The high mobility of gold within the plant kingdom results in detectable accumulations of gold in many plants. Concentrations vary within individuals, among species, and with seasons. From an evaluation of the chemistry of easily acce sible organs of common pecies in the northern forests, it is concluded that alder twigs (or leaves) and conifer bark scales are the vegetation components of greatest use in the earch for concealed gold mineralization. Maximum anomaly enhancement is obtained from twigs collected in the spring. Examples are given of urvey conducted in the La Ronge Domain using 1) jack pine bark (A nglo-Rouyn and Upise Lake areas) ; 2) alder twig (McLennan Lake) ; 3) black spruce bark (Rod Zone near Mallard Lake, and at Waddy Lake) ; and 4) multi-media (Tower Lake). At the latter two sites gold-bearing till is blanketed with late glacial material. Gold enrichment in the plants suggest that the roots are ab orbing gold from the underlying till. Complex processe control the uptake and retention of gold in plants. An understanding of these processes pem1its biogeochemistry to assist in locating near- urface mineralization .

"AbstractIn this paper a new type of durable 'spiral-rolled' drill set is introduced and its performance discussed. Efficient and economical mine drilling-depends to a great extent on durability of the drill-set employed. Premature failure of this element damages the drill bit and is costly when tungsten carbide bits are used.Time of drilling of 'spiral-rolled' drill sets introduced at present in Canada is considerably larger than for the presently used drill steel, but laboratory simulated service tests and practical field tests show that the 'drilling life' of the spiral-rolled drill set is several times that of ordinary drill steel.Some features of differential plastic deformation and differential surface rolling, so called 'spiral-rolling', are given.Relations between the drilling machine drill set and characteristics of the ore are discussed. The effect of shims on conical drill rod attachments, the mechanism of failure of drill steel, .and stresses during mine drilling, are analysed.IntroductionIN MINE DRILLING operations, the main interests are: the drilling machines as a source of working energy, the drill set as the tool transferring the working energy to the cutting edges of the bit, and, finally, the drilling characteristic of the .ore or waste rock.This paper includes a review of the possibilities of metallurgical and mechanical improvements in the drill set, with particular attention to drill steel and the attachments.For economical and efficient mine drilling operations, a durable drill rod, attachment, and drill bit are essential. "Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. Sindesar Khurd Mine is situated in Rajasthan, India, and operated by Hindustan Zinc Ltd, under Vedanta Group. The base metal mine is high in reserves of Lead, Zinc and silver and has been producing since 2007 with initial production of 0.3 mtpa. Recently the mine has gained prominence as a base metal underground mine in introduction of latest mining techniques and achieving high production at lowest costs. The promising Lead-Zinc reserves of Sindesar Khurd Mine (SKM) and high-tech exploration adopted by Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), (Vedanta Group), raising the reserves and resources from a meager 9 Mt (1997) to 81 Mt (2012), has prompted HZL management to ramp up the mine production from 0.3 mtpa (2006-07) to 2 mtpa by 2013-14 with ambitious plans to reach 3.5mtpa subsequently (presently largest underground metal mine in India). The complete trackless system underground mine, recently equipped with latest leaky feeder communication system (unique in India), utilize modern drilling, mucking and hauling equipment aided with various utility/service vehicles. Excavation optimization and quality recovery maximization from the open and post filled stoping methods, continual expert analysis and feedback from International consultants like AMC (Australia) and SRK (UK), and involvement of renowned bodies in management excellence, have lead the mine towards highest productivity and lowest mine operating cost, earning the mine a prominent place in the global base metal industry. The paper deals with how the various challenges in mine planning and designing, mine development, operator skill, equipment introduction and maintenance, expertise availability, provide training and exposure to officials, prompt and effective communication/service, control of ground vibrations, maintain ventilation standards etc are faced in attaining high operational excellence and thus attain a record mine output/man shift (OMS) of 14 ton/man shift with targets to reach 20 ton/man /shift. Scientific designing using 2D/3D numerical mine-modeling techniques, faster stope sequencing with introduction of paste filling ( first time in India),latest leaky feeder communication system, control ground vibration to stringent standards using electronic delay system, faster raising techniques using raise borers to enhance development and ventilation, cavity scanners to monitor large stope voids, fast shaft sinking at 100 m/month(Chinese expertise) and maintaining adequate ventilation with close software monitoring are some of the highlights discussed in the paper towards achieving the targets.

