Previous to the war, this country depended on Europe for its supply of a number of alloys of great importance in the manufacture of electrical apparatus and equipment. When this source was cut off shortly after the beginning of hostilities and the small stocks in the United States were exhausted, either inferior substitutes had to be used or the manufacture of the apparatus suspended. Since electrical equipment was of primary importance in the prosecution of the war, the substitutes had to be used until the composition and processes of manufacture of the alloys could be determined. Included among these alloys was one generally known as manganin, which is composed chiefly of copper and manganese and which, beside having a low-temperature coefficient of resistance, has a low thermal electromotive force against copper. These qualities make it valuable for the manufacture of electrical instruments and machines in which it is used in the shape of wire, rod, and strip. As a result of these circumstances, an investigation was started to determine how manganin could be made on a commercial basis so that a product of uniform quality and the necessary electrical characteristics could be produced. The object was to procure an alloy with temperature coefficient of resistance not greater than 1 X 1X per " C. and a thermal e.m.f. against copper no greater than that of the imported material. It is characteristic of manganin that the temperature-resistance curve is not a straight line but has a peak, which varies in position with different samples; it is most desirable, however, to have it at a temperature of 25' C. if possible. The coefficients of manganin from all records available ranged from a large negative to a large positive value. The composition as reported by different authorities is given in Table I. Prof. Matthew A. Hunter, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, made up a number of small melts of manganin in a graphite crucible and the one that he reported as having the best cocfficient gave the following analysis: Copper, 83.6 per cent.; nickel 2.5 per cent.; manganese, 13.6 per cent.; iron, 0.3 per cent. An analysis of a sample of German manganin gave the following: Copper, 82.6 per cent.; nickel, 3.8 pcr cent.; manganese, 12.8 per cent.; iron 0.7 per cent.

Much has been written and said concerning the alleged wasteful and uneconomic use of natural gas and petroleum. Espccially condemned has been the use of natural gas for the production of carbon black and the use of heavy fuel oil under steam boilers.' The critics of these usages of gas and oil have sought to make effective their verbal attacks on the industry by the repetitive expression of the words "inferior" and "superior" uses2 of petroleum. Thus, to employ natural gas for residential heating was to use it in a superior way; to use it for the production of carbon black was to use it in a wasteful and uneconomic way. To use petroleum for the production of automotive fuel was to use it in a superior way; to employ it as a residential fuel and as the prime source of power in an industrial plant was to use it in an inferior and uneconomic way. No doubt the objections to such employment of gaseous and liquid natural hydrocarbons originated in the belief that natural gas and petroleum are limited, nonregenerative mineral resources, and that the functions they perform can be just as well performed by other natural resources like coal13 of which practically unlimited reserves are known. The generations that have dominated each of the last four decades have counted reserves4 of petroleum in terms of a few years supply. Meanwhile, domestic demand for motor fuel rose spectacularly from a few million barrels in 1900 to more than 500,000,000 bbl. last year.5 The more imaginative and vocal critics drew startling word pictures of the catastrophe of 25,000,000 motor vehicles made useless and of the great automotive manufacturing and allied industries brought to an untimely end, and millions of workers left hopelessly unemployed by what they called the deplorably rapid depletion of the petroleum reserve. Many of the critics have been sincere advocates of the conservation of natural resources; many others, and in recent years probably the majority, have espoused the doctrine of conservation to promote their own self-interest rather than that of the public. The latest advocate of severe restriction in the use of petroleum for the alleged purpose of conserving the petroleum resource proposes to achieve that end by a bill,6 now before

A centennial meeting should be a time to take stock, to evaluate performance, to plan ahead. It is like a line in a televised commercial that goes, "You've come a long way to get where you've got to today." And no less should be said of the mining and energy industries. We have come a long way. A hundred years ago when AIME was founded, this country produced 23 million tons of bituminous coal and 5.2 million bbl of oil. The figures in 1970 were about 580 million tons of coal and 4.1 billion bbl of oil. In spite of such accomplishments, serious and compelling voices are heard in the land - doubting sincerity, questioning corporate structures, and challenging ethics. Those doubts are raised in one part of Washington at the same time that other sections of the Capitol are asking us to produce more energy in order to keep up with population growth, emerging nations, and new technologies. Those of us in the fuel or energy business frequently talk about the race for energy. The question is, can we develop enough energy fast enough to outdistance our present and increasing demands? Recently I heard of an incident that - in an odd way - caused me to think of the energy race. The incident involved a sky-diver who jumped from an airplane without a parachute. He was handed a chute in mid-air by a sky-diving companion. He put it on, opened it, and landed safely. In a way, it seems to me that our society is hurtling through space and that it needs some help from the energy industries to land safely. We're doing our best, but under some rather difficult conditions. Because of illegal strikes and work stoppages the coal parachute is snarled a bit. The cut in percentage depletion and other tax changes have put some holes in the oil parachute. And the gas ´'chute has been in trouble for some time because of unrealistic controls on producer prices. The irony of the situation is that some of the very people who have been taking potshots at the energy parachutes for a long time are the ones who are complaining loudest now because the 'chutes are not functioning the way they could. The safety of the entire nation can depend on the energy industries.

