The selection of open-pit slope angles involves high-value decisions with small changes in slope angle, often representing significant changes in net present value. The existing methods used to define design acceptance criteria have evolved from factor of safety to probability of failure (P[F]) to risk consequence to risk frontiers, which represents current state of the art. Current design acceptance measures are based on references to published tables representing the experience and judgement of their authors, who did not specify the purpose of the measures contained therein. As the purpose of the published design acceptance criteria is not specified (i.e., definite stability, marginal stability, optimization, etc.), such tables cannot be used to achieve optimum slope angles that maximize profitability. This paper develops a design acceptance criterion that maximizes profitability by defining a formulation for optimum risk that balances expected risk and reward. The model developed is titled the Mining Risk Model (MRM), and is applied to open-pit slope angle selection through an equation for optimum probability of downside (P[D]O) that balances the upside or opportunity, the P[F], and the downside impact. This formulation for optimum risk is unique, as many authors have presented objective functions for their risk models that can be optimized, but none of the sources reviewed contained a formulation for optimum risk. The MRM is sufficiently flexible to allow the design performance measure that drives P[F], and hence P[D]O, to be selected based on the intended goal. Furthermore, the essential information that must be known to quantify optimum risk is defined. This allows users to determine what information to collect for optimum risk decisions. A further benefit of the MRM is that slope angle decisions and pit shells can be ranked to select the best option, and a threshold is provided that separates acceptable from unacceptable decisions. Finally, the workflow and information required to determine optimum risk are presented.

One of the biggest problems in open pit mining is slope stability. The avoidance of slope stability problems depends on a comprehensive assessment of environmental and operational factors such as geology, climate, and mining activities. In the light of these considerations, slope geometries should be determined in accordance with engineering principles. In this research, the slope stability of rock slopes in a mine opened in a gneiss geological unit has been studied. Production activities were ceased in 2019 due to the slope movements in the eastern part of the quarry. In order to safely continue the production, field works were primarily carried out. To assess slope stability, detailed discontinuity surveys were carried out on bench faces. Subsequently, kinematic and numerical analyses were employed to identify geometries that are expected to maintain stability under the prevailing geological structures and environmental constraints. Engineering geological studies such as scanline measurements in steps and investigation of potential failure mechanisms by kinematic analysis technique were carried out. Small module reactor and Q-slope rock mass classification systems were used to evaluate slope stability. Based on these classification systems potential unstable rock slopes were identified and thematic maps were created using geographic information systems. The most suitable slope geometries are suggested for these slopes. In addition, the improvement methods suggested by the rock mass classification systems were proposed for these slopes.

The presence of fines (particles smaller than 6 mm in diameter) causes hydrodynamic problems in gasifiers and therefore it is of great importance to minimize the amount of fine coal in the feed. This serves as motivation for understanding coal?s breakage mechanisms, which could lead to the ability to predict the generation of fines. The aim of this project was to simulate the pulsating effect of the conveyor belt in order to investigate factors influencing the breakage. Results indicated that an increased initial particle size had an increasing effect in the amount of fines generated. Weathering had an insignificant effect on the breakage of coal. To conclude, a breakage model was developed to describe the rate of breakage out of the top size when a combination of two breakage modes is present.

The corrosion properties of iron-based composite materials containing graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement were investigated. The effects of silicon carbide reinforcement were investigated by adding 0.5% graphite and 1%, 2%, and 4% SiC. A powder metallurgy method was used to produce the composite samples. Iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were blended for one hour with a threeaxis mixer and then unidirectionally pressed under a pressure of 750 MPa. After pressing, the composite materials were sintered at 1100°C for one hour. The corrosion properties and microstructure, density, and hardness properties of the composite materials that can affect the corrosion properties were also investigated. It was determined that the pore ratio and hardness of the composite material increased, and corrosion resistance decreased, with increasing silicon carbide content.

Metallurgical aspects of metal founding are considered, and modern techniques for the control of casting conditions are examined. These aspects are related to the structure and quality of cast metal and to the development of newer types of cast material and product.

