"Two recent decisions by the Canadian courts could reduce the taxes paid by many profitable mines in Canada. At a time when the mining sector is hurting from an ever increasing tax burden and soft prices, the results of two cases are welcome news. Mining companies are well advised to check prior years' tax returns in the context of these developments. IntroductionSince 1976, the income tax legislation has provided a reduced rate of tax for taxpayers engaged in the mining of mineral resources, through the mechanism of the ""resource allowance"". The deduction given for the resource allowance effectively reduces the federal rate of tax by one quarter on resource profits. In general terms, ""resource profits"" are defined to include a taxpayer's income from: the production and processing in Canada of ore to any stage that is not beyond the prime metal stage (or the pellet stage or its equivalent in the case of iron ore); and, royalties computed with reference to the amount of value of production from mining operations in Canada.In computing income from these sources, the taxpayer must deduct expenses that may reasonably be regarded as applicable to those sources, with the exception of expenditures for Canadian exploration and development or financing costs.As a result of the mechanics of the calculation of the resource allowance, one quickly realizes that the lower the expenses deducted from the resource profits, the higher the resource profits and consequently the higher the 25% resource allowance. The impact of the recent court cases is to narrow the range of expenses which are required to be deducted in the determination of the resource profits.The two cases are outlined below."

Originally the focus of Deak Resources Corporation Business Plan was to establish a method for treating small gold and possibly base metal mineral deposits located in the Kirkland Lake - Noranda area of Northeastern Ontario, Northwestern Quebec at a central treatment facility. Since the establishment of this original business plan in 1988 other processing options have availed themselves for handling the base metal ores off site at a central facility which may preclude their processing at Deak.The site selected for the Deak processing plant was Kerr Addison's Virginiatown operation. At the time this property was acquired from the Receiver following Golden Shield Resources' Bankruptcy in 1989 the mill had been processing in the order of 1, 100 SDT per calendar day through one processing module; a module originally designed to process 1,500 SDT/day of a free milling gold ore. This tonnage level however had not been achieved since 1966 when an average throughput of 1481 SDT per calendar day was recorded.In order to realize Deak's overall Business Plan it would be necessary to expand the mills processing capabilities to provide:(1) A 2200 SOT per day circuit capable of processing a free milling, medium work index gold ore;(2) a 1 ,000 SDT per day flotation and/or cyanidation circuit capable of processing refractory gold bearing materials containing refractory minerals (i.e. copper) that should be removed prior to cyanidation; and possibly(3) a 1200 to 1500 SDT/day base metal circuit capable of processing the broad range of Deaks' Base Metal Property ores. If this circuit were introduced it would be completed in two tonnage phases.Further, it was recognized when operations resumed under Deak in 1990 that the existing tailings dam was suitable for, and had sufficient capacity for additional gold tailings with necessary physical modifications and changes in disposal techniques (including the construction of containment storage cells) that would allow storage for an additional 3.4 million tons of gold ore tailings approximately 1.0 million of which has been deposited since 1990. The focus of Deak's long term tailings disposal strategy is to acquire the Barber Lake Basin which is currently adjoined to our main tailings system which will provide an additional 10 million tons of storage capacity.

"Brunswick's primary flotation circuit (CuPb) produces a low grade concentrate containing considerable amounts of undesirable sphalerite and pyrite. To determine the cause of the poor selectivity, a series of Quantitative Mineralogical Analyses (QMA) were performed on several CuPb circuit streams. It was observed that significant fractions of sphalerite and pyrite reporting to the concentrate was liberated, meaning that their depression was not complete. The study highlighted the need for some R&D efforts to be spent in sulphide flotation fundamentals.IntroductionThe viability of many mining projects strongly depends on the performance of their concentrators. More than ever, competitive grade concentrate and high metal recoveries are criteria of paramount economic importance. The selectivity of solid/solid separation processes used in concentrators must be maintained at high levels or continuously improved.Flotation is the solid/solid separation process used by most base metal producers. In spite of its low operating cost, flotation remains a very complex process. To make it selective, precise reagent dosages and electrochemical conditions must be maintained. The difficulty in controlling flotation lies in the numerous heterogeneous reactions that can take place between the different solid, liquid and gaseous phases involved. This complex chemistry makes flotation selectivity difficult to understand and, therefore, to improve from a theoretical point of view.Brunswick Mining and Smelting, near Bathurst N.B., operates a 10500 tpd concentrator which produces four concentrates through five stages of sequential flotation (Figure I). Various reagents are added at key process stages while the ore undergoes different electrochemical conditions. Although the selectivity is important at all stages, the performance of the very first separation, the CuPb circuit, is the most critical. It is here where mineral misplacement to the wrong stream has the greatest economic consequences."

