This paper is presented in fulfillment of the promise made in my paper, " Remarks upon Surveying-Instruments,"" etc., and much of the material which would constitute an appropriate introductioil here is omitted, because it has been already published by the Institute, in connection with my own contributions- or those of Mr. Scott and others, in vols. xxviii. to xxxi. of the Transactions, and in the special Institute volume on Mine-Surveying Instruments. In these preceding publications will be found, for instance, descriptions of the writer's " miner's transit-theodolite" of 1863,† and his later " angleometer,"‡ both of which were steps of the progress in engineering instruments and methods which originated in the work of Bourns, before 1842, on the " BoxTunnel " of the Great Western railway in England, in which he had to make connections by direct telescopic sights down the shafts. About 1870 the writer devised a practical and much superior plan, and made detailed drawings for an instrument to meet all the conditions he had proposed prior to that year. The detailed plans were communicated to a celebrated optical firm in London; but, owing to their loss (in Paris or Germany, it is believed) and to other reasons, the matter was, for the time, allowed to lapse. Following upon Bourns's idea, my friend, the late Mr. Beansland, introduced, in 1856, a new system and a portable astronomical instrument.§ Such instruments, however, were neither common nor convenient, and did not come into general use among engineers.

A comprehensive analysis of the crystallographic and metallographic structure of several Al-CuAl, lamellar eutectic grains solidified under equilibrium conditions has been performed. A consistent pattern was discovered which was interpreted in terms of a detailed atomistic model of an interface describable as: Interface II {111} AL 11 {211} <101>Al <120> ? Several arguments are presented to substantiate the theory. It is compared in detail with another interface model characteristic of the Wid-manstatten precipitate of CuAl2 in A1 at low Cu levels. In addition, a concept is proposed to help explain the structure of the compound CuAl2. It has been shown that the eutectic alloy between A1 and CuA1, can be forced to solidify as substantially parallel lamellae throughout a relatively large volume&apos; by appropriately controlling the solidification parameters of growth rate, thermal gradients, and impurity level and by causing solidification to proceed in a unidirectional fashion from one end of an ingot to the other. A typical ingot solidified in this manner shows three distinct zones along the length of the ingot, Fig. 1. At the head end is a region consisting of many different grains, some of which are elongated slightly in the direction of solidification. After a few centimeters of growth, this polygrained region gradually merges into the second zone which consists of a very few elongated coarse grains. The third zone at the tail end is a region of eutectic colonies caused by segregation of impurities. Microscopic examination of transverse and longitudinal sections of the ingots reveals that during the initial stages of growth (zone I) the lamellar structure is frequently highly distorted and twisted but that it straightens out in zone 11. This characteristic pattern suggests that nucleation of a eutectic grain begins randomly at the head end of the ingot, and that some particular orientation relationship between the phases is more favorable from an energy consideration than others for one reason or another, so that some grains grow and others which are less favorably oriented do not. The favorably oriented or "low energy" grains continue to grow until excess solute rejected at the advancing liquid-solid interface destroys the parallel lamellar structure by forming a cellular rather than a substantially planar interface. When this occurs, the parallel lamellae fan out and eutectic colonies are formed because the lamellae grow perpendicular to the local interface. Questions naturally arise as to the crystallographic nature of the "low energy" grains. What do the grains which persist into zone II have in common? Can this explain the stability of such grains during growth? To answer the first question it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae of each phase relative to one another. This has been done for Al-CuAl2 eutectic alloys by two different techniques on specimens prepared in different ways.2&apos;3 The results were different from each other and from a third orientation relationship between A1 and CuA1, reported for overaged A1-Cu alloys.4 The three orientation relationships are summarized below to illustrate their similarities and their differences. Nor is it surprising that Mehl, Barrett, and Rhines 4 found still another value since they were studying another type of alloy. Nevertheless, it would be expected that some logical and systematic pattern could be found if all the alloys were at equilibrium since the same two phases are

