The heats of combustion of three chromium carbides, Cr23C6, Cr7C3, and Cr3C2, were determined by combustion calorimetry. Heats of formation calculated from the results follow: ?Hf°298 (Cr23C6) = -94.7 ± 5.0 kcal/mole, ?Hf°298 (Cr7C3) = -43.3 ± 1.7 kcal/mole, and ?Hf°298 (Cr3C2) = -22.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole.

The vapor pressure of manganese in equilibrium with a series of liquid iron-manganese alloys was determined by the carrier gas method over a broad range of alloy composition. From these data the activities of manganese in the iron-manganese system were calculated. The system appears to be ideal.

The West Lynn Canal subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is defined by Lynn Canal on the east, Davidson Glacier to the north, Icy Strait to the south and the Glacier Bay National Park Boundary to the west (figs. C-l and C-2). This area extends along the main-land west of Juneau (across Lynn Canal) northerly, to approximately 20 miles south of the city of Haines. The only roads in the area are relatively new logging roads at the southern end constructed to support a U.S. Forest Service timber sale. There is also local road access near the community of Excursion Inlet. Access to the remainder of the region is either by boat, aircraft, or 'foot. Helicopters provide the only time effective access to all but the coastal parts of the West Lynn Canal subarea. Coastal areas may be reached by small boat or float aircraft. There is an unimproved dirt airstrip just north of the mouth of the Endicott River. This airstrip is suitable for use by light aircraft. The subarea lies within the Tongass National Forest and is managed by the Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service. Approximately two-thirds of the forest lands are open to mineral entry under the current Tongass Land Management plan. The remaining forest lands comprise the Endicott River Wilderness area, which is closed to mineral entry. Private lands within the study area are sparse, with scattered homestead tracts along the coastal regions and in the Excursion Inlet area. Sealaska (Southeast Alaska Regional Native Corporation) also has land selections in the southern Chilkat Range. Tidal and submerged lands are owned by the State of Alaska.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field test program in the Pittsburgh coal seam to investigate the effect of water sprays in the suppression of respirable dust being formed while cutting with a continuous-mining machine. Emphasis was given to the location of spray nozzles on the top and bottom of the cutting boom. Results showed that (1) sumping caused about 60 percent of the dust escaping the face area, and shearing and loading caused the other 40 percent; (2) during sumping, top and bottom sprays were equally effective in dust suppression and reduced dust ~13 percent; (3) during shearing and loading, bottom sprays reduced dust 61 percent and were about 50 percent more effective than top sprays; (4) the combination of top and bottom sprays was slightly more effective than the separate systems, but water consumption increased 60 percent; and (5) inclusion of throat sprays decreased dust reduction by removing some of the water from top and bottom sprays where it was more effective.

This report describes the results of a program to design, procure, install, and evaluate a multi-channel underground telephone system of modern design in the Sunshine Silver Mine near Wallace, Idaho. Although the evaluation portion of the program was deleted, this report contains a cost benefit analysis for such a system using estimates of operational data for the Sunshine Mine. The results show a centrally switched telephone system of conventional design with ruggedized phone enclosures and special environmentally sealed dial pads to be the most economical.

It is estimated that 10,000 lives were lost and $285,000,000 worth of property was destroyed by fire in 1937. Of the 103 fatalities in tie petroleum industry in 1938, 36 resulted from fires and explosions.3/ Everyone can help to prevent the tremendous losses, both in life and property, caused annually by fires and explosions, Forest fires occur every year, in which the tremendously intense heat wave ahead of the flame turns beautiful green trees into blazing torches like so much gasoline, vapor, and jumps over the tops of trees to start fires behind the firs fighters; prairie-grass fires occur, and a farmer in the path of the fire must plow a furrow around his home and outbuildings before the flame reaches them; and frequently automobiles are burned up in filling stations. Persons who have witnessed such sights know better than to throw a lighted match, cigarette, cigar, or hot coal from a pipe out of an automobile or to discard a fire or flame of any type in the forest, in the country, or in the city.

The mining law of Chosen, which was made effective April 1, 1916, was promulgated as ordinance 8, December 24, 1915, in accordance with the provisions of articles 1 and 2 of law No. 30 of 1911. The new le repealed the mining law, Fo. 3 of 1906, and the placer mining law, No. of 1906, and in effect annulled all prior mining legislation. An amendment to the mining law of 1916 (by virtue of law No. 30 of 1911) vas. passed December 16, 1918, as ordinence o. 17. The detailed regulations, which were to supplement the law proper, and rich in all probability follow closely the regulations in force in the Empire, were not available. Unless otherwise indicated, references in this paper are to the mining law of 1916.

