calculation has been made of the standard deviations to be expected in the measurement of volume fractions by areal analysis, lineal analysis and four point-counting Procedures. The effect of experimetztal errors is not included. Our conclusion is that a point count using a two-dimensional grid will be the most efficient method of volume fraction analvsis providing the grid spacing IS coarse enough. The predicted standard deviation for such an analysis is shown to he in good agreement with that determined experimentally. A metallurgist wishing to estimate a structural property by means of quantitative metallography is often faced with a choice between several different procedures. In such a case, he will naturally wish to know: a) Which procedure is the most efficient in the sense of requiring the least effort for a given precision? b) For a given procedure, what are the conditions for maximum efficiency? c) Under these conditions, how many measurements are required to attain a given precision? It is our aim in this paper to provide at least partial answers to these queries as they relate to the estimation of volume fractions from measurements on a random two-dimensional section of an opaque specimen. The commonly used techniques1,2 for volume-fraction analyses are based on one or more of the following principles: i) For an areal or Delesse3 analysis: That the areal fraction of a three-dimensional feature intercepted by a random plane provides an unbiased estimate of the volume fraction of that feature. ii) For a lineal or Rosiwal4 analysis: That the fractional intercept on a line passing at random through a two-or three-dimensional feature provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. iii) For a point-count analysis: That the fractional number of randomly or regularly dispersed points falling within the boundaries of a two-dimensional feature on a plane, or within the boundaries of a three-dimensional feature in a volume, provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. The absence of bias referred to in these principles does not, of course, imply that the results of an analysis will be free of error, but only that the expected result is equal to the true one. Application of the foregoing principles provide the following six possible experimental procedures: a) An Areal Analysis—This involves the measurement with a planimeter (or other means) of the area of a constitutent intercepted by the plane of polish b) A Two-Dimensional Random Point Count—Apos-sible experimental procedure for this analysis is to superimpose a sheet of transparent graph paper on a micrograph, and then use a table of random numbers to select coordinates for the points. c) A Two-Dimensiotuzl Systematic Point Count-Similar to b) except that the points are distributed in a prescribed manner, usually at the corners of a lattice superimposed on a micrograph or the screen of a projection microscope. d)A Lineal Analysis—A measurement of the fractional line length intercepted. It is usually performed by traversing the specimen under the cross hairs of a microscope and recording the distance travelled in each constituent. e) 4 One-Dimensional Random-Point Count— This could be performed by traversing the specimen with stops at random intervals to identify the constituent then present under the cross hairs. f) A One-Dimensionul Systematic Point Count— Similar to e) except that the traverse is stopped at prescribed (usually equal) intervals. It will be noted that the point-counting procedures b) and c) can be regarded as methods of estimating the areal fraction. Similarly, e) and f) are indirect methods of making a lineal analysis. All of the six procedures described above involve at least one stage of sampling. Thus, quite apart from any experimental errors, there will always be a statistical uncertainty associated with the final results. It is with the calculation of this uncertainty that we will be concerned. To avoid unnecessary repetition, the statistical relationships that will be used in the calculations are collected together in the appendix. For a fuller discussion reference should be made to one of the many textbooks5,6 on statistics. For symbols relating to the specimen structure we will follow as far as possible the terminology used by Smith and Guttman.7

The rate of FeO and MnO reduction from silicate and aluminate slags by carbon-saturated iron is dependent on both slag composition and temperature. Owing to variable stirring rules during- the course of reaction, the reduction processes occur in two stages in stationary graphite crucibles. In the first stage the slirring caused by CO evolution results in forced convection conditions in the slag. As the boiling action subsides during reduction, the flow conditions within the system become those defined by natural convection. Analysis of the data by an unsteady-state penetration model indicates that the rate of reduction is controlled by the rate of cocur-rent flow of' cations and anions from the bulk slag to the interface during both stages of reduction. The hearth reactions of the blast