After the close of the Revolution, settlers began to pour over the mountains, to settle in the western parts of Pennsylvania, of Virginia, to move down the Ohio into Kentucky, and in the late seventeen-eighties to settle on "the Indian side" of the river, now Ohio. With the growth of population the interest in coal increased and it was not long before the production of coal west of the mountains was larger than that east of them. Foreign nations, too, became interested in the young republic and in 1783, at the instance of the Swedish government S. A. Hermelin, an engineer, visited this country to investigate its iron industry. He made a very interesting report, not published until 1931, in which he gave many details of the iron plants in the eastern United States; apparently he was not west of the mountains, but was well informed about conditions there. He says, "that some coal near the first branches of the Schuylkill River has been mined and utilized by the blacksmiths," referring, of course, to anthracite; again that "coal mines have also been worked for several years near Pittsburg," and that "great supplies of iron ore are available at the Ohio Falls and further to the west, at Coney Creek, a part of the Green River, where there is also coal."' In 1788, Dr. Johann David Schoepf, who came to this country with the Hessian troops, visited Pittsburgh. He was an intelligent man and acquainted to some extent with minerals and methods of working them. Until recently, the characteristics of cast copper have seldom been studied and such study as has been made has been inadequate. The prevailing idea seems to be that since pure copper is infrequently used in the cast stlate, there is no reason for trying to establish precise data regarding the properties of the metal in that condition. On the other hand, wrought copper either in the shape of sheets or wire rarely fails in service, except as a result of the action of reducing gases at the annealing temperatures, so there is little incentive to study the properties of the cast shapes —cakes, bars, ingots and billets—for the sake of tracing the causes of failures of the wrought metal to the cast stock. However, about a decade ago, wirebars of American origin often cracked badly while being hot-rolled in mills in Germany. This Icd to four investigations: by E. Seidl and E. Schieboldll by P. Siebe12 by 0. Bauer and G. Sachs,3 and by G. Welter.4 These authors came to the conclusion that failures in hot-rolling were due essentially to the presence of a wide zone of columnar crystals between t'he thin layer of fine crystal5 near the surfaces of the bars and the large but more nearly equiaxed grains of the central core. This macrostructural defect was explained in turn by the probable upward deviation in the temperature of the metal while it was being poured into the molds of the castling machine. More recently, cast shapes of copper were investigated by X. 1'. Allenh and by C. Blazey. Allen examined vertically cast wirebars and hori-zontally cast wedge cakes of electrolytic tough-pitch copper, but only for the distribution of densities; i.e., porosity. Blazey was interested mainly in the mechanism of the variations in electrical conductivity due to cold-work and anneal, but gave introductively an account of the composi-tion and average densities of the tough-pitch horizontally cast Wirebars used. As far as the present writer can tell, no investigation mas under-taken for the sake of presenting a picture of the distribution of mechanical characteristics in the wirebars of copper, or otherwise.

