Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. Steps were taken for a permanent organization of the scientific and technical employees of the Government at their mass meeting on May 8. This was the result of an informal meeting on Apr. 23 of thirty representative Government scientists and technical men who organized the preliminary committee and called the mass meeting. This subject has been widely discussed during the last year and was brought acutely to the fore by the work of the Joint Congressional Reclassification Commission, because that Commission has stated that it wished to deal with employees only through organizations. Rodney H. True of the Department of Agriculture was Acting Chairman. He pointed out that the principal advantages that were expected to be derived from such an organization were: (1) Improvement of conditions and facilities for more effective scientific and technical work; (2) adequate presentation of the needs. and results of such work to the public and to legislative and administrative officers; (3) -greater freedom in both official and non-official activities; (4) just and reasonable salaries based on service performed and the economic and social conditions which prevail; (5) greater public recognition of the aims and purposes of research; (6) advancement of science and technology as an essential element of national life. Three plans of organization were offered to the meeting, which covered the fundamental principles which could be utilized by these Government employees. The first plan would have permitted the new organization to work only through existing scientific organizations. This is the plan that scientific and technical Government employees in England have adopted and an outline of the English plan was read to the meeting.

The determination of manganese by precipitation with potassium chlorate from a solution in concentrated nitric acid, filtration through asbestos, and solution in a reducing agent whose excess is estimated, is open to the objections that the filtration and subsequent solution of the binoxide are apt to be very slow, and that the asbestos may (according to Troilius), unless perfectly purified, affect the titration. In the following modification, filtration is avoided. I give the method as I use it for Bessemer steel. In an 8-ounce Griffen beaker dissolve 1 gramme drillings in 15 c.c. nitric acid (1.2 sp. gr.). Evaporate to 5 c.c.; add 20 c.c. concentrated nitric acid and precipitate with chlorate as usual, avoiding a large excess; then add about 60 c.c. warm water, and 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution; stir until of a clear light yellow color, and titrate with permanganate while the solution is at about 80' C. The binoxide should dissolve immediately when the oxalate isadded. The titration is rapid, and the end-reaction, though transient, easily caught after a little practice. The standard solutions used are: 15 grammes crystallized ammonium oxalate to a liter, and 1.6 grarnmes potassium permanganate to a liter. For standardizing the permanganate, to 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution is added 50 c.c. of hot water, and a solution of 1 gratnme of steel in concentrated nitric acid, from which the manganese has been removed by potassium chlorate and filtration through asbestos. On an average of at least once a year there comes to the attention of the Institute Headquarters the activities of some individual who represents himself as a member of the Institute, and by a hard-luck story or other means secures loans or advances of money which are never returned. On one or two occasions the Institute has been able to secure the arrest and conviction of these frauds. Recently some individual has been operating in California and defrauded several members of the Institute. He is described as a man of 5 ft. 7 or 8 in. height, decidedly slim, and his weight is about 140 lb. His hair and mustache are gray, eyes blue or gray and he claims to be near-sighted. He is also said to have had a keen, furtive, "Hang-dog" look and claims to have been raised in Bethlehem, Pa. He speaks with a German accent. If a man answering this description presents himself before any members and claims to be a member of the Institute it will be to the good of the profession if he can be caught making fraudulent representations and placed where his ability to defraud will be under control. The most effective means of apprehending persons of this character is the very prompt notification to Institute Headquarters of any persons claiming to be members of the Institute in hard luck. If such persons are asked to supply their signature or photograph or both to be, forwarded to Institute Headquarters for identification this will serve as an excellent check on their operations. Reluctance to comply with such a request is in itself a suspicious circumstance.

THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geologists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. The Executive Committee of Marsman and Co., Inc., Managers of the Company, has kindly given permission for publication. Mr. J. B. (Fig. 1). Exploration work commenced in the spring of 1934; active development began in the fall of that year and has continued to the present date. The copper-beariug rock formations of Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, present conclusive evidences of extensive and sharp plication. Some of these evidences are here briefly stated. 1. There is a succession of approximately parallel outcrops of an altered limestone, alternating with dikes and masses of porphyry. The great copper-ore deposits are in close association with these ridges of limestone, which trend northerly and southerly and stand nearly vertical. This parallel succession is so well-defined that the management of the mines has, for convenience, recognized and named five zones, known from the chief mines, in their succession from east to west, as the " Cobre-Grande," " Veta-Grande," " Esperanza," " Capote," and " Puertocitas " belts. The intervening and separating formations are coarsely crystalline feldspar porphyries, highly basic, of light color, which may be regarded as intrusive and, in part at least, as the cause of the metamorphosed condition of the limestone. 2. These cupriferous limestone-zones are similar in constitution, are similarly charged with copper-ore (in association with quartz as a gangue, or veinstone), and are marked by similar croppiugs of gossan. 3. Distinctly folded outcrops of the surrounding strata can be observed, especially on the eastern border of the copper-bearing district north of the Democrita ground, and not far from the Veta-Grande. 4. The limestone ridge adjoining the Veta-Grande ends a short distance north of the mine, and appears to be the extretne end of a synclinal trough. 5. The Capote limestone, the most western of the croppings of the central copper-bearing area, is contiguous to stratified sandstones and quartzites, uplifted at high angles, but showing an easterly dip. Crude oil production in Iraq during 1932 was maintained at slightly higher levels than in 1931, but the output continued to be restricted to the requirements of local consumers. The Iraq Petroleum Co., representing British, American and French interests, which has been operating within its concession east of the Tigris River since 1926, began drilling operations on Apr. 5, 1927, and completed its first well at Baba Gurgur on Oct. 14, 1927, to which area the company has since confined its drilling activities. Relatively small quantities of oil have been produced annually, but the products have been utilized in company operations and have not been offered on the Iraq market. The Khanaqin Oil Co., which has its field of operation at Naft Khana in the so-called Transferred Territories, has been supplying the Iraq market with petroleum products from Iraq wells since March 12, 1927. During the 1932 fiscal year, the production was 3918 bbl. of gasoline and 2235 bbl. of kerosene, as compared with 8157 bbl. of gasoline and 6308 bbl. of kerosene during the preceding fiscal year.

Insoluble slimes are present in nearly all sylvinite ore bodies and must be removed prior to potash flotation because they adsorb excessive amounts of potash flotation reagents and cause low potash recoveries and grades. The problems associated with insoluble slimes will become more pronounced as high grade-low insol potash ores are depleted and lower grade ores containing high insols are processed. The most common commercial practice for insoluble slimes removal is mechanical desliming (hydroclassification); however, most of these desliming circuits were designed to treat sylvinite ores containing less than 4 percent insoluble slimes. As Mr. Banks mentioned in his presentation, higher insoluble slimes concentrations (>4 pct) in the mill feed overtax the mechanical desliming circuit and result in excessive brine and potash losses. Increasing the capacity of the circuit would require redesigning of the entire potash circuit and additional costly equipment. Because of mineralization and liberation properties of the high insols sylvinite deposits, the expansion of the desliming circuit may not economically maintain high potash grades and recoveries. Selective flocculation-flotation is an excellent alternative for removing insoluble slimes from potash ores. Cominco's ore, containing 4.5 to 8 percent insoluble slimes, is particularly amenable to the slimes flotation process, probably because of the absence of expanding-type clays such as montmorillonite. The overall potash recovery of 86 percent and low slime flocculant and collector dosages of 0.03 to 0.04 pound reagent per ton of feed is good evidence of the success of the process. If appreciable montmorillonite were present, the metallurgy would not be as favorable and reagent consumptions would increase significantly.

