"IntroductionEnvironmental pollution problems, caused by gases or effluents, by high noise levels or from air borne dust, are placing increasing demands of the operators, from statutory authorities, and from the general public, to adopt more stringent dust control measures. This requires that a successful plant dust control program be an integral part of any plant operation. While a successful environmental program is a key factor in maintaining productivity and good labour relations, anticipation of future environmental regulations during the plant design phase can avoid the high cost of plant upgrading, or dealing with pulmonary conditions in the work force in subsequent years.Particulate removal, conventionally called dust collection, involves the removal of coarse- and fine-particulates from the airstream. Although generally limited to that required for contro!Hng plant generated air emissions, particulate control equipment also has a wide application for air cleaning and filtration inside the plant, as well as for recovery of usable products.In the late 1950s and early 1960s the public became more concerned with the problems of air pollution. This increasing concern was stirred by an awareness of the extremes to which water pollution had progressed in many of the rivers and lakes, by increasing perception of air pollution as detected by visible smog and harsh chemical odors, by the alarming rate of increase of smog plagued cities and communities, and by specific incidents where ill health could be traced to specific episodes of air pollution. Particle size is perhaps the most important single factor affecting particulate control. Large particles (over 5 microns) constitute the major mass fraction of most sources of emission and economical control equipment dqes exist for their efficient control. However, while these larger particles frequently represent the source of soiling and unsightly smoke plumes, they are not a major health problem as they tend to settle relatively quickly, are more easily scrubbed from the atmosphere by rain, and are not able to penetrate the respiratory system. By far the most important form of particulate air pollution is the fine particulate, (below 3 microns) which is harmful to the pulmonary system. The adverse effects caused by this particulate matter on human health are for the most part related to injury to the surfaces of the respiratory system. Particulate material in the respiratory tract may produce injury itself, or it may act in conjunction with gases, altering their sites or their modes of action. A combination of particulates and gases may produce an effect that is greater than the sum of the effects caused by either individually (i.e. synergistic effect)."

Based on analysis of the evolutionary history of the valley in Baihetan, the mechanism of asymmetrical evolution, gradual migration-incision evolved from left bank to the right, is revealed in Baihetan river valleys. The process of in-situ stress evolution is carried out by using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). Consequently, the numerical results which indicate the main regulations of that stress field are as follow: (1) The phenomenon termed "high in-situ stress fold" appears in the bottom of the valley. With the maximum principal stress being 28-34 MPa, the stress increases significantly at a vertical depth of approximately 130 m. (2) The in-situ stress presents zonal distribution along the bank slope. It is apparent that the in-situ stress field consists of stress relaxation zone (SRZ), stress concentration zone (SCZ) and original stress zone (OSZ). The horizontal depth of stress relaxation zone varies from the left bank (roughly 200 m) to the right (about 120 m). Furthermore, the stress evolution of the left bank slope is studied. As a result, it is found that asymmetrical erosion contributes to the difference of the in-situ stress distribution as a critical factor, between the left bank and the right. And for an asymmetrical valley, the evolutionary process of in-situ stress field is a circular procedure, which includes the incision of valley, the accumulation of landslides and the migration of valley.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. Introduction The property of Normetal Mining Corporation is in Desmeloizes township, Quebec, twelve miles north of Dupuy on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Quebec city co Cochrane, Ontario. The ore bodies occur within a band of highly sheared and sericitized agglomerate which strikes N.60°W. and clips 82° north. Along a zone 1,000 feet or more in length and of variable width, the agglomerate has been replaced by copper, zinc, and iron sulphides, with copper usually predominant on the hanging-wall side and pyrite replaced in part by sphalerite on the footwall. A northsouth diabase dyke cuts through the ore zone near its east end. The Normetal mill produces a copper concentrate and a zinc concentrate which are shipped, respectively, to Noranda, Que., and Newcastle, Penn., U.S.A., for further treatment. The present paper deals with the milling of ore from what is known as No. 3 orebody. This is a lenticular body of high-zinc ore lying co the east of the diabase dyke, along the line of strike of the main ore zone, which extends westward from the dyke. On its northern side, No. 3 orebody is in contact along most of its length with a narrow band of copper ore which is highly oxidized.

"The lack of notch ductility in structural steel in general, and in ship plate in particular, has been the object of widespread attention in the metallurgical world since the spectacular collapse of the ill-fated S.S. Schenectady in 1943. Numerous investigations have been carried out, many new tests have been developed, and a vast amount of useful data has been published, with the result that our knowledge is now far more advanced than it was at the time of this disaster. Interest has focused largely on the medium strength steels, and the various factors which cause a normally ductile steel to behave in a brittle manner in the presence of a notch and at relatively .low temperatures have been thoroughly studied.The literature available on high-tensile steels, however, is less extensive and the present paper is intended to supplement this information. Notch toughness tests have been carried out, at the request of the R.C.N., on a high-tensile manganese steel in the form of commercial ship plate. One of the newer tests, the tear test, and the Charpy V-notch impact test, were used to examine the characteristics of plate for the construction of an ice-breaker. About 250 plates, mainly in the thickness range from 11,4 in. to 1 % in., were tested. An an-alysis of the results obtained is presented, certain aspects of the tear test are discussed, and the correlation between the two types of test is studied. On the basis of information available from casualty ships, the plates, with few exceptions, were considered to be satisfactory."

Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or 'basins', namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

Abstract -The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterozoic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Formations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Transvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase deformation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE +Au concentrations.

The Similkameen Division of Newmont Mines Limited operates a low-grade open-pit copper mine in southern British Columbia. The copper mineralization is extremely erratic.As a result, over seven years of operation, ore control methods have evolved from standard flagging based on blast-hole assays, through an in-pit grab sampling system, to the present method of mining to computer-determined ore-waste boundaries based on geostatistics. These improved ore control methods have resulted in a gain of at least 25% on ore tonnage miffed, at the same grade as obtained using earlier techniques. At the same time, geostatistical ore reserve estimates are now within 7% of milled ore tonnage and grade on a yearly basis, whereas the original polygon ore reserves under-estimated mineable ore tonnage by 15% to 45% and over-estimated grade by about 20%. The author discusses why traditional ore estimation methods give poor results in erratically mineralized orebodies and describes the geostatistical approach to the problem.

An arsenical ore containing both pyrite and arsenopyrite was heated to a temperature at which decomposition and distillation took place. The condensate consisted of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide, although the analysis of the ore showed that volatile arsenic and sulphur were present in proportion to produce a condensate of arsenic trisulphide and sulphur. Distillation tests on the mineral arsenopyrite also produced a condensate of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide. This arsenic sulphide gave a distinct x-ray diffraction pattern which was not listed in the A.S.T.M. data file. This same sulphide can be produced by heating a mixture of arsenic and sulphur in vacuo. Its chemical analysis corresponds to As2S2. The dissociation pressures of arsenopyrite and the vapour pressures of arsenic disulphide and arsenic metal were measured, using a quartz "spoon" gauge. "The automotive industry is under a constant pressure to reduce the weight of vehicles in order to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. As such, there is an ever-growing demand for high strength and high ductility steel grades to meet the need for lightweight automotive components. Over the past decade, the production and application of 2nd and 3rd generation Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) as a lightweight material in automobiles has gained significant popularity due to their exceptional mechanical properties. However, the production cost of these high manganese steel remains high, partially due to the need of large amounts of ferromanganese as alloying material in standard steelmaking processes.The current study introduces a new and cost-effective technology for the production of medium- and high-manganese steels, where self-fluxed micro-pellets of manganese ore will be used as the source of manganese that can be injected into the steel bath. Prior to injection, these pellets are subjected to a pre-reduction process using a mixture of H2 and CO gases, where partial metallization of iron and manganese will occur. Direct injection of the pre-reduced micro-pellets provides less volatilization/emission and higher recovery of manganese, and is capable of producing AHSS with 6–18 wt% Mn.INTRODUCTIONAutomakers are constantly searching for lighter, stronger and cheaper materials in an effort to create safer and more fuel efficient vehicles. The introduction of aluminum alloys and polymer composite materials for automotive applications has been carving into what is traditionally one of the most profitable markets of the iron and steel business. Since 1978, most systematic studies of AMD passive treatment with limestone drains (LD) have dealt with coal mines in the United States. The authors present in this paper the first results of a triennial study initiated in 1999 on the performance of LD installed at the Ni-Cu Lorraine old mine site in Temiscamingue during a remediation plan that involved the installation of a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) over the reactive pyrrhotite-rich tailings. Typically, a LD is a trench enclosed by impervious materials filled with crushed limestone and may be oxic or anoxic. Four LD (one filled with marble and 3 with dolomite) were installed at the Lorraine site. The LD have been in operation since May 1999 and are performing differently. The most contaminated mine effluent flows south and is directed towards 3 LD filled with crushed dolomite, while a 4th LD was filled with crushed marble and installed west. The LD filled with marble has been generating maximum alkalinity since the beginning of the passive treatment. Two of the dolomite drains have been generating alkalinity since mid-summer 1999, but one is not, even if a substantial pH raise was observed. A pH above 5.5 is required usually for the dolomite drains to start generating alkalinity. The installation of LD at the Lorraine site contributes significantly to the reduction of metals and sulphates loading.

This paper looks at the financing process and work required to support it, during and after the Feasibility Study, and bring it to a successful closing. It will include comment on the significance of permits, environmental plans, construction contracts, offtake arrangements, hedging, insurance, and others requirements to support a financing plan.

Mine Safety in Chile ?Since the year 2000 fatality rate averages 34 per year ?1% of world mining labour force but 8% of world?s mining fatalities San Jose Mine Safety ?From 1998 to 2010 eight fatalities ?In 2003 mine inspectors recognized no second means of egress and a raise system was developed ?In 2006 182 workers were injured, 56 of them seriously ?In January 2007, there was a fatality after a rock burst, and the government ordered the mine closed ?Less than a year later the mine was back in operations. It had not complied with some of the basic safety measures ordered. One of those measures was to complete the escape way ladder.

