Por ello, nace el proyecto SIP2000 donde optimiza el sistema de información para el mantenimiento preventivo de la planta de procesos en la mina Pierina. El proyecto comprende el desarrollo de tres fases: La primera fase comprende la definición de los principales equipos críticos que podrían afectar a la producción, asímismo la implementación y estandarización de redes de comunicación entre equipos críticos para finalmente desarrollar interfaces HMI que supervisen variables relativas a Mantenimiento. La segunda fase, integra todos los sistemas de supervisión y control de planta con los sistemas de seguimiento “online” de Mantenimiento (fase 1), desarrollando un solo sistema de tratamiento y análisis de información de planta; y la tercera fase comprende la instalación y el desarrollo de aplicaciones basadas en tecnologías Cliente/Servidor con base SQL, que finalmente proporcionan la información y los medios para realizar consultas que optimizan el seguimiento y toma de decisiones relacionado al mantenimiento preventivo/predictivo.

The structural design of a mine haul road involves the determination of cover thickness requirements above the in-situ or sub-grade material. The specification of these layerworks is a critical component in the overall road design process. Poor design often leads to premature failure of the road, safety is often compromised and productivity and equipment service-life will certainly decrease. Historically, the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) cover-curve design method has been widely applied to the structural design of mine haul roads. More recently, established mechanistic design principles have superceded the CBR approach to haul road design, using a multi-layer model to represent the various road structural layers. The structural design and associated layer thickness requirements are then determined following a maximum strain criterion. This paper develops a case-study evaluation of the CBR cover-curve and mechanistic design methodologies and through a comparative analysis of layerworks and materials, highlights how improved structural design can be achieved mechanistically.

The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) is a partnership program to stimulate innovative research and workplace interventions. In combination with other initiatives, the products of this program are expected to reduce the occurrence of injuries and illnesses at work. Unveiled in 1996, NORA has become a research framework for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the United States. Diverse parties collaborate to identify the most critical issues in workplace safety and health and develop research objectives for addressing those issues. NORA entered its third decade in 2016 with an enhanced structure. The 10 sectors formed for the second decade will continue to prioritize occupational safety and health research by major areas of the U.S. economy. In addition, NORA’s seven cross-sectors will continue to focus on the major health and safety issues affecting the U.S. working population. While NIOSH serves as the steward to move this effort forward, it is truly a national effort. NORA is carried out through councils comprised of members with many diverse interests that are developing and implementing research agendas for the occupational safety and health community over the third decade (2016-2026) of NORA. Councils address objectives through information exchange, partnership building, and enhanced dissemination and implementation of evidenced-based solutions. NORA groups industries into 10 sectors using North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. The Mining Sector encompasses NAICS code grouping 21xxxx where “xxxx” represents the different subcodes of the mining “21” classification. Mining encompasses the extraction of solid mineral and mineral-like substances from their place in the Earth’s crust and supplies them to processing industries that produce economically valuable materials. It does not include oil and gas extraction. The Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA separates mining into coal, underground and surface, and metal and nonmetal, underground and surface.

The caisson is adapted to the foundation of concentrated heavy building. As there are the flowing sand, boulder or cobble and other serious obstruction, the open caisson can't sink, the caisson can solve these problems easily. Especially for the stability of the neighour building, the merit of the caisson is outstanding. Therefore, there are the pier, the foundation of heavy instrument and the large water pumping station etc. using the caisson in China. This paper introduce several caissons and successful experience by author's investigation. It contains the feature and application of the caisson : the examples of caissons such as a huge pier of a bridge acrossing a big river, a large instrument foundation and a large water pump station beside a river; the problem of the design of the caisson and notice items during the caisson construction etc.

Tunnelling under squeezing ground conditions poses significant challenges. There are fundamental differences in the choice of support for mining as opposed to civil engineering. This paper reviews ground support strategies that have been used to control large deformations in mining excavations based on field data from five different mines in Australia and Canada. Recommendations are made for improved ground control strategies in squeezing rock conditions.

