In the world of large scale open pit mining, the majority of a mines operating cost is tied to the removal and transportation of the overburden waste material. Typically, many large haul trucks are employed to transport this overburden from each excavating face. The trucks transfer the waste material from deep within the pit to waste dumps on the surface incurring significant costs in operators, road construction and maintenance, vehicle maintenance staff and support facilities, fuel, tires, and spare parts, as well as the capital cost of the truck fleet itself. In addition, the haulage of the actual mined material carries similar operational costs. In both cases, these costs grow as the mine face advances and pit haulage distances increase. Reducing truck haulage is one key to the success of the Dual Truck Mobile Sizer (DTMS). Being the world?s first fully mobile truck dump station, transportation costs can be significantly reduced as the mine face advances. Furthermore, when used in conjunction with a shiftable face conveyor and a mobile overland hopper, substantial cost savings can be achieved. The mobility of the system allows for the considerable reduction in the haul truck fleet. Overall mine site emissions levels are greatly reduced by the fleet elimination, as well as keeping the majority of the hauls on a flat grade within the pit. Emission levels on a typical truck will dramatically spike as the angle and the length of the haul are increased. Moreover, comparing diesel engines versus electric powered conveyors to move the material contributes to the realized savings.

Attracting and retaining workers in mining industry has become an uphill battle to many mining companies. As workers with significant experience retire, it is getting more difficult to attract not only new workers but also top talent to the mining industry to replace professionals exiting the workforce. To make matters worse, students’ enrolment in the post-secondary mining programs in Canada and USA is continuously declining year after year for reasons not directly linked to job market. This raises a question of how can the future needs of mining be met? This paper focuses on avenues for collaboration of industry and educational institutions to meet the current and future needs of mining. It provides effective approaches that mining institutes can engage with program advisory committees, role of the mining industry in supporting both faculty and students, how to harness the benefits of diverse workforce in the country and use of innovative technologies to attract young workers in mining. This work presents Human Resources (HR) professionals with tools that they can use to hire and retain skilled workers with strong interest to work in the mining industry. It also provides HR professionals with an opportunity to re-evaluate their restructuring practices during economic downturns as they reduce number of employees on temporary or permanent basis. The paper stresses the need of working together of the mining stakeholders including mining industry, academic institutions, First Nations’ communities and provincial(state) and federal governments to meet the current and future demands of mining as the industry experiences shortage of labour and low students’ enrolment in post-secondary mining programs. It is shown that mining educational institutes can enhance their programs and recruitments through establishing a better communication with all stakeholders. This communication can be facilitated by creating a national advisory board, to work with all mining programs at the national level for sustainable mining.

The loss of fluid to the formation adjacent a fracture governs the areal extent of the fracture and the success of hydraulic fracturing as a production stimulation technique. The three flow mechanisms which control this loss are the result of the viscosity of the fracturing fluid and the permeability of the formation to the fracturing fluid, its wall building properties, and the combined effects of viscosity and compressibility of the reservoir fluid. The effects of these flow mechanisms can be evaluated in terms of a fracturing fluid coefficient, the fundamental concepts of which are developed in the paper. The fracturing fluid coefficient, which may be used in calculating the areal extent of fracturing, affords a direct measure of the effectiveness of fracturing fluids. The area of hydraulically created fractures is in-creased as the coefficient is de-creased. The fifteen-fold variation noted in this coefficient for the commercially available fracturing fluids tested resulted in a six-fold difference m the calculated areal extent of the fracture system.

Discovered in 1952, the deposits have been explored by diamond drilling on and near a group of islands in lake Nipissing and from under-ground workings. The ore mineral is a uranian pyrochlore. It occurs in breccia zones in association with calcite, apatite, a?cmite, feldsiiars, biotite, magnetite, sulphides, and fluorite in varying amounts. The pyrochlore concentrations occur in a steeply-dipping gneiss series with some crystalline limestone. Trends indicate a ring structure 114 miles in diameter. The main ore zone shows evidence of repeated brecciation and a succession of replacements .giving rise to a complex of rock types. Pegmatite and lamprophyre dykes cut the ore as do calcite-fluorite veins and later faults with small displacements. Columbium and uranium occur al-most exclusively in pyrochlore, but the proportions vary. There is no tantalum and only small amounts of titanium.

