"Aluminium rolling processing from ingots to cold rolled coils comes with a lot of challenges especially in controlling defective products in casting, hot mill and cold mill operations. Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). These tools and techniques are explained by an acronym DMAIC. D DEFINE the problem M MEASURE the variables in the problem A ANALYSE the variables of the problem I IMPLEMENT and verify the solution to the problem C CONTROL the solution to sustain it Most times in six-sigma approach, variations in the process that results in defects and customers’ dissatisfaction are targeted at 3.4 defects per million opportunities. There are numerous methods six sigma application use to achieve quality results and innovative strategies. Improving the quality of process through these methods helps identify and reduce variations which paves way for organisational excellence. "Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. Le présent article traite de ces questions, discute de la géologie du manteau, des principales roches-mères des diamants et de l’impact des processus dans le manteau, compare les propriétés et les caractéristiques des micro- et des macrodiamants et définit les étapes pour identifier et mitiger le risque de résorption des diamants et son impact sur la relation entre la taille et la qualité des diamants."

"The world's first zinc pressure leaching plant at Cominco's Trail operations started production in 1981. Sullivan zinc concentrate is leached at the rate of 190 tpd in a four-compartment autoclave at elevated temperatures and oxygen pressures to produce a zinc sulphate solution and elemental sulphur. Zinc extraction exceeds 98% and sulphide to elemental sulphur conversion exceeds 95%.The sulphur is recovered from the discharged slurry in the underflow of a hydrocyclone, and is upgraded as a flotation concentrate. The concentrate is dewatered, melted and filtered to produce a polished sulphur product of better than 99% purity. An alternative sulphur recovery process employs an unique sulphur separation method that recovers over 90% of the sulphur in the molten state. The remaining sulphur is recovered by flotation following flash discharge of the slurry. The product slurry containing the zinc sulphate solution and the iron-lead residue joins the existing roast-leach zinc plant for purification and zinc electrowinning.IntroductionIn 1981, Cominco Ltd. commissioned the world's first commercial zinc pressure leaching plant at their Trail operations in British Columbia. As part of a $700 million modernization and expansion program for lead and zinc started in 1977, the company installed the first o f two autoclave trains.Prior to pressure leaching, zinc production was closely tied to acid and fertilizer production. Sulphur dioxide produced from roasting the concentrates had to be converted to sulphuric acid. Thus, any expansion of zinc operations with the roast-leach technology would have required extensive modifications to the acid and fertilizer plants as well as to the roasters. Zinc pressure leaching, on the other hand, offered a one-step dissolution of zinc from the concentrates with high extraction, and production of elemental sulphur. The associated dust and sulphur dioxide generated in the roasting process are both eliminated from the working environment of the pressure leach facility. The flexibility allowed by producing elemental sulphur, and the opportunity to break the sulphuric acid link for about 25 per cent of the targeted 272,000 tonnes per year zinc production was very appealing. The process was successfully demonstrated at a pilot plant in 1977(1-6)."

"AbstractIn this paper a new type of durable 'spiral-rolled' drill set is introduced and its performance discussed. Efficient and economical mine drilling-depends to a great extent on durability of the drill-set employed. Premature failure of this element damages the drill bit and is costly when tungsten carbide bits are used.Time of drilling of 'spiral-rolled' drill sets introduced at present in Canada is considerably larger than for the presently used drill steel, but laboratory simulated service tests and practical field tests show that the 'drilling life' of the spiral-rolled drill set is several times that of ordinary drill steel.Some features of differential plastic deformation and differential surface rolling, so called 'spiral-rolling', are given.Relations between the drilling machine drill set and characteristics of the ore are discussed. The effect of shims on conical drill rod attachments, the mechanism of failure of drill steel, .and stresses during mine drilling, are analysed.IntroductionIN MINE DRILLING operations, the main interests are: the drilling machines as a source of working energy, the drill set as the tool transferring the working energy to the cutting edges of the bit, and, finally, the drilling characteristic of the .ore or waste rock.This paper includes a review of the possibilities of metallurgical and mechanical improvements in the drill set, with particular attention to drill steel and the attachments.For economical and efficient mine drilling operations, a durable drill rod, attachment, and drill bit are essential. The AE alloy family exhibits remarkable combinations of properties when utilized as high pressure die castings. This performance relies on the fact that the rapid cooling rate resulting from the direct contact between the molten alloy and the steel die walls effectively refines the structure through rapid solidification. Furthermore, the rare earth additions modify the solidification pattern, dramatically reducing the solidification interval. A solid shell forms at temperatures exceeding 500C, reducing the tendency for die sticking and inverse segregation. As a result, the die castability is excellent, giving parts with a smooth and shiny surface. Unlike other magnesium die casting alloys developed to improve elevated temperature creep properties, AE alloys do not suffer from the commonly observed tendency to introduce brittleness. This feature is attributed to the fact that the massive magnesium- aluminium intermetallic phase is substituted by a finely dispersed lamellar structure of Al-RE intermetallics. The resulting combination of excellent elevated temperature properties and good ductility, as well as excellent corrosion resistance, means superiority of these alloys for demanding automotive engine and chassis applications.