Observation of the clinkering action of coal from the Castle Gate D seam in underfeed stokers over a period of years has given rise to the present investigation of the effect of bony coal on clinkering. Some very costly examples of slagging clinkers in particular cases have been of especial interest to the authors. In such cases coal analyses and ash-softening and fluid temperatures have been found of little value. In general, it was noted that slagging mas accompanied by a somewhat higher ash content of the stoker slack, and the suspicion naturally arose that foreign matter was the troublemaker. One would naturally suspect bony coal and rock impurities because of their occurrence and prevalence within the seam and the relative absence of sulphur or other impurities in the coal mined. The test results given herein indicate that the concentration of the bony coal and rock impurities in the coal determines the clinkering tendencies of the ash during combustion. Castle Gate D Seam Extending from the Utah-Colorado line near Grand Junction, Colo., westward to Greenriver, Utah, and thence in semicircular form north and westward to Castle Gate, and from there southward to Mt. Hilgard in central Utah, is a line of nearly perpendicular cliffs, composed of interbedded massive sandstone and shales, making up the coal-bearing horizon of the Mesaverde formation of Upper Cretaceous age. The cliffs face roughly concentrically toward the south and southeast and the strata, with conformably enclosed coal beds, gently dip away from the face of the cliffs and at right angles to their front line. Back of these cliffs the mountain masses rise to an altitude of from 8000 to 10,ooo ft. above sea level. Stretching away from their foot is a great shale plain, on which the towns are situated and over which the railroad lines and highways run. The Castle Gate mines enter the coal beds at their outcrop; the workings extending within a particular coal bed away from the outcrop and under the mountain mass back from the cliff line (Fig. I). Throughout the Mesaverde formation in the Castle Gate general area, there are from two to five workable coal beds. Usually not all of these are coincidentally of workable size and merchantable quality throughout any given large tract. In the Castle Gate mine area, the base of the Mesaverde horizon and coal measures is marked by a massive, cliffmaking, gray sandstone bed 60 to 80 ft. thick. Locally this is referred to as the "Castle Gate sandstone floor." Frank R. Clark, in U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 793, designates it as the "Aberdeen sandstone." At Castle Gate the various coal beds are designated by the letters A, B, C, etc., commencing with the lowest bed.

THE high-alumina clays of Missouri are interesting for several reasons. They are the only sedimentary deposits in North America of first grade (over 70 pct A1,0,) diaspore and boehmite sufficiently large to be mined commercially. Mineralogically, they are composed of diaspore and boehmite in intimate coexistence, but gibbsite, the common hydrated alumina mineral in bauxite and laterite, is absent, or is exceedingly scanty if present.* Therefore, the Missouri high-alumina clays do not represent typical laterization. The physical chemistry leading to their mineral genesis, and the geolbgical setting for their formation, present important problems for scientific study. The origin of the Missouri high-alumina clays has been discussed in earlier reports by Allen1 (1935) and McQueen 8, 9 (1929, 1943). These investigations were made under difficult conditions, however, because no diaspore deposit had been opened where a Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian) rock cover lay undisturbed over the high-alumina clay. The relationship of the clay to only the underlying rocks could actually be observed. Lacking the guidance of critical postdepositional geologic evidence, undue and erroneous emphasis was placed on the postdepositional leaching of the deposits in the theories on the origin of diaspore and boehmite from clay (hydrous aluminosilicates) . With new geologic evidence at hand, a clearer picture can be made for the origin of the Missouri high-alumina deposits. In this paper the geology of a diaspore deposit whose original Paleozoic cover had not been eroded will be described and interpreted genetically. The close relationship of boehmite and diaspore (also with kaolinite and a chloritic mineral), will be established. A theory of origin for the high-alumina clays, consistent with the new data, will be postulated.

