THE chance that a Howe Memorial Lecturer will be able to refer back to a personal contact with the distinguished metallurgist for whom this lectureship is named grows steadily smaller. I did not have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance, but I did receive from him in 1916, quite unexpectedly, a letter commenting on a paper that I had recently published27 on "Types of Prismatic Structure in Igneous Rocks." The paper was written for geologists and petrologists, but it had an application, naturally, to the crystallization of iron and steel in a mold. The letter impressed me at the time, and still does, with the breadth of Professor Howe's interests and his perseverance in keeping up with the progress of any branch of knowledge that had metallurgical connotations. SCOPE OF THE LECTURE During several years preceding the date mentioned I had worked in collaboration with Arthur L. Day and E. T. Allen8 at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, on the temperature scale as defined by the nitrogen thermometer at high temperatures. Later (1928-1947) I had the opportunity of helping to apply this experience to the pyrometric problems of the steel industry. Because of the range of its temperatures, the multiplicity of the methods used, and the variety of its purposes, pyrometry in the open-hearth process has always offered a fertile field for both research and development. I am therefore devoting an hour to the subject of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace, the furnace that makes most of our steel in the United States. I would direct your attention particularly to the choice of the first two words in the title of the Lecture. One sometimes hears or reads of the "temperature of such-and-such a furnace," as if it were a single, measurable, characteristic quantity. I need hardly emphasize to any one who has ever operated a furnace or a kiln that "temperature of the furnace" is a meaningless phrase. Even if we confine our attention to the space enclosed by the roof, walls, and hearth of an open-hearth furnace, it is doubtful whether any such space has ever been so uniform in temperature that the phrase would have a meaning. In any furnace, there are many different temperatures, capable of being measured at many different places, and actually being measured for several different purposes. These pyrometric purposes, methods, and results, if given in detail, would expand this lecture into a book on the basic open-hearth process. I must therefore confine myself to a statement of the range of temperatures as they have been observed in various parts of the furnace, indicating in a general way why they are measured, and mentioning the methods that are available without attempting to describe these

n approach to the study of the electrical properlies of drilling muds, their cakes and their filtrates was made by treating the drilling fluid as a porous medium. Lluring this study it was found that the weight pararneter was omitted from previous investigations on electrical properties. Patnode in 1949 made a similar approach to ,his investigation. His work showed that there was a variation of resistivity relationships with per cent Puid present in a given suspension. This present study ex-tends Patnode's investigation to one in terms of the solids fraction of the drilling fluids. Previous investigations were made on low weight muds where the effect of the rolids fraction was obscured. The following equationr were fitted to data taken from 94 field muds and 47 laboratory muds (see Tables I and 2). The parameter, C, is a complex function of the solidr content, or mud weight, of a drilling fluid. It was also found that for all drilling muds examined. A nomograph is presented combining Eqs. I and 2. INTRODUCTION It is generally recognized that the materials present in drilling muds affect the relationship between mud filtrate and mud resistivities. However, most electric log interpretations proceed with the assumption that the mud resistivity and temperature are the only important parameters needed to obtain a filtrate resistivity or a mud cake resistivity. Lamont1 suggests that only average relationships exist between mud cake, mud filtrate and mud resistivities. He indicates that there is limited accuracy when these intercorrelated factors are used since no other measure-able variable is apparent. A previous paper by Patnode indicates that drilling fluids may be considered to be a system of fluids in solid particles which may be correlated electrically in a manner similar to rock solids. 1 he equation for the resistivity factor. F = (per cent fluid) is satisfied for a given clay type in water, but the value of m varies as different materials are used in the water. The resistivity factor is not constant for a given amount of clay. As is suspected it varies as the solids fraction conducts electrical current. Since both weighting material and clay solids are present in commonly used drilling fluids, it is expected that both materials contribute to the variation of the m factor in Eq. 3. An extension of Patnode's work is presented in this paper to show some of the interrelations which exist between the resistivities of mud cake, mud filtrate and mud. Use of these data enable a more accurate calculation of mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities if only the mud resistivity and weight are measured. EXPERIMENTAL The measurements of mud weight, fluid and solids resistivity, alkalinity, and chloride content of mud samples were made in this research. Mud samples representing drilling fluids from 94 Louisiana and Texas wells (Table 1) and 47 laboratory-constructed systems (Table 2) were used in the experimentation. The measurements of the mud properties were made both in the field and in the laboratory. The tests on the properties of weight, alkalinity and chloride ion were standard tests as described by API specifications. It is customary to regard the stress-strain relation as consisting of two parts, thc elastic region and the plastic region. The essential attribute of the plastic region is the presence of a permanent set, which remains upon removal of