"The effect of some of the system variables in forcing and exhausting ducted fan systems on ventilation in an empty heading was investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and comparative analyses. The diameter of the duct, duct mouth to face distance, and the power of the fan (quantity delivered by the fan) were varied and their effect on ventilation determined through a comparative analysis of the flow rates calculated close to the face of the heading. Estimation models were developed, which can be used to calculate the flow rate close to the face of the empty heading for different settings of the system variables studied.The study showed that recirculation for a forcing ducted fan system can be reduced by increasing the duct diameter or increasing the duct mouth to face distance. For the exhausting ducted fan system, higher flow rates were achieved by reducing the duct mouth to face distance, andincreasing the fan design flow rate and duct diameter.The outcomes of this investigation will help ventilation engineers in deciding the optimum duct fan system required for sufficient ventilation.IntroductionThe ventilation of underground mines, irrespective of the type of mine and mining method, is divided into two broad branches, the primary ventilation and secondary or auxiliary ventilation. The primary ventilation is responsible for the total volumetric flow through the mine and the auxiliary ventilation is responsible for the ventilation of the development ends, production areas, and facilities disconnected from the main circuit with no through-ventilation connections. Auxiliary ventilation is the more difficult to achieve (Bise, 1996), and the disruption of this ventilation system is considered to be one of the primary factors contributing to methane and coal dust explosions (Creedy, 1996). A number of causalities have been recorded by many authors due to these explosions (Phillips and Brandt, 1995; Dubinski et al., 2011; Phillips, 2015). The ventilation of short headings, less than 10 m in depth, can be carried out without the use of any auxiliary equipment (Feroze and Phillips, 2015). However, for headings deeper than 10 m, auxiliary ventilation systems are required. These are generally classified into the three basic types, namely line brattice (LB) ventilation systems, ducted fan systems, and jet fans (Figures 1 through Figure 3 respectively)."

This article captures the intrinsic differences of thermal coal products, their utilization and their substitution characteristics. South Africa produces approximately 245 million tonnes of coal annually. Eskom consumes 46% (approximately 112 million tonnes), 26% (approximately 65 million tonnes) is exported, and SASOL Synthetic Fuels consumes 18% (approximately 44 million tonnes) and a further 9% (approximately 22 million tonnes) is consumed by domestic users in various different industries. Marketing theory contributes significantly to understanding the importance of technical product and quality appreciation and comprehension, encompassing elements of price, distribution, and promotion. Coal product specification is determined by the inherent geology of a resource and the number of complex actions to market the product to a specific consuming market. Sampling, analyses, beneficiation application, and an array of parameters contribute to matching thermal coal products to the value-in-use it provides to the different markets and its consuming industries. Coal producer shave come under increased scrutiny since South Africa has been experiencing electricity shortages since early 2008. General misunderstandings were declared on public forums and in the media by both legislators and the South African public since a perception developed that South African coal producers are exporting coal that could be utilized by Eskom.

Namibia's newest mining enterprise, the Navachab Gold Mine, was officially opened by President Sam Nujomo during June 1990. The mine is a joint venture between Erongo Mining & Exploration Company Limited, Metal Mining Corporation of Canada, and Rand Mines Windhoek (Pty) Ltd. Erongo has a 70 per cent interest in the mine, while Metal Mining and Rand Mines hold 20 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Anglo American Corporation and its associates hold two-thirds of Erongo shares and CDM (Pty) Ltd one-third. The Mine is managed by Erongo Mining & Exploration Company. The property is located some 10 km southwest of the town of Karibib and 170 km west-northwest of the Namibian capital of Windhoek (Fig. 1), the name of the Mine being taken from the farm on which the gold deposits were discovered. Navachab is an opencast operation and was brought into production in December 1989 at a cost of around R84 milion-RS,2 million under budget. The plant is designed to treat 840 kt annually at an average gold grade of 2,6 g/t. This wil produce 1900 kg of gold per year, which at today's prices will earn Namibia more than R60 million in foreign exchange.

