Dissatisfied with conventional wet processing methods for alluvial deposits, Resource Trend Pty Ltd of Cairns set out to develop a better process. After comprehensive investigation of existing dry techniques the principals have now developed a rotary dry concentrator that can handle the fine-grained fraction of alluvial deposits as well as the coarse. Four of these units have been mounted on an integrated towable treatment plant which has been in successful commercial operation for four years in northern Queensland. A second plant is now under construction for use in the United States. Grades of less than 0.2 g/lcm have been profitably mined at throughputs of about 80 cubic metres per hour and 85 per cent availability. The operation runs round the clock with an establishment of four. Major benefits, apart from lower capital and operating costs, are environmental. Ore is picked up, treated, and replaced in its original mixed condition within 25 m of its initial location. Rehabilitation is completed almost immediately behind the plant as it advances, leaving no slimes dams, coarse stockpiles, or haul roads. In 1993 the company won a Premier's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Queensland Mining Industry. The principal disadvantage is moisture, and the company is now actively seeking deposits in the deserts of the world. In Queensland mining is normally possible only for six months of the year.

In 1944 some ten or so pieces of legislation impacted on the mining industry. Today in excess of 80 in one way or another apply to the Northern Territory miner. This paper will look at the nature of the legislation that has been introduced and the reasons for its introduction. During the Second World War the mining of resources such as iron, tin etc for the war effort set the platform for the subsequent expansion of the industry in the post-war years. Thereafter, the change in attitudes over the years that have resulted from a more conscious public and more responsible governments and developers associated with the recognition of the legal rights of others and the threat of litigation, will be traced. With a major review of the Northern Territory Mining Act currently in progress, this paper will view ANZMEC's foreshadowed preference for a National Code and the NT's intent of drawing some commonalities with other states of Australia to achieve this aim. Finally, the questions of over-regulation and whether existing legislation is complete will be addressed. From this it is foreshadowed how legislation may develop during the lead into the 21st century.

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. This paper presents the numerical simulation of mine backfilling in underground stopes using three-dimensional discrete element modelling (DEM). The simulation predicts the forces exerted at the stope base and barricade with respect to time under free drained conditions. The results of the numerical simulation are validated using basic analytical solutions and advanced experimental tests involving a geotechnical centrifuge system. Overall, a good agreement between the present numerical simulations and the existing experimental and analytical results was found. The present model suggests that DEM is a promising computational tool to predict barricade pressure in underground mine stopes.CITATION:Hasan, A and Karrech, A, 2014. In the course of the development of the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in the 1980s an expression was introduced in the public discussion on environment and development that influenced the international and national policies of the last 20 years in all areas: sustainable development. The UN decided in 1992 to implement a program with the Agenda 21 which contains the demand for developing indicators for sustainable development. In this context an indicator is understood as a quantitative or qualitative measure that can be measured or described throughout time and which moreover is able to depict the current status and changes. In order to enable for a simple holistic assessment of sustainable development, highly aggregated indicators are required, which integrate the criteria identified as relevant within a framework to be defined. In the presented paper, sustainability indicators for the mining industry are developed that account for the allowances of the sustainable development concept and the Agenda 21. The indicators are quantifiable and traceable through time so that developments can be traced and assessed. Furthermore, the indicators account for the multidimensional aspect of sustainable development. They are designed to allow for the integration of several dimensions in one indicator. The premises that are underlying the development of the indicators are the minimisation of negative impacts on the environment and society while simultaneously considering the maximisation of social and economic factors. Moreover, the participative momentum that is part of the sustainability idea is safeguarded in explicitly integrating the social acceptance of certain measures into the assessment. The indicators presented are based on the logical combination of statements through the use of Boolean algebra. Starting with basic statements for which the logical value is oriented on the sustainability paradigm, complex multidimensional statements can be constructed and assessed.

Mining is an activity which has, in the past, been regarded as often leaving land in a condition unfit for further use. As the need for development that is both economic and ecologically sustainable has grown, so the issue of re-use of land after mining has become significant. During operation it is usual that mine environmental conditions which minimise unnecessary or avoidable environmental impact are agreed with the regulatory authorities . These conditions are usually set down in such a way that they can be interpreted reasonably well by both miners and regulators. However, the conditions to be met by a mining company before it can be absolved of responsibility of a site are often less clear. The close-out criteria by which the success of rehabilitation programs will be judged have received little attention in the past. These conditions are now growing in importance as the costs of rehabilitation of a mine site to an agreed post-mining land use assume greater significance in the economics of mining. This paper briefly describes the status of close-out criteria presently being applied across Australia. A comparison is made with similar guidelines from other countries.