furnace have been extensively investigated from the viewpoint of equilibrium by deductions from controlled laboratory experiments. However, the literature contains relatively few studies that have been directed toward the area of slag-metal reaction kinetics, and the majority of these have been concerned with the rate and mechanism of sulfur transfer between iron and slag. More recently, attention has turned to the kinetic factors in the reduction of oxides from liquid slags. One of the first investigations in this field was conducted by Dancy1 on the reduction of pure liquid FeO and pure liquid Fe3O4 by carbon-saturated iron. The integrated form of the rate equation indicated that the reduction of FeO was of the first order up to 80 pct reduction. Over the initial 30 pct of reduction, the magnetite reaction was also interpreted as a first-order process. The rates of reaction were extremely rapid as indicated by a 30 pct reduction of the liquid magnetite in a time interval of about 1 to 2 sec. Phil-brook and irkbbride' studied the reduction of FeO from a lime-alumina-silica slag by carbon-saturated iron and solid graphite in stationary crucible assemblies. With the use of the differential form of the rate equation, the rate of the reduction reaction was found to be proportional to the second power of the concentration of the reactant FeO for both the slag-metal and slag-graphite reactions. These authors presented a number of comments in an effort to explain the difference between the molecularity of the above reaction and the observed second-order relation. One such argument, recently extended by Wagner,3 was that the rate-limiting step may well be one of transport control. A complete discussion of the proposed mass-transport control mechanism of this reduction reaction will be presented in a later section of this paper. Kinetic studies of the reduction of other oxide species, namely chromous oxide, titania, and silica, have also been reported. McCoy and philbrook4 used rotating crucible assemblies to investigate chromium reduction from Ca0-SiO2-A12O3 slags. First-order kinetic law was obeyed for the slag-metal reduction reaction as determined by the integration method of data analysis. Due to scatter of the data, any dependence of the rate constant on temperature or slag composition was obscured. Concentration-time data for the reduction of titania from blast-furnace type slags under reducing conditions were obtained by Delve, Meyer, and Lander.' The data were too few, however, for a formal kinetic interpretation. Kinetic data for the very slow reaction of silica reduction have been observed by McCoy and Philbrook6 and Fulton and chipman.7 The former experimenters found the reaction-rate constant for silica reduction by carbon-saturated iron to be 20 to 60 times less than the rate constant for chromium reduction. In their work on the reduction of SiO2 in mechanically stirred systems, Fulton and Chipman also found small values for the specific reaction rate and derived a high value for the energy of activation for the reaction. In both of these investigations, the reduction process was assumed to follow first-order behavior. schuhmann8 proposed that the rate-limiting step in this reaction is the diffusion of oxygen from the interface through a boundary-layer film to the bulk metal phase, and Rawling and Elliott9 have reported experimental confirmation of this hypothesis for temperatures below 1600°C. Turkdogan et a1.10 have also concluded that the rate of reduction of silica is a slow process and controlled by the diffusion of oxygen in the metal, but only in the absence of carbon monoxide bubbles at the slag-metal interface. In the presence of bubbles, achieved either by injecting carbon monoxide at the slag-metal interface or by blowing it through the metal and slag, these investigators found a rather rapid reduction of silica which appeared to be controlled by an interfacial reaction involving the de-sorption of silicate ions from the slag-metal interface to the metal phase as silicon and oxygen atoms. A melting process was developed by which high purity electrolytic uranium crystals can be converted into sound ingots without serious contamination. Careful preparation of the crystals, melting in a high vacuum, and directional solidification led to a metal of better than 99.993 wt pct purity. The metallographic examination showed a substantially clean metal with only residual amounts of a second phase which responded to heat treatment. The density of high purity uranium is 19.05 g per cu cm. FOR the study of the fundamental properties of uranium and its alloys, a base metal of high purity is needed, and an investigation was started at Argonne several years ago to examine various methods of preparing high purity uranium. Early success was achieved by the fused salt electrolysis process in preparing high purity metal in crystal form,' and the problem became that of melting the crystals into ingots without contamination. The electrolytic crystals contained a few ppm of heavy metals, less than 15 ppm C, and large quantities of potassium and