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to more than 40 small, medium, and relatively large sized copper solvent extraction sites. To date, solvent extraction reagents supplied in this region have never exceeded 50% of ketoxime content. We generated laboratory extraction and strip isotherms and used these with the BASF IsocalcTM modelling software to assess the benefit of using higher ketoxime blends on the main metallurgical performance indicators such as copper recovery and net transfer. Pure ketoxime extractants combine a relatively low strip point and a decent loading capacity, which are most effective as the pH of the pregnant leach solution gets closer to 2.

Modelling and scheduling for Grootegeluk coal mine, situated in the north- western Transvaal, is by means of a series of modular systems. Modelling of the multilayered body, which is part of the Waterberg coalfield, was based on a detailed study of the behaviour of coal and waste qualities and the sub- sequent use of standard geostatistical techniques. A notable improvement on previous methods was attained. Scheduling procedures and systems were developed to model a multibench pit producing coal for several metallurgical plants as well as a power-station. Scheduling was done by producing a series of longitudinal cuts, the cuts being subdivided into increments. By allocating cuts to certain periods, the resulting calculated product tonnages were com- pared with production targets, and by iteration a final scheduling sequence was determined.

Boring of tunnels and shafts in hard rock under high stress conditions is becoming more common as mines and tunnels are developed at greater depths. Under the high stress conditions, fracturing of the often-brittle rock occurs in the walls, backs, and ahead of advancing faces of excavations. Fracturing can have a significant impact on boring activities: sidewall spalling, which affects machine gripper capacity, and fractures can also develop in the rock ahead of the face, leading to blocky rock conditions, which may have a significant effect on machine excavation. Fracturing may develop dynamically, leading to rock bursts manifesting in the form of strain bursts, which can be hazardous and destructive. In brittle rock, fracturing is commonly extensional in nature. The focus of this paper is on fracturing in the face of the excavation. Examples of such fracturing behaviour are described briefly in the paper. Numerical analyses were carried out to predict the initiation of extension fractures and their orientations ahead of excavation surfaces, and the resulting formation of rock slabs/plates, and the stability of these plates. The results should be beneficial for the evaluation of the conditions prior to, and during boring operations.

The concept of underground ore processing, in which valuable ore and waste are separated at a coarse particle size to improve the economics of operations and minimise the environmental impact, seems attractive from a sustainability perspective. Perceived benefits of such an operation include energy and cost savings due to a reduced hoisting load, a reduced footprint of surface operations, and using material for backfill that has not been contaminated by process chemicals. Progress in the South African mining industry in this area has however been below expectation, and opportunities for underground processing in deep, narrow reef operations were therefore explored by an Excel-based simulation with sensor-based sorting (SBS) as concentration technology. Various PGM mining scenarios incorporating factors such as the mining rate, depth of operation, and effects of dilution and particle size on the metallurgical efficiency, were compared. Whilst these initial results can be regarded as indicative only, they have shown that the economics of such an operation are driven by selective mining at significantly higher rates than achievable with conventional methods. Also, the cost of preparing, conveying and placing rock backfill will need to be lower than that of hoisting waste and depositing it on a surface dump. Another aspect to be addressed is whether ore sorting machines would be able to operate under harsh conditions underground and what provision would need to be made to ensure their efficient operation. Further investigations should focus on refining costs, incorporating environmental considerations in the modelling of economics and sustainability, and compare greenfields with brownfield scenarios. Mining executives often have a difficult task determining what the strategic objective of the business should be as this can be impacted by the prevailing market conditions. In addition, they have no mechanism to quantitatively 'test' the impact of this strategic decision on the business and understand the underlying dynamics. During the commodities bull run of 2003 to 2008 the strategic objective may have been to grow the long term value of the business (NPV) through increased tonnage, acquisition and finding new reserves, which all came with an increasing fixed cost base. Now with the financial crisis upon us and the collapse of commodity prices and demand, executives have adjusted their strategies as 'cash is king' and short-term cash flow, in some instances at the expense of long terms value, is the order of the day. For many mining companies, mine closures, reductions in production and cost cutting exercisers are now the focus. In many instances, management do not have an ability to rapidly test different strategic alternatives to 'test' the impact on value, unit costs, reserves and profitability at the operational level and optimize the underlying trade-off variables. Economic modelling of the complete business value chain is a means of linking the operational 'reality' and strategic choices, so that the full impact can be assessed. This paper describes some of the challenges facing mining executives and how economic modelling can be applied to make decision making more rigorous.