Magnetic field studies provide remote sensing of magnetisation distributions and a means to investigate moderately- to strongly-magnetised ore deposits that may be partially or totally buried. However, above-surface magnetic field surveys have limited capability to resolve the detail of magnetisation distributions because of the large separation between the magnetisation and the magnetic sensor. While some of this detail is available from magnetic susceptibility logging within boreholes or from magnetisation studies on recovered core, these measurements are limited to the exact trace of the boreholes. The large disconnect between ground or aeromagnetic surveys and highly-localised borehole sampling can cause problems in developing robust source models from magnetic survey data. The measurement of magnetic field in boreholes has the capacity to at least partially bridge that gap by measuring the magnetic field due to magnetisations proximal to, but not intersected by, the boreholes.CSIRO has developed the world’s first downhole magnetic tensor gradiometer. This instrument measures magnetic field gradients in all directions within a borehole. A prototype instrument has been built and tested as part of phase 1 of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC). The prototype performed well with magnetic pyrrhotite at the DET CRC test site in the Adelaide Hills and at Carpentaria’s Hawsons magnetite deposit south of Broken Hill. Further work is required to reduce the diameter of the probe so that it can operate in NQ holes (it is currently limited to HQ or wider) and to transform it to a continuous logging tool. The borehole tensor gradiometer can be used to investigate the continuity of magnetisation over a distance of several metres to tens of metres away from a borehole intersection and the structural dip of the magnetic body. It can be used to either replace or augment downhole magnetic susceptibility logging. The Australian Research Council (ARC) has recently established an Industrial Transformation Research Hub in the area of iron ore, focused on iron ore characterisation, beneficiation, materials handling and end-use functionality. The research hubs are part of a new initiative aimed at building stronger relationships between industry and universities, while addressing issues of national significance. The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore will focus its attention on developing innovative approaches for creating enhanced value across the full value chain through the characterisation of different ore types, beneficiation and materials handling and transport. This hub brings together five industrial organisations and a research team formed from well-established research groups based at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources. These groups have a record of working closely with industry to create opportunities. Examples include new beneficiation technologies such as the Reflux Classifier for achieving gravity separation, the expertise of TUNRA Bulk Solids in materials handling and the Iron Making Centre at Newcastle, which is a capability maintained by BHP Billiton following the closure of its Technology Centre in 2009. The purpose of this paper is to provide an outline of the research hub and its objectives, some background on the research groups that now form the hub and an insight into the strategy adopted for developing and implementing new technologies. While the haematite concentrates produced in Eastern Canada and the magnetite concentrates that Australia will soon be producing are different feed materials, the pellets they produce have similar physical and metallurgical properties. This paper will examine the similarities and differences in the evolution of pellet microstructure for pellets produced from magnetite and haematite. The molten slag phase generated at high temperatures has a lower melting point when in contact with magnetite compared with haematite due to the higher divalent iron content. The presence of some slag is beneficial for bonding but too much can inhibit oxidation of magnetite, although slag generation at lower temperatures reduces energy usage. In pellets produced from haematite, magnetite is generated artificially from the combustion of the carbon particles added to the pellet feed as a source of energy. Maintaining the optimum production level and mineralogy of such æsecondaryÆ magnetite, allowing for its subsequent reoxidation, is important for the quality of haematite pellets. In both magnetite and haematite pellets, balancing the slag formation and oxidation (re-oxidation for haematite pellets) of the magnetite (secondary magnetite for haematite pellets) is necessary.

Relentless pressures are placed on mine operators to force them to become more productive and to make mines more competitive in modern economies. This has generated an intense drive to adopt technologies that rely on a greater degree of mechanisation, automation and computerisation. There is no turning back; high technology in mines is here to stay: computer controls and monitoring, computer aided mine design, information management systems, etc. During the past 20 years significant advances have been made in the areas of mine design, mine equipment and geomechanics. One could rhetorically ask if the advances in mine backfill technologies have kept pace with developments in other sectors of the mining industry. This paper will look at a few key mining technology sectors and will compare the relative progress of backfill technology to these sectors.

Recent events have raised the issue of whether, and if so when and how, an explorer may gather data from a mining tenement or permit which is held under the relevant mining Act by another party. Two situations arise: that of the small operator who wishes to prospect, and if successful mark off, ground held by others by virtue of the local form of exploration permit; and that of a regional explorer who may wish to enter on to some one else's existing mining tenement within the region of interest. The legal situation varies from state to state. At present the broad consensus seems to be that, provided consent is given, small-scale prospecting on another's exploration permit is at least tolerated if not actually provided for by the relevant Act. Entry onto a granted tenement to carry out any form of exploration is, however, prohibited in all jurisdictions unless consent is given. Furthermore it would appear that the proposal and conclusion of a joint venture agreement places certain obligations upon the party proposing to carry out exploration. These conclusions apply where ground surveys are proposed. Where data acquisition is by aerial survey the situation is much less clear, principally it would appear, because up to now little thought has been given to it. If trespass applies at ground level, at what height does it cease to apply? Can aerial magnetometry or photography be classified as prospecting? Is there an obligation upon public authorities who carry out remote sensing to make data available to the holders of mining tenements within the surveyed areas? Moves are now afoot to address these and other considerations, and it would be in the interests of everyone if a national approach to the problem could be adopted from the beginning. Certain suggestions in this respect are put forward.

