For over 50 years R W Miller & Co Pty Ltd operated old coal properties abandoned by former owners as uneconomic, some of which dated back to the last century. The companyÆs ability to survive with what were relatively poor quality coal resources required a small efficient management organisation. In 1970 R W Miller was involved in negotiations with other coal companies through coal sales contracts to develop private coal areas under the provisions of the old Coal Mining Act (1906) and these efforts led to the development of Lemington colliery. At the same time development of the Ironbark colliery holding near Newcastle commenced. In 1971, R W Miller approached the New South Wales Government for a resource replacement area to prospect for coal in the Upper Hunter Valley. Authorisation No 33 was finally granted on 30 September 1975, but the company found the area was inaccessible as most of the surface was owned by the Australian Army. Later R W Miller was granted Authorisation 66 of 2167.5 hectares at Mount Thorley near Singleton on 1 November 1976. The development of this coal mining project coincided with the second OPEC oil crisis in 1978 and a short-term boom for coal resources and the unrealistic expectations generated by the boom. This paper gives a broad outline of the development of the Mount Thorley project between 1976 to 1986 including the feasibility study and the many governmental and industrial delays that resulted in a three-year time overrun in the project development period.

WMC has mined the Perseverance disseminated orebody exclusively by SLC (sublevel cave) methods. Deteriorating ground conditions in the vicinity of an orebody inflection forced a re-evaluation of future mining at Perseverance and a strategy to drop down below the inflection zone and recommence the cave was implemented. This strategy has led to increased production at higher grades, resulting in lower costs and better mill recoveries. This paper describes the evolution of mine planning, development, support and production strategies through the successful process of implementing the ædrop-downÆ and re-establishing the SLC.

The knowledge in the field has been reviewed by literature studies, and using experience from personal research in sublevel caving. There is a lot of material regarding gravity flow of fine grained materials in bins, but the theory of flow for these materials are normally not applicable for coarse blasted rock. This study was therefore concentrated towards coarse rock fragments created after blasting in orebodies. The goal for this study was to make a report of known knowledge, and identify what we have to learn more about. The Bergmark-Roos theory, which was a paradigm shift in the science of gravity flow, is today the best mathematical theory for calculation of the drawbody for a homogenous material or when we wish to simulate the mean drawbody for a large number of draws. The Bergmark-Roos theory must however be improved, so it can take into account the flow pipe effect. When this is done it will be possible to construct a 3D computer model for calculation of ore extraction versus amount of loaded ore and waste. It is also necessary to find the 3D shape of the flow cone to be able to calculate the 3D ore rest that normally develops on footwalls. Calculations should be done for the draw on several sublevels including determination of the ore losses and temporary ore rests. First when this computer model is developed optimisation of ore recovery and waste rock dilution can start for a given orebody. The author points out the importance for international co-operation and standardisation of methods for determination of material properties. More field tests and model blasting tests should also be done. When enough knowledge is gathered, a handbook of the optimisation of sublevel and block caving should be written.

Sticking and breakage of iron ore pellets during high temperature reduction can result in several operational challenges during shaft furnace ironmaking. With the shift to H2-based DRI processes and decreasing iron ore quality, this issue becomes more prominent. It is therefore important to understand how the iron ore chemistry and mineralogy affects the sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. This study provides a review of the mechanisms that lead to sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. The sticking index of pellets is related to the rate of metallic iron production as well as the precipitation morphology of product iron. Sticking of pellets is also enhanced by the formation of low-melting slag phases. The breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace is often associated with the mechanical load of burden and pellet swelling, which is caused due to iron whisker or protruded iron formation. This paper investigates how the composition of iron ore, particularly the presence of different impurity oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and alkali oxides in the pellets, influences the sticking and swelling indices. The effect of ore mineralogy on these adverse behaviours is also discussed.

Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. Measurement of the net percolation from the base of a cover system into the underlying waste material is a key component of a cover system monitoring program. The units of measure (ie a percentage of precipitation or rainfall) are simple to understand for all stakeholders, which increases the importance of obtaining representative net percolation values. In general, lysimeters are used to measure net percolation across the cover material-waste material interface; however, the design of lysimeters for cover system monitoring programs in the mining industry have typically not considered fundamental aspects of lysimeter design. Lysimeter design is typically thought of as being conceptually simple, when in reality the design, installation, and operation of lysimeters is often counter-intuitive, due to the complexities of flow through unsaturated soil systems. This paper puts forward a methodology for lysimeter design while also presenting the fundamental design variables that should be considered. Lysimeter design for differing climates, cover materials, and waste materials is discussed. Finally, the performance of lysimeter designs previously installed in the field at sites in Australia, Canada, and the United States are subjected to numerical modelling to determine whether net percolation is being measured properly.