THE product obtained by roasting stibnite is likely to contain some unoxidized antimony trisulphide and a mixture of antimony trioxide and antimony tetroxide. It was desired to determine, as accurately as possible, the condition of the antimony as well as the total quantity present. Attempts were made to separate the trisulphide and the two oxides by methods based upon their varying solubilities in different solvents, but no satisfactory results were obtained in this way. It was found, however, that by determining the total antimony content, the antimony present as trioxide, and the antimony present as trisulphide, a good idea of the chemical composition of the roasted product could be obtained. The total antimony was determined by dissolving the sample in concentrated hydrochloric acid, reducing the antimony entirely to the trivalent condition by means of hydriodic acid and eventually titrating the antimony back to the pentavalent condition by means of iodine in the presence of sodium bicarbonate.' The details of the procedure are as follows: Weigh out 0.25 gram of the roasted product into a trapped flask (Fig. 1), add 4 grams of powdered tartaric acid, 2 grams of potassium iodide and 40 c.c. of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Boil the solution gently for 5 min. and then cool to room temperature by shaking the flask while holding it under running water. Then, very carefully discharge the iodine color by the cautious addition of 0.05-normal sodium thiosulphate solution, adding a little starch toward the last. Nearly neutralize the acid with ammonia solution, but leave the solution distinctly acid. Pour the slightly acid solution into 200 c.c. of water con-

The following data were collected some years since in the course of a series of experiments with oil as a substitute for coal in puddling, the earlier form of the Archer apparatus being employed. While I am not at liberty to give the name of the works at which the tests were made, I can personally warrant the accuracy of the record, and feel justified, therefore, in making this contribution to a discussion in which all trustworthy figures are likely to be helpful. Oil in Puddling. Starting with everything cold, we used 3518 pounds of oil to get the furnace in condition to charge a heat. After charging, we ran until we took out 13,340 pounds of puddled-blooms, using 8437 pounds, or 1333 gal1ons of oil. At 49 cents per gallon, the cost for oil per gross ton of blooms was $10.91; with coal at $4.871/2, and a consumption of 1.5 tons per ton of blooms (the usual quantity is ton for ton), the cost for coal is $7.31. The quantity of oil consumed in heating the furnace to the proper temperature and to make the bottom, is not included in the oil consumption stated. The quantity used was 3518 pounds of oil. Usually, the furnace need only be lighted, but in this case it had been repaired, and it was necessary to make a new .bottom. This required the quantity of oil necessary to make three heats of blooms, or 2109 pounds. Deducting this from the 3518 pounds leaves 1409 pounds of oil as the quantity consumed every week in lighting up.

THE first practical treatment of wood to prevent decay was devised early in the 19th century. At that time the oaken navy of England, when the nation was fighting for its very existence, seemed doomed to annihilation by the swift ravages of decay. The acute situation inspired a desperate search for preventive measures and resulted in the development of the Burnett, Bethel and Kyan processes for impregnating wood with zinc chloride, coal-tar creosote and mercuric chloride, respectively. In the century that has elapsed, their use has spread throughout the world and the three original preservatives are used today in enormous quantities. Meanwhile, improved processes have been developed, new preservatives discovered, and the practice of impregnating wood to make it last longer has attained a position of major importance in the field of structural materials. USE OF PRESERVATIVES BY THE RAILROADS In the application of wood preservatives in the United States the railroads have been the leaders for the past 50 years or more. Having found that decay is the chief cause of the early destruction of wood and that preservative treatment is the remedy, they have treated their ties and timber in increasing amounts(1)?-in 1925 about 220;000,000 cubic feet. By preservative treatment the Santa Fe Railroad saves annually 1,500,000 ties in its 18,000 miles of track, and many other railroads effect similar savings. (2) In like manner the life of wooden bridges and trestles,(3) poles, marine piling, water tanks and other wooden railroad structures has been greatly increased, reducing the amount of timber required annually to maintain them.(5),(7)

Directional dependence of strength and deformation properties of the Mount Waldo granite pluton in southeastern Maine is controlled by joints and microfractures whose orientations are linked to flow- induced alignment of microcline crystals. Longitudinal and cross joints which formed during cooling of the mass, as well as much younger sheeting fractures, are commonly associated with subparallel, discontinuous microfractures. The orthogonality of microfractures (open, closed; filled, unfilled; bubble planes) establishes the ease of splitting of the granite. The easiest splitting direction (rift) is subhorizontal, the second easiest direction (grain) is parallel to the cross joints, while the direction of least easy splitting (hardway) is parallel to the longitudinal joints. Static and dynamic measurements made in the field and laboratory established that structural features are responsible for the marked stiffness anisotropy of the granite. In the central part of the pluton the static Young's modulus in the north-south direction averages 31.1 GPa, and 20.9 GPa in the east-west direction; the stiffer direction being parallel to the long C-axes of microcline phenocrysts and microfractures as identified in outcrop, core samples, and thin sections. Vertical downhole sonic measurements of dynamic moduli ranging from 2.5 to 16.2 GPa appeared to be anomalously low when compared to the static horizontal values. However, the field sonic values were confirmed by laboratory sonic pulse testing of oriented cores. The field results reflected closely spaced layers of open horizontal microfractures. Those deformation and strength properties that are closely tied to bubble planes, filled microfractures, and microcline orientation could be extrapolated to greater depths with good hope of success.