"The Mine, Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embodies worker self-regulation to advance health and safety in the workplace. An important provision for this is the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). This paper explores worker perspectives about the implementation of RRDW on South African mines against a backdrop of revised guidance in the sector: ‘Guideline for a Mandatory Code of Practice on the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work And Leave Dangerous Working Places’, gazetted in February 2016 by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). A mixed methods study conducted at mines (n = 14) included a survey of workers (n = 293), focus groups (n = 6) and in-depth interviews (n = 16). Workers reported a high level of awareness, a positive attitude, and experience of the formal RRDW. However constraints to the formal RRDW meant that informal worker resistance to dangerous work was commonplace. Evidence of informal non-confrontational consultation, cooperation, and collaboration in the event of a dangerous workplace also emerged between workers, and supervisors. The research underscores the importance of the RRDW and worker health and safety representatives to mine health and safety. The revised guidance addresses RRDW implementation gaps, but of concern is the potential partiality towards management interests. IntroductionEnsuring that mineworkers act on their duties and responsibilities for health and safety remains a concern across the globe. Article 13 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention Safety and Health in Mines (176 of 1995) entrenched the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW) as an important mechanism through which workers act in the best interests of their own occupational health and safety (OHS) and is considered a cornerstone of worker self-regulation (ILO, 1995). Countries ratifying Convention 176 are under obligation to make this right available to workers through OHS legislation that frames the circumstances, procedure, and protection of workers from discrimination in the event of a formal work refusal. The Convention has been ratified by 31 countries, with South Africa becoming a signatory in June 2000 (ILO, 2000). Worldwide studies show that workers use this right with caution (Hilgert, 2013) and cases associated with work refusal are rarely presented in court (Gunningham, 2007; Cooper, 2013). Rather, in cases of formal notification of a work refusal, issues arising out of this are addressed either in the immediate workplace or through the site OHS system and/or at industrial tribunals or similar mechanisms (Harcourt and Harcourt, 2000)."

"A methodology is proposed to develop an optimization model to understand the impact of transporting minerals, from mines to the final destination, on air quality. Recently, there has been increasing concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years, and the regional environmental changes brought about by a single project. Environmental issues in the iron ore industry have highlighted the need to broaden the cumulative impact assessment. In this study, we simulated the optimal routes and quantity of materials needed to meet the destination plant demand based upon environment constraints (level of air pollution), as well as the cost of transportation and availability of materials. Multiple scenarios were developed to analyse the effects of changes in routes, alternative transport system (or multi-modal split), traffic congestion, and the cumulative impacts on air quality. The air quality impact zones of the study area were demarcated using a GIS technique. The expected outcome of the study is the selection of a suitable transport system for a particular site with the least impact on air quality, including the transportation route, relative to the minimum cost of transportation of the minerals from the mines to their final destination. The proposed methodology is evaluated with a case study. IntroductionIn India, the process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been focused primarily on the local impacts of projects, without considering regional environmental effects. Environmental clearances for proposed projects are based on reports of local impacts. However, any developmental project poses a potential risk to the environment as a whole, and not just in the immediate vicinity of the project. Recently, there has been increased concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years—the regional environmental changes due to development of a single project (Dutta, Mahatha, and De, 2004). Environmental issues throughout the country, particularly in the iron ore industry, have emphasized the need to broaden the analysis to include the combined impacts, or those forecast for a proposed region, on an existing environment. The most significant adverse environmental consequences of iron ore transportation are the deterioration of biodiversity and air quality (Kumar and Ajay, 2015)."

Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. "In an earlier paper the author explored the consequences of price-stabilizing effects, on an industry-wide basis, of various production strategies. These ideas have now been applied to an illustrative case of an individual mine. It is shown that the turning of production and financial policies can affect financial performance over a five-year period by as much as 22 per cent.No generality is claimed for the results and they would differ from mine to mine. It is, however, asserted that the results show that the proper turning of production, reserves and financial policies are more critical determinants of mine performance than has been realised. It is also asserted that the methods of dynamic analysis are the most appropriate means for studying this policy-design problem."

A number of shallow coal or hard rock mines employ pillar mining systems as a strategy for roof failure control. In certain platinum mine layouts, pillars are designed to ‘crush’ in a stable manner as they become loaded in the panel back area. The correct sizing of pillars demands some knowledge of the pillar strength and the overall layout stress distribution. It is particularly important to understand the impact of the layout geometry on the effective regional ‘stiffness’ of the rock mass around each pillar. An important design strategy is to model relatively detailed layout configurations which include a precise representation of the local pillar layout geometry and to analyse multiple mining scenarios and extraction sequences to select optimal pillar sizes and barrier pillar spacing. Although computational solution techniques are now impressive in terms of run time efficiency, a major difficulty is often encountered in assigning suitable material properties to the pillars and in devising an effective material description of the layered rock strata overlying the mine excavations. This paper outlines an efficient numerical strategy that can be used to assess large-scale pillar layout performance while retaining the ability to modify individual pillar constitutive behaviour. The proposed method is applied to selected layouts to compare estimated average pillar stress values against values determined by detailed modelling and against observed behaviour.

"A petrochemical company experiences premature thermal fatigue failure of the casting moulds used in catalyst production. The aim of the project was to find an alternative alloy that would outperform the current low-alloy cast steel used for the moulds. Based on their thermo-fatigue properties, 3CR12 ferritic stainless steel and H11 tool steel were chosen for testing and comparison with the currently used BS3100 B7 cast steel. Samples of each material were subjected to temperature cycling in a Gleeble 1500TM thermo-mechanical processing simulator, followed by surface analyses. The main parameters derived from the test work were the total true strain, the hot strength of the materials, and the number of cycles to failure. Additionally, the coefficient of thermal expansion for each material was measured using a Bähr dilatometer. H11 tool steel yielded the best performance by way of having the fewest surface cracks, the lowest total true strain per cycle, the most cycles to failure, the highest hot strength, and the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion.IntroductionThe Catalyst Manufacturing Plant (CMP) is a dusty environment with temperatures higher than ambient. Molten mill scale (magnetite, Fe3O4) is tapped from the electric arc furnace into the casting moulds at temperatures close to 1600°C. After 10 seconds the magnetite is quenched with a water spray for 50 seconds to a minimum temperature of 400°C. Sometimes there is residual water in the pans from the cooling fog process (water sprays) in the empty mould. In a typical plant, the factory produces 40–44 batches a day containing between 150–300 moulds, depending on the time required for the specific batch (Buchholz, 2014). The typical batch in the CMP usually weighs about 6 t. The thickness of the tap, speed of the casting belt, and tilting angle all affect the number of moulds per batch.One of the main problems faced during the molten mill scale casting is the premature failure of the casting moulds. Cracks initiate on the surface of the mould, which is in contact with the hot catalyst, and propagate into the interior of the mould. Cracks are generally concentrated in the middle area of the mould where the catalyst makes first contact with the mould, and which experiences the highest temperature fluctuations. This suggests that the cracks are caused by thermal fatigue during the casting process."

