Underground mining of the ore below the West Lyell open cut commenced in 1972 with the 10 Series stopes above rail haulage level. The third lift of stoping (30 Series) com- menced this year, and access to the 40 Series stopes is being developed. The method uses transverse open stopes with subsequent mass blasting of the rib and crown pillars and consequently there is sub- sidence and caving of the old open cut area above.

Staurolite is one of the major contaminant minerals contained in the Tiwest Cooljarloo orebodies. Approximately 80 per cent of staurolite in mined ore, reports to the heavy mineral concentrate that is supplied to the Dry Mill. Staurolite in heavy mineral concentrate is typically five per cent by weight and has no significant effect in the Dry Mill other than to occupy equipment space, reporting as a tailing, that requires transportation and disposal back to the mine site. Staurolite is an aluminosilicate with a MohÆs hardness of 7.5. It is known to have potential as an abrasive blast agent and it is produced in substantial quantities in the USA for that purpose. Research indicated that there was potentially a market for staurolite within Australia, as a replacement for some of the lower grade abrasives as well as a material of choice. A small tonnage of staurolite product was manufactured through a simple circuit within the Dry Mill in December 1998. This was subjected to industrial scale tests by external companies specialising in sand blasting. The most significant batch of tests were conducted at the Tiwest Chandala site on plant and equipment undergoing corrosion repairs. Staurolite was tested against three other commercially available abrasives and compared very well with respect to surface profile, surface texture, coating adhesive strength and dust generation. As part of a due diligence study, free silica, radiation and heavy metals contents of spent abrasive and dust was investigated. This information was needed to seek approval from the appropriate Western Australian statutory authorities to sell staurolite as a product. Approval was received in November 1999. Tiwest has since installed a production circuit in the Dry Mill capable of producing 20 000 tpa of Staurolite.

The latter plant is unique in being the first installation for the successful use of these gases.

Most of the known in-place reserves of oil sands are found in Canada. These oil sands ores are mined using various processes to extract bitumen. The by-product slurry resulting from the extraction process, known as tailings, is discharged into tailings ponds. Fine kaolin clays are an important ingredient of the tailings because they remain suspended in water for many years. Current polymeric flocculation/dewatering technologies use acrylamide-based polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM), but sediments produced using PAM-based flocculants hold considerable amounts of water due to the formation of loosely-packed flocs. Anionic polymers are better flocculants due to bridging and the charge-neutralisation mechanism. In this paper, we will compare the synthesis of two flocculants: thermosensitive, anionic flocculants and thermosensitive, hydrophobically modified anionic flocculants. The first flocculant is a copolymer of acrylic acid (AA) and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), in which AA is the anionic monomer. The second flocculant is a copolymer of NIPAM, AA and the hydrophobic monomer N-tert-butyl acrylamide. We evaluated the dewatering efficiency of 2 wt per cent kaolin using both flocculants by comparing settling rates at different flocculant dosages, charge neutralisation ability and supernatant clarity. To better understand floc formation, we measured the floc size formed by both flocculants at different flocculant dosages. We propose that the hydrophobic monomer in the terpolymer flocculant helps expel water out of flocs, ultimately decreasing the water content in the sediments.CITATION:Gumfekar, S P, Vedoy, D R L, Botha, L and Soares, J B P, 2015. The KSS Lead Plant (Kivcet - SNAMPROGETTI - SAMIM) of Por tovesme, owned by Nuova Samim (the sector-head Company for non ferrous metals and derivatives owned by ENI), has been operating since february 1987. This plant is based on the Soviet Kivcet licence and testwork carried out on the pilot plant of VNIITSVETMET in Ust Kameno gorsk fed by the Nuova Samim's concentrates. The plant is com pletely automatized using the most advanced technologies and it is operated by nineteen people on shift work, including all ancillary units and lead decopperizing-casting. The expected performance of the plant has been confirmed and improves day by day in relation of the operating experience, thanks to the new conceptual design of the furnace. Due to the remarkable flexi bility of the process, the integration of the lead plant with the other plants of the metallurgical complex of Portovesme rro-#4 (Electrolytic Zinc Plant, Sulphuric Acid Plant, Imperial Smel ting) has shown all the economic advantages. The lead content in the ambient air, detected by the monitors, either in the working area and on the ground outside the complex, is widely Pb W" below the stricter new limits recommanded by the E.E.C. (Economic European Community) rules and by the Italian law. The whole process is carried out in equipment completely closed and under suction and it does not require manual operations with exposure to the lead. The production cost is much lower than that performed by the traditional technology. This advantage permits wide margin to consider investment to replace the traditional technology.

