"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick . A detailed deep seismic survey will be necessary to substantiate the structure and resource estimates"",Maceral and coal quality percentage diagrams of five column samples of these seams (the 7 Foot and 13 Foot Seams of Inverness Equivalents) show a bright banded coal, high in reactive macerals, which will produce a weak coke unsuitable f or metallurgical purposes. A thermal coal with a rank of H. V. ""B"" Bituminous (0.64% Ro) is present, averaging 12000 btu llb (6 660 kcai/kg), 10% ash and 6% sulphur, of which 60 to 80% is derived from pyrite.Microlithotype profiles of the major Mabou and Inverness coals show characteristic successions that can be used f or seam identification and proved valuable f or structural interpretations.The time of faulting in the major fracture zone on the eastern margin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Basin has been deduced from coal rank variations. "The ISO 9000 Quality Management System Standards have become internationally accepted as the way to manage quality assurance. The author has developed a Maintenance Management System Standard using ISO 9001as a model and is working with a major basemetal mining company to implement this. This paper describes the structure of the standard and the steps required for its implementation.Using a management standard ensures that a system is maintained, reviewed by internal audit, and when instances of failing to follow the procedures (nonconformances) occur, that corrective action is taken. It also ensures that regular reviews are made and that the sys-tem is continuously improved.The Standard is designed so that if an organization decides to register to an ISO 9000standard, the Maintenance Management System will be in a format that is compatible and can be incorporated with little effort into the Quality System.IntroductionIn reviewing maintenance operations at many mining companies, and often seeing those same organizations some years later, two recurring issues have been noticed..The first issue is how dependent effective maintenance is upon individual supervisors and crews. In one situation, a mine that had an excellent maintenance system in the 1980s. Now, with new supervisors and crews, it is starting to develop a system that will bring it back to where it once was. No written procedures remain from the earlier excellent system.The second issue is that most operations feel that maintenance is the sole responsibility of the maintenance supervisors and crews. Nothing could be further from the truth. Maintenance, like safety, is everyone’s responsibility. If the operator does not report problems and perform daily checks, and if the production supervisor runs equipment until it fails, then nothing the maintenance crew does will prevent emergency breakdowns and lost production. More importantly, equipment will be operated in unsafe conditions, putting employees at risk and, with today’s regulations, leaving supervisors open to prosecution.The Maintenance Management System outlined in this paper is designed to establish the present best practices as standard procedures, to provide a continual review so that these practices are improved in the future, and to identify instances where the system fails so that corrective action is taken. The mine referred to above is using this approach to make sure that, this time, the system it implements will survive."

Hydrothermal systems form on land where and when an impermeable cap-rock unit ( either natural or self-sealed) , a permeable aquifer. and permeable discharge and recharge channels (cross-stratal permeability) develop in an anomalously hot part of the crust. A consideration of the relationship between magmatic and tectonic events in volcanically active areas indicates these conditions arise during: (1) the resurgent doming stage of the resurgent caldera cycle; (2) following movement on the bounding faults of tilted fault blocks ; and (3) as a result of hydrothermal boring associated with the intrusion of major sills. On the assumption that the submarine hydrothermal systems which deposit volcanogenic massive sulphide ores are comparable to subaerial hydrothermal systems, it is suggested that: (1) the horizon of mineralization corresponds to the time period when conditions favour the development of hydrothermal systems, as outlined above; (2) exploration for Cu-rich Cu-Zn-Pb or Cu-Zn ores should be directed to paletopographically high areas near discharge conduits , whereas exploration for Cu-poor ZnPb ores should concentrate on paleotopographically low areas down slope from conduits; (3) deposits with stringer zones lying above normally permeable units may be underlain by regionally extensive weakly mineralized and altered zones (self-seal caps) ; (4.) in the absence of a self -sealed cap, the ore horizon may be underlain by a naturally impermeable unit (e .g. a fine clastic sediment) ; (5) the condition of cross-stratal permeability may be evidenced by features such as dykes. alignment of vari ous magmatic and hydrothermal phenomena, abrupt thickness changes in stratiform units indicative of ponding against syn-volcanic faults, and fault-scarp slump deposits; (6) the condition of high heat flow may be evidenced by near-surface magmatism and steep thermal gradients preserved in metamorphic mineral assemblages.

Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

"IntroductionIN THE COURSE of. a spectrographic investigation of the platinum metal .content of various minerals in sulphide ores, the use of • fire-assay beads dissolved in gold-amalgam ( 1) was found suitable for the quantitative determination of palladium and platinum. Later work on platinum and bismuth-rich beads showed however, that these could not always be readily mixed uniformly in the amalgam. Accordingly another technique was sought which would allow the simultaneous determination of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and bismuth, the last .a common contaminant in fire-assay beads. The method evolved, which consists of dissolving fire-assay •beads in .lead, resembles in several respects the method of Scobie (2) in which silver was used. It has equally good sensitivity arid reproducibility, and allows the determination of silver as well as the other metals mentioned. The 'mutua1 standard' method of calculation (3a) is used to determine actual quantities present. This method has been applied to sulphide and arsenide minerals and •ores• of nickeliferous and non-nickelferous deposits• of both pre-and post Cambrian age, and, following a suggestion by Dr. G. S. Hume and the late Dr. H. V. Ellsworth, Geological Survey of Canada, has also been used for a peculiarly rich platiniferous uranium oxide ore from the Nicholson property, Lake Athakaska, Sask. More recently, the method has been .tested for the determination also of iridium and ruthenium and results indicate it may be applied, as• well to osmium."

"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals.The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. It is shown here that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. However, the theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are unlikely to experience growth in crystal particle size through heterogeneous nucleation and are more likely to grow through aggregation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process."

The paper presents the development of a spontaneous heating liability index (SHLI) of coal based on a mathematical approach. The parameters for the calculation of this index have been determined by differential scanning calorimetric studies. Thirty-one coal samples representing both fiery and non-fiery coal seams of different ranks have been collected from different Indian coalfields and their SHLI values have been determined. In addition, the susceptibility of these samples to spontaneous combustion has been ascertained by standard crossing-point temperature measurement. The moisture percentage of all the samples has been obtained by proximate analysis. A comparative study between SHLI and crossing-point temperature, along with moisture percentage, indicates that SHLI predicts the proneness of coal to spontaneous heating more accurately.

"In the Blind River area Proterozoic clastic and sedimentary rocks and minor volcanic rocks (The Huronian Supergroup) uncomformably overlie and trangress northwards over dominantly granitic Archean terrane (2500 + Ma) and are intruded by Nipissing Diabase (2ll5 Ma). Later deformation and metamorphic events are recognized. The developing depositional basin was controlled by the incipient Great Lakes Tectonic Zone marginal to the Algoman Craton.The Matinenda Formation (basal Huronian) comprises northwards-derived fluvial arkose, quartzite, and pyritic, uraniferous oligomictic conglomerate which contained in 1981 some two-thirds of Canada's uranium resources. Production to December 1981 from Elliot Lake totalled 98.3 thousand tonnes U for an average recovered grade of 0.1% U with an additional 671 tonnes U recovered by leaching at Agnew Lake. The remaining resources are at lower grades. Some thorium and yttrium have been produced. Minor amounts of gold reflect the paucity in the source area. Gold is better-developed in the Huronian north of Sudbury reflecting the local source area.The conglomerate beds lie in southeasterly-striking zones controlled by basement topography down sedimentation from uraniferous Archean granite. Uraninite textures, the distribution of monazite, and local enrichment by reworking indicate a syngenetic, probably placer, origin of the mineralization. ""Brannerite"" has formed by solution of uranium from the margins of the uraninite grains and redeposition on the original titaniferous minerals. Penecontemporaneous volcanics may have been a source for sulphur in some of the pyrite and of trace amounts of Co, Ni and Au. Some pyrite may be detrital, some may be authigenic and some introduced.Drab coloured rocks, uranium and sulphide mineralization, the presence of hydrocarbon (thucholite) and a post-Archean regolith formed under reducing conditions have been cited as evidence of an early Precambrian reducing environment extended to the atmosphere. Sedimentary features indicating fast-flowing water and possibly a cold climate imply that the uraninite would be exposed to whatever oxygen was present in the atmosphere under conditions which would inhibit complete solution. In the upper Huronian, red beds and in the Lorrain Formation a monazite - iron oxide assemblage and copper mineralization indicate more oxidizing conditions. . Similar uranium deposits occur at Agnew Lake and in the basal Huronian north of Sudbury there are minor uranium and gold values.Provenance, lack of complete oxidation, transportation and depositional processes, redistribution during diagenesis and possibly low grade metamorphism, and the lack of post-depositional destructive processes are the dominant factors in the formation and preservation of the ores. The modified placer theory of genesis is well entrenched and an exploration model for such deposits throughout the world is well-documented.Research continues on mineralogy and textures of the ores, detailed sedimentology of the ores and their host rocks, with particular emphasis on: provenance area, the influence of early Precambrian mineralization patterns on the mineralization present in the Huronian both in space and in time, fluvial sedimentation and diagenesis. Expansion and reopening of the mines of the Elliot Lake camp should facilitate further studies."