Geological assessment of active mine faces enables ore grade control, geological modelling and exploration planning. Monitoring of the mine advancement at every drill-blast-muck cycle allows for effective production management. However, geological assessments are performed infrequently due to the need to travel to active mine faces, and detailed surveys to map the mine progress are performed at the end of the month. Instant Mine Modeller (iMM) is a portable ruggedized stereo-vision system that creates photo-realistic three-dimensional models of underground mine faces on-site. The 3D models are generated automatically within minutes and can be viewed underground and annotated with geological information. The overall ore percentages of the face are calculated automatically for grade control. Annotated 3D models are located in the mine coordinate system and can be imported into mine management systems. iMM allows for daily monitoring of the mine progress and geology, and for re-visiting the mine virtually as it existed. iMM has been deployed in an underground hard rock mine for 18 months, and it effectively brings the underground work face into mine management offices enabling the right decisions at the right time. iMM has demonstrated benefits to various mine processes including grade control, geological mapping, 3D photo-realistic as-built and production volume.

"This paper focusses on the strength or capacity of cable bolts and introduces a new perspective for cable bolt design by demonstrating that mining-induced stress changes may affect cables in a detrimental manner. The concept underlying a novel cable bolt pull-out resistanceor bond capacity model is described and its practical significance is demonstrated by application to a simple two dimensional scenario of a fall-of-ground.A number of practical implications emerging from the application of this model are discussed to provide guidance to ground control personnel jar improving cable bolt support systems in mining applications. These include cable layout optimization, use of cable pre-reinforcements, assessment of embedment length requirements, need for plated cables (or straps), use of bird-caged cables (or buttons), and grout quality issues.IntroductionDuring the last decade, cable bolting has become a standard support technique in mining for handling wide spans, reinforcing are passes, preventing or reducing dilution of ore in marginally stable stopes, and for many other rock support need s.In its infancy, many deficiencies in cable bolt supports resulted from improper installation techniques and, in particular, grout quality control problems and the use of empty breather tubes (Goris, 1990). The development of special grout pumps and fail proof placement procedures (Oliver, 1992; Bourchier and O'Flaherty, 1992) have eliminated many of these early problems. Nevertheless, there are still situations where cables seem to lose their capacity during mining, and in these cases the cables do not provide the expected and needed ground support. In some instances, cables perform extremely well, whereas in others the same support layout and quality of support installation seem to be insufficient, allowing falls-of-ground or progressive cavings to occur."

MR. J. J. McIntyre (International Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., and McGi1livray Creek Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., Coleman, Alta): Mr. Burrough's excellent paper, Metallurgical Coals of the Crowsnest Area, seems especially timely now, when the need for developing iron industries in the west, as well as in the east, is receiving so much attention. His -thorough review of the 'coking' industry is an especially valuable contribution, along with which the following brief remarks on coking in the Crowsnest Pass area of British Columbia and Alberta may be in order. When the Crowsnest Pass line of the Canadian Pacific railway was built there were great expectations for the non-ferrous metal industry; quite a number of smelter's were al-ready in operation in British Columbia and the northwestern United States, and further expansion was confidently expected. The suitability of the medium-volatile coking coals of the Pass for making metallurgical coke had been recognized from the time the fields were first explored. By the time the mines were fairly well developed there was already a market to war-rant the building of coking plants, and a common belief that expansion of the market would require a large coking industry. The first coke production was from plants built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, Ltd., at Fernie, B.C. in 1903, and the International Coal and Coke Company, Ltd., at Coleman, Alberta. These plants were followed by others built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, at Michel, B.C., by West Canadian Collieries, Ltd., at Lille, Alberta, and by Leitch Collieries, Ltd., at Passburg Alberta, and by a plant at Hosmer, B.C.