Concern has been expressed that Vezins can be biased when used for sampling fine materials if the cutter speed is as high as the 0.6 m/s which is often used. Using modelling techniques that consider airflow as well as particles, we have endeavoured to investigate sampling bias as a function of the size of fine particles, cutter aperture, cutter speed, shape of cutter blades, and the size of the gap between the inlet pipe and the cutter blades. Using crude estimates of the rate of airflow and a simple model of a single particle moving through air led to an approximate rule that bias will not occur due to mechanisms related to airflow for particles larger than about 200 microns; and bias will always occur for particles smaller than about 40 microns. In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. The effect of aluminium on nitrogen solubility was investigated by equilibrating melt comprising master alloy of Fe-Al with pure electrolytic iron in a controlled atmosphere (pure argon) at 1873 K. Nitrogen in the samples was measured by sampling technique using inert gas fusion absorptiometry. It was found that nitrogen content decreases steadily with aluminium concentration and gradually, becomes close to 1 ppm for very high aluminium steels. Wagner’s second order interaction parameter formalism has been used to estimate the equilibrium constant and interaction parameters. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation showed, dual-phase inclusions comprising AlN phase surrounding alumina core. The 3D morphology of inclusions was studied by extracting the sample from the top and the central bottom portion of the solidified ingot. A sparse distribution of nitrogen was found for most of the inclusions which manifested the presence of almost pure alumina inclusions with different morphologies and sizes.

Flotation is the one of the most used techniques for the mineral separation of non-ferrous ores worldwide. However, the increase of the complexness along with the decrease of ores liberation sizes ought to become important challenges for mineral processing, including flotation. It now appears necessary to better understand the fundamentals of the flotation process, particularly the adsorption of flotation reagents at the liquid/mineral interfaces, to propose further improvements. Flotation relies on different phenomena: surfactants adsorption, on one hand, and collision, adhesion, and transport of particles with bubbles, on the other hand. For acknowledging the reagents adsorption mechanisms, molecular modelling tools borrowed from chemical and material sciences, are increasingly used. Atomistic simulations were successfully applied to study the flotation reagents interaction with various mineral surfaces, eg of two common minerals from iron ores, kaolinite, and magnetite surfaces, or with fluorite surface, a tungsten ores common gangue mineral.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

"It has long been recognised that the barometer infl uences areas of underground coal mines that havebeen sealed off from the current, or active, mine workings but it appears litt le formal research hasbeen done on how the barometer aff ects the goafstream sample point. Based on statistical analysis of samples from a number of mines from Queensland and New South Wales it can be concluded that there is a direct correlation between the barometer and oxygen concentration at a goafstream sample point. To help mitigate some of the high consequence hazards within the underground coal industry and protect the health and safety of the persons within that environment, many monitoring tools are utilised. A control recognised in management plans prescribed under New South Wales and Queensland legislation is the need to conduct monitoring to identify the early warning signs of spontaneous combustion. One of the monitoring tools utilised involves a bagsample being collected from a goafstream sample point then returned to the surface for analysis.When the sample is incorrectly collected, the resultant analysis from a gas chromatograph provides litt le value to the persons charged with the obligation of operating the coal mine at an acceptable level of risk. This, therefore, increases the probability of spontaneous combustion leading to a loss of equipment, mine and in the worst case, life. When the sample is collected correctly, the analysis presents early warning signs of low level oxidation allowing corrective action to be taken, to prevent the oxidation accelerating to spontaneous combustion. The eff ect the barometer has on this sample point should be recognised and the knowledge imparted to persons who conduct sampling to remove a variable in the bag sample collection process. This will ensure the persons operating the mine have a bett er understanding of what is happening within their longwall goaf."