all stresses. The essential attribute of the elastic region is the absence of such a permanent set. Absence of a permanent set does not imply a linear relation between stress and strain, nor even a single valued relation. In fact, in no real metal is stress a single valued function of strain in the elastic region. The property of a solid in virtue of which stress and strain are not uniquely related in the elastic range will be called "anelasticity." The purpose of the present article is to review and correlate the past work upon the anelasticity of metals. The following paper by W. A. West124 describes investigations upon anelastic properties of iron. Many manifestations of anelasticity have been observed, the first as early as 1835 by Weber.l,2 In his experiments Weber subjected a specimen to a constant load (or deformation) for a given time, and then suddenly removed the load. He observed that most of the deformation suddenly disappeared, but that there remained a residual deformation, which disappeared only gradually with time, as is illustrated in Fig. I. The occurrence of a residual deformation which only gradually disappeared, Weber called the elastic after-effect (Elastische Nackwir-kung). An extensive review of the early work upon elastic after-effects has been given by Auerbach.3 Another manifestation of anelasticity is the dependence of the elastic constants---e.g., Young's modulus— upon the method of measurement. Thus, if dynamic methods are used, the measured value will depend upon the frequency of oscillation. Still another manifestation is dissipation of energy attending vibration, called damping or internal friction. One objective. of metallurgical science is the understanding of the plastic and fracture properties of metals in terms of their microstructure. Through such an understanding will come the ability to design microstructure to give the desired mechanical properties. A study of anelasticity will furnish an invaluable aid in the attainment of this objective. Such studies, when properly guided, yield information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the individual components of the microstructure. In order, however, that this type of information may be obtained, it is necessary that the experimental studies of anelasticity be interpreted by the appropriate mathematical analysis. This article, therefore, starts with the mathematical formulation of anelasticity.

GOD the Almighty has all things well ordered; in G particular, the effects and attributes of the seven planets whose reign and course (by the grace of God) determine for the most part not only our own life and death but also the growth and decay of vegetable and mineral life, so that the aforesaid planets generate and develop in a wondrous way the ores of gold and other metals in minerals, rocks, and earths. Specifically, the Sun develops the ores of gold, the Moon the ores of silver, Venus the ores of copper, Saturn the ores of lead, Jupiter the ores of tin and bismuth, Mars the ores of steel and iron, and so on. Since, however, no ore is made alone but each is made and wrought so that it is associated with other ores, it is necessary to know the art of separating the thus-made ores after they have become metals; as for instance, silver from lead and copper; gold from silver, and so on. [2]* If this is to be done usefully, you must be able to assay and must understand everything that is needed in connection therewith. It is obviously true and clear as light of day that some kinds of copper contain silver and some kinds of silver contain gold. In order that you may be able to separate them, so that each is obtained by itself and can be worked with profit and re ward you need first of all a true assay for the values of such metal. The assay, by revealing how great they are, whether the pure has been obtained separate from the worthless matter, and what the admixture is, advises you whether it would be worth the expense and the effort to start mining operations. A larger, slow-speed, under-loaded ball mill and hydraulic classifier have almost doubled grinding efficiency at the lsabella mill. TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore con-A centrators, the London and Isabella mills near Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.' Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge." While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill—ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed. In 1953 this study was reopened when plans were made to increase the Isabella mill output from 1150 to 1500 tpd. At this time the grinding circuit consisted of a 6x12 rod mill followed by a 6x12 ball mill in closed circuit with a 6-ft rake classifier. Another 6x12 ball mill and 6-ft rake classifier would have been sufficient equipment and would have been the simplest and cheapest installation. However, this would have offered no improvement in grinding efficiency or operating cost. If, on the other hand, the grinding operation could be converted to the London practice, by installation of one large 101/2x9x9 tricone mill and a 10-ft hydroscillator,2 lower operating costs would justify the additional investment. Economics: Table I presents estimates for the two schemes for enlarging the Isabella mill. In the first scheme, column 1, one 6x12 ball mill and one 6-ft rake classifier were to be added. In the second scheme, column 2, the existing small ball mill and rake classifier were to be retired and one large mill and hydroscillator were to be installed. Estimated savings from the difference in operating costs made an attractive return on the additional investment for the large mill and hydroscillator. Actual costs of carrying out this plan are tabulated in column 3b. It will be seen that these costs follow the estimates in column 3a very Closely. The return on the additional investment is calculated from the difference in the operating cost in column 1 and the actual operating cost in column 3b. This too come very close to the estimate. Power and Steel: Power requirements and steel consumption for the rod mills and ball mills, both actual and estimated, are presented in Table 11.

