As high grade ore deposits are depleted, remaining deposits are generally lower grade and require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. These low grade deposits often contain a large proportion of barren gangue. Pre-concentration aims to remove this barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible. This has the potential to reduce processing costs, energy and water consumption, increase production and improve resource utilisation.There are several technologies that may be applicable for pre-concentration. This paper looks specifically at bulk ore sorting and how it can be integrated into existing or new mining operations to improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Bulk ore sorting is the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor measurement. It may be used to increase the production rate through fixed plant capacity, or increase production and/or reduce the size of downstream processing equipment in Greenfield operations. Marginal ore sub-economic reserves may be upgraded, making them economic to treat and improving the resource utilization. Bulk ore sorting could also be used to reduce dilution and ore loss in mining operations by improving grade control, or to separate ore types to treat via different process routes. Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (<1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015. Open pit mining has considerable damaging effects on the environment of the mining region. These harmful influences have to be controlled during mining operation until mine closure. Different sections of mined land, such as; pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined, have to be reclaimed through treatment of environmental pollution and implementation of a permanent post mining land use (PMLU) after mine closure. Implementation of a permanent optimal post mining land use (OPMLU) is one the most decisive criterion which effects on reclamation procedure, mine closure and their costs. Therefore to define ultimate pit limit (UPL), mine closure and reclamation costs should be entered in the calculation iterations same as the other variable costs of the projects. Estimation of closure and reclamation costs of a mining project is carried out based on the attained OPMLU and the specifications of the mine site. In this paper, a model is developed to provide OPMLU for pit area through fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (FMADM) technique. The model was implemented on a hypothetical copper mine in northwest of Iran as a case study. Lumber production was selected as OPMLU for the pit area. It is finally concluded that through the developed model, OPMLU for different sections of mined land in an open pit mine project is defined. Also closure and reclamation costs are estimated based on the defined OPMLU to achieve a more accurate UPL.

Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

Sluiceboxes can provide a much higher concentration ratio than most other gravity concentrators (up to 50 000:1) at very high overall placer gold recoveries (greater than 99 per cent). They are also very reliable, inexpensive and simple to operate. This combination is very difficult to beat and explains why the sluicebox is still the most important placer gold concentrator in northwestern Canada, Alaska and the rest of the world. A sluicebox is a rectangular fl ume containing riffles on matting, through which a dilute (<12 per cent) slurry of water and alluvial gravel flows. Sluiceboxes are actually centrifugal concentrators with settling velocity playing a minor role in gold recovery. Due to their higher density, gold particles tend to segregate to the bottom of the slurry flow where they form a streamline that is diverted by a low pressure zone into a riffle. Under ideal conditions, this ribbon of slurry will be overturned as it flows down the rear of the following riffle and will continue fl owing in a circular path to form a vortex. At the bottom of this vortex, centrifugal and gravitational forces combine to drive gold particles into or beside the matting. To remove the gold concentrates, sluiceboxes are shut down and the riffles and matting are taken apart and cleaned. The slurry velocity provides the energy that powers the vortex. If the velocity of the slurry is reduced through overloading with solids, insufficient water flows or shallow gradients it may not sustain a full size vortex. If the riffles are too close, too far apart, too tall, or if there is not enough energy available to the vortex, the vortex will not be formed properly and gold recovery will be reduced. If the slurry velocity is too high, extreme turbulence and the resulting scouring will also cause gold losses. Testing sluiceboxes with conventional sampling and evaluation techniques is very costly, time consuming and problematic. Most placer gold ores contain a very small number of gold particles in a large volume of pay gravels. Sluiceboxes can lose coarse gold particles. The presence or absence of one of these particles in a tailings sample can lead to high unpredictable errors (nugget effect) even when large sample volumes are processed with care. Every time conventional samples are upgraded, additional errors are introduced due to the inefficiency of recovery equipment. Nuclear tracer tests are more accurate, faster, cheaper and safer than conventional sampling. In 1989 through 2002, the recovery efficiency of dozens of sluicing systems was determined by mixing radioactive gold particles (tracers) into the feed streams of dozens of placer mines in the Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alaska and Guyana. Four distinct sizes of nuclear tracers were used and their recovery was related to the design and operational characteristics of the individual sluiceboxes and their pay gravels. At clean up, scintillometers were used to detect the very low level X-ray and gamma ray radiation emitted by these tracers and locate them in the sluice runs. The effectiveness of any given section of riffles was easily diagnosed by the presence or absence of tracers. At every mine the gravel feed rates, water flows, equipment dimensions and riffle performance were measured. After the gold tracers were removed from the fi nal concentrate and counted, the concentrate was sieved and weighed. These gold recovery, weight and sieve data were used to calculate the quantities and size distributions of the gold particles in the original pay gravels and those lost in the tailings. The expired tracers were stored in a lead lined container until their radioactivity was near background levels (about two months). The standard errors from these radiotracer tests were estimated from binomial probability theory with the equation: SE = {(n + p + q) ^ 0.5}/n. Where n was the total number of radiotracers added, p is the proportion recovered and q was the proportion lost. Each overall recovery estimate would be within one standard error of the true recovery value (14 times out of 20) and almost always within two standard errors of the true recovery (19 times out of 20). The maximum standard error with 100 tracers was five per cent and occurred when the recovery approached 50 per cent. With higher recoveries, standard errors usually ranged from one to two per cent.

