Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

Currently six economic heavy mineral deposits are known on the Penholoway Terrace. These are (from south to north) the Green Cove Springs Mine (GCS), Boulogne Mine, Folkston Mine, Mission, Lulaton, and Ludowici. The GCS deposit is located to the west of Highway 17 between the towns of Green Cove Springs and Palatka in the state of Florida and has been mined since 1972. To the north, the erosion created by Black Creek restricts the northern extension of the orebodies and to the south a karst depression and erosion by the St. Johns River restrict southern extensions. The deposit is 20 miles long and up to 4.5 miles wide. Deposit thickness is from 5 feet up to 45 feet. The deposit is a series of regressive barrier island sequences deposited during the Pleistocene along the ancient Penholoway and Wicomico shorelines. The initial transgression of the ocean up to the location of the western Henry orebody was an extensive sea-level still stand as evidenced by the unit thickness and stacked transgressive regressive sequences. This period was followed by sporadic regressing seas and still stands, progressing eastward and stranding the sand bodies which make up the East Extended, TE, and East TE Ridge orebodies. The orebodies are underlain by predominantly non-mineralized fluvial sands and occasional back barrier lagoonal deposited clays. There is a predominance of wetlands on the southern extents of the zone as the surface elevations decrease due to a large karst depression.

Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. This paper deals with the development of environment performance indicators (EPIs) for the steel industry. Environmental performance has become one of the key measures of business success. Emergence of continuing pressure from customers, employees, government and NGOs for environmental performance evaluation (EPE) of industries has led to evolve a framework for the development of sector specific environmental performance indicators. EPIs can be used by steel industry for assessing the continual improvement in environmental perfromance, selecting various eco-friendly options, benchmarking, environmental reporting, technology assessment and dissemination, evaluating environmental impacts and building EPIs based environmental management systems. The objective of this paper is to develop EPIs for steel industry and provide framework for development of environmental performance indicators based environmental management system and its integration with the overall management system. An indepth discussion has been presented concerning identification of EPIs, eavaluation of significance of EPIs, their prioritization and its integration with Environmental Management Systems. A new methodology has been proposed for implementing EPIs based environmental management systems . The material presented is derived in part from PhD studies of Rajesh Kumar Singh.

In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.

A number of important international events took place in 2001 in the development and evolution of mineral valuation standards internationally. In Canada, the CIMVal Committee released a draft discussion paper for public and industry comment on principles to guide the development of the planned Canadian mineral property valuation standard. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) received comments on its Extractive Industries Issues Paper. IASB will decide whether the financial statements of public mining and petroleum companies will be allowed to provide the value of mineral and petroleum assets on a current value basis instead of an historic cost basis. The author led the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) in developing its submission to IASB. IVSC intends to develop an extractive industries valuation section for its International Valuation Standards, which could support the planned IASB standard. In Australia, AusIMM has carried out an in-depth review of its highly regarded VALMIN Code. The AusIMM's MICA subdivision organized the VALMIN ‘01 Conference in Sydney, Australia, with a range of international and current issues papers published in the VALMIN ‘01 book. Considerable support for the IVSC initiative was evident at this conference. The results of the review of the extractive industries submissions to the IASB are expected to be released in early 2002. The CMMI Congress in Cairns, Australia in May 2002 is likely to prove to be an important forum for continued discussion of the development and implementation of international standards and qualifications for mineral valuation. The outcomes and implications of these events are discussed.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes.Water is routed to the roof bolter fromthe main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/ m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box, the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3, a 60% reduction in respirable dust concentration. The quartz content of the roofmaterialwas high, ranging from 28.9 to 52.7%during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60% when cleaning the collector boxes.

The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior ofTiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was 150 and that of the silica in the same system was 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

Recently. researchers at The University of Alabama have developed a two-step method for the treatment of phosphorus sludge that includes bulk removal of phosphorus by physical separation techniques followed by remediation of the residual P4 in the sludge using a novel wet air oxidation technique known as "HSAD", Tests made on samples of the electric furnace phosphorus sludge have demonstrated that essentially complete and fast removal of the P4 in the sludge can be achieved by the HSAD wet oxidation treatment, Further studies were made to determine the applicability of the two-step process on sludges of various origins. P4 contents different pre-treatment and storage conditions, The present work discusses the mechanisms and factors controlling the HSAD wet air oxidation remediation approach.

