The Vice-Chairman, C. Colcock Jones; presided, in the absence of the Chairman. The amendment' to the By-Laws providing for the increase of the Executive Committee from five to seven members, having been formally presented at the annual meeting of June 18, 1915, and duly announced for consideration at this meeting, was voted on and unanimously adopted. Prof. Robert H. Richards of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; made a short address on the subject of ore concentration. The paper on the Geology and Ore Deposits of Mojave, County, Arizona, prepared by F. C. Shrader, was presented to the meeting by the Secretary and was discussed by Allen Burris and Dr. L. D. IT is often desirable to obtain one or more accurate horizontal sections of a blast furnace after blowing out. Wishing to do this, last April, in the case of No. 4 furnace at Glendon, which had worn in a very remarkable manner, the method described below was employed, with very good results. A scaffold was fixed in the furnace, and on it was placed a drawing- board, covered with paper, the top of which was made level at exactly the height at which the section was to he taken. (Fig. 8.) The centre of the furnace (which had previously been found, and marked on a plank across the top) was laid off on it by dropping a plumb-bob from above, and a strong needle was driven into the board in the centre. By means of a straight-edge and two plumb- bobs, the line passing through the centres of the front and back arches was also drawn on the board. The death of Louis Janin, which took place Mar. 6, 1914, at Santa Barbara, terminated the earthly career of almost the last survivor, and one of the most illustrious members, of that group of American mining engineers and metallurgists who, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, directed the development of the mineral resources of the Pacific slope. Highly variable milling procedures within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corp. in Nevada made it necessary to estimate copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. Estimation was made by first determining the relationships between desired metallurgical properties and the ore's petrology-copper mineral type, rock type, and copper grade. This relationship was then combined with previously estimated rock type, mineral type, and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict milling properties.

The US Department of Energy's Coal Preparation Branch has developed a computer program to calculate the performance characteristics of coal washing devices. This program uses specific gravity analyses of the clean coal and refuse streams as input, and generates dependent and independent performance criteria for the washer. Partition curves are internally represented in a functional form by a Weibull function. Comparisons are made between performance criteria calculated by hand and the performance criteria calculated by the program for 120 different dense medium cyclone tests. Results show that the computer program gives results in close agreement with hand-calculated values while greatly reducing the amount of time involved in performing the analyses.

During the last 30 years the inductive electro- magnetic method has been used chiefly in the search for massive sulphide mineralization. This application has met with varying degrees of success and in recent years has resulted in discovery of several large orebodies. Little has been written concerning its use in exploration for soft iron ores, but one of the present authors has reported on experiments with massive magnetic deposits. To augment the exploration tools available to geologists in delineating iron orebodies, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. and McPhar Geophysics Ltd. undertook in 1953 to apply the inductive electromagnetic method to Cleveland-Cliffs properties in the Lake Superior region. As a result of this project, equipment has been developed that enables simultaneous transmission of two audio frequency waves, and the field technique and interpretative procedure involved have furthered exploration in the district significantly.

IN the Indiana limestone district, some 50 or 60 per, cent of the merchantable stone in a quarry opening is waste, and only about 40 or 50 per cent of the stone from the opening is finally sold. So long as the present system of quarrying is used, the wastes measured and reported in this paper will continue. Comprehensive development of an entirely different method of quarrying, using wire saws for cutting, promises great improvement. Some of the savings to be expected are pointed out in the following pages. No attempt has been made to measure losses due to variations and natural flaws in the stone, since these vary greatly in different quarries, and accurate measurement would be difficult. The wastes that have been measured account for about 30 per cent of the total ledge, which leaves 20 or 30 per cent chargeable to unmeasured sources of loss.

(written discussion*).-When lump calcium cyanamid is immersed in the melt of mixed chlorides of the alkalies and alkaline earths in the manner described in the paper, the amount of sodium cyanide formed in the melt, as shown by numerous analyses, is but a small fraction of that formed by the reaction referred to by Mr. Johnson. The case-hardening effects in my process are, however, at least as good as when the common cyanide baths are used. Moreover, when compared with the cyanide baths, the gases evolved in the new process are harmless, consisting of nitrogen, carbon monoxide (which burns to carbon dioxide on the surface of the melt), and occasionally a little carbon dioxide. These gases are not irritating or poisonous, whereas the vapors arising from cyanide baths are both irritating and poisonous. The complex chemical reactions that take place in and on the surface of the melt are being investigated by the writer, who hopes, in due time, to communicate the results of his work.