This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330 lb/sq. in. tension to 3,750 lb/sq. in. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock model mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a borehole extensometer and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face was advanced the roof movement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The majority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a radioactive isotope and a scintillation counter in a pair of parallel boreholes is a sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of strata stresses is required to understand the deformation of an underground opening and, in particular, the roof behaviour. It is the aim of investigations currently being conducted by Australian Coal Association (Research) Ltd. to determine the stress existing around mine openings and the location and magnitude of roof movement.STRATA PRESSURE MEASUREMENTMost measurements of strata stress are performed at the surface of underground openings and the majority measure the change of strain resulting from stress relief. The accuracy of the measured value of stress depends upon knowledge of the rock modulus of elasticity. The flat jack method has the advantage that strain relief is restored by a measured stress applied directly by the jack. The rock modulus of elasticity can also be determined.

After an unsuccessful transfer from the laboratory to the pilot plant of galena flotation technology which used sodium metabisulphite and ethyl xanthate, laboratory flotation tests were conducted to identify any unusual variables which had a deleterious effect on the position of the lead rougher grade recovery curve for Hilton and Mount Isa silver-lead-zinc ores. Two variables (pulp temperature and contact time for ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite) had important deleterious effects.The findings allowed a successful transfer of the laboratory process to a pilot plant scale process. The effect of temperature was important because the higher temperature (40°C) in the pilot plant pulp increased significantly the rate of reaction between ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite. In the laboratory process at 20 to 25°C, the reaction rate was lower and did not interfere significantly with the process. The contact time for the two reagents was also important in the pilot plant scale process because of the higher reaction rate at 40°C.To employ ethyl xanthate in the pilot plant process, special precautions were required. Further, a collector (Aerofloat 241) from the dithiophosphate family was used successfully in the pilot plant process.

The paper describes a mineral potential mapping of gold and other base metals in Mahneshan area, Iran, using geographical information system (GIS), in which, the method of weights of evidence is used to combine spatial data obtained from different sources to make prediction for mineral potential. This is a quantitative tool for mineral resource mapping that can be used to delineate and predict favorable areas for further exploration by using the characteristics of known and similar mineral deposits. In accord with the descriptive model for gold and other base metal deposits, the spatial distribution of 20 known mineral occurrences was used. In addition, digital evidential maps were used in this study. The maps include maps of lithological units, faults and first derivative of total aeromagnetic data, remotely-sensing data of alteration and also geochemical evidential maps produced on the basis of the results of chemical analyses of samples taken from the stream sediments in the area, and analysed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, As, Ag, Au, Ba and Hg elements. The binary maps were produced and then combined with the model of weights of evidence using 20 known mineral occurrences to obtain a final map of the favourable areas for further exploration of gold and other base metals in the study area. The final map is a predictive GIS model of the mineral deposits in the area. An interesting matter about the final predictive GIS model is that the faults are mainly located in favorable areas which possesses the most probability of mineralisation. Therefore, the faults in these areas have priority for further exploration of gold and others base metals.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. A number of people have expressed concern, understandably, that if mining operations take place in the Coromandel, the flows of mineralised ground water which exist will be intercepted. This water in many cases contains toxic metals including mercury, arsenic and lead and it is thought that if this water is allowed to enter streams or the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it could endanger natural marine life and possibly established fisheries. This paper seeks to explain in simple terms the geology and the process of deposition of the various mineral deposits in the ground, the chemistry of the reactions between these minerals and the rain water falling on the ground, the hydrology and behaviour of this mineralised groundwater as it moves through the ground until it eventually enters the sea.

The oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is discussed from several viewpoints. Limitations of our present knowledge are pointed out, and several points where further information would be of special interest are mentioned.Firstly, some properties of minerals and their effect on oxidation are discussed. Properties of different species, such as crystal structure, lattice bonding, and "metallic" properties are mentioned, and then the effect of variation within a given species is discussed. The effect of physical factors, especially particle size, is also considered. Other variables discussed include the importance of solution composition, and its effect on the nature and rate of reaction, and the use of various oxidising agents. Some factors concerned with the whole system, such as temperature, pulp density and stirring rate are then considered.Finally, the nature of various oxidation products is discussed with reference to the kinetics of reaction and the nature of the rate limiting step. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to electrochemical explanations of the reaction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the factors governing the rate of oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is a prerequisite for the effective control of many ore treatment operations. Rapid oxidation of sulphides is usually desired during the leaching of sulphide ores and concentrates, but in the cyanidation of gold ores, or in the leaching of uranium ores, any oxidation of sulphides may be regarded as an undesirable side reaction. Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...

The method of investigation was to study the distribution of ore in great detail, to make a thorough structural study of the lode and the mine area, and then to compare the results of the two studies. Such a comparison usually reveals a very close relationship between geological structure and ore distribution, and can often lead to important conclusions which would not be reached in the ordinary working of a mine.The Triton mine lies 30 miles E.N.E. of Cue, or 380 miles N.W. of Kalgoorlie, in typical pre-Cambrian rocks, consisting of gTeenstone lavas and tuft's, interbedded with slates and some sediments, and intruded by granite and porphyry. Fig. 1 (at end of paper) is a longitudinal section of the mine and shows that the workings consist of the main North Emu and the smaller South Emu, separated by a distance of about 1 of a mile. Both orebodies occur on the same lode, which strikes north and south and dips practically vertically. On the same line, and of 1/2 a mile and a mile respectively to the north of the North Emu, are the small Rand and North Rand workings, where a big width of lode material has proved to be very low grade. In the North Emu the lode width averages 12 to 15 feet; it is seldom less than 5 feet and in places reaches 30 feet. In the South Emu the lode is wide, but only portion of it is payable.The lode is a mineralised bed occurring between massive lava flows on the east and a mixed series of tuft's and thin lava flows on the west. The lode material is hard, fine grained, and dark coloured, and generally has a faint banding which is believed to indicate a tuft'aceous origin of the original lode rock. Microscopic examination shows that the original lode rock has undergone considerable albitisation;' there has also been considerable formation of biotite which gives the lode material a characteristic sheen. The mineralisation consists of abundant fine pyrite, which is auriferous, and a lesser development of pyrrhotite which is, however, barren of gold.THE OREBODIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICSThe distribution of ore is best studied from gold contours, as these reveal features that cannot be detected in an ordinary assay section. Gold contours (see Fig. 3) are developed' by plotting the width and grade of all development and stoping assays throughout the mine on a longitudinal projection, representing each sample by a coloured dot according to a suitably chosen range of assay values, and then outlining areas of similarly coloured dots (see H. J. C. Conolly, Econ. Geol., April, 1936). Both width and grade must be taken into account and the simplest method of gold contouring is to use dwt.lft. values, but difficulties arise here with big widths of low grade and small widths of high grade ore. To choose an extreme case, 30 ft. of 2 dwts. and 2 ft. of 30 dwts. both equal 60 dwts.lft., and would therefore be given the same value in dwt.lft. contouring...

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. Since its inception in 1990, improved metallurgical processing technologies, coupled with mine planning enhancements and improved geological knowledge, have sequentially enabled better efficiencies and economies of scale at the Macraes Gold Project. Over a period of 11 years, processing enhancements have been achieved by: +        increasing mill throughput, from one million tonnes per year, to current throughput of 3.9 million tonnes per year; +        improving recovery rates, from 70 % to approx 84 %; and +        performance enhancement through innovation, eg the use of kerosene to combat ClL pregrobbing. Future processing improvements have been identified in optimising the ore feed and processing flowsheet. The introduction of the autoclave has transformed the process flow form a traditional 'mill headgrade and tonnes milled' operation, to a 'sulphur/gold ratio and sulphur tonnes oxidised' operation.

The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.