R. F. McELVENNY.- The next item is: "Center and other methods, vs. side charging." That was all discussed in the Carson case, and I do not know but what many of the plants are still using center charging. Some are using side charging. Did I understand that where you use the wet charge it is all side charging on the wet ore? B.-G. C. HONEYMAN.- We were on center charging for about a year with wet ore. R. F. McELVENNY.- Then you went to side charging. Has anyone any remarks to make on side versus center charging? E. A. BARNARD.- We have one side and one center, both on deep bath. It is an experimental proposition so far, but the side charge looks very favorable.. R. F. McELVENNY.- This is with calcine? E. A. BARNARD.- This is with calcine on a floating charge proposition.. They are both water jacket. The charge acts very similar on both center and side charging. The calcine spreads much the same as it does on the center charge. It will run down 75 ft. on the furnace side as well as the center. The advantage is in taking care of secondaries and things of that nature. C. BARDWELL.- Do you get any side wall protection from it? E. A. BARNARD.- No. R. F. McKENZIE.- Do you not project the side wall up to protect the skewback? E. A. BARNARD.- There is a slot projection down around the top of the bath; but the repairs on the side wall have been practically the same; that is, they, have been practically the same as they have on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- A point I would like to make is that if you have any doubt about the center charging, we feel that we get better tonnages and lower fuel ratios and better slags with center charging than we ever got with side. Different kinds of charges would, of course, vary, and I could readily see that if you had the same advantage with deep bath smelting that you mention you would probably get just as good a slag and as good fuel ratios. E. A. BARNARD.- In fact, I think the calcine charge spreads more on the side than on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- If you maintain a deep bath. E. A. BARNARD.- That is one thing we have to be careful about, to hold the charge back.

THIS paper will attempt to show how a metallurgical problem at one California quicksilver mine was solved, and how the solution was applied successfully at another mine. The pronouns "we" and "our," as used below, refer to the Bradley Mining Co. of San Francisco. The term "concurrent firing" for the purpose of this paper can be defined as feeding and firing a rotary kiln at the same end-that is, of course, the upper end. This is as opposed to "counter-current firing," the orthodox method, in which a kiln is fed at the upper and fired at the lower end. The terms "quicksilver" and "mercury" are used interchangeably. EARLY REFERENCES The earliest work on nonferrous metallurgy, we believe, was The Pirotechnia of Vannocio Biringuccio,1 its first edition having been printed in Italy in 1540. Quoting from its chapter entitled "Concerning Quicksilver and Its Ore": Quicksilver . . . is one of the gods and has divine strength in itself, and also, to the annoyance of the alchemists, it is winged. Hence, when it sees that it is in gravest danger, it loosens itself from . . . every bond . . . and flies away into the heavens, escaping from the hands of those who crucify it. Almost laughing, it leaves all its adversaries mocked and scorned, with their phials and filters empty . . . How thorough a job, under certain conditions, it can do of mocking its adversaries and leaving their phials and filters empty, was found out four centuries later at the Sulphur Bank mine, on the east shore of Clear Lake, in Lake County, California. The other mine mentioned in the title is the Reed, in Yolo County, California, 35 miles by road southeast of Sulphur Bank. Reed and Sulphur Bank ranked respectively fifth and seventh in U. S. production in 1943. The earliest direct reference we can find to furnacing troubles at these mines was by Thomas Egleston in 1890.2 Speaking of Sulphur Bank, Egleston says: Sometimes there is more sulphur than cinnabar in the ore, which is a detriment to both . . . making the sulphur impure, and rendering the cinnabar difficult to work on account of the soot. In some of the early . . . furnaces the accumulation of soot from the excess of sulphur has been known to penetrate as far as the fan blower at the end of the . . . condensers, and completely prevent its revolution. In order to get rid of the inconvenience of this accumulation . . . , as well as to get a commercial value from the sulphur, it (the sulphur) is now separated by steam and sold. It is claimed that the sulphur alone pays all the expenses of . . . the mine. The mine was first worked for sulphur, and the cinnabar it contained was considered to be an inconvenience, and was carefully picked out and thrown away. as its richness and value were not

