Gold is extracted by cyanidation of a sulphide-rich concentrate at Macraes mine, and after cyanidation, the concentrate is discharged to tailings impoundments. The concentrate tailings were discharged to a dedicated concentrate impoundment from 1989 to 1993, afterwhich they were blended with the flotation tailings. Since mid-1998, concentrate tailings have been redirected to the dedicated concentrate impoundment. The concentrate tailings contain up to 1 ppm gold, and will be reprocessed in the future. However, it is a regulatory requirement that a contingency plan be in place to rehabilitate the concentrate tailings should the mine operation cease for any reason. Initial predictions suggested that the sulphide-rich tailings would oxidise and acidify, creating a potential long term environmental problem. Investigations of the state of the tailings after 4 years show that these predictions were overly conservative. Only minor oxidation has occurred in the upper 2 metres of the tailings where the pH has locally dropped from 10 (discharge condition) to between 7 and 8. Below 2 metres, the tailings are essentially unchanged from their deposition state. The low rate of change in the tailings is due to their very low permeability which in turn is a consequence of the fine grain size (ca. 15 ¦m). Dewatering is extremely slow, and incursion of oxygenated water is negligible. Calculations suggest that water movement over 30 m will take at least 100 years and possibly 1000 years. The contingency plan is to capitalise on the very low permeability and keep the tailings from drying with a semipermeable cap. A layer of limestone will be added to the top of the tailings, beneath the cap, to enhance alkalinity of any percolating water. If acidification does occur, contrary to expectations, any acid produced will be neutralised by underlying calcite-bearing schist, schist in the concentrate impoundment wall, and the flotation tailings immediately downstream. In addition, dilution by alkaline ground and surface waters would further ameliorate any acidic discharge.

The Small Pebble Process for Reducing Ball and Power Consumption in Secondary Grinding Ball mills are used widely for secondary grinding. A mixture of ball sizes can be used to optimise grinding efficiency, but the use of balls smaller than about 30 mm in diameter is not normally viable, particularly when alloy steel is required. Preliminary testing of the grinding efficiency of various combinations of 40 mm steel balls and crushed stone in the size range 7 to 25 mm was carried out in a 300 mm diameter mill, which has accurate power measurement.The primary interest was to assess the potential benefit of adding small pebbles (from a primary circuit crusher or mill) to a secondary ball mill, to reduce ball consumption and to improve grinding efficiency. The optimum proportion of pebbles was found to be about 25 per cent by volume. This mixture produced about the same amount of fines as balls alone, but with lower power consumption, due to the lower density of the pebbles. The net result was a 12 per cent saving in power and a 25 per cent saving in ball consumption. The production of fines was partly due to pebble wear. The use of portions of 15 mm balls, (ceramic and steel), was also tested for comparison. A few batch pilot-scale tests were conducted in a 1.2 m diameter, 0.31 m long mill to test the viability of the pebbles at a larger scale. The pilot-scale tests confirmed the reduction in power and that the rate of production of fines was the same as that obtained with balls. The same residence time was used and this implies that pebbles can be added to an existing full-scale ball mill, with no loss in capacity. Samples of secondary mill feed and pebbles were obtained from a copper mine and the steady-state consumption of pebbles was determined by locked-cycle laboratory-scale tests. These tests demonstrated that mill power could be reduced by up 13 per cent and that the consumption of 40 mm balls could be reduced by up to 38 per cent, while maintaining the same throughput and product size. The rate of pebble addition was about 4 per cent of the primary circuit feed rate. Application has been made for patent protection.

A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. The first test run on the pilot plant was carried out in February, 1962. After some modification a second test of longer duration was conducted in August, 1962. Oceana Gold (NZ) LtdÆs, Macraes Gold Operation currently has two tailings impoundments, the larger of which covers approximately 75 ha. When an impoundment is temporarily out of use, the surface dries and dust can be blown from the surface to the surrounding area. At present water spraying is used to stabilise the surface, but this is not ideal as Macraes mine can experience water shortages during the summer. This paper examines an alternative method of surface stabilisation using vegetation as a ground cover. The tailings have a low natural fertility, so it is important to determine what will actually grow in the tailings, and whether amendments are necessary. Also important is the effect of the amendments on arsenic mobility in the tailings as the schist rock at Macraes has naturally elevated levels of arsenic. Three plants species, rye corn, barley, and lupin, were grown in metre-deep lysimeters at Macraes mine site. The plants were grown in unaltered tailings, and tailings with one of two amendments added: Bioboost (an organic fertiliser containing biosolids), and superphosphate fertiliser. The leachate from each lysimeter was collected and analysed monthly to determine the extent of arsenic mobility. In addition, laboratory experiments were set up to determine arsenic mobility in tailings with amendments at the centimetre scale.   All plants grew best with the fertiliser amendment, with rye corn growing the best overall. Plants growing in unaltered tailings either barely survived (rye corn, barley) or died (lupin). Plants in the Bioboost amended tailings grew only slightly better than in the unamended tailings. Laboratory experiments indicate that the addition of phosphate fertiliser greatly increases arsenic leaching at the centimetre scale when compared to unamended tailings. The addition of Bioboost only marginally increases arsenic leaching, compared to unamended tailings. This trend has not been repeated in the lysimeter trials on the metre scale over four months. Current results suggest that of the plant types trialed and amendments used, rye corn with superphosphate is the most practical short-term tailings stabilisation method at Macraes.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

