This paper deals primarily with an investigation of ball-mill liners that was conducted by the writer over a period of six years at the Mammoth mill in Arizona. The investigation covered a wide variety of designs of liners in both primary and secondary mills. The comparative results are presented herein as evidence of the extent to which design influenced liner life and mill performance. Flowsheet The feed to the Mammoth mill was a complex, oxidized, gold-silver-lead-molybde-num-vanadium ore with rhyolite, andesite and granite as gangue. Although the ore varied between stopes, the long-term average in character remained substantially the same. Capacity was 560 tons per day.† Fig. I shows an abbreviated flowsheet of the grinding section of the mill. Primary Ball Mill A 3-ft. Symons shorthead crusher in open circuit crushed to 1/4-in. maximum one-way dimension the feed to the 5 by Io-ft. Marcy open-end ball mill. The mill rotated at 80 per cent of critical speed and was charged with 4-in. forged steel balls. Cast balls were used for a few months at a slight reduction in ball cost, but breakage of the large balls reduced the ball size and grinding capacity to a point where the over-all costs suffered out of proportion to the saving in cost of balls. For metallurgical reasons, the finished product of the mill was maintained at minus 8-mesh. This coarse product, plus the very abrasive ore and the absence of fines in the feed, caused abnormally rapid wear of the mill liners. The resultant high operating cost led to the most extensive phase of the investigation. In order to clarify the difference in design of the various types of liners used, Fig. a shows the profiles with the arrangement in which grinding balls of maximum size would lie on the face of the liners. The Gulf Coast area of Louisiana enjoyed a particularly active and profitable year in 1939. Fifteen new producing structures were located and approximately sixty new producing sand horizons in old fields were opened in that period of time. The most important new discoveries are the Eola field, Avoyelles Parish, and the Paradis, St. Charles Parish. The Eola strike was indicated during December 1938, but the well was not placed on production until January 1939. Eola is particularly important because it was the first discovery of oil in a commercial quantity in the Wilcox formation in that area. Sid Richardson, of Ft. Worth, Texas, drilled the first well on the Haas Investment Company's property, which encountered the producing sand at a little below 8500 ft. Within the year 48 wells were drilled, 42 being commercial producers and 6 dry holes. The second most favorable discovery was the Paradis field, which was discovered by The Texas Company's Louisiana Land and Exploration Company's Paradis No. 1 well, in St. Charles Parish, just west of New Orleans. Detailed information concerning this field has not yet been made available but it is reported that the oil sand is as much as 175 ft. thick. The initial production indicated was 1750 bbl. daily and reports suggest a very large structure. In Calcasieu Parish the Humble Oil and Refining Company's Edge-wood Land No. 1 discovered gas in the Oligocene at a total depth of 7042 ft., in the Perkins area. Although two additional dry holes have been drilled in this prospect, it is still believed to have some merit. A new discovery is credited to Cameron Parish with the finding of Miocene oil in the Superior Oil Company's State No. 1 well in Grand Lake. The Chalkley field, Cameron Parish, is credited as a 1938 discovery but was largely developed in 1939 into one of the more important new fields. During the year 13 wells were drilled, 8 being oil wells and 5 dry holes. The oil is found in the Oligocene at depths of approximately 9000 feet.