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. Duval (Mining Engineer, Ancien eleve de PEcole Polytechnique, Paris, France) I do not agree with the Eq. 3, reading: m =1/100- [(0.214x30.4) + (0.7B6 x0.00)] =6.5pct CaO If 0.214 and0.786 were proportions by weight, the equation would represent the well known mixtures law of the conventional arithmetics and 6. 5 pct CaO would be the correct average content. But it is not the case as the author states: "In samples consisting of single grains of mineral, those grains must, as already mentioned, be either of dolomite or magnesite. Since 78.6 pct of the deposit consists of magnesite and 21.4 pct of dolomite (excluding for present purpose the presence of other minerals), for any single grains picked at random the probability will be 0.214 that is it dolomite and0.786 that is it magnesite. In 1000 such samples the expected numbers of dolomite and mapesite grains will be 214 and 786 respectively." 0.214 and 0.786 would be proportions by weigbt under the necessary condition that all grains of dole mite and magnesite should have an identical weight. Obviously it is not the case, as the specific gravities are not the same for mapesite and dolomite and the volumes of the grains are different. Furthermore, because of these differences the conditions for a random sampling are not fulfilled and we are not authorized to state that the probabilities are, respectively, 0.214 and 0.786. The author however makes a simple application of Eq. 1: M = 1/n— ? fi x i . n Should we deduce that this relation is wrohg? Not at all, but when applying Eq. 1 you must not overlook what it actually. means. Eq. 1 gives a definition of the arithmetic mean of a total of n observed values Xi and nothing else. But the average conteht of a deposit has not the same significance. It is the ratio between the weight of concerned mineral in the deposit and the total weight of the deposit. As from 1000 particles the 214 of dolomite and the 786 of magnesite have not the same weight, the two definitions do not concur, and when applying Eq. 1 the result is an arithmetic mean of figures which has no connection with what is named average contentof a deposit. The situation is similar to the calculation of an average velocity. If a car travels a first mile over at 30 miles per hr and a second mile over at 60 miles per hr, when applying formula 1 you find as average velocity for the 2 miles: 30+60 ------- - 45 miles per hour. Many people calculate in this way and they do not realize that a mistake is involved. In fact the definition of he average velocity for the 2 miles is the quotient of the distance of 2 miles by the time (in hours) necessary for 2 miles travel, i.e.: 2 ---------- = 40 miles per hr. 1 + 1 30 60 In other words, the average volocity wanted is not the arithmetic but the harmonic average of the two velocities. The above mentioned bias in the calculation of the average contents of deposits is frequent, even in the assessments made by experienced engineers and is independant of what is named the sampling error. In order to supress the bias and to be able to use Eq. 1, you must apply a correction. An example on the subject can be found in an article by Duval et al. in the January 1955 issue of the &apos;&apos;Annales des Mines" (French), page 19. R. F. Schurtz (Author&apos;s Reply) Mr. Duval&apos;s position is quite correct. The proportions shown for dolomite and magnesite., respectively, of 0.214 and 0.786 are, in fact, proportions by weight uncorrected for specific gravity. In our day to day operation of producing magnesite from these mines at a very substantial rate, we do not normally make corrections for the difference between the specific gravity of dolomite and that of magnesite. If these corrections are made in Eq. 3 as shown in my article, then the numbers of grains turn out to be in proportions of 0.226 dolomite and 0.774 mapesite instead of the values actually shown in the equation. For the purposes of our work, and in view of the inherently low accuracy of the data, this correction was not deemed worthwhile making.

