Conventional methods designate a factor of safety, a deterministic number, to indicate the stability of a mine excavation. However, this deterministic description of excavation stability is frequently insufficient or inaccurate and, sometimes, misleading. Employing the probabilistic analysis to determine the likelihood of mine excavation failures will lead to a better understanding of ground control problems and result in more rigorous designs of the excavations. Based on the theory of probability, two approaches are taken in this study for the probabilistic analysis of excavation stability. The first one utilizes direct integrations for the estimation of failure probabilities of mine excavations. Due to the complexity of the integration, this approach can only be applied to solve relatively simple problems. In order to overcome the limitation of the direct integration method, the second approach employs the first-order second-moment approximation of the failure probabilities for more complex ground control problems. The probabilistic analysis offers a deeper insight into the uncertainty associated with the stability of mine excavations. The study indicates that the distributions of parameter values play a significant role in the mine excavation stability, which can not be disclosed by the conventional methods of stability analysis. Greater dispersiveness of the parameter values will lead to a different probability of failure, although the factor of safety estimated by conventional methods stays the same if the mean values of the parameters are constant. By taking consideration of the probabilistic distributions of the parameters, the probability model can provide more reliable designs of mine excavations.

At an early stage of the examination of most prospects, samples are taken; and the sample values obtained play an important part in determining the subsequent history of the prospect. It is, therefore, important that. eveJJy effort should be made to interpret asfully as possible the meaning of the observed results. In this connection, it is suggested that examination of the assay values of mine samples by simple statistical methods may bring to light information of considerable value, which might otherwise be missed.Although expert statisticians may derive more information from the available data, those who are, like the writer, less proficient mathematically, may also benefit by applying quite simple statistical methods. At least they will develop a useful habit of thought bywhich they become aware at all times that sampling results only provide estimates of the truth, but that an assessment of the precision of such results may be possible. The object of this paper is to provide some evidence of. the truth of these statements, by theuse of a few very elementary statistical calculations.General.The idea that any mine sample is subject to error from a variety of causes is a very familiar one. Doubt always exists with regard to the representativeness of a perfectly cut sample, and other errors may arise through imperfections of sample cutting, crushing, splitting and assaying. Some causes of error may give rise to "constant" errors, others may cause variable but one-sided "systematic" errors, and others again may bring about variable results without any tendency toward bias on the average. In statistical language, mine sample values are subject to errors which may have either assignable causes or chance causes. The former are those which can be isolated, or should be capable of isolation, while the latter are those remaining when all assignable causes have been removed. A single constant assignable cause brings about bias in all results, and one or more than one variable assignable cause brings about variation between individual results and perhaps an overall bias. The system of chance causes that would remain if all assignable causes were removed would cause variation between individual results but no overall bias. SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. The main constituents of ferromanganese slags are silicates of Mn, Ca and AI. Factors affecting the recovery of manganese from a low manganese content ferromanganese slag (about 16 per cent MnO) during acid leaching were studied. These included time, temperature, agitation, sulphuric acid addition, solid:liquid ratio and particle size. Agitation rates greater than 300 rev/min. leaching periods greater than 30 min and temperatures above ambient were found to have no effect on Mn recovery. Dissolution of Mn was found to be highly dependent on the amount of acid added.About 90 per cent of the Mn was recovered when 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid was used. About 28 per cent of the Mn was recovered when the stoichiometric quantity of acid (with respect to Mn alone) was used. However, the recovery increased to about 75 per cent when the total stoichiometric requirement of acid with respect to Ca, Al, Mg and Fe as well as Mn was used for leaching. The extent of Mn dissolution also depended on the particle size of the slag. The percentage of Mn recovery (using 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid) increased from about 60 per cent to about 92 per cent when particle size decreased from -36 +52 to -150 +200 mesh (B.S.S.). When the results of this study were compared with those in a previous study involv,ing the leaching of a high manganese content slag (containing about 40 per cent MnO) results were similar except that there was a gr-eater consumption of acid in the present case (i.e. low manganese content slag).

As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

However, during the world?s most recent mining ?bust? Yukon has held strong and has re-mained one of the world?s hottest destinations for mineral exploration. In fact, the area even exceeded forecasts in 2009, more than doubling last year. And the near-future looks just as bright.

Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

The exhausted Santa Barbara open pit mine (Tuscany, Italy), owned by the main electric power company in Italy (ENEL S.p.A,) extracted lignite as a fuel for the Santa Barbara thermoelectric power plant. The mining activity led to the excavation of a wide slope (with maximum height of 200 m and a planar extension of about 1300 m x 500 m) in the Shale Limestone Chaotic Complex (SLCC) (Figure 1). Since the beginning of its excavation the slope underwent rotational landslides and diffuse instability phenomena. From a geotechnical point of view the SLCC represents a typical bimrock (block-in-matrix rock) (Medley 1994, Medley 2002, Medley 2007) characterized by a mixture of a highly sheared, scaly-fabric, clayey matrix and calcareous blocks ranging from a few millimetres to tens of metres in size. Since the geometrical properties of blocks (grain-size distribution, shape, orientation and volumetric proportion) have been proved to influence the mechanical behaviour of bimrocks (Lindquist & Goodman 1994, Goodman & Ahlgren 2000, Kim et al. 2004, Sonmez et al. 2006), the aim of the present study is to investigate the geometrical properties of calcareous blocks in order to properly characterize the mechanical behaviour of the SLCC bimrock and to further assess the stability of the slope. Block size-distribution and shape were investigated by means of advanced image analysis techniques of SLCC pictures taken in the field. Geostatistical semivariograms and variographic maps were also used in order to investigate the anisotropy of block spatial distribution. Finally, in-situ large sized sieving tests were carried out to investigate the volumetric block proportion within the clayey matrix.