During 1939, Indiana experienced a grcat increase in prospecting and drilling for oil and gas. Major activity, as during the preceding year, was in the southwestern part of the state, the Indiana portion of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin. An increasing interest was evident during the year, however, in the entire state, chiefly in northern Indiana (on the south flanks of the Michigan Basin) and in the old Trenton field of east central Indiana. In the latter area several tests to deeper horizons in the Trenton and to the underlying St. Peter sandstone were completed. Results in this area have been discouraging, however, since these deeper horizons are very erratic. The regional structure in the Indiana portion of the Michigan Basin is generally favorable to oil accumulation, but the picture is complicated by a uniform mantle of glacial drift and a lack of subsurface information. Several wells were started during the last half of 1939 to test the Devonian and Trenton formations in this area. Production from these formations was found at several localities many years ago, hut, no sustained effort has been made to locate pools in this area, which covers perhaps 20 counties. There were 377 wells completed in Indiana during 1939, and 77 others were in various stages of drilling at the close of the year. Of the 377 completed, 255 were classed as field locations and 122 as wildcats. The field wells were divided as follows: 156 oil wells, 39 gas wells, and 60 dry holes; the wildcats: 98 dry holes, 19 oil wells and 5 gas wells (wildcat oil and gas wells include deeper production in oil fields and field extensions as well as new field discoveries). During the year 218 more wells were completed than during 1938. Outstanding developments for 1939 include the discovery of several new oil and gas fields. In the Griffin field, which was discovered during the closing days of the previous year, 103 wells were drilled, including field extensions. Of these, 97 were productive oil wells. This field now covers more than 2000 acres of productive area and has not as yet been defined. There are five producing horizons in the field, including the Waltersburg, Tar Springs, Elwren, and Aux Vases sandstones of Chester age and the McClosky horizon of the Ste. Genevieve limestone. For the first time in the history of the Venezuelan petroleum industry production exceeded 200 million barrels. The total production for all fields amounted to 205,430,869 bbl., which is more than 9 per cent of the world's 1939 total. This is an increase of over 15 million barrels or 8.0 per cent above the 1938 figure, which, compared with the slightly less than 2 per cent increase of the 1938 figure over 1937, shows the marked activity in Venezuela during the past year. The Maracaibo Lake fields are still the predominating factor in Venezuelan production, showing an increase of approximately 9½ million barrels over last year's figure and accounting for 71.8 per cent of Venezuela's total. Lagunillas continues to hold precedence as a single field, having yielded 47.1 per cent of the accumulative total and 39.4 per cent of 1939's total. This field showed an increase of slightly more than 3½ million barrels over 1938. Tia Juana, the second largest field, attained a record production, increasing its percentage of the Venezuelan total from 23.4 in 1938 to 23.7 in 1939. The La Rosa field, which includes Punta Benitez and Ambrosio, declined from 13.7 to 12.0 per cent; Bachaquero, the southernmost Lake field, which came into regular production at the end of 1938, contributed over 31/3 million barrels. Quiriquire, in eastern Venezuela, ousted La Rosa as the third largest producing field, and, although production increased by 11/3 milliorl barrels, percentage of the total declined from 13.2 to 12.9. Mene Grande, the oldest field, declined from 6.6 per cent in 1938 to 5.9 in 1939. Tem-blador produced for a whole year for the first time and yielded 3,647,867 bbl. The Colon district, in the Maracaibo Lake area, comprising the Tarra-Los Manueles fields, showed slight increases, as also did Cumarebo and Pedernales. Construction of the 16-in. pipe line from Oficina to Puerto La Cruz (Guanta), the longest line of this size in the world, was completed toward the end of the year and this new field in eastern Venezuela started shipping oil in December. This field is operated by the Mene Grande Oil Co. and was credited with a production of 2,347,625 bbl. in 1939. Jusepin field, some 25 miles southwest of Quiriquire in eastern Venezuela,