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

A large number of countries in the world now have some regulation for labelling the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food. For the last ten years, ISO/TC 34/SC 16 has been providing methods, guidelines and requirements concerning the evaluation of molecular biomarkers including GMOs. This activity makes sure that stakeholders on all sides of commercial transactions are satisfied and their marketing or regulatory needs are met. Developing and maintaining a transparent, science-based environment for users of horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis is a high priority. Sampling and analysis of molecular biomarkers has become critically important for food and agricultural organisations developing, producing, distributing and selling genetically engineered, non-genetically engineered, identity preserved and/or organic crops and their derived products and preventing their respective destructive diseases. To aid in international harmonisation, a new work item proposal to develop an ISO type A management system standard (MSS) for organisations including laboratories using molecular biomarker analysis and sampling has been submitted to ISO/TC 34/SC 16. The purpose of this MSS is ensuring that determination of the presence, absence or quantification of a particular biomarker with a relationship to a product quality determinant, a marketing claim, a regulation or a plant pathogen is carried out under a suitable quality assurance / quality control system. This MSS will provide an overarching system to apply and manage molecular biomarker analysis and sampling for any organisation large, medium or small in a private, government or academic setting.CITATION:Sussman, M D, 2017. Knowing that I was required to make four appearances, and not wanting to be too repetitious, I wrote a rather long speech of which I will deliver various sections at different places, with a common introduction. Specific areas I have addressed are "Exploration", "New sources of minerals and energy", and "Mining and metallurgy of the future".

One of the fundamental parameters of the race- way is its extent (a{ o), which has a significant effect on the distribution of gas and material flows in the lower region of the furnace. pp The known relationships for determination of aC o in most cases link the length of the raceway with the parameters of the blast, while the para- meters of the coke layer, in which the raceway is formed, are either ignored or else expressed in terms which are difficult to determine experimen- tally. Furthermore, the coke combustion propert- ies are not always taken into account in current blast furnace operating practice with combined blast. A complex dimensionless parameter, which re- flects the properties of the interacting media, is the ratio of the kinetic energy of the hot, com- bined gas stream to the potential energy of the coke flow, burning at the tuyere in a gas of known composition. Good mining is central to any approach to value tracking. Good mining occurs where the ore is correctly delineated, measured and fed to the mill. This process is usually referred to as grade control, ore control or quality control. There are now ways to measure the efficiency of this process, such as by using conditional simulation, and a brief synopsis is presented. Resource estimation is the foundation of ore reserve estimation, which should enable useful prediction of the expected metal to be recovered from mining and milling. Significant improvements have resulted from applying new techniques such as the Chain of Mining (CoM) method, which models the mining process. Again, a brief synopsis is presented. Tracking value from the mine through the mill implies a linear sequence of processes that can be modelled. Reality is more complex and there are error components, feedback loops and breaks in the Chain of Value. Modelling the total production process in a number of operations is considered, including the various impacts on producing reconciliations. Procedures are also discussed for handling a number of difficult issues such as: different data supports, stockpiling strategies, blending from multiple ore sources, blast movement and underground ore extraction.

In recent years, the value to Australia of the introduction of a system of resource rent taxation on the mining industry has been frequently debated. The forms that this rate of return based tax could take, and the impli- cations on government revenue and mining com- pany profitability have been discussed at some length. Further, the selective application of this taxation scheme to certain mining industry sectors has received considerable attention. This study takes the form of a survey of the taxation history of one significant Australian mining venture, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. The conditions faced by this company during its history are used as a base for the imposition of rent taxation schemes. Comparisons are drawn between the historical taxation liability of the company and that which would have been incurred if a resource rent form of taxation had been in existence. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that while the company can be con- sidered to have been a successful enterprise during most of its history, it has not achieved a level of profitability which would warrant the collection of any form of excess profits Tax.

A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

The Mt. Sisa Orebody on Misima Island, P.N.G., consists of gold-silver mineralization associated with massive carbonate and amor- phous iron-manganese oxides in fractures and breccia matrix. The orebody forms the north- ern extension of the Umuna deposit. The mineralization lies within the three kilometre strike length of a northwest trending, 300 metre wide, high angle fault zone. The fault zone structure is deeply oxidi- sed, with the manganiferous oxide material resulting from oxidation of carbonate. The wallrocks are metamorphosed basement psammopelites and basic volcanic rocks, exten- sively intruded by microgranodiorite. These are dominantly epidotized and sericitized. The precious metals are associated with anomalous Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As, Ba, Ga, Sb, and. Mo. Many of the features of the Mt.Sisa mineralization are characteristic of volcanic- hosted epithermal deposits of western North' America. Lithologic and textural gradation is ob- served between the carbonate hydrothermal breccia-fill at Mt. Sisa, and the quartz domi- nated dilational fracture-fill mineralization which forms most of the Umuna deposit to the south. This gradational relationship is ana- logous to that within the Amethyst-OH vein system at Creede, Colorado, where it is shown to be indicative of deposition from laterally migrating fluids.