Tremendous interest has been evidenced in the subject of dewatering and drying ooal for the past 10 years, and yet little effort has been made to summarize the literature, at least so far as this country is concerned. Only a few published articles have dealt solely with dewatering and drying coal. In most cases the subject has been discussed briefly, either in general terms or as to specific installations. It is desirable that a compendium be prepared collecting in one place information on the dewatering and drying of coal, the needs for this process in various fields, the available equipment, and the current American practice in regard to it. This work was underta..lten by the :Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama. New coal-washing plants in which various types of dewatering and drying equipment were in operation were visited in-Pennsylvania; Ohio, India...~a~ and Illinois. The dewatering·and drying of coel has .been studied in this coimtry by the Surface Preparation ·Committee of the ·coal Operato~s• Committee of the .American Mining ·Oongress. Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

The solubilities of sideronatrite [Na2Fe(OH)(SO4)2?3H20] and ferrinatrite [Na3Fe(SO4),&apos;3H2O] were determined by the Bureau of Mines in the Na2SO4-Fe2O3-H2SO4-H20 system at 25°, 40°, 60°, and 90° C. The solution compositions investigated ranged from Na+-Fe&apos;+ mol ratios of 0.5 to >100 (Na2SO4 saturation) and H+ -SO4 2-mol ratios of 0 to 1. O. The results are presented in the form of contour plots. The solubilities were determined by seeding supersaturated solutions of known composition with the specified solid phase to precipitate a substantial amount of solid. Water was then added in small portions to the solution until the last portion of the solid dissolved. Equilibration times at 25°, 40°, 60°, and 90° C were 2 days, 1 day, 8 to 16 h, and 2 to 4 h, respectively. The accuracy of the solubility data is estimated to be 1 to 2 pet. Low iron solubilities of <0.36 pct Fe2(SO4)&apos;, or 1 g Fe/kg solution, were obtained in solutions containing at least 8 pet Na2SO4 in the absence of H2SO4 or a total of at least 36 to 38 pet Na2SO4 + H2SO4 at high acidity. The filterability and density of sideronatrite and ferrinatrite in comparison with other iron compounds are reported. These compounds are suitable vehicles for iron removal in Na2SO4-rieh solutions. Additional solubility data on the Na2SO4-H2SO4-H20 system were also obtained.

Approximately half of all the fuel energy used in the United states is now pro-vided by oil and natural gas. A persistent and rapid growth in energy demand during the last 3 decades has been absorbed largely by the liquid and gaseous rather than solid fuels. In 1948 the energy provided by coal was substantially the same as in 1920. Meanwhile, the use of oil and natural gas each had increased fivefold. On a per capita basis, the change is more significant. Coal consumption has dropped from about 6 tons per person to 4-1/2 tons, while oil has increased from 4-1/3 barrels to 14-1/3, and natural gas from 7,500 cubic feet to about 35,000. These facts would have only academic interest if the United States had unlimited supplies of all fuels. However, while the Nation&apos;s reserves of coal are adequate to meet our needs for centuries, those of oil and natural gas appear limited. It is obvious, therefore, that the security of our liquid-fuel position would be greatly enhanced if the supply could be based in an increasing degree on solid fuels, such as coal and oil shale, which make up more than 95 percent of our fuel reserves, instead of natural oil and gas. In addition, this would create new employment and help to stabilize the market for coal, which may be facing comparatively bleak prospects in the near future unless its position with respect to other fuels is improved.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with phosphate companies in the Florida land-pebble area, made a comprehensive study of the waste clays, or "phosphate slimes," produced in the mining of phosphate rock in Florida. These slimes represent a significant ecological problem and a major deterrent to effective land recovery in the phosphate-mining areas. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies were made of slime samples submitted by 15 of the 16 plants in Florida in an effort to identify factors that prevent successful consolidation of the slimes and subsequent recovery of the mined lands. Results of these studies indicated that the clay mineral attapulgite, a hydrated magnesium silicate, was primarily responsible for the very poor settling characteristics of the slimes, and that the quantity of attapulgite in the slimes effectively controlled the settling rate, pulp density of terminal solids, viscosity, percent solids of filter cake, and flocculant requirements.

The flammability and explosibility of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine ( UDMH ) were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to evaluate hazards associated with commercial application of this material as a missile fuel . This program included the following determinations : 1. Temperature limits of flammability in air at one atmosphere pressure ; 2. limits of flammability at selected elevated temperatures and pressures ; 3. 4 . 5. spontaneous ignition temperature in air at one atmosphere and at 200 pressure per square inch gage ( p.s.i.g. ) initial pressure ; spontaneous decomposition temperatures in nitrogen at one atmosphere and at 200 p.s.i.g .; shock sensitivity over a temperature range from about ( ca. ) 25 ° to 50 ° C .; 6. shock sensitivity of reference propellants ( hydrazine , nitromethane , methyl acetylene , etc. ) ; 7 . shock sensitivity of UDMH plus small amounts of selected metal catalysts . Part of the corresponding data was obtained for a mixture of unsymmetrical - dimethylhydrazine and diethylenetriamine ( U - DETA) .