In a paper contributed by W. A. Goodyear, M.E., on "Water Gas as Fuel," read at the Boston Meeting, February, 1883,* the following statenlent was made: "The latest experiments on a scale of some magnitude in our citier, in the way of heating buildings and furnishing power for manufacturing purposes, have been by the distribution of high-presslire steam through pipes laid in the streets. Hilt these experiments (1) have not hitherto been very successful; and when we consider the high cost and (2) the great and unavoidable loss of heat and power, which always accompany the conveyance of high-pressnre steam to any considerable distance in pipes, to say nothing of (3) certain practical difficulties in the management of the pipes themselves, (4) it is evident that all such methods must eventually disappear before a system which can furnish a cheap gas of great heating power, easily distributed wherever wanted, without requiring pipes to stand pressures of 50 to 75 pounds per square inch, and (5) without keeping the whole mass of ground in the streets through which it passes hot, gratis, for a distance of ten or fifteen feet, in all directions around the pipes!' For the purpose of controverting Mr. Goodyear's statements in regard to steam-distribution in cities, I hare numbered the points made in his indictment, my principal object being, not a professional discussion of the technical and theoretical merits of steam vs. watergas, but a simple statement of facts, in regard to the present state of the street system of steam distribntion. Taking Mr. Goodyear's points in their order: 1. Concerning what he terms " These experiments," saying that they " have not hitherto been very successful," I propose to show, that the problem of stearn-distribution has passed beyond the experimental stage, and that its practical solution is highly successful. The constitution of the iron-silicon alloys containing from 14 to 33.4 weight per cent silicon has been studied by a number of investigators, whose results have been reviewed in a monograph published by the Engineering Foundation1. In these previous researches, the solubility of silicon in iron was determined by thermal, microscopic or magnetic methods and the compound Fe3Si2 was reported to be stable at temperatures from 0 to approximately 1030' C. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the solubility of silicon in iron and gives data which prove that the Fe3Si2 phase is unstable below 825" C. In order to obtain the present results on the solubility of silicon in iron, the authors have utilized the lattice constants of the alpha-phase iron-silicon alloys given in a previous publication2, and also some additional data which will subsequently be described. Materials and Methods The alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table 1. They were prepared in 30 or 50-gram ingots by melting specially purified silicon and electrolytic or carbonyl iron in alundum crucibles under a pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury. The purity of the silicon, electrolytic and carbonyl irons has been given by the authors in previous publications2, 5. The ingots were homogenized in vacuo at approximately 1000" C. for at least 96 hr. and then slowly cooled. The homogenized specimens were ground to powder in a hardened steel mortar. This powder was passed through a 150 or 200-mesh screen and sealed in evacuated quartz, Jena or Pyrex glass tubes and heat-treated as noted in the various tables. Specimens 23A, 24B, 33 and 35 and the specimens heated for one month at 700" C. were quenched by quickly removing the tubes from a horizontal tubular furnace and dropping them into water. The other specimens were quenched by means of a drop-quenching device, which has been described previously3.

The manufacture of coke in Peru, as practiced at the coalmines of the Quishuarcancha and Goyllarisquisca districts, is intermediate between the primitive coke-heap and the bee-hive oven. The method of coking is quite simple. In constructing the coal-heap, preparatory to burning, the ground is first leveled, and a simple stack of stone and clay is built, giving the bottom, to a height of 6 ft., approximately 6 ft. of external diameter. The size of the stack varies in different districts, but is generally 9 ft. high, and slightly smaller at the top than at the bottom. The walls of the heap are from 12 to 14 in. thick, which allows an inside diameter of from 3.75 to 4 ft. These walls are pierced at intervals by three or more tiers of openings or flues, connected with the central flue. The radial flues have a diameter of about 5 in. and are built with a gentle upward slope. The stack (shown in Fig. 1) is permanent; and in this respect the practice in Peru differs from other primitive practices in which nothing is permanent except the yard. Above the permanent 6-ft. portion of the stack there is added a cap of clay, about 3 ft. high, which contracts toward the top, where it has an inside diameter of about 2 ft. This clay cap is temporary, and frequently has to be renewed after each burning. Before charging the coal, there are first built, from the lowest tier of flues upon the ground, a number of temporary flues, leading from the central stack out to the edge of the coal-heap, and constructed of blocks of coal for the greater part of the distauce, the outer edge alone being of rough stoue. IN the cyanide process, gold and silver are dissolved from crushed ore as double alkali-metal cyanides, from which they may he precipitated by such positive metals as sodium (amalgam), aluminum, or zinc, or by electrolysis. Two extreme conditions may he noted. Some works, especially slime plants practising decantation, use a relatively large volume of solution-possibly 4 or 5 tons per ton of ore-nearly all of which may require precipitation, so that the solutions handled are of much lower value per ton than the ore. On the other hand, in some leaching plants it is possible to extract with very little solution, and to percolate some of this more than once through the charge before precipitation, so that the solution to be precipitated may he much less than half the weight of ore, and proportionally richer. Solution intended for further use need not have all its precious metal removed, but any that has to be thrown away should be impoverished as far as is economically possible. In spite of certain advantages possessed by other precipitants, zinc in some form has been almost universally used. In some of the first attempts to utilize cyanides as gold solvents, a "piece or plate of zinc" was suggested as a precipitant, but extension of surface was early recognized as a desideratum. Macarthur and the Forrests adopted a "metallurgical filter" of zinc shaving, turned from disks or rolled sheets. They had previously experimented on other forms of zinc, and Macarthur records having tried zinc dust, which had of course been long known as a general reducing agent. It had also been known and used as a precipitant of precious metal from plating and photographic solutions, and comminuted zinc had been patented for recovering copper, etc., from ore leaches. Other inventors proposed the virtual making of zinc powder by the attrition of balls of zinc, and by similar means, during the passage of a stream of gold-bearing solution.

