The approach to the disposal and storage of mine tailings is slowly evolving. Tailings disposal has been based on minimising short-term capital and operating costs, with rehabilitation costs discounted by the application of a high discount factor in a net present value approach to accounting. This has led to the widespread adoption of surface tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to store slurried tailings delivered by robust and cheap centrifugal pumps and pipelines. Depending on the site climate, rate of rise of the tailings, nature of the tailings and the extent to which supernatant water is removed from the surface TSF, the tailings may or may not dewater, densify and gain strength. High rates of rise of dilute tailings to a facility used to store both tailings and supernatant water results in a wet, low-density, soft tailings deposit that not only occupies a large storage volume but also presents rehabilitation difficulties. A low tailings density results in high containment wall costs, very high rehabilitation costs and a low potential for future land use or ecological function. Overall, the cost of slurried tailings disposal, thought to be low, is actually high. However, low rates of rise, even of dilute tailings, in a dry climate with efficient supernatant water removal can produce a dewatered, high-density, stiff tailings deposit that may occupy a large footprint but to shallow depth that is relatively easy to rehabilitate. There are advantages in dewatering tailings in the processing plant to recover process water and chemicals, facilitate tailings disposal in a more solid form and facilitate rehabilitation. However, the cost of dewatering in-plant can be high, and the process water may not lend itself to reuse. There are also advantages in removing supernatant water to facilitate solar and wind drying of exposed tailings, although water is lost to evaporation and the dried tailings may best be harvested prior to inundation by fresh tailings or rainfall run-off. ‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. Sprayed concrete has played an integral role in underground rock support for nearly a century. However, concrete is also considered to be one of the biggest environmental problems in construction and mining, largely because of the high carbon footprint of cement and aggregates production. This is driving the industry to find ways to cut concrete usage where possible. Improving sustainability by cutting concrete material consumption also reduces application time and costs. Improving concrete properties can make it possible to design thinner linings, but as awareness of safety and longer design lifetimes are driving developments in the opposite direction, it is not realistic to see this as a major factor in cutting concrete consumption. More accessible solutions are focusing on layer thickness control and minimising rebound and wastage. Digital technology and innovation offer excellent tools for improving sustainability while optimising other aspects of the spraying process at the same time. A digital layer thickness control system gives near-real-time information to the sprayer operator with full coverage of the sprayed surface. This enables the operator to achieve consistent layer thickness on the first pass, in comparison to the traditional methods of overspraying with the aim of achieving sufficient layer thickness, probe drilling after the concrete has set, and respraying at a later stage if needed. Operator competence is the single biggest variable in a successful sprayed concrete process, affecting rebound and wastage levels. Unfortunately, the learning curve to become a master sprayer is quite steep and training on a real sprayer and real concrete requires a significant amount of time and money. Training in a virtual reality (VR) environment enables operator training to be carried out in a low-risk environment and provides a way of measuring performance and assessing and certifying the operators. After the VR training period, a novice nozzle operator has the basic understanding to start working on a real sprayer, and an experienced nozzle operator can benefit from the possibility of assessing their performance.

The amount of material extracted from each blasted ring in sublevel caving mines is vital when deciding the overall mine production target. The orientation of the production drifts is normally perpendicular to the strike of the orebody, and rings are blasted from the hanging wall side to the footwall side in a retreating manner. For an inclined orebody, a given ring will contain different amounts of material based on its relative position along the production drift. This layout creates a distinctive problem with respect to the extraction ratio optimisation along the axis of the production drift. This paper describes the current drawpoint control strategy practiced at LKAB and presents the variation of drawpoint performance parameters along the production drifts. It uses automatically generated data from a bucket weighing system that measures tonnage drawn per bucket, and it classifies the blasted rings into four zones based on their relative position along the production drift. It considers the loading procedure for blasted rings at Kiirunavaara mine and analyses the variations in drawpoint performance along the production drift. This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. In recent years there have been many changes in mine ownership due to the on-going rationalisation towards larger mining companies. Larger companies inevitably find it hard to manage small mining operations and in many cases smaller mines do not fit corporate resource, production and profit criteria. Smaller companies are more suited to managing these medium or small scale mines and are tendering for the purchase or lease of mines that larger companies wish to dispose of. In addition to these factors there has also been a trend (especially in Western Australia) for mines to continue operating at ever increasing depths. This in turn has led to more mines operating in high stress environments and experiencing damaging seismicity. Assessing the viability of seismically active mines from a takeover or purchase point of view should involve analysing the risk profile of every aspect on mining that could be affected by adverse seismicity. This includes assessing current and alternative mining methods, mine designs, support systems, extraction sequencing, monitoring and blasting. This paper includes discussion on items that need to be assessed when considering the purchase of seismically active mines, with experience gained from some recent studies in Western Australia. In these cases it was apparent that quantification of previous seismic history on itÆs own was a totally inadequate method of assessing minewide seismic risk potential. A more holistic approach is required, taking into account all aspects of relevant data, all the minewide effects of seismic activity and all possible means of mitigating those effects.