Construction vibrations may be harmful to adjacent and remote structures, sensitive instruments and people. Construction vibration sources have a wide range of energy, displacement, velocity and acceleration transmitted on the ground. Effects of different dynamic sources and soil conditions on construction vibrations is analyzed. Consequences of construction vibrations are developed in various ways. It is important to assess intolerable vibrations before the beginning of construction activities. Guidelines for preconstruction survey are presented. Pre-construction survey and prediction of anticipated vibrations by IRFP method, monitoring and control of measured vibrations are important steps in preventing intolerable vibration effect.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) development continues to take on not only larger diameters, but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar have required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunneling machines that can safely excavate the tunnel in an efficient, cost-effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This article reviews the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied. The world?s growing population and rapidly proceeding urbanization are boosting an enormous demand for new and high-capacity infrastructures to secure the mobility of goods and people. Densely populated areas face the challenge of providing efficient traffic infrastructure such as a modern public transport system. At the same time, the maintenance and modernization of supply and disposal structures for water, sewage, energy and communication are essential. Last but not least, are supra-regional transportation routes such as long distance water diversion schemes. All of these projects are as demanding and are characterized by a tight time schedule. In this context, the demand for efficient tunnels for traffic and utility lines is increasing, as new infrastructures often leads underground because of limited space above ground. Also, tunnels are the obvious choice to cross natural barriers like mountain ranges. To handle the complex and variable geological conditions and other constraints, such as low overburden, high water pressure or long tunnel drives while facing increasing demand of a quick completion of a project, mechanized tunneling sets standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection in traffic tunneling projects as well as in the trenchless construction of utility tunnels. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to master various geological and hydrogeological requirements. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant improvement of the mechanized tunneling process.

"Cameco's McArthur River is the world's largest high grade uranium mine. Production started in late 1999. Cameco carried out the engineering design and construction management for the McArthur River project, including all aspects of mining, ore handling and ore transportation. The ore composition was expected to vary dramatically (0 to 30% U3O8; 0 to 25% clay; etc). To cope with the composition swings, sizing screens were selected to provide classification in the grinding circuit. The grinding circuit started up close to the design to provide minus 500 micron slurry. The 50% solids (wt) ground ore slurry proved to be difficult to transport to and process at the Key Lake Mill. Slurry containing high concentrations of high density pitchblende (about spgr 8.0) and low concentration of stabilizing clays, would settle in containers. Ore transport efficiency to Key Lake was found to be unacceptable.A test classification cyclone was installed in the grinding circuit at McArthur River early in 2002. The cyclone operating parameters were not typical, but the cyclone was made to work very successfully. Transportation efficiency to Key Lake increased due to more stable slurry. Preferentially ground (fine) pitchblende particles were easier to leach at Key Lake. The radiation exposure for operators and maintenance personnel to handle the more stable slurry was also reduced.The classification sizing screens were removed from the McArthur River grinding circuit and replaced by permanent classification cyclones late in 2002.INTRODUCTIONThe McArthur River mine and Key Lake mill operations are located in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 650 and 720 kilometres from Saskatoon, respectively. Figure 1 is a location map. McArthur River is the world's largest, high-grade uranium mine, with a production capacity of 18.7 million pounds U3O8 annually. (Rosner and Edwards 1998, Dyck 2000, Jamrozek 2000, Rodgers 2001) Proven and probable reserves are more than 473 million pounds U3O8. McArthur River ore, grading on average 21% U3O8, is milled at Cameco's Key Lake operation, 80 kilometres southwest by road. McArthur River production began in December 1999."