The productive area of asphalt-bearing sandstone in Missouri is near the Missouri-Kansas state line near Nevada, the county seat of Vernon County about 100 miles south of Kansas City. While production thus far has been confined to Vernon and Barton counties, there are known deposits in adjacent counties. The area is served by four railroads: the Missouri Pacific, the Kansas City Southern, the Missouri-Kansas & Texas, and the St. Louis & San Francisco. The plant of the Reliance Rock Asphalt Corporation is in Vernon County, about 5 miles west of Nevada, at Ellis, a flag station on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad. A siding has been built to the plant SO that the finished product can be loaded directly into railroad cars. The property consists of a lease of 240 acres in one block. All portions of the property not required for quarrying or processing the asphalt-bearing sandstone are used for farming by the fee owner. The entire tract is very flat so that there are no transportation difficulties from quarry to plant. Geology The commercial asphalt-bearing sandstones are all of Pennsylvanian age, the major portion of the production coming from the Cherokee formation, the basal member of the Des Moines group. The Cherokee formation includes all beds between the base of the overlying Fort Scott limestone and the Mississippian limestones below. It underlies most of the area, but in the west and northwest townships of Vernon County, and elsewhere in local outliers, the Henrietta limestone, forming mounds, escarpments and high ridges, covers the Cherokee, and is in turn covered by the Pleasanton shale. In the eastern portion of the counties, the Mississippian limestones are exposed. The thickness of the Cherokee varies according to the amount that has been removed by surface erosion. Where fully present under the Henrietta; it is approximately 375 ft. thick, but over most of the county it ranges from 100 to 200 ft. thick.

The effect of stress on the creep rate of high-purity poly crystalline aluminum in the intermediate temperature range was investigated by conducting creep tests at a series of different stresses and by decreasing the stress abruptly during the course of primary and secondary creep. Three series of decreases in stress tests were conducted: the stress was decreased in primary and secondary regions of creep at 347.5°K and the stress was decrensed in primary creep at 327°K. The results demonstrate the effects of structure and temperature on the stress dependence of the creep rate. The trends in the creep rate after a drop in stress are complicated and show that recovery takes place. The experimental results were compared with Friedel's theory for cross-slip, the experimentally determined energy for a constriction being in good agreement with the theoretical estimate proposed by Stroh. PREVIOUS investigations have shown that the ap-- parent activation energy for creep of polycrystalline aluminum, over the range from about 250° to 380°K, is approximately 27,400 cal per mole,' a value that is to a first approximation insensitive to the applied stress, the creep rate, and the creep strain. Several facts strongly support the thesis that creep, in this temperature range, is controlled by the rate-determining mechanism of cross-slip: 1) Recovery of the cold-worked state can take place by a number of mechanisms prominent among which is climb and cross-slip. Astrom2 reported rapid recovery of cold-worked polycrystalline aluminum at 340° to 370°K giving an activation energy of 28,000 cal per mole and additional recovery at the higher temperatures of 455° to 478°K giving an activation energy of 36,000 cal per mole. Whereas the latter process was clearly identified with the climb mechanism, the former process. which has an activation energy in good agreement for that of creep in the same temperature range, is most likely due to recovery by thermally-activated cross-slip. 2) Single crystals of aluminum exhibit sharp slip-

HE lecture on 'Thermodynamic Properties of Blast Furnace Slagso prepared in 1959 and published two years later required revision in one particular before it appeared in print. The activity of SiO, was deter mined through studies of the equilibrium: SiO, (in slag) 2C (graphite) = (in Fe) 2C0 (1 atm) The ratio for each experimental temperature was found from the heat of formation of cris-tobalite, the entropies and heat capacities of the re-actants, by virtue of the third law of thermodynamics. Discrepancies between several kinds of data led to investigations regarding other equilibria involving SiO, on the suspicion that there might be an error in the third-law value of its free energy. In particular the equilibrium: was restudied by Kay and Taylor who Confirmed the earlier results of Baird