In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of Kiruna-type deposits has been ascribed to either immiscible iron phosphate melt separated from silicic magma or precipitation from magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The early Cretaceous Ningwu volcanic basin in Eastern China contains tens of Kiruna-type iron deposits. The orebodies are mainly hosted within the top zones of subvolcanic dioritic intrusions and along the contacts between these intrusions and adjacent volcanic rocks/strata.The orebodies are commonly associated with widespread brecciation and wall rock replacement. Magnetite formation was closely associated with extensive hydrothermal alteration that may extend kilometres, with both vertical and horizontal zonation. Field and textural data indicate that magnetite formed slightly later than albitisation but coeval with apatite and actinolite. Elemental analysis of magnetite and apatite from ores shows distinct features to those as igneous accessary minerals in the host dioritic intrusions, suggesting a genetic relationship to magmatic-hydrothermal processes. Magnetites have elevated TiO2 (up to 5 wt per cent) and V2O3 (up to 0.7 wt per cent), which implies that they are derived from incipient high-temperature magmatic fluids. It is concluded that the Kiruna-type deposits in the Ningwu basin most likely formed from high-temperature magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The emplacement of dioritic intrusions into a subvolcanic setting likely plays a critical role in the development of Kiruna-type deposits.CITATION:Zhao, X-F, Zeng, L-P and Li, J-W, 2015. This paper presents a study about reopening of a quarry near to the geothermal region of Kntahya, Turkey. The production method was gallery blasting which resulted in very high ground vibrations. Therefore the quarry had been closed down by the local authorities about 12 years ago due to possible damages to the geothermal resources. In order to reopen the quarry, reserve estimation and production planning studies needs to be carried out as well as applying environmentally sensitive production method. The result of reserve estimation studies showed approximately 12.5 Mt reserve in the area. The market studies indicated that annual production of 600 000 tonnes could be sold. These results justify to reopen the quarry. In order to overcome environmental problems, bench blasting production method instead of gallery blasting has been planned. This method enables to design a drilling blasting pattern that will almost result in no ground vibrations.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

Although the pattern of metamorphic zones south of the Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault is much obscured by polymetamorphism, displacement of the orthopyroxene isograd by the fault agrees with the displacement of a horizon of "banded aplite" mapped by Andrews (1922). A dextral transcurrent component of 20,000 ft is indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe east-west Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault (Andrews, 1922; King and Thomson, 1953), one of the major geological structures in the Broken Hill district, New South Wales, cuts across the general north-easterly strike of outcrops and fold structures of the Willyama Complex. The degree of shearing and recrystallization in its unusually wide crush zone and the manner in which adjacent rock units and structures have been dragged into conformity with its strike denote considerable movement on the fault. Information concerning the nature of this movement is of critical importance in the search for possible continuations or repetitions of lead-zinc mineralization south-west of Broken Hill.A transcurrent movement of 20,000 ft, with the southern block moving west, was estimated by Andrews (1922), who correlated prominent outcrops of "banded aplite" at The Pinnacles (north of the fault) and Big Hill (south of the fault). Displacement of this order, however, does not seem sufficient to explain the extent and character of the fault zone. Recent chemical and petrological studies of the banded aplites at The Pinnacles and Big Hill by Vernon (19B1) confirmed their similarity, but indicated an origin by metasomatic replacement of pre-existing folded and metamorphosed rocks. To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northernNew Zealand region. The time/space distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.   These time/space patterns can be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, if relative plate motion was essentially transform in the region prior to 26 Ma then a small change in the relative plate vectors may have initiated subduction and the associated volcanism. Southward evolution of the arc can then be seen as the straightening and extension of a single arc. Alternatively, the distribution of volcanic rocks can be interpreted as the capture of a relatively short lived arc by southward migration of the dominant Tonga-Kermadec subduction system.

The literature pertaining to the electrochemical reaction at the anode during electrolytic reduction of alumina by the Hall-Heroult process is not in universal llgreement about the gaseous product. The possibility of electrochemical formation of CO at the anode was examined using existing data. Although the thermochemistry favours co-evolution of CO and CO2 with CO as the major product, the mechanism of the reaction shows this is unlikely. Since the origin of CO can be more logically explained by non-electrochemical mechanisims, it is concluded that CO2 is the only product from the electrolytic reaction at all current densities.

Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.

The GPS and information technology industries are now applying considerable development effort to what is being termed machine control and machine information systems, in particular focusing on the industries the of mining construction and agriculture. GPS based systems are demonstrably finding common acceptance and adding commercial value to many machine applications in industry. This has been the first step in the evolution of the information age that is now reforming mining practices. Adding the technologies of wireless data communication, modem computer databases, and networked PC's mining is on the verge of a new era in overall process management. This paper is a general discussion of what the information age means to miners and a general description of new mining operation technologies available to day from the Caterpillar technology alliance.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

New ZealandÆs largest gold producersÆ OceanaGold Macraes Mine is characterised by a large tonnage and relatively low grade operation. To survive in diminishing real gold prices, the operation must focus on a culture of continuous improvement. This paper presents the outcome of a supplier sponsored continuous improvement project known as the Orica Advanced Mining Services project.   In March 2004 OceanaGold (then GRD Macraes) entered into an Advanced Mining Services (AMS) project with Orica Mining Services. The motivating factor behind OceanaGoldÆs need to improve bulk waste productivity and SAG mill throughput was the planned increase in production from five million to 5.4 million tonnes per annum. A stripping ratio of ten to one meant that optimisation of the drill, blast and production functions was paramount.   The primary focus of the project was to optimise the drill and blast parameters to suit the variable rock conditions throughout the mines main operating pit (Frasers Pit). Fragmentation of the ore for presentation at the SAG mill, and cost reduction on the mining of bulk waste movement, were the primary objectives. A number of additional initiatives complimenting the interface between drill, blast and ore production were also established. These included; +        reduced ore loss through delineation of ore boundaries to allow for blast movement; +        established blasting parameters for variable geological conditions, resulting in improved fragmentation; and +        improved asset utilisation by establishing a blasting regime that angled grade control holes to be used as blastholes in the stockworks area.   A year into the project, the philosophy of continuous improvement is now in-grained at the Macraes minesite. As the project continues, the focus is on the further refining of those procedures established, to ensure a continued focus on lower unit mining production costs.
