This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Liquefaction potential is also considered. A limit equilibrium solution is used to obtain factors of safety against failure of the fill during mining of adjacent stopcs

Nowadays, one of the main problems in current flotation plants and new projects is the significant decrease in feed grades and changes in the mineral composition, which has an important effect on the mineral liberation and associations. Additionally, flotation plants usually operate with feed throughput higher than the original design, which has a significant impact on the feed particle size. All these conditions affect metallurgical performance, and must be evaluated and addressed, by improving control strategies for banks optimisation. For this purpose, the flotation of valuable minerals along the circuits requires better understanding, considering the compromise between performance and selectivity in flotation circuits. This paper presents a characterisation of the different minerals recovered along industrial flotation circuits. Plant sampling campaigns, performed in a copper industrial concentrator in Chile, provided the data for the study. Two rougher flotation banks consisting of cells of 130 m3 and 300 m3 were analysed. All the samples from the industrial surveys were analysed by screening and mineralogy, and the mineral recovery along the circuits was evaluated per particle size class, liberation class, type of associations, and others. Additionally, operating data on froth depth profiles complemented the evaluation of the mineral composition of concentrate streams, along the circuit. The results allowed for identifying and quantifying the main factors that affect the copper recovery and concentrate grade along the flotation banks. It was found that minerals with liberation lower than 50 per cent have a significant impact on the recovery. On the other hand, the decrease in the Cu grade in concentrates along the flotation circuits is mainly due to the relative increase of middling minerals (less liberated), non-valuable floatable minerals, such as free pyrite, and gangue entrainment. The characterisation of the gangue entrainment flow rate along the flotation banks showed a strong relationship with froth depth, which becomes more critical towards the last cells of the banks.

During longwall mining, the ability to reliably estimate the height of longwall mining-induced fractures is critically important in order to effectively manage mining-induced water inflows and aquifer interference. The extent of mining-induced subsurface deformation, fracture, surface subsidence and aquifer interference is largely controlled by local lithological conditions, mining methods and mine layouts. Therefore for the purpose of quantifying mining impacts it is imperative to incorporate the local geology and mine plan parameters in a mine scale model. Two different numerical models based on 3D continuum (Finite Element Method) and 2D discrete (Discrete element method) domains, respectively, are developed to incorporate the mine site parameters of a study site in Australia. Both the models are calibrated and validated with measured mine data. The continuum numerical modelling method is used to investigate the change in permeability of the overburden strata due to underground extraction considering the full 3D nature of geology and mine layout. The discrete element modelling method is used to simulate the initiation and propagation of fractures, allowing the caving of overburden strata to be represented in a realistic manner, and the permeability enhancement of the strata overlying the goaf to be calculated from first principles. Permeability enhancement in the discrete element model is a direct function of the fractures induced in the deformation/caving process; fracture location, extent, aperture and connectedness. From the numerical modelling under the simulated condition for the mine studied here, it is predicted that the permeability of the caving zone from the goaf to five times the mining height increases by almost six orders of magnitude. In the fracture zone to approximately ten times the mining height, the change in permeability is predicted to be around two to three orders of magnitude. At the height of more than ten times the mining height the magnitude of permeability increased is predicted to be one to two orders of magnitude. In April 2003 plant upgrades in the æLow GradeÆ Cadia Hill circuit were undertaken in order to improve concentrate quality and metal recoveries from the flotation circuit. The major changes involved: circuit reconfiguration to allow all concentrates to be reground to less than 38 ¦m prior to final cleaning; increasing ball charge in the regrind mill to fully utilise all of the installed power; desliming of the cleaner scavenger concentrate to improve the circuit water balance; and the inclusion of a gravity concentrator in the regrind circuit to recover more free gold to bullion.Once the flotation circuit had stabilised under the new operating conditions concentrate launder modifications and increased froth crowding on the scavenger flotation cells permitted the introduction of stronger collectors without compromising concentrate quality or circuit stability.Twelve months on, the copper concentrate grade has increased by two per cent and metal recoveries increased by three per cent and seven per cent for copper and gold respectively. The project capital outlay of approximately $2.0 million has been repaid in less than three months. This paper will review the project from the design, construction and commissioning perspective as well as the subsequent debottlenecking exercise that was required to eventually yield the full benefits of this upgrade.