and Tayloron which their SiO, activities depended. The free energy of Sic was also rechecked4 independently. These and other equilibrium measurements led to the conclusion6 that the free energy of SiO, at high temperatures is in error and requires a correction of about -5 kcal. The exact source of the error is uncertain; it could lie either in the entropy of SiO, or in its heat of formation, but it more probably lies in the latter. Adjustment of this free energy lowers the ratio by a factor of approximately 4. Accordingly it will be necessary to multiply by this factor all of the SiO, activities determined by this method.',B Referring to the lecture cited, this correction should be applied in Figs. 8, 9, 10, 19, and 20. It applies also to the experimental data of Fig. 13, bringing these as well as those on the ternary system into good agreement with the work of Taylor and associates. It has been proposed1'2 that, at low temperatures, point defects are a strengthening factor in inter-metallic compounds whereas, at high temperatures, the deformation is diffusion-controlled and, therefore, an increase in the concentration of point defects tends to soften or increase the plasticity of a compound. More recent investigations, including those of Bloem and Kroger' on PbS, Kramers and smith4 on TiO, and Nadeau5 on LiF, have extended this concept to ionic crystals. Rutile (TiO2) is a tetragonal transition metal oxide which has a defect structure over at least the compositional range. The defect in near-stoichiometric rutile is either an oxygen ion vacancys or a titanium ion interstitial.' This investigation does not contribute to resolving the defect question but either defect would satisfy the results obtained. Six specimens having the same orientation, see Fig., 1, utilized in an independent investigation1' were cut with a diamond saw from a single-crystal boule purchased from the Linde Co. Three specimens were annealed in air at 1200°C for 4 hr and slowly cooled to room temperature in a period of 12 hr. The remaining specimens were reduced in a vacuum of l0 mm Hg at 1200°C for 4 hr and cooled at the same rate in vacuum. The reduced specimens were weighed before and after reduction and, assuming the weight loss to be oxygen, the corresponding oxygen-to-metal ratio is 1.998. All specimens were chemically polished and etched utilizing the techniques described by Hirthe, Adsit, and Brittain." The specimens were embedded in acrylic resin and mounted on a leveling vise in a Kentron micro-hardness tester. A 200-g load was applied to a Knoop indenter with a descent time of 18 sec and a dwell time of 20 sec. Eight indentations were made on a near (171) surface, approximately 3 deg from the (lii) plane, for each orientation of the major axis of the indenter relative to the crystal structure. Heavy metal contents in stream waters, sediments, and selected aquatic algae were determined for the upper Meramec River basin, Missouri, of 3905 km2 (1508 sq mi) area and site of the proposed and controversial Meramec dam and reservoir. Six distinct drainage areas within the basin are: (1) a lightly industrialized and farm area, (2) a primitive forested- ranch area, (3) an area which includes the Northern New Lead Belt, (4) the westward drainage of an old and extensive barite mining area, (5) the main trunk of the Meramec River, and (6) short north-divide tributaries of the Meramec River. Lower Paleozoic sediments rest nonconformably upon eroded and hilly Precambrian igneous basement. This locally rises as major inliers and also makes up the St. Francois Mountains to the east. Major lead, and lesser zinc, copper, cobalt, and nickel mineralization occurs in the buried Cambrian Bonneterre dolomite. Residual barite is present along the eastern fringe of the basin and is derived from the Potosi formation. Some 62 water samples, active stream sediments (AS), bank samples (BS), and 11 selected aquatic algae samples were collected in the various drainage areas and analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel, arsenic, and mercury contents. Heavy metals in water have a maximum range of 1-120 ppb (parts per billion), and this for zinc. The AS and BS sediments have orders of magnitude greater acid leachable metal contents in the -80 mesh fraction, with lead hawing the greatest range of 11-1028 ppm. Heavy metal content of stream-algae approaches that of the sediments in which they grow. Most anomalous heavy metal accumulations occur near mining and milling activities and in the streams draining such areas. Significant distortions of the primary dispersion pattern militate against geochemical exploration for hidden ore zones, but do demonstrate the mining, milling, and smelting activities of man, and sporadic mineral occurrences in younger horizons.

