Much has been written about the energy fuels including their standing with respect to reserves, their delivered Btu costs, their potential in the electrical generating market and their capabilities to meet a burgeoning demand. Yet, when all factors are placed in their proper perspective, the spiraling electrical energy market alone should guarantee each fuel a better than average market for the foreseeable future. In fact, a study made by the U.S. Federal Power Commission on the spare capacity utilities have on hand indicated that 39 of the 181 major utility systems had less than 10% reserves on hand at the end of 1969. Fuel supplies are critically low in some areas, especially in the Southeast, South Central and Midwest areas of the U.S. In other systems equipment shortages resulting from faulty equipment or delays in getting new equipment deliveries causes power failures during peak loads. In addition, lack of labor curtails the erection of some new facilities and prevents many other facilities from operating at capacity.

Cobalt consumption will increase during the next decade at an average rate at least equal that of nickel. In the past, use of cobalt has at times been curtailed by lack of availability or by high price. In the future, output of cobalt derived from copper ores and iron sulfides will continue to grow and output of cobalt from nickel ores will be greatly increased. There should therefore be an adequate supply of this metal at a reasonable price. Nickeliferous limonites constitute by far the largest known terrestrial reserves of cobalt. A process has been conceived, based upon selective reduction and aqueous chlorination for treatment of such ores. The proposed procedure permits good extraction of the ore's cobalt content, comparable to that of the nickel, and is adaptable to large-scale, automated unit operations. Chlorine leaching of the ore enhances its value as a potential source of iron and chromium. Over four thousand years ago, cobalt pigments were employed for decorative purposes in some glass and glazes of Egypt and Persia, and by 1000 B.C. they were widely used in the Middle East.' " However, prior to 1914, virtually no cobalt was produced as metal and ceramics remained the largest consumer of the element as oxide. During World War I cobalt-containing high-speed steels came into their own and the metal's merit in magnet steels was established.

Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year, 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million of crude and 7 ¼ million tons of concentrate and pellets, which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody, or new orebodies, a particular drill will be most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock property. For the rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes, and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index.

By substituting photoelectric automatic car loading for mechanically induced hydraulic automatic loading and by protecting the process against operational failures, the engineering staff at International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s Carlsbad potash mine has developed a reliable loading process that operates without an attendant. The photoelectric control, developed primarily because of frequent failures in the hydraulic control system, has not changed the basic loading operation and physical layout. Mine-run ore ranging in size from minus 200 mesh to 30-in. lumps is dumped onto a conveyor belt which discharges into a so-called "flop gate chute" which in turn, feeds the ore into six-ton capacity mine cars. Each car is filled progressively by moving the entire trip forward. When a car is filled 12 in. above its rim, the direction of flow into the car is reversed 180º and filling of the next car back is begun while the entire trip is moved forward again. Once the next car is properly spotted under the front chute, the flow is again directed to the forward position.

A TECHNIQUE has been developed for the microscopic study of the three-dimensional structure of the Pb-Sb alloys by the formation of a chemical replica in which the internal structure of the metal may be seen directly. Early work on chemical precipitation of metals from metal salt solutions is reviewed. The chemistry and thermodynamics of precipitating copper, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium metals by reaction with hydrogen are discussed. Mechanisms of metal precipitation, nucleation, growth, and agglomeration are reviewed, as well as some solubility phenomena of gases and solids at elevated temperatures. Experimental data presented deal mainly with the reaction of copper sulfate solution with Hz.

