The term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater inechanization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar inodel built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimenbions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein. Systematic data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. Introduction The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and sometimes tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as 'German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates applied to a nickel silver base behave more satisfactorily than those applied to the softer and less resistant alloys, and owing to the white color of the underlying metal the article will retain a pleasing appearance despite local failures of the plating.

The complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.l It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to he drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the 0 phase, "CuAl2." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact ?' in a high State of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. In these tests by Thurston and by Howe, the wires were rapidly loaded to determine the

RECENT work by the authors1 established the constitutional diagram of the gold-germanium system. Of particular interest in the simple euctectiferous system was the eutectic alloy at 12 per cent Ge, which melted at the very low temperature of 356°C. and had an unusually fine eutectic structure. It was of interest to investigate the effect of third components on the melting point, microstructure, and strength of this alloy, and in this work the effect of copper is discussed rather completely, with less complete data on the effects of silver, platinum, nickel, and zinc. No reference in the literature has been found on ternary systems with gold-germanium. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING As in the work on the binary system, gold-germanium, the germanium used in this investigation was the cyanide-reduced, 99.9 per cent product, produced by the Eagle-Picher Co. Fine gold sheet from Handy and Harmon, pure platinum sheet from the American Platinum Works, copper magnet wire from Anaconda, nickel wire assaying 99.6 per cent Ni, and electrolytic zinc were used for alloying. To make the alloys, charges of the pure metals were put in a graphite crucible and melted in an atmosphere of pure hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to about 1050°C., and the metal allowed to freeze in the crucible. Except with alloys containing zinc, melting losses were consistently less than a few milligrams. When zinc was a component, weight losses up to half the weight of the zinc present were incurred, and the alloy compositions were calculated by assuming the entire weight loss to be that of zinc. In all other cases the composition of the alloys could safely be taken as that of the charge. The ingots, as solidified, were segregated, the heavier primary phases being at the bottom and sides of the ingots and the lighter primary phases at the top, but by sectioning the entire ingot vertically for microscopic examination, this factor could be evaluated. Ingots for microscopic examination weighed one gram, and those for thermal analysis weighed three grams. THERMAL ANALYSIS In this work, the eutectic line composition and thermal arrests were desired, and, after microscopic exploration had established the position of the eutectic line at a given percentage of the third component, a thermal analysis was run at that composition. The method of thermal analysis used in the work on the binary Au-Ge system,1 a method particularly well suited for a small quantity of material, was used in this work. From the beginning to the end, the attendance and enthusiasm of the 119th meeting, which was held in New York, Feb. 17 to 20 surpassed all expectations. Besides the ten technical sessions, one of which was in conjunction with the American Institute of Electrical Engineering and one a session of the National Research Council, there were two memorial meetings, one for Dr. Raymond and one for the members who died in service; two joint sessions with the Canadian Mining Institute; and a meeting devoted to pictures of copper mining, milling, and smelting. Of the 732 persons registered, 119 registered in the Institute of Metals Division. Monday's sessions were devoted to the problems of industrial organization, the Institute of Metals Division, and to petroleum and gas. Among the special features of these sessions were the topical discussions on housing and. Americanization. Americanization, too, was the topic for discussion by the Woman's Auxiliary Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, nearly 100-members of the Canadian Mining Institute were present to discuss the possibility of bringing about uniform mining laws for the United States, Canada, and Mexico, to obviate the maintaining separate legal departments and managerial forces for the several countries; and to avoid the confusion which, it is said, has led to a duplication of effort and has sometimes created a barrier to international cooperation in mining. W. 0. HOTCHKISS, * Madison, Wis.-It was fortunate, in a way, that this subject of income taxation came up during the war when the government could appeal, on the basis of patriotism, to men of large, business experience to undertake the work of formulating this matter and practically donate their services. At any other time the government would have been unable to secure the necessary number of men of like ability. There is one thing that must not be forgotten. In all cases, except the very largest and most important, the application of this income tax law to a mine is going to be made by clerks whose salaries are fixed by a Congress that appropriated a half billion of dollars for a war purpose and provided that $4000 should be the highest salary paid in the adminis-tration of that great sum. The Congress of the United States unfor-tunately seems almost entirely unaware of the fact that men of ability and experience are worth money and must be paid adequately if proper public service is to be secured. While the