"Part 1 (CIM Bulletin, August 1991) of this article identified the limitations of the traditional modelling methods and demonstrated the approximations and errors introduced by their application to complex mining situations. The objective of Part 2 is to describe the evolution of new, proven technology which eliminates these deficiencies and provides precise and practical alternatives. These promote the use of realistic geological and mining shapes and eliminate altogether the rectangular approximations of traditional methods. Limitations of the Traditional MethodsThe limitations of the traditional modelling method s (viz. simple block modelling, gridded modelling and their more recent variations) were discussed in detail in Part I . These methods are all based on the use of rectangular discretization to represent the boundaries and volumes of ore deposits and mining excavations. As a result they are unsuited to the representation of nonrectangular geological complexities such as folding, faulting and irregular surfaces . They are equally unsuited to the representation of realistic excavation limits, particularly in the case of underground mining.Recently these methods, with limited variations in technique, have been applied to increasingly more complex geological and mining situations. The resulting potentials for error and conflict within the modelling pro cess were demon strated in Part I . The effects can be summarized as follows:• volume and boundary approximations introduced by therepresentation of irregular three-dimensional boundaries andvolumes by rectangular modelling elements ; • geostatistical errors and conflicts caused by neglect of the relationships between grade estimates and the geometric/ spatial aspects of irregular volumes and associated observations (samples), including an inability to produce precise estimates with meaningful confidence limits;• a compounding of these effects by using rectangular element sizes other than the geostatistical optimum, and by using differentelement sizes within a model; and• general inefficiencies introduced throughout the modelling pro cess by the requirement to represent geology, grade distribution and excavation limits with a singular modelling method and model."

"Transfer points on belt conveyors have long been a source of problems for both designers and users. Conveyors are generally given a low priority in new equipment layout, thus designers are often forced to compromise due to space limitations. Consequently, for this reason as well as for reasons of initial economics, many conveyors are supplied with less than adequate transfer points.Although not intended as a cure-all, a number of existing installations have been modified with the result that spillage has been reduced to a minimum and belt life has been extended. The most striking modification consisted of replacing conventional rigid frame idlers with five-roll catenary idlers.Although catenary idlers can be traced back to the early 1900s in North America, with a patent having been issued in Washington, D.C. as early as May 29, 1907, the practical application of this concept has only recently reached North America. Major installations include applications at St. Lawrence Cement in Oakville and Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, as well as belt conveyors at Stelco's Nanticoke plant and yard conveyors at Syncrude in Alberta. These installations were part of major capital expenditures for new facilities and included complete conveyor systems.However, this article will discuss the use of catenary idlers on existing rigid frame conveyors for the purpose of absorbing the energy of falling lumps, protecting conveyor belts and reducing spillage. We will deal specifically with an installation at Inco Metals Company in Sudbury, Ontario, where approximately 40 five-roll catenary idlers were installed on a 42-in.-wide belt conveyor handling ore located under the railroad car dumper at the Clarabelle Mill. Before-and-after photographs clearly show the tremendous improvement in the cleanliness of the location, and the savings in maintenance costs and extended belt life have prompted Inco to consider modifying other conveyors."

"A program of evaluation of in-mould electromagnetic stirring on the product of a straight-mould, billet continuous casting machine has been carried out. The effects on macrostructure, surface and internal quality, chemistry segregation and mechanical properties on carbon, low-alloy and resulphurized, free-machining steel billets and rolled bars are discussed. Operational aspects as a result of in-mould stirring are highlightedIntroductionA development program on electromagnetic stirring (EMS) in the mould of a continuous caster was started by Ferrco Engineering Limited in 1979, with the first experimental device being developed and installed at Lake Ontario Steel Company. As a result of these initial trials, new designs of in-mould EMS systems have been developed and are currently being used in continuous casters in North America and Europe. The rapid progress which has been made is in large measure due to the fruitful cooperation which has existed between the various parties, including Ferrco, the EMS equipment manufacturer, several operating plants and the University of Toronto.A brief review of some of the basic ' principles of electromagnetic stirring action on solidifying metal, and the landmarks of this process development, will explain the philosophy of this cooperation.From casting practice, it is well known that an equiaxed dendritic structure provides better' material properties than a columnar dendritic structure. Homogeneity of the equiaxed structure leads to better control of material properties, such as strength and ductility. Therefore, many efforts are being made to obtain this structure in continuous casting.The extent of the equiaxed zone is determined to a large degree by convective flow in the liquid. Fluid flow can fragment dendrites in the columnar zone, which then act as nuclei for grains in the equiaxed zone farther down the sump. This process is referred to as dendrite or grain multiplication."