WHAT DOES "MAGNETIC" MEAN? The word magnetic has several meanings. When used, as it usually is, without qualification one is often unable to tell which meaning is intended. 1. A body is magnetic which has power to attract iron magnetically. Such is a lodestone or magnet, either permanent or not. This is an active sense or meaning in that the body itself does the attracting or is .magnetic. 2. A body is magnetic which may be made to attract iron magnetically, as the iron core of an electro-magnet when not magnetized by the current. This is a potentially active meaning, the body being capable of becoming a magnet. 3. A body is magnetic which has the property of being. attracted by a magnet magnetically. Such are iron, cobalt, nickel, magnetic oxide of iron, magnetic alloys, etc. This is a passive meaning, the attracting being done by the actively magnetic body. With these three meanings to choose from, one must usually make a guess based on previous knowledge as to which is the right one. Would it

Greater stabilization in the petroleum industry was effected during 1934 through stricter compliance with curtailment measures and the establishment of the Pacific Coast Petroleum Agency. Various estimates of individual, company and state reserves revealed the fact that they were inadequate to sustain the present rate of production over a lengthy period, therefore drilling operations were increased during the year both in proved and wildcat territory. This greater activity resulted in the addition to reserves at Mountain View, Mount Poso and Edison in Kern County, Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara County and Playa del Rey in Los Angeles County. Additional reserves were also established in the Long Beach and Santa Fe Springs fields, in Los Angeles County, due to operators being successful in isolating small prolific sand bodies, formerly disregarded during the flush production periods.

The region of metallic ore deposits in northern Chile, southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina occurs in arid zones at altitudes as high as 6 km (19,700 ft). Because surface water supplies are meager, new mines require unexploited sources of water. Prolific ground water aquifers occur in salar basins in this region of the Andean Highlands. Exploration water wells have been constructed and aquifer characteristics have been tested in eight salar basins. Results indicate ground water quality is good. Aquifer transmissivity and storage computed from results of pumping tests indicate maximum capacities of more than 170 L/sec (2700 gpm) for individual production water wells. Results of investigations conducted by the authors demonstrate that ground water reservoirs in the Andean Highlands comprise a source of large quantities of water for the mineral industry.

Bond (Consulting Engineer, Processing Machinery Dept., Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Papers such as this one which deal in a lucid manner with the obscure fundamentals of comminution theory are always welcome. The author has attempted to bring together several diverse theories and handles them interestingly. However, some of the ideas expressed and conclusions drawn require critical reviewing, for which amenities alone will not suffice. The author points out that the theoretical energy required to break across crystal lattices is of the order of 1000 times the actual energy required to crush or grind, and that this energy in turn is perhaps 1000 times the measured surface energy of the new surface area produced. The energy required to grind commercially is controlled by flaws and dislocations, rather than by the inner strength of the lattice structure. The measured surface energy is only a slight residue left after the face atoms are adjusted to their new environment. Silver occurs in nature in major, minor and variable amounts in a very large variety of minerals and in several mineral species in the same ore. Because these minerals may respond differently to the same flotation or leaching agents, detailed studies to establish the correct silver mineralogy become essential for optimum recoveries in those situations where the silver is treated as a primary product. On the other hand, fine grain sizes, which often affect gold recoveries, are not generally as critical in silver metallurgy, due to the lower market price which allows for more of the element to remain In the tailings before incurring in economical losses.

ALTHOUGH the present economic depression is felt in the petroleum industry, probably as much as in any other branch of American industry, the Petroleum Section of the Institute was well represented at the general sessions on Monday and at all of the seven division sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The seven sessions of the Division were so arranged as not to conflict and thus permitted members to hear the programs of all sessions.* The first meeting of the Petroleum Division was held on Tuesday afternoon; a joint session on engineering research and production engineering. Over the past two and one-half years, various emission control strategies for a coal-fired power plant have been jointly developed by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners. The objective of this work was to assist the Homer City management in their efforts to comply with SO2 emission regulations while continuing to use the relatively high sulfur coal from their captive mines as the primary source of plant fuel. One of the operational strategies studied was to have the captive mines minimize the sulfur variability of the run-of-mine coal on a short term basis. A mine production scheduling program called COMPF2 was developed to perform this task. This paper describes the application of this mine planning program at an underground coal mine. A comparison of the planning results with actual production figures showed the ability of this program to schedule production so as to minimize both the sulfur content and the sulfur variability of run-of-mine coal.

INTRODUCTION The design of engineering structures such as mine openings in and foundations on rock requires a knowledge of the constitutive laws governing the behaviour of discontinuous and layered rock masses. At the present time there are two main approaches for predicting the stress distributions and displacements in such engineering structures. In one method, the whole of the rock mass is discretized. The behaviour of the components of the rock mass, that is, the joints and the intact rock are modelled using analytical techniques such as the finite or boundary element methods. Typically the intact rock is modelled as a linear elastic material bounded by non-linear discontinuities. An alternative method of analysis is to describe the load-deformation properties of the jointed, layered or even reinforced rock mass in terms of smeared or equivalent homogeneous material properties. Such equivalent material properties may then be used to compute the stress distributions around openings and in foundations using standard methods of analysis such as the finite or boundary element techniques. Once the stresses have been obtained for the equivalent material, the stresses in the individual constituent layers or discontinuities may then be determined. Each approach to the problem has particular advantages. The first method is more likely to yield results which more closely represent the behaviour of the rock mass, since the behavioural responses of both the joints and intact rock are modelled.