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.

The location, features, quality, and extent of iron ore deposits are evaluated in this Bureau of Mines report. The results of pioneer beneficiation on Wyoming taconites and their success are discussed along with developments in the iron-ore mining industry, markets, and economics. Market potential, transportation, resource developments, taxation, cost of iron ore enterprises, and the future of Wyoming iron resources are evaluated. Although occurrences of iron ores in Wyoming were known prior to 1870, early production to 1900 was as a nonferrous metallurgical flux and as mineral pigment for paints. In 1901, the Hartville-Sunrise hematite deposits were available to the Western iron and steel industry and in 1962, the first western taconite operation was placed in production at Atlantic City, Wyo. This investigation disclosed the probability of other large iron deposits in Wyoming. Taconite in the Bradley Peak area of the Seminoe Mountains has a potentiality of 100 million tons; that in the Owl Creek Mountains may prove very large also. Pioneer beneficiation testing has been included, and results have been generally encouraging. Research continues on the large titaniferous magnetite deposits of Albany County, Wyo. At present high-density titaniferous magnetite is being mined and processed at Iron Mountain for heavy-aggregate and as a sized coating for underwater pipelines. Ample mineral raw materials needed for mining and processing Wyoming iron ores are available. Investments for iron-ore processing plants will generally be large, particularly for taconite and titaniferous magnetite.

With the gradual exhaustion of natural rutile, there has been extensive research into its synthesising from lower-grade titanium minerals. The removal of Fe from pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) by chlorination was studied, using both isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetric measurements. Correlation of the results obtained from element distribution maps, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and phases detected by X-ray diffraction in the chlorinated samples showed clearly two associated processes. First, the pseudobrookite particles reacted with chlorine and iron was removed selectively as FeCl3(g), leaving a solid residue rich in the TiO2 phases anatile and rutile, separated from an inner layer of unreacted pseudobrookite by a distinct interphase boundary. Second, chlorine allowed TiCl4(g) to form in the reaction bed, where it removed iron from the Fe2O3 crystals as FeCl3(g) and substituted Ti through a pseudomorphic reaction

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is ordinarily termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) issues are very high profile currently in both Australian coal and metal mines and Australian states are generally moving to acknowledge and to broadly follow US 2008 final metal/non metal mine regulation limits of 0.2 mg/m3 submicron particulate matter, 0.16 mg/m3 total carbon particulate and 0.1 mg/m3 elemental carbon particulate. The real time DPM monitor is being developed on the base of the successful Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit. The objectives of recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study has been to finalize the design of a DPM unit, to undertake comprehensive and internationally recognized laboratory testing to evaluate the new design and to undertake an underground series of tests to establish the robustness and reliability of the new approach. Under the project Thermo Fisher Scientific has undertaken structural changes to the PDM to convert it to a DPM real time monitoring underground instrument, the D-PDM. The Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Research Laboratories of NIOSH (the group that originally contracted for the PDM development) has undertaken laboratory ?calibration or verification? testing. A phase of Australian mine robustness and engineering testing has been undertaken to ensure the instrument can effectively assist mine management to handle this health issue. Tests have been undertaken at points of expected high atmospheric DPM such as during Longwall face moves, Development RAM car, Eimco and PJB usages. The paper discusses how the monitors have performed within the underground mine environment in evaluating DPM during the various phases of the production cycle. They have closely examined the influence of aspects of the mine ventilation system. Results have been compared to alternative industry pollutant measuring approaches. The outcome of the project gives the industry access to an enhanced tool for understanding the mine atmosphere in the presence of DPM. Real time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered in coal longwall face moves where various vehicles work or in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identifying of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground miners? exposure. Some outcomes of the ACARP project in this area will be discussed.