Preservation of groundwater quality is a major environmental concern. The disposal of hazardous material from urban waste dumps, milling wastes in tailings ponds, and industrial wastes in injection wells may contaminate potential sources of potable groundwater. The containment or migration of contaminants in the subsurface depends on bedrock characteristics and type of overlying sediments. Fractured bedrock and permeable sediments that may provide pathways for the transport of potentially harmful contaminants should be avoided when selecting a disposal site. The role of borehole geophysics in hazardous waste-site investigations is reviewed in three categories: (I) site selection; (2) determination of the extent of contamination at existing sites; and (3) long-term monitoring of migration of contaminants. In the first category, borehole geophysical techniques developed for lithology and fracture identification, and for porosity determination, provide some of the necessary information for understanding the subsurface hydrogeology. Lithological information can be obtained from gamma-ray, electrical resistivity, induction, magnetic susceptibility, and sometimes induced polarization logs; fracture detection and characterization can be accomplished with the use of caliper, density, resistivity, temperature, and acoustic televiewer logs. Estimates of porosity are derived primarily from neutron-neutron, resistivity, density, and soniclogs. Borehole geophysical techniques used in water quality determinations include self-potential, fluid resistivity, Eh (redox potentials) and pH measurements, and these can be used to map the extent of contamination at an existing waste site. Cross borehole and borehole-to-surface electrical methods can also be used in this application. Long-term monitoring of contaminant migration in boreholes can be accomplished with techniques that respond to changes in electrical conductivity, temperature and fluid chemistry caused by the presence of contaminants.

It is well-known that Saskatchewan has the world’s richest uranium deposits and advanced processing technologies. Unlike the Saskatchewan deposits, complicated mineralogy is common for other places in the world. Mineralogy dictates the process. Mineral Processing at the Saskatchewan Research Council has been working with the uranium industry worldwide since its inception to develop effective processing technologies to suit the unique mineralogy of each deposit. This paper reviews the research and development of uranium processing technologies in the current major uranium production areas such as Canada, as well as the potential development regions like Argentina and Sweden. Acidic and alkaline leaching processes, as well as by-product recovery technologies are discussed based on mineralogy.

"Radium is selectively leachable from uranium ores with various types of lixiviants. Among a number of lixiviants tried on Midwest Lake uranium ore, KCl provided the highest per cent of radium extraction (60%-65%). Leach results further confirmed that a certain portion of Ra is not amenable to KCl leaching. More than 99% of the dissolved radium could be removed by treating the KCl leach liquor with barite or with radium selective complex resin (XFS-43230 resin of Dow Chemical Inc.) or by precipitating as RaBaSO4. Uranium leachings from the Ra-preleached uranium ores indicate that radium leaching prior to uranium may be applied as an extension to the conventional or alternative (i.e. acid chloride) leaching process of uranium ores in order to yield environmentally acceptable tailings (in terms of radium in the solids).IntroductionAt present, radium is considered as an environmental issue, particularly for uranium ore mine mill operations, rather than a commercial commodity. Radium was once a highly priced commodity ($180/mg during the first great war) but now it hardly has any commercial value. Its principal applications were in the field of cancer treatment and in the manufacturing of lwninous dials for watches. Nowadays readily-available synthetic radioisotopes are finding applications in place of radium.Because of scarcity and high toxicity, further commercial applications have never been explored.Radium was first discovered and extracted from uranium ore by P. Curie, M. Curie and G. Bement in 1898. Radium is widely distributed in nature but in exceedingly minute quantities. It is one of the daughter products of uranium or thorium and its maximum concentration is 3.3 x 10-7 part/part of U(21). Because of its short half-life (approximately 1620 years) in a geological time scale, its occurrence in nature as a distinct mineral is most unlikely.The details of the original radium leaching process developed by the Curies and Bernont are in the literature. This process essentially involved the roasting of uranium ore with caustic. carbonate followed by sulphuric acid leaching. The precipitated RaSO4 and BaS04 were treated with boiling Na2CO3 to convert them into the corresponding carbonates which later were dissolved in HCI. RaCI2 and Ba02 were separated and concentrated from the chloride liquor by fractional crystallization. But, in the course of time several modifications were made or proposed to the original process. Regardless of the process employed 226Ra extraction from the uranium ore was seldom better than 90%, and further as much as 20% 2URa loss took place during the concentration and purification process."

