Trials of different tapping operations at Olympic Dam have been carried out with the aim of improving the safety of tapping and improving the integrity and lifetime of the taphole. This has involved trialling the use of a mudgun and drill on one of the tapholes of the electric furnace in place of the normal manual tapping procedures. The blister copper tapholes are currently closed using a conical clay plug formed around a steel bar. The plug is pushed into the taphole by hand to stop the flow, and the cooling on the outer part of the taphole freezes the blister copper in the tapping channel. The hole is burnt open using consumable oxygen lances. This puts the furnace technicians in close proximity to molten metal and heat û which is reflected in the safety incidents reported by these operators. By moving to a mudgun and drill operation, the furnace technicians will be moved away from the taphole area improving their safety. Additional benefits include: improved tapping cycles; extended taphole refractory lifecycles; and improved furnace integrity around the taphole, hopefully extending the campaign. This paper outlines the trials that have shown that it is possible to plug and drill blister copper (not matte) tapholes using a mudgun and drill.

"OceanaGold’s Didipio operation has been in operation for three years. Integral to the flow sheet design is a flash flotation circuit treating a portion of cyclone underflow, consisting of an Outotec SK-500 flash rougher and an Outotec TC10 flash cleaner and a SB-2500 falcon treating flash rougher concentrate to recover fine free gold.Flash copper recovery has been holding steady at 60 per cent, while flash gold recovery at 50 per cent. Gold recovery from the gravity circuit is 22 per cent, bringing the overall flash plus gravity gold recovery to 72 per cent.Operation of the flash rougher is mainly by pulp level control. Control of copper grade in the flash cleaner is mainly controlled by air inflow and flash cleaner pulp level control drives copper recovery. AngloGold operates various gold mines in South Africa, the largest of which are situated in the North West province. The impact of AngloGold Vaal River mining operations on the environment and, specifically, on aquifers and groundwater is assessed. The location of such aquifers and plumes is determined by remote-sensing and ground-sensing operations, followed up with the correct placement of monitoring boreholes from which information such as water rest levels, chemistry and geological data is gathered. This study utilises an integrated approach consisting of the following mutually reinforcing phases: Phase 1: Airborne multi spectral scanning; Phase 2: Airborne thermal remote sensing; Phase 3: Ground resistivity survey; Phase 4: Borehole placement; and Phase 5: Sampling and monitoring. The integration of the investigation tools and phases in use at AngloGold Vaal River has been found to be very useful in determining the exact sources of contamination, the direction of flow of such contamination, the positioning of interceptive measures and the analysis of such contamination. This adopted approach will enable the development of flow transport models that will further enhance our knowledge of contaminants in aquifers at the mine and enable management to conduct educated interventions.

The mining industry is currently focusing to develop and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that can efficiently recover valuable minerals from their natural state. However, a limited number of research can be seen on the design and synthesis of polymeric flotation collectors. The focal objective of this research is to synthesise a more effective polymeric collector with advanced architecture to utilise in the mineral processing industry. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) co-polymers with cardanol derivatives have the potential to selectively trap valuable metals in the flotation process in a more efficient way. Cardanol exhibits amenability to chemical modification for making tailor-made monomers that can further produce polymers with high value. The synthesis of a series of fit for purpose copolymers in this study was accomplished by RAFT polymerisation. The ability to design complex architecture is a significant advantage in engineering polymeric collectors by RAFT polymerisation. Initially, commercially available cardanol was converted to a cardanol based monomer and copolymerised with commercially available monomers to synthesise a series of novel cardanol based copolymers with predetermined molecular weights. The side groups of the copolymer were chemically modified to incorporate functionality that can be selectively adsorbed on the chalcopyrite surface.

This paper provides a simple guiding framework for grinding circuit optimisation, focussing on common themes in past optimisation success stories, the conditions for success and techniques that can be employed to identify and define opportunities. Many significant grinding circuit improvements have been reported for operating plants, based on recurring themes such as the optimisation of mill feed size, mill liner design, process control, critical size, grinding media and classification. Project financing challenges caused by declining commodity prices have heightened the need to improve project metrics such as minimising capital payback and maximising net present value (NPV). Khnaiguiyah Mining Company (KMC) recognised the need to improve early cash flows at their Khnaiguiyah zinc-copper project after initial studies showed the project could not provide the desired financial outcomes necessary to compete for investment dollars in the current market.A significant improvement to the project cash flow in early years was realised through simultaneous optimisation of cut-off grade, mining sequence and strategic stockpiling. This improvement was achieved by accelerating mining in the pits, stockpiling lower value material and feeding higher value material directly to the plant. The schedule required higher mining and stockpile capacities than the sequential mine plan although minimal change occurred in the definition of ore and waste as measured by tonnes and grade. The mining industry has come through a period of major change in community expectations regarding safety and environmental impact and these changes can be expected to continue in the future. These changes are ultimately reflected in Government regulations and industry safety standards and form the basis of the ælicense to operateÆ. Equally, advances in technology have made possible new equipment and processes either available now, or close to completion, that will allow mines to meet these more stringent expectations if properly introduced. Changes in technology provide opportunities for mine management to introduce new systems that will remove people from hazardous areas and lead to improvements in the ætriple bottom lineÆ. In a longer time frame of five to ten years, novel and advanced technologies that are currently being developed will deliver new mining methods and conversion of presently uneconomic resources to ore. This is consistent with the time frame required to develop a new mine from discovery. Strategic decisions can be taken now by mine designers to enable the introduction of these major technology changes. Examples of both practical and strategic opportunities are drawn from the integration of rock cutting/blasting, automation, electronic communications and new mining methods. This paper discusses emerging industry trends, changes to legislative framework and some practical choices for existing and imminent technology.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.