The ores received at the Washoe Smelter come almost entirely from the mines in Butte and contain the following minerals : Chalcocite, Cu2S; covellite, CuS; chalcopyrite, CuFeS2, (trace); bornite, Cu3FeS3; enargite, Cu3AsS4; malachite, Cu2CO4 + H2O (trace); pyrite, FeS2; sphalerite, ZnS; rhodo-chrosite, MnCO3, (less than 1 per cent.); rhodonite, MnSiO3, (less than I per cent.). The country-rock of Butte is of the granite family and is a quartz-monzonite containing a little less silica than typical granite. It is made up of the following rock-minerals in approximately the proportions indicated: Minerals. Composition. Per Cent. The flow stress of a series of Ni-Cr-A1 alloys consisting of a dispersion of y' (based on Ni3Al) in a rnatrix of nickel-base solid solution y has been measured at temperatures up to 950°C as a fwzction of the volume fraction of y'. At high temperatures the flow stress is controlled by the amount of Y' in the alloy, i.e., the higher the volume fraction of y', the greater is the flow stress. This simple relationship is not obeyed at low temperatures in so far as a peak in the flow stress-volume fraction relation occurs at about 25 pct y'. The variation in the mechanical properlies of these alloys as a function of both temperature and volume fraction of y' has been correlated with changes in distribution of both the dislocations and y'. The results are interpreted on the basis that at low temperatures the y matrix is strengthened significantly bv the presence of a hyperfine y' precipitate due to decomposition on cooling; at high temperatures the y matrix is a single phase of low strength. It is clearly recognized that the high temperature strength of most nickel-base superalloys depends upon a dispersion of the ordered fcc phase y', based on Ni3A1, in a fcc solid solution matrix y based on nickel. Although the volume fraction of y' varies widely from about 0.2 in Nimonic 80A to about 0.6 in Mar-M200, all such nickel-base alloys manifest an unusual insensi-tivity of the flow stress with respect to temperature. In Mar-M200 for example, the 0.2 pct flow stress remains essentially constant from room temperature to 750°C. The conclusion has been drawn1 that the characteristically low temperature dependence of the flow stress of y-y' nickel-base alloys is obtained when the state of dispersion of y' is such that dislocations are forced to cut through the y' particles at the onset of yielding. When the spacing between the y' particles is so large that the flow stress is controlled by dislocation bowing between particles, then the initial flow stress decreases progressively with an increase in temperature at a rate determined by changes in elastic properties. The same conclusion is inherent in the detailed, mechanistic model of the deformation process in commercial superalloys which has been developed by Copley and ear' in which the temperature independent flow stress is attributed primarily to the contribution of the antiphase boundary energy created in the y' particles during deformation. In this theory the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is a reflection of the constant antiphase boundary energy as a function of temperature. An important microstructural parameter that is relevant to the explanations that have been suggested' to account for the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is the volume fraction of y'. To vary the latter to any significant extent in a given commercial alloy is clearly difficult. However, it is possible in a relatively simple Ni-Al-Cr ternary system which manifests analogous microstructures in terms of the distribution of y' in y and contains specific alloys which have flow properties that depend on temperature in a manner quite similar to their more complex commercial counterparts. Hornbogen et . have studied precipitation phenomena and deformation mechanisms in such alloys but only where the y' volume fraction was small (less than 0.2) and the y' particle size varied from less than 100A up to a maximum of -1000A. In the present study, a series of alloys was prepared in which the volume percent of y' at 900°C was varied from 0 to 100 pct with the y' particle size (of the order 0.5 p) comparable to the sizes obtained in commercial superalloys. Particular attention has been given to the relationship between variations in the volume fraction and distribution of y' and the temperature dependence of the flow stress EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-Cr-Al system was selected because it is well characterized, bears a close relationship to commercial alloys, and offers the advantage of an extra degree of freedom over a binary system. In the present investigation, a series of alloys across the tie line between NisA1 and Ni3Cr (Ni3Cr is not an in-termetallic compound, the nomenclature is only used to designate