Environmental legislation is changing rapidly throughout Australia at the present time, and with that change comes additional responsibilities for the mining and petroleum industries. Among the many changes that are being made are increased penalties for both criminal and accidental environmental impairment. The defences for criminal offences are limited and for other offences the laws may impose strict liability - in effect the offender is guilty until proven innocent. Mines may be included under contaminated land legislation, creating additional liabilities for clean-up, rehabilitation and long-term management. It is not unknown in Australia for the value of a mortgaged property to be less than the amount of the environmental liability acquired by a mortgagor in possession due to contamination of the site. An essential part of the management program for resource projects is now the regular conduct of an environmental audit, the results of which assist in the management of the legal and financial liabilities facing company directors and managers. The audit can also assist with negotiations with government agencies, staff, unions, insurers, Aboriginal and other community groups. An environmental audit may also help to ensure that companies are claiming the maximum allowable deductions for environmental works under the tax laws, and provide evidence in support of such claims. Environmental legislation affecting resource industries Environmental legislation in Australia is changing rapidly and can impose massive constraints, substantial administrative costs, and considerable liability on directors, managers and the corporation. Pollution control legislation Every State and Territory of Australia has a range of pollution control legislation contained in either individual acts relating to air, water, noise and land, or embodied in a single environment protection act. Pollution control legislation provides a critical management baseline for resource industries throughout Australia, often requiring the full-time attention of an environmental manager or an environmental department. In general, it is an offence to discharge effluents into water, or emit gases into the atmosphere above prescribed limits, cause noise above a regulated level, or contaminate land without a licence. A licence determines how much of a substance can be discharged, the location, the receiving environment, the quality, and the time at which discharges can be made or noise can be caused. Planning legislation Planning legislation controls where a project is located, how it will be constructed and operated, how large it is allowed to be, and what will happen once the project is completed. Development consents or approvals will generally contain a range of conditions controlling the preparation of the site, the construction of the facility and the way it is operated throughout its expected life time. Resource projects may be regarded under legislation as scheduled or designated developments requiring special treatment during the decision-making process. Under planning legislation, it is usual for resource projects to be subject to an environmental impact assessment process. Resource legislation Resource legislation specifically covering mining and petroleum in Australia, also contains requirements regarding protection of the environment during exploration for and extraction of minerals and oil. A mining or petroleum production lease usually contains numerous conditions regarding protection of the environment and rehabilitation of the site during and after the life of the extractive process.

This paper points to the timely importance of commencing a centrally recognised perpetual collection of mineral specimens in the Northern Territory which has as one of its objectives the collection and preservation of Northern Territory minerals of scientific, educational and heritage value. Currently in the Northern Territory there is no government department or institution that has a resourced coordinated state-wide objective to collect and document collectable mineral specimens. Specimens held in storage by the Department of Mines and Energy and the Museum and Art Galleries of the NT are not catalogued and owe their existence to fortuitous circumstances, not as a result of a planned systematic scientific approach to mineralogy. Northern Territory mineral species and unique specimens have and will continue to be driven to extinction while no central and active, recognised repository exists. This situation persists despite the fact mineral production is the Territory's largest income earner. The paper presents the arguments that hopefully will assist decision-makers to commence development of a state mineral collection lodged within an appropriate institution in the Northern Territory.

In order to assess whether polysaccharide depressants are strongly or weakly and reversibly bound to the surface of talc, a series of experiments was conducted on New York talc in which the floatability of the talc in a microflotation cell was determined. The talc was conditioned in solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or guar gum in 10-2 ionic strength Ca(NO3)2 or Mg(NO3)2. The talc was then washed with four successive aliquots of water, or cation solution, to try to remove the polymer and the flotation response of the talc was assessed. CMCs of different charge (DS) were used to assess the effect of charge on the strength of bonding. The results show that CMC and guar gum could be removed to a large extent from the talc surface by washing with water (the floatability was restored), however very little could be removed from the surface by washing with cation solution. The higher charge CMC was easier to remove from the talc planes in the absence of cations than the lower charge CMC. Thus CMC bonding to talc has been shown to be irreversible or very slowly reversible only if cations are present, implying that cations are necessary to keep the polymer bound to the surface of the planes to effect depression. The presence of ions in solution also had the effect of maintaining surface coverage of the talc by guar gum.