SOME years ago the writer had the opportunity to plumb a number of mine-shafts, each of which presented various conditions and difficulties. This afforded the chance to compare several methods of shaft plumbing in the light of ease and rapidity. This comparison led to the development of an adaption of the Weisbach, or approximate alignment, method, to three wires in a single shaft. Professor Weisbach, some time prior to 1850, introduced his method of shaft plumbing by triangulation on but two wires, and was the first to show that a triangle of very narrow shape is the best for this purpose. THE WEISBACH METHOD The two-wire method, using a Weisbach triangle, is described in several .English text-books on mine surveying and is used frequently in various parts of the world, but in Canada it is almost unknown. The writer has described an example of this two-wire method (1), but a brief resumé here may clarify the explanation of its application to three wires. In this two-wire method, instead of endeavouring accurately to align the instrument with the wires, it is set only in approximate alignment, and the small angle formed at the instrument is measured. This is expressed graphically in Figure l, where C represents the position of the instrument and A and B the positions of the wires. The sides of the triangle are measured as well as the angle ACB, and the angles at B and A are found by applying the Sine Rule or the formula

A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. "Coal is rapidly becoming a major alternative to oil. According to the World Coal Study Final Report, total world coal trade could approach one billion tons annually by the year 2000. To facilitate the increased production and export market potential of the coal producing countries, advancements must be made to improve the transportation systems. Coal slurry pipeline systems could play a significant role in achieving these market forecasts.There are three major components to a coal slurry system the preparation plant, the pipeline and the dewatering plant. The experience and expertise gained from the Consolidation Coal Company system in Ohio, the Black Mesa system in Arizona and ETSI's Coal Evaluation Plant demonstrate that slurry pipeline technology is proven and available to meet the coal transport challenge.The costs of transporting coal by slurry pipeline can offer significant savings, as about 70 per cent of its costs are fixed. The reverse is true for railroads, where 75 to 80 per cent of the costs vary with inflation. All forms of transport-rail, barge and pipeline-will be required to move the massive volumes of coal. Coal slurry systems can provide a viable transport alternative.IntroductionThe importance of coal as a major alternative to oil is now well known and accepted throughout the world. Increasing oil prices over the last eight years have had a serious effect on national economics, particularly in those countries that are heavily dependent on oil. Coal can replace oil as the principal fuel source which could support world economic growth over the next two decades. This is the main conclusion of the World Coal Study (WOCOL) Final Report, published in May 1980.The product of that report was a result of considerable deliberation by key industry leader s and energy experts. The underlying message of the World Coal Study is that our energy and economic problems can be faced with confidence if coal use doubles by the early 1990s and triples by 2000, and if steam coal trade expand s considerably."

"IntroductionSeveral new smelting processes have been proposed and developed during the last 20 years. This has been true, in particular, for copper smelting technology. The important impulses for the advances in this field have been the recent demands regarding the environmental protection, energy saving and improved utilization of the metals contents of deposits, in particular that of complex raw materials.The methods developed more recently for pursuing these objectives have been outlined in several papers. In some of them the advantages and drawbacks of certain developments have been stressed. These documents are of great importance for assessing the different processes. The following paper tries to explain some details of the cyclone smelting process taking into consideration a few of these well-known presentations. The effectiveness of operation of the cyclone smelting process indicates that this process presents a significant achievement when compared with other conventional methods.The application of the CONTOP smelting cyclone range s beyond the field of copper metallurgy or the smelting of sulphide concentrates with the aid of oxygen. The research work carried out in the pilot plant of KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in Cologne-Porz also includes the recovery of the metal contents of intermediate products and processing of smelter residues which have to be converted in a disposable stat e, free of environmental pollution. "Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