G-Cell is a new design modification of the Imhoflot pneumatic flotation technology, which utilises a self-inducing aerator inside a downcomer, where bubble-particle attachment takes place. The present study has investigated the suitability of the G-Cell technology for cleaning fine coal using a 0.8 m diameter prototype unit at a coal preparation plant operating in the Midwestern United States. A slip-stream obtained from the overflow of raw coal cyclones operating in the plant, containing nominally minus 150 micron size particles and having ash content in the range of 40 per cent to 50 per cent and sulfur content in the range of 1.30 per cent to 1.50 per cent, has been used as the feed for the G-Cell. The performance data produced from the G-Cell tests are found to be very close to the ideal performance curves produced from release analysis. A statistically designed experimental program has been conducted to investigate the parametric effects on various key process responses, such as combustible recovery, product ash and sulfur rejection. The empirical models developed in this study have been utilised to identify a suitable experimental region for achieving a desired combination of response targets.

The high intensity zone within the Jameson Cell is the downcomer. It is largely external and separated from the flotation tank. This, together with operation of the downcomer under vacuum, rather than at elevated pressure and the absence of moving parts, allows ready access to the high intensity zone for measurement and analysis. Experimentation was conducted allowing measurements of recovery for residence times of between 20 milliseconds and ten seconds within the downcomer of a Jameson Cell. The affect of aeration rate on the recovery of different particle sizes was also studied.

Miners and mineral explorers are concerned at the increasingly hostile environment being generated towards their industry and their profession. There is little official or public recognition that the mining industry is essential for the maintenance of the country's standard of living; a large part of this hostile feeling is caused by the assumption that mining destroys large tracts of our attractive countryside. This paper presents a historic review of the impact on the countryside of the major land using groups commencing with the Polynesian migration. European farming practices, subsequent expansion of the urban dweller and the land management practices of the two Government Departments, Lands and Survey and New Zealand Forest Service who between them control half of the total land area, are discussed. Estimates of total land area to date, directly and indirectly affected by mining have been calculated and a broad estimate of 18 000 ha or 1/1500 of total land area is indicated; current annual mineral production requires some 240 ha. These gross areas take no account of subsequent land rehabilitation, its improvement upon the original in some cases and the recreational, historic and aesthetic areas gained. Comparisons are then drawn with some current land practices in New Zealand.

The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

In addition, the outcome of negotiations with overseas customers is often uncertain for long periods, or even unfavourable. The industries and companies represented at this Conference are in an arena of high competition, risk taking and enormous capital outlay. They are industries which our overseas markets (rightly or wrongly) have criticised for industrial relations problems, unreliable production and uncertain deliveries. They are industries which have an urgent need to be cost effective and competitive at all levels of activity.A critical factor in the mining and metallurgy industries is, therefore, its human resources and its human resource management. It requires the full use of available talent, innovation, skills and qualifications within its workforce, and the appropriate management of these resources.

"Evaluating the geological risk associated with ore deposits is becoming common practice in the mining industry. While geostatistical simulation is a useful tool for evaluating this risk, the effect of applying different types of simulation is less understood. For simulation of categorical variables like rock types, available methods perform simulation in fundamentally different ways. In this study, the geological risk relevant for informed mine planning is studied with two categorical simulation methods, PluriGaussian Simulation (PGS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Risk is expressed as a probability of repeated occurrence of lithological units in the same location across simulations. Significant differences are observed between the methods in terms of spatial distribution of risk. To identify the most plausible risk model, the input parameters at every step of both techniques are scrutinised. PGS and SIS inputs are classified as four parameters that are: fundamental to implementation of the methodfixed to enable comparison of PGS and SISdetermined by user interpretation, hence variablenormally optimised during application of PGS and SIS. The effect of parameter selection from categories 1 and 4 on the risk model is investigated using drill core data from a leucogranite deposit. A corresponding block model is created for assigning outputs from PGS and SIS. Risk models produced by either method are illustrated in a cut-out from the block model to enable bench-by-bench comparison. For PGS, risk associated with relatively rare lithologies is relatively sensitive to variation of parameters. Independent of the abundance of lithology, a location-dependent effect of variogram and vertical proportion curve parameter selection is observed, with risk increasing towards the deposit edge. Although SIS requires fewer inputs, single lithologies must be modelled in turn. Using small numbers of samples in the search neighbourhood, all risk models differ substantially. For larger numbers of samples, the risk models are similar. Overall it appears that the risk model produced using SIS is less sensitive to changes than PGS but further work is required to confirm this.CITATION:Palmer, L W and Glass, H J, 2014. The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western lasiuania use, uuiusatise solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. The initial paste fill design was based on the Bad Grund and Ranunelsberg Mines paste fill systems of Preussag in Germany and comprised pumping filtered tailings paste some 1.2 kin uphill from the mill to the mine portal, where cement was to be added before being distributed underground. The system was designed following initial testwork that was undertaken on a bulk sample of ore mined from the scar surface Sill Zone. Subsequently, during the mining of the Zone 96 orehody, it was found that there were significant mineralogical variations in the composition of the ore mined. Following processing, the resultant Icach residue caused significant changes in the paste rheology and therefore the pump and flow characteristics. An alternative solution was implemented that involved the use of agitator trucks to transport the cemented paste to the portal. This required modifications to the fill preparation system and also the underground distribution system. Laboratory strength tests of the HDPF using actual gold plant leach residue showed low early strengths were attained with HDPF containing only filtered leach residue. Therefore, high binder addition rates or an increase in the fill cycle time would be required to allow the fill to gain sufficient strength. A considerable amount of potentially acid generating waste rock also requires underground disposal. By blending the waste rock with the HDPF, the strengths were improved and the required cement addition rate reduced by about one-half. The potentially acid funning waste rock is encapsulated in the highly alkaline cemented paste, minimising the potential for acid generation.