C. M. Bishop (Aircraft Div., A. V. Roe Cnnada Ltd., Toronto)—Reference is made to the coherency hardening of ß due to ß&apos; and also to the hardening of ß due to a coherent precipitation of the a phase. What is meant by the term "ß&apos;?" Would not the coherency hardening of ß during cooling be due to precipitation of a sub-microscopic dispersion of a, as is the case during reheating a ß-quenched alloy? I feel that these two phenomena are essentially the same mechanism, i.e., precipitation of a from unstable or supersaturated ß. From the text, it would appear that Tables III and IV are intended to show the effect of the martensite transformation on the properties of Ti-Mn alloys. Referring to Table 111, the ß-quenched alloys would contain a greater proportion of retained ß than would the equilibrated alloy. Could not the increase in properties be attributed to this, along with possible coherency hardening of the ß? In the same way, the structures referred to in Table IV contain ß from which they could derive their hardness. It would appear to be difficult, if not impossible, to assess the role of the martensite transformation from the data contained in these tables. F. C. Holden, H. R. Ogden, and R. I. Jaffee (authors&apos; reply)—In reply to the first question raised by Mr. Bishop, the term "ß"&apos; designates an apparent retained-p structure which is harder than it is after the most rapid cooling from the ß field. It is thought to be the result of a coherent precipitation of a. The mechanism by which hardening takes place is undoubtedly the same as that involved in the early stages of aging of a re-tained-p structure, and we are in agreement with Mr. Bishop on this point. The term "ß&apos;" to designate the anomalously hard retained-ß structure was agreed upon at a symposium in 1953." The authors do not agree that the quantity of retained ß and/or ß&apos; in the ß-quenched specimens of Table III is necessarily greater than that of the 600°C equilibrated specimens. The ß-quenched specimen has a structure which appears to be completely a&apos; formed by the martensite reaction. It is recognized that there could be some retained ß (or ß&apos;) between the a plates if the M, temperature is below room temperature. This is unlikely for the 3.4 pct Mn alloy where the M, is known to be at about 640°C. Therefore, the increase in strength cannot be attributed to the presence of a greater quantity of coherency-hardened ß, but, rather, the increase in strength must be attributed to the transformation products formed, e.g., a&apos; (martensiti-cally formed a). Concerning the data in Table IV, we agree that it is difficult to estimate the role of the martensite reaction, since the 6.4 pct Mn alloy was retained ß in the quenched condition.

From the historical account of the coal industry set forth in the preceding pages the reader will have learned that coal is extremely widely spread throughout the United States, and in most places it has been easily found, that it has been remarkably easy to develop, and, where the deposits were available to streams on which it could be transported to markets, it was opened almost as soon as the country was settled. Such were the mines along the James, Susquehanna, Monongahela, Ohio, Kentucky, Cumberland and Big Muddy Rivers. In other localities where such easy means of transport were not convenient, the early production was confined to local use, or to places to which it could be hauled by wagons, but everywhere small mines were established almost as soon as the country was settled, and these increased both in number and size as the available markets grew. These early mines were nearly always opened by local people, and the industry was so far-flung that its growth attracted little or no attention excepting when a labor disturbance or a breakdown in transportation occurred. Had it been concentrated in a few places as most metal industries were, or as the petroleum industry was for many years after it started, it is probable that much better records of its progress would have been kept. When the canal era began, in the eighteen twenties, coal was at first not considered as a valuable source of freight revenue, and much surprise was expressed that the receipts of the Schuylkill Canal were very largely from coal after the first few years, as was the case of the Union Canal though not to such an extent. Even the early railroads to the coal fields did not realize the extent to which the products of mines would figure in their revenues, and it was many years before railroads were built practically solely for prospective coal traffic; indeed this did not happen until some years