China is the largest coal-producing country in the world, while the geological conditions of deep coal mining are extremely complicated with high ground stress, high gas pressure and low permeability, which results in the difficulty of gas drainage and aggravation of gas explosion and coal and gas outburst disasters. Co-extraction of coal and gas is an effective method to eliminate coalmine gas disasters and realise the safe exploitation of coal and efficient gas drainage at the same time. This concept is widely accepted by the main coal-producing countries around the world, while the concrete definition of co-extraction is vague and not unified, and there is little accurate theoretical support for co-extraction of coal and gas, which makes it hard to determine efficient gas drainage methods correspondingly according to the features of coal seams in a comprehensive and systematic way. Based on theoretical analysis, laboratory test and field observations, basic thoughts and specific definition of co-extraction of coal and gas were put forward after analysing the occurrence characteristics of coal seams in China. We obtained the mechanism of mining-enhanced permeability and established the corresponding theoretical model, which is the process of fracture network formation through opening recovery of the original fractures and new fractures produced by unloading damage. Based on the core idea of ‘mining-enhanced permeability’, engineering approaches of ‘unloading by boreholes drilling’ for the single coal seam and ‘unloading by protective seam mining’ for the coal seam group were proposed to realise safe and efficient co-extraction of coal and gas. Meanwhile, combined with engineering practice, we put forward the construction principle of coal exploitation and gas drainage system in different coal seam occurrence conditions. Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of preconcentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal sub systems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham Operation) is located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and is owned and operated by the Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM). Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in PBM; the Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Phu Kham Operation was commissioned in 2008 with an initial concentrator nameplate throughput of 12 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). Subsequent improvement projects, including the Phu Kham Upgrade Project (PKU), completed in 2012, and the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project (IRP), completed in 2013, increased the design throughput to 18 Mt/yr. In 2016, the actual mill throughput exceeded 19 Mt/a, this throughput is budgeted to be maintained until the end of 2020.The concentrator flotation circuit upgrade, completed during the IRP, called for a non-selective bulk sulphide concentrate to be generated from the rougher circuit. This in turn caused the mechanical flotation cells in the cleaner circuit, particularly those in the second cleaner bank, to become volumetrically overload. The overload reduced the cleaner circuit performance to approximately 92 per cent copper recovery at a 23 per cent copper concentrate grade, below the expected 95 per cent recovery. This bottleneck restricted copper units entering the plant to approximately 14.5 tonnes per hour (t/h) due to uncontrolled recirculating load build-up in the mechanical cleaning circuit.Maintaining the operating methodologies would have led to a copper production shortfall beyond 2016, to address this shortfall the Phu Kham Operation looked to optimise the Jameson Cell and mechanical cleaner circuit performance. The work included fundamental application of flotation practice and modelling, mineralogical analysis, bubble size analysis, plant surveys and test work. The results were used to develop and implement an innovative automated control system strategy incorporating flotation theory and operating strategies. The automation has the ability to quickly adapt to disturbances in the circuit and maintain optimised performance with little or no intervention by flotation operators.Upon completion, cleaner recovery increased to 95 per cent at a final concentrate grade of 23 per cent copper, and copper units entering the plant increased to 17.5 t/h.CITATION:Baas, D and Mikhael Gurieff, L, 2018. Pyro-metallurgy is still the main process for lead production and a lot of lead direct smelting processes have been developed in recent years. All the processes will experience two steps in common. The first is the oxidisation of PbS to PbO and then reduction from PbO to Pb, furthermore, from ZnO to Zn. So, the composition of melts, especially the slag composition at reduction step change continuously. Up to now, there are few systematic results on the slag physical-chemical properties with its composition change. In this work, the typical lead direct smelting processes were analysed from theoretical and practical standpoints. The full-period slag composition and slag melting point change were compared. Especially, to the PbO and ZnO reduction steps, based on the full-period slag composition change, the slag properties were predicted. Based on dust composition and test results, the mechanism of Pb compound evaporation and its effect on practice and measurement of high PbO bearing slag physical-chemical property is discussed. It is suggested that to restrain the evaporation in practice and to obtain more accurate measurement results of physicochemical properties of smelting slag are the key problem not only to set high efficiency, energy saving process, but also to environmental pollution control.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia. An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared. The difficulties of distinguishing structured and non-structured macerals of the inertinite group is discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present Stopes-Heerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