MANY investigations of the rate of the sulfur transfer reaction between carbon-saturated iron and blast furnace type slags have been made." It is evident that the reaction is complex, the rate being affected by the presence of elements dissolved in the metal that are readily oxidized and therefore capable of existing in the slag phase. Thus Goldman, Derge, and Philbrook- have shown that carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum, in order of increasing effectiveness, accelerate sulfur transfer from iron containing these elements to blast furnace type slags. Quantitative information is still, however, not available on the relation between what have been termed side reactions, such as silicon transfer and CO evolution, and the sulfur transfer reaction itself. In other words, the stoichiometry of the reaction has not been investigated. In the present investigation, the transfer of all reacting elements and the evolution of CO have been measured simultaneously in order to establish the mechanism of the reaction which occurs in practice. Information of this nature cannot be deduced from equilibrium studies. It should be pointed out that in kinetic studies of this type quantitative conclusions are applicable only to the system studied. This restriction should be borne in mind when attempts are made to compare results from different investigations. Apparatus The apparatus used enables slag and metal samples to be taken at frequent intervals and also provides a continuous record of the amount of gas evolved. A sketch of the apparatus is given in Fig. 1. It may be considered in three sections: 1) furnace section, 2) blank volume section, and 3) pressure measuring section. The Upper Waimangaroa mining permit is part of the Buller Coalfield and lies on the eastern side of the Stockton-Denniston Plateau. The mining permit area is estimated to contain a total in-ground coal resource of 58 million tonnes, contained within 13 separate coal resource .blocks. The coal is Bituminous High Volatile B rank with export potential as semi soft coking or thermal coal. The Northern Opencast mine is the first mine proposed for Upper Waimangaroa and consists of the three resource blocks at the northern end of the permit area. The highwall of the mine will cut into the Mt William Range resulting in overburden cover of up to 150 metres in some areas. The ability to rehabilitate the area after mining was a major consideration in the design of the mine. The Northern Opencast area has been geologically mapped, extensively drilled and effectively modelled using Vulcan software. Three distinct coal seams are present and the mineable in situ resource is estimated at 8.7 million tonnes of which approximately 7.1 million tonnes is likely to be recoverable. It is proposed that this resource will be mined using opencast methods and the void will be backfilled with overburden. The life of the mine is at this stage estimated at 19 years based on an annual production of 500,000 tonnes at 1.8% sulphur and the Upper Waimangaroacoal will be blended with low sulphur coal from the Greymouth Coalfield to meet export specifications. The Northern Opencast area contains a range of native flora and fauna and physical features which make it an environmentally significant area. Mining will totally modify the area, thus an effective rehabilitation scheme is an integral part of the mine plan. Various rehabilitation methods will be used, and wherever possible, the backfilled areas will be rehabilitated so as to resemble the original area as closely as possible.

Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

"This paper revisits data from previous studies (Hernandez-Aguilar, 2010, 2011) to better understand the link between metallurgical performance and pulp-zone bubble size (Db) in full-scale flotation systems. To obtain conclusive evidence exclusively related to the pulp (collection) zone, the experiments were designed in those studies to control both the bubble generation method and the influence of the froth zone on the overall metallurgical performance in industrial and pilot-scale flotation columns. The results showed that Db had a significantly larger effect on the recovery of coarse (> 75 µm) particles compared to the effect on fine (< 16 µm) particles. It was observed that, under certain practical conditions, the recovery of coarse particles was close to zero, but dramatically increased by reducing Db. The evidence revealed an inconsistency of the so-called “k–PSb” model: at constant froth recovery, increasing Sb (i.e., the rate of production of bubble surface area) did not always result in higher recovery, as the model predicts. Furthermore, the evidence showed that it was not the Sb but the bubble size that proved to be a more reliable link to metallurgical performance. Only in the presence of suboptimal-sized bubbles (Db > 2 mm) did the froth zone seem to play a role, possibly reflecting an effect of pulp-zone bubble size on froth stability. However, the role of the froth was negligible for Db < 1 mm.High-resolution mineralogical measurements performed on process samples revealed that, regardless of the degree of liberation, Db had a profound effect on the shape of the recovery-by-size curve, particularly the coarse particle size fraction. This observation is key as it implies that the loss in efficiency associated with floating the coarse particles was not the result of neither particle hydrophobicity nor particle detachment issues: even in the absence of mechanical agitation, liberated and highly hydrophobic coarse particles did not seem to attach to the bubbles in the first place, an inefficiency that was corrected by reducing bubble size. The data analysis suggests that poor attachment efficiency can practically affect both fine and coarse particles but via different mechanisms which are discussed here."