The aspect ratio (mill diameter/mill length) of autogenous and semi autogenous mills varies widely and can be as high as three or as low as 0.5. The literature on the subject of what effect aspect ratio has on grinding mill performance or energy efficiency is almost non-existent. However, at the design stage of many grinding circuits the subject is often vigorously debated amongst metallurgists. In this paper the performance characteristics of mills with different aspect ratios are examined to determine whether process performance characteristics are a function of aspect ratio and whether high aspect ratio mills are any more or less energy efficient than low aspect ratio units. Data from both pilot and full-scale mills are used for this purpose in open and closed circuit configurations.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

"Double oxide films (bifilms) are significant defects in light alloy castings that occur when, during melt handling, the oxidized surface of the melt is folded over onto itself and then entrained into the liquid metal, encapsulating a portion of the local atmosphere. These defects create crevices in the final castings and have been shown to decrease tensile and fatigue properties, and also to increase their scatter, making casting properties unreproducible and unreliable. This paper reports on two different experiments performed to study the behaviour of such defects in Al alloys. In the first experiment and as a proxy for a bifilm, air bubbles were held in an Al-5Mg alloy melt for varying periods of time before the melt was allowed to solidify. The composition of the gas content of the bubbles was subsequently analysed using mass spectrometry to ascertain how it changed with time. In the other experiment the influence of the age of bifilms on the mechanical properties of Al-5Mg castings was assessed by holding castings in the liquid state for different times before solidification, followed by mechanical property testing and SEM and EDX studies of the fracture surfaces of tensile test bars. This research could provide a better understanding of the behaviour of double oxide film defects, and may lead to the development of new techniques by which these defects could be eliminated, or at least deactivated, in light alloy castings. Introduction One of the major structural defects affecting the reproducibility of mechanical properties of aluminium castings is the double oxide film defect (El-Sayed and Essa, 2017; El-Sayed and Ghazy, 2017). This type of defect is usually created as a result of poor filling system design. Owing to the very high reactivity of liquid Al-Mg alloy with oxygen in the air, the surface of the liquid metal can be considered to be permanently coated with an oxide film (Weigel and Fromm, 1990). As a consequence of surface turbulence, the oxidized metal surface can become folded over onto itself, but not fused, and then submerged into the bulk liquid, with a portion of the mould atmosphere being entrapped within it (Campbell, 2003; Al- Sayed, 2016; El-Sayed, Hassanin, and Essa, 2016)."

In this research, the thermodynamic study of sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) solution in the presence and absence of H2SO4 and Fe3(SO4)3 was done. Eh-pH and equilibrium distribution diagrams were constructed using Outotec HSC Chemistry Software and the main stable ionic species were determined. Also, the mean activity coefficient and Pitzer model coefficients were evaluated. Effects of system composition, sodium persulfate concentration and temperature were investigated. According to the results, HS2O7 -, HS2O8 -, S5O3 2-, S4O3 2-, S3O3 2-, HS- and NaSO4 - are the main stable species in these three systems. Increasing of sodium persulfate concentration resulted in disappearing of SO4 2- and the appearance of NaSO4 -. The main effect of increasing the temperature from 25 to 75oC, is changing the stability regions of HS2O7 -, NaSO4 -, SO4 2- and S2-. From equilibrium studies, it was concluded that at 25 and 50oC, increasing the persulfate concentration results in a 55-60% decrease for HS2O7 - and an 20- 30% increase for HS2O8 -. At 75oC, HS2O8 - becomes the main species and its percentage decreases with increasing the persulfate concentration. Keywords: Thermodynamic, sodium persulfate, activity coefficient

