A number of suggestions have been made to improve the design of cells used for electro winning and electro refining of metals. Most of these designs have been aimed at increasing the current density used in order to improve cell capacity, although the purpose of some has been to produce electro deposited metals in a continuous manner. The Mt Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Following the evolution of the mine plan through a number of stages, the ‘sublevel shrinkage (SLS) with continuous fill’ mining method was implemented in 2010 to extract the Mt Wright orebody. The production front in this mining method is similar to a sublevel cave (SLC) operation; however, backfill is placed into the top of the production zone as opposed to requiring the overlying strata to cave.Continuous fill to replace the void created by extracting the ore was required to manage the potential risks associated with the proximity of infrastructure to the footwall, associated long-term stability and air blast potential due to the limited ‘cavability’ of the material within the cave zone. The available fill material was sourced from a disused waste dump from a previous open pit operation, which introduced further technical and economic risks associated with dilution from ‘no grade’ broken material. Procedures and processes to manage these risks have been incorporated into the operation of the mine.Despite encountering a number of challenges, the SLS method has been in use for approximately three years at Mt Wright and has proven to be viable economically, technically and operationally. Narrow vein gold mineralisation generally contains both fine (<100 ¦m) and coarse (>100 ¦m) gold particles. The in situ size and shape, deportment, distribution and abundance of the particles controls deposit sampling characteristics, grade distribution and metallurgical properties. Particles can range from individual disseminated grains, clusters of particles and masses above 1 cm in size. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for very coarse particles. Deposits generally show a background grade of mineralisation dominated by disseminated fine gold particles. Drilling will resolve the background grade well, though is likely to considerably understate the grade related to the coarser gold particles. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on metallurgy, with key factors affecting recovery being particle size, deportment, liberation parameters and silver content of gold minerals. For coarse gold particles the focus should be on liberation and the early removal of the particles from the mill circuit by gravity concentrators and gold traps. Finer particles will require more grinding to liberate prior to flotation or cyanide extraction. The determination of gold particle sizing is thus required to minimise evaluation and geometallurgical uncertainty and lower project risk.

From many years practical industrial experience the author has drawn together a list of the key points to consider when embarking on a large-scale geometallurgical project. Fundamental aspects which must be considered include (but are not limited to):understanding the variability of the orebody both laterally and with depth;comminution properties and variability;flotation properties, requirements and variability – differing ore zones may have substantially different requirements for optimal performance;the role of texture – the consequences of both grain size and distribution and how the circuit will handle these;realistic expectation in terms of the financial requirements and time frame results are required within; andintegration of, and communication between key personnel within the various departments of the site (mining, geology and processing) is a fundamental aspect of any geometallurgically based processing system. An example of a highly complex nickel sulfide ore will be used as the basis of discussion.

The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

Within the Mesa J pisolitic iron ore mine, clay is distributed unevenly throughout the deposit and often forms as pods and channels less than 10 m in width. The mine resource model, based on 50 m + 50 m spaced drilling, has been unable to accurately delineate the clay for scheduling and mining purposes. Therefore, alternative methods for mapping the clay-contaminated ore were sought. Predictive clay mapping will significantly reduce production costs at Mesa J through improved selective mining practices, more accurate scheduling, reduced wear on mining equipment and minimising the need for maintenance of haul roads and ramps. High lateral resolution electromagnetic (EM) surveying using a Geonics EM31 instrument can quickly and inexpensively delineate the extent and orientation of the clays. Preliminary results indicate that a block model based on the interpretation of the EM data can accurately predict the distribution, volume and tonnage of ore and waste material. While rip-line mapping, infill drilling, ground penetrating radar and gravity can delineate clay with various degrees of success, none were as efficient as EM31.