Explanations bused on theory and laboratory tests tire offered for certain unusual features of SP logs which may befog their interpretation, namely the "sawtooth" SP and the reduction or increase of SP with time. The sawtooth SP is frequently seen in SP recordings of thick, very permeable watcr. sands of the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Using SP data from a resistor network analog, this anomaly is explained on the basis of a thin shale streak within the sand. under which the invading filtrate accumulates by gravity segregcitiorr. The electromotive force then appearing across the shale streak gives rise to the anomalous SP. Reduction of the SP on successive logging runs Ira often been observed in very permeable sands when as indicated by the resistivity curves, the invasion depth has been reduced to practically zero. Laboratory results verify that this phenomenon may be due, to the presence of air electromotive force, across the mod rake when the fluids on either side differ in activity. Also, there is, in some cases; an increase of SP deflection on successive logging runs, because the emf initially present across the mud cake disappears as the somewhat saline water just behind the mud cake is progressively flushed out by the invading filtrate.. Field example and laboratory data are presented. I N T R ODUCT1ON Some unusual features are frequently observed on certain SP logs which make interpretation difficult. The purpose of this paper is to offer explanations of several cases of interest. All of these arc related to the conditions of invasion. The cases to be discussed are as follows. 1. The sawtooth SP anomaly which is frequently seen within the thick, highly permeable saltwater sands of the Louisiuana Gulf Coast 1. Reduction of the SP deflection from the usual sand line in very permeable sections when the depth of invasion is practically nil. As will be explained, such a reduction is attributable to a membrane electromotive force across the mud cake. 3. An increase of the SP with time just after the iormation is drilled as a result of progressive flushing of the invaded zone. FUNDAMENTALS OF SP PHENOMENA An explanation of SP phenomena must begin with the following basic ideas. 1. The SP log derives its character from ohmic potential differences in the hole produced by currents flowing through the mud.' These currents are driven by electromotive forces which are primarily electrochemical in origin. Other possible types of SP-producing electromotive forces may be disregarded for the purposes of this paper. 2. The electrochemical emf's associated with permeable formations are now understood to consist of liquid-junction emf's and membrane emf's.',' As schematically shown by thc battery symbols in Fig. 1, the liquid-junction emf, E,,,, exists at the contact between waters of different chemical activities, a,,,, (mud filtrate) and tr,,. (formation water); the shale membrane emf, lS.sn. exists across the adjacent shales whcn they separate waters of different activities. The emf's just cited are additivc in producing SP currents (arrowed circles of Fig. I). Thus, neglecting for the moment any possible membrane emf across thc mud cake, the total electrochemical emf, E,, will be given by their sum, where K,., -! K,q,, = 12 + 59, or 71 at 75 °F. In the log interpretations the SP of a thick sand (i.e.. the static SP) is generally related to the activities of the filtrate and formation water through Eq. 1. by setting the static SP equal to - E,.