The discovery that triggered the current gold rush in southeastern Peru was made in about 1975 along the Rio Madre de Dios in Madre de Dios Department (Fig. 1). About 5000 to 10,000 miners (called chichiqueros) were working in the area as of 1990. Placer mining is the principal source of revenue for people living along the Rio Inambari and west of Puerto Maldonado. As in past gold rushes, working and living condition are harsh. Supplies are expensive, and the area has poor access compared with other areas in Peru. Food, fuel and all mining supplies are trucked over dirt roads from Cuzco, a three-to-five-day trip (Fig. 1). Some material also comes from Brazil. Many placers have a similar life cycle, beginning with small-volume mining (surface or underground). At the end of this small-scale mining, the placer is exhausted or it has a sufficient volume of gravel high enough in gold grade to be worked by large-volume methods, which lead to exhaustion of the resource. The level of maturity of a placer can be determined from its gold grade. The amount of gold production from large-volume mining can be predicted, given detailed, cumulative gold-production data on placer deposits during small-scale mining (Bliss et al., 1987). Using this general model, the authors analyzed the placers in the Rio Madre de Dios area. Small-volume mining Most placer mining in the Rio Madre de Dios area is in alluvial deposits either in or bordering the major rivers. Locally, some placer mining is in terrace deposits above the rivers. All minerals (including the subsoil) in Peru belong to the state. However, a mining claim (denuncia) is easily obtained for mineral exploitation. It is separate from property ownership.

Comminution is an important unit operation of mineral processing in terms of large tonnage of materials processed, huge energy consumption, and high capital and operating costs. Substantial research efforts have been directed towards the development of process-engineering tools including mathematical models, process scale-up procedures and computer simulation packages (Austin et al., 1984; Rajamani and Herbst, 1990; Kawatra, 1992). The simulation systems are found to provide significant cost savings by enabling efficient circuit design and development of control systems. Most of these simulators are built from scratch, do not make use of software modules from other sources and are designed with minimal usage of formal software methodologies.

Ground engaging tools are used to prevent damage to the main components of earth-moving equipment. These tools consist of everything from shovel teeth to replaceable drill bits to dozer wear plates. The costs of these ?consumable? items are increasing with the costs of raw materials. This project developed a tool to be used by Newmont Mining Corporation to predict the consumption of excavator teeth. This paper presents the results of a Montana Tech research project in which an equation was developed to predict excavator teeth consumption based on production rates and rock properties.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

We performed numerical modeling studies to investigate water seepage into underground openings excavated in unsaturated fractured rock. Water seepage is a key factor affecting the performance of a nuclear waste repository such as the one proposed at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The amount of water dripping into an underground opening depends on the connectivity and permeability of the fracture network as well as on the capillarity of individual fractures intersecting the opening. We developed a high-resolution numerical model of an unsaturated fracture network and examined the appropriateness of seepage predictions using a fracture-continuum model. Model calibrations to liquid-release tests performed at Yucca Mountain are also discussed.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. With ever rising energy costs, it is increasingly important for mines to operate with energy efficiency. As a large portion of a mine?s energy consumption is often attributed to the operation of mine ventilation fans, maintaining an efficient ventilation system is a critical pro-active way for mining companies to reduce power costs. A common way to measure a mine?s ventilation system efficiency is to calculate the volumetric efficiency, which is simply a calculation of the percentage of total mine air that is usefully employed for production. The purpose of this study is to document a nationwide comparison of the volumetric efficiency of U.S. underground coal mining operations. The results will aim to show just how efficient today?s coal mine ventilation systems are and what factors may be causing their various efficiencies and inefficiencies.

Alaska?s known mineral endowment includes some of the largest and highest grade deposits of various metals, including gold, copper and zinc. Recently, Alaska has also been active in the worldwide search for sources of rare earth elements (REE) to replace exports now being limitedby China. Driven by limited supply of the rare earths, combined with their increasing use in new ?green? energy, lighting, transportation, and many other technological applications, the rare earth metals neodymium, europium and, in particular, the heavy rare earth elements terbium, dysprosium and yttrium are forecast to soon be in critical short supply (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010). The REE, accompanied by other high field strength metals (such as Nb, Zr, Ti, Th, W), are associated with alkaline complexes of the Hogatza Belt in northwest Alaska; peraluminous tin-granites of the Ruby batholith in central Alaska and the Porcupine plateau in the northeast; and peralkaline intrusive complexes in the southwest Alaska Range west of Anchorage, and on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Limited evidence suggests that the heavy REE are associated with deposits that became more highly evolved by late hydrothermal processes.

In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore.