Developments in California during 1942 were marked by many difficulties in operation, of which the lack of labor and material were the main factors in slowing down work. During the many years of curtailment, which has been effective since 1928, a number of estimates of the state's capacity to produce have been built up, but during the year 44 fields were 'eliminated from curtailment and valuable data were obtained as to the normal capacity of these fields to produce. Because of new discoveries and the normal decline of old fields, which is more than 15 per cent per year, it is estimated that the sustained capacity of the state for a 5-year period is not more than 500,000 bbl. per day. Decline in the rate of production was greatest in the fields in the Los Angeles Basin district. These fields have been produced nearly at capacity for many years and had no reserve of shut-in production. The San Joaquin Valley and Coastal districts have responded well to the increased allotments assigned to them by the Petroleum Administrator for War. All heavy oil fields in the state are on full production, except in the Coastal district, where transportation is the limiting factor. Although approximately 2500 more wells are on production in the state than there were in 1941, the supply of heavy crude has not yet reached the demand. A summary of statistics for 1941 and 1942 is given in the following table. Production in California for 1942 was 680,000 bbl. a day as against 631,000 bbl. a day for 1941, an increase of 7.8 per cent. The present maximum efficient rate has been estimated at 808,000 bbl. per day. This indicates that in the 15 restricted fields of the state there is only an additional 83,000 bbl. per day of light oil available. Drilling Activity Drilling activity during the year was equivalent to but 70 per cent of normal. Although shortages of equipment and labor were in part responsible for the reduced drilling activity, the main reasons were the lack of proved locations due to a cycle of very few new discoveries and the restrictions of Conservation Order M-68. The rates of nucleation and growth at various temperatures in U-0.45, 1.1, and 1.35 at. pet Cr alloys were determined, providing a qliantitative proo-f that the transformation under study is controlled by nucleation and diffusional growth. The linear relationship, log NV US 1/T2, suggests that the nucleation of the alloys is probably controlled by the classical law of nuclei formation. The established linear relationship, log G us 1/T, in the three alloys suggests that growth in each alloy is controlled by bidimensional nuclei formation. It was established that both the rate of growth and the rale of nucleation are retarded by chromium. Using classical formulae, sApN and sApG (the ß/a apparent interphase energies) were calculated from the nucleation and growth results, respectively. It was found that their values are of the same order of magnitude. However, why sApN is unaffected by the addition of chromium, while sApG increases with it, needs further clarification. In the last few years, an appreciable amount of research has been conducted into the mechanism of the ß —a transformation in uranium and uranium alloys. Recently, Burke1 reviewed the published work concerned with this transformation. He concluded that in dilute uranium alloys it is firmly established that, at high temperatures in the a range, ß decomposes by a diffusional process. However, he based his conclusion either on experiments dealing with the over-all transformation,2 or on qualitative results.3 It was felt that a better insight into the mechanism of transformation could be gained from the quantitative measurements of growth and nucleation rates, which we aimed to carry out in the present work. In a previous work,4 we have shown that a rim of a grains is formed during isothermal transformation at the high a range. The thickening of this rim with time was used for measuring the rate of growth in U-0.45 at. pet Cr.5 This method was also used in the present work for two more alloys. For meas- uring the rate of nucleation, a method of quenching and macroetching was developed to allow differentiation between a grains formed during isothermal transformation at the upper a range and those formed after quenching, Fig. 1. THE preferred orientations, or textures, resulting from many of the various methods for testing and forming metals have been the subject of numerous investigations.1,2* Despite this large amount of work, however, only a few limited studies have been made of the texture that is developed by torsional deformation. Ono3 found that in severely twisted wires of copper and aluminum a [Ill] direction lies parallel and a [1101 direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the wire. Sachs and Schiebold4 have reported that a double-fiber texture exists in a twisted aluminum wire with both the [Ill] and [loo] directions parallel to the axis of the wire. Twisted iron wires have also been examined by Ono.8 Both the [1101 and [1121 directions were reported as parallel to the axis of the wire. Goss5 concluded from a study of twisted rods of a low-carbon steel that the preferred orientation existing at fracture is quite complex, but that many grains have a [1101 direction parallel to the axis of the wire. In addition to the earlier experimental work, some suggestions have been made about the possible nature of the torsion texture. These suggestions are based on the results of many experiments which indicate that the cold-working texture of a particular metal is largely determined by the geometrical change in shape that the metal undergoes during plastic deformation.1,6 Hibbard and Yen7 have considered the problem of deformation textures and have presented an analysis which is able to explain why