after the Civil War. Map 12 shows the extent of the canal system in the United States in its relation to the coal fields at the time of its maximum development. It will be seen that only the coal areas in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and to a very small extent in Indiana were able to ship by canal at all, and that only a very small portion of such fields could do so. Meteor Crater, Arizona, is a natural wonder which for years has been the subject of considerable discussion and study as to its origin and age (Fig. 1). Of the various theories advanced regarding the origin, two have been considered as most probable by a majority of investigators. The first theory is that the crater was formed by a meteorite or a swarm of meteoric material striking the earth at a high velocity and burying itself. The second theory is that the crater was formed by a "steam explosion" from hot solutions or gases coming from underneath the present sedimentary beds which overlie the area. In order to obtain more detailed information regarding the conditions existing at the crater, the present management decided to have a detailed geophysical examination made. The origin of the crater is of considerable scientific importance and interest. More or less active mining operations have been carried out during the past 20 years by various groups who believed that the crater was of meteoric origin, and who hoped that sufficient quantities of such material had been buried to be commercially valuable. Fragments of meteoric material found on the surface of the ground in the debris around the rim gave analysis of approximately 92 per cent iron and 8 per cent nickel, with some platinum and iridium. The material having a gross value of approximately $50 per ton, mining would be commercially profitable if sufficient quantities of the material existed in condition for mining. In the early work numerous drill holes and shallow shafts were put down, mainly in the northern portion of the crater. Pulverized material and debris caused considerable difficulty, and in an effort to overcome this the present management started a 1500-ft., two-compartment shaft on the south rim of the crater and outside of the fill zone. The intention was to sink the shaft in the solid rock outside of the crater, and then to crosscut toward the crater at a depth of 1500 ft. The work was finally stopped when a depth of 650 ft. was reached, because water poured into the shaft through large cracks and fissures in the rock. THE American iron and steel manufacturer finds himself to-clay barely at the threshold of enormous possibilities for practicing rational economy in the use of fuels. The fuel cost is by no means the smallest of items which enter into the cost of manufacture of iron and steel products, but the great wealth of this country in high-grade fuels, together with a protective tariff, has heretofore made fuel economy relatively unimportant. In Germany, the use of raw coal for the purposes of iron and steel manufacture has been all but abandoned and large sums of money, formerly irrevocably wasted, are now being saved. When scanning the literature of this country devoted to the application of gas power, but little information will be found on a subject which, however, is destined to become of considerable importance in the United States, namely, the use of coke-oven gas for the generation of power in gas engines. This lack of information can be traced to the fact that the regenerative by-product coke oven with its large amount of surplus gas is still far from having attained in this country the universal application which it has found in Europe. This statement needs hardy any corroboration other than the evidence of statistical investigations made by E. W. Parker of the United States Geological Survey, according to which only approximately 25 per cent. of the total coke produced in this country in 1912 was made in by-product coke ovens, whereas 75 per cent. was produced in bee-hive ovens. This entailed the enormous loss of over $80,000,000 in non-recovered by-products, such as gas, tar, and ammonia, without considering the substantial loss due to the non-recovery of benzol from the coal. There are two more or less distinct fields of application of the by-product coke oven: one, to furnish as the main product metallurgical coke of specified quality, and surplus coke-oven gas as the by-product, and the other, to carbonize high-volatile coals, and thus produce as the main product large quantities of gas, high in heat value and rich in illuminants, adapted primarily for domestic heating and lighting, while domestic coke becomes the by-product.