This paper summarizes the results obtained from the preliminary cementing of wells in an effort to cut off the bottom water. The object of this work was two-fold: (1) To prevent the oil sand from becoming flooded. (2) To plug off bottom water, thereby preserving the individual well and reclaiming production. Valuable suggestions and help have been given by the following named: Messrs. Kyle and La Velle, of the U. 8. Bureau of Mines; Magnolia Petroleum -Co.; Freed Oil and Gas Co. The cementing work was carried out under the personal supervision of L. J. Snyder. In an unpublished paper on the "Water Problem in the Augusta Field," 5. K. Clark reaches the following conclusions: (1) That the great amount of water present is bottom water, occurring in the Varner sand, the main producing or the 2500-ft. horizon, (2) That the only striking connection between structure and water is in .the area of the marked fault on the Ralston, E. C. Varner, and F. Varner leases in sections 8, 9, 16 and 17. (3) That the oil occurs in porous streaks, generally separated by finegrained, well cemented sand, which is barren. Possibly two or three such pay streaks may be found. That under a pay, fine-grained sand occurs, which is presumably barren at the time of drilling, but soon reveals water. The writer takes partial exception to the last point, because well defined shale, slate, lime, or hard sand breaks have been encountered in a great many cases, separating the pay streaks under which water is often found. This is not an invariable occurrence, as cases have been noted when the oil has been followed immediately by water in the same stratum. In an effort to overcome the water menace, the following methods of plugging were tried: (1) Plugging with wood, lead, and limit plugs. (2) Plugging with sand pumpings.

By streaming potential techniques, the zeta potential of quartz has been measured as a function of the concentration of dodecylammonium salts at different pH values. These experiments indicate that adsorption of dodecylammonium ions takes place as individual aminium ions until a certain critical concentration is reached in the double layer, at which point the adsorbed collector ions begin to associate into patches of ions, called hemi-micelles. Because of its effect on the surface potential of quartz, pH controls the adsorption of dodecylammonium ions. The value of cooperating agents and nonionized constituents of flotation systems is discussed. A PREVIOUS investigation' of the role of pH in the flotation of quartz with anionic collectors is here extended to an inquiry of how the cationic collector, dodecylammonium acetate, is adsorbed at the quartz-solution interface. The equilibrium amount of this collector adsorbed by quartz has already been measured as a function of concentration and pH.2,3 The weight of prior evidence has suggested that two mechanisms are involved in the adsorption of this collector by quartz, but with existing adsorption measurements alone it is not possible to determine what the mechanisms are. Gaudin and Bloecher2 postulated that a polymolec-ular adsorption coating begins to form before the first monolayer has been completed. Gaudin and Morrow4 indicated that a similar situation might exist in the film of dodecylammonium ions on hematite. A study of electrokinetic potentials at the quartz-solution interface provides some detail toward a fuller understanding of the adsorption mechanism. Experimental Results The zeta potential at the quartz-solution interface was calculated from streaming potential data measured with the apparatus described in detail in a thesis by Fuerstenau5 and briefly in a paper by Gaudin and Fuerstenau.1 The quartz used in these experiments was a 48/65-mesh fraction prepared in the manner described previously.' This paper gives observations on ground movement and subsidence resulting from pillar drawing in the Lick Run section of Montour No. 10 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. adjacent to solid coal owned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Experimental mine in Snowden Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The investigation was planned by George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau, who arranged the necessary cooperation with Dr. L. E. Young, vice president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Engineers of that company placed permanent monuments on the surface to establish the boundaries of the coal owned by the Bureau and to furnish fixed points to which all levels were referred. Engineers of the Experimental mine staff then covered the ground under observation with a checkerwork of monuments made of oak pegs set into the ground at 50-ft. intervals in two directions at right angles to each other. The level of these pegs was determined first from Dec. 16 to 30, 1929; again from May 25 to June 5, 1930, and finally from July 7 to 15, 1931. Observations were then discontinued because work had been stopped temporarily in this part on Montour 10 mine. General Conditions Fig. 1 is a plan of the part of the area under observation with which this paper deals. The mine is developed on a room and pillar system known locally as half advancing and half retreating. As Nos. 35 and 36 butt entries were advanced, rooms were driven from No. 36 and drawing of the room