After the phenomenal development of the new mine, the United Eastern Mining Co., with Mr. Frank A. Keith as President, decided to install a reduction plant. The character of the ore, closely resembling the product of other mines in the district, did not offer any particular metallurgical problems, since these neighboring mines had been operating milling plants very successfully for several years. Thus, with the general metallurgical treatment fairly well-defined, the matter of next importance was to design and construct a plant as economically as possible, that would give the best results obtainable. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz in about equal quantities, with some decomposed andesite, while the average value of mill feed was calculated to be $20 or more in gold, no silver being present. The tonnage to be treated at the start was fixed at 200 tons, but, in view of the favorable condition of the mine, it was considered advisable to arrange facilities for increasing the capacity to 400 tons. While it is best in some cases to adopt a distinct independent unit system where future enlargement is contemplated, in this instance the plans worked out differently. Summarized, the treatment adopted consists of coarse crushing, coarse grinding, fine grinding and cyanidation. For coarse crushing the selection of the No. 6 size gyratory crusher was governed not so much by its capacity as by the size of the feed openings to receive the run-of-mine material, which was too coarse for a No. 5 crusher. TO accomplish the coarse grinding to best advantage, a careful comparison was made between the modern steel ball-mill—the last word in crushing and grinding—and one of its older, and, at that time better-established, competitors, the rolls. The following conclusion was reached: While it is possible that for the sized plant under consideration the cost of operating rolls might be a little cheaper, it is preferable to use ball-mills because a simpler arrangement is possible, and because the handling of ball-mills is preferred by the operator. A marked departure was introduced for fine grinding. Instead of the long type of tube-mill, using pebbles, a mill of similar design was selected, but of much shorter length, using small cast-steel balls as grinding medium. Considering the importance of the steel trade and the strategic position occupied in it by the Birmingham district, it may be surprising to many to learn that the first pig iron smelted with coke was made in Alabama on Feb. 28, 1876, although merchant pig iron had been produced in Rockwood, Tenn., in 1867 -a plant that is still in operation The heavy deposit of Clinton ore, extending from Pennsylvania into Alabama, varies greatly in accessibility, on account of geological changes such as erosion or anticlinal upthrow; it varies equally as much in thickness and in quality. The brown ores extensively scattered through the South also vary materially in quality—some are relatively low in phosphorus and high in manganese, and vice versa. The red ore varies materially in phosphorus, but the iron produced from this ore was always considered too high in phosphorus for treatment by the acid bessemer or open-hearth process and did not contain sufficient phosphorus for the basic bessemer process. Under these conditions there remained only the basic open hearth as a possible process; and for many years it appeared impossible to use this, because, with coke smelted iron, the silicon was too high to permit its use in basic lined furnaces. Various attempts were made, from time to time, to produce a low-silicon iron, by carrying high lime burdens together with harder blowing, but the blast furnaces of the South were not equipped with the blowing power of today and from 31/2to 5-lb. pressure was the normal working condition. The result of these experiments, therefore, was that a furnace would get a lime set or be hastily changed to avoid scaffolding, and engineers and superintendents were careful not to renew the experiments. After the development of the beds of dolomitic stone in East Birmingham, the carrying of sufficient lime to bring down the silicon in the blast furnace to the permissible open-hearth limit was successfully done at the Alice furnace in Birmingham, commencing July 22, 1895. In a very short time the entire output of that furnace was being sold to different Northern steel manufacturers, with a guarantee that silicon and phosphorus should run below 1 per cent.