Only a few complex real options can be valued using closed-form equations, such as the Black and Scholes formula, because these algorithms are restrictive and prevent the construction of practical project evaluation models. Although a binomial lattice method paired with the ærisk-neutral probabilityÆ provides an easier and flexible modelling of exploration and mining projects, it has limitations when projects are complex, long-lived and influenced by the interplay of various market and private uncertainties. In order to overcome these limitations, modern decision tree software using dynamic programming capability can be used for real option valuations. This is a powerful computational tool in which the impact of various sources of uncertainties can be differentiated, so that the optimal decision path can be explicitly displayed visually. There has been significant academic controversy surrounding whether different real option (RO) valuation methods would lead to different real option values (ROV). This paper, using a realistic copper mining example, demonstrates that as long as the same degree of subjectivity and consistency are used in different real option valuation methods, they yield the same result. This conclusion is valid irrespective of whether the cash flow volatility generated by various sources of uncertainties is handled in an aggregated or in an explicit and differentiated manner. This paper compares two choices for an investor either to æbuy now and developÆ a project or to enter into a ætwo-year option to purchaseÆ after the proponents have developed it. It also shows how significantly different net after-tax operating cash flows may be generated by these different choices on the same underlying asset represented by the project. This is due to the difference in the amount and timing of the relevant capital investments affecting the depreciation and amortisation charges and as a consequence, the income tax paid. The induration furnace for iron ore pellets was originally designed to process concentrates with high contents of magnetite. To support the use of haematite concentrates, internal fuel was added to the pellets in the form of ground coke breeze or anthracite. To ensure that the addition of coke breeze was not excessive, the ‘heat of magnetite equivalent’ or heat of magnetite equivalent (HME) relationship was developed, guaranteeing that the fi ring temperature requirements remained the same. However, this oversimplifi es the different reaction paths of magnetite and carbon in iron ore pellets. At fi ring temperatures, gas diffusion controlled reactions such as the combustion of coke, the calcination of carbonates and the reduction and oxidation of iron oxides can all occur in different parts of the pellet simultaneously. The interaction of these reactions produces a range of atmospheres across the diameter of the pellet that vary from oxidising at the pellet shell to reducing at the pellet core. Mathematical modelling and pellet fi ring experiments to preheat temperatures before quenching have shown that a higher proportion of coke relative to magnetite slows down the oxidation process, irrespective of temperature. A higher temperature, however, results in an increase in the rate of haematite reduction in the pellet core and a more reducing atmosphere, which could lead to different sintering rates in different parts of the pellet and shrinkage cracks forming. To observe these gas-solid reaction rates at a larger scale, the COREM pot grate has been updated with an additional oxygen analyser. This, along with other improvements, will allow better optimisation of straight-grate firing cycles for different pellet compositions.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

This paper attempts to draw together the experience of over 30 years of research and practice in the United Kingdom on the rehabilitation of abandoned metalliferous mining wastes. The reliance on water when the mines were operating has implications for water quality and the techniques used to restore sites to alleviate the principal impacts of the mines. Drivers of reclamation included concerns about human health from wind blown dust and pollution of watercourses as well as perceptions of dereliction. Techniques of reclamation used involved removal of spoil from near to surface watercourses, capping of spoil, diversion of watercourses, use of impermeable membranes, prevention of surface sinks into underground workings and the use of constructed wetlands. The issues to be dealt with in mine reclamation have become more complex and sometimes diverge. The schemes in the 1990s described have been effective in dealing with pollution from spoil heaps and small but significant adit discharges; however, significant issues, particularly those of large flows of polluted water from mine sites, still need to be dealt with. Although the paper describes the legacy of mining, which largely finished in the late 19th/early 20th century, similar issues but on a larger scale are to be found in more recent mining, for example Eastern Europe. In many of these areas minerals still remain to be won and dealing with this legacy may fall on new mining developments.

Potential waste rock products from the mining of epithermal deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are characterised to facilitate their management. Hydrothermally altered andesites and their weathered near surface equivalents have been examined from the Golden Cross, Karangahake and Monawai gold deposits. These materials vary in both their clay content (smectite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite) and the degree of silicification resulting from alteration and weathering. The simulated degradation (slaking tests) of waste materials cannot be explained purely by consideration of clay content, siliciflcation, or the resultant variations in porosity.   Microstructure is considered to be essential in predicting the physical degradation of waste rock. The scanning electron microscope is an effective tool in such an investigation. Increasing alteration results in clay particles becoming more randomly orientated (matrix microstructure); this causes a reduction in the surface area of contacts between components resulting in increased potential for degradation. The extent of skeletal microstructure (commonly characteristic of weathering) is an important control on effective porosity and the long term potential for degradation. Management requirements for these materials include the minimisation of moisture content variations (with the prevention of initial drying being of primary importance) and the containment of sediments produced.

Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. The acceptable accordance between the comminution model results and the reality showed that this method is convenient in predicting the secondary fragmentation in block caving.CITATION:Castro, R, Gómez, R, Casali, A and Hekmat, A, 2016. In mining operations, the removal of overburden to expose the ores is achieved by rock blasting using ammonium nitrate based explosives, eg ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures, commonly known as ANFO. However, ammonium nitrate can react with pyritic shales that are often found in many mines, leading to premature detonation or spontaneous explosion. In order to minimise the occurrence of spontaneous explosion, the reactivity of the shale in a mine must be assessed. This will provide a better understanding of blasting risks and thus will improve the safety and the cost efficiency of blasting through the selection of appropriate explosives. In this study, shale samples were collected from different locations in Western AustraliaÆs Mt Whaleback iron ore mine and geochemically characterised. The reactivity of the shale samples towards ammonium nitrate and ANFO was investigated using a combination of large-scale firing range tests and laboratory isothermal reactor tests. Results of the firing range tests show that the reactive ingredients of the shale are the limiting factor for the reactions between shale and ANFO. Based on the firing range test results, further isothermal reactor tests were conducted to investigate the reactivity of shale samples towards ammonium nitrate under controlled conditions. Analysis of the results from the firing range tests and the isothermal reactor tests shows that there are correlations between the reactivity of shale samples and several geochemical characteristics such as sulfate, sulfur, ferrous and zinc content.