"Mine waste storages including tailings dams and waste rock dumps represent arguably the biggest risk on a mine site from both physical and geochemical viewpoints, related firstly to structural stability and the consequences of failure and secondly from potential on-going seepage or run-off of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). The risks are most likely to increase during operations and continue through the closure and post-closure phases, with the waste storages likely to be the most difficult features to resolve in the mine closure process. Contaminated water quality from tailings dams and waste rock dumps can require treatment "in perpetuity" at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem is increasing with ever larger mine operations and waste generation volumes. This paper identifies leading practice methodologies in planning and operating mines and process plants to minimise the risks from tailings storages and how this might also affect waste rock management and even the design of mine excavations. These methodologies require a "big-picture" approach to develop an understanding of the overall issues and identify synergies between the different operational areas on a mine site that can reduce overall risk. With a conservative approach and realistic allowance for future costs it is possible to facilitate decisions at the mine planning stage that can reduce risk and save cost over the long term. This is in contrast to the common approach where each operational area is looking to minimise its own costs with a short-term view. Incorrect mine methodologies can be developed by allowing net present value (NPV) accounting methods to trivialise future closure issues.Methodologies discussed include: Integrated Waste Management - Significant structural improvements to tailings dams can be achieved if the structures can be incorporated into the waste rock dumps. Risk of AMD can also be reduced by utilising the tailings and waste rock effectively. This could go even further to consider the placement of wastes to limit mine void environmental issues; Process Optimisation - Water quality and the nature of potential tailings dam structures can be highly influenced by the geo-chemistry of the tailings. This can be modified by processing, where simple changes such as maintaining separate streams of geo-chemically different tailings rather than recombining them or by initiating further processing to remove problematic minerals such as sulphides; Enhancing Geophysical Properties - The geochemical performance of waste repositories can be greatly influenced by the geophysical properties of the stored materials, particularly the air-water characteristics, which are influenced by particle size, density and permeability. The geotechnical properties can be enhanced by strategic paddock dumping, blending and compaction.These methodologies are demonstrated by case histories.CITATION:Brett, D, 2013. Severe whipping of shuttle car trailing cables occurs when the car stops suddenly or reverses direction. This causes cable damage, and can seriously injure personnel near the cable. FMC has contracted with the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design, build and demonstrate a reel control system that will significantly reduce or eliminate whipping. II. CONCLUSIONS Results of engineering effort show that the following conditions are primarily responsible for the whipping problem. Causes may exist individually, or in combination.

For fully effective information to be obtained from exploratory drilling for coal, drilling programs should be planned systemati- cally in successive stages, on the basis of existing geological criteria and information collated during each stage. In this way, drilling can be executed with optimum economy, aided by auxiliary geophysical techniques wherever these may be appropriate. The object- ives of the programs must ultimately include an adequate assessment of mining conditions as well as thorough evaluation of coal quality. The first of these objectives is not always appreciated by both geologists and mining engineers engaged in supervising drilling pro- grams, often resulting in the need for more additional drilling and more expense than would otherwise be required. To achieve all of these objectives as effectively as possible, the drilling should be supervised by well qualified personnel experienced in working in a multi- dicipline, professional mining, geological and engineering team.