Irgiredmet has substantial experience on RIP and RIL technology for gold recovery, having started development of ion exchange technology in 1964. Irgiredmet specialists were involved in the majority of RIL and RIP projects in the former Soviet Union and Russia, and took part in commissioning of practically all plants using ion exchange technology. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for designing 15 RIP plants of the former USSR using bifunctional macroporous anionite AM-2B or its analogs. This paper is devoted to the laboratory, pilot plant testing and introduction of RIP technology conducted in cooperation with GC Pertopavlovsk. Medium base resin PuroLite S992 (PuroGold) was used as adsorbent. Some adsorption regularities and the affinity of resin to metal cyanide complexes were studied. Laboratory batch and continuous pilot tests on resin-in-pulp process were held for oxidised ores from Pioneer, Albyn and Malomyr mines (Amur region, Russia) owned by the Petropavlovsk company. A simplified flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration was developed. Alkaline cyanide solution was used as gold eluent and gold was recovered from eluates by electrowinning. Process design criteria were developed on the basis of the testwork results, and the plants were designed and constructed by GC Petropavlovsk. The RIP plant at Pioneer was commissioned in May 2008, at Malomyr in August 2010, and at Albyn deposit in December 2011. These plants are currently in operation at design performance at throughputs from 3 to 6.5 Mt/year. The primary gold ores of Pioneer and Malomyr deposits are refractory to cyanidation; Irgiredmet also completed continuous testwork on RIP technology using medium-base resin for pressure oxidation (POX) residues derived from their flotation concentrates. In 2019 a hydrometallurgical plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrate after POX was commissioned at Pokrovsky mine (Amur region). Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. Plurigaussian simulation allows constructing lithofacies or rock type models that reproduce the contacts between facies in accordance with the geologist?s interpretation. Its implementation requires inferring the local facies proportions, but the uncertainty in the true proportions is not accounted for. The simpler model with constant facies proportions may not yield realistic results, due to the possibility of obtaining facies at locations where it is geologically unlikely to find them. This article presents a variation of the plurigaussian model, in which the facies proportions are represented by random fields. The realizations can be made conditional to soft geological informati onto account for local changes in the facies proportions. The model is illustrated via a case study of a porphyry copper deposit where four Gaussian random fields are simulated conditionally to drill hole data and to constraints on the probability of finding a given facies at specific locations (control points) in the deposit. Then the first two fields are truncated using the random thresholds defined by the last two, generating a three-facies model. The proposed random proportion model proves to be simple to use and to account for spatial variations of the geological characteristics and for the uncertainty in the facies proportions. Dolomite is a calcium carbonate sedimentary rock that can be found all over the world. In its calcined form it is employed for water treatment or as an additive in iron production. Calcined dolomite is produced at the Wünschendorfer Dolomitwerk GmbH in shaft furnaces (kilns). Because of an expansion of the mined deposit, significantly higher extraction costs were expected. Therefore, the existing upgrading processes for the kiln stone fraction had to be adapted and improved. This paper presents a process optimisation which allows for an increase of the yield of calcined dolomite by 10 % due to a redesign of the crusher circuit and by an additional 5 % due to a comprehensive characterisation of the kiln stone fraction itself. Here the interdependency between the pressure drop in the furnace during calcination and the size distribution of furnace stones was used to increase the amount of fine size fractions in the furnace feed without deterioration of the calcination process. A dynamic model is used to represent the single-stage closed grinding mill circuit at Mogalakwena North Concentrator. The circuit consists of a ball mill closed by a hydrocyclone. The circuit is modelled according to a semi-mechanistic non-linear dynamic model available in literature. An algebraic routine is used to fit model parameters to steady-state process data. Preliminary validation results against dynamic data indicate that the model is capable of capturing the main dynamic trends of the plant. Since classical system identification techniques proved insufficient to produce accurate models; the non-linear model can be used as a reliable source for model-predictive controller design. The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