"The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has recently initiated several incentive programs to encourage and facilitate the development of new mines in northwestern Ontario. Some are privatized out to consultants and contractors. The status of three of these programs will be reviewed in this paper.IntroductionOne of the main objectives of the Mineral Resources Group of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources is to encourage and assist mineral exploration and the development of new mines in the Province. Programs to accomplish this objective are largely carried out through two Branches in the main office (in Toronto), the Mineral Resources Branch and the Ontario Geological Survey, and also a number of regional field offices scattered across Ontario.The function of the Mineral Resources Branch is to identify and administer effective policies that will ensure maximum benefits to the Province from mineral resource extraction.One of the most important factors in ensuring effective exploration in the Province is the availability of a good geosciences data base from which to work. It is the responsibility of the Ontario Geological Survey to develop and continually update this data base, providing, to both the public and private sector, an inventory and analysis of the geology and mineral deposits of the Province.The main functions of the regional field offices are to provide technical data and advice to exploration companies and prospectors, to encourage and assist exploration, and to provide information and general assistance to producing and developing properties to facilitate resource development and extraction. This is accomplished through the offices of the mineral resource coordinators and resident geologists. In northwestern Ontario, these field offices are located at Thunder Bay, Kenora, Red Lake and Sioux Lookout.To accomplish their objectives, the Ontario Geological Survey and the regional field offices carry out regular, ongoing geoscience and other mineral resource programs, under their base funding."

"The need for monitoring the effect of changes in ground stresses due to mining in hard rock has existed for many years. The Mining Research Laboratories of CANMET, EMR have developed a new tool which monitors with high precision the radial deformation in boreholes. The result is the Mining Research Laboratories strain monitoring system (MSMS) which uses the highly stable and very sensitive vibrating wire principle to monitor deformations in relatively large boreholes, e.g. 76 mm to 153 mm diameter.The vibrating wire is strung across a relatively large proving ring and operates at a frequency between 600 to 1800 Hz. The read-out system is based on continuous vibration.The ring is installed with a hydraulic tool and brought into contact with the surrounding rock through precisely machined and guided wedges. The resolution of the system is in the neighbourhood of 4 x 10-4 min/ Hz. The data collection can be carried out with a portable read-out unit and provisions are available for automatic data collection. Stresses may be calculated from strain readings.The system was tested in cooperation with the Centre de recherches minérales at the Niobec Mine in Quebec for the purpose of monitoring the effects of drill drift development and slope mining on surrounding ground stresses.After access was available to the site, 153 mm diameter holes were drilled for the determination of in situ ground stresses. These holes were then used to install the strain monitoring system. The effect of drill drift development and production blasting in stopes C-203-13 and C-203-15 on ground stress distribution could be observed clearly.The horizontal relaxation in the core of a pillar which occurred during mining of adjacent rooms was between 0.082 mm to 0.111 mm. Calculations of stresses from these deformations indicate that the rock material is still in an elastic condition.Roctest of Montreal has obtained a license on the manufacturing and distribution rights. A patent has been registered and CANMET will assist in installation of the MRL strain monitoring system and the interpretation of records."

"A solid flows out of a bin provided that the outlet is sufficiently large so that stable obstructions to flow do not develop. The geometry and surface finish of a bin and the construction of the feeder determine the type of flow pattern which then develops within the bin. The pattern, in turn, affects the uniformity and consistency of the stream, segregation, caking, degradation, live capacity and the action of level measuring devices.In most bins now in operation, material flows toward the feeder through a channel which forms within the stationary solid. This is referred to as funnel flow. If the hopper of the bin is sufficiently steep and smooth and the feeder capable of drawing material across the whole area of the outlet, all the solid flows whenever the feeder is in operation; this is referred to as mass flow. Mass-flow bins are usually far superior to funnel-flow bins; their initial cost is also usually higher.The paper describes the design criteria used in deter-mining the minimum bin outlet needed for flow and the bin geometry needed for mass flow."