In this paper it is the author's intention to show the extent and character of foreign ores now known to be available; these deposits may be in active production or held in reserve until economic conditions may make them active. He hopes to show the relation existing between these ores and the American supply, and which of the former are now producing or will in turn come into production when our better ores have been exhausted. This phase of this discussion must of necessity include some data as to the present rate of consumption and a study of the changes we may expect here and abroad in the general steel trade and its sources of supply in raw materials. It is obvious that the occurrence of coal, ore and limestone in relation to one another and the proximity of a market are the elements in control of this feature of the problem. If the foregoing situation is favorable, all the other questions may be solved, for it is clear that with proper basic conditions finance, labor and operations will fall in line. We present a short outline of the present methods of carrying on the foreign iron ore trade, believing that it is of general interest in comparison with our own highly specialized methods, and that with the exhaustion of our better ores we will be compelled to seek a part of our supply abroad. A partial list of iron ores, with incomplete analyses (Table I), is added, to give a better understanding of the general situation and explain to some extent the reason for things being as they are in the iron and steel trade of the world and to help in bringing this paper to an informing conclusion. The question of the world supply of iron ores has been a subject for study on the part of geologists and engineers for many years, and found its best results in the Eleventh International Geological Congress, appropriately held at Stockholm, Sweden, in 1910. The proceedings are published in two volumes and are undoubtedly the best records available on this subject at the date of publication. It should be borne in mind, however, that much has happened in the 20 years since these figures were assembled. There is just as much known ore at present as at that time, minus the quantity consumed, plus newly discovered reserves. Minerales Monclova, S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) is owned by Grupo Acerero Del Norte (GAN). This company has 4 underground coal mines and 1 open pit to feed it?s steelmaking facilities located in the city of Monclova in the North of México in the state of Coahuila. The current underground mines are Mine 3, 5, 6 and 7 and the future projects are Mines 8 and 9. In the last years Mines 2 and 4 have been closed because they finished their coal resources. The remaining mines have bigger production and developments requirements in order to accomplish the goals of the company. The mines have been working in deeper and gassier areas. These conditions have required improvements in the ventilation design and methane control systems for all the mines. In some cases the ventilation of some of the MIMOSA?S mines has been increased 80%, and besides this, an intensive methane drainage program has been applied using horizontal in-seam boreholes and gob wells. The short-term ventilation plan includes the construction of 3 new vertical shafts with 5 and 6 meters diameter for Mines 5, 6 and 7 and the purchasing of bigger new main and backup fans for each one of these mines. One of these vertical shafts and the purchasing of the first 2 fans is already in process. This paper will explain the evolution and results of the ventilation and methane drainage systems in MIMOSA and the ventilation planning for the future years.

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. Using mines in Canada, Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services and products, has put its Stage 3 Coring Bit to the test and each time the bit has passed the test with great success. After more than a year in the field at a major mine operation in Sudbury, Canada, the Stage3 coring bit broke life records to become recognized as the most productive design in the industry. In addition to the proven advantage seen in regular bit life increases of as much as 300 percent in some cases, the design is quickly being recognized for its cost-saving operational impact. In Sudbury, the mine operation realized actual cash savings of more than C$45,000 within an eight-month period by making the switch to Stage3 bits. For years, the Sudbury Basin team has relied on the Alpha Extended Crown bit with the Express Waterway geometry option, ordering approximately 500 units per year. This 07 COM ECEX configuration performed well in medium-hard, non-abrasive to ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations with an average bit life of 150 m (490 ft). While satisfied with the performance of the Alpha Ex-tended Crown, the team agreed to put the new Alpha Stage3 to the test. Boart Longyear?s field engineers supplied five drill sites with Alpha Stage3 bits in a 07 COM configuration. After thoroughly testing the Stage3, the results were clear. Even with the well-known performance and versatility offered by the previously preferred configuration, the Stage3 set a new standard of bit performance. The new bit maintained its cutting edge for up to three times longer than the Alpha Extended Crown, a significant performance increase when compared to the 07 COM ECEX.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication presents a case study of the processes used in permitting the Nome Offshore Placer Project, a gold mining project offshore Nome, Alaska which operated from 1985 through 1990. The mining project, developed by Western Gold Exploration and Mining Company, Limited Partnership (WestGold), used the BIMA, which was at the time the largest bucketline mining vessel in the world, to dredge gold from the ocean floor. This case study reviews the permitting process from the regulators' and industry's perspectives, as well as characterizing the efficiencies and inefficiencies associated with this case. The Federal, State and local laws applicable to the Nome Offshore Placer Project are identified, agency jurisdiction and interagency relationships are explored, and the chronology of the permitting process is examined. The regulatory authorities for both environmental monitoring and post-mining monitoring are delineated. Significant milestones affecting the project and required regulatory submittals are also included. The case study of the Nome Offshore Placer Project is detailed with respect to agency involvement and coordination, approaches to permitting from both the regulators' and developer's perspective, environmental issues, and permit stipulations which were unique to the project. The advantages and disadvantages of these topics are discussed.

The contour method can be used to estimate the mineral resources of a mineralized body. It relies on geological interpretation and allows the geologist to determine the plunge of a mineralized ore shoot along the dipping plane of the mineralized body. The technique is best applied to estimate tonnage and average grade of relatively planar bodies, i.e., where the two dimensions of the mineralized body are much greater than the third dimension, such as Archean lode gold vein deposits or mantos of massive sulphide mineralization, based on exploration drilling. For these types of deposits, the contour method can provide a clear view of the “mineralization landscape” with “peaks” and “valleys” along the plane of the mineralized vein. The technique also reduces the “nugget effect” of local high values commonly present in gold deposits. With sufficient drill hole information, the contour method may be used to estimate the tonnage and average grade of individual blocks within a mineral deposit. General procedures for the contour method are described in this paper, along with examples and explanatory notes.

"Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."