"Due to the randomness of all factors influencing the sintering operation, a two-stepped procedure is proposed to find the best way of using stocked fines at a plant producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry. The approach is based on the following: (1) predict the result of the sintering operation by establishing the best multilinear regression model using some of the characteristics of the loaded material; and (2) find the best solution under a minimizing cost criteria by solving a linear optimization problem using the regression equation plus constraints on the feed and product. IntroductionSome tests carried out using 20% to 30% of sinter in the material loaded into a 60 000 KVA Tysland-Hole electric furnace producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry indicated: (1) a meaningful decrease in the off-gas temperature and, consequently, a better energy use due to the material higher porosity; (2) more uniform heat distribution as a consequence of the electrode reaction zone enlargement; (3) an improved furnace control resulting in a smoother operation; and (4) a decrease in gas production facilitating the off-gas treatment. For some years, this plant used only the coarse fraction of the Mn ores, thus stocking all the received and own-generated fine particles. In view of the mentioned results, a strategy for increasing the use of stocked fines was formulated, including a step where it was necessary to decide which components and respective quantities should be used in the blends to be sintered (Almeida, 1984).It is well known that several factors affect productivity and energy consumption in sinter production, also influencing the product quality. Raw materials characteristics, namely chemical and size composition, affect permeability to gases and may or may not allow a deeper bed. In general, finer ores decrease permeability, increasing electricity consumption by fans, but due to their higher specific surface area, react more completely with other components in the mixture. For coke granulometry, a compromise must be obtained in order not to burn it too quickly nor to widen the flame front, therefore decreasing productivity. Decreasing coke in the blend also acts in sinter bonding, decreasing its consistency and increasing crushing and return fines. Moisture addition also influences components mixing, pre-agglomeration, bed permeability and, consequently, sintering productivity. Therefore, optimum conditions must be established for both a given sintering plant and the components in the feed (Dawson, 1993)."

Data are presented on the global warming issue to reinforce the decision by the U.S to reject the Kyoto protocol. The evidence that CO2 is a problem rather than a benefit is inconclusive and will be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, for economic reasons alone, the US steel industry will continue to minimize CO2 emissions (and the release of real pollutants) per ton of steel through energy reduction programs. However, relative to inevitable increases in absolute CO2 emissions from the utility industry and the transportation sector, future reductions by the steel industry will be inconsequential in the "big picture."