RATHBUN,* Salt Lake City, Utah (written discussion?).¬While the engineer should carefully weigh the merits of the various types of equipment, he must bear in mind that the object of his plant is the recovery of suspended solids, and a thing is unimportant except as it contributes to this end, other engineering principles being duly considered. The controversy regarding the use of synchronous motor-driven rectifiers by which the power for the treater is taken directly from the mains of the local power system, rather than the motor-generator rectifier giving each treater unit its own isolated electrical system, has led many to think that on the type of rectifier depends the success of .the plant. It is in fact a relatively unimportant part of the plant and represents a very small fraction of the investment; the recoveries in dust and fume are practically the same in each case. One large smelting concern has adopted the motor-generator type for all of its plants after years of experience with the synchronous-motor type. Its reasons are practically the same as those set down by Mr. Eschholz for his preference. Given more in detail they are: 1. An independent electric system prevents outside power-line conditions, like voltage fluctuations, from interfering with the operation of the Cottrell plant and eliminates the possibility of the Cottrell plant causing trouble for the power company. FOR the last 20 years, geophysical methods have been in practical use. The results accumulated during this time have been broad enough to enable us to formulate some general rules for conducting geophysical surveys to the best advantage. It is a well established fact that electrical and magnetic methods have aided the geologist to outline bodies of ore, to differentiate between various types of rocks hidden from view and also to determine the thick-ness of the layer of drift that covers the bedrock. Fundamental require-ments for a successful solution of a geophysical problem is the existence of physical differences between the various formations under investiga-tion. If such conditions exist, our problem becomes a physical, mathe-matical and geological analysis of the effects of these differences upon the structure of an arbitrarily produced, or already existing, field of force. Experience has shown that reliable and consistent results in analyzing such fields of force are obtained only if: (1) the methods and apparatus used are scientifically sound and designed to provide information with a maximum amount of accuracy, reliability, sensitivity, simplicity and speed of operation, and (2) the interpretation of the results of such an investigation is guided not only by rigid mathematical rules but also by common sense, based upon sound geological knowledge and imagination. Today, a number of methods are based upon sound principles, are highly sensitive and are well suited for field work. The instrumental developments have resulted in self-contained instruments, which permit the determination of field ratios and intensities with great accuracy. Magnetic surveys have almost become standardized. The electrical methods, mostly based on the determination of potential-drop ratios, or electromagnetic field ratios, are built as bridge circuits and it is easy to determine amplitude, as well as phase relationship of the various electrical and electromagnetic fields.

In the metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alkaline or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have successfully introduced it in the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. It is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investiga-tion1,2 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper. Importance of Gas-solid Contact One of the authors has pointed out in a previous report? that the operation of the blast-furnace process is entirely dependent on contact between the gas stream and the solid particles in the stock. The gas stream carries the necessary heat as well as the carbon monoxide molecules that do the work of rednction. In the parts of the furnace in which there is little or no contact between the gas stream and the solids there can be little work of reduction. Obviously, the part of the apparatus that is not doing the work for which it is intended is inefficient; the ideal condition is one in which all portions of the stock column are

DURING the war period of quicksilver activity there were a number of departures from what may be termed the classical quicksilver metallurgy. Attempts were made to beneficiate low-grade ores by gravity concentration and flotation; mechanical furnaces began to replace the Scott furnace and the vertical coarse-ore furnaces, and condensers of sewer tile and redwood tanks were used in place of the older brick and stone condensing chambers. Other developments that have occurred during the current period of quicksilver, activity are mainly in the nature of improvement and further refinement of those started during the war period. Each period of quicksilver activity has been accompanied by the proposal of various new processes, including wet methods for the treatment of quicksilver ores and innovations in furnaces, retorts and condenser equipment. As far as the author knows, nothing of economic significance in the way of "new processes" has been developed. There is in fact no real need for any essentially new process for the treatment of quicksilver ores; the direct furnace treatment is simple and inexpensive. Moreover, with fare exceptions, the quicksilver industry has no complex or refractory ore problems corresponding to those which are receiving more and more attention from metallurgists in other branches of the nonferrous field. Under these conditions improvements in quicksilver metallurgy must be looked for through the adaptation of current developments in engineering and metallurgy generally to the particular needs of quicksilver practice rather than through the invention of new processes.