Introduction Structure appears to be of secondary importance to the Bushveld Complex when viewed from a distance. However, a closer look already reveals that large fault zones bound the Bushveld Complex. These fault zones are deep-seated crustal lineaments of continental magnitude such as the Thabazimbi-Murchison Lineament, the Johannesburg-Barberton Lineament, the Palala Fault zone and the Rustenburg fault. Furthermore, the Bushveld Complex is transected by large faults such as the Vlakfontein Fault, visible in the Pilanesberg, the Steelport Fault and the Laersdfrift Fault in the Eastern Bushveld, the Brits Graben, and a multitude of dyke generations (Figure 1). When pursuing structures on a project scale, the lack of outcrop, particularly in the western part of the Bushveld, is of no help for the exploration geologist. Consequently, the first dataset that needs to be considered is the Landsatimagery. Older Landsat TM 5 or newer Landsat ETM 7 will immediately reveal areas of outcrop for field visits, and, after further processing, indicate the geological units, in particular the platiniferous Critical and the Main Zone of the Rustenburg Layered Suite (Figure 2). Airborne magnetic surveys are the subsequent dataset necessary for any decent interpretation of the geology under the ?Black Turf? cover. Currently Anglo Platinum acquires aeromagnetic surveys with a flight height of 20 m and a line spacing of 50 m. These result in high-resolution imagery absolutely crucial for dyke delineation and dip modelling, stratigraphic layer detection, IRUP detection and possibly pothole discovery and fault delineation (Figures 3 and 4). However, the aeromagnetic surveys and the Landsat imagery reveal structures very much confined to the surface and may be hundreds of metres above the platiniferous reef horizons. This may lead to inaccuracies. When determining the underground structures for shaft sinking and mine planning, a 3D seismic survey is advisable. Too many shafts have been sunk in the Witwatersrand Basin for gold and in the Bushveld for platinum without sufficient information of the structure beneath. Recent 3D seismic surveys in the Bushveld have proven the technology and visualized the reef horizons and led to an interpretation of the underground structure (Figures 5 and 6). [ ]

The piloting and eventual large-scale operation of fixed-bed carbon columns for the recovery of gold from plant effluents is described. A fixed-bed carbon pilot plant comprising three adsorption columns was used for the recovery of gold from clarified plant effluent at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company (West Division). The effluent ,which contained 0,1 toO,S g/t of gold and less than 10 g/t of free cyanide, was adjusted to pH 8 prior to use. Daily acid treatment of the carbon circuit with 3 per cent hydrochloric acid was shown to have a most significant effect on increasing the gold adsorption. The acid treatment involved a plant downtime of only I to 2 minutes per day. High loadings of gold (up to 30 k g/t) and copper (up to 75 k g/t) were obtained on the leading column, while the gold recoveries averaged 98 per cent over 17 weeks of continuous operation. The subsequent elution of loaded carbon in a pilot elution column indicated the use of abnormally high amounts of the pretreatment reagent (caustic soda and cyanide) used in gold elution. This was attributed to the high loading of copper on the carbon. However, the elution of both the gold and the copper at 110°C with demineralized water as the eluant was satisfactory. In a similar large-scale operation, three fixed-bed carbon columns each containing 4,5 t of carbon were used to treat 80 to 120 t/h of plant effluent with a gold concentration of about 0,15 g/t. Gold loadings of 5 to 6 k g/t were obtained regularly, while the gold recovery averaged 97 per cent over a 12-month period. The capital cost of the plant was recovered in 2 to 3 months. The evidence presented strongly suggests that copper plays a significant role in the adsorption and elution of gold under the prescribed conditions, and in the subsequent precipitation of gold following acidification of the eluates. The formation of a highly insoluble gold-copper complex produced under acid conditions appears to explain many of the observations made in the investigation.

Successful management of mining operations depend on the accurate and reliable measurement of performance as a monitoring instrument in a feedback and control loop. However, when changes are being considered, the probable effect of the change on bottom line results requires different measuring techniques incorporating an in depth understanding which can identify hot spots in the operation which exhibit strong sensitivity to change. The CSIR's Division of Mining Technology has therefore been devoting a considerable effort to the establishment of techniques which enable changes to be analysed in terms of their impact on the two key parameters describing mine performance, i.e. profitability and safety. This paper describes these techniques, outlines their application to some example situations and discusses planned enhancements. The first section of the paper addresses the profitability model, and this is followed by a section considering the mine safety model.