Construction projects are becoming more demanding both in terms of time and complexity. This necessitates intricate planning and sequencing of activities at the macro and micro level and continuous flow of resources across the project in order to achieve planned targets. Work and Resource planning need to be done in such a way that limited resources give optimal output. Currently dominant activity-based scheduling techniques like Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) do not model work-flow or resource-flow through a project life cycle. An extension to the conventional activity based planning is Location Based Management System (LBMS). LBMS has been explored and utilised in the case of repetitive and cyclic projects such as high rise buildings. This study focusses on the application of LBMS to repetitive and non-repetitive components of Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) projects involving construction of substation and cable laying. This paper presents the findings on comparing the current planning practice for cable laying with an LBMS based approach. A key finding of the study was that the conventional practice resulted in a schedule with several coordination issues that could not be identified in the planning reports. Using the LBMS based approach these issues could be identified and decisions required for resolving these could be made.

Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec

It concludes with a selected bibliography.Surveys Utilizing Leakage HalosLeakage halos can be used as scalar or vector quantities in thesearch for deeply buried blind mineral deposits. In the first case, the occurrence of a leakage halo (e.g. a small pitchblende seam) may simply indicate the possible presence of pitchblende mineralization or orebodies; in the second case, the areal or three-dimensional distribution of leakage halos may, by their increasing frequency and I or increasing metallic or gangue element content, provide a means of vectoring in on loci of mineralization and orebodies. Examples of both cases are given in the following text.Leakage halos are of many types, as shown in Figure 2 (Part 1), and are best discussed with respect to their associated mineral deposits. Furthermore, it should be noted that leakage halos are frequently offshoots or extensions of enveloping halos. Where this occurs, careful tracing of the leakage halo(s) downward or upward respectively will often lead to the apex or nadir (bottom) of the enveloping halo(s) and ultimately to mineralization or ore."

Abstract-Eclogite is an important source of diamond in the upper mantle, but is more localized than peridotite. Using eclogitic minerals in kimberlite and diamond exploration is also more problematic than using the well-known peridotite-derived indicator minerals Cr-pyrope and magnesiochromite. The problems include color similarities between orange garnets from eclogites, Cr-poor megacrysts, and crustal garnets, chemical similarities with Cr-poor megacryst suite garnets (specifically elevated Na2O contents), and low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in most known kimberlites. Chemical screens must be used carefully to distinguish between varieties of orange garnets in exploration samples. For example, most orange garnets of crustal origin have >22 wt% FeO, with mantle eclogite garnets having lower values. Na2O-bearing garnets from the Cr-poor megacryst suite can be distinguished from Na2O-bearing garnets from diamondiferous eclogites by the elevated TiO2 contents of the former. The low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in kimberlites worldwide, however, may dictate that use of eclogite garnets in diamond exploration in most cases be restricted to advanced stages of kimberlite exploration and evaluation of kimberlite diamond potential. Crpyropes, Mg-ilmenites and Cr-rich chromites are more useful than eclogitic garnets in most stages of diamond exploration. If orange garnet xenocrysts are sought in a kimberlite exploration program, those from the Cr-poor megacryst suite will be more useful than eclogite derived garnets, due to the typical great abundance of the former, although they carry no information of the diamond potential of the host kimberlite.

A brief description of the hydro-gen reduction of nickel from ammoniacal solutions by the Sherritt process is given, indicating how this procedure can now be used to coat a great number of materials -particularly powders -with nickel or cobalt, whereby so-called composite powders are produced. The technique for the production of composite powders is described, particularly with regard to the surface activation of noncatalytic powders, whereby it is possible to coat core powders uniformly with nickel or cobalt. The properties of some of the more interesting composite powders, such as Ni/ AI, Ni/WC, Co/WC, Ni/Graphite and i/P, are discussed as well as possible fields of application for these new products. INTRODUCTION DURING the last decade, no-table advances have been made in pressure hydrometallurgy, so that large quantities of three of the more com1r.on metals, copper, cobalt and nickel are now produced on a commercial scale by hydrometallurgical processes.

Removal of toxic anions from aqueous solution was studied using a Magnetic Ion Exchange (MIEX) resin which is a polyacrylic, strong base resin. Gravity based settling is made more efficient due to the magnetic nature of the resin which is advantageous over conventional ion exchange resins. In addition, the magnetic microspheres of MIEX have larger surface area in comparison to conventional ion exchange resins. Over the years MIEX has been successfully used and has gained significant popularity for efficiently removing dissolved organic matter from wastewater and groundwater. In the present study the efficiency of the MIEX resin was tested for the removal of chromium(VI), molybdenium(VI), vanadium(V) and arsenic(V) anions. Effects of pH (2-10) and temperature (25oC-55oC) were examined. In general, low solution pH values were favorable for anion uptake by MIEX. Except for chromium(VI), the metal ion uptake was significantly increased by the increase in solution temperature. The adsorption data were analysed on the basis of chemical speciation and heterogeneous kinetic models.
