Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

Agglomeration for Copper Heap Leaching Agglomeration of ore is a method which can be used to eliminate the migration of fine grained particles throughout a leach heap. Without agglomeration, fine ore particles are able to migration within the heap, clogging flow channels and producing large areas where access of the solution is poor. In order to gain the benefits of agglomeration and improve agglomerate strength even further in copper heap leaching, an economical, acid-resistant binder is needed. However, most binders have been used without any systematic reasoning. A set of novel testing methods were developed, including a soak test, percolation flooded columns, and larger long-term leach columns. The soak test compares the degree of breakdown when agglomerates are subjected to an acidic environment. While the percolation flooded columns and larger long-term leach columns evaluate the flow of leach solution throughout the ore bed. Systematic studies have been completed on a wide range of binders using these novel testing procedures. It was found that for a low grade chalcocite ore, which was rich in silica, from a southwest US mine, polyacrylamides reduced the fines migration the best in the novel soak test. The non-ionic binder, in particular, was found to reduce fines migration as much as 93 per cent. Several of the binders tested were shown to increase the hydraulic conductivities of the agglomerated ore up to 2.5 mm/sec, compared to a hydraulic conductivity of only 0.25 mm/sec when no binder was used. These binders also prevented 'slumping' of the ore, which indicates a decrease in breakdown of the agglomerates. The use of a binder also showed no interference with leaching reactions in long-term leaching experiments.

Davis tube tests were conducted on a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample, supplied by Kingstream Steel Ltd, to determine the optimum grind size, maximum iron recovery and the cleanness of the products from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS). The ore sample contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina. XRD and microscopic examination showed that the main minerals in the ore were amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent), and quartz (14 per cent). Amphibole, (Mg, Ca, Fe),Si8O22.2(OH), containing 50.3 per cent SiO2, 35 per cent FeO and 11.5 per cent MgO is the main gangue mineral in the ore, and about 30 per cent of the total iron in the ore is contained in the amphibole. Heavy liquid separation tests showed that it is very difficult to separate iron from silica by gravity separation to obtain a high quality iron concentrate. Three grind sizes were initially tested, ie 45, 38 and 20 ¦m. It was found that grinding to 100 per cent -38 ¦m (P80 of 29 ¦m) appeared to be the best option for liberating the magnetite from gangue minerals. The iron recovery to the LIMS magnetic product for the 100 per cent -38 ¦m sample reached 73 per cent and the iron content was 65 per cent. Further test work suggested that the optimum grind size was a Psu of 25 ¦m.

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. The theme of the conference is "excellence", an epithet of special significance in tertiary education. It appears in the mission statements, goals and plans to achieve them of most, and quite possibly all, tertiary institutions in Australia. In the context of excellence, this paper examines the current statue of professional education in the principal mining industry related discipline of Mining Engineering. It furthermore, identifies and discusses a number of special problems in mining education that the tertiary sector has long endured. Some of these problems are becoming acute, and solutions will have to be found soon in order for the industry to be assured of the supply of well motivated and appropriately qualified young engineers and scientists necessary to achieve and maintain the excellent to which it aspires.

HYL developed a direct reduction process (DR) that does not require a reformer; it is called self-reforming process. Typically, direct reduction processes based on natural gas utilise a reformer unit to transform the natural gas into reducing agents (hydrogen and carbon monoxide). The reforming reactions are: CH4+H20-?3H2+CO CH4 + CO2 - 2H2 + 2CO These reforming units require a catalyst agent to promote the kinetics of the reforming reactions. The catalyst for these reactions is typically a metallic element such as nickel in a ceramic matrix; iron is also an excellent catalyst for the reforming reactions.

Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

The development of protocols to specifically deal with the highly regulated and ever changing, mining and environmental legislation. demonstrates mining companies can successfully opcrationalise the concept of sustainable development.

The Kalgoorlie Tailings Retreatment Project (or "Kaltails") involves the reclamation and retreatment of approximately 50 million tonnes of gold tailing situated on the Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Tailing is reclaimed and retreated at the rate of 42 million tonnes per annum. The project is a Joint Venture between Poseidon Limited and Gold Corporation, with Poseidon being the major participant (90%) and manager of the operation through its wholly owned subsidiary Kaltails Mining Services Pty Ltd. The marginal nature of the tailing retreatment project dictated that a detailed feasibility study be undertaken. Extensive sampling and metallurgical testing of the tailing permitted the development of an optimum economic processing route. A sensitivity analysis undertaken as part of the feasibility study indicated the project to be very sensitive to gold price and unit operating cost variations, and relatively insensitive to capital cost variations.

THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. Machine-made bricks from Melbourne would cost about £5 10s. per thousand on the site, with extra for radials, so that high cost again resulted. On the score...

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Australia identified a number of issues in regard to the skill levels, labour turnover and productivity of our service technicians. In 1994 we were experiencing a labour turnover rate of 42 per cent per annum amongst our technicians. Exit interviews were held with each individual and one of the major areas of dissatisfaction was the degree of product training provided on our equipment, compared to what is required to be competent across the range of our products. These tradespersons were prepared to accept the reduced remuneration that an OEM offers, for the benefit of comprehensive, professional training that, in theory, could be provided. The truth is that we were achieving approximately 40 per cent of our target for training hours because of the demands of field service, pre-deliveries, etc. So, the summary was the same as the industry was experiencing at that time because of skilled labour shortages, production demands, etc people were employed and thrown in at the deep end. A recipe for failure that will be successful every time.

The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. The combined use of regional whole-rock geochemistry, SWIR and mineral chemistry is an effective way to highlight prospective areas for VHMS mineralisation in a mature exploration province.CITATION:Wu, S, Gemmell, J B, McNeill, A W and Richardson, S M, 2015. Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.