External trade strongly influences the well being of all nations. In the modern economic mechanism, no country is so well endowed that it has not to import commodities from others and to export its products in turn to make good its deficiencies, to rectify or improve its financial structure. From the standpoint of international commerce, Canada is strategically well placed. On the south she is bounded by the richest country in the world. On the east she faces the Atlantic, on the west the Pacific. On both coasts there are fine harbours to which lead great lines of railway that span the continent. Canada is now fifth among the exporting nations of the world. For disposal abroad, she has enormous quantities of primary commodities and substantial amounts of manufactured goods as well. But she is far from being self-sustaining. She is unusually dependent on foreign trade, not only because of the commodities she has to sell but because of the lack of many essential articles she does not or cannot produce. To Canada, external commerce is vastly more important than internal trade. The wealth of nations is decided by their ability to produce more than they need, to sell more than they buy, and to build up favourable balances resulting from trade or services. With few countries, however, are returns perennially satisfactory. Fruitful periods are followed by leaner years. In times of prosperity foreign credits are increased, monetary systems strengthened, reserves accumulated to withstand recurring days of strain. Today, the foundations of financial systems are being re-examined, "dogmas hitherto accepted as canonical are being questioned" . It is not only in Europe and America that men search for illumination in problems arising from monetary restrictions.

"To characterize noise and vibration sources of different types of mining equipment used in underground mining, the authors performed a study in eight Quebec mines on 28 pieces of equipment. This paper presents the procedure followed to select the equipment to be evaluated, and the low-cost acquisition system developed to perform multichannel time-domain data acquisition in harsh environments. It also presents the results obtained for the noise level produced by the equipment and for handarm and whole-body vibration exposures.RÉSUMÉ Dans le but de caractériser les sources de bruits et de vibrations de divers équipements miniers utilisés sous terre, les auteurs ont étudié 28 équipements dans huit mines du Québec. A program to provide technical in-formation on the use of fuels in pyro-metallurgical processes, from the Canadian fuel viewpoint, was initiated about five years ago by a Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy liaison grou1> composed of members from the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division and the Iron and Steel Committee of the Metallurgy Division. This paper is another of a series prepared for this program. Previous papers included a review of pyrometallurgical processes of Canadian interest, a survey of ferrous processes relevant to the development of an integrated steel industry in western Canada and a survey of the fuel requirements of the non-ferrous metals industry in Canada. "Boliden Harjavalta Oy has a long tradition in the Finnish metal industry starting from the 1930's. The Smelter consists of copper and nickel flash smelting lines. Off-gases are captured in the acid plant to produce sulfur products. During the early years of production, the surrounding environment suffered from high SO2 and dust emissions. The first acid plant started in 1947, a few years after commissioning of the smelter. The flash smelting method was developed and commissioned in 1949. This created the basis for today’s environmentally sound metal production. Recent air emission reductions are related to treating lean ventilation and granulation gases. Emissions from the stacks are monitored with continuous measurement devices. SO2 and PM10 concentrations are also measured from the residential area and reported online in cooperation with Harjavalta community and other local industry.INTRODUCTIONProductionBoliden Harjavalta Oy smelts copper and nickel concentrates and refines copper in the western part of Finland. The copper concentrates come from external copper mines mainly in South America and Europe. Concentrates are unloaded at the Pori harbor and transported to Harjavalta by train from a distance of about 60 km. Boliden Harjavalta Oy has operations in Harjavalta and Pori. The smelter in Harjavalta produces copper anodes that are transported via railway to the copper refinery in Pori. The anodes are electro-refined into copper cathodes and by-products like Se, Ag, Au and Pt/Pd concentrate. In the Harjavalta smelter SO2 containing gases are delivered to a sulphuric acid plant where sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide are produced.Our nickel smelter smelts nickel concentrates on a tolling basis to produce nickel matte for customer needs. SO2 containing off-gases are delivered to the sulphuric acid plant for sulphur capture and modification into products.All our operations are certified according to the Quality, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Boliden Harjavalta Oy was the first company in Finland operating in the metal and technology industry to be certified according to the Energy Management Standard EN 16001, currently this certification is done according to ISO 50001."