Realising the circular economy (CE) is faced with some significant challenges. Process metallurgy and its infrastructure play key roles at the heart of making the CE work. Therefore, the enabling role of process metallurgy within the CE will be central to the discussion in this paper, touching among others on product and system design as well as the key metallurgical and other process fundamentals that need to be investigated and understood to make the CE a reality. The central role of materials and its processing will be discussed in an integrated circular cities perspective. A key focus will be a discussion on designing a resilient “Smart Materials Grid” using and innovating metallurgical process engineering tools, which will manage the flows through Sustainable Circular Cities. The discussion will be using copper as leitmotiv of the discussion i.e. from copper ore, to metal, to complex products, recycling, product design and simulation and its impact. INTRODUCTION The transformation of our economies from linear to circular models in which waste materials become resources is the focus of the Circular Economy (CE) paradigm. Its important intentions: to take control of the damage we have been doing to the planet to ensure its livability and the welfare of future generations. This can only be achieved through careful utilisation of human, natural and economic resources. The concept is derived from several others (Beaulieu et al., 2015), of which Cradle-to-Cradle, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Industrial Ecology, and Life Cycle Thinking are just a few. Other relevant concepts include resource efficiency (RE), design-for-recycling (DfR), and various others discussed by Blomsma and Brennan (2017) and Homrich et al. (2018), as well as various R-hierarchies e.g. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R). However, does society comprehend these concepts, the actors and actions that influence them and how they interact? Do we know the limits of CE? Does society understand the key role of Copper and other metals to rendering the CE operable? True life cycle and systems thinking, focussed on simulation-based, process and metallurgical design are required to answer these questions. Lieder and Rashid (2016) identify nine widely-varying fields that study the concept ranging from sustainability sciences and engineering to economics, business, law, and social sciences. Overlap between questions addressed highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Nanz et al., 2017) in the assessment of the current status, and further steps needed to transform to CE. This doesn’t apply just in academia, but also in industry where concrete implementation of CE needs to occur at multiple levels, thus necessitating cooperation between government, civil society and other stakeholders (Beaulieu et al., 2015).

The Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology has obtained significant importance in the pyrometallurgy industry for nearly four decades. One of the advantages of TSL furnace is its high reaction rate, which is caused by splashing and turbulence of the melt. In contradiction, this phenomenon stands as a barrier for conducting experimental investigations to validate the simulation models. The highly turbulent and splashing environment in the TSL furnace is caused due to the immersion of the lance into the slag layer and thus the effect of the flame structure is directly related to the splashing, turbulence, reaction kinetics and life-span of the lance. Moreover, the material properties such as viscosity, density and the surface tension will also influence the flame structure. As a first step to understand the flame structure, attempts are made to generate a stable flame of the lance in an open environment. INTRODUCTION Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology was invented during the 1970s at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia by Floyd and Denholm. This technology was later commercialised and currently, there are about 100 TSL plants around the world commissioned by various licence holders such as AUSMELT (Outotec) and ISASMELT (Xstrata- Glencore Technology). Copper is the most produced non-ferrous metal followed by lead and zinc, see Hunt (2005). Today, a wide range of primary, secondary, and complex recycling materials are used as a feed material in the TSL, Alvear et al. (2010), Kaye et al. (2008). The working principle of TSL technology lies on inserting and submerging a lance from the top of a vertical cylindrical chamber into the slag layer. The lance is considered as the heart of the furnace, where the air and fuel are transported through two concentric tubes and are mixed in a combustion chamber, which is approximately 7 cm from the tip of the lance (considering the pilot-scale TSL furnace at the Institute for Nonferrous Metallurgy and Purest Materials - INEMET). The TSL furnace is very flexible with the type of fuel, feed material and the air input. The fuel can be natural gas/heating oil/fine coal particles and the air could be enriched with oxygen (Figure 1). The general mechanism of the TSL furnace lies on feeding the material from the top of the furnace and the material is pulled into the molten bath due to the high turbulent atmosphere, which results in high reaction rates. The thermocouples installed in the furnace (i.e. in the ceramic linings) allow the operator to know the temperature of the melt. For example, in the case of copper production the tapped material (i.e. matte/metal) can be transported to a settler for further processing or directly used.