the composition) were vacuum cast. The pseudobinary6 and the composition of the alloys used are shown in Fig. 1. It is important to note that the compositions of the y phase and the y' phase in the two-phase alloys was always the same. Alloy compositions were selected from the binary diagram, Fig. 1, in order that aging at 900°C would produce from 0 (100 pct y) to 100 pct y' by volume percent. (The size of the y' particles produced during the equilibrium aging treatment increased as the volume fraction of y' increased, ranging from about 0.2 p at low volume fractions up to about 0.8 p at the highest volume fraction.) The y' phase is based on the inter-metallic compound Ni,A1 which has the fcc LIZ type superlattice structure, and chromium substitutes for aluminum in the structure. The y phase is a disordered fcc solid solution. The alloys were heat treated at 1150°C for 2 hr, air cooled to room temperature, and finally annealed for 16 hr at 900°C. The rods were then centerless ground to 0.25 in. diam and cut into compression samples 0.5 in. long. The compression tests were made on an In-stron machine at a strain rate of 7 x 10"4 sec-'. A rapid heating radiant heat furnace was used which minimized the heating and temperature stabilization time to 10 min for the highest testing temperature. All the tests were stopped after 5 pct plastic strain.

R. E. Hoffman and D. Turnbull—The authors have presented evidence which they have interpreted as indicating that the rate of self diffusion is not intrinsically more rapid at grain boundaries than within the grain. Grain-size effects which apparently exist are attributed rather to impurities concentrated at the grain boundaries. In view of our own experiments and the existing evidence, we believe that the support for this hypothesis is not convincing. We have in progress an investigation in which the rate of self diffusion of silver is being measured over an extended temperature range in both single-crystal and polycrystalline specimens. The results of the single-crystal experiments and some preliminary data on fine-grained polycrystalline specimens have already been reported:' and it is anticipated that a complete report will be published in the near future. The self-diffusion coefficient of large-grained polycrystalline silver (1 grain per sq mm) has previously been measured by Johnson" between 730" and 940°C. The diffusion coefficients which we have measured in single crystals (210 plane normal to diffusion direction) agree within experimental error with values calculated from an extrapolation of Johnson's curve down to temperatures as low as 500 °C. However, it has been demonstrated that the overall self-diffusion rate in fine-grained polycrystalline specimens (initial grain size of 0.003 cm) becomes measurably larger than the overall rate in a single crystal at a temperature of 600°C, and the discrepancy between the two rates becomes greater as the temperature is further decreased. In fact, it has been possible to obtain satisfactory penetration curves for polycrystalline specimens using the sectioning technique at temperatures as low as 400°C. At this temperature, the penetration is 50 to 100 times greater in the polycrystalline specimens than in a single crystal. Fisher" has developed an analysis whereby the ratio of the rate of the unit diffusion process at the grain boundary to the corresponding rate within the grain can be calculated from the penetration curves and an assumption as to the width of a grain boundary. This analysis applied to our data indicates that the unit process at the grain boundary is faster by a factor of 10' at 475°C when the grain boundary width is taken to be 5. The silver used in most of these experiments was obtained from the Handy and Harmon Co. and listed as 99.97 pct pure. Preliminary experiments on 99.999 pct silver from the Jarrel-Asch Co. indicate a grain-size effect of the same order of magnitude as in the less pure silver. Nominally, these purities are as good, at least, as that of the carbonyl iron used by the authors, but of course if an impurity effect does exist its magnitude might be very dependent upon the nature of both major and minor constituents. The authors have cited the work of other investigators who have found no grain-size effects. Neither Steigman, Shockley and Nix" nor Maier and Nelson8 were able to correlate self-diffusion coefficients of copper with grain size. However, all their measurements were performed at or above 750°C; and on the basis of our work with silver, no grain-size effect would be expected at temperatures above about 0.7 of the absolute melting temperature unless the grain size were exceedingly small. Likewise, in the investigation of the self diffusion of lead by Seith and Keil,14 the lowest temperature at which the diffusion coefficient was measured in polycrystalline