The finishing and casting temperature of steel is a subject concerning which there is so much to learn that some temerity is required to write about it. This paper is, therefore, suggestive rather than dogmatic, though the views expressed seem now to the writer to be correct; nevertheless, they may be modified by future developments or discoveries but until then may be of some utility, particularly to beginners in the making of steel. Consideration is limited to the temperatures of simple steels, also called carbon steels, which are those in which carbon is the only element introduced for the purpose of conferring desired physical properties. Alloy steels will receive attention later. Three things largely determine what a batch of steel really will be; via., composition, casting temperature, and rate of teeming. Each has its advocates as being the most important; but they are so interrelated that each must conform to or be right for the other two. When one is claimed to be the most essential to have right, that, probably, was the one that it was found had to be of a certain description, within narrow limits, to suit the already adopted variations of the other two; that is, it was the last of the three to be brought into line. The term "casting temperature" is rather indefinite as there ale several temperatures to which the term may be applied. Most writers who have mentioned casting temperature of steel have alluded to it in relative terms. The few who have given actual temperatures, including Langmuir, Burgess, Styri, and Bash, do not give full information about them. Their results demonstrate the efficiency of pyrometers used rather than aid the steelmaker. In order to understand and use the temperatures, one should know in each case what the steel was, the stage at which the temperature was taken, whether it was usual or not, and whether or not it was right for that steel at that stage. THE Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Limited, is in the town of Asbestos, situated approximately 100 miles northeast of Montreal and about the same distance southwest of Quebec, in Richmond County, Quebec. Mining operations were started in 1881 on outcrops on a hill, as a side-hill cut, followed by a second and third cut. This development was the forerunner of the present large open-pit operations, the mine now ranking as the largest openpit asbestos mine in the world. Operations were first carried on by hand, then by horsepower and later by stem cableways. By 1924 the derrick spans, 2000 ft. or more long, became unwieldy. To overcome this, and also to eliminate hand labor as much as possible, steam shovels and railroad haulage were introduced. The steam shovels were replaced in 1928 by larger electric shovels of the full-revolving type. THE ORE BODY The ore body is a serpentinized peridotite rock mass. The chrysotile fibers form a network of veins throughout, varying from microscopic width to two or more inches measured across the veins (Fig. I). These veins may be continuous for a few or many feet; they may increase or decrease in width within a few feet. The veins in which the fibers occur perpendicular to the veins are known as cross fiber. Those in which the fibers lay parallel to the veins are known as slip fiber. An improved general rate equation for a one-ditnensional gas-solid system has been derived. Fov the veversihle interfacial chemical reaction, there are concentrations of gaseous reactant and product at the reacting zone to be considered. They have been calculated with the velations fuvnished by the constraints on the system, namely, quasi-steady state and equimolal counterdiffusion of the gases. The results of the diffusiori study of Evans, Watson, and ,Mason based on the "dusty gas" model have been applied here. The interfacial chemical reaction is taken as first-order with respect to the concentration of the gases involved. The equation has proper dependence on gas composition and on solid structure through the relative values of Knudsen and normal diffusivities. The existence of the total pressure gradient inside the specimen has been predicted and confirmed experimentally. In a previous communication&apos; we introduced a general rate equation for gas-solid reactions by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter- phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. These equations, for one-dimensional and spherical specimens, take care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. In this paper we study only the one-dimensional system. The corresponding rate equation is reproduced here: Of the two terms on the right-hand side of Eq. [I], the first represents the contribution of interfacial chemical reaction and the second that of gaseous diffusion. The shortcomings of Eq. [I] are that in its derivation the interfacial chemical reaction was assumed to be irreversible and the diffusion rate of gaseous product was not considered. Any pressure effects building up within the porous media were also neglected. Evidently. these simplifying assumptions will limit the general applicability of these equations. The rate of reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen, for instance, is very sensitive to the concentration of water vapor in the main gas stream, as has been reported by cewan&apos; and by Quets et a1.3 Furthermore, the gaseous phase at the reacting interface will contain an appreciable amount of the gaseous product of reaction. If this were