"A pilot shaft furnace was operated for one year at Steep Rock to produce special high-grade products from coarse ore, using lignite as fuel. The furnace is 10 ft in diameter and 60 ft high. When operated to heat coarse Steep Rock ore to drive off combined water and give a 64-per-cent-Fe product, the fuel consomption was 900,000 Btu's per long ton of product. The furnace was run in this way from September 1966 to January 1967 to establish the technique of feeding and discharging the furnace and controlling the gas composition and temperature. The furnace is similar in operation to a lignite water gas producer containing a large proportion of catalytic iron oxide. Steam injection is used to control the temperature. The product was tumbled in a rotary trommel to stabilize it. The resulting fines could be fed to the conventional pellet plant at Steep Rock. The furnace was next operated to make 77-per-cent-Fe metallized coarse ore. Several major modifications in de-sign were made and the furnace was successfully operated for short periods to maintain the required conditions to remove 75 per cent of the oxygen from the ore to give a 75-per-cent-reduced product at a grade of 77 per cent iron. The furnace cooling zone was operated under positive pressure, with internai alkaline water sprays to cool the charge. The product was discharged from the open bottom of the furnace without serions reoxidation. The metallized ore was magnetically separated from the discharge. Most of the charred lignite discharged along with the ore is re-cycled. Fuel requirement was 11,000,000 Btu's per long ton of product. This metallized coarse ore is intended for blast furnace feed. A short test run was carried out to establish the conditions for making a highly reduced melting stock for steel furnaces. To achieve 90 per cent reduction and over 90 per cent Fe, the furnace must be slowed down so that the production rate is about one-half the rate when making a 75-per-cent-reduced metallized product. Fuel requirement is 15,000,000 Btu's per long ton of product. The simple shaft furnace developed is similar to the top half of a blast furnace, with some major modifications to allow discharging into the open air. This Low Temperature Blast Furnace program has been technically successful and has resulted in making data available for the design of a commercial plant. Study of the commercial feasibility of large-scale production of metallized coarse ore at Steep Rock is still continuing."

"The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition f or new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps, Saskatchewan. The findings suggest that such initiatives could result in substantial excess capacity and the dissipation of monopoly rents. In summary, given the market structure of the industry, it is unlikely that the employment and economic effects associated with industry expansion will offset the loss in national welfare attributable to rent dissipation.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to discuss the potential impact of inter-provincial competition for new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. The ramifications of such competition are potentially severe: given that the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which we purportedly possess a significant degree of market power(1), it is important that sound supply management practices are followed. "This paper describes the Sasol coal liquefaction process, as used in South Africa. It covers coal supply, coal gasification, gas purification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the major utility systems involved and the economics of the process.IntroductionThe Sasol coal liquefaction process is based on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which are in turn obtained by gasification of coal with steam and oxygen. The process is shown schematically in Figure I.The first step in the process is coal preparation, in which the coal is crushed and screened to a 3-50 mm size for gasification on one side and to -3 mm size for steam and power production on the other. Oxygen needed for coal gasificatoin is produced in the air separation plant.Coal is gasified under pressure by steam and oxygen in the Lurgi gasification plant, where raw, impure gas is produced . The raw gas is first washed in a scrubber with a circulating gas liquor, heat is then recovered from it in a waste heat recovery boiler and the gas is further cooled for purification. Water-insoluble materials (tar oils) in the gas liquor are separated from aqueous solution and sent to tar refining for the recovery of tar products. The aqueous portion of the gas liquor goes to a Phenosolvan solvent extraction process, where phenols and ammonia are recovered. Water then proceeds to the effluent treatment plant.The scrubbed and cooled raw gas goes to a Rectisol gas purification plant, where all components other than hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane are removed as completely as possible by absorption in refrigerated methanol. The acid gases (CO2, H2S) stripped from the methanol in the Rectisol unit are processed in a Stretford plant for recovery of sulphur. Regenerated methanol is returned to the process. The purified synthesis gas is passed to the fluidized-bed Synthol reactors, where Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions take place.The synthesis products are recovered in a product recovery unit as separate streams of decant oil containing higher-molecular- weight hydrocarbons, light oil comprised of lower-molecular- weight species, the aqueous stream containing water solubles, a C3/C4 stream, a C2 stream , a methane stream and a hydrogen-rich stream. Most of the hydrogen is recycled to the Synthol reactors; a major portion of the methane is reformed to hydrogen and carbon monoxide for recycle; the C2 fraction goes to an ethylene plant; and liquid streams proceed to the product refinery.The product refinery is used to upgrade and purify the Synthol products to specification fuels and chemicals.Sasol l, the first coal liquefaction plant in South Africa , was built in 1955. It is still operating and has a product output of about half a million tonnes per year. The Sasol II plant is in a commissioning stage and will be in full operation in 1981. It is about five times the size of Sasoll. It uses over 12 million tonnes of coal and produces more than 2 million tonnes of saleable products annually (1,2,3). The Sasol llI plant, which is a mirror image of Sasol II, is under construction and scheduled for completion in 1983."