equivalent changes in shape should yield similar textures. Therefore, a knowledge of the principal strains associated with torsional deformation would seem helpful in the interpretation of the torsion texture. The necessary analysis has been made of the state of strain in an element of metal lying in the surface of a cylindrical rod or tube that has been subjected to pure torsion.8,9 This analysis shows that the directions of the principal normal strains rotate continuously within a torsion specimen while it is being twisted. After the first infinitesimal amount of twisting, these directions make angles of 45" with the longitudinal axis of the bar. They rotate from this position as twisting proceeds, and after an infinite amount of twisting, the direction of the principal tensile strain is perpendicular, and the direction

An approximate theoretical model is proposed to quantitatively predict freezing ranges Tf and hydrostatic tensions P developed within solidifying binary alloys, allowing for a certain amount of diffusion of solute in the solid during solidification. The maxima in ATf and AP as functions of composition are shorn to occur at smaller solute concentrations than would be expected from the equilibrium diagram, and are found to correspond closely to experimentally observed maxima in microporosity. THE freezing range of simple binary alloys appears to have been little studied, except for certain indirect observations on the defects, particularly microporosity and hot tearing, arising in long freezing range materials. Two theories relating to the freezing range of alloys and its effect upon porosity are reasonably well established, and appear to have been held in isolation from each other: a) From purely equilibrium considerations early researchers expected that an increase in solute content of an alloy should increase the freezing range (defined here as the equilibrium freezing range ?Tf = Tl-Ts where TL and Ts are the liquidus and solidus temperatures, respectively) and thereby increase the width of the pasty zone for a given set of conditions. This in turn should increase the difficulty of feeding the residual liquid through the dendrite mesh to compensate for the contraction on solidification, and consequently tend to increase the observed amount of porosity. From qualitative observations on steels Czikel1 reports an increase in porosity with increasing carbon content up to 0.46 pct C. More careful measurements by Whittenberger and Rhines2 on fourteen different alloy systems showed an approximately linear relation between ?Tf and pct porosity (although unfortunately the precise experimental data is not given). b) Conversely however, other authors3"5 propose that porosity is reduced by the presence of increased amounts of eutectic present at the final solidification temperature. Lees7 and Bochvar6 claim that the hot tearing of alloys is similarly reduced. Scheuer8 has put forward a theory to explain this effect, Fig. 1. The argument is basically that solidification progresses on a plane front through a relatively open dendrite network and is thus (the argument is not developed more explicitly) easier to feed. THERE is a conspicuous lack of information in the literature on the precise role played by residual quantities of austenite in heat-treated steels. While retained austenite may be expected to have significant effects on such important properties as the impact resistance of tools and carburized parts and the dimensional stability of dies and gauges, attempts to study these problems systematically have suffered from the absence of a reliable technique for ascertaining absolute amounts of austenite. With such a technique, not only could the relation between residual austenite and service behavior be investigated, but the chemical and heat-treatment factors that control the quantity of the austenite could also be established. Thus, the retained austenite content could then be regulated in accordance with the results desired. The presence of retained austenite may be inferred by observing the changes in properties (hardness, specific volume, electrical resistance, etc.) due to its decomposition on subatmospheric cooling1 or on tempering,2 but these indirect measurements are not readily translated into percentages of austenite. Quantitative determinations have been achieved in special cases by means of dilatometric3 and magnetic4,5 measurements; but the former procedure requires that observations be conducted during the hardening and involves difficult calibrations that limit its applicability, while the magnetic procedure is very sensitive to extraneous influences and depends upon assumptions that can only be considered as approximate in an absolute sense. Furthermore, both the dilatometric and magnetic effects are volume properties, and cannot be conveniently utilized to explore variations in retained austenite from point to point in a specimen. Some microstructures lend themselves to accurate evaluation of retained austenite contents by metallographic methods,3 but such instances are not too common, and at best, the procedure is tedious. The characteristic X-ray diffraction lines of austenite permit