The environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations of mining companies promote the consideration of water and land resources as well as the post-mining employment opportunities following the cessation of mining operations. This work aims to outline the potential for a mining operation to use their brackish mine water resources to support microalgae production, generating high-quality organic carbon sources to support their mine rehabilitation and closure outcomes. Microalgae production is an established commercial process for high-value products including vitamins, cosmetics and food supplements. On mine sites, microalgae production offers several major environmental and social opportunities: (i) carbon capture, (ii) metalliferous water treatment, (iii) acid mine drainage prevention, (iv) beneficial reuse of brackish mine water, (v) accelerated soil formation and (vi) post-mining employment (Levett et al, 2023).

In line with the 2015 Paris Agreement and corresponding climate disclosure requirements, many mining companies have publicly disclosed that they are developing and/or implementing ambitious decarbonisation strategies. Sometimes these strategies can be linked to the development of community programs and/or the creation of a positive legacy post-closure. Renewable power is key to most decarbonisation strategies – some mines will get this from external sources and others will establish on-site power generation and storage facilities. A range of options are available to develop renewable power generation (eg solar panel, wind farm, hydropower) and energy storage (eg battery, hydrogen, pumped hydroelectricity). Land access, impact assessments, planning and environmental approvals are required to establish new facilities. Host communities are more likely to be in favour of, or at least will accommodate, new power supply developments if these are planned with a benefit to the communities. Transitioning to renewables raises new challenges. Among these are high upfront costs and access to capital, energy demand variability, supply intermittency and variability, storage limitations, grid stability and reliability, transmission and distribution infrastructure constraints. Compounding these challenges are issues such as infrastructure resilience to extreme weather events (eg heat, wind), land use and access, lengthy permitting processes, community perceptions, skilled labour requirements, and meeting mine closure objectives. Renewable energy sources provide a more decentralised source of energy that reduces reliance on imported fuels, thereby increasing energy security and lowering production costs. On the contrary, implementing renewable energy could lead to potential negative impacts such as visual perception from the community, competitive land usage, electricity price raises due to upgrading infrastructure and the use of electricity storage capacities. As part of the definition of an environmental and social management plan, participative stakeholder engagement is required to identify benefits to the communities. For example, among the recognised benefits of developing solar panels (increase job opportunities, reduce soil erosion), various technologies have been experimented globally for the last ten years and are emerging due to their proven community benefits. Key findings to enhance those benefits can range from the development of innovative practices such as ‘agri-/aqua-voltaic’, ‘solar grazing’ to optimise land usage and stimulate the local economy (Table 1), to the implementation of technologies providing services to communities such as mobile water desalination plants or ‘smart grid’ systems to minimise energy clipping during peak-load of oversized renewable energy facilities (Table 2). While developing those synergies, careful management is required to avoid creating superfluous energy service needs from community programs. Energy sufficiency should remain a key principle according to the sufficiency, efficiency and renewable framework of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Darby and Fawcett (2018) define energy sufficiency has ‘a state in which people’s basic needs for energy services are met equitably and ecological limits are respected’. Sufficiency tackles the causes of the environmental impacts of human activities by avoiding the demand for energy and materials over the life cycle of buildings and goods. Efficiency tackles the symptoms of the environmental impacts of human activities by improving energy and material intensities. The third pillar, renewables, tackles the consequences of the environmental impacts of human activities by reducing the carbon intensity of energy supply (Cabeza et al, 2022). The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). This paper gives the background to the development of solvent extraction processes for the recovery of metals from aqueous solutions. Its growing importance in Australia for the recovery of both uranium and copper is dis- cussed, as well as the developments in mixer-settler design as applied to recent plants. The economic significance of solvent extraction as an alterna- tive to cementation is discussed and important features of each process are highlighted by comparison of costs for each process in a hypothetical situa- Tion.

