THE PROCESSES USED FOR THE rolling of zinc are not novel or unique in a mechanical sense. There has not been so widespread a tendency toward heavy slabs and mechanical handling, and toward 3-high and continuous mills as has taken place with steel and with some of the other nonferrous metals. Those respects in which the rolling of zinc differs from the rolling of other metals center around two facts. First, the hexagonal zinc crystal has only one plane of easy slip: namely, the basal plane. Fortunately, however, the crystal twins readily on any of the pyramidal planes, thereby creating new basal planes favorably oriented for relief of the stress which has caused twinning. Second, the recrystallization temperature of zinc is little above room temperature and for very pure grades of zinc may in fact, be at room temperature for severely strained material. The practical effect of these two characteristics of zinc will become evident in the later discussion. First, it is necessary to give some attention to the melting and casting of billets for rolling. Reverberatory furnaces are commonly used for melting. These vary over a wide range of capacity from as low as 5 tons to 100 tons or over. Low-frequency electric furnaces have also been used with satisfactory results. Arc Furnaces are, of course unsuited to a low-melting and lute-boiling metal, such as zinc. To minimize oxidation and volatilization losses in the furnace, the temperature should be kept below 500°C. With this temperature in the melting furnace, a suitable pouring temperature in the neighborhood of 460°C can he maintained at the mold when a transfer ladle is used for pouring.

In order to conduct intelligently the sampling of copper of various forms and grades, solid or in molten furnace-charges, a knowledge of this subject is essential. Yet figures and tests have been persistently withheld from publication, and the books at our command give us little or no information in this regard. This gap in our copper-literature has led to a series of experiments, the results of which are given below. Nearly all gold- and silver-bearing copper, destined for shipment, is cast into the form of bars or pigs. For the sampler, the question arises, Does copper, so cast, remain homogeneous ? If it does, sampling should present no difficulties; but, from experience, we know that this is not the case, and we are thus led to study the behavior of the precious metals arid impurities in copper when the latter changes from the molten to the solid state. For the purpose of the experiments here described, all available grades of copper were selected, and all of them mere subjected to the same conditions, an important requisite for proper comparison. The molten copper obtained directly from reverberatory- and blast-furnaces was cast in a cast-iron mould, the sides and bottom of which were 1 inch thick, and would, therefore, give the copper a fair length of time to chill. The inside dimensions of the mould, and, consequently, of the block of copper obtained, were: length, 10 inches; width, 9 inches; and depth, 5 inches. A method is presented that provides a mathematical description of capillary pressure curves and, probably, of differences in pore geometry of samples. The technique is based on the observation that the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve reflect characteristics of the pore structure of the sample. INTRODUCTION It has been noted1-5 that the observed differences in shape and location of capillary pressure curves reflect some basic properties regarding the pore geometry of the samples. For example, according to basic concepts of capillarity, the following statements can be made regarding the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve.* The location of the curve with respect to the (Vb)pc and PC axes is a measure of the interconnected pore volume and of the cross-sectional area of the pore first entered by mercury, respectively. The shape of the curve depends on the interconnection of the pores and the sorting of the pore sizes. It has been the object of this study to use this information as a starting point in an attempt to find a unique mathematical description of the PC — (Vv)p, relations of different samples. It may be expected that parameters in such a relation can then be used to describe differences in pore geometry of these samples. For a practical description of the PC — (Vb)p, relation, however, it appears desirable to describe each curve (i.e., each sample) by a limited number of parameters so that the curves taken from all samples form a family, each member of which is uniquely determined by one single combination of values of all parameters.