Various other tests........................ 451 INTRODUCTION In the past five years, the reflection method of seismic prospecting has been developed to a high degree of perfection. Its success in mapping oil structure is due to the unique and definite nature of the depth data obtained. While articles on the principle and results of this method continue to appear in increasing number, there is virtually nothing published about the instruments used in this work. Several years ago, the writer started an experimental and theoretical investigation with the object of determining which characteristics would be best adapted to the problem at hand. As a result, an equipment was developed which has proved its usefulness in a great number of field tests. W. E. Pugh, now with the Empire Oil and Refining Co., joined the writer, in 1931 and 1932, in the laboratory experiments and field tests. In 1933, a paper was written on Certain Instrument and Field Problems in Reflection Seismology, and submitted to the Institute. The strain-amplitude- dependent part of the internal friction of alluminum after several ther momechanical treatments has been measured in the I-cycle range and at the ambient temperature. The internal friction in the outer layer of the torsional specimen us stress is computed from the experimental data. The curues obtained are analyzed in tevnzs of u coirzbinntion of AH and p, which aye, respectively, due to the vecersible unpinning from weak pills and to the plastic strain. Considerirlg the notion of thermally activated unpinning and repinning, it is shown that in our experimental conditions tlze dislocation lines acl as in the H model of Granato and Liiclze. It is also seen that the internal friction p which appears at higher- strains call be described by a simple expression which is in good agreement with our results. A qualitative interpretatiorz is proposed by combining these new types of intelpnal fviction. We define the internal friction 6 as half the ratio of the dissipated energy aW during one cycle to the maximum supplied strain energy W of a material submitted to a periodic stress. Experiment and theory show that internal friction varies with stress above a critical value.' Below this value the internal friction is strain-amplitude-independent and is often masked by an experimental background; so we shall call it AB. ~bove this critical value, the internal friction is strain-amplitude-dependent. This quantity is usually called aH:' and it can be explained as a thermal unpinning of dislocations.3-6 Furthermore, at higher stresses, a rapid increase of internal friction appears. This phenomenon could be caused by the plastic strain,' so we shall call it Ap. It seems interesting to us to study the influence of several t her momechanical treatments on the curve internal friction 6 vs strain E, in order to study the variation of AH and p with the concentration and the repartition of linear and point defects. NOT every organization on reaching the relatively ripe age of three score and fifteen can say with truth that its purpose and objects remain precisely the same as prescribed by its founding fathers. Of course, constancy of purpose may be something else than unalloyed virtue. It could merely reflect slavish worship of tradition, intellectual stagnation, or sheer inertia. On the other hand, it could establish the fact that the founders were men possessed of broad outlook, of prophetic vision, and of an acute sense of direction. In addition to charting the course with precision, the founders of the A.I.M.E. surely showed a flair for expressing clearly in a few words what others might say obscurely in many words. To quote verbatim from the "call" for the meeting, in 1871, the proposed organization was to have: "two great objectives: "First, the more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. "Second, the greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries." This text underwent some refining on several subsequent occasions but today the ultimate product, as set forth in the Constitution reads: "to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by all lawful means." The original call was dated "Wilkes-Barre, Pa., April, 1871," and was signed by Eckley B. Coxe, of Jeddo, and by R. P. Rothwell and Martin Coryell, both of Wilkes-Barre, each of the three subscribing himself as "mining engineer." The authors proceeded to explain briefly just how it was proposed to achieve these objectives: "In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed, as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries; and this object has been accomplished mainly through the medium of `Institutes,' `Associations,' or `Societies,' composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the periodical publication of `essays' or `papers' communicated to such societies by their members. MY first article on Canadian Gold, published in the Canadian Mining Magazine in 1911 expressed the view that the Hollinger mine would repay all the money invested and that other mines would be developed in this area. Many published forecasts have since been made. Quoting from the Northern Miner of Oct. 29, 1931: "It will be noted in studying the chart prepared by this engineer that his forecast for 1931 at $50,000,000 was too modest, as the output for this country this year will be closer to $54,000,000."