"The influence mechanism of chlorite on the flotation of pyrrhotite was investigated through flotation tests, Zeta potential measurements, optical microscope photos, solution ion measurements and absorption measurements. It is observed that, the addition of chlorite influences the flotation of pyrrhotite seriously. The IEP (isoelectric point) of pyrrhotite and chlorite is 7.6 and 4.3 respectively, in the condition of slight alkalinity, both pyrrhotite and chlorite are negatively charged, and the hetero-aggregation will not occur. With the existence of oxygen in solution, the iron ions are dissolved from pyrrhotite surface because of the oxidation of pyrrhotite during pulp conditioning. The dissolved iron ions adsorb onto the surface of chlorite in the forms of iron hydroxyl and iron hydroxide, and the adsorption results in the opposite charge of chlorite surface. As a result, the hetero-aggregation between pyrrhotite and chlorite occurs. The adsorption of chlorite changes the surface property of pyrrhotite and restricts the adsorption of amyl xanthate onto pyrrhotite surface, and then decreases the flotability of pyrrhotite.INTRODUCTIONIn sulfide ores processing, magnesium silicate bearing gangue minerals often report to the concentrate causing downstream processing problems as well as increased smelting costs. Talc,chlorite and serpentine are gangue minerals commonly encountered in complex sulfide ores (Engel, Middlebrook, & Jameson, 1997; Pietrobon et al., 1997; Witney & Yan, 1997; Chen, Grano, Sobieraj, & Ralston, 1999a, 1999b; Bremmell, Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005; Senior & Thomas, 2005; Wang, Somasundaran, & Nagaraj, 2005; WieseHarris & Bradshaw, 2007). All of them are characterized with uniform crystal structures consisting of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron and magnesium-oxygen octahedron. The magnesium-oxygen octahedron layers are broken during the liberation of serpentine to expose the magnesium-oxygen bonds with strong ionicity and hydration, which results in natural hydrophilicity of serpentine. In water, the hydroxyl on serpentine surface ruptures and dissolves into the aqueous phase while the Mg2+ remains, resulting in surface positive charge (Tao, 2012). As serpentine has a positive potential at alkaline condition, it is therefore likely that it will attach through electrostatic attraction to the negatively charged mineral surface and reduce both the flotation rate and recovery of target minerals (Lu et al., 2011). For talc, characterized as good natural hydrophobicity, the liberation comes from the interlaminar fracture to remain molecular bonds on surface with weak hydration. Being naturally hydrophobic, talc easily reports to flotation concentrates, thus reducing concentrate grade (Shortridge, Harris, Bradshaw, & Koopal, 2000; Beattie, Huynh, Kaggwa, & Ralston, 2006). Meanwhile, both molecular bonds and magnesium-oxygen bonds are exposed on chlorite surface when liberation occurs, resulting in moderate natural hydrophobicity between serpentine and talc (Tao, 2012). And thus the mechanisms of influence of chlorite on sulfide ores are more difficult to study."

To meet an increasing demand for minerals, mining operations are moving to ever more remote regions. The lack of a local energy supply and infrastructure, coupled with social and regulatory demands for lowered environmental impact of mining operations, presents an opportunity for a seemingly unlikely competitor ? a nuclear power plant. The Modular Pebble Bed Reactor concept, currently in various stages of research and development around the world, offers a high degree of reliability and safety with minimal consequences for the local or global environment. The passive safety features of this design eliminate the need for the extensive active safety systems that add significantly to the cost of current water-cooled reactors. With the MPBR, as with all nuclear plants, there are no appreciable quantities of waste products released to the environment during normal operations. In contrast with conventional reactor designs, the MPBR would also remain radiologically safe even under the most severe abnormal circumstances. The key to the design is the fuel element. Enriched uranium microspheres are coated with various layers of pyrolytic carbons and silicon carbide to form a highly-temperature resistant particle that effectively retains all fission products. These particles are mixed with graphite and formed into 6 cm pebbles. A randomly packed vessel of such pebbles forms the reactor core through which helium is circulated as a coolant. Computer models and tests performed on actual pebble bed reactors confirm that fuel failure temperatures are not reached even during the most severe conceivable loss of coolant accident. The reactor drives a gas turbine cycle with resulting efficiencies as high as 48%, comparable to natural gas-fired units. The low price of uranium fuel and low maintenance requirements translates into competitive operating costs. However, high capital costs prevent the MPBR from competing with natural gas in most markets. In remote applications where no fossil supplies are readily available, the playing field is more level. This paper summarizes the features of two of the more promising candidates for remote applications and discusses the strengths of the MPBR from the perspectives of fuel supply and environmental impact.

Despite anecdotal evidence to the contrary, the mining industry is not in decline. Rather, the world?s largest mining companies are among the most consistently profitable companies in any industry. In many cases, profitable mining companies have been built around a few large scale, long life mines. These criteria for success ? size and long life ? have led to the current preference for deposits that can be exploited using open pit methods. However, developments in the science of block caving have resulted in this mining method achieving costs and productivities that are competitive with the largest open pits, while achieving widespread applicability. One implication of the low costs and widespread applicability of block caving is that some current open pits are possibly too deep.