The measurement of error in assays collected as part of a mineral exploration program or mining operation, including errors introduced during sampling, sample preparation, or geochemical analysis, historically has been undertaken in a variety of ways. Different parameters have been used to describe the magnitude of relative error and each of these parameters is related to the standard measure of relative error, the coefficient of variation. Calculation of the coefficient of variation can be undertaken in a variety of ways; however, only one produces unbiased estimates of measurement error: the root mean square coefficient of variation calculated from the individual coefficients of variation. A series of physical tests have been conducted to determine the actual performance of bunton to shaft side wall connections typically used in new shaft construction in South Africa. The test set-up is described, together with the applied loading, which incorporates a cyclical load component and a quasi-static load component, in an attempt to simulate actual conditions in the shaft. The test results are given and it is shown that generally the performance is adequate, provided double-slotted holes are not used. Generally the fatigue performance is found to be good, with the only exception being cases where the bottom of the bunton is lower than the seating level for the bunton to side wall connection. Arising from the tests, typical design values of connection stiffness, strength and fatigue life are proposed and a design procedure including these three key aspects of connections is described.

For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That sub- ject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public atten- tion has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing com- modity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent f.11 1k

Blast furnace slags which fall into the quaternary system SiO2 - A1203 - MgO - CaO have latent hydraulic properties which depend on the degree of vitrification. When the oxides com- bine to form Calcium Silicate Hydrates and other products of hydration the bonds between elements are at a lower energy level than those which exist in the glassy state. Transition from the glassy state to the crystalline state is thermo- dynamically favoured and, in the context of this paper, such slags possess internal energy. Manufacture of Portland cement is respon- sible for about 3.6 per cent of total industrial energy consumption in Canada. Pyroprocessing accounts for about 83 per cent of this figure or 3 per cent of the total. The processing of blast furnace slag to a condition in which it can be used as a partial substitute for Portland cement requires no pyroprocessing and, on average, only about 11 per cent of the energy needed for Portland cement. In North America the benefits of slag as a cementitious materials have been obscured by other considerations, the most important being commercial strategy. This situation has under- gone radical change as a result of the rising cost of energy, and government pressures to conserve energy.

The development of regional resource synergies in intensive areas with concentrations of minerals processing industries provides a significant avenue towards sustainable resource processing. Gladstone (Queensland) and Kwinana (Western Australia) are two of AustraliaÆs major heavy industrial areas. There are a number of successful regional synergies in both areas. In addition to the existing regional synergies in both areas, more potential synergy opportunities appear to exist which, upon implementation, could benefit industry, the environment and the community. To further enhance the development of such potential regional synergies, the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (http://www.csrp.com.au) commissioned research projects to facilitate the identification of potential synergies and assist with their implementation in both regions. This paper presents a selection of specific examples from both regions to illustrate the sustainability benefits from regional synergy developments. Although the composition of industries in the Gladstone and Kwinana regions is different both in terms of geography and industry diversity, similarities in synergy developments for both regions are apparent. Consequently, the examples discussed in this paper are organised around the key themes of water, energy and inorganic by-products. Comparison on a theme basis highlights success factors of successful synergies and demonstrates the range of benefits resulting from their implementation.

The aims of this paper are to present the governing science, verify the performance and demonstrate the potential engineering applications of a computational simulator for in situ leach mining of non-ferrous minerals. Assuming that the target mineral is deposited either uniformly within rock matrixes (matrix-hosted) or on fracture walls (fracture-hosted), in situ leaching can be treated as reactive flow and transport in geological media (porous media for matrix-hosted ore deposits and fractured media for fracture-hosted ore deposits). Under this treatment, the processes of in situ leach mining for non-ferrous minerals can be quantified through several sets of equations and these coupled equations have been numerically solved. The computational simulator has been applied to the simulations of one-, two-, and three-dimensional in situ leaching cases. The computational simulator, together with laboratory and in situ leaching tests, can be used to:optimise the leaching chemistry; optimise the in situ scale mining operations; scale up the in situ scale test operation to a full-scale mining operation; and evaluate the post-mining environmental restoration plan.