Our modern cities are almost incapable of sustaining themselves without subsurface infrastructure, which is not identifiable at first glance. This very soon becomes evident when the chaotic conditions prevailing in some cases in the multi-million cities on the African, Asian and South American continents are taken into consideration. This does not simply apply to the hopelessly congested streets in the downtown areas. If anything, it is shown here too that a subsurface infrastructure represents an important prerequisite for public health right up to banishing the danger of disease. Even during the 1990s, this has been clearly underlined through examples of cholera and plague epidemics in parts of Central and South America as well as on the Indian subcontinent. The overriding significance of an inner urban subsurface infrastructure in order to create decent conditions in the major built-up areas was once again emphasised not all that long ago at the United Nations HABITAT-II Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996. More than 15 000 delegates from all over the world mulled over and discussed the prerequisites for humane living conditions in human settlements taking the varying climatic, topographical and cultural marginal conditions in different regions of the globe into account. Apart from the built-up areas themselves, the utilisation of underground space is experiencing high and ever increasing significance in less densely populated regions. Attractive and fast transport links between industrial centres call for high- performance transport arteries for the economic, speedy and unhampered carriage of people and goods. Important impulses for the economic power of a region or nation are provided by transport development and links. As a consequence, tunnels for roads and railways are being built or planned to a great degree for crossing mountain ranges, rivers and straits.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

An economic block cave is dependent to the characteristics of the rock mass at stages of caving. These are cave initiation, propagation and ore flow. In this research, the rock engineering system (RES), first established by Hudson (1992) to solve complex rock engineering problems, is introduced and verified against the well-established caving parameters established by Laubscher. There are two types of factors influencing caving and these are natural (cannot be controlled) and induced (operator controlled). A RES based interaction matrix is developed by determining the rating parameters required to reproduce the caving database using Laubscher’s caving parameters. This provides the relative importance of the parameters in the interaction matrix. After discussing the rock mass caving process and identifying all the effective parameters, an interaction matrix is introduced to study the cave initiation of rock masses. The expert-semi-quantitative (ESQ) coding method is utilised to assign the numerical value to each parameter’s interaction. Thereafter, the interaction intensity and dominance of each factor in the system is determined to classify these factors. Finally, all the parameters affecting caving operation and their weights on the RES system are identified. This new application of RES in block caving is very efficient and useful for any stage of caving studies and helps experts to make decisions more accurately.CITATION:Mohammad Khani, M, 2016. A better understanding of ore fragmentation and the textural features of ore is a key to the energy efficient extraction of targeted minerals from low-grade ore deposits. In this study, X-ray microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) is employed to study mineral liberation during the tensile failure and onset of fragmentation of a copper ore. Our results show that X-ray micro-CT could inform new studies of ore micromechanics and fragmentation at the laboratory scale and may offer new avenues to address current challenges in the design of efficient comminution processes. We present the results of experiments based on a high-pressure apparatus enabling micromechanical studies to be carried out in situ (inside a micro-CT scanner). This platform produces high-quality 3D images of the evolution of a sample of porphyry copper ore during an in situ fragmentation test. A sequence of tomographic images enables mapping in 3D of both the deformation of mineral phases and the fragmentation process. The fragmentation occurs quasistatically through multiple stages starting with an initial tensile fracture splitting the ore diametrically, followed by tensile-activated nucleation and growth of multiple fractures producing a complex fracture network. Coupling breakage with microstructural information enables quantitative determination of the impact of ore texture heterogeneity on fracture patterns and mineral liberation. This microstructural information can be compared to key measurements of the ore mechanical behaviour such as the global deformation energy, strain deformation field and the stress relaxation response. The latter allows one to identify interesting precursor signals of the tensile failure. The copper liberation, fragment size distribution and breakage patterns are statistically characterised and related to comminution mechanisms which are clearly identified in the sequence of tomographic images. The two dominant mechanisms are rock-rock friction/compression induced by fracture closing and compression-driven fragmentation at rock-crusher contact points.