A study was made of' the effects of up to five additional solutes on the thermodynamic activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450" to 650°C. The experimental measurements were made in a multielectrode galvanic cell apparatus employing fused LiCl-KCl as the electrolyte. The solute additions included indium, lead, tin, cadmium, copper, silver, antimony, or gold. A range of positice and negative interactiotls with zinc was covered. The experinzer~tal observations were cowlpared with the activity coefficients calculated usitlg either Wagner's first-order Taylor series rnodel or a proposed second-order solution itrteraction model. hi general, the truncated first-order Taylor series proposed by Wagner gaue good results for "dilute" solutions (XBi > 0.90) contaitzing up to six solutes. The second-order model, which includes a second-order cross-interaction term, produced a slight improvement in predictions for solutions with XZn = 0.015 and a significant improvement for solutions with XZn = 0.050 hear the limit of Henry's law region). Seveval of the quaternary solutions studied contained a total solute content of 0.215 mole fraction, and fairly good success was achieved in predicting the activity coefficient 01- zinc. ThE study of thermodynamic interactions between dilute solutes in liquid metallic solutions has occasioned much recent interest. It is useful to recall in this respect that Wagner's well-known expression for the activity coefficient' is a practical application of the problem of representing a given function, i .e., In ?, by means of a sequence of polynomials. No specific physical model of a solution is involved in its use. As suggested by Wagner, a Taylor Series is used to expand In ? about a point of infinite dilution with respect to all solutes. The partial differential coefficients of the series have been termed "interaction parameters". Various authors'-6 have proposed formalisms for parameters, the definitions being designed to meet some specific experimental or physical condition. A usual assumption is that terms above first-order in the Taylor Series may be neglected. In that case, the logarithm of the activity coefficient is expressed as a linear function of solute concentrations. The resulting expression is presumed valid for any number of additional solutes as long as the solution can be regarded as "dilute". This assumption can be termed "the hypothesis of additivity". However, experimental tests of that hypothesis for quaternary or higher-order solutions have been extremely limited. Primarily such tests have been confined to studies of effects of added metallic elements on either the activity of carbon or the solubility of gases in liquid iron.7-13 The only known previous study of an all-metal system is the limited work of Okajima and pehlke14 on the effects of multiple solute additions on the activity of cadmium in liquid lead. The present investigation is a portion of the work to determine the effects of various solute additions on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450" to 650C It was shown for such ternary solutions that second-order Taylor Series terms could be evaluated at the same time as first-order terms, with no additional experimentation required. A second-order solution model was described which, under certain conditions, is a rigorous representation of solute activity in a ternary solution. (In the sense employed in this paper, the term "model", as distinguished from "equation", is taken to mean an empirical correlation or formalism, but not a hypothetical physical system per se.) Presumably such a model could be extended to produce a better representation of In ? in solutions of even higher order. The feasibility of a generalized Taylor Series approach to solution interactions and inclusion of second-order terms also has been discussed recently by Lupis and Elliott in independent work concurrent with the present investigation. In addition, they discussed empirical means of estimating certain second -order coefficients.17 The utility of such solution models rests on the ability of a truncated series to represent adequately the experimental facts in multicomponent solutions. Questions that arise include: Do the second-order terms really make a significant contribution? How far away from "dilute" solution may such models be applied? Are the types and varieties of the additional solutes important? among others. In order to provide some answers to these questions, an experimental study was made of the effects of two or more additional solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth. Comparisons were then made with calculated activity coefficients obtained using the previously determined ternary interaction parameters. INTERACTION MODELS As an example of the approach to defining activities in multicomponent solutions, consider