"Jet grouting is a method of ground improvement that relies on the erosive capacity of high-speed jets to cut and mix the ground in place with a cementitious grout. A continuous return flow of cuttings, called jet grout backflow or spoils, is expelled to the surface during the grouting process. Data from projects completed in Toronto and Ottawa is presented where BOS Solutions’ services provided significant savings compared to the traditional spoils treatment utilizing vacuum trucks for spoils disposal. These traditional treatment methods are cumbersome and expensive by nature. BOS Solutions provided an alternative solution that is environmentally friendly and capable of handling full flow to process these jet grout spoils utilizing a tank system paired with centrifuges and flocculation additives to remove the ground soils and grout product from the spoils slurry. BOS’ process produced a clean water for reuse in the project while reducing the overall waste volume by producing a dry, stackable solid that could be hauled to a landfill. Benefits observed by using the BOS process were disposal waste volumes decreased over 30% and at least a 19% reduction on disposal costs.SCOPE OF WORKJet grouting is a method of ground improvement that relies on the erosive capacity of high-speed jets to cut and mix the ground in place with a cementitious grout. Traditionally, the spoil would be collected in in-ground pits and allowed to solidify for a few days prior to hauling to a final disposal site. For the projects completed in Toronto and Ottawa, the jet grouting work was performed at street level, in high traffic congested areas, presenting the challenge of insufficient space for the contractors to process the jet grout spoils in the traditional way. At first, attempts were made of using vacuum trucks to collect and haul the wet spoils to an off-site location where the spoils would be allowed to solidify. However, this method proved cumbersome and expensive due to the high volumes of spoils generated daily and the high number of vacuum trucks required to support the jet grouting operations, respectively."

"Recovery of mineralized coarse particles is notoriously low in conventional concentrators that treat copper porphyry ores. The application of coarse particle flotation techniques has the potential to achieve comparable metallurgical performance at significantly coarser primary grind sizings. ALS Metallurgy has been conducting both internal research and commercial test programs to investigate the potential of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology on copper sulphide ores. Test data indicates that significant improvements in the recovery of copper sulphide bearing particles between 200µm to 850µm can be achieved using Hydrofloat technology compared to conventional flotation techniques. This paper summarizes the results from a selection of test programs that includes recovery by size data from both conventional flotation and HydroFloatTM tests. An explanation of the apparatus and test procedure will be given. Mineralogical analyses of the test products and characteristics that limit metallurgical performance will be discussed.Description of Apparatus and Test ProtocolThe HydroFloatTM laboratory cell is a clear plastic column with an internal diameter of 14 cm. Water and air are introduced to the cell through a circular manifold located in the lower portion of the cell. The cell has a conical bottom which directs slurry to a pinch valve that controls the discharge of tailings. Feed solids are introduced to the upper portion of the cell in slurry form. The cell is operated in a manner such that the manifold water creates a teeter bed zone of suspended solids in the middle portion of the cell. Tailings exit the bottom of the cell at a high pulp density, and most of the introduced water overflows the top of the column and is collected in a launder. Particles with a hydrophobic surface may attach to air bubbles that percolate through the teeter bed, rendering them sufficiently buoyant to be transported to the overflow launder.Three significant features of this arrangement enhance the potential to recover coarse, low grade particles by flotation techniques. Firstly, the hindered settling conditions created by the rising column of water allow coarse particles to become buoyant once attached to a modest sized air bubble. Secondly, the flow conditions within the cell are relatively quiescent compared to a conventional flotation cell that utilizes an agitator. This allows particles that have limited hydrophobic portions of their surface, due to a low content of exposed sulphide mineral, to maintain a somewhat fragile attachment to air bubbles long enough for successful recovery to the overflow. Finally, the absence of a froth phase at the top of the cell allows particles attached to air bubbles to immediately exit the vessel, reducing the potential to drop back into the pulp phase as bubbles burst or coalesce."