The optimal production of the metals needed by society is best achieved by a close synergy between concentrate production and smelting. For over 75 years commencing in 1923, such a close relationship was enjoyed between the Sullivan Mine in Kimberley, British Columbia and the Trail zinc-lead complex. An effective program of continual change and improvement at the Sullivan concentrator was achieved through a strong entrepreneurial spirit. This spirit was in part maintained through a favourable location in south-eastern British Columbia that resulted in a dynamic local community that has survived the closure of the mine. Innovations to be reviewed include feed forward reagent control, the use of column flotation to zinc and lead cleaning and the application of ultrafine grinding coupled with concentrate dewatering using hyperbaric filter technology.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada's eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

Cretaceous volcanic activity (Hauterivian Albian) in the Peruvian Andes can be found along the coast of Peru and the western edge of the Andes mountains between 15o30'S and 5o30'S, extending discontinuously in south to Chile and north to Ecuador and Colombia. This volcanic activity formed in three aborted marginal basins; the NNW-trending volcanic Ca±ete and Huarmey, and NNE-trending Lancones basins. These volcanic rocks are predominantly andesitic and basaltic in composition, of calc-alkaline and tholeiite affinity with subordinate dacitic and rhyolitic rocks. One notable feature is the appearance of æocoitasÆ from Ica (14oS) south to Santiago de Chile. These rocks have a calc-alkaline to alkaline affinity. From south to north, the continental crust gradually becomes thinner, allowing mantle material to rise towards the surface. Ophiolitic sequences of this type form a marginal basin in Colombia. Very low-grade regional metamorphism which affects the volcanic rocks also varies gradually from south to north. Between Santiago de Chile and Ica this takes the form of burial metamorphism, with moderate geothermal gradients (20o-30oC/km). Metamorphism in the Huarmey basin is transitional between burial and ocean-floor metamorphism, with very high geothermal gradients (>3000C/km). High geothermal gradients are also apparent in metamorphism of the Lancones basin, though less than the other basins. Ocean-floor metamorphism is present in the ophiolitic sequence in Colombia. Associated mineral deposits in the Huarmey and Lancones basins, and in the north, are of the volcanic massive sulphide-type (VMS). The principal deposits in Peru are Leonila Graciela (20 Mt Zn and Pb) and Tambogrande (40 Mt Cu and Zn). There are also smaller mines and prospects. To the south of Lima, manto-type Cu deposits (CuMT) are found with a mineralogy of chalcopyrites, pyrites, magnetite, actinolite and apatite. The main example is Raul Condestable (10 Mt Cu). Other prospects are present to the south and Chile has some very large mines of this type (El Soldado, Lo Aguirre). The notable differences between the CuMT and the VSM deposits are thought to be the result of the prevailing conditions in the earthÆs crust during the Hauterivian Albian. To the south, calc-alkaline and alkaline volcanic activity in aborted marginal basins, with thicker crust, was thick, produced moderate geothermal gradients associated with burial-type regional metamorphism and deposits of CuMT. In the north aborted marginal basins associated with calc-alkaline to tholeiitic volcanic activity and a gradually thinning crust, produced transitional regional metamorphism between burial-type and ocean-floor type, associated with high to very high geothermal gradients and VMS deposits. In Colombia these conditions led to ophiolite extrusive rocks, ocean-floor metamorphism and also VMS deposits.

Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.