When executing a ventilation change the mine ventilation circuit is in a state of flux throughout the entire change period with discrete mine areas both under ventilated and/or over ventilated during the change process. Whilst routine risk reduction strategies such as removing electrical power and people from the mine are commonly deployed it is wise to complete the change in the shortest practical time frame. This not only minimises the chance of unacceptable concentrations of contaminants accumulating around the mine but reduces the impedance on production activities which are routinely suspended during these change periods. This paper firstly highlights the importance of the maintenance of an accurate ventilation model and discusses issues which should be considered to assist to maintain in it a suitable state of health. Further it provides some tips on how to monitor that your model is in an acceptable state of tune so that it can be confidently deployed in the change process. Finally, it details the sequential process how a finely tuned and accurate ventilation model can be utilised to carry out major ventilation changes according to appliance pressure adjustments only and without the need to constantly measure and check resultant branch flows throughout the whole change process. Also discussed are some simple practical tips which will help ensure that the ventilation change process will go according to the devised plan on the day and in the most appropriate order including checking the efficiency and accuracy of the change, after it is completed.

As cities become more populated and the need for tunnelling increases, we continue to dig deeper urban tunnels in more challenging ground conditions. At the same time our expectations for durability and long-term performance are increasing.It has become increasingly apparent in recent years that repairing water leaks in tunnels can be very costly and unplanned infiltration can cause undesirable outcomes for long-term maintenance costs, structural durability and environmental impacts. For this reason, tunnel constructors are investing more time and effort upfront into drainage and waterproofing systems.Tunnel membrane systems are becoming accepted as a necessary part of tunnel construction, however the knowledge surrounding selection of appropriate systems, design detailing and installation methods has not increased at the same rate. Currently Australia relies heavily on International Standards from Europe and the United States with no immediate program in place to establish our own locally relevant industry standards.This paper gives an overview of where the industry in Australasia is heading in terms of adopting relevant standards. Current basic waterproof detailing options for drained and undrained tunnels with success and failure of various methods are also addressed. Finally we look at the Brisbane Airport Link as a case study for how tunnel waterproofing contract methods, design and installation issues are being addressed in context with recent projects including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link in Sydney, Auckland Northern Gateway Tunnel, Eastlink Tunnel in Melbourne and Sydney City West Cable Tunnel.This paper’s primary objective is to propose guidelines for how tunnel waterproofing could be implemented on large infrastructure projects in the future and to map a path for preparing and introducing a ready to use document for selecting appropriate tunnel membrane and drainage systems whilst implementing detailing methods which are appropriate for local conditions.

The rapid production and accumulation of mineral processing wastes in the environment can present serious threats to environmental quality and human health. Phytostabilisation with native plant ecosystems is, in many cases, a preferred option for rehabilitation of mine waste storage facilities. However, much of the literature has focused on species selection in short-term experiments to test their suitability under the often extreme chemical conditions in the wastes without addressing the fundamental requirements – ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation and functional root zones. As a result, successful examples of phytostabilisation of mine wastes such as base metal tailings have been rare, especially if success is defined as meeting the completion criteria of non-polluting and sustainable land system at rehabilitated sites. Conventional capping options to isolate reactive tailings/wastes by using physical break and/or sealing layers are often not reliable in the long term (particularly under semi-arid climatic conditions) and, in many cases, they may not be feasible in the field due to the large areas to be covered and the lack of adequate suitable materials at mine sites. By using sulfidic tailings as an example, we have proposed a new paradigm for phytostabilising mine wastes – ecologically engineered pedogenesis in tailings involving accelerated physical, chemical and biological weathering of tailings minerals to achieve hydrogeochemical stabilisation and the development of soil functions, soil horizons and functional root zones.Ecologically engineering functional root zones firstly requires controlling geochemical reactivity in the wastes (ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation), which can cause polluting effects in the root zone and plant toxicity. By means of ecological engineering, in situ weathering of primary minerals (eg pyrites) in tailings may be accelerated by adding functional materials (eg functionalised biochars and organic matter) in the waste slurry during the process of deposition. This will remove or diminish key risk factors (eg potential acidity in tailings and elevated soluble heavy metals) in the solid phase, before placing growth media for reconstructing root zones and transplanting/sowing target plant species. However, much of the acidity, soluble metals/metalloids and other salts would be transported out of the solid phase into the wastewater, which can be addressed by on-site water treatment facilities during mine operation. The trajectory and state of engineered pedogenesis in the weathered tailings may be manipulated to provide specific soil horizons within future root zones that are dynamically evolved toward fully functional soil subsystem within rehabilitated plant ecosystems.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Zhou, L and Mulligan, D, 2014. The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

Disposal of mine water is a worldwide problem occurring in the coal and gold as well in the metal ore mining areas. Since southern Africa is a (semi) arid region, mining effluents should be treated to qualities such that they can be used for agricultural purposes or that they can be discharged in river system. Studies have shown that partly treated acid mine water can be used for irrigation. A copper mine in Botswana plans to use 5 M/d of treated mine effluent for the irrigation of agricultural product. The results of this study showed that when applying the biological sulfate removal technology the produced sulfide precipitated the metals in the mine effluent, such as nickel, Zn and Mn, to metal sulfide (MeS).