The land disposal of voluminous fine-grained tailings from the processing of mined ore bodies poses a long-term risk to the surrounding environment and local communities, while also representing a loss of valuable natural resources; including water, land and mined minerals. To date, the development and practical implementation of alternative approaches and technologies for removing risk and reducing the burden associated with these wastes, particularly in South Africa, remains limited, and value recovery is largely limited to the extraction of precious metals. To this end, researchers at the University of Cape Town have developed a programmatic multi-phased approach to explore and develop opportunities for the valorisation of large-volume mine wastes, based on the innovation value chain. This paper outlines this conceptual approach and presents key outcomes from its application for the specific case of sulfide-bearing coal processing wastes from South African collieries. Through the application of a combination of qualitative and quantitative tools and methodologies, a number of potentially viable opportunities and processing routes for value recovery and bulk re-purposing of these wastes have been identified and tested on a laboratory scale. Studies have, however, also shown that there are several technical and non-technical factors currently constraining commercial application of these opportunities. Overcoming these constraints will require a commitment to innovative waste management approaches and effective multi-sectoral collaboration. An oolitic iron ore from Gara Djebilet, Algeria was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrosopy and the phosphorus distribution between various phases studied. Two ore types were identified – a haematite-dominated, oolitic type and a more massive, magnetite-dominated type. The haematite-dominated ore had a higher phosphorus content, up to 0.6% in the iron oxide minerals, than the magnetite-dominated type (0.3% P). Owing to the very fine-grained texture of the gangue minerals, reducing the phosphorus content to levels suitable for steelmaking (below 0.05% P) by conventiobal means would entail an energyintensive process with a high carbon footprint. Preliminary leaching test work using a sulphurous geothermal water as lixiviant, assisted by solar thermal acceleration, gave very promising results, removing 0.13% of the residual P (or 21.7% removal of total P) from the high-phosphorus oolitic ore.

"Drought conditions and the possible lack of sufficient raw water supply are a constant reminder to the Southern African diamond miner of the need to minimize raw (new) water input while maintaining or expanding mine throughput.Since water input volume is directly related to water output (loss) volume, mainly to the tailings, it is obviously beneficial to dewater the tailings as much as possible. However, this may not always be as easily achieved as first thought. Owing to the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the unique chemical profile of each raw water source, dewatering of the slurry is not a standard process that can be applied equally across the entire diamond industry.This paper presents a first-step strategy that kimberlite diamond mine operators should consider and apply to meet and exceed their watersaving targets. Introduction A common metric for measuring water use efficiency in a metallurgical plant is the amount of raw water used per ton of head feed treated (m3/t). The metric includes all water recycled from the dewatering process and from the tailings storage facility (TSF), and the only inputs are tons of ROM ore and cubic metres of raw water make-up to replace water lost to evaporation, seepage, and lock-up at the TSF (Figure 1).The volume of new raw water available to the process is not unlimited and a maximum monthly allowance is typically set during the mine permitting process. Consequently, if the volume of water lost exceeds the volume of new water available or alternatively, in times of drought where the allowable volume is unavailable, the plant has no other option but to reduce throughput.However, if the plant operator is able reduce the volume of water lost to the TSF, the plant will have additional capacity to either increase tonnage throughput or sustain nameplate capacity during periods of severe drought. The obvious conclusion, therefore, is to reduce the volume of water lost to the tailings by improving the efficiency of the dewatering process (typically gravity thickening) simply by increasing the density of the tailings being discharged. In practice, however, the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the chemical profile of the raw water source used imply that at some mine sites, solid/liquid separation (or settling) of tailings slurries at the dewatering process is more easily achieved than at others. In these cases, simple practical steps such as firstly improving the flocculant reagent make-up and dosing control, and secondly focusing on thickener discharge control, are the only requirements for enhancing water recovery at the dewatering circuit. At other mine sites however, solid/liquid separation of the tailings may not be achieved at all, in which case efforts to increase water recovery by improving reagent dosage and thickener control would be fruitless unless the colloidal properties of the thickener feed slurry are modified."

Preparation of suitable core specimens for physico-mechanical testing s not always possible, particularly for soft and clay-bearing rocks. Although several indirect test methods have been proposed to predict the properties of rocks, specimen preparation from soft rocks for some indirect tests is still difficult. For such cases, the needle penetration test has been developed. In this paper we present a study on the predictability of the physico-mechanical properties of pyroclastic rocks from the needle penetration index (NPI). The NPI, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity tests were performed in the laboratory on specimens from ten different locations in Turkey. Correlations were established between the NPI values and the physico-mechanical properties. Strong correlations were observed between NPI and both UCS and BTS. General correlations were found between NPI and both density and porosity.