A formulation is given for describing the rate of expansion of spherical bubbles rising in liquids the freeboard of which is evacuated. The computer solution of the resultant differential equations has shown that, for low freeboard pressures (less than about 5 mm Hg), on approaching the free surface the bubbles expand much less rapidly than predictable from equilibrium considerations. In other words, in this region the pressure inside the bubbles will be significantly larger than the static pressure in the liquid corresponding to the position of the bubble. These theoretical predictions were confirmed by experimental work, using two-dimensional air bubbles rising in mercury. The important consequence of these findings is that the expansion of gas bubbles in vacuum degassing operations will be a great deal less than expected from hydrostatic considerations. This would lead to a significant reduction in the available interfacial area and may explain the apparent poor efficiency of many vacuum degassing units. VACUUM degassing as a treatment for liquid steel has gained widespread popularity in recent years; the number of known installations exceeds several hundred at the present time.' Although much information is available on both the thermodynamics of the system and the overall performance of various industrial units, much less is known about the fundamental aspects of the process kinetics.2-4 The basic physical situation common to virtually all vacuum degassing operations is the interaction between gas bubbles (swarms of bubbles) and the surrounding molten metal, held in a container, the freeborad of which is at a low absolute pressure. Once formed (or introduced from an external source) the bubbles will ascend, due to the buoyancy forces, and, during this ascent, a significant increase in their volume will occur. This progressive increase in the bubble volume is due to two factors: a) the continuous reduction in the static pressure acting on the bubble during its rise; and b) mass transfer into the bubble from the surrounding molten steel. In a recent paper Richardson and Bradshaw developed equations5 for describing mass transfer into gas bubbles from molten metals at reduced pressures. However, in deriving these expressions it was assumed that the pressure inside the bubble was identical to the static pressure in the adjacent liquid. In other words, the volume of the bubble was considered to be in equilibrium with the pressure of the fluid adjacent to it. This assumption, thus their analysis presented, was thought to be reasonably accurate for most of the bubble's ascent; however, it was unlikely to be valid in the immediate vicinity of the free surface, held at a low pressure. It was pointed out in the discussion6 that the region close to the surface may be of considerable importance as both the driving force and the interfacial area available for mass transfer are at their highest value here. The ' 'anomalous" behavior of gas bubbles when approaching a free surface at low pressures was recently confirmed in a preliminary investigation by Szekely and Martins. ?1 Here high-speed motion photography was used to study air bubbles rising in a column of n-tetradecane with a freeboard pressure of 0.1 mm Hg. It was found that significant distortion of the bubbles occurred on approaching the free surface; furthermore, the expansion observed was much less than what one could expect from hydrostatic considerations, i.e., factor a previously discussed. It follows from the foregoing that a detailed study of these phenomena would be justified both from fundamental considerations and because of their potential relevance to technology. The purpose of the paper is to present a more realistic formulation for the expansion of a gas bubble approaching a low-pressure region, together with a comparison of the theoretical prediction with experimental measurement. An inert bubble will be considered in the first instance; it is thought that the understanding of the fluid mechanics is an essential first step toward the realistic formulation of the mass transfer process. This latter problem will be the subject of a subsequent publication. FORMULATION The Physical Model. Consider a spherical bubble, of initial radius Ro, rising in a fluid, having a density pL. Initially let the bubble be at a distance H from the free surface, and at a pressure Pgo, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy on foils at room temperature were used to investigate the ordering of Fe-Si alloys containing 10 to 23 at. pct Si. A certain degree of DO3 order was found in all alloys. With the exception of the lowest silicon concentration for which the antiphase domains could not be clearly resolved, the alloys have a domain structure of two-domain type with boundaries having 1/4a01<111> displacement vectors for less than 12.3 at. pct Si and with boundaries having 1/2 a0<100> displacement vectors for more than 12.3 at. pct Si. The alloys with 12.3 at. pct Si have a domain structure consisting of fine domains with 1/2a&apos;o<100> boundaries within much larger domains with 1/4a&apos;o<111> boundaries. The development of these structures can be explained by transition of the alloy from the disordered state into the B2-type order and then into the D03-type order by the mechanism proposed previously for the FeSAl alloys. The existence of the B2 structure in the lower part of