The McArthur, Balma (new name) and Habgood Groups are thick (up to 4.5 km) correlative sequences of shallow water evaporitic carbonates, mudstones and sandstones that are exposed largely within the Batten, and southern and northern Walker Fault Zones (Batten and Walker Troughs) of the McArthur Basin respectively. Recent re-mapping of the Walker Fault Zone has provided data for refined stratigraphic correlations between these groups. Two significant hiatuses are now recognised within the Balma Group (base of Vaughton Siltstone and base of Yarrawirrie Formation) and these may represent tectonically-generated sequence boundaries which may correlate with similar local hiatuses within the McArthur Group such as at the base of the Teena Dolomite and Lynott Formation respectively.

The principles, fields of application and equipment design concepts of several new approaches to continuous vacuum treatments of molten metals and alloys are discussed. Partic- ular attention is paid to the results of pilot plant tests evaluating a launder-in-tube method of 1. continuous production of refined zinc from a zinc-bearing lead produced in the lead splash condenser of the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF), and 2. continuous refining of crude cadmium. The former trials were not sufficiently encouraging to justify consideration of the process for commercial development. The applic- ation to cadmium upgrading gave very promising results; metal of 99.99 per cent purity was produced continuously at pilot scale (120 lb per hour) from crude metal containing 5.0 per cent Pb.

A pilot plant has been constructed for the low temperature carboni-zation of Wallarah (N,S,W6) coal at the rate of 300 pounds per hour. The plant was built and tested at Australian Mineral Development Laboratories for Broken Hill Pty, Ltd. Char product was required within the specifi-cation 15.5 `S' 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was based c atz an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and U.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers at Denver, U.S.A. The method involved the carbonizatioan of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor.. The heat required for carbonization of tits coal was supplied to the be, both through the reactor walls and also by internal cambustion of products .

Rampura Agucha Pb-Zn Mine (RAM) is located about 200 km to the south-west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan, India. Open pit mining operations commenced in 1988 and continued to 2018. RAM open pit footprint is the largest in India with length of 2000 m, width 1500 m and depth of 400 m. Development of an underground mine under the operating pit commenced in 2013, through trial mining longhole open stoping with cemented backfill was established as a preferred mining method. Nine years in operations underground mine has reached the production capacity of 4.5 MT, which represent more than 70 per cent of the ore volume mined by the pit. RAM is currently the world second largest underground Pb-Zn mine.

The Tsugaru Tunnel, located on the Honshu island approach to the Seikan Tunnel, is 5,880 m long and has a "Shinkansen" cross section of 90 m2 area. The geological formation through which the tunnel passes consists of very soft rock most of which is unsolidified sandstone belonging to the Neogen. The permeability coefficient is in the range of 10-2 to 10-4 cm/s and being water bearing with a high ground water level, the ground is unstable and subject to soil outflow phenomenon. Kajima Corporation, undertaking the Futamata Construction Section (1,420 m long), excavated the tunnel by the upper half heading method with side pilots employing the following countermeasures to cope with these severe conditions.

In pursuit of optimising the cemented rockfill system fragmentation of the aggregate, while travelling through the surface-to-underground aggregate transport raise, was investigated and a æfines estimationÆ equation was determined. When used with the rockfill strength estimation equation, the fines estimation equation enables an accurate estimation of the compressive strength to be derived theoretically. Optimum fill raise orientation was examined and recommendations are given depending on the varying stope dimensions. If the maximum dimension of the stope is less than 30.5 m (100 ft), a single, centrally located fill raise will suffice. However, as the stope dimensions increase, the number and orientation of the fill raises becomes more complicated and each stope must be examined on an individual basis.

Mount Isa mine is the largest underground mine in Australia and is located 2,000 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. This mine has been in continuous operation since 1931 and in 1986/87 the silver/lead/zinc stream achieved the peak annual mining rate of 4.7 million tonnes. At present about fifteen different steeply dipping stratiform orebodies are being mined to maintain an annual production rate of around 3.0 million tonnes. Out of these, only two orebodies (2 & 5) are amenable to sub level open stoping (SLOS) type bulk mining methods. This year only 150,000 tonnes are scheduled from pillars and remnant areas but in future, more sources will be required to meet the budget production targets.

Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.