"In 1969, the Environmental Science Division of James F. MacLaren Limited received authorization from The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited to carry out a water quality monitoring program in the Lake Shebandowan region of Ontario, where a new base metal mining and milling complex was expected to go into operation in 1972. The objective of the program is to establish base-line water quality characteristics. Fully realizing their corporate responsibility to minimize the effects of the proposed activities on the environment, Inco decided that it would be desirable to establish a program by which any change in the quality of environmental waters will be detected before detrimental conditions ensue, permitting prompt corrective measures to be taken. The program has been in progress for over two years. The waters are sampled and analyzed four to six times per year. Sampling stations are located in Lake Shebandowan and on the adjacent Gold Creek - Matawin River system. On-site analyses and measurements are made of flow, dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH. Samples also are collected for later analysis in the laboratory. These samples are analyzed for a wide range of chemical and biological characteristics. The paper discusses the extent of the sampling program, the techniques utilized and the value of such programs in maintaining the quality of the environment."

Formulas relating economic optimum busbar cross sectional areas to busbar cost, electric price and financial parameters are reviewed and revised. Application of the formulas is illustrated with discussion of the appropriate choice of parameter values and the sensitivity of the optimum to the parameters. The extension of the single busbar concept to optimization of more complicated arrangements of bus for smelting pots is complicated by the constraint of obtaining a specified current distribution. An example problem illustrates the optimization of a section of a bus network containing a fork, with the imposed limitation of achieving a specified uniformity in the current. In cases where the current in the individual conductors may vary, Kelvin's law does not apply. Further extension of the technique to a full pot set of conductors poses additional problems which are discussed, but whose solution has not yet been accomplished. The kinetics of the oxidation of uranium(IV) by oxygen gas in aqueous systems is dependent on acid concentration, oxygen partial pressure, and temperature. In order to better understand the relationship between these variables and the speed of oxidation, a series of experiments have been conducted where each parameter has been varied in turn. Data were collected continuously using UVVis spectroscopy, allowing for a detailed examination of the reaction rate over the course of each experiment. The data fit an overall apparent rate law that is 1.5order in uranium(IV), -2order in H+, first order in oxygen, and unaffected by uranium(VI). This relationship does not appear to hold for solutions with <0.2 mol/L initial acid, where a different kinetic mechanism appears to be dominant.

The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively in a number of publications. The focus in most of these reviews has been on the theories of gold flotation as well as the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. It is evident that the current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been addressed widely. It is the intent of this paper to review current gold flotation practice and how these applications tie in with the current understanding of the chemistry of gold flotation.

Methanol treatment of ZnS particles has been found to remove slimes and facilitate flotation. The removal of slimes renders the ZnS surface more hydrophobic, resulting in an increase in the hydrophobic attractive force between the particle and bubble. Hallimond tube flotation, induction time measurement and particle-bubble force analysis with the atomic force microscope (AFM) was undertaken to link the beneficial effect of methanol treatment of ZnS particles to their increased floatability.

For a number of reasons, solids entering and leaving facilities for the treatment of minerals are becoming increasingly finer. Such materials pose problems throughout processing. Solids featuring small particle sizes tend to dusting, result in losses and segregation, exhibit various storage, transportation, and metering problems, and fine particulate effluents can not be easily captured, used and/or recycled. Sustainable mineral processing must minimize the exploitation of natural resources and avoid the need for disposal of wastes. The first requires the use of lower quality raw materials and upgrading, which typically results in the production of fine grained concentrates, and the latter encourages the recycling of wastes and byproducts or efforts to investigate them as sources for secondary raw materials or other beneficial applications. To overcome the difficulties associated with fine particulate solids, size enlargement by agglomeration is necessary. The resulting products have free flow characteristics, do no longer dust or segregate, and are sized and shaped as required for optimum processing. In addition, agglomerated materials may be engineered to feature desirable structure, composition, and a number of related, improved properties. Such engineering may be applied for the modification of fine run-of-mine and up-graded minerals as well as the production of secondary raw materials from by-products or wastes. By the interdisciplinary application of size enlargement by agglomeration waste-free processing of minerals becomes feasible.

Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

This case study presents the results of a maintenance review of a soot blower system at a coal fired power generation station. The power generation station was following a ?repair when it breaks? maintenance strategy for its soot blowers. The efficiency losses incurred as a result of failures in the soot blower system and the resulting interruption and out of service time was found to have a significant effect on the plant output. The maintenance strategy for the soot blowers was reviewed using Reliability Cantered Maintenance and lifecycle simulation. This methodology provided visibility to the monetary implications of failures and allowed alternative types of maintenance to be assessed and where justified were added to a maintenance schedule in the Maximo work order management system. By reducing unplanned breakdowns the predicted reduction in efficiency losses was 45%.

There are many honor stories about aluminum in the marine environment and many are not based on facts, so they are myths. Myths must be addressed before progress can be made. This paper attempts to dispel the myths and state the facts. A common perception is that aluminum ships cost significantly more than steel ships. This paper illustrates that even though the cost of the aluminum structure is over 50% more than the steel structure, an "equivalent" aluminum naval ship can be built within 7% of the acquisition price of a steel ship. This is possible because of the cascading benefits of the aluminum ship&apos;s significantly lighter weight. Aluminum ships also have a life-cycle cost advantage over steel ships because of reduced maintenance and fuel cost savings.

Before 1950, hot working was simply deforming above the recrystallization point and gave a soft product compared to cold working. From 1960 onwards, improved testing in compression and torsion (stress, strain rate, temperature, quenching) provided valid specimens for microstructural analysis by polarized optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Indeed, TEM was essential to uncovering the hot working mechanisms because it could distinguish between cold and hot substructures (dynamic recovery) in either initial or new grains (dynamic recrystallization). Over the years, teams at Concordia, McGill and UBC obtained NSERC support for students and equipment. CANMET built up a hot forming group having capabilities from high-rate cam-plastometer compression to rolling of experimental alloy billets; this was combined with latest metallographic instruments for fundamental research. Al alloys of every class (2000, 3000, 5000, 7000, 8000) were studied to understand the effects of solutes, precipitates, dispersoids and composites. The complex flow patterns in extrusion were clarified and modeled by finite element methods. Physical simulations of rolling schedules (up to 20 passes and reductions of 98%) by torsion provided evidence of microstructure development during both the passes and the softening intervals, thus clarifying development of texture in different alloys. "In the Blind River area Proterozoic clastic and sedimentary rocks and minor volcanic rocks (The Huronian Supergroup) uncomformably overlie and trangress northwards over dominantly granitic Archean terrane (2500 + Ma) and are intruded by Nipissing Diabase (2ll5 Ma). Later deformation and metamorphic events are recognized. The developing depositional basin was controlled by the incipient Great Lakes Tectonic Zone marginal to the Algoman Craton.The Matinenda Formation (basal Huronian) comprises northwards-derived fluvial arkose, quartzite, and pyritic, uraniferous oligomictic conglomerate which contained in 1981 some two-thirds of Canada's uranium resources. Production to December 1981 from Elliot Lake totalled 98.3 thousand tonnes U for an average recovered grade of 0.1% U with an additional 671 tonnes U recovered by leaching at Agnew Lake. The remaining resources are at lower grades. Some thorium and yttrium have been produced. Minor amounts of gold reflect the paucity in the source area. Gold is better-developed in the Huronian north of Sudbury reflecting the local source area.The conglomerate beds lie in southeasterly-striking zones controlled by basement topography down sedimentation from uraniferous Archean granite. Uraninite textures, the distribution of monazite, and local enrichment by reworking indicate a syngenetic, probably placer, origin of the mineralization. ""Brannerite"" has formed by solution of uranium from the margins of the uraninite grains and redeposition on the original titaniferous minerals. Penecontemporaneous volcanics may have been a source for sulphur in some of the pyrite and of trace amounts of Co, Ni and Au. Some pyrite may be detrital, some may be authigenic and some introduced.Drab coloured rocks, uranium and sulphide mineralization, the presence of hydrocarbon (thucholite) and a post-Archean regolith formed under reducing conditions have been cited as evidence of an early Precambrian reducing environment extended to the atmosphere. Sedimentary features indicating fast-flowing water and possibly a cold climate imply that the uraninite would be exposed to whatever oxygen was present in the atmosphere under conditions which would inhibit complete solution. In the upper Huronian, red beds and in the Lorrain Formation a monazite - iron oxide assemblage and copper mineralization indicate more oxidizing conditions. . Similar uranium deposits occur at Agnew Lake and in the basal Huronian north of Sudbury there are minor uranium and gold values.Provenance, lack of complete oxidation, transportation and depositional processes, redistribution during diagenesis and possibly low grade metamorphism, and the lack of post-depositional destructive processes are the dominant factors in the formation and preservation of the ores. The modified placer theory of genesis is well entrenched and an exploration model for such deposits throughout the world is well-documented.Research continues on mineralogy and textures of the ores, detailed sedimentology of the ores and their host rocks, with particular emphasis on: provenance area, the influence of early Precambrian mineralization patterns on the mineralization present in the Huronian both in space and in time, fluvial sedimentation and diagenesis. Expansion and reopening of the mines of the Elliot Lake camp should facilitate further studies."