"In the present work, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and electrochemical analysis were carried out to investigate the intermediate species and electrochemical dissolution process of chalcopyrite in the presence of sulfur and iron oxidizing microorganisms. For bioleaching of chalcopyrite by the sulfur oxidizing microorganism Acidithiobacillus caldus, the redox potential was always lower than the appropriate value and chalcopyrite was mainly directly oxidized to polysulfide (Sn 2-), thus resulting in low copper extraction. As for bioleaching of chalcopyrite by the iron oxidizing microorganism Leptospirillum ferriphilum, chalcopyrite was mainly directly oxidized to polysulfide at the initial stage where redox potential was lower than the appropriate value and resulted in low dissolution rate. At the middle stage where redox potential was appropriate (about 350–480 mV vs. Ag/AgCl), chalcopyrite was mainly transformed to intermediate species of Cu2S rather than polysulfide, thus resulting in high dissolution rate. At the later stage where redox potential was higher than the appropriate value, chalcopyrite was mainly directly oxidized to polysulfide which caused the later passivation of chalcopyrite. Finally, a model of electrochemical dissolution process of chalcopyrite in the presence of sulfur and iron oxidizing microorganisms was provided.INTRODUCTIONBiohydrometallurgy is considered as one promising mineral processing technique in processing low grade ores due to the advantages of simplicity, low cost and eco-friendly. Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most abundant copper-bearing resource, accounting for appropriately 70% of the known reserves in the world, while is recalcitrant to bio-hydrometallurgy mainly due to the coated passivation layer (Klauber, 2008; Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). However, the detailed dissolution and passivation mechanisms of chalcopyrite bioleaching are still uncertain. The microorganisms assisting chalcopyrite dissolution can be mainly classified into three types, including mesophilic microorganisms (e.g., Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans), moderately thermophilic microorganisms (e.g., Acidithiobacillus caldus, Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans and Leptospirillum ferriphilum), and extremely thermophilic microorganisms (e.g., Metallosphaera sedula, Sulfolobus sp., Acidianus sp., and Sulfurcoccus mirabilis). Moderately thermophilic microorganisms have a better prospect in the future industrial application of chalcopyrite bio-hydrometallurgy (Olson, Brierley, & Brierley, 2003; Rohwerder, Gehrke, Kinzler, & Sand, 2003). Hence, investigating the detailed dissolution and passivation mechanisms of chalcopyrite bioleaching by moderately thermophilic microorganisms is of important significance, which will provide essential information for promoting chalcopyrite bioleaching by moderately thermophilic microorganisms in laboratory or industrial plant."

Introduction In this paper it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the problems confronting the management of a gold mine in choosing a method of milling to recover the gold from various classes of ore. In order to simplify the discussion, the more common types of gold ores are classified from a metallurgical point of view as follows: Class 1?A: Free-milling ores which require only relatively coarse crushing. B: Free-milling ores which require finer grinding to release the gold. Class 2?A: Gold ores which contain the gold partly in the flee state and partly associated with a small amount of iron sulphide, and which do not require fine grinding. B: Gold ores similar to 2A, but which require fine grinding. Class 3?A: Gold ores containing copper in quantities insufficient to interfere to a serious extent with cyanidation. Gold ores containing copper in sufficient quantity to interfere with cyanidation but in which a large proportion of the gold is in the free state, the remainder being chiefly associated with the copper mineral, chalcopyrite. Gold ores containing copper and other sulphides, such as pyrite, etc., in which the gold is principally associated with these sulphides.

Geophysical studies have extended seaward in recent years, and the important discoveries which have been made have led to a better understanding of geological processes. A present source of certain minerals, the sea will eventually serve as an important source of desalinated water. The continental helves, in particular, represent a potential mineral resource. The expansion of Canadian oceanographic effort that is now underway will eventually lead to the exploitation of the wealth beneath the sea. THE subject of this symposium, which emphasizes the word "geophysics," the specialties of the speakers who are contributing and the nature of the audience at first made me believe that I, a a physical oceanographer, would be out of place. However, I shall undertake to classify myself as a geophysicist, and shall arrange my remarks on my specialty o that they might be of interest to those of you who are predominantly geologists, metallurgists or mining engineers.