A brief description is given of the process used by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited to recover cobalt metal from nickel-cobalt sulphides. A description of the equipment with the operating conditions is presented with an evaluation of the corrosion test results for various stainless steels and other acid resistant materials for the part of the process involving the sulphuric acid leaching of nickel-cobalt sulphide slurry under air pressure. SINCE 1954 the Sherritt Gordon ammonia leach process has been used at Fort Saskatchewan to recover nickel metal, copper sulphides and cobalt-nickel sulphides from nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. 'To develop a process for recovering cobalt and nickel from the cobalt-nickel sulphides, studies were carried out in the Sherritt Gordon laboratory and pilot plant and, late in 1957, continuous acid leaching of sulphides was started in the refinery. "Full-scale sections of three different types of Grade 483 line pipe have been evaluated extensively. The variations in chemical composition, optical microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and Charpy impact toughness with specimen orientation and location were determined. Significant variations in several properties, notably Charpy shelf energy, impact transition temperature, inclusion content and ferrite grain size, were observed for different locations in the pipes. The results indicate that current specifications call for test samples for the most conservative locations, except for impact tests. Minimum Charpy impact values generally occur at the II2-width location, which may be a more appropriate specified test location than the present I/4-width location. The anisotropy of impact toughness, and the importance of low sulphur content and inclusion shape control for adequate toughness in the transverse/rolling-direction orientation were demonstrated. The orientation of impact specimens is critical for spiral-weld pipe, and the current specification test is non-conservative in that it can give results which are two to three times higher than the minimum value for the steel.IntroductionThis report presents the results of an extensive metallurgical evaluation of three different Grade 483 line-pipe steels. The sample material came from full-scale sections of line pipe, which represented current commercial practice at the time of manufacture (1975-1977). Since then, significant improvements have been made in the manufacturers' procedures for producing skelp and pipe, and the line-pipe specifications have been revised. Hence, the information in this report is dated in terms of current design, but it is unique and significant in several respects:"

"Although many investigators have successfully achieved separations using variations of a concept wherein particles are buoyed upwards against gravity in a magnetically attracted fluid, none have succeeded in separating fine particles in a manner that is practical tor mineral beneficiation. This paper describes laboratory tests and preliminary economic analyses for a new mineral separation process which provides enhanced magnetic buoyancy and separation capabilities. The process provides a means of gravity separation in a regime where conventional gravity separation is inadequate; that is for small differences in mineral densities and for very fine particles. Although early interest centers on gravity separation, the process has also been successfully used for precise magnetic separation.Tests were conducted on a variety of mineral mixtures, ore samples and concentrates including; a sphalerite ore, pyrochlore ores and concentrates, cassiterite pre-concentrates, a chromite pre-concentrate, and heavy mineral placer samples. Separations requiring high discrimination between fine particles narrowly different in density or weak magnetic properties were obtained. Of particular interest is the ability of the process to concentrate or remove oxide minerals or gangues, especially silicates. Potential applications are discussed."

L'exploitation par mine aciel ouvert a commencé en 1965 avec une operation à flanc de montagne. Elle se poursuit actuellement sous Ie niveau de la vallée dans une fosse dont Ie diamètre est de I'ordre de 800 m (2,600 pi), et la profondeur de 150 m (500 pi) sou s Ie fond de la vallee. Elle doit atteindre une profondeur de 360 m (l, 180 pi) sous Ie fond de la vallee , avec des murs hauts de 360 à 490 m et des pentes moyenne de 44°. Le rythrne d'extraction est actuellement de 85,000 tonnes par jour.Dans Ie cadre des etudes entreprises par les Services Techniques de la Division Mines Gaspé, la compagnie Géomines Ltée a été consultée pour étudier les conditions hydrogéologiques et hydrologiques locales et participer a la conception d'un système de drainage superficiel et souterr ain. "During the early development of the Mattabi Mine in 1970, discussions with the Ontario Government revealed their policy of prohibiting, as much as possible, the development of new, isolated, single-industry townsites. Subsequently, Mattabi located its first housing in the Township of Ignace, which is situated 50 miles from the site of the mine and plant. Over 200 employees now commute 100 miles daily to and from work.This paper describes the experience gained and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a remote townsite."