Since April, 1962, Shell Oil Co. has operated a peripheral line-drive waterflood of the 10.750-ft lower Tuscaloosa (Cretaceous) Denkman sand in the Little Creek field. Located in southwestern Mississippi in the lower Tuscaloosa trend, the field was discovered by Shell in Jan., 1958. Among the largest in the trend, the accumulation is controlled stratigraphically and occurs in an extensive series of alluvial-point bar deposits across a nose that dips gently to the south. The crude oil is 39" API gravity and was highly undersaturated at initial conditions. Early production behavior indicated a depletion drive with slight water influx; primary recovery wm estimated to be 25 million bbl, or 24.5 percent of stock-tank oil originally in place. A.s a result of a favorable mobility ratio and remarkably uniform rock properties, the volumetric sweep eficiency in the waterflood has exceeded 90 percent. Despite the high connate water saturation (56 percent), the displacement efficiency by water injection has been quite efficient, contrary to traditional concepts. Based on observed field flood-out performance, ultimate recovery is calculated to be 46 million bbl. As anticipated, the production rate began declining during 1964 due to a continu ing reducrion in the number of producing wells as flood fronts advanced across the field. Cumulative recovery as of Jan., 1968, was 44.8 million bbl; waterflood operations ~hould be complete by 1970. Introduction Most waterfloods described in reservoir engineering literature involve pattern operations, the most common of which is the five-spot pattern. Only occasiona'lly are linear drives described, even though there probably are increasing numbers being put into operation. Increasing use of linear floods may reflect the accelerating trend towards early application of fluid-injection programs when linear drives are more efficient, as was the case at Little Creek. However. the Little Creek operation is unusual in several respects. It is one of a few successful waterfloods conducted in sands with connate water saturations approaching 60 percent, and it is among the deepest successful water-floods being operated anywhere. Development The Little Creek field was discovered in Jan., 1958, in the lower Tuscaloosa trend in southwestern Mississippi (Fig. 1). The discovery well, Shell-Lemann No. 1, was drilled on a seismic closure about 2 miles southeast of lower Tuscaloosa production at Sweetwater. The well was completed in the Denkman sand at 10,752 ft, and on initial potential it flowed 588 BOPD of 39" API crude on a %+-in. choke; psi was 730 and GOR was 442:l. Development proceeded rapidly on 40-acre spacing, and by the end of 1958 the field was producing approximately 9,100 B/D from 56 wells. Almost all this production came from the northern half of the field. The southern part was discovered in Nov., 1958, at a location almost 2 miles from previously established production. Subsequent drilling established an apparent conneotion about half a mile wide between the twd areas. Development of the field was practically complete by 1961 with the drilling of 155 producers and 35 dry holes. Some early wells were completed open hole but moslt are completed with casing cemented through the productive interval and perforated for production. Geology The lower Tuscaloosa structure in this area is a north-south nose with maximum dips of about 2" on the flanks. There is no discernible faulting at the producing horizon. Productive limits of the field are shown in Fig. 2, which is contoured on a marker just above the main productive zone. A common water level at 10,415 ft subsea was logged at both the northwest and southeast ends of the field. There is a gross oil column of nearly 100 ft (Fig. 2). Since there is less than 40 ft of closure, it is apparent that bhe accumubtion is controlled stratigraphically, being limited by a sand pinch-out across the creslt of the nose. The total produc-