"IntroductionALTHOUGH most uranium deposits of the Canadian Shield lie along its western and southern margins, those of the Lake Athabasca region extend easterly along the north shore of the lake and beyond to Charlebois lake. The western end of this belt of deposits, in the vicinity of Goldfields, is 80 miles from the Palaeozoic contact, and its eastern end, at Charlebois lake, is 240 miles from the nearest Palaeozoic rocks.Deposits in this belt may be grouped in four districts, which are, from west to east:(1) The Goldfields district, an area approximately 20 miles square, centred on Beaverlodge lake and extending eastward from St. Joseph's point to Moose channel.(2) A small area in the vicinity of Sucker bay, which is about l0 miles east of Fond du Lac.(3) An area including Middle lake to the northwest shore of Black lake at the Nisto mine.(4) A fairly large area extending northward from the eastern end of Black lake, through Charlebois lake to Spreckley lake.HistoryThe region has stimulated interest in mining circles since the reconnaissance survey of J. B. Tyrrell of the Geological Survey of Canada in l893, who reported concentrations of iron along the north shore of lake Athabasca. The deposits were staked and re-staked up to the early 'twenties' but are too lean to form ore."

The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

For slope stability, knowledge of major and minor discontinuity sets that form the rock mass fabric is paramount for pit slope designs. Due to the increased awareness of health and safety in mining projects, efforts have been made to limit structural mapping in order to minimize the risk to personnel associated with approaching potentially unstable areas. Recognizing the importance of such safety precautions, Golder Associates Ltd. is applying a combination of techniques including 3D photogrammetry, conventional mapping and drilling with core orientation to enhance structural data collection. Photogrammetry uses digital photographs to produce a virtual model of a rock mass surface. The application of these techniques will be exemplified through an expansion design of an existing open pit. A comparison of stereonets obtained using these techniques showed some agreements, but also highlighted limitations of each method. The application of photogrammetry was found to be very useful in complementing the other existing techniques.

Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

Non-contacting, radioisotope density and level gauges are discussed. The characteristics of the more commonly used isotopes, the techniques of detection and the methods of presenting information are reviewed. The gauge parameters of accuracy, response time and long-term stability are tabulated with reference to calibration techniques and operating requirements. Automatic control systems, both pneumatic and electrical, are used in conjunction with density gauges on filter feeds, and in thickener underflow and heavy media processes. These systems are described. Procedures for installation, start-up and operator training are outlined, along with considerations of preventative maintenance and service requirements. Typical gauge system costs, including capital expenditure, installation, start-up and service, are presented, wherever possible, in order to provide a basis of comparison with more conventional systems.

"Laboratory-scale sulphuric acid leach tests were conducted on Elliot Lake and Rabbit Lake ores in the presence of various oxidants, namely: Fe2(SO4)3, CI2, H2O2, NaClO3, MnO2, H2SO5, HNO3, Oxon e, K2Cr2O7, KMnO4, O3 and O2. Uranium extraction is significantly accelerated when an oxidant is present in the leach slurry. Uranium extraction of 96-99% can be achieved by maintaining the oxidation potential of the leach slurry in the range of400 to 500 m V (S.H.E.). A rough cost comparison of all the oxidant s indicates that the use of Fe2(SO4)3, 02, O3, C12, HNO3 or MnO2 is far less expensive than NaClO3 and the uranium extraction rates are similar to or better than with NaCIO3. For uranium extraction, it is concluded that gaseous oxygen (i.e., air or oxygen) would be the most effective and economical oxidant for the 24- to 36-hour leach of Elliot Lake ore; whereas for the 8- to I2-hour leach of Rabbit Lake ore, a strong chemical oxidant (e.g. NaCIO3, H202, 03, K2Cr2O7, H2SO5 or HNO3) would be a logical choice.IntroductionThe common practice for the treatment of uranium o res is leaching with sulphuric acid or with a carbonate-bicarbonate mixture. Generally, the latter process is ad opted when an excess (> 18%) of acid-consuming components (e.g., carbonate) is present in the ore. Irrespective of the nature of the leachant, the addition of an oxidant to the leach mixture is necessary to obtain a high uranium extraction.The maximum extraction of uranium can only take place when all the uranium is in the highest oxidation state (i.e.,U +6-uranic ion) . Because a certain percentage of uranium present in the ore is invariably in the lower oxidation state (i.e.,U+4-uranous ion) , the addition of an oxidant to the leach slurry is necessary to oxidize uranous ion to the uranic state."