In 1997, the Zinifex Hobart Smelter ceased ocean disposal of jarosite and the flowsheet was converted to reject iron as paragoethite. This paper describes the evolution of the flowsheet since the changeover and considers future flowsheet developments. The major change to the flowsheet has been an increase in the silica content of the calcine resulting from treating increasing levels of Century concentrate. The high silica levels impacted on the paragoethite precipitation stage, causing a deterioration in the settling and filtration characteristics of the paragoethite and an increase in the contained zinc level. The implementation of a two stage neutral leach step has enabled the flowsheet to cope with the higher input silica levels. Future developments include an understanding of the form of the zinc in the paragoethite and options to lower the zinc level to improve the overall zinc recovery.

Jinping I hydropower station is located in Sichuan Province in Southwest China. It is built on the Yalong River as a controlling cascade hydropower station in the middle and lower reaches, with power generation as its major function. Jinping I arch dam concerns many engineering issues and has attracted worldwide attentions due to its huge scale and unique settings. It is one of the most challenging projects in China with its 305 meters high arch dam and complex geological conditions for construction, including large-scale tectonic faults, intensively unloaded rock masses and geological asymmetry in its foundation. At present, the concrete arch dam construction has been completed and preliminarily impounded, most of the foundation treatments have been implemented, and four of six generator units had been put into operation in July 2014. In this paper, the analytical methods, design concepts, treatment measures and technical features of strengthening the geological defects in the dam foundation will be presented. Upon geological investigation into the dam foundation, a few large-scale weak discontinuities are observed. The rock masses in the left dam foundation are intensively unloaded, approximately to the horizontal depth of 150–300 m. These serious geological defects lead to a geological asymmetry on the left and right banks, and thus some major difficulties of dam construction are encountered. The influences of geological defects on the dam construction and safety are analyzed comprehensively, followed by the concepts and methods of treatment design. Based on this, the treatment methods of the weak rock masses and discontinuities are carefully determined by numerical analysis and scheme optimization, including the concrete cushion, concrete replacement grids, drainage system, anti-seepage curtains and consolidation grouting, which work together to enhance the strength and integrity of the dam foundation. Evaluations and calibrations through geo-mechanical model tests in combination with field monitoring results in early impoundment period show that the arch dam and its foundation are generally stable and function normally, which suggests that the research methods and treatment design schemes are reasonable and effective. The proposed treatment methods and concepts in the context are helpful for similar complex rock projects.

"Abstract - This is the first reported occurrence of an active hydrothermal field in an oceanic fracture zone setting. The hydrothermal field occurs in a pull-apart basin within the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which has four distinct mineral deposit types: (1) barite mounds and chimneys, (2) barite stockwork breccia, (3) silica-barite beds, and (4) silica, barite, and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide in sediments. All deposit types contain minor amounts of sulfides. In barite stockwork, silica-barite beds, and mineralized sediment, Ba, Pb, Ag, S, Au, Zn, Cu, Hg, Tl, As, Mo, Sb, U, Cd, and Cu are enriched relative to unmineralized rocks and sediments of the BFZ. Fe and Mn are not enriched in the barite stockwork or silica-barite beds, but along with P, Co, and Mg are enriched in the mineralized sediments. Silver contents in deposits of the hydrothermal field range up to 86 ppm, gold to 0.7 ppm, zinc to 3.2%, copper to 0.8%, and barium to 22%.Mineralization occurred by diffuse, low to intermediate temperature (mostly <250°C) discharge of hydrothermal fluids through pillow lavas and ponds of mixed volcaniclastic and biosiliceous sediments. Bacterial mats were mineralized by silica, barite, and minor Fe hydroxides, or less commonly, by Mn oxyhydroxides. Pervasive mineralization of bacterial mats resulted in formation of silica- barite beds. Silica precipitated from hydrothermal fluids by conductive cooling and mixing with seawater. Sulfate, U, and rare earth elements (REEs) in barite were derived from seawater, whereas the REE content of hydrothermal silica deposits and mineralized sediments is associated with the aluminosilicate detrital fraction. Fe-, Zn-, Cu-, Pb-, and Hg-sulfide minerals, Ba in barite, and Eu in all mineralized deposits were derived from hydrothermal fluids. Manganese oxides and associated elements (Co, Sb, Mo, W, Cl, and Cu) and Fe oxides and associated elements (Be, B, P, and Mo) precipitated as the result of mixing of hydrothermal fluids with seawater."