lithium in the form of trapped fused salt electrolyte. On melting in vacuo in magnesia or urania crucibles, the metal picked up considerable quantities of carbon and some iron, copper, and silicon but lost most of the potassium and lithium. It was not metallographically clean, and much research work was necessary to determine the optimum melting conditions for minimum contamination. This work has resulted in the development of a melting procedure by which sound ingots can be prepared with only a limited contamination by carbon. In the section entitled "Melting of the Electrolytic Metal," the equipment and processes that have been developed for melting the electrolytic crystals are described in detail. The "Metallography" section is devoted to the metallography of high purity uranium, and the section "Density of High Purity Uranium" contains the first property measurement on high purity uranium—a density determination. Melting of the Electrolytic Metal Apparatus—Melting and Vacuum Equipment: Uranium may be melted in either resistance or induction-type electric furnaces. Resistance heating was found to be preferable to induction heating for melting down the electrolytic crystals, for several reasons: Although induction heating permits fast heating, this advantage cannot be utilized when crucibles with limited thermal shock resistance are used. Temperature control of induction-heated melts is poor, and the stirring effect increases the rate of contamination of the melt from the crucible, slag, or the furnace atmosphere; liquation and controlled solidification are difficult to carry out. Because of these objections, resistance heating was chosen. A 10 kw Globar resistance furnace of low heat capacity permitted uniform heating of a uranium charge to its melting point in 45 min. The furnace was insulated with a removable aluminum shield so that, after melting and removal of the shield, the furnace could be quickly cooled to room temperature. The furnace was equipped with an apparatus for directional solidification; see Fig. la. The crucible was suspended in the center of the furnace; and when the melting was complete, the crucible was slowly lowered into the cold end of the furnace tube. Solidification took place upward from the bottom; and when the rate of lowering was small, a sound ingot free from sink holes and shrinkage cavities was produced. To remove the large quantities of gas contained in the electrolytic crystals, melting in a high vacuum is mandatory. While, from the standpoint of contamination, melting in a highly purified argon atmosphere appeared feasible, lithium and potassium removal proved less efficient under such conditions. Also, a vacuum-melted ingot has a cleaner surface than one melted in an inert atmosphere. The vacuum system must be of very high pumping speed and leak tight so that a vacuum of less than 2x10-7 mm Hg is attainable when the system is pumped down cold. The system must have a high pumping speed, so that the pressure maximum which may rise to 1x10-4 mm during heating can be quickly reduced

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. Even to outline the results of recent prospecting activity in Ontario would be a big undertaking, but it would be timely and, I hope, interesting to Institute members to review some generalities regarding the work of the prospector and then to discuss in some detail the growth of Ontario's most promising prospect area, the Swayze district, where serious mining operations are already under way. Probably no one writing about prospectors and pros¬pecting can resist hoping that his article will not reach the eyes of a certain portion of the uninformed general public and cause a further influx of "prospective prospectors" into any given area. A RESPONSIBLE steel executive recently declared that scrap shortages, despite fantastic prices reaching up to $50 per ton, are responsible for the loss of 140,000 tons of steel a month and that in March 1947 alone 25 more steel furnaces could have been operating were it not for scrap scarcities. His answer to this serious situation was to ask for a speedier flow of scrap and also abolition of Government control over pig iron distribution. It would be more logical, perhaps, if an answer to this growing problem of scrap deficiency were sought within the steel industry itself. As long ago as 1933, L. B. Lindemuth, a consulting steel metallurgist, warned the steel industry that a shortage of scrap was inevitable and that beyond 1938, adequate supplies for open-hearth furnaces could not be expected. The outbreak of war, with consequent phenomenal demands on the industry, accelerated production of steel and further worsened the scrap situation. Today we are suffering from a condition which could have been prevented had the industry been more far-seeing and provided for an inevitable contingency. However, better late than never, and measures can now be taken to alleviate permanently scrap shortages in the future. This can be done by greater utilization of heavy sinter which experience proved is an excellent substitute for scrao and lump ore.

THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the inter-section of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow, 2 Elm,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

MICROSCOPIC. rnetallography has been exploited quite well enough to bring about a very general understanding that the typical metal or alloy is composed of minute crystalline particles blended into a coherent microstructural mosaic. One does not have to be a specialist in metallography to realize that the properties of such an aggregate are essentially a summation in appropriate form of individual effects derived from the shape, size, placement or orientation and cohesive characteristics of the component particles. It is clearly of great importance to consider the various forms of discontinuity which may occur at the boundaries between these crystalline particles. When a number of 'particles each possessing the same orderly arrangement of atoms are brought together into a close-fitting system of purely haphazard contacts, not unlike a handful of snowflakes compacted into a snowball, the particles are said to possess random orientation. There are no generally accepted views concerning the arrangement of the atoms or the constitutional reaction between atoms where one crystal meets another, but these contact regions are characterized by strength rather than weakness and it is customary to require the presence of many rather than few boundaries in preparing metal for useful service. Under certain circumstances all of the particles in a metal may be nearly alike in orientation. Other general tendencies of orientation may be associated with particular forms of mechanical and thermal treatment. In contrast with these cases of fortuitous or statistical diversity of orientation, we often find adjacent particles united along a plane which possesses a grouping of atoms belonging equally well to both structures. This, of course, determines a fixed relationship between the two orientations and it is always possible to derive one from the other by some form of rotation or reflection prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure under consideration. Particles united in this manner are known as twin crystals although the term refers to the form of association rather than the number of individuals concerned.

A numerical method of solving the partial differential equations which describe the one-dimensional displacement of oil by gas has been presented. Possible extension of the method to treat multidimensional flow is discussed, and the limitations of this extension are indicated. Using this method, it is possible to allow for the existence of a gas cap, the presence of any number of gas-injection or oil-production wells and the evolution of dissolved gas from the oil. It is also possible to allow for variation in the cross-sectional area, elevation, porosity and permeability of the reservoir. The influence of relative permeability and the force of gravity in the direction of flow upon the displacement is considered. The influence of capillary pressure upon the flow and the effect of gravity in the direction perpendicular to flow are neglected. The physical properties 01 the fluids are considered to be Junctions of pressure only, and equilibrium between contiguous phases is assumed. The numerical calculations can be readily carried out by the use of a digital computer. Several example analyses have been performed using the IBM 704 computer, and about one-third of an hour of computing time was required per case. Reservoir behavior predicted by use of this numerical method was compared to data obtained by other methods for three cases — complete pressure maintenance, dissolved-gas drive and gas-cap drive. The independent solutions to these problems were obtained by analytical solution, laboratory experiment and field data, respectively. Agreement of the numerical solution with data from these sources was good; this agreement establishes the convergence and accuracy of the numerical method. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs can be produced by any one of several alternative programs. When a reservoir is produced by primary methods, production economics can be influenced by controlling the number and location of wells and the flow rate of each well. An even greater influence may be achieved by augmenting the recovery of oil obtainable by primary methods. This can be accomplished by injection of fluids such as water, natural or enriched gas or a bank of light liquid hydrocarbons. Selection of the most desirable operation requires a means of predicting the reservoir behavior which will result from each of the several alternative programs. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical method for predicting the behavior of reservoirs produced by gas-cap drive, dissolved-gas drive or pressure maintenance by gas injection. The method described herein takes cognizance of phase changes caused by a decline or an increase (due to gas injection) in reservoir pressure, of the presence of a gas cap and of the effect of gravity on the flow of gas and oil. Relative permeability relationships are used to define the flow properties of the rock. Allowance is made for variation in cross-sectional area, elevation, permeability and porosity of the reservoir. Both the influence of capillary pressure upon the flow and pressure gradients in the gas cap are neglected. Whenever a liquid phase and a gas phase are in contact, they are assumed to be in equilibrium. The physical properties of the fluids are considered to be functions of pressure only. Therefore, if the method is to be used to predict the effects of a gas-injection program, mixtures of the injected gas and formation crude should-have the same physical properties as mixtures of formation gas and crude. The equations to be presented in this paper apply only to a one-dimensional case; therefore, they neglect the influence of gravity in the direction transverse to the flow. As is well known, this gravitational influence may lead to overriding of oil by gas. Consequently, this procedure as presented is most applicable to long, thin reservoirs for which gravity overriding is not important. On the other hand, the equations presented can be generalized to treat multidimensional flow and, hence, to consider gravity overriding, if desired. A word of caution on two points is advisable here, however. First, the authors have not demonstrated the accuracy of the numerical technique for multidimensional flow. Second, and more important, capillary pressure will often be of importance in multidimensional problems. Obviously, in such cases a generalization of the

