Tailings are mostly loose material and can be classed as non-plastic sandy silts. They also tend to have low permeability, resulting in slow consolidation (settling) rates and low shear strength, even after consolidation. These qualities make them prone to liquefaction and, therefore, physical instability. In contrast, coarse waste rocks possess high shear strength and permeability when stacked in dumps. However, air and water flow-through the voids can cause acid mine drainage (AMD) with significant undesirable environmental implications. Combining the two waste streams before disposal by mixing presents a potential opportunity to harness the desirable properties of both waste streams. This practice is termed co-mingling and is prevalent within the coal processing industry. Co-mingling of metalliferous mine tailings is, however, a relatively new concept. By combining the coarse waste rocks and fine-grained tailings streams, the fine tailings tend to fill the voids between the waste rocks, reducing hydraulic conductivity and advective air (oxygen) flow into the rocks, thus possibly reducing acid mine drainage (AMD). Conversely, tailings are introduced to large frictional particles from waste rocks, providing reinforcement, stability, and possibly improved drainage. New separation methods are being introduced to the mining sector, which have the capacity to extract waste with significantly larger particle sizes. High Voltage Pulse (HVP) is a technology in which relatively coarse particles ranging in size from 30 to 100 mm are exposed to an electric pulse discharge. This pulse preferentially fractures mineralised particles while leaving unmineralised rock (gangue) intact. The stream can then be passed via a screen, with smaller mineralised particles reporting to the undersize and removing coarser unbroken barren particles, thereby eliminating waste. Coarse particle flotation (CPF) is another emerging new technology in metalliferous mining that applies flotation separation to coarser particles than conventional flotation. These new technologies produce different tailings (waste) streams with varying physical characteristics and possibly surface chemistries. This research aims to test new tailings mixtures by applying the co-mingling concept to blend the reject streams generated by these two technologies (HVP and CPF) with the tailings produced by conventional flotation. Combining different waste streams before disposal can improve stability and potentially reduce the acid mine drainage (AMD) rate, thus enabling early access to the tailings storage facility for rehabilitation and closure.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. The ERA - Ranger Mine ore processing operation consists of a sulphuric acid leach followed by counter current decantation and solvent extraction circuits. The most expensive unit processing operation at Ranger is the sulphuric acid leach. In 1992 and 1993 changes were made to the operation of the leach circuit. These changes have reduced power and reagent consumption in leach by 30 per cent and 20 per cent respectively with minimal effect on extraction efficiency. The first change was to operate the leach circuits at higher pHs than previously attempted. In addition a cap was placed on the amount of acid added to the leach circuit. Secondly, an on-line pH measurement system was installed and has reduced the variation with time of the leach circuit pHs. Finally, the number of leach vessels used was reduced from ten to seven. This action was undertaken after an examination of the uranium profile and the residence time in the leach circuit from previous years. This paper examines the above changes and assesses their effectiveness on plant performance and costs.

The height of fracturing (HoF) measures the propagation distance of continuous fracturing from the mining horizon and is also termed the height of cracking (Hebblewhite, 2020; Khanal et al, 2019) or hydrologically the height of groundwater drainage (Tammetta, 2013). In longwall practice, HoF is an important predictive indicator for assessing the dewatering effect of panel extraction on the shallow aquifer and surface flows. The HoF determination is basically dependent on field measurement works, typically using surface extensometer, borehole televiewer imaging, piezometer monitoring, packer testing, borehole breakout logging, and isotopic tracer monitoring (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Corbett, 2022; Hebblewhite, 2020; Holla and Armstrong, 1986; Mills and O’Grady, 1998; Walsh et al, 2022a, 2022b). These methods or tools have been widely applied to observe rock fracturing and groundwater responses to longwalls at Australian coalmines, for example, Dendrobium Mine (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Walsh et al, 2022b), Appin Mine (Walsh et al, 2022a), and Springvale Mine (Corbett, 2022). In Chinese mines, borehole televiewer imaging and packer testing are more frequently used due to convenient instrumentation, quick testing, and not requiring long-term maintenance of the instrumentation boreholes. The HoF determination also involves further raw data interpretations, for which specialist software for data extraction and quantitative criteria for bounding the fracture transition and termination are necessary. By combining the measured fracture distribution and longwall parameters regarding panel geometry and geological settings, several HoF models have been developed for conceptualising the understanding of strata depressurisation and providing mine engineers fast calculation tools for HoF prediction. The Mackie model considered the height of fracturing as the upper bound of fractured zone and revealed that within the fractured zone there are highly connected fractures and accordingly porosity enhancement and groundwater depressurisation, where the fracture network can be less transmissive from the mining horizon up (Hebblewhite, 2020). The fractured zone shares similar fracturing regime but different heights in varying models: HoF is 30 to 58 times of the mining height (t) based on Australian, Soviet and UK experience (Kendorski, 1993, 2006), and 21 to 33 t according to the field measurements in NSW Central Coast, Australia (Galvin, 2016). Some Australian longwall mines adopt Ditton model (Ditton and Merrick, 2014) (Equations 1.1 and 1.2 in Table 1) sourcing from NSW coalfield experience for HoF prediction, while Liu model (Liu, 1981) (Equations 2.1 to 2.4 in Table 1) developed from 27 coalmines in China is frequently used by Chinese coalmines.

The measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations is a key responsibility of geotechnical and mining engineers. A critical aspect of these roles is to ensure there is sufficient ground support capacity for the expected demand.Current methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability-limits require measuring displacement at distinct points, or using visual observations. These current methods limit the assessment to a qualitative interpretation of deformation across the entire excavation.Recent advancements of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDar) technology permit a new method for monitoring deformation that allow a full 3D image of extended sections of an excavation to be precisely scanned. The results from the comparison with subsequent scans provide valuable information on the magnitude, direction and extent of regions exceeding the ground support serviceability-limits. This new method now provides a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation being monitored.The implementation of regular scanning has been demonstrated to be highly advantageous not only at mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid seismic induced deformation. The use of LiDar technology as a routine deformation measurement tool for geotechnical and mining engineers (and further applications) are discussed in more detail in this paper.CITATION:Jones, E and Beck, D, 2017. The Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic McArthur Basin contains a thick (-10 km) intracratonic platform cover sequence of unmetamorphosed and relatively undeformed sedimentary and volcanic rocks (Pietsch et al, 1991). It covers an area exceeding 180 000 km2 of the North Australian Craton (Figure 1), overlying segments of the older deformed basement and transitional igneous units. Volcanism in the basin (including transitional domain) followed a four-phase pattern. These phases are geologically distinct and widely distributed, and are also recognised beyond the McArthur Basin in many similar-aged tectonic provinces in northern Australia. The four phases are described briefly below. Regional and structural nomenclature used refers to Figure 1. A stratigraphic correlation diagram is presented in Figure 2.

Since the introduction of Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) in 1991, the market for lithium-ion cells has been driven by the high demand for portable electronic devices and more recently for batteries for the electric car industry. It is expected to grow rapidly to reach 2600 GWh globally by 2030 (US Government, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, 2021). However, there is a desperate need to recycle LIBs to recover valuable cathode materials and graphite. For this reason, several physical and chemical recycling technologies have been proposed to recover these materials from spent batteries. Amongst these, froth flotation technology is a potential cost-effective technology for separation of the graphite fraction from the lithium oxide components due to the natural hydrophobicity of graphite and density difference between graphite and cathode materials (Folayan et al, 2021).

This paper aims to highlight the global exploration opportunities that exist in connection with Ural-Alaskan (UA)-type intrusions. The key economic importance of UA intrusions is the existence of metallic platinum (mainly iron-platinum alloys) associated generally with chromite mineralisation and located within a dunite core, especially its coarse-grained part. Being very dense and resistant to erosion, platinum can form rich placers as the intrusion erodes. Big multimillion ounce placer platinum deposits of this type have historically been successfully mined for many years (eg Russia, Colombia and Alaska).However, large-scale exploration and mining of platinum placers currently occurs only in the Russian Far East. Outside of Russia, there is now little or no understanding of this type of deposit and its economic importance. Using successful operations in Russia as examples, it is demonstrated that there are many opportunities for similar discoveries all around the world, especially around the Pacific Rim, where such intrusions tend to be concentrated. Examples of highly prospective areas in eastern Australia and New Zealand are given. The paper outlines the various ways in which this is accomplished including the preparation of detriment submissions for pending land claim hearings, the use of promotional material to support access to Aboriginal Land for NTGS Mapping Programs and field work, and advice/assistance on exploration and mining issues.