positive identification of its presence; and in the present paper the intensities of these lines, or the corresponding densities* on photographic film, are employed to measure the amount of the retained austenite. In order to cancel the effect of uncontrollable variations in the X-ray exposure and film-development conditions, a standard reference line is superimposed on each film by maintaining a foil of aluminum in the path of the incident X-ray beam during the entire exposure. The sulfur content of coal is perhaps more important in the manufacture of illuminating gas than in any other coal-using industry. Whether the gas is made by the distillation of coal in retorts or ovens or by steaming incandescent coal or coke in the water-gas process, a portion of the sulfur present in the fuel always passes into the crude gas. Practically all the sulfur that remains in the finished gas is transformed into sulfur dioxide (SO2) when the gas is burned. Sulfur dioxide is a pungent suffocating gas and, if present in the air in any perceptible amount, is deleterious to health and comfort and damaging to house furnishings. SO universally is this recognized that laws regulating the amount of sulfur that may be permitted to remain in the gas are very generally in force. The capacity of a plant to purify gas frequently limits the selection of coal for gas making. This condition may arise from different causes. Some plants were originally designed to handle a certain grade of low-sulfur gas coal, and very little leeway was allowed for growth or for the use of inferior coals. Other plants, when built, had ample capacity to purify gas from relatively higher sulfur coals, but their output has grown so rapidly that their purifying capacity is now limited and only the low-sulfur coals can be handled. There is a great quantity of coal in the United States that would satisfy the requirements of the gas manufacturer, were it not for the high sulfur content. The coals containing less than 1 per cent. sulfur are becoming scarcer year by year and, in time, the gas industry will probably be compelled to use coals that are now considered out of the question. Sulfur Compounds in CRude Gas Sulfur exists in unpurified illuminating gas in a variety of compounds; chief of these are hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon disulfide (CS2). In crude coal gas H2S is usually present to the extent of 0.5 to 2.0 per cent., by volume, equivalent to about 300 to 1200 gr. per 100 cu. ft. of gas. RESEARCH CORP., LA HABRA, CALIF. Thermal diffusivities of some typical sedimentary rocks have been measured by a rapid unsteady-state technique. Thermal data including diffusivity and conductivity are presented for the temperature range of 200" to 1,800°F. Diffusivities calculated from steady-state conductivity rneasurernents compared favorably with unsteady-state data at the lower temperatures. Unsteady-state data are less reliable at higher temperatures; reported values may be as much as 20 per cent high at temperatures in excess of 1,500°F. This is caused partly by the simplified method used in calculating diffusivity from experimental data and partly by the many thermal reactions which occur at the higher temperatures. The marked decrease in thermal diffusivity and conductivity at elevated temperatures indicates the importance of considering the temperature dependence of thermal properties in subsurface heat-transfer calculntions. Knowledge of the effects of liquid saturation, overburden and pore pressures, and heats of reaction of reservoir materials will be required before complete subsurface thermal analyses may be made. INTRODUCTION Heat-transfer calculations are becoming increasingly important in the analysis of in situ combustion and underground nuclear explosions. Thermal data for natural rock materials at elevated temperatures are generally unavailable. Calculations at high temperatures may be grossly inaccurate if temperature-dependent thermal properties of rocks are not considered. It is known that the heat capacities of rocks increase with temperature. Heat capacities may be calculated from chemical or mineralogica1 analyses of the rock system. Thermal bulk expansion of rocks is believed to be small, although few data are available. Thermal conductivities of most natural rock materials decrease with increased temperature. Thermal diffusivity, defined as the thermal conductivity divided by the product of the heat capacity and the bulk density of the material, is used in unsteadv-state heat-transfer calculations. It is apparent that thermal diffusivity decreases markedly with increased temperature. A new method, which gives a nearly continuous record of thermal diffusivity within the temperature range of 200° to 1,800°F and requires less than 1.5 hours for the run,' was used to measure the diffusivity of several sedimentary rocks. Thermal conductivities were calculated from measured bulk densities, heat capacities calculated from chemical analysis and the measured diffusivity values. Thermal conductivities were measured at lower temperatures by a steady-state technique1 to test the agreement of data obtained by the two methods.