formulation of the broad plans for administering the law have been in the hands of. men of unusual ability, we have the future to guard, and, if possible, the mining industry should see to it that the Internal Revenue Department is permitted by Congress to pay salaries that will enable it to secure men of the ability and experience necessary to insure proper consideration of the industry. Another fact to which I would call attention is the difference between the business and the economic, or economists', points of view as to what a mine is. The economists have properly, from their point of view, classed a mine as a wasting asset, but the average metal mine is not a wasting asset if it is a real mine. The economists are correct in a broad sense in that every ton of ore taken out diminishes the orebody by that amount. When it comes to the consideration of an individual mine from the business standpoint, the future of that mine rests on unfore-seeable events-the discovery of new orebodies or the development of old bodies beyond the point of probable expectations. Every going mine must develop new ore each year to replace that extracted, and, .during all but the last one or two years of its activity, actually does so. Instead of being a "wasting asset" such a mine, from the practical stand-point which must control valuation, is an "increasing asset." From

Solidification in a moving electromagnetic field was successful in altering the as-cast grain structure of steel ingots. The equipment is described and exerimental results are presented for several different alloys. Conditions for optimum grain refinement are described and an empirical design constant presented. The effect of the grain refinement on hot workability is briefly discussed. T HE grain structure of a steel ingot teemed into a metal mold can be defined by macroscopic examination in semiquantitative terms. For example, the relative volume of obviously differing structures can be estimated with the classic definitions of chill, columnar, and equiaxed zones. Experimental evidence has proven that the grain structure of an ingot is affected by changes in such factors as teeming temperature, rate of teeming, degree of turbulence, size of ingot, mold characteristics (including preheat temperature, design and coating), and composition of the metal (especially as it affects the range of solidification). Significant advances have been made in fundamental solidification studies; but the principles which have been developed are difficult to apply tothe complex and changing phenomena that occur simultaneously during ingot solidification. In particular, many attempts have been made to refine the as-cast structure of ingots, with special emphasis on the columnar grains. The formation of large columnar grains is generally considered harmful to the further fabrication of an ingot. It may also result in undesired ani-sotropic properties. However, columnar grains are not undesirable in all grades, or product applications, and caution must be exercised to determine in which grades and applications columnar grains are not desired in the ingot. Although the literature on the refinement of as-cast ingot grain structures is too vast in general to review here, it is noteworthy that such methods are additions of artificial nuclei, mold vibration, mechanical stirring or ultrasonic agitation of the molten metal, and controlled cooling and reheating during solidification have been tried with varying degrees of success. However, it is doubtful that any method of refining the as-cast ingot grain structure has been completely successful on a commercial basis. The purpose of

THE commercial production of electrolytic manganese on a small scale commenced in 1939. The writer made a short report on the progress of production and utilization in MINING AND METALLURGY for January 1941. Progress during the last two years, naturally, has been more rapid. In June 1940, Congressman (now Senator) Scrugham presented a proposal to Congress for an appropriation authorizing erection of a pilot plant for "the production of metallic manganese by electrolytic or other means." As a result of this, a pilot plant, having a capacity of a few hundred pounds per day was built at Boulder City, Nev. Subsequent appropriations permitted expansion of the plant to about a ton per day. Much has been learned in this plant about electrolytic manganese, and the product even in its small way has found war uses of considerable importance. Meanwhile, the Knoxville plant of the Electro Manganese Corporation, the sole commercial producer, was expanded to about 4 tons per day to supply needed material for the war program. Other proposals for commercial plants have not been favorably received by the War Production Board. The Bureau reported on one such proposal by the American Alloys and Chemical Corporation. PRACTICE AT BOULDER CITY The present practice, as carried out at Boulder City, which is being described in more detail in a current paper by the Bureau staff at Boulder City, starts with a manganese dioxide ore containing about 20 per cent manganese. Currently this ore comes from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas. The steps for the production of electrolytic manganese, in general, are as follows: I. The manganese in the ore is reduced to MnO. 2. The MnO is dissolved from the ore in spent electrolyte, which contains about 38 to 47 grams per liter of free sulphuric acid, 135 grams per liter of ammonium sulphate, and 10 to 12 grams per liter of Mn as sulphate. In the leaching step the manganese is built back up to 32 to 36 grams per liter of Mn as sulphate; the pH is adjusted to neutral by means of gaseous ammonia and passed through thickeners. 3. The electrolyte is purified by adding H2S, which precipitates the heavy metals. After filtering, ferrous sulphate is added to the solution and oxidized with air and the solution is filtered and clarified on a precoat filter. 4. The purified catholyte is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell using stainless-steel cathodes and lead-silver anodes. The current density is about 45 amp. per sq. ft. Current efficiencies of 60 to 65 per cent are regularly obtained.