Global steel companies are actively combating climate change by reducing carbon emissions. Traditional steel production, using the blast furnace (BF) – basic oxygen furnace (BOF) process, heavily depends on coal and emits substantial CO2. To mitigate this, companies are transitioning to the more eco-friendly DRP (direct reduction plant) – EAF (electric arc furnace) process, which lowers CO2 emissions. This study quantitatively evaluates the impact of increased hydrogen consumption on the carbon footprint of product (CFP) through an analysis of direct reduction process heat and mass balances. The study prioritises a comprehensive material balance based on mass conservation principles. The heat balance is calculated using differences in enthalpy through state energy properties, avoiding heat consumption. Validation using operational data from Hyundai Steel Dangjin works’ blast furnaces shows close alignment between calculated results and actual data, with less than 1 per cent error. This methodology facilitates a detailed analysis of the direct reduction process, offering insights into its feasibility and efficiency. Analysis of the operational impact by increasing the hydrogen ratio demonstrates reduced CO2 emissions and increased heat requirements due to the endothermic nature of hydrogen reduction, in contrast to the exothermic CO reduction. Possible solutions include raising reducing gas temperature or enhancing flow rate. The study effectively utilises designed heat and mass balances to assess material quantities and thermal balance under different operational conditions. It lays the foundation for the initial direct reduction process design, aiding in deriving and optimising operational parameters. Additionally, it provides valuable insights into the challenges of increased hydrogen, contributing to the production of greener steel by addressing these issues.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a process by which coal is converted in situ to a combustible gas that can be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. The process has been used in commercial-size projects in the former Soviet Union for more than 40 years, while significant national research programs have been undertaken in the United States and Western Europe. The Chinchilla UCG project is located at a site southeast of Chinchilla in Queensland. The UCG operation commenced in December 1999. A controlled shutdown of the process was initiated in January 2002 and successfully completed in April 2003. The process is currently under conservation and ready for restoration of gas production for commercial use in the near future. Groundwater plays an important role in the gas formation process during UCG. Most of the process water required for chemical reactions is usually derived from the coal seam itself and from surrounding aquifers. If insufficient water is available for chemical reactions the UCG gas will contain reduced concentrations of combustible components, and conversely, excessive water influx into the process area would cool down the reactor and thus limit the energy available for gas production reactions. Because of the importance of groundwater in the gasification reactions, and the potential to contaminate groundwater if the process is not correctly controlled, it is essential to predict and to control the groundwater influx into underground gasifiers during and after underground gasification. Control of groundwater requires a thorough understanding of hydrogeological conditions in the vicinity of the gasifier in order to be able to predict inflow rates, and constant monitoring throughout the process of water production rates and groundwater pressure in the coal seam and adjacent aquifers. Hydrogeological testing and groundwater monitoring in the vicinity of the UCG operation commenced six months in advance of its initiation. Monitoring of groundwater pressures in the vicinity of the gasifier have also been undertaken using vibrating wire piezometers installed in the coal seam at varying distances from the gasifier. This paper presents the results of the hydrogeological testing and groundwater quality monitoring carried out at the site, which show that it is possible to operate a UCG process without uncontrolled impacts on groundwater.