the investigated concentration range reported in some articles can be explained by fine domains with 1/2a&apos;o<100> boundaries formed by several disordered planes within large domains with 1/4a&apos;o<111> boundaries. The ordered structure predicted by the theory —with practically no domain boundaries —is found in the alloys having 12.3 at. pct Si where it develops in the B2 structure region. ORDERING in Fe-Si alloys was first studied by phragmenl who found that beginning with 13 at. pct Si the DO3 (Fe3Si) superlattice reflections appear in the diffraction patterns. The equilibrium diagrams constructed later by corson2 and Haughton3 from various measurements proposed the existence of a homogeneous solid solution (a phase) in the range from 0 to 25 at. pct Si. Jette and Greiner4 and Farquhar et al.5 measured the relation between lattice parameter and composition and they considered the break in the curve at 9 to 10 at. pct Si to be caused by the ordered solution a"(Fe3Si). Glaser and Ivanick6 Determined critical ordering temperatures of the alloys containing from 10.9 to 27.9 at. pct Si from the measurement of the electric resistivity of quenched samples. In all cases the critical temperature was lower than the melting point and it was highest for 25 at. pct Si. Lihl and Ebel7 measured the lattice parameter curves at various temperatures up to 1000°C. The region between two breaks on these curves, corresponding to 10 to 12.5 at. pct Si at room temperature, was considered by them to be two-phase (a + a"). They concluded by extrapolation of the measured values that a" in the alloy having 25 at. pct Si is stable up to the melting point. Davies8 studied superlattice reflections in the X-ray diffraction patterns of an alloy containing 8.7 at. pct Si. He found the B2 structure and short-range order in the slowly cooled samples and the DO3 A. IMD structure in the quenched and annealed samples. This investigation first reports the presence of the B2 structure, phase a&apos;: in Fe-Si alloys. Meinhardt and krisement9,10 also found its existence in Fe-Si alloys by neutron diffraction. No order was detected by them in the alloy containing 8 at. pct Si. The onset of B2 order was observed at a composition of 9.2 at. pct Si. They found almost perfect B2-type order with partial DO3-type order at room temperature in the 10 to 12.5 at. pct Si range and almost perfect DO3-type order in the 12.5 to 25 at. pct Si range. They established the critical temperatures Tc of both the structures through measurement at higher temperatures. The critical temperature for the B2 structure was found to be always higher than the critical temperature for the DO3 structure of the same alloy. They extrapolated the curves of the critical temperatures and concluded that the alloys with more than 17 at. pct Si have the B2 structure up to the melting point and the alloys with more than 23 at. pct Si have the DO3 structure up to the melting point. The results of Meinhardt and krisement9,10 were confirmed by Dokken&apos;s measurement" of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity in the 10.8 to 15 at. pct Si range. On the other hand chessin12 detected by X-ray diffraction a considerably lower degree of order in the 12.7 at. pct Si alloy. ANTIPHASE DOMAIN STRUCTURE IN ALLOYS WITH B2- AND DO$-TYPE ORDER The ordered structures B2 and DO3 can be described in terms of a subdivision of the bcc lattice into four fcc sublattices with a parameter double that of the bcc lattice. Following Marcinkowski13 we will label them I. 11, 111, IV. The B2 structure in the AB alloy is formed by placing A atoms on sublattices I and II and B atoms on sublattices III and IV. In a non-stoichiometric perfectly ordered alloy having concentration (A) > (B), A atoms occupy sublattices I and 11. and A and B atoms distributed at random occupy sublattices III and IV. The DO3 structure in an A3B alloy is formed by placing A atoms on sublattices I, 11, and 111, and B atoms on sublattice IV. In a nonstoichiometric, perfectly ordered alloy having concentration (A)/3 > (B), A atoms occupy sublattices I, 11, and 111, and A and B atoms distributed at random occupy sublattice IV. As further shown in Ref. 13, two types of domains are possible in the B2 superlattice and the antiphase domain structure has associated with it boundaries with displacement vectors 1/4 a&apos;o<ll1> only. Four types of domains are possible in the DO3 superlattice and the antiphase domain structure has associated with it boundaries with displacement vectors 1/4a&apos;o<111> and 1/2a&apos;o<l00>. Bethe14 suggested on the basis of theoretical considerations that in a structure with two sublattices at low temperatures only one domain should be present in the whole crystal at equilibrium. Fracture under low-velocity free-fall and double impact and under slow compression have been investigated. The pattern of breakage and the size distribution of resulting fragments of