THE instrument about to be described meets so perfectly the special needs of the metal microscopist that there seems to be little doubt but its merits must be readily appreciated by those who have had any experience in the microscopical examination of metals. The Microscope-Stand.-The microscope-stand proper, Fig. 1, consists of a microscope-tube, provided with both coarse and fine adjustments of the best construction, and with a draw-tube, rigidly mounted on a bar supported at both ends on substantial and firm cast-iron legs. The height between the table and the under side of the supporting bar is 5 in. and the distance between the supporting legs 12 inches. This arrangement' affords free space below the objective for the examination of large specimens of metals, such as full rail-sections, without detracting in the least from the value of the instrument when applied to the examination of the usual small specimen, as explained later. Many metal microscopists frequently have to examine bulky specimens, and this is altogether impossible with the ordinary microscopes as well as with the special metallurgical microscopes which have been designed and described from time to time. Recourse must be had to all sorts of makeshifts for the proper support of large specimens, or, more often, the microscopist gives up the attempt altogether, or else resigns himself to the cutting of the bulky samples into small pieces to -be laboriously polished and separately examined. CHARACTERIZING the annual meeting as the biggest and best one yet has happened so repeatedly that some may suspect it has become a conventional phrase, like "good morning," and yet, what else can be said when not only one but all the many who express an, opinion use exactly those words, while the first of the two adjectives refers to a physical fact that is established by count. Perhaps there were hose who thought it not the best, but if so they were too tactful to say it out loud. So without further ado . let us admit that the one hundred and thirty-ninth general meeting of the A. I. M. E. held; as our By-laws provide, in New York during the third week of February, was the biggest and best of them all. Perhaps it is because we appreciate friendliness more as we grow older, but somehow the friendly atmosphere seems to rise slowly in temperature with the passing of the years. The actual atmosphere on the opening morning was quite the contrary, Feb. 17 being the coldest clay, so far, of this winter, and the suburbanites claimed that their thermometers had registered 5" below zero when they got up, though the official records of the weather man did not go that low. From that time the temperature steadily rose until Thursday afternoon, when the official record of 66" constituted a record high for Feb. 20 at New York. The weather man explained it by learned discussion of highs and lows, but we suspect the A.I. M. E. members must have had something to do with it.

The desirability of bringing about greater uniformity in specifications governing iron and steel is generally recognized, and has found expression within recent years, in the efforts of numerous technical societies in that direction. When the International Association for Testing Materials was organized at Zurich in 1895, a committee was appointed, charged as follows: " On the basis of existing specifications, to seek methods and means for the introduction of international specifications for testing and inspecting iron and steel of all kinds." The American representation on this international committee consisted originally of five, and now of eight members. In view of the magnitude and importance of the subject, the Executive Committee of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, since incorporated as the American Society for Testing Materials, appointed a committee of 34 members, including the American members of the above-named international committee, to frame standard American specifications for iron and steel. This committee reported on specifications for (1) Structural Steel for ridges and Ships; (2) Structural Steel for Buildings; (3) Open-Hearth Boiler-Plate and Rivet-Steel; (4) Steel Rails; (5) Steel Splice-Bars; (6) Steel Axles; (7) Steel Tires; (8) Steel Forgings; (9) Steel Castings ; (10) Wrought-Iron. These specifications were designed to be fairly representa-tive of the best current American practice, and were adopted by letter-ballot of the Society in August, 1901. The leading engineering societies have participated at various times in the discussion of these specifications and have lent valuable assistance through the appointment of special committees on like, or closely related, subjects. The co-operation of the members of the Institute is earnestly sought by the Committee on Nominations, recently appointed by the Board of . Directors, in its work of formulating a ticket for officers and places falling vacant in the Board of Directors in February, 1916. The Committee must present the official ticket of nominations to the Board of Directors at its October meeting. UNLIKE its sister elements, columbium (niobium) and tantalum, vanadium has not been available until recently in fabricated form. While Vanadium Corporation of America has offered the metal in fairly pure form for sale for many years in small lots for research purposes, this grade of vanadium has been brittle, probably because of a high oxygen content. Hence, when in 1950 the announcement1 was made that wrought vanadium was available as a commercial material, this represented a large step forward in the metallurgy of vanadium. While vanadium is generally regarded as a rare metal, data on its occurrence in the earth's crust show it to be as abundant as copper, zinc, and lead combined. Vanadium is widely distributed, but it does not seem to occur in massive deposits except in a few localities, principally in Colorado, Utah, and Arizona, where it is found in sandstone formations, and in Mina Ragra, Peru. Only in Colorado or Peru are ores mined solely for the vanadium content. Ores in the United States are principally carnotite and roscoelite; the former is of particular interest because of its uranium content. It is a uranium-potassium vanadate containing approximately 52 pct of UO2 and 18 pct of V2O5. Production in the United States during the war years averaged around 2000 tons a year, but dropped to 636 tons in 1946. In recent years, ferrovanadium has been selling for about $2.80 per pound of contained vanadium. This suggests that the price of the pure metal will never be as low as $2.80 per pound, but it could