specimens was 207°C, which is still sufficiently high so that the lack of a grain-size effect is not surprising. Finally, in those experiments on iron from which they concluded that there was no grain size effect, Drs. Birchenall and Mehl seem to have no information as to the actual grain sizes immediately prior to and following the diffusion anneal. Without this information, we believe that their own experiments offer little support for their hypothesis. F. S. Buffington, I. D. Bakalar, and M. Cohen—The results given in this paper agree in order of magnitude with those tentatively reported by us.27 However, significant differences exist in the two sets of data, and it may be well to make an explicit comparison. The diffusion studies at M.I.T. were conducted on somewhat higher purity iron (99.98 pct Fe) than the grades used by the authors, but this is undoubtedly not the answer. Fig. 4 shows the diffusion results of both laboratories for the gamma phase, omitting the authors' data on the commercial steels, while fig. 5 presents a similar comparison for the alpha phase. The divergence is much more marked in the latter case than in the former. In connection with the M.I.T. determinations, all of the runs in the gamma range and those above 800 °C in the alpha range were conducted with specimens having a relatively thick (0.002 cm) electrodeposit of radioactive iron. This practice minimizes any possible error due to extraneous diffusion that may occur during the heating to and cooling from the operating temperature. An exact solution of Fick's law for these boundary conditions was used in calculating the diffusion coefficients. At a later time, three runs were made below 800°C, using very thin electrodeposits similar to those of the authors, and the points fell considerably below the values expected from the extrapolation of the results based on the specimens with the thick deposits (compare dash-dot line in fig. 5). However, in the runs with the thin deposits, deviations of 100 pct were found between the individual specimens, whereas the maximum deviation with the thick deposits was less than 25 pct. Accordingly, it is not known at the moment whether the M.I.T. points below 800 °C should be given as much weight as those above 800°C. If this were done, the frequency factor would be of the order of 400 cm2 per sec, which is quite high. In other metals, the frequency factor for self diffusion lies between about 0.1 and 10 cm2 per sec. As the points below

Nowhere can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, and as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone. Important Factors The several important factors that have been responsible for this change are : 1. Shrinkage of the iron business in the South. 2. Increased labor cost. 3. The development of the South, with an industrial trend, without a substantial increase of its own iron-consuming market. 4. Increased freight rates, which has narrowed the market that might be reached from this district. 5. Depletion of the better grades of raw materials, both ore and coal. AN extended program devoted to the development of a matrix for holding diamonds of a size and. kind not heretofore generally used is being carried on by the Carboloy Company, and this paper describes the part of the development that affects mining and its allied industries. Labora-tory and field work so far has indicated the following: 1. Tungsten carbide and cobalt form the most desirable known matrix material for the holding of diamonds for drilling work. 2. Industrial bort diamonds in sizes and of a class not generally heretofore acceptable and therefore less expensive can be successfully held in this cemented carbide matrix. 3. In exploratory drilling, the combination of bort diamonds, impreg-nated throughout a matrix of tungsten carbide and cobalt, when fabri-cated onto drilling crowns, is an indicated economic substitute for drilling crowns in which the diamonds are set by hand, mechanically or by casting. 4. This impregnated type of drilling crown or bit has definite possi-bilites of revolutionizing the drilling of blast holes, particularly in the harder formations. This will be brought about by the development of high-speed light-weight rotary equipment using an impregnated diamond bit to replace the percussion drill now in general use. (The development of this rotary equipment is well past the laboratory stage at this time.) 5. That the use of a rotary bit is a preventive measure in the fight against silicosis. The development of this product was started by G. F. Taylor at the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Co. It was early recog-nized that it had possibilities in the drilling field and the present product is the result of considerable experimental work with other powdered metals as well as with tungsten carbide and cobalt.