sand-cement and glass spheres have been determined. Photoelasticity methods were used to simulate the stress distributions in free-fall impact in order to explain the observed patterns of breakage. Oblique fracture planes, occurring only in free-fall impact, develop along lines which coincide with the trajectories of maximum compression as determined by mathematical analysis. Breakage efficiencies for different modes of fracture were compared for both types of spheres. For the same specimen and loading system, static loading and low-velocity dynamic loading induce geometrically similar stress fields resulting in reasonably similar fracture patterns and shapes of fragments. This work had its origin in a desire to understand three fundamental processes involved in autogenous comminution: namely; free-fall impact, double impact, and slow compression. To simplify the investigation, it is preferable to reduce the entire multi-stage fracture process to its most elementary form; that is, to study products resulting from a single-stage operation, such as the breakage of a specimen under single fracture conditions. The goal of this research is to study the energy utilization in the single fracture of brittle specimens and to relate the pattern of breakage and the resultant fragment size distribution with the nature of the material, the specimen size, the manner of load application, and the rate of loading. Published works on single fracture have mainly been concerned with tests on large (> 1-in.) irregular mineral pieces, especially coal and coke. These were mainly friability tests employing a single blow on closely sized pieces. More recently, small mineral specimens in the sieve range and glass spheres have been investigated.5-7 Kick8 has reported free-fall and double impact tests with large large cast-iron, cement, and clay spheres. The establishment of a minimum breaking height independent of size in the free-fall impact tests, and the direct proportionality between the minimum work required for fracture and the volume of the specimen in double impact tests were used by Kick as an experimental proof of his classical law of "Proportional Resistances." In the present work, spherical shapes were chosen because of their simple body geometry and consequent impact and stress field symmetry. Because the study involves several physical principles in connection with brittle-fracture, it may be of interest in fields where the strength of materials is of importance. APPARATUS The equipment for the free-fall impact testing is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. This consisted of a massive (17 x 17 x 3-in.) hard steel plate onto which specimens were dropped and a specimen release mechanism which could be set at any desired height up to 10 ft above the plate so that the impact velocity could be varied up to about 25 ft per sec. Double impact breakage is characterized by two points of loading situated at opposite poles. For this mode of breakage the apparatus was modified (Figs. 3, 4 and 5) so that a falling mass provided an impact of predetermined magnitude on a specimen resting on the plate. A spring-loaded device operated immediately after fracture to arrest the falling mass and to record its residual kinetic energy. Precautions were taken to avoid secondary breakage. Slow compression tests were performed on a conventional hydraulic testing machine, the specimen being held between two hardened parallel bearing blocks. In the case of glass spheres, carbide bits were used. Photoelasticity studies were performed on two-dimensional models held in a loading frame equipped with a force gauge (Fig. 6). The models were viewed in a polariscope and isochromatic fringe patterns were recorded photographically. SPECIMENS Sand-Cement Spheres: A series of sand-cement spheres were prepared by molding in spherical glass flasks.

The development, by the mechanism of volume diffusion, of a grain boundary groove on an interface separating a solid phase and a saturated fluid phase is calculated under the following assumptions: 1) isotropy of the interfacial free energy &apos;s, 2) applicability of the Gibbs-Thompson formula relating curvature and chemical potential, 3) a nearly planar groove surface. The groove profile is found to have a .fixed shape and linear dimensions that are proportional to (time)1/3. The constant of proportionality is evaluated and involves ?s in such a way that the latter my be evaluated from grooving kinetics. A grain boundary that intersects an interphase interface will tend to produce a groove along the line of intersection (Fig. 1). The ultimate motivation for the formation of the groove is the reduction in interfacial free energ that occurs as the grain boundary contracts. Smith has discussed the way in which the free energy of the interfaces determines their dihedral angles at the groove root and has given a detailed analysis of the effect of the dihedral angles upon