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. Ces dernières sont les roches hôtes du diamant. Le Green River Basin recoupe les champs à lamproïte de Leucite Hills, au Wyoming et de Kamas en Utah, et il surmonte le craton archéen du Wyoming, connu pour la présence de ses diamants. The Buffalo Head Hills region is located approximately 350 kilometres northwest of the city of Edmonton in northcentral Alberta (Figure 1). The Alberta diamond joint venture consisting of Ashton Mining of Canada Inc., Alberta Energy Company Ltd and Pure Gold Minerals Inc. began exploring for kimberlites in the Buffalo Head Hills region in late 1996. At the time, the Mountain Lake diatreme, located 200 kilometres to the southwest, was the only reported kimberlitic rock in Alberta (Leckie et al., 1997, Figure 1). Exploration efforts since 1996 have successfully identified a new diamondiferous kimberlite province in Canada.

"Squall Lake Gold Mines, Limited, owns a group of claims at Squall lake, northern Manitoba, about 75 miles east of Flin Flon and 3 to 4 miles north of the Nor-Acme mine at Snow lake. Gold mineralization was discovered in this locality several years prior to 1944, but it was only in that year that a comprehensive examination of the occurrences was begun. Development work to the end of 1946 has been encouraging and the deposits show interesting relations to rock structure.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGThe gold occurs in a sill of biotite-hornblende diorite at or near its contact with gneisses derived from arkosic sediments . In detail, the contact between the diorite and the arkose to the southeast of it is irregular, with interfingering of the two rock types. On the northwest side of the sill, between it and Squall lake, the rock is staurolite schist (see accompanying sketch-map).Several mineralized shear zones are known, of which those shown are the most important. Within the zones, the diorite is silicified and somewhat carbonatized. Fairly coarse arsenopyrite is the chief sulphide mineral in these zones but, locally, they contain also pyrite and pyrrhotite. Where quartz and chlorite are present, rather coarse gold is associated with them. In that part of the main zone where gold assays have been most consistent, the diorite is rich in albite."

Non-swelling bentonite has been quarried in Manitoba by Pembina Mountain Clays Limited since 1941. It occurs in several thin layers near the base of the Pembina Member of the Upper Cretaceous Vermilion River Formation, and is quarried from the narrow outcrop belt along the slope of the Manitoba Escarpment. It is marketed both as natural and activated bentonite for a variety of specialized uses. Percolation of acidic water through bentonite has produced a naturally activated bentonite with good absorbent properties; these properties are enhanced by treatment with sulphuric acid to produce an activated bentonitefor decolourizing petroleum and vegetable oil.

"IntroductionBasal Proterozoic quartz-pebble conglomerates are found both west of Elliot Lake, in Duncan, Jarvis and Aweres Townships, north of Sault Ste. Marie and to the east and northeast of Sudbury, Ontario. Locally, while well packed and pyrite-rich, they carry little to no uranium. Locally, they carry gold. These features generally are ascribed to variations in the source areas of the rocks.In two other areas of Canada, similar basal Proterozoic units contain quartz-pebble conglomerate beds with uranium.Sakami LakeLocation and HistoryThe Sakarni Lake uranium deposit is found in a narrow, northeast-trending, Archean greenstone belt located 95 miles southeast of Fort George, on James Bay, and 240 miles north of Matagami, Quebec (Fig. 1).The deposit was detected by Inco in 1971, during an airborne EM survey which carried a newly developed Inco spectrometer system flown at 450 feet. Ground investigation, in 1972, resulted in the discovery and sampling of quartz-pebble conglomerate which yielded assays as high as 0.19% U3O8.Extensive field exploration was conducted between 1972 and 1975. Sixty-five diamond drill holes, to a total of 13,969 metres, served to define the extent and economic potential of the conglomerates which extend over a total strike length of about eight kilometres."

