction of these variables over the processes. At the end of this stage, 4 controllers were successfully operating for the 3 SAG mills and the secondary grinding and classification process. In response to challenges made by the working group, the second stage of the development of control applications in the grinding process required to achieve a design and implementation of a solution capable of governing the milling process, in addition to stabilization and optimization of both processes (SAG milling and secondary grinding), to integrate from a point of view of process control and automation. Therefore, in the second stage, MPC performance was continuously monitored and optimized through advanced tuning, inclusion of more process models (with proper step tests), redefinition of specific optimization criteria and adjustment to new process needs.Finally, successful MPC implementation at Collahuasi has proved that fast development and deployment of process control solutions is possible and allows immediate process stability, higher throughput, specific energy consumption reduction, and successful product size control, among many others."

Gases rich in sulfur dioxide generated as a by-product of smelting and converting operations of copper concentrate contain selenium apart from zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, and arsenic. The gaseous stream is heat exchanged in waste heat boiler, dust collected in electrostatic precipitator followed by cleaning in reverse jet scrubber to remove fumes, halogens and fine dust before passing to DCDA Monsanto catalytic converter to produce commercial grade sulfuric acid. The gas cleaning section of the acid plant uses water to scrub the smelting gases. During scrubbing, precipitated solids, known as sludge, settles at the bottom of the reverse jet scrubber containing 30 to 40 wt% copper and selenium up to 40 wt% selenium. In the existing process, the sludge collected during scrubber cleaning process is directly recycled to the smelter for copper recovery. However, the selenium is expected to again vaporize due to high oxidation potential during smelting and converting, causing accumulation of selenium in sludge. In present investigation, a roasting process has been developed to recover the selenium from acid plant sludge before charging it to smelter for copper recovery. Selenium is associated with copper in acid plant sludge as copper selenide, as determined by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Thermodynamic and thermo-gravimetry study revealed that the copper selenide phase present in the sludge was amenable to oxidation at 600°C forming oxides of copper and selenium (Cu-Se-O). However, the dissociation of selenium from the copper oxide was made possible by sulfatation using sulfur dioxide between 450°C to 600°C, resulting into the formation of CuSO4(s) and SeO2(g). Lab scale experiments were carried out in vertical tubular furnace to determine the optimum roasting conditions with respect to roasting time, temperature and molar ratio of O2:SO2. Using these optimum conditions, selenium up to 90 wt. % in the form of SeO2 vapors could be recovered from the acid plant sludge in a large scale commercial roaster. Roasted sludge free from selenium and containing oxides and sulfates of copper could now be recycled in the smelter for copper recovery. INTRODUCTION There is an increasing demand for minor metals due to their use in innovative technologies. Similarly, the increase in demand for selenium is expected due to disruption in sectors related to renewable energy and photovoltaic battery. Selenium is a chalcogen and a non-metal with black or red crystalline appearance. Selenium is used in the glass industry to decolorize glass and to make red-colored glasses and enamels. It is also used in solar cells and as a photographic toner. Selenium is used as a brasses in stainless steel to improve its machinability. Selenium sulfide is used in anti-dandruff shampoos. In spite of the toxicity of its compounds, selenium is also an essential trace element for humans and animals. Selenium occasionally occurs free in nature, but more often occurs as selenides of iron, lead, silver and copper. There is an urgent need for the development of new methods for selenium recovery from the existing resources. Commercially, selenium is obtained only from anode mud produced during electrolytic refinery of copper.