The Scanning Electron Microscope – Mineral Liberation Analyzer (SEM-MLA) laboratory, as part of the Core Research Equipment and Instrument Training (CREAIT) network of laboratories at Memorial University, NL, Canada, has recently published efforts towards increasing the throughput of automated mineralogy systems by producing single-step trans-vertical moulds, rather than traditional 30 mm polished epoxy moulds. Due to the small particle size of iron ore grains in the -200 mesh size fraction (<75 µm), not all of the surface area on a mould is needed for measurement in achieving good statistical representation. In a new study, trimming of the excess area of a mould results in a smaller sample and increases the quantity of unique samples that can fit in a newly designed trans-vertical adapter for a FEITM MLA 650 field emission gun (FEG) scanning electron microscope. The complete analysis, using a newly designed sample block holder capable of holding 98 samples, required 57 hours of running time where each sample had an average of 33?400 particles measured and identified. The analysis was calibrated to allow for off-line discrimination of hematite/magnetite. The calculated Fe-assay values derived from MLA results were compared to those from bulk sample chemical assay. This shows the Fe assay having a correlation coefficient of >0.99 when the particle count is greater than 20?000. This study represents the most expedient method yet reported to prepare well-polished samples and analyse them in a timely manner that can allow for quicker results in process mineralogy.CITATION:Grant, D C, Goudie, D J and Baird, E, 2017. Increasing the throughput of the MMG Century operation by over 25% from past practice to preserve cash flow close to the end of life of mine has revealed new throughput and load dynamic instabilities in the SAG mill causing significant time averaged loss of production. A twelve microphone array around the SAG mill (Pax, 2014) using the non-contact acoustic measurement methodology (Pax, 2011, 2012) has been used to diagnose the new dynamics. Dynamic acoustic noise signal information allows discrimination of the behaviour of the steel balls and the rock. Determination of mill load, toe and shoulder angles, water holdup, and proxies for mill load are possible.The instability was diagnosed with the help of an abnormality in the liners/lifters of the SAG mill with one row of lifters having a slightly increased in-mill life compared to the rest. The steel shoulder angle is observed to be disturbed cyclically at a rate of precisely one revolution at low throughputs of 750 t/h. However, at throughputs closer to 1100 t/h, the cyclic signal disappears indicating additional dynamics to randomise the repetitive behaviour of the mill charge. The cyclic signal has been used to operate the SAG mill with improved stability at 1100 t/h by adjusting the feed water addition rate.This paper presents and discusses these results and proposes the suggested origin of the extra dynamics. A small consistent aberration of the lifters circumferentially provides a useful detector of stable mill operation and a novel sensor for the dynamics of the internal operation of a SAG mill.CITATION:Pax, R A and Cornish, B, 2015. The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomorphological element formed since late Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite associated with a series of raised shorelines. The location of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping Archaen granite/ granulite complex and a sea current pattern determined by local geography and a prevailing wind direction. A progression from medium to high titanium ilmenite is evident parallelled by progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variations in trace element content accompany this process. Circulating groundwater has caused vertical mineralogical variations within individual deposits and by precipitation of iron has formed layers of hardpan.The Geographe Bay deposits are of important economic significance.INTRODUCTIONObservations made during the course of a brief survey of the southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain provide an outline of the geology and mineralogy of the mineral sand deposits of the area. This preliminary study will require considerable modification in the light of more detailed work in the future.REGIONAL GEOLOGYThe Geographe Bay area is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia between longitudes 115° O'W. and 116° O'W. and latitudes 33° 15'S. and 33° 45'S.The general geology of the area is shown in Fig. 1 where the control of the physiography exercised by the Cape Leeuwin-Cape Naturaliste basement ridge is readily apparent. Between this ridge and the Precambrian east of the Darling fault lies the southern part of the Perth basin which contains outcropping Jurassic to Recent sediments and lavas (McWhae, et al., 1958).The Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge is the exposed portion of L Assistant Production Managcr. Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.

Enterprise Optimisation is a methodology for increasing the value of mining and mineral processing operations through better long-term planning decisions. It involves a combination of ten mechanisms which deal with decisions at different stages of the value chain. A decision made at any point in the chain potentially affects the decision for all other points in the chain. The key, therefore, is to optimise them simultaneously. The Enterprise Optimisation approach can be shown to produce increases of five per cent to 35 per cent or more in net present value (NPV), even when several optimisation methods have already been applied. This paper steps through an example case study, illustrating the effect of each mechanism and how they can work together to develop greatly improved results. This example results in a series of counter-intuitive outcomes, which challenges conventional management practices and typical organisational objectives based on organisational silos.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (>300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades.   The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities <1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

In this paper, the Australian thick coal seam underground mining potential is highlighted and the characteristics are investigated by analysing a thick seam database. It is clear that thick coal seam resources should be mined with a high recovery, productive, efficient as well as a safe and reliable mining method. Longwall Top-Coal Caving (LTCC) is the most recent thick coal seam mining method which has been developed and extensively used in China for the last ten years. The successful applications indicate that this method has a very high recovery and productivity rate and less development cost in comparison with any other thick coal seam mining method. One of the aims of the current study is to seek potential for the application of LTCC as a thick seam mining method in Australia. In this paper, preliminary results of investigation on Australian thickseam potential are given and results of data analysis for potential LTCC seams in Australia are described. The outcome of this study shows a great promise for the application of LTCC in Australian coal industry.