This paper gives a brief description of VirtuoBlast technology ù a new, automated and highly interactive stereo vision technology which has been developed in CSIRO Exploration and Mining. VirtuoBlast technology is an integration of three advanced technologies - close-range digital terrestrial photogrammetry, oblique stereo imaging or high-speed stereo imaging, and temporal-spatial image matching technique. VirtuoBlast has been developed for the automated 3D measurement of blasting through rapid collection, processing, analysis and visualisation of 3D data related to blasting. A major field trial has been undertaken in August 1998 at the KCGM super pit. The field trial involved three applications of the technology, namely, pre-blast 3D surface mapping; post-blast 3D performance measurement; and temporal-spatial modelling of dynamic blasting process. This paper presents some results from this trial with emphasis on the application of VirtuoBlast technology to pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement. Application to the temporal-spatial 3D modelling of dynamic blasting process will be presented in a separate paper. Pre- and post-blast surface models derived using both VirtuoBlast technology and conventional field survey method are presented. The differences in results using the two mapping methods clearly show that the digital photogrammetric technique has many advantages over conventional survey methods. Results of pre- and post-blast from the field trial have demonstrated the potential of VirtuoBlast technology to efficiently perform pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement of production blasts. Demonstrated applications of VirtuoBlast technology to automated 3D measurement of blasting are showing an exciting future in advancing blasting science and modern blast design. The basic technologies are in place, however, continued improvements to the functionality, robustness and outputs are needed. The challenge is to build on the current state-of-the-art, by developing techniques and hardware which can be easily transferred to and implemented by the mining community. Current and future research and development will see improvements in imaging systems, automatic image processing and 3D data analysis.

Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

This paper summarises the information about current state of eco-environmental problems, geological disaster and mining waste causing during the process of limestone mining. By comparing the management experiences of limestone mines in other countries, management problems in China have been discussed and improved management options have been proposed here. Predicting the spatial distribution of rock mass properties in cave mining is a critical challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel machine learning-based model to advance our comprehension of rock behaviour. This model specifically focuses on the spatial distribution of rock mass and mechanical properties, a crucial aspect of our understanding of rock mechanics. Our model is inspired by the recognition that neighbouring information serves as crucial prior knowledge for predicting the spatial distribution of these properties, wherein closer neighbours are likely to exhibit similar characteristics. To effectively capture and model these neighbour relationships, we design a neural network-based model to map the spatial locations within the data set into a new highdimensional space. Within this transformed space, we utilise Euclidean distance to identify N neighbours. Leveraging these neighbours, we introduce a straightforward yet highly effective approach—label propagation—to construct a graph that illustrates neighbour relationships. This graph not only facilitates the prediction of the spatial distribution of rock mass properties but also offers a measure of uncertainty for these predictions. We validate the proposed method using a real rock data set and showcase its efficacy in capturing intricate relationships and distributions within rock properties, enabling precise predictions across diverse spatial scales. Our results underscore the potential of machine learning-based approaches to revolutionise the field of rock mechanics, providing valuable insights applicable to geotechnical engineering, mining, and other sectors where an accurate understanding of rock properties is paramount. This model has direct practical implications, offering a new tool for geotechnical engineers and mining professionals to enhance their understanding and prediction of rock properties, thereby improving safety and efficiency in their operations.