This paper presents a review of research conducted at the University of Waterloo concerned with the application of aluminum alloy sheet and tube in automotive structures and body panels. The research has focussed on formability prediction and results using a range of damage-based formulations. These models include continuum-level damage approaches and, more recently, a so-called percolation damage approach intended to capture microstructural heterogeneity effects on damage development. This paper presents applications of these damage approaches to simulate formability of experiments considering stretch flange panels. The experiments consider drawbead effects associated with the bend/unbend deformation as the material flows through the drawbead. Recent work on simulating in situ X-ray tomography experiments that capture damage evolution during tensile deformation will also be reviewed.

This paper presents an overview of passive, engineered, biologically-based anaerobic bioreactor (ABR) treatment systems of the sort that can be used to remove dissolved copper from mine wastewaters. The paper begins with a brief history of the origins of this treatment technology and continues with a discussion of principles of engineered wetlands (EWs, advanced kinds of constructed wetlands, CWs) and the use of vertical sub-surface flow (VSSF) varieties that contain pulp & paper biosolids as the reactive medium for EW cells. A brief outline of a procedural methodology used in evaluating the potential for biological treatment on a site-specific basis is also included. An introduction to the microbiology of passive biologically-based treatment systems is followed by some recent research results in the general area of wetlands and ABR research. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of several sites known by the authors to have successfully (or not) demonstrated the potential of this treatment option.

"Here, we statistically proved that giant earthquakes occur at lunar phases specific to each subduction zone. Enough attention during the lunar period, especially when seismicity is occurring, will significantly reduce damage from giant earthquakes. Two case studies in which giant earthquakes occurred after seismicity in dangerous lunar phases were discussed, and the mechanisms underlying why giant earthquakes occur around neap tide at some subduction zones were explained by prohibition of giant earthquake occurrences due to high strain rates at spring tides at N–S subduction zones. The prohibition was statistically proven for uniaxial creep tests on Inada granite with slight stress disturbances. INTRODUCTIONIn previous studies, we showed that from 1900 to present, giant earthquakes (MW ??8) have occurred at lunar phases specific to each subduction zone (Fujii & Ozaki, 2012; Ozaki & Fujii, 2012). Although we later proposed a possible reason for these occurrences, the study lacked statistical analyses (Fujii et al., 2013). Therefore, this paper shows the results of such statistical testing and presents case studies for the Tohoku 2011 and Chile 2014 events, thereby providing updated data on giant earthquakes through July 2014."

The Al-Zn-Mg alloys (e.g. 7004, 7020) are employed for land transport and architectural applications whereas the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys (e.g. 7075, 7050) provide the high strength aircraft alloys. The Cu gives rise to suitably sized and distributed precipitation but causes high quench sensitivity. Their hot work processing also has marked differences; the Cu-free alloys have good extrudability whereas the Cu-bearing alloys have low extrudability and are difficult in rolling as well. The behaviors of the two classes are described in terms of flow stresses and ductility over 300 - 500°C, along with constitutive contrasts. The ductility of the alloys with Cu is much reduced above 400°C by precipitation of a phase at the grain boundaries that can be avoided by suitable heating schedules. The high strength alloys are subject to de-lamination corrosion of sheared edges due to severely pancaked grains; this can be alleviated by holding between passes, in mid-rolling schedule. In torsion tests at 10-1 to 10 s-1/ 250 - 500°C, the stresses (ductilities) at 300°C/ 1s-1 and activation energy Q for 7004 were 118 MPa (2) and 262 kJ/mol. The 7075 was tested after several pretreatments: completely over-aged (softened): 107 MPa (5), Q=150 kJ/mol; whereas, solution and quick cooling to testing caused extraordinarily high peaks related to dynamic precipitation resulting in 160 MPa (1.2), Q=300 kJ/mol.