The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids. THE purpose of this note is to present evidence that vacancies, which have been produced by quenching from a high temperature, alter the rate of strain-hardening of an hep single crystal. The majority of investigations of the effects of quenched-in vacancies on the yield stress of metals have been made using fee samples in the form of thin wires. However, there is an inherent disadvantage in using such wires to study the effects of vacancies on the rate of strain-hardening of metals because fee wires begin stage II slip either immediately upon yielding or very shortly thereafter. When stage II slip occurs, very rapid strain hardening also occurs, masking the effects of vacancies on the rate of hardening. In this investigation single crystals of magnesium hep were studied since magnesium has only one slip plane at low temperatures and has, therefore, an extensive easy glide region. In addition, the effect of both static and dynamic recovery on the rate of hardening were eliminated by testing in liquid nitrogen. Both forms of recovery occur in hep metals by dislocation climb, which is a diffusion controlled mechanism and is negligible at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Finally, the dependence of the strain-hardening rate on the crystal orientation was eliminated by using the equations of Schmid and Boas.' Variations in the strain-hardening rate could, therefore, be attributed to the presence of vacancies. THE first practical treatment of wood to prevent decay was devised early in the 19th century. At that time the oaken navy of England, when . the nation was fighting for its very existence, seemed doomed to annihilation by the swift ravages of decay. The acute situation inspired a desperate search for preventive measures and resulted in the development of the Burnett, Bethel and Kyan processes for impregnating wood with zinc chloride, coal-tar creosote and mercuric chloride, respectively. In the century that has elapsed, their use has spread throughout the world and the three original preservatives are used today in enormous quantities. Meanwhile, improved processes have been developed, new preservatives discovered, and the practice of impregnating wood to make it last longer has attained a position of major importance in the field of structural materials. USE OF PRESERVATIVES BY- THE RAILROADS In the application of wood preservatives in the United States the railroads have been the leaders for the past 50 years or more.. Having found, that decay is the chief cause of the early destruction of wood and that preservative treatment is the remedy, they have treated their ties and timber in increasing amounts(1) ?-in 1925 about 220,000,000 cubic feet. By preservative treatment the Santa Fe Railroad saves annually 1,500,000 ties in its 18,000 miles of track, and many other railroads effect similar savings. (2) In like manner the life of wooden bridges and trestles,(3) poles, marine piling, water tanks and other wooden railroad structures has been greatly increased, reducing the amount of timber required annually to maintain them.(5),(7)

AT the New York meeting of the Institute, April, 1907, I presented a paper entitled, The Formation and Enrichment of Ore-Bearing Veins,1 in which paper I advanced the following propositions (1) That the majority of mineralized veins are the product of expiring vulcanism ; (2) that most of these veins were primarily mineralized by comparatively rich solutions in comparatively short periods of time; (3) that the solutions gained their metal-values from a comparatively rich source; (4) that there is a barysphere containing large amounts of the useful metals; (5) that eruptions spring from various depths and bring various kinds of magmas towards the surface; and (6) that only those eruptions which disturb the barysphere and bring a magma rich in metals sufficiently near the surface to be leached by vein-making solutions are productive of valuable ore-deposits, other eruptions producing barren veins. Ore-deposits due to magmatic segregation were not included in this general survey. As a result of considerable further study I have modified my views in some respects, while in others I feel more sure than ever of the ground taken at that time. That ore-bodies are infrequent occurrences and born of extraordinary conditions I think is now generally accepted. The theory that persisted for a time-namely, that ore-bodies were formed by the ordinary ground-water, which consists of extremely dilute solutions, derived from leaching extremely lean surface-rocks, and which must occupy enormously long periods of time in concentrating the values so leached, is, I think, now pretty generally regarded as not applicable to the great majority