not true, a sufficiently high concentration gradient for the outward diffusion of the gaseous product could not be maintained. With these shortcomings in mind, Eq. Minor industrial minerals included in this chapter are: the alum minerals, bromine, calcium chloride, epsomite and other natural magnesium salts, iodine, meerschaum, quartz, industrial crystals other than quartz, and nonfuel gases (air, helium, carbon dioxide). Alum Minerals The natural alums comprise a group of hydrated double sulfates, the most important of which are potash alum, KAI(S04)2.12H20, the "alum" of popular usage; ammonium alum, (NH4)AI(SO4)2, known mineralogically as tschermigite; and soda alum, NaAI(SO4)2.12H20. Kalinite, KAI(SO4)2.11H20, and mendozite, NaAl(SO4)2, 11H20, are fibrous monoclinic alums, distinct from the isometric species potash alum and soda alum.4 Alunite, KAI3(S04)2(OH)6, also known as alumstone or alum rock, has been used as a raw material in the manufacture of alum since early times. All the natural alums are highly soluble and occur as surface evaporation products in arid regions or in sheltered places. Potash alum, together with the other natural alums, commonly occurs as an efflorescence or crevice filling in argillaceous rocks and brown coals that contain disseminated pyrite or marcasite. The mineral is derived by the action of sulfuric acid, formed during the weathering of the sulfide, upon alkali-rich aluminum silicates. Ammonia alum is found chiefly in lignite or broad-coal beds and bituminous shales. Alunite is most commonly associated with acid volcanic rocks, where the rock has been largely altered and alunite formed owing to the presence of sulfuric acid solutions or vapors. Aluminum sulfate, which for most uses is the essential ingredient of alum, may be found in saline residues resulting from the evaporation of natural water and may be formed by the action of acid waters upon aluminous rocks. A deposit of natural potash alum occurs in an irregular network of veins associated with sulfur in rhyolite in Esmeralda County, Nevada, about 35 miles west of Tonopah and 10 miles north of Silver Peak. Alum was recovered at a plant operated on the property between 1920 and 1923 by crushing the ore to ¾ in., grinding to minus 80-mesh, and counter-current leaching; the resulting alum solution was then filtered and crystallized. Alunite was of much interest during World War I as a source of potash and during World War II as a source of alumina. The wellknown deposits at Tolfa, Italy, are veins in trachyte and have been the basis of alum manufacture there since the middle of the fifteenth century. Pure alunite is insoluble in water and in common acids, but if it is heated to 500°C it loses its water of hydration, and the residue consists largely of anhydrous potash alum, part of which is readily soluble in water or acids. If the heat is increased beyond 500°C, most of the sulfur combined with the alumina is released as oxides and the residue consists of potassium sulfate and alumina. Tax operation of "softening" in lead refining is designed, as the word implies, to separate from the bulk of the lead the elements that tend to make lead hard. These elements, which invariably are present in argentiferous lead, interfere with the desilverization, and must be almost entirely absent in refined desilverized lead. They are mainly copper, antimony, arsenic and tin. The properties utilized in accomplishing this separation are the low solubility of copper or copper sulphide in lead at its freezing-point temperature, and the greater and selective affinity for oxygen of the other elements at temperatures of the order of 700° to 900&apos; C., or, in the prcsence of sufficient, alkali, at a temperature of about 500&apos; C. The major problems of softening lead bullion lie in the necessary subsequent treatment of the by-products of the primary operation, which contain, either chemically or mechanically, lead or reagents that must be isolated for market or re-use. Therefore an important objective of the primary operation must be the highest practicable concentration of these elements in the by-products. Within the past three decades, during which the writer has been engaged in lead refining, the technique of softening lead bullion has had as many variations as there were lead refineries. This was the result of the variation in composition and character of lead bullion recived. In my experience, perhaps the most interesting problems came up during the testing, prospecting, developing and equipping of the Chuquicamata and Braden Copper Mines in Chile, and it is proposed in this article to give as briefly as possible what some of those problems were, their solutions, and the decisions made as to the different methods to be employed. The romance of mining is still a great lure to the young man who is making a choice of a profession to follow. The thought of travel to strange and out-of-the-way places, the glamor of pioneer life, the excitement of discovery, the constructive work of building something, entirely "from the grass roots up," or of reconstructing a played-out property and making a success of it-all of these phases have a strong appeal and often influence the young man in the choice of mining as a profession. That great engineer, Col. Seeley Wintersmith Mudd, whom we are endeavoring to honor, while having too much common sense to have been materially influenced by the romance of mining, certainly experienced all of the