"Extracting any metal, especially specialty metals and rare earth elements, requires an in-depth analysis of the costs and potential revenue as well as a due diligence study of other stakeholder interests. Rare earth projects are generally in the billion dollar US range or above, and thus failure to accurately predict any loss of revenue caused by impurities within the product or additional effluent treatment costs can destroy an otherwise viable study. Two prime sources of input impurity are considered: impurities in the material feed and from reagents. The effect of these impurities factor on both the product (in reduced revenue) and on residual “tailings” that may incur additional unforeseen costs.INTRODUCTION“Truth passes through three stages. Today’s engineer must design with confidence; but do so amidst proprietary secrets and unfamiliar pollutants, which present a myriad of interesting challenges. Is it possible to build a viable rare earth plant to a realistic budget, without destroying that which we cherish? Some see this as contradictory but in reality it is the only viable option.WHEN GOOD PROJECTS FAILWithout rare earths the Copenhagen agreement might be null and void. Running a wind turbine with a 30 tonne conventional magnet requires some hefty engineering and prohibitive investment. Despite their ‘Green metal’ applications, production of rare earths have created environmental nightmares, as Folger stated in 2011 when visiting Baotou, or has Jaing Mainheng who has been quoted by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard 6 Jan 2013. This comment is not a criticism of China; the details are from a 2012 white paper published by the Chinese Government that initiated a $6 billion environmental clean-up. Nor is China unique; other plants have had problems as well. There were toxic leaks in the 1990s from Mountain Pass, and the Mitsubishi Bukit Merah Plant (built in Malaysia in 1958) required a $100 million clean-up."

"An analysis of the number of industrial injuries shows that the mining sector is particularly affected, since mining is one of the most dangerous industrial activities in Canada. This has led to numerous inquiries, and supports the need for an in-depth study aiming at the identification of factors responsible for these accidents. One possible factor often pointed at is the small crews incentives and this paper presents a scientific approach applied to check a potential link between bonus and accidents at two mining companies located in northwestern Quebec.The data required to do so were the accidents, the salaries and the number of hours worked at each mining site by the hourly paid personnel for the period from June 1979 to January 1982. The analysis of the results derived from the initial information shows different behaviours of the frequency rate vs the bonus rate at these mines. The number of days lost per accident is independent of the bonus rate at both mine sites, as shown by Khisquare tests on contingency tables.IntroductionA wide variety of opinions has been pinpointed by a survey of the literature related to individual or small crew incentives and industrial accidents in sectors of activity where it applies. In addition, various formulae of mining contracts take place in the industry on one part, and statistics from this sector indicate a high accident frequency rate on the other part. These fact s have lead to this scientific investigation which does isolate the direct impact of the bonus on workers' accidents. This study was undertaken with the full support of the Quebec Metal Mining Association.The conclusions of this preliminary phase of the researchproject are presented for two mining complexes in northwestern Quebec. The procedure is somewhat similar to the approach of the Belmoral Commission, with the underlying assumption that bonus has a direct impact on accidents."

"The Pierre Beauchemin gold deposit, situated 15 km NW of Rouyn-Noranda, produces an average of 1050 tonnes of ore a day. Reserves are 1.2 Mt grading 5.6 g/t Au. The deposit, located in a shear zone within the Flavrianpluton, in the Blake River Group, is hosted by four major rock types: meta-trondhjemite, meta-tonalite, hybrid rocks and meta-diorite (the prefu; ""meta-"" is omitted thereafter). The trondhjemite, tonalite, and metamorphic hybrid rocks are spatially distributed as a series of sub-horizontal tabular sills that form a genetically related group. Early fractures that permitted either the emplacement of pre-diorite felsic dikes or the formation of a visible alteration caused by early fluid circulation might have been developed in response to initial strain created during regional deformation. These fractures were precursors to the emplacement of diorite and the development of major shear planes. Sub-horizontal north-trending en échelon diorite lenses are observed at the mine. Together, these diorite lenses constitute larger scale diorite zones which are observed at the scale of the pluton. The diorite zones are interpreted as evidence of an episode of sub-vertical extension sustained by the layered trondhjemite, tonalite and hybrid system. The anisotropy created by the less competent sub-horizontal en échelon diorite was an important factor. In shear zone development and subsequent mineralization. The tonalite and diorite accommodated further defomation and developed the main N030°/40° ESE shears along with the spatially associated N060°/50°-60° SSE, and the N000°/10°-40° E shear zones. The N000° shears are interpreted as refracted or deflected equivalents of the N030° shears. The combined shears compose the Eldrich shear system which trends approximately N030°/40° ESE and has had a general reverse movement with a minor sinistral component.Gold mineralization occurs in all four major rock types as en échelon sigmoidal shaped lenses associated with the major N030° deformation system. The distribution of ore lenses can be divided into two categories: The first category occupies sub-horizontal diorite zones. The lenses trend N-S, dip 100 40° E, and are associated with shear zones, sub-horizontal fractures or tonalite-diorite contact planes. The second category of lenses is found in felsic granitic rocks; the lenses trend either N0300!40°ESE or N060°/50°-60° SSE. Local hydraulic breccia zones are observed near ore zones occupying felsic granitic rocks. These breccias may have resulted from high fluid pressures brought upon by confinement as a result of impermeable zones in an anisotropic tonalite-diorite system."