My previous paper is entitled, The Laws of Igneous Ernanation Pressure. The present paper lays no claim to the exactitude and completeness of a law, since it is of a provisional nature and may be disregarded when experiments have established a basis for more exact reasoning. The general physical states in which aqueous emanations may occur are first considered. The possible physical couditions under which the mineral elements may occur in emanations are then discussed, and a classification of deposits, dependent on emanation, is proposed. A system of scientific experimental investigation is outlined, and it is shown that the physical and chemical properties of emanation may be exactly determined thereby. The investigation is urged as feasible and simple, and not necessarily requiring large and costly apparatus. It is the only step necessary to make possible the formulation of a complete set of laws of igneous emanation. Process of Emanation. In a rising column, magma ranges in temperature from 900° to 1,200°C. Exhalation must begin at some fairly great depth. What this depth may be we can only surmise, since no experimental evidence is available. Exhalation, however, continues as the magma flows upward, until at another level the occluded gases have all escaped. This depth is probably upward of 5,000 ft. (See Fig. 1.) All exhalations must come from between these two levels. As the whole emanation is the sum of the exhalations and residues, the residues must come from below the uppermost level. They will be most abundant when coming from those parts of the intrusion which have solidified below the lower level.

The purpose of this paper is to review the more important developments in the production of petroleum during 1930 in Texas, excluding the Panhandle and Gulf Coast districts, giving emphasis to trends rather than to statistics. Outstanding Developments Aside from increasing curtailment of drilling operations and general prorating of production by state authority the most noteworthy developments for the year appear to have been: 1. Demonstrations of the fictitiousness of potentials as shown first by Darst Creek pool, rated at 180,000 bbl. and having actually 78,000 bbl. daily, and especially by the Hendricks pool of Winkler County, with potential of about 1,000,000 bbl. daily in mid-year and production of only 52,000 bbl. daily when opened to continuous full production in December. 2. Rapid development of the Darst Creek pool under competitive drilling. 3. Orderly and highly successful development of the Van pool under unit operation. 4. Failure of several highly rated structures southwest and northeast of Van. 5. Extension of the deep Simpson production at Big Lake and increased interest in these pre-Mississippian pays in North Central Texas and West Texas. 6. Discovery of prolific wells in northwest Rusk County from sands of Upper Cretaceous age, portending a rapid and extensive development campaign around the northwest margin of the Sabine uplift. North Central Texas It appears logical to discuss the new developments by districts as set out by the American Petroleum Institute, but North Texas and West Central Texas districts will be treated together. The year 1927 witnessed numerous developments of significance in California. The State's shut-in production increased from an average of 58,000 bbl. daily in January to a maximum of 93,000 bbl. daily in August, and a total of about 25,000,000 bbl. was withheld from the market during the year. This not only lessened the effect of large production at Hunt-ington Beach, Seal Beach and Alamitos Heights, but also was a most effective conservation move. Since 1922, it is estimated that approximately 100,000,000 bbl. of oil that would otherwise have been produced have been held in the ground. I. Outstanding Field Developments of 19271 1. Crude Production The most important factor in new crude production in 1927 was the Seal Reach field with its adjacent Alamitos Heights townlot area. Production increased from about 10,000 bbl. daily in January, to a peak of 66,000 bbl. in June. Huntington Beach finished the year 1926 with a production of 102,000 bbl. daily, which declined to 60,000 bbl. by the end of 1927. Due to production in these three areas and the tempering effect of shutting in numerous wells, the California production curve for 1927 was held at a fairly even level. During the two years in which the new reduction-works of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. have been in operation at Douglas, Ariz., there has developed a remarkable condition in regard to the corrosive action of the water used to cool the jackets of the blast-furnaces. Were it not for the many contradictory features, it might pass as one of the unavoidable troubles due to the composition of the water. This water, obtained from wells 600 ft. deep, is also used in the steam-boilers, and its composition, as shown by the following analysis, does not indicate the presence of any ingredient which would explain the corrosion: Grains Per U. Sodium and potassium sulphates,..14.850 Sodium and potassium chlorides,.9.732 Sodium and potassium carbonate, . 6.482 32.409 The jackets are made of inner plates 0.5 in. thick and an outer plate # in. thick, with 3/8-in. stiffeners between the inner and outer plates. In from 10 to 12 months the inner plates have been reduced by corrosion to a thickness of from + to & in., while the outer plate in the same time is reduced by less than 1/16 in., and the stiffeners show very little corrosion. The plates are pitted and eaten away in some places more than in others. There is practically no scale found on the jackets, but when cleaned considerable iron oxide is found in the bottoms. THE separation of hematite by hysteretic repulsion was first brought to the attention of the public in 1922, by W. M. Mordey1. Three years later another paper2 was published and after another four years a third paper3 appeared in the South African publications. Certain data were lacking in these papers. In order to continue the work intelligently a knowledge of the shapes of the hysteresis curves for certain minerals was very necessary. This information was not available until the present year4. It was known that reduction of certain ores rendered them amenable to this process of separation but definite data in the form of curves showing exactly the effect of such treatment were lacking. Prob-ably our best source of information on the separation of minerals by the use of alternating-current magnetic fields today is the reports from the U. S. Bureau of Mines 5-7. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the reader in detail how to make a commercial separator. Experimental models have recently been made 7 and the results obtained have been so good that it is the opinion of the authors that the public will soon take an active interest in the subject and its development. The writers have constructed a separator that is considerably different in construction and operation from the two types described by Mr. Davis. This will be described, but the real purpose of this paper is to outline certain experiments and give curves showing data that have a fundamental bearing upon the practical construction of a separator of this type.