the Taylor Series expansion for a quaternary system, i.e., three dilute solutes. Configurations of ferrite crystals have been found in a plain carbon steel which appear to have resulted from the nucleation of new ferrite crystals at the interphase boundaries of previously formed crystals despite the high carbon concentrations which necessarily develop at these boundaries. This phenomenon has been termed sympathetic nucleation. An attempt has been made to reconcile the occurrence of sympathetic nu-cleation with current nucleation theory. THIS investigation is one of a series on the formation of proeutectoid ferrite from austenite. From the viewpoint of chemical composition, this reaction consists of the nucleation and diffusional growth of crystals of carbon-poor ferrite within a matrix of carbon-rich austenite. The austenite adjacent to the austenite-ferrite boundaries will be greatly enriched in carbon, approximately to the value of the y/(a + y) equilibrium curve or its metastable extrapolation at the temperature of transformation. Those areas of austenite appreciably farther removed from the growing ferrite, on the other hand, will be relatively unaltered in composition, especially at the earlier stages of transformation. Since rates of nucleation are considered to decrease exponentially with decreasing supersaturation,' the frequency with which ferrite nuclei appear at austenite-ferrite boundaries should be negligible in relation to that at which they form in other regions of the austenite. During this investigation, however, many groupings of ferrite crystals have been found which appear to have resulted from the nucleation of ferrite at austenite-ferrite boundaries. This phenomenon has been given the name of sympathetic 71.1tcleation. A number of micrographs of morphological configurations caused by sympathetic nucleation will be presented, after which an explanation for this reaction will be proposed in terms of current nucleation theory. Some of the structures to be considered are composed of bainite, an aggregate of ferrite and carbide, rather than of ferrite. Since ferrite and bainite differ only in that bainite forms under conditions which result in the nucleation of carbides behind the advancing austenite-ferrite boundaries,' it will usually be unnecessary, for the purpose of this paper, to distinguish between the two reaction products. All studies were performed on an electric furnace steel (obtained from the Vanadium Alloy Steel Co.) containing 0.29 pct C, 0.76 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 0.005 pct P, and 0.007 pct S. The alloy was cast as a 150 Ib, 7x7 in. cross section ingot and forged into bars 2x2 in. in cross section. These bars were homogenized for 48 hr at 1250°C in an Endo-Gas atmosphere. The depth to which decarburization penetrated during this heat treatment was determined by chemical and microscopic analyses and the affected metal was removed by machining. Specimens for isothermal transformation studies were cut from the remaining material; most of these specimens were 1/2x1/4X1/16 in., though some with a thickness of 1/32 in. were prepared for use at the shorter reaction times and lower reaction temperatures. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1300°C, isothermally reacted for various times at temperatures ranging from 775" to 475 "C, and then quenched in iced water. The austenite grain sizes within individual specimens ranged from ASTM Nos. 1 through —4. A commercial heat-treating salt which was continuously deoxidized by an immersed graphite crucible served to minimize the loss of carbon during austenitizing; thick covers of powdered graphite and immersed graphite rods effectively prevented decarburization in the lead pots employed for the isothermal reaction treatments. The heat-treated specimens were sectioned and mounted in Bakelite. Following the completion of standard grinding and mechanical polishing procedures, the specimens were electrolytically polished with a Buehler-Waisman apparatus and etched in 2 pct nital. Experimental Results Rules of Evidence for Sympathetic Nucleation—On the basis of observations made on a single plane of polish, one precipitate crystal may be considered to have been sympathetically nucleated at the inter-phase boundary of another precipitate crystal when the following conditions are fulfilled: 1) The sympathetically nucleated crystal is not in contact with a grain boundary or a subboundary in the matrix phase. 2) The shape, size, and location of the crystal at whose boundary sympathetic nucleation occurred (hereafter termed the base crystal) and the crystal formed by sympathetic nucleation substantially pre-clude the possibility that the plane of polish em-ployed may have concealed the fact that both crys-tals actually nucleated at a grain boundary or a sub-boundary in the matrix phase.