the nature the microstructures developed in polyphase alloys. Herring2 has extended the considerations to the case in which the free energy of an interface depends on its orientation and has thus added torque terms to the condition for interface equilibrium. Although the grain boundary and the interphase interface may quickly achieve the proper equilibrium angles where they intersect, as determined by the balance of equivalent tensions and torques,"2 the groove will generally continue to grow (though with decreasing speed). Thermodynamically, this continued growth reflects the fact that the lowest free energy cannot be achieved until the entire grain boundary has been eliminated; mechanistically, the growth occurs in response to inhomogeneities of chemical potential that are caused by the constraint of fixed dihedral angles at the groove root. The latter point is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows that atoms* near the groove are on the convex side of a cylindrically curved surface and therefore have a higher chemical potential than atoms on the flat interface beyond. Thus atoms tend to leave the curved groove shoulders and force the groove to deepen. When both phases are solid additional chemical potential gradient may arise from whatever strain fields are necessary to insure continuity of material across the interface. In the discussion that follows, this complication due to strain will not occur since we always assume one phase to be a fluid and the other a solid. The transport processes that may operate to permit growth of the groove are surface (interface)* diffusion, volume diffusion in the phase on either side of the interface, and evaporation-condensation when one phase is gaseous. (Also a melting-freezing process is responsible for groove enlargement on a solid-melt interface as discussed in Sec. VI). The theory of grain boundary grooving has been discussed in detail for the processes of surface diffusion and of one type of evaporation-condensation.3&apos;4 The theoretical predictions for the mechanism of surface diffusion have been confirmed in an experimental study of grooving kinetics in copper.5 In this paper, the theory of groove development by volume diffusion will be presented. Volume diffusion can occur either by atomic migration in the solid S or by diffusion of S atoms in the fluid phase, or solvent, adjacent to the groove surface. As discussed in Sec. V, volume diffusion in the solid should be less important than surface diffusion in forming a groove. Apart from verifying this statement then, the main interest of the present analysis centers on diffusion in an external solvent. The solvent may be either a liquid (e.g., water, or-

In a few places attempts have been made to introdnce some means of delivering heat from a central station. Probably Pittsburgh, through the advantages derived from its almost inexhaustible supply of natural gas, has made a more wide-spread success in this direction than any other city. From the gas-wells in the vicinity of that town an enormous supply of natural gas can readily be obtained at a pressure sufficient to force it many miles from its source and to distribute it to all consumers. Obviously, very few places have such natural advantages, and some other means must be devised, if it is desired to furnish heat in a location not supplied with gas-wells. The Golden Sunlight mine began full-scale operations in February 1983 with a conventional open-pit mine supplying 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) of milling ore. After crushing and grinding, the ore is leached with cyanide solution in large agitation tanks. Soluble gold values are removed from the sand portion of the leached ore with five stages of countercurrent washing cyclones. After thickening of the cyclone-wash overflow slurry, the gold is recovered in activated carbon with a six-stage carbon-in-pulp circuit and a five-stage upflow carbon column circuit. Pressure stripping, carbon reactivation, electrowinning, and refining complete the gold recovery process.

There are many solution mining operations that use solar ponds as a mineral recovery step. Other locations in the world are now under investigation to recover minerals by solution mining but require the cheap energy of solar ponds to make the recovery viable. This paper shows a step-by-step material balance system that can be used in both simple and complex solar ponds. Use of this system will help the engineer determine if solar ponding efficiency can be improved or if solar ponding will work at all with a given set of conditions. Even the most complicated solar pond can be reduced to six flow streams. These are (1) feed, (2) exit, (3) leakage, (4) entrainment, (5) salts, and (6) evaporation. The equations developed in this paper will allow the solar pond engineer to easily evaluate the effect of each of the flow streams on the mineral production of a pond or pond complex.