A flow sheet has been developed to treat a high tonnage highly preg-robbing gold ore. The ore is low grade and fine grained with a high proportion of very fi ne free gold. The key components of the flow sheet include gravity, flotation, intensive cyanidation with direct electrowinning, and carbon-in-leach of the flotation concentrate. The circuit produces a low overall mass pull to concentrate allowing economic intensive treatment of large tonnage low-grade material. Efficient recovery of fine gravity gold using a Falcon concentrator in both the milling and flotation circuits, and subsequent intensive cyanidation in a Gekko InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) is critical to the process with over 70 per cent gold recovery expected in this circuit. Grind size control was also found to be important in controlling the activity of the preg-robbers in the carbon in leach circuit and also in the solid liquid separation performance. Tests at the large-scale demonstration plant have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of this flow sheet. A large low-grade deposit is currently under development with the aim of developing a 10 Mt/a treatment plant with the subsequent addition of equivalent sized process lines in multiples of 10 Mt/a. The economic development of this orebody is critically dependant on understanding and exploiting the properties of the ore. In particular it is critical to minimise the effect of preg-robbers by recovering free gold with Falcon concentrators and InLine Leach Reactors. Recovery of the remaining gold by flotation into a small mass yield allows this fraction of gold to be treated by CIL leaching utilising high carbon levels. It is critical is to ensure operation at the optimal grind size to maximise liberation of the free gold and minimise pregrobber activity. The ore has been identified as preg-robbing with low recoveries obtained if treated using conventional cyanidation and carbon absorption. The mineralogy consists of predominantly fi ne grained free gold with minor sulfides including pyrite and arsenopyrite. With conventional cyanide leaching in the absence of carbon, gold recovery is less than 50 per cent. Direct cyanide leaching of the ore in the presence of activated carbon results in an improved but still uneconomic gold recovery. The gravity recoverable gold (GRG - as defined by Andre La Plante) content of the ore has been measured to be 70 per cent to 85 per cent in various tests with liberation grind size of approximately 106 ¦m. This indicates gold is predominantly free and suitable for recovery by batch centrifugal concentrators into a low mass yield. This property of the ore presents the opportunity to maximise the recovery of gold by separating it from the majority of the preg-robbers prior to leaching. Due to the very fine gold particle sizes and the necessity to maximise recovery of this fine fraction Falcon concentrators were selected for the duty, with their proven high recoveries at very fine gold sizes. The gravity recovery in the milling circuit is designed to be in the range 55 to 65 per cent. This has been achieved in the existing pilot plant using a Falcon operating on ball mill discharge within the mill recirculating load. Intensive leaching in an InLine Leach Reactor is essential to recover the gold from the gravity concentrates. Tabling is not a preferred option since recovery is lower than intensive cyanidation and any gold losses to table tails will report to CIL where recovery is reduced by the presence of preg-robbers. Furthermore, tabling recovery from the gravity concentrates is particularly poor due to the fine particle size of the free gold. ILR recoveries of 98 per cent were demonstrated in the pilot plant using an ILR100BA and leach conditions were investigated in the lab using pilot plant generated Falcon concentrate. Recovery of gold from the pregnant solution was achieved with direct electrowinning at pilot and efficiency and sizing parameters were determined at lab scale. To further increase free gold recovery Falcon concentrators will be installed in the flotation circuit. Location of the Falcons in the circuit is not finalised but installation on the rougher concentrate stream is favoured since it will allow multiple pass recovery. This is expected to recovery a further ten to 20 per cent of the gold, as indicated by lab tests on pilot plant generated material. The gravity concentrate from the flotation circuit will also be leached using InLine Leach Reactors. Initial intensive cyanidation tests carried out on lab generated flotation concentrates indicated higher recoveries than CIL can be obtained even though the concentrates contain significant levels of preg-robbing material. This can be explained by the high cyanide, high pH leaching conditions used in the ILR which alters the absorption equilibrium of the preg-robbers. Further optimisation of the leach conditions will be undertaken once more concentrate becomes available. Recovery of the remaining gold content is achieved by flotation into a small mass yield, however the preg-robbers are also recovered into this concentrate. Due to the presence of the preg-robbers gold leaching must be carried out in the presence of high levels of activated carbon in a CIL system. The recovery has been shown to be strongly dependant on the carbon loading and the concentrate particle size. The carbon competes against the preg-robbers for dissolved gold while excessive grinding increases the surface area and activity of the preg-robbers. This has been demonstrated in test work however the economic optimum leaching conditions and carbon loading have yet to be determined. The grind size is critical to the economics of the project, not only due to its effect on gold recovery but also due to its effect on the major operating and capital costs at both the front and back end of the process. It is critical to grind enough to obtain both gravity free gold and flotation liberation at low mass yields however over-grinding results in large increases in mill size and power at the front end and filtration or thickening costs at the tails. Because these unit operations treat essentially all the plant feed even small changes can result in major impacts on project economics. The viability of this project is greatly enhanced by the high recovery of gold into a small mass yield. In particular the production and intensive leaching of the free gold gravity concentrates will allow over 70 per cent of the gold to be recovered efficiently with minimal impact from preg-robbers. By using flotation the mass of the remaining fine preg-robber contaminated material, to be leached in CIL, is greatly reduced allowing this difficult material to be economically treated. Poorly judged or under-appreciated change plays a role in many major accidents. In particular, operational changes related to continuous improvement, maintenance and introduction of new technology can lead to unintended safety (and other) consequences. This paper provides an overview of the role of management of change in preventing unwanted impacts on safety, community relationships and the environment. It draws on a range of incidents covering mining, minerals processing, refining and smelting where inadequately assessed or ineffectively implemented change led to significant safety, environmental or community consequences. The paper will also highlight cases of well-managed complex change and the underlying model of decision-making in place to make those decisions. All these examples are drawn from Atturra’s experience in response to accidents or working with sites to improve their management systems. The paper will report on the challenges of applying conventional risk assessment approaches to complex or technically significant change. These typically result in either onerous and lengthy change procedures that are prone to workarounds or poor implementation. Conversely, ‘light touch’ or efficiency driven change processes present the risk of intended consequences by failing to bring appropriate expertise to bear in decision-making. Such balances can be resolved by considering the designation of ‘technical authority’ with appropriate expertise to consider the change and deconflict any production, cost or schedule trade-offs. Finally, the paper will reflect on the key components of management of change systems in the context of major accidents, highlighting good practice in how they are implemented. This will consider the integration of existing corporate processes, risk management and organisational structures into management of change systems, not just the content of change forms and procedures.