Mineralized breccia pipes, because of their widespread occurrence and close structural relations to some of the world's great ore bodies, are objects of unusual interest for mining engineers and geologists. The literature contains many references to them, but it is questionable whether their genetic significance and economic importance have been sufficiently emphasized. The purpose here is to stress these features, relating them to the field facts, for the particular benefit of younger generations of geologists who, confronted with and sometimes confused by the growing flood of geochemical, geophysical, and other specialized research approaches, may be reassured that mappable field relations remain a foremost guide to a better understanding of ore deposits. A mineralized breccia pipe is a pre-mineral, breccia structure which has controlled the circulation and deposition of subsequently introduced mineralization. It is composed of relatively rotated angular or rounded rock fragments, set in a mineralized matrix. A pipe in plan outline may be circular, oval or approach polygonal form, with a steep to vertical axis proportionately much greater than its horizontal dimensions. The pipe is a steeply plunging, chimneylike mass of brecciated rock cemented with later minerals. Rock breaks in a variety of ways and complete fragmentation often occurs without rotation of individual pieces. A finely broken rock mass may fit into a tight jig-saw pattern, each fragment having mutually concordant boundaries with its neighbors. The result is a stockwork of innumerable reticulating cracks that, once cemented by mineralization, forms a complicated intersecting network of individually insignificant but collectively important seams and veinlets. Stockwork fracturing among its many forms takes the shape of domes of subsidence, fracture pipes, and related peripheral zones around and over breccia columns, or a combination of any of these structures. The significance of the mineralized breccia pipe is that it represents the extreme or climactic expression of a structural type which has a variety of mutations including subsidence domes, fracture pipes, and other stockwork zones all with related ancestry and similar to dissimilar characteristics. These allied and associated structures hold an answer to the fundamental question of the origin of many important ore deposits. CANANEA-TYPE LOCALITY FOR BRECCIA PIPES The Cananea district is characterized by an unusual development of mineralized breccia pipes. It is an important copper producer located in Sonora, Mexico, a short distance southwest of Bisbee, Arizona, and at the southerly limit of the great porphyry copper belt of the southwestern U.S. Cananea's rocks consist of Paleozoic quartzite and limestone capped unconformably by a thick series of volcanics including andesitic flows, tuffs, and agglomerates. These rocks have been intruded by a deep-seated granite with related basic and acid differentiates including dikes and plugs of quartz mon-zonite porphyry. Mineralization coincides with a northwesterly trending belt of these intrusives which break upward into and through the sedimentary-volcanic rock sequence. The district has weakly defined tectonic alignments in a northwesterly direction with subordinate intersecting fracture elements, but lacks important faulting or fissuring to provide throughgoing avenues for the upward circulation of mineralizing fluids. Thus, as will be discussed in subsequent paragraphs, the alternate way in which late magmatic and hydro-thermal derivatives of the parent magma reached the near-surface zone was by excavating their own breccia pipe channelways. There are numerous stages of breccia pipe development, related both in time and space to magmatic activity. A compilation of similarities and differences in various pipes suggests that proximity or remoteness of a demonstrable or inferred magmatic source provides an orderly genetic basis for describing the following representative types. Cananea Duluth Type: There are no intrusive rocks within or close to the Cananea Duluth pipe; therefore, the existence of any deep-seated magma that may have been related to its formation must be inferred. The structure is an oval-shaped ring 1200 x 300 ft in plan dimensions, cutting steeply across low angle, bedded tuffs, and other volcanics; it has been developed by drill holes to a depth of 2000 ft below the surface. The ore follows the periphery of the pipe and is composed of intensely brecciated rock which is cemented by minor galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, quartz, carbonates, and adularia. There is a definite vertical zoning of sulfides with less galena, continuing sphalerite, and increasing chalcopyrite at deeper levels. Within the interior of the ore ring, the brecciation becomes progressively weaker and coarser, the whole indicating relatively gentle slumping with broken, thin tuff beds pre-