The thermal decomposition of Nickel (II) sulfate was examined by determining the total pressure of SO3, SO2, and O2 developed over a sample when it was heated in an evacuated system fitted with a Pyrex-bellows mercury manometer. The equilibrium pressures were combined with previously published data on the oxide and sulfide systems to establish a predominance volume diagranz for the Ni-S-O system over the normal range of roasting temperature and gas composition used in the treatment of nickel minerals. The protective coating of NiSO4 which forms on the oxide during roasting, and which causes the sulfation reaction to almost cease, may be disengaged readily by temperature cycling. When nickel sulfide is roasted in air, either nickel sulfate or nickel oxide may be formed by altering the experimental conditions. Because of the differing stabilities of various metal sulfates and oxides, possibilities exist for separating some of the constituents of mineral mixtures by the technique of selective sulfation and oxidation roasting. The experimental information required to make reasonable predictions of the possibilities of this technique is incomplete and, in some cases, in conflict. As part of a general program of providing some of the required information, a study EXPERIMENTAL Materials, Apparatus, and Procedure. Fisher certified reagent-grade nickel sulfate hexahydrate was used in the source material for both nickel sulfate and nickel oxide. The manufacturer's analysis indicated: 0.001 pct Fe, 0.005 pct Cu, 0.003 pct Co, 0.001 pct C1, other 0.15 pct. The material was dehydrated, before use, by heating at 420°C for 5 hr. The oxide was prepared by roasting the sulfate in an open tray in a muffle furnace for 10 hr at950°C. Preliminary experiments which were made by thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis established that only one crystal form of nickel oxide and one of nickel sulfate were involved in the equilibrium shown in Eq. [I]. The apparatus used in the experiments was described previously.1,3 The main feature is a corrosion-resistant, flexible Pyrex bellows which is used to protect the mercury in a u-tube manometer. Before a run was begun, the apparatus was washed thoroughly with hot hydrochloric acid and water and dried by heating under vacuum. Despite artificial curtailment in all the fields of Mexico during 1937, owing to strikes and other disturbances, the production of crude petroleum aggregated approximately 46,738,000 bbl., showing a substantial increase of about 5,571,000 bbl. over the preceding year. Most of this increase occurred in the Poza Rica area, where, although only two wells were completed during the year, production increased from 14,162,000 bbl. in 1936 to 18,634,000 in 1937. While production in the South fields (Golden Lane) remained practically stationary, the output in the heavy-oil district of the Northern fields showed an increase of 1,930,000 bbl., because production had been considerably curtailed during 1936. Production in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec decreased about 596,000 bbl., owing to labor disturbances. Crude run to stills in local refineries increased from 34,000,000 bbl. in 1936 to 36,650,000 in 1937. Exports of crude and refined products were approximately 22,700,000 bbl., or 500,000 bbl. less than in 1936. Domestic consumption, excluding ships bunkers, reached a total of 20,000,000 bbl., which shows a small increase of 200,000 bbl. over the. previous year. Domestic demand for gasoline is estimated at 3,400,000 bbl. for the year, which represents an increase of 500,000 bbl. over 1936. In all, 60 wells were completed in Mexico during 1937, as compared to 70 in 1936 and 74 in 1935. In proven areas 52 completions resulted in 25 producers and 27 failures. In the Northeastern area near the United States border, five gas wells were drilled, all of which were producers; one of them, in Camargo, came in with a daily production of 20,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. One well, resulting in a failure, was drilled in Las Uvas, Coahuila, and three wells were completed in Quebrache, to the southeast of the heavy-oil district, resulting in two small producers and one failure. TWO more wells drilled in San SebastiBn, east of the Golden Lane, were failures. Fields Northern Fields (Heavy-oil District).