Over the past five years in coalmine slope evaluation the application of 3D modelling has increased significantly as software has become more user friendly but also areas requiring evaluation have become increasingly complex. Often simplistic 2D Limit Equilibrium modelling and analysis has been poorly used to solve slope stability issues by back analysis and subsequent forward predictive analysis. A plane strain condition with slope movement perpendicular to the slope strike is assumed where in reality the problem is more complex. This often leads to a misinterpretation of the failure mechanism because the failure mechanism being modelled in 2D does not generally represent the actual failure mechanism observed in the pit, with 2D modelling often oversimplifying a slope. This paper presents a case study where the initial slope assessment and remedial design evaluation was undertaken as a 2D Limit Equilibrium model which led to an overly conservative and costly remedial solution being implemented. Subsequent modelling of the slope using both 3D Limit Equilibrium and Finite Element methods were able to provide a better understanding of the structural complexities associated and correlate well with slope monitoring data to create a more realistic outcome.

The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.

hortly after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, the words ‘social distancing’ entered the global lexicon. The effects on the public of social distancing, lockdowns and travel bans are well documented. They also present unique challenges to the mining industry. For Hexagon’s Mining division, this posed a significant challenge. We have built our business – our reputation – on regional, customer-focused service and support. True to Hexagon’s values of being professional, engaged and customer-focused, we innovated to overcome the distance dilemma. Making automation a reality for our customers by implementing and supporting technology projects from a distance has helped deepen partnerships by making it easier to tap into our global experts’ knowledge. For example: • Body cameras were at the heart of a successful safety installation at a mine in Ghana. Despite the pandemic lockdown preventing travel by our South Africa staff into Ghana, the project was completed with minimal delays. • Traditionally, implementation and training for our Blast Movement Technology solution is done physically at the mine site. With COVID-19 travel restrictions in place, we have developed and successfully employed a remote deployment methodology. • Using RealWearTM headsets in the field and utilising the knowledge management platform from HINDSITE, Hexagon workshop technicians have been able to support hardware repairs in local offices, which once would have been undertaken in our overseas offices. • The same headset is being utilised to provide clients with remote mentoring sessions by our skilled team members who are based in our regional locations and unable to travel to their site without extensive quarantine commitments. • In instances where our team members have had to travel to site, we have provided consumer technology such as VR headsets to help them cope with long periods of quarantine to and from site. Post-pandemic, Hexagon will continue to refine and improve this method of working. INTRODUCTION Shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 (COVID) a pandemic, the words ‘social distancing’ entered the global lexicon. As governments, healthcare organisations and the public scrambled to respond to the crisis, one thing became abundantly clear: isolation was and, for most of us, still is the key to maintaining our health. Hexagon, a leader in sensor, software and autonomous solutions, was well positioned to pivot and assist in the global response to the crisis. From simulations of the effects of social distancing to mapping the spread of COVID in real time, to drone technology delivering COVID tests, to providing communities with transparent geospatial information, Hexagon solutions continue to help ensure that innovation is readily available to those who need it most during uncertain times. OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is one of Australia’s newest ‘greenfield’ mining deposits. It will be a 4.25 Mtpa sub level cave underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years. The integration of stakeholder values to inform project development influenced the social and environmental outcomes. A Native Title Mining agreement was developed in 12 months. Project primary approval was obtained 12 months from submission, with achievable licence conditions and one public comment. The project moved from a Pre-feasibility Study in 2016 to construction in 2018. Following recent international dam failures, the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was a focus for Government approvals and stakeholder engagement. Significant effort was made into understanding the science around potential effects, impacts and risks. A leading practice Impact Assessment Framework that identified Sources, Pathways and Receptors was applied. A process of failure mode identification and layers of protection analysis was undertaken for robust design controls at each stage, while simultaneously transitioning between downstream and upstream discharge arrangements. Participatory selection of the TSF site and design layout was critical in managing project costs and environmental constraints, and in incorporating cultural heritage constraints and technical risks.