Heat content measurements were conducted for GaPo.996 and InPo.986 over the temperature range from 298° to 1,100° K, and for In2S2.897 over the range from 298° to 1,200° K. Both the actual experimental data and values adjusted to conform with the stoichiometric compositions (GaP, InP, and In2S3) were reported. Entropy increments above 298.15° K were calculated for the stoichiometric compounds, and heat content and heat capacity equations were derived.

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The mines and prospects in the vicinity of Landlocked Bay, 25 miles southwest of Valdez, Alaska (fig. 1), were examined, mapped, and sampled in July and August 1955 as part of a comprehensive investigation by the Bureau of Mines of ore deposits adjacent to Prince William Sound. The purpose of the investigation is to establish and record the location, nature, extent, and metallurgical characteristics of copper and associated metallization in the Prince William Sound district and to indicate, if possible, those areas in which additional exploration and development may be justified. Of particular interest are the possibly numerous deposits of massive iron sulfides that were neglected during early mining operations. These deposits may constitute important reserves of sulfur and iron. At Landlocked Bay deposits of copper-bearing iron sulfide minerals have been mined or partly explored through mine workings, which are in a zone about 1 mile wide along the western side of a large overthrust fault known as the Landlock Overthrust. Eight of the principal mines along this zone were examined end sampled. Although only three of the mines have a recorded production of shipping-grade copper ore, all have deposits of copper-bearing iron sulfide minerals that are similar in occurrence. The deposits occur as lenticular masses and disseminations of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite which replace crushed rock or fill cavities along shear zones in greenstones and in sedimentary rocks that are exposed between sea level and an altitude of 2,500 feet. These lenticular masses of sulfide minerals range in size from small pods to ore bodies that have been stoped to maximum widths of 9 feet, strike lengths up to 70 feet, and dip lengths as much as 350 feet. Where accessible for sampling,, the copper content of the deposits ranged from a few hundredths of a percent to over S percent; zinc, gold, and silver are present in negligible amounts. Flotation tests of a sample composited to represent typical mine-run ore indicate that 81 percent of the copper is recoverable in a product assaying 28 percent copper at a concentration ratio of 17.5 : 1. INTRODUCTION Statistical records indicate that approximately 110,000 tons of metallic copper (about 16 percent of total Alaskan production) was produced from mines adjacent to Prince William Sound during the 40-year period ended in 1938. Although the principal production was from a large-scale mining and milling operation on Latouche Island (Kennecott Copper Corp., Beatson mine), a substantial amount of the total copper was derived from direct-shipping ores selectively mined or hand-sorted from numerous other deposits in the district. No production has been made since 1938; many of the claims have long been abandoned, and mine workings are either caved or deteriorating rapidly.

(2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.

This report describes in detail a unique occurrence of fersmite, (Ca, Ce, Na) (Cb, Ti, Fe, Al)2 (0, OH, F)6, which occurs as small anhedral inclusions and intergrowths with a tantalum-free columbite found in the metamorphic complexes of Ravalli County, Mont. Chemical and crystallographic data along with the physical and optical properties agree in general with those given in the original description of fersmite from the Ural Mountains of Russia. X-ray diffraction data not given in the original description and more specific optical data have been determined. The Montana fersmite, now established as the second occurrence of this rare calcium-columbate mineral, was discovered during a routine Bureau of Mines mineralogical examination of a prospector&apos;s sample.

The devitrification of lithium silicate glasses was studied to determine the effect of annealing temperature, composition, and additives on nucleation and crystallization. High-purity glasses, prepared from reagent-grade chemicals, had close to optical quality when prepared by a vacuum induction melting method developed during this research, The progress of devitrification was traced by differential thermal analysis and thermal expansion for those lithium metasilicate-silica compositions containing 80 to 90 percent silica. Microscopic studies of glasses partially devitrified at various temperatures and annealing times indicated that the primary initial mode of formation of individual crystals ,vas from densely crystalline zones that filled in as crystallization advanced Of the additives tested, calcium, potassium, and sodium helped promote devitrification with the least cracking or surface deformation. Tin oxide was most effective in reducing volume contrast ion during devitrification, but was not ClS effective in preventing cracking as calcium or potassium additions.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the theory, experimental procedures, and the results obtained to date in the development of the Bureau&apos;s process for magnetically roasting iron ores using scrap iron as a means of reduction. Since magnetic separation is an operational step common to magnetic taconite plants, the preliminary research studies emphasized only the novel magnetic roasting step. The studies included the use of automobile scrap, ferrous reductants such as borings and turnings, and prereduced pellets. Technical feasibility of the process was demonstrated both on a bench- and pilot-scale. Quality magnetic concentrates with recoveries of over 90 percent were obtained from a direct shipping ore containing 59.5 percent Fe and from fine grained semitaconites with about 30 percent Fe.