—A total of 11 producers and 22 failures was completed in the proven areas of the Northern fields, as compared to 16 producers and 25 failures in 1936. ALTHOUGH flotation was known to be a successful process prior to 1912, Utah Copper Co.'s ores were not entirely treated by this process until 1923. Experiments had been conducted, of course, prior to that time, and in February, 1917, the first unit of the Arthur plant was changed over from gravity concentration to flotation. On May 16, 1918, the entire Arthur plant was on flotation, excepting the coarse concentrate which was tabled prior to fine grinding. The reasons for the delay in adopting flotation at these plants were, first, that it was decided to await the outcome of the litigation with the Butte & Superior Mining Co., which began with an injunction served on Oct. 3, 1911. This litigation continued for years. Then the demands on the plants in the war years 1916, 1917 and 1918, really precluded any further drastic changes during that period, as all efforts were bent on maximum tonnage, and the cry of tonnage, rather than of recovery, was the major issue. The postwar depression followed these years of intensive production, so that it was not until 1922 that the Magna plant was equipped to use this process. Excepting, then, the amount of coarse concentrate that was tabled, 1923 was the first year when the Utah Copper Co.'s ores were on, a full flotation basis. EFFECT OF FLOTATION ON ORE RESERVES The object of this paper is to point out the effect that flotation has had on the operations of the Utah Copper Co. In 1905, when D. C. Sackling began making history in copper, the ore reserves were 34,000,000 tons, with a grade of 2 per cent. copper and a mill capacity of 700 tons daily. The point of cut-off between nonprofitable and profitable grades was 1.2 per cent. A few years later the capacity was increased to 6000 tons, when 1.1 per cent became the point of cut-off. Ore reserves had climbed to 80,000,000 tons, having a grade of 1.9 per cent. In 1911 there was an ore reserve of 300,000,000 tons, with a grade of 1.5 per cent and a cut-off of 1 per cent.; in 1918 the ore reserve was approximately 400,000,000 tons, and a grade of 1.38 per cent., and point of cut-off 0.95 per cent., based on normal costs and prices. Literally hundreds of designs of mill liners are in use in current grinding operations, varying in contour from smooth to the roughest of surfaces, and in materials from scrap rail to alloy steels. A certain amount of variation in materials can be expected, owing to differences in local market conditions and the character of ores. However, when one attempts to rationalize the designs in current operations of a parallel nature, there is little that can be called standard practice. Designs and opinions of designs are as divergent as day and night. Somewhere in this maze there must be dues to better practice. The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors for consideration in liner design, and to propose a vigorous campaign of exploration in this phase of grinding operations. The paramount considerations in the choice of mill liners for a grinding operation are: (I) durability, in view of the cost, and (2) developed grinding capacity. Because of the strategic nature of grinding circuits in controlling the production of most mining operations: grinding capacity usually is the greater consideration. Grinding Capacity Mill liners affect grinding capacity in two ways: (I) by establishing dead space within a mill shell, which could be usefully occupied by live grinding media, and (2) by controlling the grinding action of the media. The extent to which liner thickness affects the potential volume of live grinding media, and thereby the grinding capacity, is shown in Table I. In a ball mill 7 ft. in diameter, for example, an inch of liner thickness reduces ball volume and corresponding grinding capacity by 5 per cent. With grinding capacity at a premium, this makes consideration something more than first cost of liner materials. A low-cost, voluminous material, made extra thick to secure adequate life, can be very expensive in terms of grinding capacity. On the other hand, in increased grinding capacity, a long-wearing material in a thinner pattern can save many times its value. From the standpoint of mechanics, the function of mill liners is to provide the means of driving or tumbling the load of grinding media.