The German mining industry uses different residues for backfilling and stowing. A hydraulic pipe conveying technology for these materials has shown advantages for the transportation into the mine. Pipeline conveying systems are able to bridge long distances, they save room within the underground workings and they save staff and costs. Absolutely necessary for successful use of the hydraulic conveying technology is the knowledge about the unusual non-Newtonian flow properties of solid/liquid mixtures like pastes and slurries. The flow resistance of these materials cannot be described easily by one viscosity. Owing to a yield point and a pseudo-plastic behaviour the viscosity changes with the shear rate and with the streaming velocity inside the pipe. Also these flow behaviours depend very sensitively on the liquid/solid-ratio, often so dramatically that gravimetric or volumetric dosing equipment is not in a position to control the production of backfill pastes. Quality changes of the solid raw materials (particle size distribution, density, mineralogical composition) lead to additional difficulties. The first experiences with hydraulic backfilling plants were troubled by plugged pipes, a bad backfill quality caused by unnecessarily high water content and high costs for chemical binders to solidify the backfill. The installation of viscosity controlled paste production leads to success with the hydraulic backfill technology. A development of the DMT, a bypass pipe-viscometer, has been the key technology. The system is able to analyse on-line, difficult, sticky and abrasive substances and determine their non-Newtonian flow properties. Because the system measures real physical values it is in a position to pre-calculate process relevant parameters like the pressure drop of the backfilling paste in the conveying pipeline. Newer types of the viscometer system also measure the slurry density and calculate its composition. These systems have proven a success controlling backfill paste production plants. They offer a secure prevention of pipeline plugging and a production of high quality backfill pastes with a water content as low as possible.

Dissatisfied with conventional wet processing methods for alluvial deposits, Resource Trend Pty Ltd of Cairns set out to develop a better process. After comprehensive investigation of existing dry techniques the principals have now developed a rotary dry concentrator that can handle the fine-grained fraction of alluvial deposits as well as the coarse. Four of these units have been mounted on an integrated towable treatment plant which has been in successful commercial operation for four years in northern Queensland. A second plant is now under construction for use in the United States. Grades of less than 0.2 g/lcm have been profitably mined at throughputs of about 80 cubic metres per hour and 85 per cent availability. The operation runs round the clock with an establishment of four. Major benefits, apart from lower capital and operating costs, are environmental. Ore is picked up, treated, and replaced in its original mixed condition within 25 m of its initial location. Rehabilitation is completed almost immediately behind the plant as it advances, leaving no slimes dams, coarse stockpiles, or haul roads. In 1993 the company won a Premier's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Queensland Mining Industry. The principal disadvantage is moisture, and the company is now actively seeking deposits in the deserts of the world. In Queensland mining is normally possible only for six months of the year.

In 1944 some ten or so pieces of legislation impacted on the mining industry. Today in excess of 80 in one way or another apply to the Northern Territory miner. This paper will look at the nature of the legislation that has been introduced and the reasons for its introduction. During the Second World War the mining of resources such as iron, tin etc for the war effort set the platform for the subsequent expansion of the industry in the post-war years. Thereafter, the change in attitudes over the years that have resulted from a more conscious public and more responsible governments and developers associated with the recognition of the legal rights of others and the threat of litigation, will be traced. With a major review of the Northern Territory Mining Act currently in progress, this paper will view ANZMEC's foreshadowed preference for a National Code and the NT's intent of drawing some commonalities with other states of Australia to achieve this aim. Finally, the questions of over-regulation and whether existing legislation is complete will be addressed. From this it is foreshadowed how legislation may develop during the lead into the 21st century.

The imperative to operate sustainably requires all equipment and processes to operate at their maximum possible efficiency. Achieving this ideal state requires a thorough understanding, not only of the process itself, but also of the tools available to design and assess potential improvements. This paper presents a case where the widely employed Discrete Element Method (DEM) toolset proved insufficient to model problematic material flow during the process of optimising wet screening performance. A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model was found to more accurately replicate the flow characteristics of the physical system. Site observations identified biased loading of the screen decks to cause inefficiencies in the wet screening of an iron ore processing circuit. Two numerical modelling approaches were pursued with the aim to select the most suitable one and continue the optimisation process based on that selected model. Selection criteria were established, based on the minimum requirements of being able to replicate the problem, including the main flow dynamics deemed to cause the issue. The DEM model was found to over-simplify the slurry flow dynamics within the scrubber and no laterally biased flow was introduced by the scrubber’s rotation to the otherwise symmetric system. Since DEM was not able to accurately replicate the existing problem, it was deemed an unsuitable method to assess the effect of any changes to the system. The second approach consisted of a SPH model. This model was deemed to map the flow within the scrubber with sufficient accuracy to address the problem, as it produced biased screen loading comparable to that reported from site. Changes to the wet chute, delivering material from the scrubber to the screen, aimed to neutralise the non-centrality introduced via the scrubber, were then successfully designed and assessed using the SPH model.