Discrete vein modelling presents an innovative geology driven 3D modelling method for quantification of vein hosted mineral deposits, with far reaching potential for critical mineral supply and low impact resource extraction. By integrating key geological drivers with advanced discrete fracture network modelling, the DMX protocol (launched in 2019) converges to a more realistic representation of complex vein systems in three-dimensional space. The approach insights greater geologic reasoning in distributing mineral grades where vein boundaries are already defined. This presents a viable alternative to existing modelling and estimation methods and has important implications for mineral resource estimation and reporting. Further implications are discussed, where the enhanced understanding of complex orebody characteristics can potentially be used in optimising mining and mineral processing, supporting more sustainable and efficient mining practices.

Based on the 2021 Volume 5 State of PlayTM mining survey of key executives and board members in the mining sector, the key responses to ‘Which of the following technologies will have the biggest impact on mining in the next 15 years?’, were ‘Sensing and Data’ followed by ‘AI and Analytics’. From the early 1970s it would have been unlikely to predict the level of sensing and automation introduced to the broad industrial sector. No better example is the automobile industry where the combination of technological advances and external drivers (such as emissions control) have driven an incredible rate of change. The introduction of sensing, data, AI, and automation in the mining industry is just ramping up. Until now our energy efficiency, environmental footprint, labour shortage, skills, and safety have not been challenged by stakeholders in the way we are seeing market forces develop today. In order to address these challenges, we need to look back to the automobile industry and learn their lessons to accelerate our application of digital capability, analysis, AI and automation This is critical, particularly as access to skilled human resources becomes more difficult. An example of how this can be achieved in a gold processing plant utilising the latest real-time sensing technologies is the ‘Carbon Scout’ developed by Curtin University, and OLGA developed by CSIRO, which are both online technologies, coupled together with Gekko’s ‘Neon’ digital platform to achieve a fully automated real-time gold processing system.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s (AGAA) Tropicana gold mine (TGM) geology department seized the rare opportunity of building a new geology department for a new operation: the philosophy, the people and the processes. Not satisfied with the status quo, or simply repeating what was familiar and already known, the vision was for an innovative, agile, multidiscipline, high performance team, capable of delivering on expectations.To achieve this, the geology department has operationalised key components of human resource management (HRM).This paper describes the operational design and implementation of key HRM components: job analysis, organisational design and organisational development. The benefits of this approach are presented in terms of engagement and autonomy in roles, opportunity for role variety and flexibility of the organisational structure. The result is a geology department that provides the functions of mine geology, resource development, regional exploration, survey, data management, geographic information systems (GIS), resource modelling, scheduling, sample preparation, resource coordination and hydrogeology, and even geotechnical engineering for a year!Considerations for application in other geology departments are presented in terms of fundamental requirements and lessons learnt. Fundamental requirements for success have been the sustained support of the general manager, valuing the scrutiny that comes with continuous improvement, high quality HRM systems and tools within the organisation, and a committed leadership group within the department. One of the most important lessons learnt is that a robust process of ‘induction to role’ is critical – the process of familiarising new starters with who we are and the way we work.CITATION:Catto, B and McLeod, T, 2017. The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

This paper discusses the implementation of an underground rail haulage system during a major expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in 1998. The factors affecting the selection of rail haulage are discussed and details are provided on the rail system, which is designed to transport more than 10.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The reliability of the system during commissioning is discussed, including the decision to manufacture a ædummyÆ locomotive in order to keep the system operational. Finally, reliability improvements made both during and after commissioning are discussed with comments provided on the effectiveness of the system as it operates today.

In 1985 a 2.5-tonne top blown rotary converter was installed in the silver refinery at Cominco's Trail Operation to carry out the final cupellation of burndown metal to Dore metal. The furnace is fired with an oxygen-natural gas lance which is capable of achieving a variety of furnace conditions, varying from reducing to highly oxidizing. Reaction rates are about 4 times greater than using conventional cupel furnaces. The faster reaction rates improve productivity and reduce in-process precious metal tie-up. The furnace is also used to reduce litharge slag for bismuth recovery.