Effect of variations in sinter feed composition on sinter strength, bulk density, re-ducibility, chemical composition, and microstructure were determined by sintering experimental samples on a production sintering machine. Increasing amounts of roll scale, ore fines, return fines, and blast furnace slag were most beneficial to feed permeability, sinter bulk density, and strength. Burnt lime additions improved feed permeability but were not beneficial to sinter strength or bulk density. Sinter reducibility was adversely affected by all additives. DEVELOPMENT of methods for evaluating sinter quality, which would in some way predict the behavior of the sinter during charging and smelting in the blast furnace, has been given considerable attention in recent years. In a previous investigation at South Works of the United States Steel Corp., standard sinter sampling and testing procedures were developed.1,2 By modifying the sinter sampling device, a method of sintering experimental mix sinter samples upon a production Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine was also developed. This technique afforded a rapid and controlled method of investigating the effects of the various raw materials and additives on sinter quality and was used in this present investigation. Since the beginning of the present study in 1953, the results of numerous sinter investigations have been published, most of which were concerned with production tests of iron ore sinter, both here and abroad. Three groups of investigators reported results of experimental sinter studies that were related to this investigation. Voice et al.3 studied the effects of controlled variables on sinter quality by producing and testing experimental Northants iron ore sinter using an experimental sintering unit. Mor-rissey and Powers' determined the relationship between iron ore sinter quality and the moisture and coke content using a small laboratory sintering system. Burlingame et al.5 studied the effects of "additives" upon iron ore sinter using a laboratory sintering apparatus and laboratory grade raw materials. At South Works, it was considered desirable to study the effects of sinter mix composition and additives upon the quality of a flue dust-base sinter produced on a production sintering unit. Extrapolation of controlled laboratory test data to sintering plant operation lacking such precise control is not altogether satisfactory. Therefore, the present study was conducted in a manner which approximated production conditions as closely as possible. The raw materials used were those commonly encoun- tered in the production of flue dust and flue dust ore-type sinters and these were varied within extremes encountered in this type of sinter production. Experimental Procedure The experimental sinters were produced from 100 lb mixtures of sinter feed. The principal raw materials and additives used, their particle size, and approximate chemical composition are listed in Table I. The mixing of the raw materials was accomplished by means of a miniature single shaft pug mill shown in Fig, 1. The use of the pug mill as a mixer was decidea upon after encountering difficulty in reproducing the mixing and chopping effect of the sinter plant pug mill with other types of available small mixers. The miniature pug mill was constructed, consisting of 31/2x2x1/4 in, blades spaced 3 in. apart along a 3 ft shaft. Preliminary tests were run with this small mixer to establish the proper rotation speed and the required number of passes through the pug mill to thoroughly mix and distribute all the raw materials in a manner approximating the production Pug mill- Although the effects of varying the mosture content were determined in one particular series of tests, the amount of moisture added was changed as the composition of the experimental mix was varied. Pure copper that has been allowed to oxidize at an elevated temperature in the air is found to be covered with two distinguishable layers of oxide scale. The outer of these, which is very thin, is composed of cuprie oxide, while the inner layer, comprising the bulk of the scale, is made up chiefly of cuprous oxide (Fig, la). If a small quantity of an alloying element, such as silicon, is present in the copper, silica particles are found disseminated through the cuprous oxide, deposited most abundantly near the metal surface, and, in addition, silica particles occur to a limited depth within the copper itself (Fig. 1b). It is this inner layer, composetl of oxide particles precipitated in a matrix of metallic copper, that is known as the "subscale" or the zone of internal oxidation. Under a low oxygen pressure it is possible to produce the subscale without the formation of external layers of copper oxides, thus leaving the metal surface bright and apparently clean while oxidation has occurred, in fact, to a considerable depth within the metal (Fig. 2). Although little is yet known in a detailed way of the mechanism of internal oxidation, the general nature of the process is evident. By virtue of the considerable solubility of oxygen in copper,' it is possible to bring the alloying element in contact with oxygen within the metallic solid solution. If the oxide of the alloying element is more stable than cuprous oxide, the foreign oxide may form and, since most oxides are relatively insoluble in copper, it will not long remain in solution, but mill separate as a precipitate. As the metallic solute is exhausted in the zone of precipitation, oxygen that is constantly being supplied at the surface diffuses farther into the alloy and thus produces an ever-thickening shell of subscale. The distribution of the reacting elements in the subscale and adjoining zones must be somewhat as indicated in Fig. 3. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation to be anticipated are thus: (I) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, (2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, (3) the possibility of the