pillars followed their completion. When the entries reached the boundary, rooms were started from No. 35 butt beginning at that point, and all remaining pillars were drawn as rapidly as possible. The rib lines of Jan. 9 and June 13, 1930, were surveyed a week to 10 days after the first and second sets of levels were run, and there was some advance in that period. In order to understand the effect of zirconium on properties of Ti-Cu-A1 alloys, Ti-Zr alloys were examined for the presence of ordering or compounds at the following compositions in weight percent: 24.1 pct Zr (lZr:GTi), 32.2 pct Zr (lZr:4Ti), 38.8 pct Zr (lZr:3Ti), 49.0 pct Zr(1Zr:ZTi). Alloys were prepared as 15-g buttons by non- consumable arc melting under argon atmosphere from Bureau of Mines titanium (Bhn 63) and Reactor Grade zirconium (Bhn 150). Weight losses during melting did not exceed 1 pct of the initial button weight. Prior to heat treatment, buttons were hot-rolled at 600" to 700°C to rods of about 6 mm diam. Contamination after hot-rolling was found to extend to a depth of less than 0.5 mm. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet, annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules, and quenched by breaking the capsules under iced brine. Annealing times were as follows: 700°C — 7 days; 600°C— 14 days; 575°C-1 and 2 months; 525°C-2 months; 500°C-2 months. Prior to heat treatment, all Ti-Zr alloys were vacuum annealed at 900°C to remove hydrogen. The reanneal of 575°C specimens for an additional month produced no observable microstructure changes. The results obtained by microstructure and X-ray diffraction are shown in Fig. 1, together with data of Hayes et al.' No other phases than a or P were found. Small amounts of retained P were detected by X-ray in the 49 pct Zr alloy. The data of the present investigation suggests that ß and a transus boundaries are at considerably lower temperatures than those of Hayes et al. The object of the present investigation was to discover a physical basis for rank differentiation of coals, particularly the coals of the Illinois basin. Vitrainl was selected as the most appropriate coal material to use in the investigation, because of its homogeneity and ease of acquisition and handling. Previous Investigations.—Hoffman and Jenker2 have shown that their index of reflection is a characteristic of coal rank and that the Leitz slit microphotometer may be used in determining the different intensities of reflection. Zhemchuzhnikov3 measured the luster of several Russian coals with a color analyzer and found that the degree of luster was indicative of rank. Luster-volatile matter curves based on data from Sucan and Donetz coals were satisfactorily used for determining the rank or volatile content of other coals after the luster strength was determined. In 1934 Fisher4 reported refractive indices of 1.76 for bituminous vitrain and 1.87 for semibituminous vitrain. Investigation of Angle of Polarization.—Early in the present investigation several determinations of the refractive indices of the vitrains were made by immersing the minus 150 plus 200-mesh powder in oils. It was found that all the samples fell within the range 1.6 to 1.8. However, difficulty was encountered in securing oils in this high index range that were closely enough spaced to separate some of the coals. The writers made a number of determinations of the angle of maximum polarization from the polished surfaces of the vitrains and derived their refractive indices by the procedure described in the following paragraphs. Johannsen5 states the fundamental concepts underlying this procedure as follows: In general, in an isotropic medium light vibrates in all directions at right angles to the direction of propagation, and when it meets with another isotropic medium at an angle, part of the light is reflected and part refracted. CONSIDERABLE experimental data has been published in recent years on a few directionally solidified aluminum base eutectic alloys. The mechanical properties of A1-Al3Ni eutectic have been studied by Lemkey, Hertzberg, and Ford1',2 and Salkind et a1.3 where the alloy has been demonstrated to behave as a whisker reinforced composite with superior properties over many aluminum alloys. The effect of lamellar structure in A1-CuA12 eutectic was compared3 to the rod-like structure in the A1-Al3Ni eutectic, and was found to be better in low cycle fatigue. This was rationalized3 by postulating that a lamellar reinforcement was more efficient at blocking lateral plastic flow than a rod-like rein-forcement. The purpose of this study is to explore eutectic strengthening in other aluminum base alloys. The Al-Pd system5 forms a eutectic with aluminum and the intermetallic compound A13Pd at 25 wt pct Pd, and has a melting point of 615°C. A13Pd has an orthorhom-bic structure and transforms to hexagonal Pd2A13 at 785°C. Growth characteristics, compression yield strength, creep rupture, and microstructural stability of directionally solidified and as-cast alloys are investigated. Eutectic ingots having a nominal composition of 25 wt pct Pd were prepared by first compacting 1/2 in. diam by a in. high pellets from 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.99 pct Pd powders. The pellets were then levitation cast into 1/4 in. diam by 2 in. long copper molds.