Location.-The property consists of eight claims (P-12339 to 12343, 12403 to 12405) in Robb township, adjoining Jamieson township on the west. Introduction Classified equipment originally installed in 1923 in the Britannia mill consisted of eighteen Model C Dorr Simplex classifiers, each in closed circuit with a pebble-mill. These machines were only three feet wide and of light construction, so that their raking capacities were necessarily limited, the maximum being about 20 tons per hour for each classifier. On conversion from pebble-mills to ball-mills, in 1924, attempts to increase circulating loads with higher rake speeds resulted only in overflowing a coarser product to the flotation cells. The elevator type of classifier was developed locally in 1935 and during that year two units, each having a sand carrying capacity of from 30 to 40 tons per hour, were installed. With such loads, a material increase in the grinding capacities of the ball-mills was noticed, and, after further development work on the elevator classifier, fifteen of the small Dorr classifiers were replaced by units of this type, capable of handling approximately 75 tons of sand per hour, with later alterations increasing this capacity to well over 100 tons per hour. In the meantime, the three remaining ball-mills had been placed in circuit with Dorr FX classifiers, one of which was six feet wide and the others five feet wide. Impartial and exhaustive tests conducted on the Dorr FX versus the elevator classifier showed the average results on these machines at Britannia to be substantially the same. A large amount of testing was carried on to determine the effect of circulating load on the output of the grinding units. This work indicated a rapid increase in the grinding rate as the ball-mill feed increased up to about 60 tons per hour, after which a relatively slow increase took place up to 100 tons per hour. No benefits were derived from higher circulating loads. A 300 to 500 per cent circulating load, depending on the nature of the ore treated, is considered to be within the economical range for the grinding of Britannia ores.

Metallographic techniques developed from studies of corrosion films and electroplated coatings on aluminum alloys, are discussed. These methods, the result of work at the Naval Research Establishment, give extremely flat fields at the interface despite the large difference in hardness, in cases where electrolytic polishing could not be used. Techniques to overcome the similarity in refractive index of immersion oil, aluminum ox1d~, and mounting plastic are also considered, as are methods for improving visual and photographic contrast in areas of interest. A device for marking specimens is also de-scribed. ELE•CTROLYTIC polishing is inapplicable in the study of surface films on aluminum, whether corrosion films or electrodeposits. Mechanical procedures must there-fore be followed. Sample flatness and edge retention are of paramount importance. Special measures are required in the study of oxide films, because of the close proximity of the refractive indices of aluminum oxide, mounting plastic, and immersion oil.

The main disturbance for stability in primary grinding using SAG mills is related to continuous changes in the ore being fed to the plant, such as size and hardness. Searching for stability is the first step to accomplish, before trying to maximize the mill throughput. The time variability in the characteristics of the ore being fed from the mine to the plant must be known or inferred to perform adaptive changes in the grinding process control. In day to day operation, such information is not available in real time. Transport times and inventories between the mine and the plant complicate the situation. Under this scenario, Minera Los Pelambres implemented a grinding optimization strategy, based on the real time analysis of certain process variables, such as ore size, mill current consumption, pebble generation and throughput. As a result, both grindability and stability indexes are inferred. This is equivalent to inferring the ore characteristics by knowing its effect on the grinding behavior. These two indexes permit control of the SAG mill total charge level and hence, allow optimization of throughput by means of an expert control system.

The staff of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting concentrator have developed a new type of reagent feeder. Several factors encouraged the development of such a system: varying heads caused by the mixing of ores from several mines, the increasing number of flotation circuits operated and reagent feeding stations remote from the flotation operator's work area. The reagent feeders also had to be compatible with future plans for reagent control from an on-stream X-ray analyzer and computer system. The new feeder is a positive-displacement pump set to deliver a constant volume per stroke. At a remote panel, the feed rate is altered by changing the time between strokes. The feeders have been found to be reasonably trouble-free and accurate to less than 2 per cent error.

This paper shows an approach that a gondola-typed robot recognizes walls on building facades. It is applicable for autonomous or teleoperated building façade painting robots. The robot may react based on the wall classification data. This approach is based on 2D LRF(two-dimensional Laser Range Finder). The robot acquires relative distances to walls, and a Kalman filter decides correspondence of walls. An ARS(Attribute Reference System) sensor helps convert LRF coordinate to global coordinate. The experimental results demonstrate the conversion of LRF data.