"The article describes the analysis of methods and criteria of selectivity of optimal ore preparation schemes. Traditional criteria based on study of physical-mechanical properties of ores give the comparison of obtained figures with a reference standard or statistic data and the selection of the ore preparation scheme is made on a basis of a similar scheme from the existing production.Further on estimation is given to different criteria of the crushing selectivity, the new criterion is offered, the definition of which is done by results of an optical microscopy– the estimation of a valuable mineral release degree. The final estimation of the crushing process selectivity L? is performed by a calculation of a ratio of the valuable mineral free grains quantity in a desired size grade of a crushed material to the valuable mineral free grains quantity in a desired size grade of a raw product.Besides, optimality assessment of using the specific crushing unit is preliminary performed according to a maximum crushing degree of a material, however, the priority is given to the maximum selectivity criterion. The check of the proposed criterion was done when comparing the crushing of niobium bearing ores of the Vishnevogorskoye deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion L? showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) has the value of the selectivity criterion lower than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). For the crusher CC the criterion L? is 0.82 – 0.87 units, whereas for the crusher CIC – 1.43-1.755 units. "A representative composite fault-related landslide of the Corinth Gulf graben named “Panagopoula” is reported that considered to be one of the most prone to slope instability sites along the main motorway and railway connecting Athens with the city of Patras. The presence of tectonically highly sheared and weathered geological formations, including Alpine basement (mainly flysch) contributes to the site instability, triggered/reactivated by seismic activity and heavy rainfalls. Although a series of remedial measures have been already constructed, the inclinometer readings during the last twenty years time period show a continuous very slow movement which indicates that the landslide is still ""active"". This fact has resulted to divert the axes of the new motorway and railway through twin tunnels which are under construction. INTRODUCTIONThe spatial and temporal evolution of landslides in the case of structurally complex slopes is lithologically and often structurally controlled while their type and frequency are mainly related to tectonic and lithological anisotropy (Baron et al. 2005; Hradecky et al. 2007). The triggering mechanisms mainly include: (a) excessive rainfall generating high pore pressure and (b) strong earthquakes resulting in dynamic loading conditions at the failure surface. Data such as past earthquakes or the precipitation records are useful to be gathered when a landslide model is examined since they could act as a landslide triggering mechanism. Recording of the movement through surface and inclinometer measurements as well as combination of the above information with historical records of failure could lead to a more accurate estimation of the location of the failure surface and understanding of the landslide mechanism.Slope instability in the southern segment of the Gulf of Corinth, Northern Peloponnesus, Greece, is ubiquitous and ranges from deep-seated bedrock failure to secondary earth flows in recent deposits. In this part of Greece, the periodically induced landslide events triggered by heavy rainfall, earthquake and anthropogenic activity are closely related to active fault tectonics. The Gulf of Corinth is considered as a typical example of a relatively simple asymmetric half-graben with major border faults to the south and a flexure of the northern shore. Panagopoula landslide is located along the trace of a WNW trending normal fault (dipping northwards) (Figure 1). The area is considered to be one of those most prone to slope instability along the E95 motorway and railway connecting Athens with the city of Patras."

"The Corbin area of southeastern British Columbia has been a coal mining area since 1908. Byron Creek Collieries Ltd. Has operated its Coal Mountain Mine in this area from 1974 until the present. In February 1981, this company was purchased by Esso Resources Canada Ltd.Coal Mountain is structurally complex and standard computer algorithms are not applicable to model the overturned synclinal structures and faulted bedding surfaces. This paper discusses two approaches used by Esso Resources staff to model the geology of Coal Mountain.The first approach projects digitized cross-section data along trend to develop a large data base which correctly approximates the shape of the structure. The spatial orientation of the structure is corrected by merging the generated data set with drill-hole data. The second approach uses digitized cross-section and bench-plan geology to generate a block model of the coal reserve.HistoryThe Coal Mountain Mine, also known as the Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Ltd. is located 24 kilometres south of Highway 3 in southeastern B.C.In 1905, two American businessmen recognized the coal potential of the area during a horseback tour. The two businessmen, D.C. Corbin and E.J. Roberts, formed the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. to mine and market coal from their newly acquired 6075 hectares of coal licenses. By 1908, the town of Corbin was under construction, a 22.4-km rail spur was constructed from the mine to the main CPR line and the first underground mine began to produce coal. An open-pit operation was also developed at the 1828-metre elevation using a steam shovel loading into rail cars. The company operated continuously until 1935, when a lengthy strike forced suspension of operations.In 1943, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (now known as Cominco Ltd.) operated two surface mines to produce coal for its smelters at Kimberley and Trail, B.C. This operation ceased in 1948."

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co. and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behaviour of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-48N stope, 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behaviour of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modelled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modelling. In addition, a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.45-48N StopeThe 45-48N stope is located in the 21 ledge between the 6500 and 6650 levels and contains about 233 000 short tons of mineable ore. The orebody lies within the Homestake Formation and is very irregular being approximately 200 ft long and 75 ft wide. Between the 6500 and 6650 levels, it dips from 35 degrees to 60 degrees east with a near-vertical plunge to the south. Mineralization is characterized by arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite with minor gold. The contact between the Homestake and the overlying Ellison Formation creates a plane of weakness along localized graphitic layers. The footwall dips at approximately 60 degrees but between 100 ft and 120 ft above the 6650 level , the hanging wall flattens to almost 20 degrees causing a significant mining problem."

SIDBEC commenced detailed planning of major capital expenditures to install integrated steelmaking facilities in 1969. Today, less than IO years later, SIDBEC and its subsidiaries have completed major mining, concentrating, pelletizing, direct reduction ? electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting plants. The total cost of these projects was almost 1 billion dollars. The philosophy behind the project planning and the evolution of management control are explained. These extensive projects were undertaken during a period of exceptional inflation and a disturbed labour climate, but were nevertheless completed with only modest overruns, with good control of timetables and with exceptionally good start-up performance. Project planning, relations with consulting engineers, introduction of new technology, purchasing and field management and cost control are discussed.