Prealloyed powders of nickel-base superalloys were sintered to almost theoretical density in short sinterilzg times. It was ascertained that the rapid densification was caused by a small amount of liquid phase at the grain boundaries, which apparently ovriginated by incipient melting at temperatures considerably below those at which macroscopic melting of the compacts occurred. An increase in the quantity of liquid phase present during sintering-, caused by an increase in the sintering temperature, increased the densification rate, but resulted in a decrease in the room temperature tensile propevties. NICKEL-base superalloys, which presently comprise an important group of high temperature alloys, are difficult to fabricate by the forging, casting, and machining operations presently used. As it was felt that fabrication by powder metallurgical techniques might offer advantages in the production of super-alloy parts, a basic investigation of the most important process in the sequence of powder metallurgical operations, the sintering process, was undertaken on Rene 41, Udirnet 500, and Nimonic 90 and 100 powders. These alloys age harden by the precipitation of the ? Ni, rA1,Ti) phase. Nickel-base superalloys of the Nimonic type have been fabricated by powder metallurgical methods, and their mechanical properties reported in detail.' FROM Aug. 31, 1937, until Apr. 30, 1939, there were 40,872,610 bbl. of oil run to storage in California; from Apr. 30, 1939, to Aug. 31 of the same year 5,512,912 bbl. were withdrawn from storage. But from Aug. 31, 1937, to Aug. 31, 1939, the number of producing wells in the state has increased from 17,706, with a potential production of 1,323,202 bbl., to 18,910, with a potential of 2,302,282 bbl. Thus, in a period of two years, during the first 20 months stocks increased over 1/3 and during the following four months stocks decreased 1/30. In the same two years the number of productive wells increased 1/15 and potential increased 3/4. Undoubtedly, the large increase in stocks created the pressure that caused the reduction in stocks that followed; yet this has come about in spite of the larger number of wells and higher potential. Cause of the change was the adoption on May 17, 1939, by the Central Committee of California Oil Producers of a uniform method of oil curtail-ment for all wells throughout the state. Acceptance of the method in the four months following adoption by practically all fields in California indicates that producers generally are convinced of its merit and fairness. True, some operators still overproduce, but the restraint practiced by the remainder of the industry has been sufficient to turn a situation headed for chaos into one of reasonable stability. Credit for this change goes to the industry itself, because it has all been accomplished under voluntary oil curtailment.

No one mill attribute it to the partiality of friendship if I claim for Thomas Sterry Hunt the right to a place among that little band of men whom nature has endowed with what seems an almost magical power of insight into her mysteries. But those of us who knew him well, while me never ceased to wonder at the breadth of his genius, the fertility of his imagination, and the wonderful capacity of his memory, learned that these native powers would have availed little to win him his rank in science, had they not been stimulated by ceaseless mental activity, indomitable perseverance, and unflagging industry. Thomas Sterry Hunt was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on September 5, 1826. He came on his mother's side from that good old stock which gave to Puritan England the gentle mystic Peter Sterry and that uncompromising preacher Thomas Sterry, who wrote the notable tract, " The Rot among the Bishops " in 1667, and that gave to New England Consider and John Sterry, the mathematicians. While lie was a child the family moved to Poughkeepsie on the Hudson. There the father died when Thomas, the oldest son, was twelve. The mother and her family of six young children returned to the old home in Connecticut. For a short time Thomas attended the public school; but it was for a short time only, as he, thus early, was required to share the burden of the family support and to seek employment.