RAPIDLY rising world demand for mineral products has accelerated depletion of the more readily accessible ores, particularly those of premium grade. Operations must proceed at a faster rate to deeper horizons, where there are problems of ground control that restrict economic recovery of the mineral and introduce new hazards to mine personnel. For some of the new Canadian mining fields severe problems of ground stress are still in the future, but much of Canada&apos;s mineral output comes from well established mines that have reached considerable depths. It must also be anticipated that the depletion of premium grade ores will eventually necessitate mining low grade material at competitive cost, and unsolved problems of ground control can materially increase costs. Studies of ground stress phenomena in underground workings are therefore considered a present-day necessity, especially since these investigations must be a long-term effort owing to the highly complex nature of the problem and the difficulty of making full-scale observations. In recent years the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys in Canada has conducted such an investigation. This report of the work is primarily concerned with stress problems in some Canadian coal mines and, in particular, with mine bumps. Mines Branch investigations of this and related problems are carried out by a small team of mining engineers and physicists who, with assistance from geologists, pool their special skills in an integrated program. These Canadian investigations combine a field and laboratory approach. Since data obtained under contrasting mining conditions allow useful comparisons of ground behavior under stress, this article will present data gathered under a wide range of Canadian coal mining conditions. Two contrasting longwalls in eastern Canada will be discussed and two dissimilar pillar extraction operations in western Canada. Locale of Observations In eastern Canada observations are being made in the collieries at Springhill, Nova Scotia. The district&apos;s No. 2 mine, which has a history of bump occurrences dating back to 1917, is currently being worked at a depth of 4200 ft. The mining method is longwall retreating along the strike and the practice is to retreat three walls in line, each about 350 ft long. There is no machine cutting or shooting—the coal is hand-picked and hand-loaded onto face conveyors. There are three rows of hardwood chock block supports parallel to the coal face. These supports are built during the two daily coal loading shifts, and the rear line is withdrawn during the midnight shift. The goaves are partially packed by stone midwalls 12 ft wide which are built forward daily in step with the face advance. The seam dips at 15° and averages 9 ft of strong, well cleated bituminous coal enclosed in competent beds of shales, sandy shales, and sandstones of Carboniferous age. The bumps rarely disturb the retreating longwall faces but manifest themselves as violent upthrusts of pavement in the levels leading to the walls. SUMMARY ONE of the important reserves of manganiferous iron ore is at Boston Hill, near Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of a faulted block of gently dipping Lower Paleozoic shale, dolomite, limestone and sandstone, which have been intruded by a roughly circular mass of quartz-bearing monzonite porphyry and subordinate dikes. From a noselike protuberance of the intrusion radiate many premineral faults, which have localized much of the hypogene mineralization. Three important stages of hypogene mineralization can be recognized: (1) mesitite, a manganiferous iron magnesite, (2) quartz sulphides, and (3) barite-galena. The carbonate stage is widespread but stronger near the intrusion. The quartz may have been derived from hydrothermal alteration of the igneous rocks. Barite-galena is most important in the Chloride Flat mining district, about one mile north, where argentiferous galena provided silver for the supergene ore. The hypogene carbonate, lean in iron and manganese, has been oxidized and consequently enriched by meteoric waters containing an excess of oxygen and carbon dioxide to form ore bodies of intimately mixed hematite and pyrolusite. The ore bodies, at one place attaining a length of 1600 ft., a width of 300 ft., and a thickness of 25 ft., are largely confined to areas of brecciation and to spreads from faults in Silurian dolomite beneath soft Devonian shale.

The phosphate pebble-bearing matrix in the Florida Phosphate Pebble Field has physical properties which make it readily adaptable to hydraulic transportation methods employing solids-handling pumps and pipelines. The abundance of water available, a practically flat terrain, low costs per ton-mile, and beneficiation of the matrix by agitation while being pumped have contributed to the popular choice of hydraulic transportation. Phosphate pebble mining in Florida, begun in the 1860&apos;s, first used high pressure water and solids-handling pumps for overburden removal about 1900. Removal of the average 25 ft of overburden was followed by hydraulic mining of the matrix, with 6-in. and 8-in. pumps handling 50 to 100 cu yds per hour being moved along the floor of the pit as they were advanced toward the face being undercut and slurried by hydraulic guns.

The following abstract of an unpublished treatise, prepared by me, on the geological formations and minerals of the State of Alabama, is deemed of interest to the Institute. This State, called after the river of the same name (which, formed by the junction of the Coosa and the Tallapoosa, waters, with its tributaries, more than half the State), is divided by its main watershed into a larger southern district, sloping south and southwest, and drained into the Gulf of Mexico, and a smaller northern district, sloping generally north and west, and drained into the Tennessee. Geologically the State may be divided (according to historical geology) according to the different formations it exhibits, among which I include the Azoic, the existence of which in Alabama has been doubted by some; or it may be divided (according to structural geology, as closely related to topography) into a north and northwestern, a middle, and a southern zone.