Chemistry of the evolution of materials in contact with copper converter tuyeres is delineated by means of analyses of periodic punch rod samples taken during a converter cycle. Lining samples from known peripheral and end locations from three converters were investigated chemically and petrographically. One set of eight specimens representative of all lining parts was removed for study before completion of the campaign. Purely surface removal by slag action is minor. Slag filling of interconnecting cracks extending to the hot face results in a "stoping'' action which shapes the hot face contour and is a significant factor. Major wear mechanism is believed to be copper metal slabbbing caused by metal first penetrating joins and invading fractures or impregnating brick structure laterally from the joints. Importance of lining design and joint fit are emphasized. New laboratory tests are indicated. In the copper converter, molten matte, which is essentially a solution of iron and copper sulfides, is blown with air to produce blister copper. During the first stage of the process the FeS component is oxidized to SOz and FeO, the latter combining with a siliceous flux to form a predominantly ferrous silicate slag. Successive increments of matte and flux are charged, blown, and skimmed of slag until sufficient CuzS ("white metal") has accumulated. This white metal is then blown to copper metal in the final or blister-forming stage by the oxidation of sulfur to SOz and the reduction of combined copper to metal. The reactions of both stages are exothermic so provide the required heat. Temperature is controlled by cold scrap copper, flue dusts, smelter reverts, and so forth. Considerable vari- ation in practices occur depending on the type of converter, grades of the matte and flu, and other factors. Lathe and Hodnett's' survey of world converter practices gives much information on these variations and their effects on the refractories. Principles of converting chemistry are presented by Newton and wilson,' Ruddle,' and schuhmann. Most copper converting occurs within the temperature range 2100" to 2370°F although individual smelters report1 ranges from as low as 1700" to 2240°F to a high of 2200" to 2400°F. Temperature intervals reported from beginning to end of blow varied from 45" to 540°F. Average temperature range was 2030" to 2260°F and the average interval 250°F During the matte-blowing stage varying amounts of magnetite (FeO.Fe,O,) are formed in the slag as suspended crystals and also the liquid portion of the slag will contain, in addition to ferrous silicate, some Fe20s which adds to the potential magnetite formation if the temperature falls. This is a component of the so-called "dissolved magnetite" often referred to in the literature. Although the slag may contain minor amounts of CaO, A1209, MgO, and alkalies, the principal components are Fe0-Fez03-SiO,. The phase equilibria relationships of this system have been elucidated by Muan~ and Schuhmann, et a1.' These data and estimates of converting atmospheres by schuhmann4 are useful tools in studying slag behavior. It would appear that in many cases reported magnetite contents of slags are apparently higher than actually is present at operating temperature. This is probably because much of it is formed during slag solidification. The quaternary systems which have Mg-0,1,0,' and addition to iron oxides and silica are also of interest in considering the reactions of the slags with basic refractories. The formation of magnetite has an important interrelationship throughout the pyrometallurgy of copper (Mossman,' Gronningsater and Drummond," Ruddle,' Elwood and Henderson") but its presence in the converter particularly relates to operating efficiency and lining life in certain instances. THAT the domestic consumption of gasoline displays a marked seasonal variation, with a low in the winter and a high in the summer, is well known. It is logical to expect that the nature of the variation has itself been undergoing a change as a result of improvement in roads, general employment of closed cars; and growth of mass haulage; but so far as I am aware the change in seasonal variation has never been investigated and measured. It is the purpose of this paper to present the method and results of such an investigation undertaken as a contribution to the technique of planning operating schedules now so prominent in connection with the functioning of the industry under a Federal quota system. For the method employed I am in-debted to the suggestions and help of Frederick R. Macaulay', who kindly looked over the work sheets; and credit is due Barnabas Bryan, Jr., for assisting in the computations and the graphic work. RESEARCH is undertaken to find out what must be done when what we are doing now is no longer adequate. To accomplish this end, researchers apply the truths of nature to industrial evolution. A survey conducted with the co-operation of 58 universities and colleges offering degrees in mineral engineering was the basis for the table accompanying this article. This survey was undertaken with the object of presenting to faculties and student bodies, as well as to industry, all available information on what action the educational institutions of the country have taken to provide the properly trained researchers so vitally needed. A hoped for result is that the great variety of opportunities available will encourage some undergraduate students to continue in their field beyond attainment of a B.S. degree.

WE have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the first we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second, we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allotropic states of iron-a, stable below A2; 19, stable between A2 and A3; and 7, stable above A3-all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, but did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier was even led to think from some of our results that iron could very well be a rhombohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic. THERE have been eight different oil zones identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones are, from top to bottom, the Foix, difference of opinion over this nomenclature, with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the 'zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.