Understanding how liberated and unliberated minerals behave in comminution and classification circuits is of vital importance to ensure that maximum liberation occurs without unnecessary and costly overgrinding. This paper presents the results of a study carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre and Newcrest Mining of the liberation performance of Newcrest Mining's New Celebration grinding circuit. Using data from surveys of the circuit, together with QEM*SEM analyses of individual streams, a detailed picture of the liberation and classification of gold-associated pyrite is presented. In addition the relationship between the QEM*SEM analyses and results from laboratory leach tests are also discussed. Using the survey and QEM*SEM data, mathematical models were constructed of the performance of the ball mill and cyclones, and simulations carried out to investigate ways of improving the performance of the circuit. The results from the more promising scenarios are Reviewed.

Iron is one of the most exchanged commodities worldwide. Its use for steelmaking explains the growing demand in the metal which remains mainly produced by the mining and the beneficiation of iron ores. Flotation is the most used mineral separation technique worldwide, processing several billion tonnes (Bt) of ore annually, including, in some cases, hematite and magnetite ores. Based on the physicalchemical properties of mineral surfaces, flotation aims to selectively adsorb molecules that render mineral surfaces either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, known as collectors and depressants, respectively. Hydrophobic particles are then recovered in the froth by the injection of gas bubbles travelling up in the cell and attaching the hydrophobic particles. However, despite the popularity and the good performances of flotation, mining industry faces new challenges of decreasing grades and increased mineralogical complexness in ores. Many flotation variables, especially when related to reagent adsorption, remain poorly understood and it becomes necessary to gain knowledge to enhance the existing processes. Molecular modelling techniques like the density functional theory or molecular dynamics simulations (ie Classical molecular dynamics or Ab initio Molecular Dynamics) currently represent powerful tools for different applications in material sciences, like catalysis or depollution purposes. They have recently been successfully applied in the flotation area, with an increasing number of publications dealing with this topic every year. These tools provide crucial information on bulk and surface properties as well as on the adsorption mechanisms of reagents on mineral surfaces, key step in the flotation process, and synergetic effect of collector mixtures. A better understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of flotation reagents, provided by molecular simulations, will help to finely choose flotation reagents, and even lead to the development of new reagents formulations. Overall, these tools enable the discovery of practical and industrial solutions to improve the flotation process, which will undoubtedly help the mining industry to face its future challenges.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

Mine waste rock is unavoidable in the recovery of ore by open pit mining methods. Effective management of waste rock movement covers the removal and placement of the waste rock, generally in a surface dump in the most cost-effective way while satisfying the long-term environmental expectations. Since the 1960s, there has been significant research carried out into planning of ore movement from open pit mines such that the overall net present value (NPV) of the project can be maximised. Currently, several software packages are available to achieve this task as a common practice within the mining industry. However, planning of mine waste rock movement is still achieved manually, as the available software does not consider optimal waste rock movement and dump design. This paper describes a tool to optimise waste rock placement, which minimises the haulage cost while creating environmentally friendly waste rock dumps through selective placement and encapsulation of the reactive waste rock in the dump. The embedded methodology in this tool has been developed based on the mixed integer programming (MIP) modelling technique to optimise the waste rock movement. The methodology provides an easily-manipulated and fully-automatic tool for professionals to complete waste rock dump scheduling in four main steps: data input, model construction, model computation and solution retrieval. Net present value (NPV) has been the main criterion in mining project evaluation and production plan optimisation. It is a common practice in NPV calculations to take into account only the tangible cost items in the corporate accounting system. The costs incurred due to damage to the local ecosystem and environment are left out and treated as externalities. Such practice on the one hand underestimates the total cost of a mining operation and, on the other hand, ignores the difference in ecological/environmental impacts between different mine plan alternatives. This paper attempts to measure the ecological costs of mining and to incorporate such costs into the evaluation scheme in mining project evaluation and mine planning. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land (eg forest land, grazing land, crop land) damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from fossil fuel consumption. For the land areas (and their associated ecosystems) directly damaged by mining activities, the ecological costs are measured by the prevention and restoration costs, the lost values of eco-services of the damaged land, including bio-product production, soil erosion control, water run-off control, oxygen release, air pollutant absorption and formation of soil nutrients. The ecological cost of carbon emission from the energy consumption of a mining operation is measured by the cost of cultivating the equivalent forest land required to uptake the emitted carbon. A case study on a large-scale open pit mining project is presented to demonstrate the influence of ecological costs on the mine planning outcome.

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.