The geotechnical factors controlling the design of the open pit slopes of the Pasminco Century Mine near Lawn Hill, Queensland are presented below. Pasminco Century is a stratiform shale hosted zinc deposit in the Lawn Hill Formation that is overlain in part by the Thorntonia Limestone Formation. Both the mineralisation and overburden is located within a competent rock mass such that intact rock strength and discontinuity spacing is generally sufficient to prevent large-scale slope failure by breakage through the rock mass. Rather, overall slope stability issues are dominated by the major discontinuities within the rock mass. The deposit is located in a structurally complex regime, it consists of a synclinal basin which is truncated by easterly striking normal faults through its centre and northern and southern limits and by an unconformity on its eastern and western margins. Deposit geometry and slope stability is further complicated by small-scale folding, a pattern of northeast and southeast striking subvertical faults and north easterly dipping thrust faults with their associated fault emplaced blocks of Lawn Hill Formation in the overburden. The large size of the deposit requires a staged mining approach with the excavation of both final pit walls around the external sides of each stage and interim pit walls along the internal boundaries between adjacent stages. The deposit geometry and major discontinuities control not only the final pit wall design but also interim wall location and orientation, excavation sequence and in some stages the excavation schedule. Two and three-dimensional limit equilibrium stability analyses were conducted using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to determine appropriate pit wall design criteria and to select a suitable excavation sequence and schedule.

The Manantial Espejo district (Argentina) hosts a low-sulfidation epithermal Ag (-Au) deposit with a proven and probable reserve of 38 Moz Ag and 0.55 Moz Au. The district lies along the southern rim of the Deseado Massif in the Middle to Late Jurassic Chon Aike Province, a large bimodal igneous province dominated by silicic volcanic rocks that were formed during the initial extension leading to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The district stratigraphy consists of 162 to 161 Ma old rhyodacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks of the Chon Aike and La Matilde Formations, followed by 160 to 157 Ma old andesites and dacites of the informally called intermediate formation. The main stage of normal faulting post-dates the volcanic activity and coincides with the formation of the precious metal veins that were dated by 40Ar/39Ar on hydrothermal adularia with ages between 152.8 ¦ 0.8 Ma and 156.6 ¦ 0.8 Ma. Economically important hydrothermal veins show characteristic features of a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit with crustiform and colloform banding, bladed calcite replaced by quartz and abundant adularia. In the Maria Vein, the major orebody of the district, six hydrothermal stages are identified, but only stages one and four contributed metal. Lead isotope ratios in hydrothermal sulfides show a close relationship to ratios in feldspars from the district Chon Aike Formation, suggesting a common source for the Pb and possibly the precious metals in both the magmatic and hydrothermal products, or that the Pb in the hydrothermal veins was derived from the volcanic rocks. The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF hatching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid hatching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically rccmer isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

"This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. Commercial explosives range from pure emulsions to pure ANFO, with blends of these providing interesting alternatives: energy is often adjusted through addition of aluminium, or the control of density. The energy rating of explosives is derived chiefly from detonation codes, which are used to derive expressions for the internal energy change of the detonation products as they do work under expansion. While all codes used for this purpose work on the basis of Ideal detonation, it is common knowledge that commercial explosives operate in the Non-Ideal domain, which affects the mode of energy delivery to the environment. However, since Ideality represents the foundation from which actual performance evolves, it is valuable to examine the intrinsic energy release of a formulation before attempting to understand the influence of Non-Ideality. In examining the Ideal pressure profile of fundamental formulations, remarkable correlation has been found with field performance, and this increases understanding of the influence of various formulation modifications, especially in regard to the stage at which energy is released, and the effect on rockbreaking. This work has emphasised the value of attempting to understand and define better the non-ideal detonation process.

Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. The discovery of copper and nickel sulphides in the Riwaka Complex in 1967 led to considerable exploration activity by a number of companies. Various exploration techniques used by these companies are summarised and discussed. Activity of these companies shows that mineralisation is mainly confined to the southern, ultramafic section of the Riwaka Complex where geological mapping recognised sixteen units within, or associated with the Riwaka Complex. Significant pyrrhotite, pentlandite chalcopyrite mineralisation is restricted to biotite feldspar pyroxenites and to clinopyroxenite units. Lesser and more erratically distributed pyrite chalcopyrite pyrrhotite mineralisation occurs in poikilitic pyroxene hornblendites, melanocratic gabbros, and in marginal diorite lenses. It is suggested that a linear belt of layered ultramafic and mafic rocks described in Fiordland by Williams (1974) may be a southern extension of the Riwaka Complex. The Riwaka Complex has been classified as belonging to the Picritic subtype, (Tholeiitic suite), of Naldrett and Cabri, (1976), and as such it is concluded that it exhibits substantial potential for the discovery of economic copper and nickel deposits. It is considered that the complex is a multiphase differentiated intrusion emplaced in a major tensional fracture zone that developed in a relatively stable tectonic environment, namely a succession of middle Paleozoic shallow water shelf sediments. Based on sparse available evidence it is suggested that the Riwaka Complex was intruded in the lower to middle Permian. It is further suggested that the tensional fracturing was initiated by the onset of subduction process which were responsible for the development of the Permian volcanic arcs and ophiolite belt in the north west Nelson area.