The Ray Consolidated Copper Co.'s mining property is located on Mineral Creek, 6 miles north of Kelvin, at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz. (Fig. 1). The mining claims now owned by the company consist of 126 lode claims, comprising 2,144.9 acres, containing at the beginning of operations 82,904,368 tons of 2.19 per cent. copper ore. General Characteristics of the Orebody The main orebody is a disseminated deposit in schist and porphyry formed by secondary enrichment. Its existence was proved by churn drilling, and it is at present one of the largest proved copper deposits in the world. The orebody itself covers 205 acres with an average thickness of 121 ft., and occupies a definite belt which has a northwest direction. Its length is approximately 5,000 ft. The width varies, being about 2,000 ft. at the west end and 2,500 ft. at the east, narrowing down irregularly from both ends to a few feet in the center. The thickness of the body varies greatly along the line of lode, ranging from a few feet up to 470 ft. thick. The ore horizon is not constant, but varies, following in a broad sense the topography. The body in general dips slightly to the northeast, and is broken up by numerous small faults and fractures. The ore-bearing formations, consisting of mineralized schist and mineralized granite porphyry, stand fairly well and offer no difficulty in mining operations. The bulk of the ore is chalcocite disseminated in schist. In places cupriferous pyrite is closely associated with the chalcocite. The mineralized gr'anite-porphyry forhations are contiguous to the ore-bearing schist. • Overlying the orebody is an oxidized zone of leached iron-stained schist, averaging 252 ft. in thickness, termed "capping." There are few industries in which power is more important to successful operation than mining, and none in which it is so difficult to ohtain power cheaply. Fuel is usually expeusive in mining districts, ana the ma chinery may be widely scattered and located in places difficult of access. The work is often so intermittent and variable as to prevent the economical use of steam. Mining operations are likely to exhibit accumulations of comparatively small and inefficient engines, numerous boilers and long lines of wasteful steam-pipes. Conlpressed air, as a means of transmitting power, is so handicapped by losses in the compressors and piping that it is limited to short distances and to the operation of apparatus requiring power, without regard to cost. To-day, electricity is rapidly replacing other methods of power-distribution, primarily because it is practically independent of distance. By selecting a potential proportional to the length of transmission, the cost of electric conductors and the e5ciency are the same for all distances within reasonable limits. For instance, a given amount of power can be delivered either 528 ft. away at 100 volts, or 50 miles at 50,000 volts, with the same total of copper per H.P. and with exactly the same loss of power in the transmissioo-circuk. This independence of distance permits the selection of the place most advantageous for power-development as a site for an electric power-plant, and the co~~centration there of the generation of all the power required within a radius of many miles. The powel.-site may be at a fall of water, if one is available, or a steam-plant can be built where fuel and supplies are cheapest, or where suflicient water is available for boiler-feed and condensing purposes.

I. LOCATION. THE Mojave mining district is situated in a group of small hills centering around Soledad peak, in the Mojave desert, Kern county, Cal. These hills are about 4.5 miles SSW. of Mojave, a railroad town at the junction of the Santa Fé and Southern Pacific railroads. The town of Mojave is about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, to which it is connected both by telegraph and by rail. The distance on the Southern Pacific railroad is 102 miles, covered in 3 hr. and 45 min. by express train. A sketch-map of this region is shown in Fig. 1. The Mojave district is relatively isolated. The only other mining towns in this section of California are Randsburg and Johannesburg, in a district (containing the well-known Yellow Aster mine) at the northern end of a low ridge of hills, which begins about 20 miles NE. of Mojave, runs nearly N. for 35 miles, and varies in width between 3 and 6 miles. As will be seen later, the origin and formation of these hills are not the same as those of Soledad peak. II. CLIMATE AND VEGETATION. The climate and vegetation of the Mojave district are typical of the arid regions of the southwestern United States. During the winter and spring there is some rainfall, and the tempera-ture is generally from 60° to 70° F. in the day-time. The rainfall in the spring is often very considerable for short spaces of time, and cloud-bursts are not infrequent. In summer there is continual sunshine, with temperatures, as a rule, exceeding 100° F. in the day-time, while 115° F. in the shade of a house is not at all unusual; but at night the temperature falls considerably.