SINCE the very early work on quenched structures, where the products of the martensite transformation had been recognized, this transformation has provoked much interest and study. Theoretically it was desirable to account for the extreme changes in physical properties resulting from the formation of martensite, as that information might lead to results of practical importance. Desirable information, therefore, was on the kinetics of transformation from austenite to martensite as well as on the physical constitution of the martensite. It has been known for years that certain steels quenched to room temperature will contain persistent austenite as well as martensite. Other important and now well- established features of the martensite reaction are the progress of the reaction on cooling only and the independence of Ar" with cooling velocities exceeding the critical velocity. These facts have been experimentally determined by various methods and investigators. Notable among the early investigators were Tammann and Scheill and Wever and Engel.2 Unfortunately, all investigators did not fully interpret their results, which, coupled with several investigations that yielded conficting results, caused a state of confusion that was not clarified until quite recently. X-ray investigations of martensite in steels3-6 indicate it to be a supersaturated solid solution of carbon in alpha iron. This supersaturation is evident from the appearance of a body-centered tetragonal structure with the addition of sufficient carbon. The dimensions of this tetragonal structure are alinear function of the carbon content within the limits of accuracy of the determinations. Slight tempering of tetragonal martensite leads to the destruction of the tetragonal structure, which is converted to a body-centered cubic structure. This phenomenon has precipitated a controversy concerning the nature and mechanism of the tempering of martensite. The facts in the case have been outlined by Epstein7 and more recently by Antia, Fletcher, and Cohen.8 The significance of Ar" on theoretical grounds is not clear, however, although considerable study has been devoted to its determination. The precise position of Ar" as a function of carbon content was first stated by Greninger and Troianos for steels covering a range of approximately 0.7 to 1.8 per cent carbon. The effect of alloying elements on Ar" has recently been the subject matter of investigation by various methods.

OF the many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one that has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. The many excellent textbooks of physical chemistry1 provide ample material on the principles of this subject for the student of steelmaking processes; yet with- out exception those texts draw the greater part of their illustrative material from room-temperature data. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a concise review of the principles of physical chemistry that have proved useful in studies of steelmaking and at the same time to present some of the data that are essential to the application of physical chemistry to reactions at high temperatures. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be ex- pressed in fairly simple terms. Many of the equations are logarithmic, and we shall use the symbols In X and log X to represent respectively the natural and the common logarithm of X. The two are related by In X = 2.303 log X. The binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of comprehensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-A~ili~r~ony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Ti11 These three systerrls are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. INTRODUCTION ASARCO Incorporated purchased the East Tennessee Zinc Mines of the American Zinc Company and commenced operating on November 29, 1971. Presently, three mines are operating producing 6620 t/d (7300 stpd). The ore mined is sphalerite which occurs In lower Ordovician carbonates of the upper Knox Group and occurs in open space and fracture filling. Orebodies range from 3 to 46 m (10 to 150 ft) thick with dips from flat to 20º. The mining method is random room and pillar modified by shrinkage and bench stoping. Like other mining departments, the mining group at the Tennessee Mines Division is constantly looking for methods to improve productivity and safety and to reduce mining costs. This involves testing new equipment, trying new ore extraction ideas and making mining plant alterations to meet changes in operating conditions. The areas of change that will be described in this paper are longhole raising, jumbos and LHD loading, shaft sinking, conveyor transport of ore and sublevel haulage developments. LONGHOLED RAISES Raise driving has always been a hazardous occupation for miners and today it is becoming more difficult to get competent people for this kind of work. This problem has led us to seek an easier, safer way in which to excavate raises. THe results obtained by pneumatic flotation throughout the country on all classes of ore, and the tonnage now being treated by this particular method, speak for themselves. Its advantages over the so-called agitation process are now established by facts and data from practicc. The comparative efficiency of a rapidly revolving paddle, as a means for aerating an ore pulp, and of a cyeloidal or turbine blower for the same purpose, would seem to be so obvious as to leave no room for discussion. Practitioners in this art are to be congratulated on the acquisition of the valuable literary contributions that have recently been made on the theory of flotation by Messrs. Ralston, Van Arsdale, Taggart and Beach, and others, and the very valuable and able articles by Messrs. Laist and Wiggin on "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont.," by Dr. Rudolf Gahl on the "History of Flotation at Inspiration," and by David Cole on "The Advent of Flotation in the Morenci District." It is not within the province of this article to attempt an answer to the various issues raised in regard to the theory, or to defend the one advanced by me a year ago. But since discussion usually benefits the profession, a reply will be made to some of the statements made by the last-named writers. CoMPABATIVE SENSITIVENESS AND ATTENDANCE Concerning the article, "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont.," by Laist and Wiggin, a little explanation