"Wave propagation studies across jointed rocks have significance in the fields of rock mechanics and geophysics. The passage of a seismic wave induces strains in rocks and often, these strains are of low magnitudes except at the vicinity of source. These low magnitude strains are generally in the elastic range and hence elastic constants necessary for the design and analysis of strength of rock mass, can be derived from wave velocities. Measurement of travel time velocities and measurement of resonance frequencies are the two methods usually adopted for obtaining wave propagation velocities.Resonant column apparatus measures wave velocities from the resonant frequencies obtained during testing. Depending on the type vibration applied, torsional or flexural, shear and compression wave velocities are secured. By varying the amplitude of vibrations applied, various strain levels can be introduced and corresponding resonant frequencies and wave velocities can be calculated. The resonant column experiments were performed on a model material, hardened Plaster of Paris (POP) samples, in laboratory. The paper explains the preparation of samples and the working mechanism of resonant column apparatus along with the estimation of wave velocity from resonant frequency. The numerical simulation of resonant column apparatus using distinct element method and its validation with the experimental results are presented in the paper.A distinct element code is usually used to simulate the movement of materials with intersecting discontinuities. Finite rotations and displacements of individual blocks representing the material are permitted and new contacts between the blocks are identified as the calculation progresses. Three dimensional Distinct Element Code (3DEC), the software intended for the numerical simulation of rock engineering projects, can well simulate the behavior of jointed rocks under static and dynamic loading conditions. The numerical simulation of resonant column apparatus has been performed with 3DEC considering its efficiency in modeling jointed rocks.The numerical modeling of the resonant column apparatus with application of torsional and flexural vibrations to the sample is elaborated in the paper. The response of samples to a range of frequencies is obtained and the frequency that induces maximum displacement in the sample is measured as the resonant frequency, for any particular strain level. The displacements measured at various points of the sample during application of vibrations are compared and presented. The numerical modeling of resonant column apparatus with an intact sample (without joint) and a sample with a joint incorporated are explained at a particular strain level. The resonant frequencies obtained from laboratory experiments and numerical simulations are compared and illustrated. It has been found that resonant frequencies obtained using numerical and laboratory experiments are in good comparison and can be extended for various strain levels and sample conditions."

Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a valuable sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) can be used to identify sufficient particles of a specific mineral phase for reliable statistics determining a mean value for each species with 95% confidence intervals (1). Using the region of interest (ROI) facility in the Tof-SIMS software, a mass spectrum from each particle, at 1-2 monolayer sensitivity, is recorded and stored. This analysis is reported for a chalcopyrite / pyrite / sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes in order to study transfer of copper from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery. Analysis from mineral selection based on specific ToF-SIMS signals (eg. Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, Fe/Cu) indicated no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the ToF-SIMS imaging data identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from mass spectra recorded at each of 256x256 pixels in a selected area of particles. PCA is a better method of selecting minerals due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The method has been extended to samples from an operating plant again with excellent phase recognition and diagnostic surface chemistry.

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

The use of roof bolting gave promise of substantial economic benefits to Continuous Miner operations at Michel Colliery. As the first step in the adoption of bolting, 142 anchorage tests, employing six types of anchor shells, were made in three mines. Significant differences were found in the anchorage capabilities of the various shells and the various roof rocks. Introduction S PORADIC attempts at roof bolting had been made at Michel Colliery over a period of ten years. Results were indifferent or inconclusive. A concerted effort was not made, because a compelling need for bolting did not exist. By 1962, however, the advent of Continuous Miners had brought a new significance to roof bolting and, at the same time, the increasing price and scarcity of mine timber made bolting materials more competitive in cost. In 1987, John Schloen published a survey and analysis of copper electrorefining tank room data. Following this paper, a series of copper electrorefining surveys have been conducted and presented at each of the Copper-Cobre meetings over the past 20+ years (1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013). For each of these surveys, William Davenport has been key driving force in the collection and analysis of data. To honour Professor Davenport’s contribution to copper processing, a review of the data was conducted. Historic trends and possible future technologies are discussed.