Fox several years there has been in progress in the Materials Testing Laboratory of the University of Illinois an investigation of creep and fracture of lead and lead alloys. In the course of this investigation it has been shown that the phenomenon of creep occurs in part at the grain boundaries of lead and lead alloys. To study the occurrence of creep and the development of fracture within crystalline grains, two series of tests of single crystals of lead have been carried out. The first of these, a preliminary series, by Mr. Betty, has been described.1,2 The second, pursued by Mr. Baker for his doctoral dissertation, was carried out under the direction of Professor Moore, with the assistance of Prof. G. L. Clark in the X-ray work, and the cooperation and advice of Mr. Betty. This paper is based on the test data obtained in this second series. Single crystals of a very pure commercial lead have been prepared, some of them tested to measure creep, others tested to fracture under long-continued steady load, and still others tested under cycles of repeated tension. An interpretation of the test data of these single-crystal tests is offered, which is a combination of parts of several well-known theories. SPECIMENS The single-crystal specimens were made from a piece of very pure commercial lead sheathing. A spectroscopic analysis of one of the single crystals showed the presence of 0.005 per cent Bi, 0.0001 per cent Cu and 0.0003 per cent Ag. Preparation.-The Bridgman method of casting single-crystal speci¬mens was used.3 The specimens were cast to the shape and size shown in Fig. I (dimensions in Fig. 4c) in a duralumin mold. This paper treats primarily of the valuation of developed coal properties by the method of capitalizing their estimated average future earnings. However, reference is also made to valuations of undeveloped coal lands and to various methods of appraisal other than by future earnings. Fundamental Valuation Principles Before discussing in detail coal property valuations, a few statements bearing on the general subject will be made to present certain of the writer's views on the question as a whole. 1. A certain property at a given time has but one true value. This is not universally admitted. The appraiser rather frequently finds that a coal owner has in mind three valuations for his holdings; one, the figure at which he feels they should be appraised for taxation purposes; another, the much higher one that should be used if a loan is to be negotiated on the property; and a third, intermediate between the other two, the price for which he would be willing to dispose of his holdings were they for sale. The last is usually nearest to the true value, and because this is so the statement is generally accepted that the fair value of such a property is the price arrived at by negotiation between a willing seller and a willing buyer who are otherwise disinterested. 2. Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is only very generally and approximately true that the proper measure of the value of a given developed' coal acreage is the unit or per-acre price for which one or more bodies of similar coal in the same district have been sold recently. To give a few reasons why such a measure of value can not be strictly applied, it may be noted: a. That sales are often forced by circumstances at times when the coal business is depressed and buyers can be found only for properties that are offered at figures far below their true value. b. That conversely, during periods of unusual prosperity, abnormally high prices are paid. Such conditions obtained several years ago when coal brokers, with very profitable contracts but no sure source of supply, were bidding against inexperienced or shortsighted operators for proper-

DURING the last half century a great amount, of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and-slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every, dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus,, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the .place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of. years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes :- The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the huddles and round tables on . the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

AS IS evident from the discussion in previous chapters, the methods by which an open-hearth heat may be made are numerous, but any heat, in the ingot form, may be classified as one of three types, depending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the metal is subjected. These are rimmed, semikilled, and killed, and desirable ingot structures, from the standpoint of distribution of porosity, are illustrated in Fig. 63. These are the most useful types of ingot structure [ ] and represent three stages in the continuous series from "wild" to "dead killed" (see Fig. 23, page 46) ; some of the variations of each type are discussed later in the chapter. The choice of ingot structure and of finishing practice used to produce the desired metal action in the molds is determined by consideration of: 1. Specified final analysis. As an example, the production of rimmed steels is mostly limited to carbon contents below 0.30 per cent and manganese contents below 0.60 per cent; on the other hand the production of low-carbon killed steel requires greater care.

DuRing the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were suggested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary. Preliminary Studies Fluorspar.—The fluorspar deposits of southern Illinois as shown by Weller,1 Bastin2 and others are of two main types: (1) vein deposits along steeply dipping normal fault planes, and (2) "blanket" deposits occurring practically horizontally along a certain sedimentary horizon. The vein deposits are composed mostly of calcite and fluorspar in sheetlike veins of thicknesses, where mined, ranging from about 2 to 12 ft. The surrounding topography is in a mature state of development with a relief of about 100 ft. or more. Any geophysical prospecting for this ore would have to depend either upon the physical properties of the ore and associated minerals or upon the properties of the geologic structure containing them. Fluorspar has a density of 3.18, which is somewhat greater than 2.7, that of calcite. Its