Ultrasonic-atlenuation changes due to the formation of free dislocations have been observed during tensile tests of magnesium and LiF single crystals and samples of polycrystalline Results on the LiF and samples are similar: A preyield attenzration increase is observed which, however, be-corlzes smaller as the magnitude of the drop in load al yielding increases. This indicates that the yield point observed in these materials is due to dislovation rather than dislocation unpinning and that the initial density ' free dislocations must be low if the yield point is to be sharp,. Tests on the magnesium ere conducted at both 27" and 200C. Magnesium has the unusual property that the yield drop is larger at the higher test temperature and is accomplished by a decrease in attenuation. The latter is due principally to the temprovary pinning of detained dislocations by highly solute atoms. After strain aging., a stress as low as 0.3 bur suffices to unpin dislocations; microstrain measuements of sufficient sensitivity should. reveal plastic flow at stress levels this low IN another paper,' we describe the technique of simultaneously observing ultrasonic-attenuation changes and plastic microstrain during deformation of spher-oidized carbon steels. Changes of ultrasonic attenuation indicate damping effects caused by the oscillation of long, freely moving dislocation segments. Simultaneous microstrain measurements are used to indicate total dislocation motion. The dislocation-damping observations are most useful in the study of the early stages of deformation where the dislocation density is low and the plastic strain is small and relatively difficult to measure. Particularly interesting results are found in materials which display sharp yield points. Observations of these phenomena are reported here for three materials: single-crystal LiF and magnesium, and poly crystalline molybdenum. EXPERIMENTS Dislocation-damping effects were observed by measuring changes in acoustic attenuation with the ultrasonic-pulse method. The end faces of each of the specimens were ground flat and parallel and a quartz 10 Mc per sec, x-cut transducer was attached to one face. The bonding agents used were: a) "Nonaq" stopcock grease with magnesium, b) beeswax with LiF, and c) salol with molybdenum. With the LiF, the best acoustic signals were obtained at 45 and 50 Mc per sec; all other measurements reported are at 10 MC per sec. Few persons outside of the foundry trade have any conception of the great variety of sands now regularly specified and furnished, nor of the differences in foundry practice frequently resulting from apparently minor changes in sands. Conditions in each locality where the sands are mined and prepared necessitate special equipment designed to perform the work efficiently. The description that follows of the foundry-sand producing operations is typical of the areas in New York and New Jersey, and particularly refers to the operations of the George F. Pettinos Co. A few years ago the so-called Albany sands were dug by simple methods and hauled by horsecart to railroad. Depletion of sand near railroad sidings and extended use of automotive power have appreciably extended the area from which sand is now being dug. It is not unusual to haul 5 miles to the railroad. As stripping is quite shallow, 6 to 18 in., and the banks of usable sand generally run from 12 in. to 4 ft., it is economical to work the bank by benches so narrow that the overburden can be thrown by hand shovel to the exposed bottoms. In effect the top soil goes back to where it was, but on a lower level. Consequently the general surface appearance of a mined acreage is the same as before. This condition is in fact cutomarily required when a farm owner sells his sand in the ground. After such replacement, in the course of 3 to 5 years the soil is no less fertile than it was before mining. The sand itself varies as to grain and bond vertically and also along the breast. No mechanical equipment has been developed to compete with hand shovels and no machine has as yet been devised that grades the sand as required. Uniformity of sand, as shipped, depends first, last and all the time on the man on the job. Mixing equipment can change the appearance of the sand and mask its lack of uniformity, but it will never correct wrongly graded sand, dug from the bank. Modern methods of testing are helpful in setting up standards against which the man in the bank can compare his sands, but a good bank foreman is the only assurance that the sand, as dug, matches the required sample.

INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also holds true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a 1 million st per yr (910,000 mt/yr) mine was rare, 3-5 million st per yr (2,730,000-4,550,000 mt/yr) mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This great increase in production, made possible through mechanization, requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend to- ward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw-coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics has contributed more than any other factor to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has added to the need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written ac-