is in order. It should be stated that, with the exception of about 24 days at the end of the testing period, the Callow experimental plant at Anaconda was not run under my direction. This perhaps accounts for some of the concIusions drawn on page 499 of the descriptive paper. The conclusion that the use of acid seems to be of considerable advantage, calls for some comment. While the tests conducted by the Anaconda Copper Co. do show acid to be of considerable benefit, this is a consequence of using acid sludge as a flotation agent. Pronounced porosity, decreasing with distance from the fracture surface, is found in the necked region of tensile specimens tested at room temperature or liquid nitrogen temperature. A hydrogen solution treatment followed by a quench prevents pore formation in tests at —196°C, but has little effect on tests made at room temperature. Reduction of area values at —196°C are strikingly improved by the same treatment, but show no improvement in room temperature tests. The experimental results support the hypothesis that strain-induced porosity results with hydride initially present or, in material containing less than 50 ppm H, with hydride precipitated by strain aging. ZIRCONIUM'S advent as an engineering material in nuclear reactor construction has brought forth many investigations concerned with the properties of this metal and its alloys. Some attention has been given to the ductility of the metal.1, 2 Particularly, the effect of hydrogen on the impact strength was noted," indicating a pronounced dependence of ductility on the hydrogen content and its distribution in the metal. Micro graphic:' and X-ray diffraction studies' have shown that a precipitated hydride phase causes embrittlement in zirconium,' which implies a distinctly different mechanism from that causing hydrogen embrittlement in steels."-' In the latter case, it is assumed that atomic hydrogen diffuses to rifts, where it forms molecular hydrogen under such internal pressures that it causes the rifts to enlarge, leading to fracture. Thermo-dynamic studies of the Zr-H system8, 9 also indicate that the internal pressure of molecular hydrogen would be too low to cause any damage to the zirconium at room temperature, and the formation of a zirconium hydride (d phase) is favored." It is noteworthy that this phase has a face-centered-cubic structure and nearly 18 pet larger molar volume than close-packed-hexagonal a-zlrconlum' Other features of the ductility of zirconium are the absence of a typical cup-cone failure upon tensile testing, a pronounced strain-induced porosity in the necked region of a tensile bar, Fig 1, and the associated spongy appearance of the fracture surface A tremendous improvement in ductility at liquid nitrogen temperature can be observed following a heat treatment that retains the commonly present quan- tities (10 to 50 ppm) of hydrogen in solution. Such tests show a typical cup-cone failure and the absence of strain-induced porosity, Fig. 2. The present paper reports results of an investigation into the causes of strain-induced porosity in zirconium. Room temperature tensile fractures of mild steel, aluminum, and titanium have also been examined for strain-induced porosity. In each case porosity could be detected, but the amount was orders of magnitude less than was found in zirconium. Of the three metals, titanium showed the strongest effect. Material, Specimens, and Preparation The greater part of this investigation was done on Westinghouse crystal bar zirconium, are-melted, forged, and hot-rolled. Chemical analyses of the hot-rolled plates are given in Table I, along with those of the Foote crystal bar zirconium used in this work. The specimens were machined from the hot-rolled plate (1550°F) of 1/2 in. thickness and subsequently heat-treated according to one of the treatments shown in Table IS. It is customary to regard the stress-strain relation as consisting of two parts, thc elastic region and the plastic region. The essential attribute of the plastic region is the presence of a permanent set, which remains upon removal of all stresses. The essential attribute of the elastic region is the absence of such a permanent set. Absence of a permanent set does not imply a linear relation between stress and strain, nor even a single valued relation. In fact, in no real metal is stress a single valued function of strain in the elastic region. The property of a solid in virtue of which stress and strain are not uniquely related in the elastic range will be called "anelasticity." The purpose of the present article is to review and correlate the past work upon the anelasticity of metals. The following paper by W. A. West124 describes investigations upon anelastic properties of iron. Many manifestations of anelasticity have been observed, the first as early as 1835 by Weber.l,2 In his experiments Weber subjected a specimen to a constant load (or deformation) for a given time, and then suddenly removed the load. He observed that most of the deformation suddenly disappeared, but that there remained a residual deformation, which disappeared only gradually with time, as is illustrated in Fig. I. The occurrence of a residual deformation which only gradually disappeared, Weber called the elastic after-effect (Elastische Nackwir-kung). An extensive review of the early work upon elastic after-effects has been given by Auerbach.3 Another manifestation of anelasticity is the dependence of the elastic constants---e.g., Young's modulus— upon the method of measurement. Thus, if dynamic methods are used, the measured value will depend upon the frequency of oscillation. Still another manifestation is dissipation of energy attending vibration, called damping or internal friction. One objective. of metallurgical science is the understanding of the plastic and fracture properties of metals in terms of their microstructure. Through such an understanding will come the ability to design microstructure to give the desired mechanical properties. A study of anelasticity will furnish an invaluable aid in the attainment of this objective. Such studies, when properly guided, yield information regarding the relation between stress and strain in the individual components of the microstructure. In order, however, that this type of information may be obtained, it is necessary that the experimental studies of anelasticity be interpreted by the appropriate mathematical analysis.