The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested. The phase equilibria in the Al2O3–TiOx system were investigated in wide ranges of temperature and oxygen partial pressure: 1300~1600°C and 10-16.6~10-8 atm, respectively. The equilibrium phases and their compositions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. Most noticeably, a wide range of pseudobrookite solid solution was found in equilibrium with almost pure alumina. At each temperature, the cationic ratio expressed as RTi = nTi/(nAl + nTi)) of the pseudobrookite solid solution showed a noteworthy dependency on the oxygen partial pressure. This resulted in the formation of a broad range of pseudobrookite solid solutions, ranging from Al2TiO5 (RTi = 1/3) to Ti3O5 (RTi = 1.0). Complete miscibility within the pseudobrookite solid solution was observed at 1600°C, with only a minor miscibility gap becoming evident below 1500°C. Based on the results obtained in the present study, the behaviours of Al2TiO5 pseudobrookite have implications in two key domains: (1) understanding changes in the physical properties of the materials, and (2) elucidating the evolution of Al–Ti complex oxide inclusions in liquid steel which can deteriorate the steel cleanliness.

The benefits of fine size separation in magnetite concentration are detailed focusing on published research from various iron ore producers. Basic principles of fine sizing and advancements in screening technology are addressed. A chronological review of research is used to show the evolution of fine sizing applications in the industry, starting with studies that demonstrated the benefit of using fine screens to produce consistent lower silica concentrates, followed by improvements in fine sizing equipment that have made effi cient screen classification in ball mill circuits practical. Case studies are used to demonstrate how positive sizing with screens can be used to significantly shift concentrate ‘grind/grade’ relationships.

This paper addresses the problem of prediction of grade variables over volumes (block estimation) for an autonomous mine. Resource estimation is usually concerned with the prediction of the quality of material over volumes (blocks in resource models). This problem is tackled by developing Bayesian block estimation with the Gaussian processes (GPs) framework. GPs are commonly used for nonparametric regression and classification and offer an elegant solution to deal with incomplete knowledge and information. A GP is defined by its mean and covariance function. The parameters of the covariance function can be learnt by maximising the marginal likelihood of the data. This offers a way of automating the covariance fitting process, while at the same time allowing for an assessment of how well the covariance function fits the data. Within the GP framework the calculation of the average grade over a volume can be performed using Bayesian quadrature, which treats an integral as a random variable. First, it is demonstrated that the block kriging equations in geostatistics are the same as Bayesian quadrature. Then, it is determined when closed form analytical solutions for the integrals are possible and quadrature approaches for approximations are briefly discussed.

Specific focus with be given to quantitative microanalysis techniques including electron probe microanalysis and laser ablation, covering general principles, capabilities and limitations and recent development to address specific challenges associated with analysing molten slag, matte, and alloys, highlighting the necessity of embracing the application of these and other innovative analytical methodologies.

For suitable production planning in an open pit mine, and also to carry out the optimisation process during the mining production cycle, prediction of fragment size distribution is required prior to carrying out the blasting operation. For this purpose, many prediction models, such as empirical models, were presented. The proficiency of these models differs in various conditions and mines. Therefore, in this paper the most important models, including SveDeFo, Kuz-Ram, CZM, Modified Kuz-Ram in 2005, Kuznestsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony (KCO) and also Gheibie et al, were examined by the information of 20 blasts in Gol-Gohar iron ore mine. Fourteen images were taken on average for each blast. For image processing analysis Split-Desktop software was used. After examination, it was understood that none of the available empirical fragmentation models had presented acceptable performance, except the Kuz-Ram model for magnetite ore, which had somewhat acceptable results. However, this model for blasting patterns in hematite presented unsuitable results. Examination and comparison of two important distribution functions, Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec, were carried out and it was observed that the performance of Swebrec for fines was far better than Rosin-Rammler. Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is a bonding phase in the iron ore sinter. The phase transition upon melting of SFCA was investigated with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The initial melting of SFCA occurred at 1183.2°C and a massive melting was found at around 1351.1–1358.2°C. A phase transition-melting was investigated at 1476.5–1478.7°C. The liquid phase was composed of immiscible phases. The present results would be utilised to design a new iron ore sinter for better processing performance in a hydrogenenriched ironmaking process.

The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity.