If their pretension is not fully warranted by fact it is not for lack of any technical attainment or service to the public but by reason merely of their neglect to cultivate the cohesion and consciousness that are the outward and visible signs of a professional body. This paper is an attempt, first to sketch briefly the course of the events during the past thirty-five years that have resulted in organizing the mining industry of this country in its present form; then to notice the principal features of the professional organization of this day; and finally to point out that an important part of the work of the mining engineer remains in the state of chaos that characterized the whole of it three or four decades ago, and to suggest a remedy. Thirty years ago there came a great wave of interest in mining in Canada, based principally upon the discovery of gold-quartz and gold-copper throughout wide areas in Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia.

The gold district of northwestern Quebec, though it has attracted such widespread attention during the past year, is still in the prospect stage throughout, and one must preface any remarks about it with the plain statement that its capacity to produce gold commercially is still subject to proof. However, this proof may be forthcoming any day, and from widely separated localities. Consequently it is of interest to note some of the features of the region and of the prospects now being developed. First I shall note the relation of this mining development to the province of Quebec and to the Dominion; then will follow a brief resume of the known geological facts; and finally I shall describe briefly some of the more advanced prospects developed during the past twelve-month. Those that have followed closely the fortunes of the new gold-field will find little that is new in what follows, but it may serve a useful purpose for others by bringing together scattered items of information and presenting them as a whole. GOLD MINING AND AGRICULTURE First let us consider the gold belt in its relation to the province of Quebec. Apart from the world-renowned asbestos camp south of the St. Lawrence, it is the only mineral development of major importance the province has experienced. It is the first important development in the province's vast area of Precambrian rocks, most of which remains as yet totally unexplored and unprospected. The relative importance of this first mining camp in northern Quebec cannot as yet be gauged, but it is bound to stimulate an active interest in the other mineral-bearing areas now known to exist, and in the vast unexplored spaces.

Orano Mining Somaïr uranium treatment plant (Niger) uses a pugging-curing process to leach uranium. Sulfuric acid, nitrates and water are added to the finely grinded ore in a rotary drum to leach uranium bearing minerals and solubilize uranyl sulfate ions. Reagents, sulfuric acid and nitrates, are the main OpEx of this process step. The economical optimization of their addition requires a thorough knowledge of the ore behavior in solution with these reagents. Orano Mining technical direction and Somaïr laboratories developed a model to predict the curing process uranium recovery surface with a limited number of parameters. Experimental laboratory work to fit the model needs to be done for each type of ore which can require a lot of metallurgical tests and would be time consuming. In order to optimize the required number of tests, an innovative experience plan was designed in parallel to the development of this model reducing the required number of tests to only eight. Once the parameters of the models are correctly fit, the comparison between the estimated values and the actual values for the uranium recovery is excellent (less than 0.5% error in average). Associated with an updated cost model of the curing process, this new recovery model helps the plant operator find the best set of reagents to maximize curing process profitability in the Somaïr plant day after day.

International trends indicate that the pendulum has to start its swing the other way, if Canada's mining industry is to maintain its preeminent position in the global mining arena. This article, which is based on a paper presented by the author at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Newfoundland Branch of CIM, identifies these trends and how they could interact with Canadian policy.IntroductionThe title of this paper is not a very imaginative or catchy one, but it states the topic quite succinctly, if not tersely. This paper looks into a crystal ball to see what might be in store for mine financing over the balance of the current decade.In the event that the reader feels some trepidation about the prospect that such a paper could seek to be the definitive work on the subject, it should be made clear at the outset that this is not the case. The author is, after all, not an economist, a scholar, a financial analyst, or a soothsayer, but is rather a simple accountant who has been closely involved with the mining industry, and the financing thereof, for some twenty years.The paper recognizes that, while a mine may be born when production begins, the mine is conceived when exploration starts. As this act of conception is obviously an essential part of mining, the financing of exploration is also covered in this paper. To attain a focus, this paper approaches the topic of mine financing in the nineties as follows: first, the major emerging forces in the industry are identified: and, second, the implications of each of these forces on financing are considered."
